As per the ICC Code of Conduct, the players are liable for five per cent cut of their match fee for every over short and hence the 20 per cent fine for the Pakistan team. After loss against India, Pakistan also lost against Australia and Afghanistan before the one wicket loss against South Africa. The game against Proteas was something that will sting them for a long time as the bowlers had brought them back from nowhere to almost win the game.

Chasing 271, South Africa were 235/5 in 37th over before Pak bowlers displayed precision and skill to get four wickets and leave South Africa 11 runs short of the target with last pair on the crease. Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi, however, held their nerve and guided South Africa home for their fifth win of the tournament.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was visibly distraught after the game and agreed that they have missed the chance to stay in the tournament.

Pakistan Director of Men's Cricket Mickey Arthur, however, is confident that the Men in Green can still win the ODI World Cup.

“We said in the change room the other night that we have got six matches to win the World Cup,” Arthur told PCB Digital.

“We have to get on a streak and win six in a row. We know that as a unit, we know that as a team, we have to make sure we get our strategy 100%. We have to make sure that we get our execution 100% and if we do that, there is no reason why we cannot [win the World Cup].”

The 1992 World Cup winners are going through a tough phase after starting their campaign with the wins against Netherlands and Sri Lanka. The Babar Azam-led team then lost to India by seven wickets in the third game, by 62 runs against Australia in the fourth game and by eight wickets against Afghanistan in their last game.

The loss against Afghanistan has turned the faces of former Pakistan cricketers red as they questioned the current team's mentality, fitness and Babar's captaincy as well.

Amid the criticism, the Pakistan Cricket Board, issued a media release which said: "The national team still has four crucial matches remaining in the round-robin stage, and the PCB is optimistic that the team will regroup, overcome the setbacks and perform positively and effectively in the upcoming fixtures."

Thus, a new captain can be appointed sooner than later.

"Only if Pakistan can stage a miracle and win all their remaining matches to qualify for the semi-finals of this World Cup does Babar stand any chance of surviving as captain and even then he might be relegated to skipper in just the red ball format," one reliable source close to the developments said, as per PTI.

"It is over for Babar because he has been given unbridled power and authority as captain and more importantly he has always had players of his choice in the team. There has never been any attempt to reduce his authority and so he is now being held solely responsible for the Asia Cup and World Cup defeats," the source mentioned.

The source further revealed that despite advice from former captains such as Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammed Hafeez to make some changes to the final World Cup squad, Babar got all the 18 players he wanted and was backed by PCB chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq.&nbsp;

"The PCB Chairman, Zaka Ashraf ignored the advice of Misbah and Hafeez and some other former players whom he consulted as Babar was adamant he didn't want changes in the team for the World Cup," the source said.

Misbah, former captain and coach, also confirmed on a television channel that he had asked Babar to include mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed in the World Cup squad. However, the current skipper only added him as a travelling reserve.

It is to be noted that lobbies for the possible candidates, including Sarfaraz, Shaheen, Rizwan and Shan Masood have already started their work to get their candidate selected. In a likely scenario, the PCB is contemplating different captains for the red and white-ball formats.

"Sarfaraz might win the nod to captain the Test and ODI sides again while Shaheen may get a chance to be the T20 captain," the source added. Sarfaraz is not part of the Babar-led ODI World Cup squad.

Babar was appointed T20I captain in late 2019 but became the all-format skipper by 2021.

Kuldeep Yadav will end as ODI World Cup 2023's highest wicket-taker, predicts former Pakistan captain

Pakistan sports presenter Zainab Abbas who had landed in India to cover the ICC ODI World Cup has been deported&nbsp;after a Delhi-based lawyer filed a complaint against her. The lawyer claimed that Abbas made derogatory remarks against the Hindu faith and beliefs in old posts on X, formerly known as Twitter.&nbsp;

According to reports, Abbas exited India over "safety concerns" and is currently in Dubai over allegations involving cybercrime and anti-India posts.&nbsp;

Recently, the screenshots of the posts showing Abbas making Hinduphobic remarks went viral on social media as netizens demanded the government and BCCI take action against her.&nbsp;

Vineet Jindal, the lawyer based in Delhi took to X last week to share the complaint filed against Abbas. Jindal urged top authorities to take suitable action against Abbas.&nbsp;

Ahead of the clash, Dav Whatmore -- Sri Lanka's ODI World Cup-winning coach and former Australian cricketer -- pointed out that the Men in Green need to improve in the fielding department in order to progress ahead in the marquee competition in India.&nbsp;

Speaking to Wion, Whatmore opined on how Pakistan is shaping up for the 50-over showpiece event. Pakistan enter the CWC '23 edition on the back of a disastrous run in the Asia Cup and two back-to-back defeats in the warm-up games. However, the No. 2 ranked ODI side is backed as one of the strongest contenders due to the subcontinental conditions and a well-oiled side.

Whatmore reflected on their warm-up losses and stated, "Look, they should have won that game (versus New Zealand in the warm-ups). But it is at the same ground where they open up their campaign versus the Netherlands (in Hyderabad). Anybody would argue the fact that they will win. They should win comfortably tomorrow. I think they lost a bit of confidence versus New Zealand. Against Australia in their second warm-up match, they whacked them over the park. Australia allowed them to come close with their bowling effort (Pakistan managed 337 in pursuit of 352). Hence, confidence would have been jolted a bit. But, they should do well tomorrow which will lift their confidence."

Whatmore further stated on Pakistan's unpredictable tag and said, "They have been inconsistent. They have been guilty in that regard. But in this tournament, where the focus will be on them from the whole world, they will be as consistent as they possibly can."

The former SL coach mentioned the area of concern for Babar &amp; Co. In this regard, he asserted, "Their fielding historically has never been up to the mark. They have been guilty of some bad pictures of fielding. That department of the game can improve surely. On the batting, they have done well. They have got over 300 in both practice games. They fell short versus the Kiwis and had some easy bowling to hit versus the Aussies but their batting is not too good. They know their roles and if they get good starts, they have a good platform to really launch in the last ten overs -- like every other team."

'Pakistan's fielding has...': Dav Whatmore on Babar Azam-led Men in Green ahead of their CWC '23 opener

The recently concluded Asia Cup tournament saw India and Pakistan face off each other twice. While the group-stage match couldn't be completed due to rain, India came out triumphant in the Super Four stage. The players from both teams showed a lot of 'respect and camaraderie' to each other during the games both on and off the field. Some former cricketers, however, called out the 'lack of aggression' between the two teams as compared to older India and Pakistan teams.

Reacting to the same question, Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf snapped at a journalist before his team's departure to India for the ODI World Cup which starts on October 5. India and Pakistan are set to face off each other on October 14 in Ahmedabad during the quadrennial tournament.

“Why should I go and fight with Indians? It is cricket and not war," Rauf said in response to the question on aggression.

Notably, Rauf was one of the two Pak pacers who got injured during the Super Four game loss against India and didn't come out to bat. The other pacer, Naseem Shah, has been ruled out of the World Cup completely.

“Playing in any tournament for your country is a big deal. My fitness is better than before. We have confidence in ourselves as a team. The team management will decide whether to give me the new ball or the old ball,” Rauf said about his fitness

“I have no specific goal set for the World Cup. More emphasis is on team performance than individual performance,” he further added.

Pakistan team's departure to India also got delayed after some issues in receiving an India visa. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had written to the International Cricket Council (ICC) about the issue on Monday, September 24 and hours after that they got the visas.

Pakistan are scheduled to play two warm-up games&nbsp;against New Zealand and Australia&nbsp;on September 29 and October 3, respectively, before starting their campaign on October 6 against the Netherlands.

A Dutch court on Monday sentenced former Pakistan international cricketer Khalid Latif to 12 years in prison for urging the murder of anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders.

Latif, 37, had offered 21,000 euros ($22,500) for the head of Wilders in an online video after the firebrand lawmaker sought to arrange a competition for cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

"It was not a stretch to think that somebody around the world would have taken heed of the call to kill Mr Wilders," presiding judge G. Verbeek told the court.

"The accused knew this and his call fuelled the fire to have Wilders killed."

It is extremely unlikely that Latif, who was convicted in absentia, will serve his sentence. Dutch authorities have sought in vain to question Latif over the case and requested legal assistance from Pakistan, also to no avail.&nbsp;

"It's a good sentence, but it's a pity that the accused is not here in court," Wilders told reporters outside, sporting his trademark peroxide hairdo.

"It is no longer acceptable that the Pakistani authorities refuse to cooperate. I am going to ask the prime minister to ensure that Khalid Latif is arrested in Pakistan and extradited to the Netherlands," he added.

Wilders cancelled the cartoon contest after protests broke out in Pakistan and he was inundated with death threats. He has been under 24-hour state protection since 2004.

In the Netherlands, the plan to stage the contest was criticised widely with politicians, local media and ordinary citizens slamming the idea as needlessly antagonising Muslims.

But the call to kill Wilders appeared to resonate in the real world, with a Pakistani man sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2019 for plotting his assassination in the wake of the cancelled contest.

Judge Verbeek said Latif's video was not just an attack on Wilders personally, but also on the concept of free speech in the Netherlands.

Latif played five one-day internationals and 13 T20 internationals for Pakistan but was banned from cricket for five years in 2017 for spot-fixing in a Pakistan Super League match in Dubai.

His last Pakistan appearance was against the West Indies in Abu Dhabi in September 2016.

However, Verbeek said that Latif had benefitted from his fame as an international cricketer to "add oil to the fire" at a time when the Netherlands was already the target of several threats.&nbsp;

The Men In Green have included Faheem Ashraf in place of spinner Mohammad Nawaz for the match against India. "We're testing out different combinations to see what works for us," Babar said about the combination. "We haven't quite worked out exactly how to best approach the middle overs, but we're finishing and starting very well thanks to our fast bowlers. It's a team effort. As a team, we try and get the best out of our players."

The group stage match, however, couldn't get completed because of the rain and that's why a reserve day has been added to the Super Four stage match.

In the second game, in Sri Lanka, the home side beat Bangladesh by five wickets on Thursday (August 31). In the two games, as well as during India's team photo shoot, many observed that Pakistan's name was missing&nbsp;from the team jerseys.

It is to be noted that&nbsp;Pakistan remain the original hosts despite nine out of 13 games being held in Sri Lanka. The 2023 edition is being held in a hybrid model -- for the first time in Asia Cup's history -- after India made it clear that they won't travel to Pakistan due to strained relations. Last year's edition was held in the UAE but Sri Lanka remained the original hosts and their name was mentioned in team jerseys (below the Asia Cup's logo). However, eyebrows have been raised with the same trend not being followed this year.

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif said, as quoted by Hindustan Times, "This is unacceptable and it is the Asian Cricket Council which must explain this oversight since the Asia Cup is their property."

He now tops the list of batsmen who are fastest to reach 19 ODI tons, leaving past the likes of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla.

A former Pakistani international cricketer went on trial Tuesday in the Netherlands for allegedly attempting to incite the murder of anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders, with prosecutors demanding a 12-year sentence if convicted.

Dutch public prosecutors said Khalid Latif, 37, who remains in Pakistan, had offered 21,000 euros ($23,000) in an online video 2018 in which he called for Wilders' killing.

"Not only was his goal to end a human life with violence, but with his appeal he tried to silence a Dutch representative," she said at a court hearing, held at a high security courthouse near Schiphol airport.

"Calling for a murder to prevent the cartoon competition and offering a sum of money to kill the organiser of that competition should be very severely punished as far as the Public Prosecution is concerned," Kuipers added, before asking for a 12-year sentence.

Neither Latif, nor any lawyer were present in the courtroom.

The Pakistani embassy in The Hague had no comment directly after the hearing and Latif could not be immediately reached for comment.&nbsp;

Kuipers said prosecutors have tried since 2018 to speak to the cricketer and handed over a request to Islamabad for legal assistance, to no avail.

The Netherlands does not have a treaty regarding legal assistance with Pakistan, she said.

"The questions we have for Latif remain unanswered," Kuipers said.

Wilders, who was in court during the hearing, told the judges death threats on his life increased after his plans to stage the controversial cartoon competition.

Known for his firebrand comments about Islam, Wilders has been under 24-hour state protection since 2004.&nbsp;

But "whatever you find of the cartoon competition, there is no reason to put a price of death on somebody's head for it," Wilders said.

Addressing Latif personally, Wilders said "your call to have me murdered will never silence me."

The verdict is due to be handed down on September 11.

Latif 37, who played five one-day internations and 13 T20Is for Pakistan, was banned from cricket for five years in 2017 for spot-fixing in a Pakistan Super League match in Dubai.

He completed his ban last year and has since been living a low-profile life in Karachi, coaching at club level.&nbsp;

Towards the end of the year, India lost the ODIs to hosts Bangladesh, conceded a home 50-over series to Australia early this year, came second in the WTC final and also lost the five T20I series to West Indies, held in West Indies and USA.

Injuries have plagued India's run as they still await the fitness reports of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer ahead of the Asia Cup, which kicks off later this month.

Thus, the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led Indian team had lots on their plate ahead of the ODI World Cup at home, in October-November. 
 
In this regard, Latif spoke at length about India's current struggles and believes things would have been different, had Kohli remained the captain.&nbsp;

Pakistan left-arm pacer Wahab Riaz announces international retirement before Asia Cup

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) shared a video on Pakistan cricket on the country's 76th Independence Day on Monday (August 14).&nbsp;The two-minute 21-second clip traced back to Pakistan's international cricket debut in 1952 and captured some of their biggest moments, such as the&nbsp;historic ODI World Cup triumph in 1992 till the 2022 T20 World Cup where Babar Azam-led Men in Green reached the final.

However, the video has not been well-received by the Pakistan cricket fans. The short clip is facing a severe backlash as it did not involve Imran Khan, the national captain and former prime minister who led Pakistan to their first-ever mega title during the 1992 ODI World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The caption of the video reads, "Making history isn't just about one day; it's about the legends we create and the tales we script. Pakistan Cricket Team – a legacy that echoes through time."

The viral clip comprised some big names from Pakistan cricket such as Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Waqar Younis, Shahid Afridi, and Babar.

It displayed some of their glorious moments in 1992 win, the 2009 T20 World Cup victory and&nbsp;2017 Champions Trophy win, where they trounced India in the summit clash. However, Imran -- a veteran of 88 Tests and 175 ODIs -- was nowhere to be found.&nbsp;

Imran has been a huge name in Pakistan cricket. He remains one of the finest cricketers of all time. He ended with&nbsp;3,807 and&nbsp;3,709 Test and ODI runs, respectively, along with claiming a total of 544 international wickets (362 of them came in the purest format) during his sparkling international career (spanning from 1971-1994). He turned to politics and served as Pakistan's Prime Minister (the country's 22nd overall) from August 2018 to April 2022.&nbsp;

Apart from Imran, the likes of Mohammad Yousuf -- who still holds the record for the most runs in a calendar year in Tests --&nbsp;and former opener Saeed Anwar were also not part of the PCB video.&nbsp;

The viral clip comprised some big names from Pakistan cricket such as Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Waqar Younis, Shahid Afridi, and Babar. 'Disgusting': Fans react after Imran Khan ousted from PCB's video on Pakistan cricket legends

The former cricketers and experts were baffled with how India utilised the likes of Axar Patel, Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson in the series whereas many slammed them for overlooking Yuzvendra Chahal. Now, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has lashed out at Team India for the way they have used some players in the recent ODIs.

Butt said on his official YouTube channel, "I absolutely agree (that India's experiment with Ishan was confusing). One guy being dropped after scoring 200... what's the point? Either they accept the fact that he is second option, even if he scores 1000 runs in a single innings. That never gives you the feeling of being the best, that never gives you the feeling that you will be rewarded for your performances. Currently, the feeling is no matter what you do, you will be the second option."

Rashid was not keen on the job but Hafeez (has) expressed his availability,” a&nbsp;source told PTI.

"Rashid was more interested in working on anti-corruption issues. Hafeez who played 55 Tests, 218 ODIs and 119 T20Is for Pakistan before retiring last year, made it clear that he would like the challenge of working as the chief selector," he&nbsp;opined.

In addition, he was a handy spinner who returned with a total of 253 scalps at the highest level. The former batter also led Pakistan in the shortest format, being in-charge of the side during the 2012 and 2014 T20 World Cup. In the 2012 edition, the one-time winners reached the semi-final under Hafeez's captaincy.&nbsp;

The source further revealed that Ashraf is yet to decide whether to change the entire selection committee&nbsp;or just name a new chief selector, who will succeed Haroon&nbsp;Rasheed.

"It is unlikely the entire selection committee will be changed because of the heavy schedule of the Pakistan team after the Sri Lanka tour as Afghanistan have also confirmed a ODI series in Sri Lanka in August before the Asia Cup," the source added.

The drama regarding Pakistan's participation in the forthcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 is far from over. An&nbsp;upcoming ICC meeting is set to take place in Durban, South Africa and the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Zaka Ashraf, is keen to push for the Babar Azam-led Men in Green to play their World Cup games at neutral venues. It is mainly because India didn't agree to travel to Pakistan for this year's Asia Cup&nbsp;to be held in August-September.

“Zaka Ashraf will bring up the issue of why can’t Pakistan’s matches in the World Cup be played at neutral venues when the Indian team can’t travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. I want our World Cup matches at neutral venues if India doesn’t want to send its team to Pakistan for Asia Cup. If they have security problems in Pakistan according to the Indian board, then we can also question the security situation in India,” said Ahsan Mazari as quoted by PTI.&nbsp;

Pakistan's participation in the 50-over showpiece event has become a huge talking point. The&nbsp;final decision&nbsp;will be taken by their&nbsp;government. However, there is no end to the drama between PCB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). While the Indian cricket board made it clear that they won't send their team to Pakistan for this year's Asia Cup, the tournament's future was under dark clouds before a hybrid model came up, with the India games -- including their marquee clash versus Pakistan -- to be held in Sri Lanka.&nbsp;

Only four matches&nbsp;of the Asia Cup 2023 edition will take place in Pakistan, allowing Babar &amp; Co.&nbsp;to take the field in front of their home fans only once. Thus, this has not been well received by the PCB, whereas their demands with regard to the venue changes for the ODI World Cup have&nbsp;also not been entertained.

Thus, Ashraf aims to push Pakistan's ODI WC games to be played at neutral venues and not in India. As of now, the 1992 champions are&nbsp;set to play their nine league-stage games in five different venues&nbsp;in India.

After the schedule was made official, the Pakisan Cricket Board (PCB) said that it requires clearance from the government to take part in the mega event in India. Now, the ICC has responded to PCB's statement and stated that they are confident of the 1992 winner's participation in the showpiece event in the subcontinent.

Babar Azam will lead the Pakistan cricket team in the series scheduled to take place in July. Mohammad Rizwan, on the other hand, retained his role as the vice-captain of the team. The decision to name Rizwan as Babar’s deputy, seems to have not gone down well with former Pakistan cricketer Rashid Latif. The ex-wicketkeeper stated that Sarfaraz Ahmed should have been appointed as the vice-captain of the Pakistan Test team. Criticising the decision to name Rizwan as the vice-captain, Latif said that Sarfaraz’s experience and performance suit him for the role.

"Sarfaraz is the kind of player they [PCB] could have named the vice-captain on this tour. He is capable. He made a comeback after Rizwan's drop in form. Sarfaraz Ahmed made his Test comeback during the series against New Zealand in December last year. The move to bring back Sarfaraz in the playing XI paid off as the 36-year-old was in sublime form in the two-match Test series against the Kiwis. Coming as Mohammad Rizwan’s replacement, Sarfaraz scored 335 runs in the series at an impressive average of 83.75. Sarfaraz’s brilliant campaign against New Zealand comprised three half centuries and one ton. He had also emerged as the top run-scorer in the Test series. Sarfaraz, quite unsurprisingly, was adjudged Man of the Series for his magnificent batting.

In Tests, Sarfaraz Ahmed has till now represented Pakistan in 51 matches. The Karachi-born has so far scored 2992 Test runs at an average of 38.85. Overall, Sarfaraz has four centuries and 21 half centuries to his name in red-ball cricket.

All-rounder James Neesham held his nerve in the final over to give New Zealand a dramatic four-run win over Pakistan in the third T20 international in Lahore on Monday despite Iftikhar Ahmed's brilliant innings.

Ahmed brought Pakistan back into the contest from 88-7 with a whirlwind 24-ball 60 as they attempted to chase down New Zealand's 163-5.

Needing 15 to win from Neesham's final over, he hit a six and a four to reduce the target to five off the last three deliveries.

But Neesham had Ahmed caught at long-on by Daryl Mitchell and then after a dot ball dismissed last man Haris Rauf in the same manner.

"It was a great game and it's satisfying to get across the line and keep the series alive," said visiting captain Tom Latham.

"I think the whole squad will take a lot of confidence from this match moving forward.

"The three early Pakistan wickets in the powerplay set us up and we pride ourselves on our fielding and keep the bar high every time we set foot into the middle."

Ahmed led the fightback with Faheem Ashraf as the pair added 61 for the eighth wicket, with Ashraf holing out after a 14-ball 27 studded with two sixes and as many fours.

Ahmed smashed six sixes and three fours.

The victory means New Zealand trail the five-match series 2-1 after Pakistan won the first two games, by 88 and 38 runs, also in Lahore.

The last two matches are in Rawalpindi on April 20 and 24.

Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals with prolific opening pair Babar Azam (one) and Mohammad Rizwan (six) both gone by the fourth over with the score on just 17.

Azam was caught at third man off pacer Adam Milne while Rizwan was found short of his crease after trying to take a sharp single.

Pakistan were further jolted by left-arm spinner Rachin Ravindra who dismissed Fakhar Zaman (17) and Imad Wasim for three while Saim Ayub fell to Neesham for 10.

Ish Sodhi dismissed Shaheen Shah Afridi for six and Milne accounted for Shadab Khan for 16, leaving Pakistan reeling.

The hosts battled back thanks to Ahmed, but were bowled out from the final ball on 159.

"We didn't bat well enough tonight," said Pakistan skipper Azam. "We kept losing wickets at crucial stages, because of which the pressure kept building throughout the run chase, but our bowling has been superb this series."

Earlier, New Zealand's innings was anchored by Latham's 64 after winning the toss.

Latham, who hit seven fours and two sixes, added 65 for the third wicket with Mitchell who scored a 26-ball 33.

Mark Chapman made 16 not out off nine balls as New Zealand managed to score 51 in the last five overs.

Shaheen -- playing his 50th T20I -- took 2-33 while his fellow pacer Rauf finished with 2-31.
