From poor fitness and fielding to PCB chaos: Decoding Pakistan's dismal run in ODI World Cup

Nothing is clicking for Pakistan at the moment in the ODI World Cup in India. After starting the 2023 edition with two back-to-back wins, Babar Azam &amp; Co. have lost the plot and conceded four games in a row.&nbsp;Their last defeat came against South Africa in Chennai on Friday (Oct 27). Amid their campaign falling apart, a lot has been said and written about the players. Questions are being raised left, right and centre on the players, team management and the selection committee.

Amidst this chaos, former fast bowler Waqar Younis has extended his support to 'Pakistan's asset' Babar after an alleged WhatsApp chat involving him&nbsp;surfaced.&nbsp;It is to be noted that the&nbsp;sender --&nbsp;Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) COO Salman Naseer --&nbsp;asked&nbsp;Babar if he tried to get in touch with the board chairman&nbsp;Zaka Ashraf. However, it was met with a negative response.&nbsp;

“Babar, there’s also been this news circulating on TV and social media that you have been calling Chairman and he’s not answering. Have you called him recently?"&nbsp;the text read from Salman.&nbsp;

Babar -- whose&nbsp;number was saved as ‘Babar Azam New’ -- responded by saying,&nbsp;“Salam Salman bhai, ma ny to sir ko koi call nai ke (Hello brother, I did not call sir)."

'Please leave Babar Azam alone, he's...': Waqar REACTS after alleged leaked chats of Pak captain surface

Pakistan coach Grant Badburn stopped short of calling themselves an 'isolated team' but conceded that lack of games against top teams has contributed to their dismal performance in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. Pakistan, after winning their first matches, have lost four in a row and now stand on the brink of elimination. Out of four losses, one came against Afghanistan - their first in ODIs.

Ahead of the commencement of the tournament, Pakistan, being number one in the ICC ODI rankings, were one of the favourites to win the trophy. Their lacklustre performance, however, has got them to the place where not only do they need to win the remaining games but pray for current top-four teams to slip as well.

Talking about what went wrong with Pakistan despite being the favourites, Bradburn said, "Look I'm not sure where you get favourites from because there are 10 teams in this tournament, there's 150 cricketers who are the best on the planet.&nbsp;

"In terms of the ICC rankings, we know they are skewed because we don't get to play India, we don't get to play a lot of the top nations who haven't been to Pakistan of late," he added.

Bradburn, talking on the eve of a crucial game against Bangladesh, further said: "We were No. 5 in April, we became No. 1 recently before the tournament, and that might be where you term the phrase favourites. But we're realistic. We have not been the best in the world as yet, which highlights where we are in this tournament right now. We have no divine right to beat anyone in this tournament. We have to play quality cricket, and we have to put all three departments of our game together."

After Bangladesh, Pakistan's next two games are against New Zealand and England on November 4 and 11, respectively.

ODI World Cup 2023: 'Don't get to...,' Pak coach stops short of calling team 'isolated' after horror campaign

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for demoralising the national side during the ongoing ODI World Cup in India, where Babar Azam &amp; Co. are struggling at the moment. Kaneria wrote a lengthy post on X, formerly Twitter, where he slammed the board after Babar's alleged&nbsp;WhatsApp chats surfaced and Inzamam-ul-Haq resigned as the chief selector after conflict of interest allegations.

Kaneria wrote on X, "While Team Afghanistan is focusing more on cricket and less on politics, Team Pakistan is focused less on cricket and more on geopolitics. @TheRealPCB is downgrading the morale of its cricketers by constantly issuing removal warnings to the captain in case of poor performance. This is happening when team selection is already in question."

CWC 2023: 'PCB is downgrading the morale of Pakistan cricketers by constantly...' - Danish Kaneria

On Monday (Oct 30), a big development came from Pakistan cricket as Inzamam-ul-Haq, former Pakistan captain and 1992 ODI World Cup winner, stepped down as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief selector. This comes amid Babar Azam-led Pakistan's ODI World Cup struggles, where they have lost four games on the trot and are on the verge of an early exit. A lot of fingers were pointed at chief selector Inzamam post the national side's struggles. However, not many expected him to resign in the middle of the mega event in India.&nbsp;

Inzamam resigned&nbsp;after media reports claimed the former cricketer had a stake in a player’s management company registered with the PCB. The reports further claimed that&nbsp;several top players including Babar and Mohammad Rizwan were associated with the company. The veteran also reacted to his resignation. On Monday evening, he said in an interview, on&nbsp;SAMAA TV&nbsp;programme ‘Zor Ka Jor’ that he went to the board after the allegations and asked them to hold an inquiry. Following this, he decided to step down. He, however, claimed that he is willing to sit with the board after the completion of the probe.&nbsp;

<h2>'I am a human and it hurts. I have a 20-year cricket career....'</h2>

During the interaction, he said, "We are cricketers and we are available all the time to serve the country. Since I am facing an inquiry, and as the nature of my job is, I should step down and let them conduct the probe." He further pointed out, "I am a human and it hurts. I have a 20-year cricket career during which I represented Pakistan. I am not someone who people don’t know. When such allegations are levelled, it hurts.”

Inzamam denied having any link with the&nbsp;management company for players, namely Saya Corporation. In this regard, he added, "I must tell you very clearly that such companies are recommended by the ICC and PCB has all their data."

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), said, "The committee will submit its report and any recommendations to the PCB management in an expeditious manner."

'When such allegations are levelled...': Inzamam on his resignation as PCB chief selector amid WC struggles

Pakistan cricket team's woes continue to accumulate in ODI World Cup 2023 as it now has been penalised for slow over-rate against South Africa against whom they lost a thriller by one wicket. The Men in Green have been fined 20 per cent of their match fees after being found four-over short in the stipulated time to complete the overs.

As per the ICC Code of Conduct, the players are liable for five per cent cut of their match fee for every over short and hence the 20 per cent fine for the Pakistan team. The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire Richard Kettleborough and Pakistan skipper Babar Azam accepted.

With four consecutive losses in six games, Pakistan are now at the brink of exit from the ODI World Cup 2023. The 1992 World Cup winner had started their campaign with two wins in a row but then ran into India for their first loss of the tournament and never really recovered from there.&nbsp;

After loss against India, Pakistan also lost against Australia and Afghanistan before the one wicket loss against South Africa. The game against Proteas was something that will sting them for a long time as the bowlers had brought them back from nowhere to almost win the game.

Chasing 271, South Africa were 235/5 in 37th over before Pak bowlers displayed precision and skill to get four wickets and leave South Africa 11 runs short of the target with last pair on the crease. Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi, however, held their nerve and guided South Africa home for their fifth win of the tournament.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was visibly distraught after the game and agreed that they have missed the chance to stay in the tournament.

With four points after two wins and four losses, Pakistan are now at the sixth place on the points table. Their next three ODI World Cup games are against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and England.

ODI World Cup 2023: Pakistan fined for THIS reason after one-wicket loss against South Africa

Pakistan lost arguably the most thrilling match of the ODI World Cup 2023 as they allowed South Africa to win by one wicket on October 27 in Chennai. Chasing 271, South Africa were cruising along at 235/5 in 37th over before Pak bowlers hit back to bring them down to 260/9 at 45.3 over mark. Keshav Maharaj, however, held his nerve along with Tabraiz Shamsi and hit Mohammad Nawaz for a four to guide Proteas home in their first chase of the tournament.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was very disappointed with the loss and rightfully so as the Men in Green now only are mathematically in the race of semifinals. It was Pakistan's batting which faltered once again and Babar agreed that they were a few runs short.

"Very disappointing, we fought back well but we were 10-15 runs short. I think the way fast bowlers bowled, they did well but unfortunately the result was not on our side," said Babar after that match.

There was a moment in the game when Haris Rauf almost trapped Shamsi LBW for the last wicket but only for DRS to rule not out on umpire's call. Babar, however, said: "It's part of the game, this is umpire's call so I think it's just part of the game."&nbsp;

With Pakistan's hopes all but over after losing four consecutive games - for the first time in ODI World Cup history for them, Babar conceded that they missed the chance to stay in the tournament.&nbsp;

"It's disappointing everyone, we had the opportunity to win this match and stay in the tournament but we missed it. We will try our best in our next three matches and put our effort so let's see where we stand after the three matches," said the dejected Pak skipper.

With four points after two wins and four losses, Pakistan are now at the sixth place on the points table. Their next three ODI World Cup games are against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and England.

ODI World Cup 2023: 'We missed it,' says Pakistan skipper Babar Azam on their semis chances after loss vs SA

Pakistan are having a nightmare of the ODI World Cup 2023 after three consecutive losses including against Afghanistan on October 23. The losses have left Pakistan's campaign in the lurch. Another loss in next four league games can rule them out of the tournament.

Pakistan Director of Men's Cricket Mickey Arthur, however, is confident that the Men in Green can still win the ODI World Cup.

“We said in the change room the other night that we have got six matches to win the World Cup,” Arthur told PCB Digital.

“We have to get on a streak and win six in a row. We know that as a unit, we know that as a team, we have to make sure we get our strategy 100%. We have to make sure that we get our execution 100% and if we do that, there is no reason why we cannot [win the World Cup].”

“They are a very good cricket team and they're full of confidence because they have played well. I know though that if we do our basics and disciplines right, our skills will come out and we can beat anybody,” Arthur added.

The 1992 World Cup winners are going through a tough phase after starting their campaign with the wins against Netherlands and Sri Lanka. The Babar Azam-led team then lost to India by seven wickets in the third game, by 62 runs against Australia in the fourth game and by eight wickets against Afghanistan in their last game.

The loss against Afghanistan has turned the faces of former Pakistan cricketers red as they questioned the current team's mentality, fitness and Babar's captaincy as well.

Amid the criticism, the Pakistan Cricket Board, issued a media release which said: "The national team still has four crucial matches remaining in the round-robin stage, and the PCB is optimistic that the team will regroup, overcome the setbacks and perform positively and effectively in the upcoming fixtures."

Pakistan next play South Africa on October 27 in Chennai.

ODI World Cup 2023: 'No reason we...,' Pakistan team director Mickey Arthur's BOLD claim despite three losses

Shaheen Afridi, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Mohammed Rizwan are being discussed as potential candidates to replace Babar Azam as Pakistan captain after the national side returns home post the ODI World Cup. There have been a lot of questions on Babar's leadership in the ongoing ten-team tournament with three successive defeats, with the latest coming against Afghanistan in Chennai on Monday (Oct 23).&nbsp;

It is being said that the change in leadership role could take place soon as Pakistan's chances of making it to the semi-finals of the ongoing ODI World Cup look bleak at the moment. The Men in Green are scheduled to tour Australia soon after the World Cup and plans for the 2024 T20 World Cup will be in full swing post the mega event in India. Thus, a new captain can be appointed sooner than later.

<h2>What are Babar's chances of staying captain?</h2>

"Only if Pakistan can stage a miracle and win all their remaining matches to qualify for the semi-finals of this World Cup does Babar stand any chance of surviving as captain and even then he might be relegated to skipper in just the red ball format," one reliable source close to the developments said, as per PTI.

"It is over for Babar because he has been given unbridled power and authority as captain and more importantly he has always had players of his choice in the team. There has never been any attempt to reduce his authority and so he is now being held solely responsible for the Asia Cup and World Cup defeats," the source mentioned.

The source further revealed that despite advice from former captains such as Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammed Hafeez to make some changes to the final World Cup squad, Babar got all the 18 players he wanted and was backed by PCB chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq.&nbsp;

"The PCB Chairman, Zaka Ashraf ignored the advice of Misbah and Hafeez and some other former players whom he consulted as Babar was adamant he didn't want changes in the team for the World Cup," the source said.

Misbah, former captain and coach, also confirmed on a television channel that he had asked Babar to include mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed in the World Cup squad. However, the current skipper only added him as a travelling reserve.

It is to be noted that lobbies for the possible candidates, including Sarfaraz, Shaheen, Rizwan and Shan Masood have already started their work to get their candidate selected. In a likely scenario, the PCB is contemplating different captains for the red and white-ball formats.

"Sarfaraz might win the nod to captain the Test and ODI sides again while Shaheen may get a chance to be the T20 captain," the source added. Sarfaraz is not part of the Babar-led ODI World Cup squad.

Babar was appointed T20I captain in late 2019 but became the all-format skipper by 2021.

Shaheen, Rizwan, Sarfaraz in line to replace Babar Azam as Pakistan captain post ODI WC: Report

Rohit Sharma-led Team India have been in top form in the home ODI World Cup. After three games, India have equal number of wins and will lock horns with Bangladesh on Thursday (Oct 19) in Pune. On Saturday (Oct 14), India met Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad and demolished their arch-rivals by seven wickets, and 117 balls to spare.

With this win, India are atop in the points table and marching ahead with high chances of entering the semi-finals in the top-two. Rashid Latif, former Pakistan captain, lauded India's ace spinner Kuldeep Yadav after the Men in Blue's easy win over his national side and predicted the 29-year-old Kuldeep to end as the highest wicket-taker of the ongoing edition.

Latif feels Babar Azam-led Pakistani batters weren't aggressive against Kuldeep and only tried to play out his overs in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;Writing in his column for The Indian Express, he said, "Against Kuldeep, we looked timid, we were trying to just play out his ten overs. Not a single Pakistan batsman was able to pick Kuldeep (Yadav), and I think if he is not rested in a few matches, Kuldeep will end up being the leading wicket-taker of the tournament."

At the moment, Kuldeep has five wickets (third-most by an Indian) and occupies the sixth spot in the leading wicket-taker list. Jasprit Bumrah leads the overall chart with eight wickets, who was also the Player-of-the-Match versus Pakistan for his 2 for 19, whereas Ravindra Jadeja also features in the top five (fifth) with equal number of scalps as Kuldeep.

Latif, however, feels India should play R Ashwin in every game. Ashwin, who was selected in the World Cup squad at the last minute after Axar Patel's injury, played versus Australia but has warmed the bench in the next two games. "I was surprised that India didn’t pick Ashwin. I feel he should play all the matches for India. If Ashwin had played I don’t think we could have even got 190 on the board,” Latif added.

India will look to maintain their winning run when they lock horns with the Bangla Tigers on Thursday.&nbsp;

World Cup Cricket: Pakistani presenter Zainab Abbas deported after anti-India posts surface: Reports

The ODI World Cup 2023 edition kicked off on Thursday (October 5) with the defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad. On Friday (October 6), Babar Azam-led Pakistan will face the Netherlands at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Ahead of the clash, Dav Whatmore -- Sri Lanka's ODI World Cup-winning coach and former Australian cricketer -- pointed out that the Men in Green need to improve in the fielding department in order to progress ahead in the marquee competition in India.&nbsp;

Speaking to Wion, Whatmore opined on how Pakistan is shaping up for the 50-over showpiece event. Pakistan enter the CWC '23 edition on the back of a disastrous run in the Asia Cup and two back-to-back defeats in the warm-up games. However, the No. 2 ranked ODI side is backed as one of the strongest contenders due to the subcontinental conditions and a well-oiled side.

Whatmore reflected on their warm-up losses and stated, "Look, they should have won that game (versus New Zealand in the warm-ups). But it is at the same ground where they open up their campaign versus the Netherlands (in Hyderabad). Anybody would argue the fact that they will win. They should win comfortably tomorrow. I think they lost a bit of confidence versus New Zealand. Against Australia in their second warm-up match, they whacked them over the park. Australia allowed them to come close with their bowling effort (Pakistan managed 337 in pursuit of 352). Hence, confidence would have been jolted a bit. But, they should do well tomorrow which will lift their confidence."

Whatmore further stated on Pakistan's unpredictable tag and said, "They have been inconsistent. They have been guilty in that regard. But in this tournament, where the focus will be on them from the whole world, they will be as consistent as they possibly can."

The former SL coach mentioned the area of concern for Babar &amp; Co. In this regard, he asserted, "Their fielding historically has never been up to the mark. They have been guilty of some bad pictures of fielding. That department of the game can improve surely. On the batting, they have done well. They have got over 300 in both practice games. They fell short versus the Kiwis and had some easy bowling to hit versus the Aussies but their batting is not too good. They know their roles and if they get good starts, they have a good platform to really launch in the last ten overs -- like every other team."

Pakistan were extremely poor in the field versus the Aussies in their last warm-up encounter in Hyderabad. They will like to start afresh in their tournament-opener versus the Dutch on Friday.&nbsp;

The ODI World Cup 2023 edition kicked off on Thursday (October 5) with the defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad. On Friday (October 6), Babar Azam-led Pakistan will face the Netherlands at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Ahead of the clash, Dav Whatmore -- Sri Lanka's ODI World Cup-winning coach and former Australian cricketer -- pointed out that the Men in Green need to improve in the fielding department in order to progress ahead in the marquee competition in India. But, they should do well tomorrow which will lift their confidence." Also read: World Cup 2023: Fans slam BCCI as stadium wears deserted look in England vs New Zealand opener Whatmore further stated on Pakistan's unpredictable tag and said, "They have been inconsistent. They have been guilty in that regard. But in this tournament, where the focus will be on them from the whole world, they will be as consistent as they possibly can." The former SL coach mentioned the area of concern for Babar & Co. They know their roles and if they get good starts, they have a good platform to really launch in the last ten overs -- like every other team." Pakistan were extremely poor in the field versus the Aussies in their last warm-up encounter in Hyderabad. They will like to start afresh in their tournament-opener versus the Dutch on Friday. 'Pakistan's fielding has...': Dav Whatmore on Babar Azam-led Men in Green ahead of their CWC '23 opener

The recently concluded Asia Cup tournament saw India and Pakistan face off each other twice. While the group-stage match couldn't be completed due to rain, India came out triumphant in the Super Four stage. The players from both teams showed a lot of 'respect and camaraderie' to each other during the games both on and off the field. Some former cricketers, however, called out the 'lack of aggression' between the two teams as compared to older India and Pakistan teams.

Reacting to the same question, Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf snapped at a journalist before his team's departure to India for the ODI World Cup which starts on October 5. India and Pakistan are set to face off each other on October 14 in Ahmedabad during the quadrennial tournament.

“Why should I go and fight with Indians? It is cricket and not war," Rauf said in response to the question on aggression.

Notably, Rauf was one of the two Pak pacers who got injured during the Super Four game loss against India and didn't come out to bat. The other pacer, Naseem Shah, has been ruled out of the World Cup completely.

“Playing in any tournament for your country is a big deal. My fitness is better than before. We have confidence in ourselves as a team. The team management will decide whether to give me the new ball or the old ball,” Rauf said about his fitness

“I have no specific goal set for the World Cup. More emphasis is on team performance than individual performance,” he further added.

Pakistan team's departure to India also got delayed after some issues in receiving an India visa. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had written to the International Cricket Council (ICC) about the issue on Monday, September 24 and hours after that they got the visas.

Pakistan are scheduled to play two warm-up games&nbsp;against New Zealand and Australia&nbsp;on September 29 and October 3, respectively, before starting their campaign on October 6 against the Netherlands.

A Dutch court on Monday sentenced former Pakistan international cricketer Khalid Latif to 12 years in prison for urging the murder of anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders.

Latif, 37, had offered 21,000 euros ($22,500) for the head of Wilders in an online video after the firebrand lawmaker sought to arrange a competition for cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

"It was not a stretch to think that somebody around the world would have taken heed of the call to kill Mr Wilders," presiding judge G. Verbeek told the court.

"The accused knew this and his call fuelled the fire to have Wilders killed."

It is extremely unlikely that Latif, who was convicted in absentia, will serve his sentence. Dutch authorities have sought in vain to question Latif over the case and requested legal assistance from Pakistan, also to no avail.&nbsp;

"It's a good sentence, but it's a pity that the accused is not here in court," Wilders told reporters outside, sporting his trademark peroxide hairdo.

"It is no longer acceptable that the Pakistani authorities refuse to cooperate. I am going to ask the prime minister to ensure that Khalid Latif is arrested in Pakistan and extradited to the Netherlands," he added.

Wilders cancelled the cartoon contest after protests broke out in Pakistan and he was inundated with death threats. He has been under 24-hour state protection since 2004.

In the Netherlands, the plan to stage the contest was criticised widely with politicians, local media and ordinary citizens slamming the idea as needlessly antagonising Muslims.

But the call to kill Wilders appeared to resonate in the real world, with a Pakistani man sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2019 for plotting his assassination in the wake of the cancelled contest.

Judge Verbeek said Latif's video was not just an attack on Wilders personally, but also on the concept of free speech in the Netherlands.

Latif played five one-day internationals and 13 T20 internationals for Pakistan but was banned from cricket for five years in 2017 for spot-fixing in a Pakistan Super League match in Dubai.

His last Pakistan appearance was against the West Indies in Abu Dhabi in September 2016.

However, Verbeek said that Latif had benefitted from his fame as an international cricketer to "add oil to the fire" at a time when the Netherlands was already the target of several threats.&nbsp;

Ex-Pakistan cricketer Khalid Latif gets 12 years for inciting murder of Dutch MP

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam leads one of the most fearsome pace attacks in the world cricket and he isn't shy to accept that. While the Asian giant's&nbsp;batting, especially the top three, have played significant part in making them number one, it is the bowlers who have always been there to support the batting.&nbsp;

The same was visible during the group stage clash in Asia Cup when Pakistan pace trio of Nassem Shah, Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf rocked India's top order and Babar exuded confidence in his pace attack on the eve of Super Four stage clash.

"I feel very proud of the fast bowlers I have. They're among the best, and help us dominate," he said. "Tournaments and matches are won by fast bowlers, and I fully believe in them. There's no secret; they just believe in themselves and cover for each other."

Pakistan have announced their playing XI for the game, which is scheduled&nbsp;in Colombo, and has made one change in it from the side which faced India in group stage.

The Men In Green have included Faheem Ashraf in place of spinner Mohammad Nawaz for the match against India. Ashraf had also played Pakistan's first Super Four stage match against Bangladesh and had taken one wicket for 27 runs in seven overs. As for spinning options, Iftikhar Ahmed and Agha Salman are the two part-time options apart from specialist Shadab Khan.

"We're testing out different combinations to see what works for us," Babar said about the combination. "We haven't quite worked out exactly how to best approach the middle overs, but we're finishing and starting very well thanks to our fast bowlers. It's a team effort. As a team, we try and get the best out of our players."

The group stage match, however, couldn't get completed because of the rain and that's why a reserve day has been added to the Super Four stage match.

Asia Cup: Pakistan skipper Babar Azam 'proud' of pace attack ahead of Super Four stage clash vs India

The Asia Cup 2023 edition is underway. The multi-nation competition&nbsp;finally started on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan with Babar Azam-led Men in Green thrashing Nepal by 238 runs. In the second game, in Sri Lanka, the home side beat Bangladesh by five wickets on Thursday (August 31). In the two games, as well as during India's team photo shoot, many observed that Pakistan's name was missing&nbsp;from the team jerseys.

It is to be noted that&nbsp;Pakistan remain the original hosts despite nine out of 13 games being held in Sri Lanka. The 2023 edition is being held in a hybrid model -- for the first time in Asia Cup's history -- after India made it clear that they won't travel to Pakistan due to strained relations. Last year's edition was held in the UAE but Sri Lanka remained the original hosts and their name was mentioned in team jerseys (below the Asia Cup's logo). However, eyebrows have been raised with the same trend not being followed this year.

<h2>Former Pak cricketers slam ACC, PCB</h2>

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif said, as quoted by Hindustan Times, "This is unacceptable and it is the Asian Cricket Council which must explain this oversight since the Asia Cup is their property."

On the other hand, PCB tried to play down the situation by explaining that the Jay Shah-led ACC&nbsp;decided after the 2022 edition&nbsp;to strike off the host country's name from below&nbsp;the Asia Cup logo&nbsp;in future events. However, not many have accepted their statement.&nbsp;

Moreover, Mohsin Khan -- Pakistan's former batter -- also slammed ACC and stated, "Makes no sense at all. Then why has the ACC given the host country’s name on the logos for their Asian Emerging Nations Cup or their Asian under-16 event held in July in Malaysia."

The third game of the Asia Cup will take place on Saturday (September 02) in Kandy with India facing arch-rivals Pakistan. Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. will open their campaign and hope for a win over the No. 1 ranked ODI side.

Asia Cup: ACC, PCB blasted by ex-cricketers and fans after Pakistan's name goes missing from team jerseys

Pakistan started their Asia Cup 2023 campaign on Wednesday, August 30, against Nepal and their skipper Babar Azam led from the front. After losing two early wickets, Babar held the innings together first with Mohammed Rizwan and then with Iftikhar Ahmed as Pakistan went on top in their innings.

Babar scored a magnificent 151 as the hosts posted a mammoth total of 342/6 runs in 50 overs. Babar, in the process of hitting his ton, broke an ODI record as well. This was Babar's 19th ton overall in one-day games and he took just 102 innings to get there. He now tops the list of batsmen who are fastest to reach 19 ODI tons, leaving past the likes of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla.

Before Babar, South African Amla was the fastest to reach 19 ODI centuries in 104 innings. Former India skipper Kohli, with whom Babar is often compared to, had reached the milestone in 124 innings. Completing the top five of the list are Australia David Warner in 139 innings and de Villiers in 171 innings.

As for the match, Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first in Multan. Nepal, playing first time in the regional tournament, did well to scalp two quick wickets of openers Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq. Babar then added 86 runs for the third wicket with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/asia-cup-wait-what-md-rizwans-brainfade-moment-makes-heads-turn-during-pakistan-nepal-opener-630606">Rizwan (44) who got out rather funnily</a>.

Nepal created an opening in 28th over of the innings by taking Agha Salman (5) out shortly after Rizwan's wicket but that was the last they celebrated. Ahmed (109 not out) joined his captain on the crease and the duo added 214 runs for the fifth wicket before Pak lost two wickets in last over while trying to accelerate.

For Nepal, Sompal Kami took wickets while Karan KC and Sandeep Lamichhane took one each.

Asia Cup: Pak skipper Babar Azam goes past Virat Kohli, Hashim Amla to achieve THIS feat with ton vs Nepal

After a lot of wait, the Asia Cup 2023 edition is now underway. Babar Azam-led Pakistan have locked horns with Nepal in the opening game in Multan, Pakistan on Wednesday (August 30). The current edition is being held in the 50-over format for the ODI World Cup and is also taking place in two countries, for the first time ever, including Sri Lanka. The Islanders came into the picture after India's reluctance to travel to Pakistan, the original hosts, due to their strained political relations. On Tuesday (August 29), ahead of the Pakistan-Nepal clash, Men in Green captain Babar spoke about the hectic scheduling as all teams, barring India, are set to travel regularly within a short span of time.

<h2>'Unfortunately, nothing can be done about it'</h2>

Talking to the reporters before the match, Babar said, "If you ask me, it would have been good if the whole tournament would have been held in Pakistan, but unfortunately, nothing can be done about it," Babar said at the pre-tournament media conference. "As professionals, we are ready for any schedule that is given to us. There would be travelling as well as back-to-back games and we are ready for that."

It is to be noted that Pakistan kick&nbsp;off their campaign on Wednesday against Nepal in Multan and then will soon leave for&nbsp;Sri Lanka the very next day as they face off with arch-rivals India on September 02 in Kandy. Within a day, they will be back in Lahore for their Super Four game (as qualification for the next stage very likely) on September 6 and will again land in the Island nation for their following game&nbsp;on September 9.

Babar explained how Pakistan will deal with the hectic schedule amid regular travelling. In this regard, the 28-year-old said, "Our coaches and support staff have chalked out plans about how much we would utilise each player and also we have booked our flights in such a manner, that our travelling schedule gives enough time to rest.

At present, Pakistan will look for a big win over Nepal to kick off their Asia Cup campaign in style with their next outing versus Team India. Here's the No. 1 ranked ODI side's playing XI for the Nepal tie.

Would've been good if Asia Cup 2023 was held entirely in Pakistan, says Babar Azam ahead of Nepal tie

A former Pakistani international cricketer went on trial Tuesday in the Netherlands for allegedly attempting to incite the murder of anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders, with prosecutors demanding a 12-year sentence if convicted.

Dutch public prosecutors said Khalid Latif, 37, who remains in Pakistan, had offered 21,000 euros ($23,000) in an online video 2018 in which he called for Wilders' killing.

The outspoken MP at the time cancelled a competition for cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed after angry demonstrations broke out, particularly in Pakistan, and the far-right politician was inundated with death threats.

Khalid "Latif tried to move others to murder Mr Wilders and to avenge the cartoon contest," prosecutor F. A. Kuipers told the judges.

"Not only was his goal to end a human life with violence, but with his appeal he tried to silence a Dutch representative," she said at a court hearing, held at a high security courthouse near Schiphol airport.

"Calling for a murder to prevent the cartoon competition and offering a sum of money to kill the organiser of that competition should be very severely punished as far as the Public Prosecution is concerned," Kuipers added, before asking for a 12-year sentence.

Neither Latif, nor any lawyer were present in the courtroom.

The Pakistani embassy in The Hague had no comment directly after the hearing and Latif could not be immediately reached for comment.&nbsp;

Kuipers said prosecutors have tried since 2018 to speak to the cricketer and handed over a request to Islamabad for legal assistance, to no avail.

The Netherlands does not have a treaty regarding legal assistance with Pakistan, she said.

"The questions we have for Latif remain unanswered," Kuipers said.

Wilders, who was in court during the hearing, told the judges death threats on his life increased after his plans to stage the controversial cartoon competition.

Known for his firebrand comments about Islam, Wilders has been under 24-hour state protection since 2004.&nbsp;

But "whatever you find of the cartoon competition, there is no reason to put a price of death on somebody's head for it," Wilders said.

Addressing Latif personally, Wilders said "your call to have me murdered will never silence me."

The verdict is due to be handed down on September 11.

Latif 37, who played five one-day internations and 13 T20Is for Pakistan, was banned from cricket for five years in 2017 for spot-fixing in a Pakistan Super League match in Dubai.

He completed his ban last year and has since been living a low-profile life in Karachi, coaching at club level.&nbsp;

Pakistan ex-cricketer Khalid Latif on trial in Dutch MP threat case

Former Pakistan skipper Rashid Latif feels Team India would have been 100 per cent prepared for the 2023 ODI World Cup, to be held in India in October-November, had Virat Kohli remained the captain. Kohli was sacked as the ODI captain in late 2021, just a few months after he stepped down as the T20I skipper ahead of the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE.

At that time, the BCCI made it clear that it does not want two captains in&nbsp;different white-ball formats. Hence, Rohit took over as the white-ball skipper and soon became the full-time captain in early 2022, post Kohli's resignation as the Test skipper.

Since then, India have not had great success across formats. They fell flat in the Asia Cup, held in the T20I format, in 2022 and also bowed out of the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup last year, held in Australia.

Towards the end of the year, India lost the ODIs to hosts Bangladesh, conceded a home 50-over series to Australia early this year, came second in the WTC final and also lost the five T20I series to West Indies, held in West Indies and USA.

Injuries have plagued India's run as they still await the fitness reports of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer ahead of the Asia Cup, which kicks off later this month.

Thus, the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led Indian team had lots on their plate ahead of the ODI World Cup at home, in October-November.

In this regard, Latif spoke at length about India's current struggles and believes things would have been different, had Kohli remained the captain.&nbsp;

<h2>'India would have been 100% prepared for CWC '23 had Kohli remained captain'</h2>

“If they had allowed Virat Kohli to continue as captain, India would have been 100 per cent prepared for the World Cup by this time,” Latif said on his official YouTube channel.

"Indian team management has experimented with several players and if I talk about their batting, the middle and lower order — from numbers 4 to 7 — they just have not allowed any new player to settle down. There have been too many changes," he further asserted.

The former Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter added that dependence on injured seniors such as Rahul and Iyer might be risky for Team India, heading into the Asia Cup and CWC '23. Latif added, "I would say it is risky because KL and Iyer are returning from injuries."&nbsp;

At present, Jasprit Bumrah is leading a second-stringed Indian team in Ireland for three T20Is in Dublin, starting on Friday (August 18). However, the main focus is already on the Asia Cup, which commences on August 30. Soon after the continental tournament, the ODI World Cup will kick off in India&nbsp;on October 05.&nbsp;

Pakistan left-arm pacer Wahab Riaz announces international retirement before Asia Cup

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) shared a video on Pakistan cricket on the country's 76th Independence Day on Monday (August 14).&nbsp;The two-minute 21-second clip traced back to Pakistan's international cricket debut in 1952 and captured some of their biggest moments, such as the&nbsp;historic ODI World Cup triumph in 1992 till the 2022 T20 World Cup where Babar Azam-led Men in Green reached the final.

However, the video has not been well-received by the Pakistan cricket fans. The short clip is facing a severe backlash as it did not involve Imran Khan, the national captain and former prime minister who led Pakistan to their first-ever mega title during the 1992 ODI World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The caption of the video reads, "Making history isn't just about one day; it's about the legends we create and the tales we script. Pakistan Cricket Team – a legacy that echoes through time."

The viral clip comprised some big names from Pakistan cricket such as Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Waqar Younis, Shahid Afridi, and Babar.

It displayed some of their glorious moments in 1992 win, the 2009 T20 World Cup victory and&nbsp;2017 Champions Trophy win, where they trounced India in the summit clash. However, Imran -- a veteran of 88 Tests and 175 ODIs -- was nowhere to be found.&nbsp;

Imran has been a huge name in Pakistan cricket. He remains one of the finest cricketers of all time. He ended with&nbsp;3,807 and&nbsp;3,709 Test and ODI runs, respectively, along with claiming a total of 544 international wickets (362 of them came in the purest format) during his sparkling international career (spanning from 1971-1994). 'Disgusting': Fans react after Imran Khan ousted from PCB's video on Pakistan cricket legends

India beat West Indies, 2-1, in the recently-held three-match ODI series in the Caribbean island. While Rohit Sharma-led visitors won the series opener by five wickets, they lost the second and penultimate tie -- by six wickets -- before winning the decider by 200 runs. What made heads turn during the three ODIs was India's team combination as the Rahul Dravid-led team management rested Rohit and Kohli for the final two matches whereas the fringed players' usage was also questioned.

From the second ODI, Ishan Kishan opened the innings along with Shubman Gill. While Ishan ended the series with scores of 52, 55 and 77, it is to be noted that he played as an opener. Given Rohit and Gill are certain at the top, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer will take the middle-order slots once deemed fit before the ODI World Cup. Thus, if Ishan makes the cut for the 50-over showpiece event, to be held in India later this year, he will most likely be slotted at the lower-order. Hence, many raised eyebrows as India used him as an opener throughout the WI ODIs.

The former cricketers and experts were baffled with how India utilised the likes of Axar Patel, Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson in the series whereas many slammed them for overlooking Yuzvendra Chahal. Now, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has lashed out at Team India for the way they have used some players in the recent ODIs.

<h2>'One guy being dropped after scoring 200... what's the point?'</h2>

Butt said on his official YouTube channel, "I absolutely agree (that India's experiment with Ishan was confusing). One guy being dropped after scoring 200... what's the point? Either they accept the fact that he is second option, even if he scores 1000 runs in a single innings. That never gives you the feeling of being the best, that never gives you the feeling that you will be rewarded for your performances. Currently, the feeling is no matter what you do, you will be the second option."

He further added, “He is not a bench strength level anymore. He's more than that. Secondly, I accept that Rohit is a big player, but some players are there who have been around for a long time but when pressure gets to them, they can't deliver. Especially at the knock-out stages, this is something that has to be worked on."

At present, India is involved in the five T20Is versus West Indies in the Caribbean island. Their main focus is now on the forthcoming Asia Cup, which commences late in August, before the ODI World Cup 2023 in India in October-November.

'Even if he scores 1,000 runs in an inning, he is...': Ex-Pak captain slams India for experiments in WI ODIs

After the end of Pakistan's tour of Sri Lanka, Mohammed Hafeez -- former Men in Green skipper and 2017 Champions Trophy winner -- is expected to take over as the national team's chief selector. Hafeez, who&nbsp;represented Pakistan in 55 Tests, 218 ODIs and 119 T20Is, has been a huge contributor to&nbsp;Pakistan cricket and is expected to take over a&nbsp;post&nbsp;that is lying vacant after Pakistan Cricket Board's Cricket Management Committee (CMC) got dissolved in June.

As per sources, Hafeez is being favoured by the newly-appointed PCB chief Zaka Ashraf.&nbsp;"Zaka met with former captains&nbsp;Rashid Latif and Hafeez and spoke to them about becoming chief selector. Rashid was not keen on the job but Hafeez (has) expressed his availability,” a&nbsp;source told PTI.

"Rashid was more interested in working on anti-corruption issues. Hafeez who played 55 Tests, 218 ODIs and 119 T20Is for Pakistan before retiring last year, made it clear that he would like the challenge of working as the chief selector," he&nbsp;opined.

Hafeez made his international debut in 2003 and went on to represent the country in all three forms of the game. He ended his glittering career with 3,652,&nbsp;6,614 and 2,514 runs in Tests, ODIs and T20Is respectively. In addition, he was a handy spinner who returned with a total of 253 scalps at the highest level. The former batter also led Pakistan in the shortest format, being in-charge of the side during the 2012 and 2014 T20 World Cup. In the 2012 edition, the one-time winners reached the semi-final under Hafeez's captaincy.&nbsp;

The source further revealed that Ashraf is yet to decide whether to change the entire selection committee&nbsp;or just name a new chief selector, who will succeed Haroon&nbsp;Rasheed.

"It is unlikely the entire selection committee will be changed because of the heavy schedule of the Pakistan team after the Sri Lanka tour as Afghanistan have also confirmed a ODI series in Sri Lanka in August before the Asia Cup," the source added.

After the end of Pakistan's tour of Sri Lanka, Mohammed Hafeez -- former Men in Green skipper and 2017 Champions Trophy winner -- is expected to take over as the national team's chief selector. Hafeez, who represented Pakistan in 55 Tests, 218 ODIs and 119 T20Is, has been a huge contributor to Pakistan cricket and is expected to take over a post that is lying vacant after Pakistan Cricket Board's Cricket Management Committee (CMC) got dissolved in June. Former Pakistan captain and CT winner front-runner to become national team's chief selector: Report

The drama regarding Pakistan's participation in the forthcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 is far from over. An&nbsp;upcoming ICC meeting is set to take place in Durban, South Africa and the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Zaka Ashraf, is keen to push for the Babar Azam-led Men in Green to play their World Cup games at neutral venues. It is mainly because India didn't agree to travel to Pakistan for this year's Asia Cup&nbsp;to be held in August-September.

<h2>'Want neutral venues if India doesn’t want to send its team to Pakistan for Asia Cup'</h2>

“Zaka Ashraf will bring up the issue of why can’t Pakistan’s matches in the World Cup be played at neutral venues when the Indian team can’t travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. I want our World Cup matches at neutral venues if India doesn’t want to send its team to Pakistan for Asia Cup. If they have security problems in Pakistan according to the Indian board, then we can also question the security situation in India,” said Ahsan Mazari as quoted by PTI.&nbsp;

Pakistan's participation in the 50-over showpiece event has become a huge talking point. The&nbsp;final decision&nbsp;will be taken by their&nbsp;government. However, there is no end to the drama between PCB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). While the Indian cricket board made it clear that they won't send their team to Pakistan for this year's Asia Cup, the tournament's future was under dark clouds before a hybrid model came up, with the India games -- including their marquee clash versus Pakistan -- to be held in Sri Lanka.&nbsp;

Only four matches&nbsp;of the Asia Cup 2023 edition will take place in Pakistan, allowing Babar &amp; Co.&nbsp;to take the field in front of their home fans only once. Thus, this has not been well received by the PCB, whereas their demands with regard to the venue changes for the ODI World Cup have&nbsp;also not been entertained.

Thus, Ashraf aims to push Pakistan's ODI WC games to be played at neutral venues and not in India. As of now, the 1992 champions are&nbsp;set to play their nine league-stage games in five different venues&nbsp;in India.

Pakistan's schedule at CWC' 23

October 6: Pakistan vs Netherlands, Hyderabad
October 12: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka, Hyderabad
October 15: Pakistan vs India, Ahmedabad
October 20: Pakistan vs Australia, Bengaluru
October 23: Pakistan vs Afghanistan, Chennai
October 27: Pakistan vs South Africa, Chennai
October 31: Pakistan vs Bangladesh, Kolkata
November 4: Pakistan vs New Zealand, Bengaluru
November 12: Pakistan vs England, Kolkata

It remains to be seen if there will be any change with regard to the Asia Cup whereas Pakistan's participation in the ODI WC is also subject to clearance by their government.

PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf to push for Pakistan to play ODI WC games at neutral venues during ICC meeting

On Tuesday (June 27), the International Cricket Council (ICC) released the full schedule of the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition, to be held in India in October-November. After the schedule was made official, the Pakisan Cricket Board (PCB) said that it requires clearance from the government to take part in the mega event in India. Now, the ICC has responded to PCB's statement and stated that they are confident of the 1992 winner's participation in the showpiece event in the subcontinent.

<h2>'We are confident Pakistan will be in India for CWC'23'</h2>

"Pakistan have signed a participation agreement to compete and we expect them to be there and have had no indications to the contrary," an ICC statement said on the matter. "All members have to abide by the rules and the laws of their country and we respect that. But we're confident Pakistan will be in India for the Men's Cricket World Cup," added the statement.

It is to be noted that the PCB&nbsp;statement came following the schedule announcement. "The PCB requires the Government of Pakistan's clearance for any tour to India, including the match venues. We are liaising with our government for guidance, and as soon as we hear something from them, we will update the Event Authority (ICC). This position is consistent with what we had told the ICC a couple of weeks ago when they shared with us the draft schedule and sought our feedback," said the PCB statement.

The ODI World Cup schedule came out only 100 days before the tournament's commencement. As per reports, one of the main reasons for the delay was PCB's requests for venue changes. The Pakistani board wanted venues to be shifted for their games versus Afghansitan (Chennai) and Australia (Bengaluru). They wanted the venues to be swapped for the two games whereas they also raised concerns on playing India in Ahmedabad on October 15.&nbsp;

Nonetheless, none of PCB's reported requests were accepted as ICC and BCCI released the schedule earlier this week. Pakistan will open their campaign versus Qualifier 1 in Hyderabad on October 06 and meet arch-rivals India on October 15.&nbsp;

CWC'23: 'They have signed...' - ICC on Pakistan's participation in mega event in India

The ICC released the full schedule of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 on Tuesday (June 27). The schedule was revealed only 100 days prior to the tournament opener, which is set to take place on October 05. As per reports, a reason for the delay was due to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as it raised concerns over playing at certain venues. For instance, it was reported that the Pakistani board wanted the venues for their games versus Afghanistan (in Chennai) and Australia (in Bengaluru) to be swapped and also objected to playing against India in Ahmedabad&nbsp;on October 15.

Nonetheless, the final schedule saw none of PCB's reported requests being taken into account. After the schedule was out, PCB made it clear that they are yet to get clearance from their government to play the ODI World Cup in India and they will inform the ICC once they get the nod. In this regard, former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali reacted to all the developments and slammed the board for asking for venue changes. In addition, he feels that Pakistan should stick to the venues offered -- as it can work to their advantage -- and are confident of the Men in Green's participation in the mega event.

<h2>'ICC's schedule for the World Cup is a huge advantage for Pakistan'</h2>

"I am hearing on news channels and YouTube that Pakistan may not be willing to play their matches in Ahmedabad and one more venue. Why not? ICC's schedule for the World Cup is a huge advantage for Pakistan. If 1,25,000 come to attend the match in Ahmedabad, the pressure is on India, and not Pakistan. If India was to play the Asia Cup in Pakistan, then the pressure would have been on Pakistan.

"I don't know why people can't understand this simple thing. And Afghanistan is a weak team - yes, they have good spinners - but wherever the schedule has been finalised, just play. This is nonsense. I keep hearing that Pakistan may not get the permission. Of course, they will. Boss, it's not some local tournament. It's a bloody World Cup," Basit said on his Youtube channel.&nbsp;

"Now the second part… the advantage which Pakistan has. Normally, each team will be playing two warm-up matches, but in Pakistan's case, they will technically be playing 4 – two practice games and one each against the two qualifying teams – before they face India in Ahmedabad. If Pakistan go into the India tie on the back of a formidable show against the four teams previously, it will be a huge boost for them and the players.

"Imagine Babar Azam scoring a century or Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah picking a five-wicket haul. Just imagine what it will do to their confidence against India. So it is my heartfelt request. Please play your matches as per the schedule."

Pakistan's schedule for ODI World Cup

September 29 - vs New Zealand in Hyderabad
October 03 - vs Australia in Hyderabad
October 6 - vs Qualifier 1 in Hyderabad
October 12 - vs Qualifier 2 in Hyderabad
October 15 - vs India in Ahmedabad
October 20 - vs Australia in Bengaluru
October 23 - vs Afghanistan in Chennai
October 27 - vs South Africa in Chennai
October 31 - vs Bangladesh in Kolkata
November 4 - vs New Zealand Bengaluru (Day match)
November 12 - vs England in Kolkata

Pakistan does have an easy schedule for the marquee event. They will play their two warm-up games in Hyderabad. In addition, their first two matches in the main draw are at the same venue before the mega face-off versus India on October 15&nbsp;in Ahmedabad. Overall, Babar Azam &amp; Co. will play their nine league matches across five venues – Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Kolkata. On the contrary, India will play their nine league fixtures in as many different venues -- most by any side -- and, thus, will have to manage the workload of their players wisely.

Ex-Pakistan player slams PCB's ODI WC requests, confident of Men in Green's participation

The International Cricket Council (ICC) released the full schedule of the upcoming ODI World Cup, which will be held in October-November in India. The schedule came out only 100 days before the commencement of the showpiece event. As per reports, the delay was mainly because of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) asking the ICC and Board of Control for Cricket In India (BCCI) to change the venues for two of their games. PCB wanted the venues for the games versus Afghanistan (Chennai) and Australia (Bengaluru) to be swapped.

In addition, PCB wanted Ahmedabad to be removed from hosting their marquee face-off versus India. Nonetheless, the draft schedule was approved with no tweaking.&nbsp;Now, former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal has lashed out at PCB for their unusual ODI WC request.&nbsp;

<h2>'You shouldn't say such things and instead, pull down the level of your cricket'</h2>

“Conditions, venues shouldn't be a concern for teams anymore. These things shouldn't happen in international cricket. Today, India beat Australia, South Africa, New Zealand on their own turf. We shouldn't be making excuses like why we are playing against Afghanistan in Chennai, or India in Ahmedabad. Your focus should be on cricket only,” Akmal said during an interview with&nbsp;paktv.tv.

“It's my request to board members, stop making such low-standard requests. The level of international cricket has advanced now. Players should be proud of their achievements, they should know what the fans and the board expect from them. You shouldn't say such things and instead pull down the level of your cricket,” Akmal added.

Pakistan will open their campaign versus Qualifier 1 on October 06 in Hyderabad whereas they are set to face arch-rivals India on October 15 in Ahmedabad. In the last edition, Sarfaraz Ahmed-led Men in Green ended fifth and failed to reach the semi-finals.&nbsp;

Under Babar Azam, the one-time winners will hope to go the distance and clinch their second title after 1992.

'Stop making low-standard...': Former Pakistan wicketkeeper lashes out at PCB for ODI WC requests

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) named a 16-member squad last week for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Babar Azam will lead the Pakistan cricket team in the series scheduled to take place in July. Mohammad Rizwan, on the other hand, retained his role as the vice-captain of the team. The decision to name Rizwan as Babar’s deputy, seems to have not gone down well with former Pakistan cricketer Rashid Latif. The ex-wicketkeeper stated that Sarfaraz Ahmed should have been appointed as the vice-captain of the Pakistan Test team. Criticising the decision to name Rizwan as the vice-captain, Latif said that Sarfaraz’s experience and performance suit him for the role.

"Sarfaraz is the kind of player they [PCB] could have named the vice-captain on this tour. He is capable. He made a comeback after Rizwan's drop in form. Sarfaraz will be part of the playing XI due to previous performance. So retaining Rizwan as vice-captain is not justifiable," Rashid Latif said on YouTube channel Caught Behind.

<h2>A terrific comeback</h2>

Sarfaraz Ahmed made his Test comeback during the series against New Zealand in December last year. The move to bring back Sarfaraz in the playing XI paid off as the 36-year-old was in sublime form in the two-match Test series against the Kiwis. Coming as Mohammad Rizwan’s replacement, Sarfaraz scored 335 runs in the series at an impressive average of 83.75. Sarfaraz’s brilliant campaign against New Zealand comprised three half centuries and one ton. He had also emerged as the top run-scorer in the Test series. Sarfaraz, quite unsurprisingly, was adjudged Man of the Series for his magnificent batting.

In Tests, Sarfaraz Ahmed has till now represented Pakistan in 51 matches. The Karachi-born has so far scored 2992 Test runs at an average of 38.85. Overall, Sarfaraz has four centuries and 21 half centuries to his name in red-ball cricket.

<h2>Morne Morkel’s appointment</h2>

According to media reports, Morkel will be a part of the Pakistan coaching staff during the Test series against Sri Lanka. The two matches between Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be a part of the new World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle.

The decision to name Mohammad Rizwan as Babar Azam’s deputy, has not gone down well with Rashid Latif. The former wicketkeeper stated that Sarfaraz Ahmed should have been appointed as the vice-captain of the Pakistan Test side.

× A terrific comeback Sarfaraz Ahmed made his Test comeback during the series against New Zealand in December last year.
