<p>I hadn’t seen any film by the Daniels before I set my eyes upon<em> Everything Everywhere All at Once.</em> I resisted the urge to watch it because I am always suspicious of the initial hoopla that surrounds certain movies before they almost inevitably escape popular imagination. But with<em> Everything Everywhere All at Once </em>(<em>EEAAO</em> from now on), the hoopla only increased in volume until everybody was talking about this indie movie that was not indie anymore — in terms of box office numbers, that is. The film stars Michelle Yeoh as a harried Chinese immigrant woman called Evelyn Quran Wang whose overwrought life women in India and I imagine many other places in the world would empathise with. She lives with a fractious teenage daughter Joy Wang (Stephanie Hsu), and a meek husband Waymond Wang (Ke Huy Quan).&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Eleven Oscar nominations!</h2>

<p><em>Everything Everywhere All at Once</em> has 11 nominations, including the major categories like Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. The film will likely not do a <em>Return of the King</em> — the conclusion to Peter Jackson's <em>The Lord of the Rings </em>trilogy that clinched 11 trophies out of 11 nominations at the 76th Academy Awards. But if it wins in either of the three major categories, and it might likely win in two, it will end up with at least four or five trophies — not bad for a supposedly indie movie.</p>

<p>The multiverse, says alt-Waymond, is in peril because of an evil entity called Jobu Tupaki, and Evelyn is the last hope of all living beings on earth. For Tupaki experiences every reality all at once, can manipulate matter, and has plans to erase every reality from existence.</p>

<p>At this point, you would think the film will turn into a race against time to save the multiverse from the supervillain. It is what most movies of this kind do, after all. But no. <em>EEAAO </em>is a lot smarter than that. It riffs on everything from <em>The Matrix</em> to <em>Ratatouille </em>to Hong Kong martial arts movies, and remains endlessly fresh and inventive. It embraces the gloriously bonkers side of the multiverse, exploring horizons most films delving into similar ideas can barely touch. The two hour and twenty minutes of screen time, which would usually be intimidating, zips past.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Michelle Yeoh gives a superb performance</h2>

<p>Yeoh is in almost every frame of the movie, and a good thing too. For she is indescribably good — portraying the pain, confusion, exhaustion, and other moods with a veteran's ease. Stephanie Hsu, who plays her daughter Joy, also impresses, sporting different, gonzo outfits in nearly every other scene to exhibit her queerness. Ke Huy Quan is endearing as a timid but kind husband, who, lacking the hand-to-hand combat skills of his alt-universe counterpart, relies on his determination and genial, inoffensive personality to disarm people and get things done. This is&nbsp;the mother of all comebacks.</p>

To paraphrase Stephen Fry's words about PG Wodehouse's novels, you do not analyse such sunlit perfection, you just bask in its splendour.&nbsp;</p>

<p><em>Everything Everywhere All At Once</em> is an absolute blast and should take the Best Picture Oscar.</p>

I hadn’t seen any film by the Daniels before I set my eyes upon Everything Everywhere All at Once. I resisted the urge to watch it because I am always suspicious of the initial hoopla that surrounds certain movies before they almost inevitably escape popular imagination.

I hadn’t seen any film by the Daniels before I set my eyes upon Everything Everywhere All at Once. I resisted the urge to watch it because I am always suspicious of the initial hoopla that surrounds certain movies before they almost inevitably escape popular imagination. But with Everything Everywhere All at Once (EEAAO from now on), the hoopla only increased in volume until everybody was talking about this indie movie that was not indie anymore — in terms of box office numbers, that is. The film stars Michelle Yeoh as a harried Chinese immigrant woman called Evelyn Quran Wang whose overwrought life women in India and I imagine many other places in the world would empathise with. She lives with a fractious teenage daughter Joy Wang (Stephanie Hsu), and a meek husband Waymond Wang (Ke Huy Quan). Eleven Oscar nominations! Everything Everywhere All at Once has 11 nominations, including the major categories like Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. The film will likely not do a Return of the King — the conclusion to Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy that clinched 11 trophies out of 11 nominations at the 76th Academy Awards. But if it wins in either of the three major categories, and it might likely win in two, it will end up with at least four or five trophies — not bad for a supposedly indie movie. <p>It kind of is. Cameron is one of the finest, if a little temperamental, makers of blockbusters around today. Few, if any, can match up to his ability to craft exciting action and stunning and imaginative visuals. With the <em>Avatar </em>franchise, he ventured into conceptualising and creating an entirely new alien world (or moon, if you are being pedantic) with its own flora, fauna, ecology, atmosphere, and so on. Not only everything was rendered in mind-boggling detail, despite all the bright colours and fantasy-like feel, it was authentic — after a fashion. It really did seem as though Pandora exists somewhere in the outer reaches of the galaxy (okay, it is meant to exist in the Alpha Centauri System, which is actually the closest star system to our solar system).</p>

<p><em>The Way of Water </em>was only better. Everything was more lifelike, more detailed, and prettier. A lot of the film was set underwater, and Cameron once again showed mastery over envisaging fictitious and yet somehow tangibly real life forms.</p>

<p>It will take your breath away. Everything is gorgeous in a cinematic, dynamic way. It sounds weird when I say this, but despite being so beautiful, the film managed to be subtle. The visual elements seamlessly blended into one other, and the film encouraged one to forget everything one is looking at was created in computers. In a few shots, particularly in the water, it is certain Cameron was showing off. And indeed my jaw was hanging slack, wondering how in the world he did it.</p>

<h2>Will <em>Avatar: The Way of Water</em> win the Best Picture Oscar?</h2>

<p>That is the big question. My guess is no. Sure, the Academy might pull off a surprise, and not every movie that gets an Oscar is deserving or indeed worth watching. But it is likely that <em>The Way of Water</em> will not win an Oscar. The reason is, with all its splendour and eye candy, <em>The Way of Water</em>'s story is strictly serviceable. The director has never been an impressive deviser of complex, gripping plots and characters beyond surface level. He does have the uncanny ability to build exciting narratives around action set pieces, and <em>The Way of Water </em>is no exception. <em>The Way of Water</em>&nbsp;is, in effect, a typical Cameron movie with all its glories and downfalls. It all comes across as something we have seen before, and done much better.</p>

Just like <em>Avatar</em>, none too delicately, hammered home the point that we should protect our forests, <em>The Way of Water</em> brings our attention to the oceans. New creatures in the film include over-friendly whale-like mammals called tulkun, and naturally, there are whalers extracting from their blubber the Pandora equivalent of whale oil, Amrita. Similar to the nectar in Hindu mythology that is supposed to make its consumer immortal, Amrita stops aging.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Yes, the natural world and the equilibrium in fragile ecosystems are worth preserving. And yes, many indigenous populations have a strong connection to the flora and fauna in the regions they inhabit. Oh, and technology can often be dangerous. But we knew that already, Cameron. Say something new!</p>

<p>I jest, but only a little. <em>The Way of Water</em> is certainly worth watching once in the theatre in 3D. It is, I would say, a quintessential movie-viewing experience, and will wow you with its beauty. And yet, once you get out of it, the simplistic story rears its ugly head.</p>

Oscars Awards 2023 Best Picture nominee: Can Avatar 2 win the trophy?

<p><strong>Oscars Awards 2023:</strong> This is not a drill! Indian star Deepika Padukone has been announced as a presenter at the upcoming Oscar awards 2023. The academy announced its first set of presenters for the forthcoming awards which is scheduled to take place in Hollywood on March 12.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Deepika Padukone, Emily Blunt, Glenn Close, and Jennifer Connelly are some of the names that the Academy announced on Thursday as presenters at the award ceremony. Samuel L Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael B. Jordan, Janelle Monáe, Zoe Saldana,&nbsp;Riz Ahmed, Melissa McCarthy have also been named as presenters for the awards. The 95th Oscars will air live on ABC on Sunday, March 12, 2023. In India, the ceremony will be aired on March 13 early morning.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It’s almost going to be a year for Chris Rock and Will Smith’s slap gate, where the latter hit the comedian for making fun of his wife on the Oscars stage. The Academy Awards are back this year and people are expecting some drama to unfold over the slap gate scandal. Serving it up for his fans,&nbsp;Chris Rock will hit back on stage with a live standup special on Netflix. This will air on the OTT platform on March 4. He will address the set of events that unfolded between him and Will Smith post the incident.</p>

<p>This is not the first time that Chris will speak on the matter. He has, previously, spoken about it in his stand-up performances but never in such detail.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reports suggest that Chris Rock worked on the Netflix special in January and that he gave his audiences a hint of it during an arena show in Charlestown where he shared the stage with Dave Chappelle. Back then, he addressed the now-infamous moment with Will Smith. He also cracked some jokes about the collective outrage after the incident happened.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The thing people wanna know … did it hurt? Hell yeah, it hurt. He played Muhammad Ali! I played Pookie (in ‘New Jack City’). Even in animated movies, I’m a zebra, he’s a f—ing shark. I got hit so hard, I heard ‘Summertime’ ringing in my ears,” Rock joked in the Charlestown set.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Friday it was launching a review of Oscar's campaigning, days after a small indie film surprised industry watchers with a shock nomination to Hollywood's most prestigious awards.&nbsp;'To Leslie'&nbsp;had taken just $27,000 at the box office when star Andrea Riseborough's name appeared on the shortlist of nominees for Best Actress.</p>

<p>Riseborough, who plays a Texas single mother struggling with alcoholism, beat out presumed frontrunners Viola Davis ("The Woman King") and Danielle Deadwyler ("Till").</p>

<p>The nod came after an intense, last-minute social media campaign mounted on her behalf by celebrity friends including Edward Norton, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Sarah Paulson.</p>

<p>Movie industry magazine Variety said the Academy had received multiple calls and emails in the wake of the nomination, and there was a raging debate among moviemakers over whether rules had been broken.</p>

<p>On Friday, the Academy said it would be examining its processes, although it did not mention the film by name.</p>

<p>"It is the Academy’s goal to ensure that the Awards competition is conducted in a fair and ethical manner, and we are committed to ensuring an inclusive awards process," a statement said.</p>

<p>"We are conducting a review of the campaign procedures around this year’s nominees, to ensure that no guidelines were violated, and to inform us whether changes to the guidelines may be needed in a new era of social media and digital communication."</p>

<p>"We have confidence in the integrity of our nomination and voting procedures, and support genuine grassroots campaigns for outstanding performances."</p>

<p>The Oscars are awarded based on the votes of the 9,500 members of the Academy – many of them previous winners.</p>

<p>Academy membership is divided into 17 branches – actors, directors, producers, costume designers and so on – with each branch picking the nominees in their area of expertise.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With around 1,300 members of the actors' branch, a nominee in this category needs just over 200 votes to make the shortlist.</p>

<p>In the months ahead of the Oscars, which this year will be held on March 12, billboards in Los Angeles are plastered with advertisements for films as studios seek to persuade voting members.</p>

<p>There are also a host of parties and events aimed at generating a buzz.</p>

<p>Campaigns are often organised by professional companies and generally don't come cheap, so are usually the preserve of large studios.</p>

<p>But "To Leslie" was absent from this circuit.</p>
