Popular TV host Jimmy Kimmel was trolled by netizens as he joked with Malala Yousafzai and the internet didn’t find it funny. Jimmy had taken over the hosting duties at the Oscars 2023 ceremony when he passed on the mic to the Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai and asked her about a silly thing. He asked the Pakistani activist whether she knew about the beef between Harry Styles and Chris Pine.

Malala Yousafzai attended the Oscars event with husband Asser Malik.
Oscars 2023: During the 94th Academy Awards ceremony in March last year, Will Smith whacked comedian and presenter Chris Rock across the face in response to a joke he made about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Many viewers, including this scribe, initially believed the incident was scripted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organisation behind the Oscars. As far-fetched as it sounds, you wouldn't put it past them. The ratings of Oscar ceremonies, after all, have been plummeting every year, and something as spicy as this may have been deemed a much-needed boost by the overlords at the Academy.

However, Smith's outburst ("Keep my wife's name out of your f**king mouth!") after he got back to his chair made it clear that the incident was not staged but real. Amazingly, he went on to win his maiden Oscar later in the ceremony, for his performance as Richard Williams in King Richard.

What was the joke that got under Will Smith's skin?

During the ceremony, Rock was one of the presenters — tasked with presenting an award. In his brief bit, he joked about Jada. While referring to her, he said he can’t wait to see G.I. Jane 2. In a 1997 war film, G.I. Jane, Demi Moore’s protagonist, a female Navy Seal, shaves her head. The joke targetted Jada’s lack of hair, which is due to the alopecia condition. At first, Smith appeared to laugh, but after looking at his wife’s eyes roll, he chose to attack Rock.

What has happened in Will Smith-Chris Rock's 'slapgate' thus far?

It has been almost a year since the incident, but the controversy has refused to die down. As a punitive measure for his act of violence, in April last year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences banned Smith from the Oscars and any other events organised by the Academy for a decade following a meeting of the board of governors. Smith's actions have led to a change in the Hollywood outlook towards violence. Many have argued that Smith should not have been given his Oscar after the slap, and that he should have been charged with assault.

A lot has happened since then. Smith gave a half-hearted apology at first and later last year shared a more extensive apology, expressly naming Rock. In a video he shared on social media handles, he said, "Chris, I apologise to you. My behaviour was unacceptable. I am here whenever you are ready to talk. That was one of the things about that moment. I just didn’t realise. I wasn’t thinking but how many people got hurt in that moment. So I want to apologise to Chris’ mother. I want to apologise to Chris’ family.”

Rock earlier referred to the incident only peripherally in the early months, before truly unleashing himself in the recently-released Netflix comedy special, Chris Rock: Selective Outrage, the first live one from Netflix. “I love Will Smith, my whole life… he makes great movies. I have rooted for Will Smith my whole life. I root for this mo**erf***er. And now I watch Emancipation just to see him get whooped," he joked at one point.

What is the upshot of WillSmith-Chris Rock's 'slapgate'?

As a surprise to absolutely nobody, Smith's act of violence made his reputation plummet significantly. Variety reported last year that his popularity and approval ratings declined significantly after the slap. In the data provided by Q Scores to the publication, it appears that Smith was one of the top 5 or 10 rated actors in the US. But after the incident, his Q Score went down to 24 from 39. Henry Schafer, executive VP of Q Scores, said this is a significant drop. At the same time, his negative rating went up from 10 to 26. Even Jada's popularity suffered due to Smith's actions.

Celebrities for the most part sided with Rock and condemned Smith for the slap. Jim Carrey said during an appearance at CBS, "You do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words. That video is going to be there forever. It's going to be ubiquitous. That insult is going to last a very long time."

There were, however, some like Denzel Washington and Tiffany Haddish who also expressed sympathy with Smith. Washington said, "There but for the grace of God go any of us. Who are we to condemn? I don’t know all the ins and outs of the situation, but I know the only solution was prayer.”

Haddish on her part said that Smith "stood up" for his wife. "As a woman, who has been unprotected, for someone to say, 'Keep my wife's name out your mouth, leave my wife alone,' that's what your husband is supposed to do, right? Protect you," she said.

She added, "And that meant the world to me. And maybe the world might not like how it went down, but for me, it was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen because it made me believe that there are still men out there that love and care about their women, their wives."

The general public on the internet has reacted to the incident with humour. In the above video, a YouTube channel called It's Dynamite Remix released this remixed version of "Keep my wife's name out of your f**king mouth!" Sigh.

Oscar awards 2023: Lilly Singh arrives at Oscars 2023 with Vanessa Hudgens & Drew Afaulo as co-hosts

The biggest night cinema- the 95th Academy awards- honoured the best of the best in cinema world over on Sunday night. The Oscars 2023 was being hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the third time and was being held at Dolby Theatres in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Here's a list of the big wins.

Oscars 2023: Here's who won big at the Academy Awards

The 2023 Oscars saw two comebacks that garnered a lot of attention: Ke Huy Quan's return to the big screen in Everything Everywhere All at Once and Brendan Fraser's return in The Whale. They won an Oscar for their performance in their respective films: Quan in Best Supporting actor and Fraser in Best Actor categories. The interesting thing is that both these actors, who are darlings of Hollywood, won the trophy for their comeback movies. While Quan almost disappeared from acting after appearances in popular movies in the 1980s as a kid, Fraser never really went away, but he was only intermittently active in the film industry and not really getting good roles.

But with these Oscar-winning performances, Quan and Fraser have scripted the mother of all comebacks. Let's explore in brief the journey of these stars that led to this pinnacle.

Ke Huy Quan

Ke Huy Quan rose to fame as a child actor in the 1980s in movies like The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Before he appeared in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Quan was best known for playing the role of Harrison Ford's archaeologist and adventurer's sidekick Short Round.

But he largely disappeared from Hollywood after that, at least from acting roles. In his own admission, the roles simply dried up and Hollywood didn't want him anymore But his role as Waymond Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once clearly marked a triumphant return.

As the timid and kind husband of Michelle Yeoh's character, Quan brought warmth and humor to the film, endearing himself to audiences once again. Quan's natural charm and on-screen chemistry with co-star Yeoh were a highlight of the film, and he also shone as the more self-assured alt-universe versions of Waymond. It's safe to say that Quan's future projects are highly anticipated.

Brendan Fraser

Brendan Fraser's return to the spotlight with his performance in The Whale has been nothing short of awe-inspiring. After a string of personal setbacks and a period of absence from the public eye, Fraser's portrayal of Charlie, a man struggling with obesity and emotional trauma, has been widely acclaimed as a tour de force performance.

One of the standout aspects of Fraser's performance is his physical transformation for the role. He gained weight and wore a fat suit to accurately depict the character's obesity, and the makeup and hairstyling team also won an Oscar for their work on the film. However, it was Fraser's emotional and psychological portrayal of Charlie that truly impressed audiences and critics alike. He brought depth and humanity to a character who could have easily become a caricature, and his nuanced performance captured the complexities of Charlie's struggles.

Fraser's comeback has been dubbed the "Brenaissance" by fans and media, and rightly so. The actor's talent and dedication to his craft were on full display in The Whale, and his return to the big screen has been met with widespread enthusiasm.

Oscars 2023: Ke Huy Quan and Brendan Fraser — a tale of two legendary comebacks

Brendan Fraser won an Oscar at the recently concluded Oscars 2023 awards ceremony for his tour de force performance in The Whale. Fraser's work in the Darren Aronofsky directorial was so well-received that critics and fans termed this comeback of the actor 'Brenaissance'. His physical transformation for the role is remarkable (the film also won another Oscar, in the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category), as he gained weight and wore a fat suit to accurately depict the character's obesity. However, his performance was not just limited to his physicality. Fraser masterfully captured Charlie's emotional and psychological struggles, portraying a man who is haunted by his past and tormented by his present.

Oscars 2023: 'Brenaissance' continues for Brendan Fraser as he wins Best Actor Oscar for The Whale

Everything Everywhere All at Once emerged as the big winner of Oscars 2023 with an incredible seven wins out of 11 nominations. Three of the actors in the film were awarded a trophy: Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis. The film also won the big one: Best Picture. A couple of years ago, it would have been unthinkable that an indie movie from a studio like A24 will become the mega-winner in the biggest awards show on the planet. But the Daniels made it a reality with Everything Everywhere All at Once. The film deserved, um, everything it got. It is the best science-fiction movie in ages.

Everything Everywhere All at Once riffs on everything from The Matrix to Ratatouille to Hong Kong martial arts movies, and yet feels fresh and inventive. And insane, bizarre, brilliant, and endlessly clever. The English language will run out of adjectives before this film can be described in a fitting manner.

Yeoh essayed the role of a Chinese immigrant Evelyn Wang, who is a harried owner of a launderette. Her life is the very definition of stress. Her marriage is crumbling, she feels disconnected from her American-born daughter, and she is being harassed by the IRS for not being able to explain her expenses. She’s in a soup, all right.

Yeoh was in almost every frame of the movie, and a good thing too. For she is indescribably good -- portraying the pain, confusion, exhaustion, and other moods with a veteran's ease. Stephanie Hsu, who plays her daughter Joy, also impresses, sporting different, gonzo outfits in nearly every other scene, exhibiting her queerness. Ke Huy Quan is endearing as a timid but kind husband, who, lacking the hand-to-hand combat skills of his alt-universe counterpart, relies on his determination and genial, inoffensive personality to deal with things.

Late-night funnyman Jimmy Kimmel returns to host the Oscars for a third time. His first stint ended with the infamous mix-up that saw La La Land accidentally named best picture in 2017.

Assuming the correct envelopes are handed out this year, here are five other things to watch out for on Hollywood's biggest night:

- Rihanna and 'RRR' but no Gaga -

All five best song nominees are invited to perform live at the Oscars.

That means pop superstar Rihanna will grace the stage, just weeks after her long-awaited Super Bowl halftime show, at which she revealed she is pregnant.

She will sing Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, while Talking Heads frontman David Byrne and Everything Everywhere star Stephanie Hsu will perform This Is A Life.

Perhaps the biggest spectacle will be Naatu Naatu, the infectious showstopper from India's RRR, which has recently had audiences dancing in their seats in Hollywood movie theaters.

Sadly, there will be no Lady Gaga. Nominated for Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick, she is unavailable as she is "in the middle of shooting a movie," Oscars producers say.

Lenny Kravitz will bring further stardust to the gala, performing music to accompany the annual "In Memoriam" tribute.

- Best actress history? -

This closely fought category is likely to buck tradition and break records.

If Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere) beats Cate Blanchett (Tar), she will become the first Asian woman to claim the best actress prize.

Should Blanchett win, she will become just the eighth actor in history to win three Oscars.

Meanwhile, Andrea Riseborough would surely be the most unlikely ever winner, having earned her nomination for obscure indie film To Leslie thanks to a controversial campaign by celebrity pals of the film's cast and crew.

Finally, there is the question of who presents the award.

Traditionally, it is the previous year's best actor winner.

Given Will Smith is serving a decade-long Oscar ban (see below), that doesn't seem very likely.

- Slap chat -

Just as it is impossible to write an Oscars preview this year without mentioning The Slap, expect the ceremony to address the incident.

For those living under a rock, Will Smith assaulted Chris Rock on stage during last year's Oscars for cracking a joke about his wife.

Rock himself got the ball rolling last weekend, joking in a live Netflix special that he recently rooted for the slave master who beats Smith's character in his latest movie Emancipation.

Oscars organizers say the plan is to "acknowledge it" -- presumably in Kimmel's opening monologue -- and then swiftly "move on."

But will the various presenters and winners be able to keep Smith's name out of their mouths?

- Marvel-ous Bassett -

Will Angela Bassett "do the thing?"

Before she became the subject of a viral meme -- courtesy of Ariana DeBose's cringeworthy rap lyrics at the BAFTAs -- Bassett was best known for her enviable acting CV.

With acclaimed films like What's Love Got to Do with It and Boyz n the Hood, to name a few, it is surprising she has never won an Oscar.

It would be even more surprising if her first win came for a superhero movie.

But that appears a likely outcome, after her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever earned the first-ever Oscar acting nomination for a Marvel film.

She will have to see off Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere) and Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin) to pull off the win.

- 'All Quiet' makes noise -

Karl Marx said history repeats itself -- the first time as tragedy, the second as farce.

He probably wasn't talking about the Oscars, but if All Quiet on the Western Front wins best picture, it will be the first film to essentially win Hollywood's biggest prize twice.

The original, English-language screen adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's anti-war novel won top honors way back in 1930, at just the third-ever Oscars.

Should this year's German-language version win, it will be Netflix's first best picture win -- just a year after Apple pipped it to become the first streamer to collect Hollywood's biggest prize.

If there is any film that can stop the Everything Everywhere juggernaut on Sunday, it's probably this one.

Rihanna, RRR and Everything Everywhere All at Once: Five things to watch for at the Oscars

Oscars 2023: final predictions: Who will win the golden trophy - Michelle Yeoh to Angela Bassett

This year's Oscar awards red carpet is not red but champagne in color. Be that as it may, Oscars and red carpets are synonymous. But did you know that there's a centuries-long history to the red carpet? We tell you all about it in this episode of Beyond the Runway.

Red carpet fashion: How did this iconic Oscar style staple start?

The Oscars take place Sunday, with two big questions on everyone's lips: Will anyone get slapped? And can a wacky sci-fi featuring hot dog fingers and butt plugs really win best picture?

While the answer to the first question is likely no -- Academy chiefs have a "crisis team" in place after Will Smith's misadventures last year -- the overwhelming response to the latter seems to be yes.

WION Exclusive: Oscar nominee Guneet Monga on her film The Elephant Whisperer, Indian documentaries and more

Everything Everywhere All at Once, which follows a Chinese immigrant laundromat owner locked in battle with an inter-dimensional supervillain who happens to also be her own daughter, could not be further from your typical Oscar winner.

In a plot almost too bizarre to describe, Michelle Yeoh's heroine Evelyn must harness the power of her alter egos living in parallel universes, which feature hot dogs as human fingers, talking rocks and sex toys used as weapons and trophies.

But the film has dominated nearly every awards show in Hollywood, with its charismatic, predominantly Asian stars -- supported by the ever-popular Jamie Lee Curtis -- becoming the feel-good story of the season.

"It's a group of very likable people behind the movie who it's impossible to not be happy for," Hollywood Reporter awards columnist Scott Feinberg told AFP.

Oscars 2023: Lady Gaga won't perform nominated ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ song

Having won top honors from Hollywood's directors, producers, actors and writers guilds, the film -- a bona fide, word-of-mouth, $100 million-grossing audience hit too -- is expected to dominate Oscars night.

But unlike in other categories, the movie could hit a stumbling block for best picture -- the evening's top prize -- due to the special "preferential" voting system, in which members rank films from best to worst.

The system punishes divisive films, and Feinberg said "many" voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences "just don't get" the madcap appeal of Everything Everywhere.

If any rival can benefit, it is likely All Quiet on the Western Front, Netflix's German-language World War I movie that dominated Britain's BAFTAs.

Another potential beneficiary is Top Gun: Maverick, the long-awaited sequel from Tom Cruise -- no less a figure than Steven Spielberg recently said the actor and his film "might have saved the entire theatrical industry" from the pandemic.

- Toss-ups -

If best picture has a clear favourite, the acting races are incredibly tight.

"I can't remember a year, at least in the time I've been doing it, where three of the four acting categories were true toss-ups," said Feinberg.

In best actress, Cate Blanchett had long been favourite to win a third Oscar for Tar, but Everything Everywhere love could propel Yeoh to a historic first win by an Asian woman in the category.

Best actor is a three-horse race between Austin Butler ( Elvis), Brendan Fraser (The Whale) and Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin).

And supporting actress maybe even closer.

Angela Bassett, the first Marvel superhero actor ever nominated with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is up against Curtis and Banshees star Kerry Condon.

One category does appear to be locked.

Ke Huy Quan, the former child star of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies, has won every best supporting actor prize going and looks near-certain to complete a comeback story for the ages.

- 'The Slap' -

Hanging over the ceremony is the specter of "The Slap" -- the shocking moment at last year's Oscars when Smith assaulted Chris Rock on stage for cracking a joke about his wife.

At a press conference this week, Oscars executive producer Molly McNearney said: "We're going to acknowledge it, and then we're going to move on."

For Feinberg, "the Academy has made it very clear that they don't find it funny and they would rather it not be discussed. But I guess you can't pretend it didn't happen."

Organizers were criticized last year for allowing Smith to remain at the show after the attack, and even collect his best actor award.

He was later banned from Oscars events for a decade, meaning he cannot present the best actress statuette this year, as is traditional.

A "crisis team" has been set up for the first time, to immediately respond to any unexpected developments.

Asked by AFP how this would work should something untoward happen, producer Glenn Weiss said "every major event I've worked on in the last 20 years has some kind of security."

"We've done the Democratic Convention, we've done the inauguration for multiple presidents. We put on the entertainment -- the Secret Service takes care of the other side."

The focus of his team, and host Jimmy Kimmel, is strictly "to keep it entertaining and hopefully keep you guys watching," he said.

- Blockbusters -

Whether people will keep watching is arguably the biggest question of all.

Partly thanks to "The Slap," last year's ratings improved from record lows, but remained well below their late 1990s peak, as interest in awards shows wanes and doomsayers continue to predict the demise of theatergoing.

This year, organizers hope nominations for widely watched blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water will bring viewers back.

"If the public cares about the movies, they care about the Oscars, relatively more," said Feinberg.

The year Titanic won 11 Oscars including best picture, in 1998, recorded the highest ever ratings, with 57 million tuning in.

"That world is gone," said Feinberg. "But if it doesn't go up from last year, then the Academy has a big problem."

Oscars return - with slap jokes and hot dog fingers on menu

The Oscars, considered the highest honour in the world of cinema, are just two days away. On March 12th, the 95th Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatres in Los Angeles, with Jimmy Kimmel as the host of the big evening. The night will be full of A-listers, who will grace the red carpet in their fashion best. Apart from this, we will also see some history-making moments with some celebrities making political statements along with emotional acceptance speeches, without which Academy night is incomplete.

In the 94-year history of the Academy, we have seen a number of memorable speeches, from political to controversial and even emotional ones.

As we gear up for the next Academy Awards night, here we’ve compiled some of the most memorable, controversial, powerful, and shortest speeches delivered by our Oscar winners over the years.

Sacheen Littlefeather - 1973

One of the most controversial moments in Oscar's history. Actor Marlon Bradon rejected his Best Actor award for The Godfather and sent Native American woman Sacheen Littlefeather, who went to the stage to accept the trophy but refused to take the trophy.

She said in her speech: ''Hello. My name is Sacheen Littlefeather. I'm Apache and I am president of the National Native American Affirmative Image Committee. I'm representing Marlon Brando this evening and he has asked me to tell you in a very long speech, which I cannot share with you presently because of time but I will be glad to share with the press afterwards, that he very regretfully cannot accept this very generous award. And the reasons for this being are the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry – excuse me – and on television in movie reruns, and also with recent happenings at Wounded Knee. I beg at this time that I have not intruded upon this evening and that we will in the future, our hearts and our understandings will meet with love and generosity. Thank you on behalf of Marlon Brando.''

Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCrane - 2017

After winning the award for best-adapted screenplay for Moonlight, Barry Jenkins and Terell Alvin McCraney in their acceptance speech dedicated their award to all the people of colour:

“This goes out to all those black and brown boys and girls and non gender-conforming who don’t see themselves, we’re trying to show you you, and us. So thank you, thank you. This is for you,” McCraney said while accepting the award.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon - 1997

In 1997, Ben Affleck become the youngest person ever to win an Oscar for best original screenplay alongside Matt Damon for Good Will Hunting'.

“There’s no way we’re doing this in less than 20 seconds,” he laughed before adding, “I know we’re forgetting somebody,” he concluded before Damon took over with some shouts of love, reminiscent of Cuba Gooding Jr.’s own speech earlier in the evening: “Whoever we forgot, we love you! We love you!”

Halle Berry's most emotional speech

Halle Berry made history by becoming the first Black actress to win the Best actor award in 2002 for 'Monster's Ball. Sobbing in happiness, Berry said, “This moment is so much bigger than me. This moment is for Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll. It’s for the women that stand beside me, Jada Pinkett, Angela Bassett, and Vivica Fox. And it’s for every nameless, faceless woman of colour that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened.''

Lupita Nyong'o dream moment

When Lupita took the stage in the aqua colour gown to accept the biggest trophy of her life and she used the stage to send an empowering message to every child who dreams.

''When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you're from, your dreams are valid," Lupita said while accepting the Best supporting actress for '12 Years a Slave'.

Leonardo Di Caprio's urge for nature

Leonardo DiCaprio took the stage and addressed climate change. Holding the golden trophy in his hands, Caprio said, "Making The Revenant was about man's relationship to the natural world. A world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history. Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow. Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people out there who would be most affected by this. For our children's children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed. I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted."

Viola Davis

Davis gave a powerful speech after she won Best Supporting Actress in 2017 for 'Fences'. "There's one place that all the people with the greatest potential are gathered. One place. And that's the graveyard. People ask me all the time, 'What kind of stories do you want to tell, Viola?' And I say, exhume those bodies. Exhume those stories. The stories of the people who dreamed big and never saw those dreams to fruition. People who fell in love and lost. I became an artist, and thank god I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life. So here's to August Wilson, who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people."

I beg at this time that I have not intruded upon this evening and that we will in the future, our hearts and our understandings will meet with love and generosity. Thank you on behalf of Marlon Brando.'' Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCrane - 2017 After winning the award for best-adapted screenplay for Moonlight, Barry Jenkins and Terell Alvin McCraney in their acceptance speech dedicated their award to all the people of colour: “This goes out to all those black and brown boys and girls and non gender-conforming who don’t see themselves, we’re trying to show you you, and us. So thank you, thank you. This is for you,” McCraney said while accepting the award. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon - 1997 In 1997, Ben Affleck become the youngest person ever to win an Oscar for best original screenplay alongside Matt Damon for Good Will Hunting'. We love you!” Halle Berry's most emotional speech Halle Berry made history by becoming the first Black actress to win the Best actor award in 2002 for 'Monster's Ball. And it’s for every nameless, faceless woman of colour that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened.'' Lupita Nyong'o dream moment When Lupita took the stage in the aqua colour gown to accept the biggest trophy of her life and she used the stage to send an empowering message to every child who dreams. ''When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you're from, your dreams are valid," Lupita said while accepting the Best supporting actress for '12 Years a Slave'. Leonardo Di Caprio's urge for nature Leonardo DiCaprio took the stage and addressed climate change. Let us not take this planet for granted." Viola Davis Davis gave a powerful speech after she won Best Supporting Actress in 2017 for 'Fences'.

The Oscars 2023 ceremony is almost here. Winning an Oscar, formally called the Academy Award, is often seen as the ultimate achievement for actors in the film industry, but despite oodles of talent and skill, not to mention multiple nominations, there are many great actors who have never won an Oscar. There are a variety of reasons for that. First, the voting process is subjective. These awards are voted by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which is made up of actors, directors, producers, and other industry professionals. However, each member has their own personal preferences and biases, which can influence their voting decisions.

Moreover, politics and campaigning can also play a role in deciding the winner. In some cases, an actor's studio or publicist may run an aggressive campaign to secure the win, while other actors may not have the same level of resources or publicity behind them.

Black (2005) This film, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, tells the story of a deaf-blind girl and her relationship with her teacher. It was praised for its poignant storytelling and outstanding performances, particularly by leading actress Rani Mukherjee. Despite being a critical success, it was not nominated for an Oscar. The film explores the issues of farmer suicides, media sensationalism, and political corruption in India. Court (2014) This Marathi-language film, directed by Chaitanya Tamhane, tells the story of a trial in a lower court in Mumbai. It was praised for its sharp social commentary and unique storytelling style and won several awards at international film festivals. Despite critical acclaim, it was not nominated. Also Read: Oscars Awards 2023 Best Picture nominee: Can Avatar 2 win the trophy? Village Rockstars (2017) This Rima Das film is set in a remote village in the northeastern state of Assam and follows the story of a young girl named Dhunu who dreams of owning a guitar and starting her own rock band. The film captures the beauty and struggles of rural life in India with its stunning cinematography and authentic portrayal of the culture, traditions, and daily life of the villagers. It provides a glimpse into a way of life that is often overlooked or misrepresented in mainstream media. Jallikattu (2019) An Indian Malayalam-language action film directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, Jallikattu is based on the short story Maoist by Hareesh and depicts the events that follow after a buffalo escapes from a slaughterhouse in a small village in Kerala, India. It features quite an unconventional narrative structure, and primarily focuses on the reactions of the villagers to the situation rather than the buffalo itself. This approach makes the film more about the people and their emotions than the animal. The story builds up to a gripping climax that is both thrilling and thought-provoking. Oscar Awards 2023, 5 days to go: When and where to watch The Academy Awards in India

I hadn’t seen any film by the Daniels before I set my eyes upon Everything Everywhere All at Once. I resisted the urge to watch it because I am always suspicious of the initial hoopla that surrounds certain movies before they almost inevitably escape popular imagination. But with Everything Everywhere All at Once (EEAAO from now on), the hoopla only increased in volume until everybody was talking about this indie movie that was not indie anymore — in terms of box office numbers, that is. The film stars Michelle Yeoh as a harried Chinese immigrant woman called Evelyn Quran Wang whose overwrought life women in India and I imagine many other places in the world would empathise with. She lives with a fractious teenage daughter Joy Wang (Stephanie Hsu), and a meek husband Waymond Wang (Ke Huy Quan).

Eleven Oscar nominations!

Everything Everywhere All at Once has 11 nominations, including the major categories like Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. The film will likely not do a Return of the King — the conclusion to Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy that clinched 11 trophies out of 11 nominations at the 76th Academy Awards. But if it wins in either of the three major categories, and it might likely win in two, it will end up with at least four or five trophies — not bad for a supposedly indie movie.

What made Everything Everywhere All at Once so special?

Yeoh’s casting in EEAAO was both inspired and ridiculous, I thought. Inspired because, well, she has been a fantastic performer for decades now. And absurd because despite her drab clothing, she nevertheless managed to look luminous and did not really fit in with this working-class-unfashionable-woman part. It did, however, fit with the film’s increasingly absurdist tone.

Evelyn runs a laundrette and is in trouble with the IRS. Her daughter wants her to accept her girlfriend who Evelyn refuses to see as anything but her friend. Her husband is trying to serve divorce papers to her, a preemptive attack before she can do that. And her formidable father (James Hong), against whose wishes she eloped with Waymond and came to America, is coming to visit her for the Lunar Year Party. Oh, and she has to regularly visit the IRS office and face the dead-eyed gaze of inspector Deirdre Beaubeirdre (a brilliantly bureaucratic Jamie Lee Curtis).

In short, Evelyn’s life, it would seem, could not get any crazier. But it does. She is told by an alt-universe version of her husband, who possesses her universe’s Waymond using advanced technology from his universe, and tells her that her universe is just one among an infinite number of parallel universes, and that every life choice, no matter how small, creates a new reality, diverting the course of events significantly.

The multiverse, says alt-Waymond, is in peril because of an evil entity called Jobu Tupaki, and Evelyn is the last hope of all living beings on earth. For Tupaki experiences every reality all at once, can manipulate matter, and has plans to erase every reality from existence.

At this point, you would think the film will turn into a race against time to save the multiverse from the supervillain. It is what most movies of this kind do, after all. But no. EEAAO is a lot smarter than that. It riffs on everything from The Matrix to Ratatouille to Hong Kong martial arts movies, and remains endlessly fresh and inventive. It embraces the gloriously bonkers side of the multiverse, exploring horizons most films delving into similar ideas can barely touch. The two hour and twenty minutes of screen time, which would usually be intimidating, zips past.

Michelle Yeoh gives a superb performance

Yeoh is in almost every frame of the movie, and a good thing too. For she is indescribably good — portraying the pain, confusion, exhaustion, and other moods with a veteran's ease. Stephanie Hsu, who plays her daughter Joy, also impresses, sporting different, gonzo outfits in nearly every other scene to exhibit her queerness. Ke Huy Quan is endearing as a timid but kind husband, who, lacking the hand-to-hand combat skills of his alt-universe counterpart, relies on his determination and genial, inoffensive personality to disarm people and get things done. This is the mother of all comebacks.

The themes, admittedly, are somewhat simplistic: generational divide, family values, acceptance, and nihilism. Nothing you have not seen before. But you would be an odd person if you actually pause to examine the thematic depth of this wonderful film. Oscars 2023 Best Picture: Why Everything Everywhere All at Once should win

Surprising everyone except those who have closely followed the career of James Cameron, Avatar: The Way of Water broke pretty much every box office record. The director once again proved that he is not, not ever, to be underestimated. The film started off just fine, numbers-wise, but its December release meant it was consistent and had long legs. It was more of a tortoise, but once as fast as a hare. At the time of writing this, it has grossed $2.26 billion, and has become the third-highest-grossing movie of all time in terms of worldwide box office figures. A sequel to 2009's Avatar, The Way of Water continued the story of the Sully family and pitted them against an old enemy in new, er, Avatar.

Four Oscar nominations

In the Oscars 2023, Avatar: The Way of Water has scored four nominations, including the Best Picture category. Other nominations are technical, and include Best Sound, Best Production Design, and Best Visual Effects. Let's talk about the Best Picture possibility of the Cameron movie.

Is Avatar: The Way of Water a great movie?

It kind of is. Cameron is one of the finest, if a little temperamental, makers of blockbusters around today. Few, if any, can match up to his ability to craft exciting action and stunning and imaginative visuals. With the Avatar franchise, he ventured into conceptualising and creating an entirely new alien world (or moon, if you are being pedantic) with its own flora, fauna, ecology, atmosphere, and so on. Not only everything was rendered in mind-boggling detail, despite all the bright colours and fantasy-like feel, it was authentic — after a fashion. It really did seem as though Pandora exists somewhere in the outer reaches of the galaxy (okay, it is meant to exist in the Alpha Centauri System, which is actually the closest star system to our solar system).

The Way of Water was only better. Everything was more lifelike, more detailed, and prettier. A lot of the film was set underwater, and Cameron once again showed mastery over envisaging fictitious and yet somehow tangibly real life forms.

It will take your breath away. Everything is gorgeous in a cinematic, dynamic way. It sounds weird when I say this, but despite being so beautiful, the film managed to be subtle. The visual elements seamlessly blended into one other, and the film encouraged one to forget everything one is looking at was created in computers. In a few shots, particularly in the water, it is certain Cameron was showing off. And indeed my jaw was hanging slack, wondering how in the world he did it.

Will Avatar: The Way of Water win the Best Picture Oscar?

That is the big question. My guess is no. Sure, the Academy might pull off a surprise, and not every movie that gets an Oscar is deserving or indeed worth watching. But it is likely that The Way of Water will not win an Oscar. The reason is, with all its splendour and eye candy, The Way of Water's story is strictly serviceable. The director has never been an impressive deviser of complex, gripping plots and characters beyond surface level. He does have the uncanny ability to build exciting narratives around action set pieces, and The Way of Water is no exception. The Way of Water is, in effect, a typical Cameron movie with all its glories and downfalls. It all comes across as something we have seen before, and done much better.

Even the themes are pretty much the same, as sweeping and simplistic as before. Just like Avatar, none too delicately, hammered home the point that we should protect our forests, The Way of Water brings our attention to the oceans. New creatures in the film include over-friendly whale-like mammals called tulkun, and naturally, there are whalers extracting from their blubber the Pandora equivalent of whale oil, Amrita. Similar to the nectar in Hindu mythology that is supposed to make its consumer immortal, Amrita stops aging.

Yes, the natural world and the equilibrium in fragile ecosystems are worth preserving. And yes, many indigenous populations have a strong connection to the flora and fauna in the regions they inhabit. Oh, and technology can often be dangerous. But we knew that already, Cameron. Say something new!

I jest, but only a little. The Way of Water is certainly worth watching once in the theatre in 3D. It is, I would say, a quintessential movie-viewing experience, and will wow you with its beauty. And yet, once you get out of it, the simplistic story rears its ugly head.

Four Oscar nominations In the Oscars 2023, Avatar: The Way of Water has scored four nominations, including the Best Picture category.
It’s almost going to be a year for Chris Rock and Will Smith’s slap gate, where the latter hit the comedian for making fun of his wife on the Oscars stage. The Academy Awards are back this year and people are expecting some drama to unfold over the slap gate scandal. Serving it up for his fans, Chris Rock will hit back on stage with a live standup special on Netflix. This will air on the OTT platform on March 4. He will address the set of events that unfolded between him and Will Smith post the incident.

This is not the first time that Chris will speak on the matter. He has, previously, spoken about it in his stand-up performances but never in such detail.

Reports suggest that Chris Rock worked on the Netflix special in January and that he gave his audiences a hint of it during an arena show in Charlestown where he shared the stage with Dave Chappelle. Back then, he addressed the now-infamous moment with Will Smith. He also cracked some jokes about the collective outrage after the incident happened.

“The thing people wanna know … did it hurt? Hell yeah, it hurt. He played Muhammad Ali! I played Pookie (in ‘New Jack City’). Even in animated movies, I’m a zebra, he’s a f—ing shark. I got hit so hard, I heard ‘Summertime’ ringing in my ears,” Rock joked in the Charlestown set.

Will Smith changed the mood of the 2022 Oscars when he hit the presenter on stage while presenting the award for best documentary feature.
