Space capability plays a major role in contemporary warfare. The recent conflict between India and Pakistan is yet another reminder of how India's space program supports the military's warfighting capabilities. Be it air, land, or the sea, all theaters of warfare were influenced and enhanced by space capabilities at all times.

Operation Sindoor: ISRO chief offer insights into role of satellites in operation

In a blazing display of military prowess, India&rsquo;s Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MR-SAM), codenamed Barak 8 or 'Abhra,' decimated Pakistan&rsquo;s desperate aerial counteroffensive during Operation Sindoor on May 8, 2025.
This indigenously developed air defence juggernaut, forged through a fiery collaboration between India&rsquo;s DRDO and Israel&rsquo;s IAI, proved its mettle by shredding over 50 Pakistani drones and missiles, safeguarding Indian skies and cementing India&rsquo;s dominance in the face of terrorism.
Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, 2025, to pulverise nine terrorist strongholds in Pakistan and PoK in retaliation for the heinous Pahalgam attack, showcased not just India&rsquo;s offensive might but the impregnable shield of the MR-SAM.
<h2>MR-SAM: The annihilator of Pakistan&rsquo;s aerial ambitions</h2>
When Pakistan unleashed a swarm of 300&ndash;400 drones targeting Indian military bases and cities like Srinagar, Jammu, and Bathinda, the MR-SAM stood as an unyielding sentinel. Its 70 km range and vertical launch capability obliterated threats from every angle, neutralising drones in Udhampur, Samba, Akhnoor, and Pathankot with surgical precision.
Armed with advanced radar and active homing, the system tore through Pakistan&rsquo;s barrage, ensuring no missile or drone breached India&rsquo;s defences. This wasn&rsquo;t just defence, it was a statement: India&rsquo;s airspace is inviolable.
<h2>Synergy of destruction: MR-SAM&rsquo;s role in India&rsquo;s Air Defence grid</h2>
The MR-SAM didn&rsquo;t fight alone. Integrated with the S-400 Triumf and Akash systems in India&rsquo;s Counter-UAS Grid, it formed a layered fortress that Pakistan&rsquo;s drones couldn&rsquo;t penetrate.
While the S-400 guarded the skies at long range and Akash tackled closer threats, the MR-SAM&rsquo;s rapid response and multi-target engagement crushed the enemy&rsquo;s swarm tactics. From protecting Srinagar airport to thwarting attacks on Bathinda&rsquo;s military station, the system ensured Pakistan&rsquo;s retaliation fizzled into futility.
<h2>Strategic smackdown: How MR-SAM shaped Operation Sindoor</h2>
Operation Sindoor wasn&rsquo;t just about demolishing terrorist camps&mdash;it was about asserting India&rsquo;s sovereignty. The MR-SAM&rsquo;s defensive dominance allowed Indian forces to execute precision strikes without distraction, maintaining a &ldquo;focused, non-escalatory&rdquo; posture that avoided Pakistani military targets. By neutralising threats in civilian areas like Ferozepur, where injuries were minimised, the system underscored India&rsquo;s commitment to precision and restraint, even as it delivered justice for the 26 lives lost in Pahalgam.
<h2>Indigenous fury: A symbol of India&rsquo;s unstoppable rise</h2>
The MR-SAM, a product of India&rsquo;s DRDO, isn&rsquo;t just a weapon, it&rsquo;s a testament to India&rsquo;s technological ascendancy. Its flawless performance in Operation Sindoor silenced doubters and electrified the nation, with leaders across the spectrum hailing the armed forces&rsquo; resolve.
This wasn&rsquo;t just a victory over Pakistan&rsquo;s drones; it was a triumph of Indian innovation, proving that India can build world-class systems to crush its enemies.
<h2>Global shockwaves: MR-SAM&rsquo;s diplomatic and deterrent impact</h2>
The MR-SAM&rsquo;s success reverberated beyond the battlefield. By thwarting Pakistan&rsquo;s aggression, it bolstered India&rsquo;s diplomatic stance, earning nods from global powers like the US, UK, and Russia. The system&rsquo;s ability to prevent escalation while protecting Indian assets showcased a mature, formidable military power. Pakistan, humiliated by its failed counterattack, now faces the stark reality of India&rsquo;s defensive superiority&mdash;a deterrent that will echo for years.
<h2>Technical Terror: What makes MR-SAM unstoppable</h2>
Range and Reach: A 70 km radius of destruction, capable of annihilating drones, missiles, and aircraft at any altitude.
Radar Supremacy: Multi-function radar tracks multiple targets, ensuring no threat escapes its wrath.
Lightning Reflexes: Vertical launch and rapid reaction time make it a nightmare for surprise attacks.
Seamless Synergy: Integration with India&rsquo;s air defence network creates an impenetrable shield.
<h2>Conclusion: A roaring victory for India</h2>
The MR-SAM didn&rsquo;t just defend India during Operation Sindoor, it redefined the battlefield. By annihilating Pakistan&rsquo;s drone swarm, protecting lives, and enabling a flawless offensive, it proved that India&rsquo;s enemies will face an unrelenting force. This Indigenous titan, born of Indian ingenuity, has etched its name in history as the guardian of a nation&rsquo;s honour. Operation Sindoor wasn&rsquo;t just a response to terrorism,&nbsp; it was a declaration that India, armed with the MR-SAM, is an unstoppable force.

India's senior military officers addressed a special briefing on <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/operation-sindoor">Operation Sindoor</a> on Monday (May 12), and gave a quirky answer to a question related to Pakistan's nuclear base in Kirana Hills, the topic which created a buzz on social media in the past days.&nbsp;
During the briefing, one of the reporters asked, "Social media and Twitter is abuzz with the fact that we hit a site called Kirana Hills which is supposed to be a nuclear storage facility...Is there a confirmation that we hit Kirana Hills?"&nbsp;
To this, Air Marshal AK Bharti gave a quirky reply, saying that he didn't know that Kirana Hills houses some nuclear installations. He further rejected the buzz of hitting Kirana Hills.&nbsp;

The BrahMos missile is among the most crucial conventional missiles in India's possession. Having a range of nearly 4500 kilometres, Brahmos can carry warheads of 200 to 300 kilograms. Extended range of variants up to 800 km have been reportedly tested. From S-400 to BrahMos missile base: India EXPOSES Pakistan’s misinformation campaign after announcing ceasefire The Brahmos missile can fly at a speed of 2.8 Mach, thrice the speed of sound. Working on the “fire and forget” principle, Brahmos has an advanced guidance system and employs stealth technology that enables it to evade interceptors and trackers. Compared to existing subsonic cruise missiles, BrahMos has 2.5 to three times more flight range, up to four times more seeker range, and nine times more kinetic energy. Brahmos can be launched from air, land, sea, and submarines.

The Rafale is a twin-engine, 4.5-generation "omni-role" fighter capable of executing multiple missions in a single sortie. Its design incorporates a delta wing with close-coupled canards, providing exceptional agility and manoeuvrability. The aircraft boasts a top speed of Mach 1.8 and a service ceiling of 50,000 feet. In contrast, the JF-17 is a single-engine, lightweight fighter with a top speed of Mach 1.6 and a service ceiling of approximately 54,000 feet. While the JF-17's ceiling is slightly higher, the Rafale's superior thrust-to-weight ratio and aerodynamic design offer better performance in dogfight scenarios.

<h3>Operation Sindoor</h3>
India has been clear on it's stance as it launched Operation Sindoor in retaliation to the dastardly attack in Kashmir's Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, "It was deemed essential that the perpetrators and planners of the 22 April attack be brought to justice. Despite a fortnight having passed since the attacks, there has been no demonstrable step from Pakistan to take action against the terror infrastructure on its territory or territory under its control."
He added, "Instead, all it has indulged in denials and allegations. Our intelligence monitoring of Pakistan-based terrorist modules indicated that further attacks against India were impending. Thus, there was a compulsion both to deter and to preempt."
A fortnight later, India continues to mourn the death of innocent tourists, who we brutally killed in front of their loved ones. The images have numbed the country and they were angered by the dastardly attack. After the Mumbai terror attack in November 2008, this one shook the nation.

'Justice is served': Story of the post that announced India's Operation Sindoor to the world | 'Credit goes to...'

As India-Pakistan cross-border tensions were rising, the nation was waiting for briefings to stay abreast of the development. With Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Colonel Sofia Qureshi, it was Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, whose words comforted many in India.
<h3>Why is Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri receiving hate?</h3>
Those living in border states lived through with blackouts, heard explosions, and air raid sirens, it was the news on ceasefire that let them breathe a sigh of relief. The announcement of ceasefire was made by Misri and since then, it was unfortunate that he had to face online trolls.
Many who were comfortably cushioned in their homes were promoting war; it won't be wrong to call it warmongering. While the larger segment of the country was happy with the plan to de-escalate. Those who lived the nightmare know the pain of war; those who lost loved ones know the cost of war.

But those with nothing at stake wanted the cross-border firing to go on longer.&nbsp;
As those charged negatively took no time to troll Misri, nor was his family spared. As things began getting out of hand, Misri found it appropriate to protect his tweets from public viewing. During these times, many stood strong with the foreign secretary and supported him unconditionally.

While the Pakistani side's briefing was filled with the sentiment that they won the war they waged. India is clear that it retaliated to the dastardly terror attack on tourists, which was orchestrated by terrorists who have links with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which operates from Muridke, a location targeted by Indian forces.
The launching of Operation Sindoor was a 'compulsion both to deter and to preempt' Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. The operation was in retaliation to the dastardly attack that killed 26 innocent tourists on April 22.
Misri in one of the initial briefing after launching Operation Sindoor sais, "It was deemed essential that the perpetrators and planners of the 22 April attack be brought to justice.

Why is Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri getting hate online?

Indo-Pak tensions - Pakistanis, Chinese used TikTok as propaganda tool: Many Pakistanis and some Chinese users have turned the Chinese-owned TikTok into a propaganda tool and misinformation campaign platform during the Indo-Pak tensions before, during and after the Pahalgam terror attacks and Operation Sindoor military operations by India. It has emerged that there are two main ways in which the Chinese-owned short video sharing platform was used: for disseminating misinformation about India, and for exhorting people to join terror organisations like Lashkar-e-Taiba.

<h2>TikTok: A terror recruiting tool?</h2>
While TikTok is not present in India, it is widely used in Pakistan. Those who can access it would see how blatantly terrorist organisations and/or their sympathisers are using it to spread Jihadist propaganda and to recruit youngsters. A Sky News investigation has found that TikTok videos were being used in areas including Murdike, where youngsters were being trained by Lashkar-e-Taiba inside what appeared to be mosques and madrassas , the Islamic seminaries. Muridke is one of the nine terror launchpads hit by India in Operation Sindoor, on May 9.
<h2>What do the terrorist videos show?</h2>
The video descriptions clearly mentioned Lashkar-e-Taiba, the terror group behind the Pahalgam attack of April 22 that led to India's Operation Sindoor. The descriptions also contained words like 313, which is code for Jihad. The videos showed children training in swordsplay, and LeT operatives roaming around with guns on their shoulders.&nbsp;
<h2> Terrorists among people is the norm in Pakistan </h2>
If one goes by the videos, it is a daily normal life for these terror launchpads attacked by India to see LeT or other terror group fighters and trainees roaming around or training.

There appears to be no censorship on TikTok in Pakistan, even as it is very clear that the videos are aimed at econouraging more people to join and fund terror groups like LeT to carry out more attacks against India.&nbsp;&nbsp;
<h2>Chinese TikTokers : The online 'wolf warriors' of anti-India venom </h2>
A parallel, disturbing trend was seen during the India-Pakistan tensions in the wake of Operation Sindoor. It is not a secret that several Tiktokers and 'influencers' have been used by the Chinese government as its secret progapanda warriors.
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/indian-navy-was-all-set-to-hit-karachi-kept-pakistani-ships-bound-to-harbour-9058414">Indian Navy was all set to hit Karachi, kept Pakistani ships bound to harbour</a>
During the Operation Sindoor, there were some Chinese TikTokers, including some who appeared to speak American English, giving out 'news' the conflict. Many of them appeared to amplify Pakistani propaganda and fake news, like Pakistani armed forces downed several Indian planes, and detaining piolots. Pakistan has later confirmed that no Indian pilot has been taken in custody by it.
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/pakistan/india-pak-news-pakistan-confirms-no-indian-pilot-in-custody-says-social-media-claims-fake-operation-sindoor-indo-pak-war-india-pakistan-war-shivani-singh-9059281">India-Pak news: Pakistan confirms 'no Indian pilot in custody,' says social media claims 'fake'</a>

The videos include videogame footage dressed up as Pakistani jets downing Indian fighter planes, western-looking tiktokers saying Pakistan is a great place to live, and mock re-enactments of terror attacks against India by some 'funny' tiktokers.
<h2>Why is TikTok banned in India?</h2>
 In the middle of India-China tensions across the border, New Delhi banned TikTok in India in June 2020. The government cited national security concerns and data privacy violations as the reasons. The main concern was that the app might be allowing Chinese government to access Indian user data for surveillance on Indians or for spying on them.

There was fear that TikTok is stealing Indian user data and transmitting the same to the Chinese government. The main reason behind this concern was that TikTok servers were located in China.

Operation Sindoor | India reveals names of Pak military officials who attended funeral of terrorists with Masood Azhar

The Indian Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) on Sunday (May 11) addressed a press conference and briefed the country on Operation Sindoor and the ceasefire understanding with Pakistan. From giving a detailed picture of how India hit terror targets in Pakistan to exposing Pakistan's false claims and its drone attacks on Indian civilians and military posts, the DGMOs set the record straight and also issued a big warning to the neighbouring country if in case it violates the ceasefire again.

The recent events that unfolded following the dastardly Pahalgam terror attack sponsored by Pakistan, tested India's resolve, strategic maturity, and military acumen in the face of relentless provocation. Operation Sindoor, was a multidomain, multi-phased response to a provocation that could have easily spiralled into a prolonged conflict. Yet, India managed to strike a balance between delivering a strong punitive message and avoiding the trap of endless escalation by timely conflict termination and exit strategy. This opinion piece attempts to dissect the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, India&rsquo;s strategic choices, and the broader implications on regional stability and India&rsquo;s global standing.
<h3>The Pahalgam Attack: Spark that Lit the Fuse</h3>
The Pahalgam terror attack was not an isolated incident&mdash;it was a cold-blooded provocation designed to challenge India&rsquo;s security apparatus and undermine the peace and prosperity in Kashmir, besides an attempt to brew communal disharmony. Linkages to Pakistan-based terror outfits were quickly established. Intelligence inputs suggested direct involvement of operatives nurtured within terror hubs in Pakistan&rsquo;s Punjab province. This act of aggression was not just a local security threat&mdash;it was a strategic message from Pakistan&rsquo;s deep state, timed and executed to provoke a reaction.
<h3>Operation Sindoor: Kinetic and Non-Kinetic Recalibration</h3>
India&rsquo;s response was swift, layered, and nuanced. Operation Sindoor began with precision strikes on nine identified and significant terror camps deep inside Pakistani territory. These strikes were surgical in both impact and intent, with no collateral damages. India targeted the terror camps in heartland of Pakistan&rsquo;s Punjab along with Pakistan occupied Kashmir. The message was loud and clear: the cost of sponsoring terrorism had escalated dramatically.
Simultaneously, India launched non-kinetic measures that targeted Pakistan's economic vulnerabilities. Holding in abeyance the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), India initiated moves to reconfigure water flows to maximize usage on its side, holding back hydrological data&mdash;a symbolic and practical step signalling a hardening stance. Diplomatic offensives at international forums were ramped up, highlighting Pakistan&rsquo;s continued use of terrorism as state policy. Efforts were also made to increase the economic cost by shutting down trade and communication system and sociological cost through revoking visas.&nbsp;
<h3>Intent, Messaging, and Strategic Communication</h3>
India&rsquo;s objective was not just retributive justice; it was strategic deterrence. By executing punitive retaliatory strikes against well-defended terror infrastructure and military installations, including demonstrative damages to Pakistani air defences and airfields, India demonstrated a reduced threshold for tolerance. The timing of the operations, and the deception of mock drill announcements, helped retain the element of surprise&mdash;albeit at the cost of few civilian casualties on both sides due to cross-border firing on Line of Control, initiated by Pakistan. This was a calculated risk, reflective of a nation determined not to be seen as reactive or defensive.
More importantly, India managed to climb and control the escalatory ladder. The strategic restraint displayed in the aftermath of initial successes ensured that the conflict did not spiral into an all-out war. Unlike Ukraine or Gaza, India maintained a firm grip over the scope and intensity of its operations&mdash;demonstrating political maturity and military finesse.
<h3>Pakistan's Playbook: Old Tactics, New Gimmicks</h3>
In predictable fashion, Pakistan military retaliated with drone and missile strikes, attempting to create a perception of parity to its domestic fraternity, restore its reputational damage and shattered morale of terrorists. However, these efforts were effectively neutralized by India&rsquo;s credible, multi-layered, integrated air defence systems, operated by extremely &nbsp;professional Indian military. While some damage was reported in Indian border villages, all critical infrastructure remained unharmed&mdash;a testament to India's preparedness.
Pakistan also leaned heavily on its traditional playbook: nuclear sabre-rattling, international mediation, and backdoor diplomacy. Reports suggested frantic efforts by Islamabad to garner attention from global powers, invoking the nuclear threat to appeal for a ceasefire. Drone attacks near sensitive Indian installations were likely attempts to provoke a disproportionate response, thereby shifting the narrative. But India did not bite the bait. Instead, it used calibrated, high-impact, effect based strikes on military targets for punitive deterrence, avoiding civilian areas &nbsp;to retain moral high ground.
<h3>The Global Stage: Ceasefire and the Role of Mediation</h3>
The United States, concerned about the growing volatility in a nuclear flashpoint, stepped in with backchannel diplomacy. The ceasefire announced on 10 May 2025 came after intense shuttle diplomacy involving Washington, Riyadh, and other global stakeholders, forcing Pakistan to request for ceasefire through its DGMO to Indian counterpart on 10 May 2025. India, after having met its strategic objectives, accepted the ceasefire, demonstrating pragmatic approach to conflict termination as part of successful exit strategy.&nbsp;
China&rsquo;s reaction was lukewarm and predictable. While calling for restraint, Beijing avoided openly criticizing Pakistan, its &ldquo;iron brother.&rdquo; However, there was visible discomfort in Chinese media over India&rsquo;s assertiveness and its growing defence interoperability with Western powers and poor performance of Chinese equipment. In this dynamic, India emerged not just as a regional power asserting itself, but also as a responsible global player capable of managing conflict escalation.
<h3>Has India Achieved Its Stated Aim?</h3>
To answer this, we must revisit the core aim of Operation Sindoor. If the objective was to destroy terror hubs, expose Pakistan&rsquo;s military vulnerabilities, demonstrate Indian operational reach in its heartland, punitive destructive power and send a signal of deterrence, then the mission was a success.
India struck where it mattered, in a fashion that left no ambiguity about its intent. No major Indian city, airfield, or critical infrastructure was damaged&mdash;despite Pakistan&rsquo;s belligerence. The pain was localized, necessary, and not in vain. Importantly, India avoided the pitfall of being drawn into a prolonged war (like Ukraine, Afghanistan or Gaza) that could have drained its economy and diverted focus from its developmental priorities. By keeping the conflict short, sharp, and strategically contained, India protected its upward trajectory in the global pecking order. Lessons Learnt&nbsp;
Every conflict carries within it the seeds of future preparedness. Operation Sindoor highlighted the urgent need for enhanced capacity in drone warfare. India must accelerate its investment in indigenous drone swarms, low cost counter drone swarm systems and technologies, AI-enabled target acquisition, and next-gen air defence systems.&nbsp; On the internal security front, the attack in Pahalgam exposed the need for deeper community-based intelligence networks and inter-agency coordination. A prompt punitive action on collaborators and sleeper cells is needed with higher conviction rate. &nbsp;The police, paramilitary, and intelligence community must move toward integrated threat monitoring platforms. The border population, often the first victims of cross-border firing, must be provided with more bunkers, evacuation facilities and assured compensation mechanisms.
<h3>Information Warriors and National Narratives</h3>
One of the enduring challenges has been the internal narrative. While Pakistan pushes its &ldquo;notion of victory&rdquo; through its propaganda machinery, many within India unintentionally amplify these messages. This must change. It is time Indians become &ldquo;information warriors&rdquo; for their own country&mdash;asserting our narrative, celebrating our strategic wins, and countering misinformation.
Simultaneously, there is a pressing need to build robust narrative-shaping capabilities and strategies. Strategic communication&mdash;internal and external&mdash;will be key to future conflicts. A ceasefire declaration immediately after DGMO talk could have given the clear message of it being an Indian strategic choice, avoiding the confusion caused by early tweets of US authorities indicating it to be compulsive US oriented choice. With one of the largest and vibrant media infrastructure, India can shape global narrative better, provided it has offensive information warfare strategy in place and disseminated to all information warriors.&nbsp;
<h3>The Ceasefire: A Tactical Pause, Not an Endgame</h3>
India&rsquo;s decision to accept the ceasefire was not a sign of weakness but a strategic pragmatism. It allowed India to consolidate gains, avoid economic disruption, and signal maturity. However, New Delhi has made it clear that non-kinetic measures&mdash;economic, diplomatic, and technological&mdash;will remain in place. These levers of influence will continue to exert pressure on Pakistan and keep its military establishment on the defensive. The ceasefire should be seen as a tactical pause, not the end of conflict. Pakistan&rsquo;s history suggests it may regroup and retaliate through asymmetric means. India must therefore maintain a high state of alert and continue capacity building across all domains.
<h3>Conclusion and Road Ahead</h3>
The strikes achieved their intended effect, and India emerged with credibility, resilience, and strength. Any suggestion otherwise only serves enemy objectives. Unity in messaging is not jingoism&mdash;it is national interest. The Pahalgam attack was a test of India&rsquo;s national resolve, and Operation SINDOOR was its resounding answer. India acted with strength, restraint, and strategy&mdash;achieving its aims while avoiding the trap of escalation. As the dust settles on this chapter, the lessons are clear: remain prepared, build capacity, and control the narrative. The road ahead is long, but India has proven that it will not be bullied, and it will not be baited.
