Speculations have been rife that the upcoming Oscar Awards 2025 may get cancelled due to the ongoing wildfires. The 97th Academy Awards aka Oscars is scheduled to take place on March 2. On Monday, the Academy shared a video clip of Aishwarya Rai from the hit film <em>Jodha Akbar</em> with a special announcement. The 2008 film featured Aishwarya Rai as Queen Jodhabai and Hrithik Roshan as Mughal Emperor Akbar. The film was directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar, whose film <em>Lagaan</em> was nominated at the Best Foreign Language Film Awards in 2002. </p>

<p>"The Seed of the Sacred Fig," a paranoid thriller that was shot in secret and depicts a family torn apart by Iran's brutally repressive politics, has earned rave reviews and won many festival prizes, including at Cannes.</p>

<p>But each country can submit just one movie for the best international film Oscar, and in authoritarian countries like Iran, that choice of film is made by state-controlled organizations.</p>

<p>"Of course, it is unimaginable that the Islamic Republic could have submitted a film like this for the Academy Awards," Rasoulof told AFP.</p>

<p>"In fact, if it were possible for the regime to submit it, the film would not have been made in the first place."</p>

<p>Instead, the film -- out Wednesday in US theaters -- has been selected as Germany's entry at the Academy Awards.</p>

<p>Germany has become an adopted homeland for Rasoulof. The movie was produced by German and French companies.</p>

<p>"Sacred Fig" now has a strong chance of being nominated at the glitzy Hollywood ceremony, and gaining huge global exposure.</p>

<p>"I'm delighted Germany saw the international scope of the film and opened its arms... it's like shining a torch, a sign to all filmmakers working under duress around the world," Rasoulof said while promoting the film in Los Angeles this month.</p>

<p>The movie is set during the "Women, Life, Freedom" protests that took place two years ago in Iran.</p>

<p>Those demonstrations were sparked by the death of a young woman after her arrest by "morality police" for violating the clerical regime's strict dress code.</p>

<p>Hundreds were killed in the ensuing crackdown by security forces, according to human rights groups.</p>

<p>The film follows Iman, an ambitious investigator-judge working for the regime, his wife Najmeh, and their two more curious and rebellious young daughters.</p>

<p>Iman is initially conflicted by having to sign death warrants without evidence. But regime pressure mounts on and corrupts him, driving a wedge through the family -- especially after his gun disappears from the home.</p>

<p>Rasoulof barely managed to attend the film's Cannes premiere in May, after daringly fleeing Iran on foot through treacherous mountain passes just days earlier.</p>

<p>The auteur, who has already spent time in jail, had just been sentenced to eight years in prison and flogging for denouncing the "corruption" and "incompetence" of authorities.</p>

<p>At the Cannes premiere, he held up photos of two lead actors in the film who were trapped in Iran.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One, Soheila Golestani, remains in Iran and faces "the greatest amount of pressure" as court proceedings have again accelerated against the filmmakers in recent weeks, said Rasoulof.</p>

<p>- 'Filmmaker-in-exile' -</p>

<p>Iran's official entry this year is "In The Arms Of The Tree." State media describes it as a drama that showcases "the beauty of this country" and portrays "the authenticity of the Iranian family."</p>

<p>Rasoulof admits he has little interest in watching any films "made following the dictates of Iranian censorship."</p>

<p>"They tend to be quite removed from reality. If you watch them, you feel that your intelligence is being insulted," he said.</p>

<p>For his latest film, Rasoulof drew on classic Hollywood influences, particularly for a fast-paced, intense and thoroughly creepy final act.</p>

<p>"I was influenced by two films -- 'Straw Dogs' by Sam Peckinpah, and 'The Shining' by Stanley Kubrick," he said.</p>

<p>"I really enjoyed playing with genres and mixing them in new ways," he said.</p>

<p>Among his next projects is an animated feature, which will tell the story of Abbas Nalbandian, a radical playwright who "had very momentous experiences around the (Iranian) Revolution."</p>

<p>The idea to work in animation came out of necessity, four or five years ago, when "I was thinking that I might not be able to film anything on the streets," recalled Rasoulof. "I was looking for ways to work around that."</p>

<p>But he is now keen to complete the project, even in exile -- a reality that he admits is yet to fully sink in.</p>

<p>"It's very hard to realize that it's actually been six months... that I'm a filmmaker-in-exile right now," said Rasoulof.</p>

<p>The Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof is known for leaving behind a difficult life. He has been living in Germany ever since his dramatic exit from Iran in May. He fled his country in the face of threats of flogging and imprisonment from the country’s authoritarian Islamic Republic regime.</p>

<p>The film will tell the story of his 28-days journey to escape Iran after shooting The Seed Of The Sacred Fig and how he landed in Germany.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While selecting his film, the jury said, “It is an outstanding work by one of the great directors of world cinema and someone who has found refuge in Germany from state despotism in Iran. We are very happy to know that Rasoulof is safe in our country. And we are delighted that he will be representing Germany at the Oscars in 2025.”</p>

<p><em>The Seed of the Sacred Fig</em> is a political thriller mixing fiction and the real-life protests in Iran. It takes inspiration from the pro-democracy protests which swept Iran in September 2022. These protests were in response to the killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the film, Misagh Zareh stars as Iman, a devout man who is promoted to the position of investigating judge at the Revolutionary Court in Tehran just as a huge protest movement sweeps the country following the death of a young woman. As the state cracks down with tough measures, he sides with the regime and upsets the balance of his family.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The film premiered in Competition at Cannes Film Festival shortly after the director's&nbsp;dramatic escape to Europe. At Cannes, it received the Competition’s Special Jury Prize, the FIPRESCI Prize, the European Art House Cinemas Award (AFCAE), the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury and the Prix François Chalais for Best Film.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The film that “tells the story of oppression and of hope and resistance, is the result of a unique collaboration between people with very different realities of life and migration histories.”</p>

<p><em>The Seed of the Sacred Fig</em> was produced by Run Way Pictures in co-production with Parallel45, ARTE France Cinéma and with the participation of ARTE France and in co-operation with Films Boutique.</p>

Now, up to three composers can receive individual Oscar statuettes if they all significantly contribute to a film’s music that has won. Earlier, all composers had to submit as a group. The most recent example of that is the band Son Lux for <em>Everything Everywhere All at Once. </em>Another recent example is of artists Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, winning just one statuette for their work in the animated film <em>Soul.</em></p>

<p>Also, the shortlist in this category has been expanded from 15 to 20 titles, which will be announced in late December before the official nomination voting period begins in January.</p>

<h2><strong>Eligibility criteria for films get changed</strong></h2>

<p>The Academy has also decided to no longer recognise drive-in theatres as a qualifying venue for Oscars eligibility. This rule was adopted during&nbsp; Covid times when movie theatres were closed. In the pandemic years, the Academy also allowed films shown on streaming and VOD platforms to qualify due to the pandemic.</p>

<p>Only those films will be considered for best picture which meet the expanded theatrical requirements that were announced in 2023. These include a one-week qualifying run in one of six US markets followed by a seven-day run, either consecutive or non-consecutive, in 10 of the top 50 US markets within 45 days of the initial release.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If films want to be considered for the Oscars’ top prize they must submit the Academy Representation and Inclusion Standards Entry (RAISE) form, meeting at least two of the four standards. Distributors and production teams are also advised to apply for the PGA Mark Certification for awards determination by the date of the film’s first qualifying run.</p>

<p>In the screenplay categories, submission of the final shooting script is now mandatory for consideration for original or adapted.</p>

<p>Animated films are eligible for the best international feature category and can also be considered for best-animated feature if they meet the requirements for both categories.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Governors Awards</strong></h2>

<p>The Governors Awards have also got an overhaul. The Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award will now be presented as an Oscar statuette instead of the traditional bust of Thalberg. The last recipients of the Thalberg Award were Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall in 2018.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lastly, two awards at the Scientific and Technical Awards have been renamed: the Gordon E. Sawyer Award is now the “Scientific and Technical Lifetime Achievement Award,” and the John A. Bonner Award has been renamed the “Scientific and Technical Service Award.”</p>
