India’s military drones include imports and local development

India's drone capacity building accelerated in recent years, particularly with a focus on China, in the context of recent border standoffs along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Local development through projects like Ghatak seek to counter China's growth in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) tech.
During Operation Sindoor, it became evident that Pakistan has been amassing drones over these years, which it used unsuccessfully in swarm operations after India's May 7 offensive. India thwarted Pakistan’s Turkish and Chinese drones, which it had been using for years for infiltration, surveillance and strikes against India.

For drone development and manufacturing, the focus is on Make in India. indigenous efforts are led by Defence Research and Development Organisation or DRDO, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited or HAL, and private players.
DRDO and HAL have entered into public-privatership programmes with companies like EEL, IdeaForge, and Adani Defence.

India's drone warfare: How are military drones used?

Indian military uses drones for surveillance and reconnaissance, precision strikes, swarm operations and providing logistics. Drones like Heron, Drishti 10, and Tapas do surveillance and reconnaissance in border areas. Nagastra-1 and Harop drones can carry out targeted strikes, as proven in Operation Sindoor. Swarm drones can overwhelm the enemy defences and hit its critical infrastructure. Some drones support cargo delivery to high-altitude areas.
India has also developed effective counter-drone operations. During Operation Sindoor, the counter-drone system 'Bhargavastra' and DRDO’s anti-drone technology were used to defend Indian airspace from Pakistani drones.

India's imported drones

While estimates vary, India is thought to possess up to 2,500 drones according to reports. India's imported drones are mainly from Israel and the US. Israeli and US drones have been imported by India over the years, particularly since 1999 Kargil War.
The Heron Series - Heron I and Heron Mk II - are medium-altitude long-endurance or MALE drones, which Inda uses for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance or ISR. Heron drones are at work along border with China. Searcher Mk II is used for surveillance and reconnaissance by the Indian forces. Harop drones are "kamikaze" or suicide drones that can conduct precision strikes, and were reportedly used during Operation Sindoor.
Hermes 900 and 450 drones, made in India in a joint venture with Israel, are another MALE drone. A varient of Hermes 900, Drishti 10 Starliner, has 70 per cent indigenous components.

Operation Sindoor proved Indian drones' lethal power, locally made military drones will soon make India a 'drone-Aachaarya'

India has taken a giant leap in modern warfare with Bhargavastra, a homegrown, low-cost counter-drone system developed by Economic Explosives Ltd (EEL), a subsidiary of Solar Group. Successfully tested on May 13, 2025 at Gopalpur’s Seaward Firing Range, this state-of-the-art weapon neutralised drone swarms with precision. Alongside India’s strategic deployment of drones during Operation Sindoor launched in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Bhargavastra has positioned India as a global leader in drone warfare.
This twin approach—combining drone strikes with anti-drone defence—has reshaped India’s battlefield readiness, enhancing both offensive and defensive capabilities.

Bhargavastra: India’s Drone-Killing Shield

Bhargavastra acts like an eagle, spotting and eliminating hostile drones before they strike. It has a two-tier kill mechanism:
First Layer: Fires unguided micro-rockets with a 20-metre blast radius, designed to wipe out drone clusters swiftly.
Second Layer: Launches precision-guided micro-missiles to destroy high-value or evasive aerial targets with surgical accuracy.
What makes Bhargavastra unique is its versatility. It can be upgraded with “soft-kill” features—such as jamming and spoofing—to confuse enemy drones. Its adaptability allows deployment by the Army, Navy, and Air Force, from desert terrain to high-altitude regions like Ladakh, operating efficiently even at altitudes above 5,000 metres.
During its successful trials, supervised by Army Air Defence officials, Bhargavastra executed both single and salvo-mode launches—firing two rockets in just two seconds. All tests met performance targets with direct hits.

Proudly Made in India

Every component—sensors, launchers, and control systems—is developed in India. Equipped with advanced radar, electro-optical cameras, and RF receivers, Bhargavastra detects small and incoming drones up to 2.5 km away and identifies threats using radar detection up to 6 km, with enhanced tracking through optical and RF systems.
At the heart of the system lies a C4I-powered Command-and-Control Centre (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence), ensuring seamless coordination. It fits perfectly into India’s network-centric warfare model, boosting situational awareness and rapid response.

Drones in Operation Sindoor: A New Era of Warfare

Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, was India’s bold retaliation to the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 civilians. The tri-service mission saw the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy strike nine terror hubs across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
For the first time, drones played a central role. India deployed SkyStriker kamikaze drones—co-developed by Adani Group’s Alpha Design Technologies and Israel’s Elbit Systems—to surgically hit targets. These Bengaluru-made drones, with a 100 km range and 5–10 kg warheads, demonstrated precision and cost-effectiveness.
Pakistan’s response was a massive drone swarm—nearly 400 drones, including Turkish-made SONGAR variants—targeting 26 locations across India, from Leh to Sir Creek. These attacks hit military bases and civilian zones, injuring people in Punjab’s Ferozepur. However, India’s layered air defence—including Bhargavastra—intercepted over 600 aerial threats within six days.
India also deployed high-energy lasers and its own drones to destroy enemy swarms, marking a shift from conventional to high-tech warfare.

A Technological Turning Point

India’s LMS kamikaze drones—developed with DRDO—used thermal imaging, AI navigation, and NTRO-supplied real-time data to hit targets without collateral damage. Over 100 terrorists were neutralised in the nine strikes.
These capabilities show that drones are not just surveillance tools—they are decisive military assets. Bhargavastra addresses this threat affordably and efficiently, making India the first country to field such a flexible, indigenous counter-swarm solution.

Setting a Global Benchmark

India’s performance in Operation Sindoor—striking terror camps with drones and blocking enemy swarms—showcases a balanced military posture. Social media buzzed with praise for Bhargavastra, calling it a “nightmare” for Turkish and Chinese drones. Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed Operation Sindoor the “new normal” in India’s counter-terrorism doctrine.
A Symbol of Atmanirbharta (Self-Reliance)
Bhargavastra is not just a defence system; it’s a symbol of Indian ingenuity. With EEL, DRDO, and Adani Group working in tandem, India has built a robust and scalable solution to modern aerial threats.
As drone warfare redefines battlefields globally, from Ukraine to Gaza, India stands at the forefront with Bhargavastra. This is not just a technological triumph—it’s a national milestone.
India’s future battles won’t just be fought with guns and tanks—but with brains, bytes, and brilliant homegrown tech like Bhargavastra.

As there has been a social media buzz on India attacking nuclear facilities in Pakistan, India's Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday (May 13) said that the military action from our side was entirely in the conventional domain.
When asked about the "social media buzz as well as international media reporting about nuclear leakage in Pakistan", India replied that it is for Pakistan to answer.
"The military action from our side was entirely in the conventional domain. This is also made clear in the defence briefing yesterday. India has a firm stance that it will not give in to nuclear blackmail or allow cross-border terrorism to be conducted invoking it," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

"During the defence briefing, India made it clear about what was our targets," he continued.
Moreover, in the latest statement made by the Pakistan Foreign Office, the MEA Spokesperson said that a nation that has nurtured terrorism on an industrial scale should think that it can escape the consequences is fooling itself.
"We have seen the statement made by the Pakistani side. Pakistan's Ministry of Water Resources sent a formal letter to India’s Ministry of Jal Shakti, requesting a review of the decision to put the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance. In a statement on May 9, Pakistan said that they had responded to the Indian letters about the abeyance in the treaty. Pakistan has claimed that there is no provision in the treaty to hold it in abeyance. India and Pakistan announced a ceasefire understanding amid growing hostilities between the two countries after Operation Sindoor and Pahalgam terror attacks.
As per protocol, sources confirmed that the letter by Pakistan's Ministry of Water Resources has been forwarded to the Ministry of External Affairs.

‘Language of gutters…’: HC orders FIR against BJP MP over ‘unpardonable’ remarks on Col Sofiya Qureshi

The Pakistan government is likely to compensate Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar, a UN-designated terrorist, with Rs 14 crore as he claimed that many of his family members were killed in India's targeted strike in Pakistan's Bahawalpur under Operation Sindoor.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced comprehensive support and a compensation of Rs 1 crore per deceased for the legal heirs of those killed in Indian airstrikes, according to the Pakistan PMO.
India launched Operation Sindoor on the night of May 7, in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack which claimed the lives of 26 people. The Indian Armed Forces carried precision strikes and hit nine terrorist infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Bahawalpur was significant for India, as the targeted Subhan Allah campus functioned as the headquarters of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).
The 18-acre facility that functioned as a JeM hub was reduced to rubble, but Masood Azhar survived and is believed to be hiding somewhere with the help of the Pakistani establishment.

Masood Azhar's family killed

A letter said to be issued by Masood Azhar claimed that those killed included his sister, her husband, nephew, niece and others. As Azhar remains possibly the only surviving legal heir, he might now be entitled to get Rs 1 crore for each of the 14 family members killed, summing up to 14 crores.

Moreover, Pakistan PM Sharif's relief package also included a commitment to rebuild houses destroyed in the Indian strikes. However, it was widely condemned.
The Subhan Allah complex in Bahawalpur was one of the high-stakes targets for India in Operation Sindoor, the Indian military’s cross-border strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK).
Spread across 18 acres, the campus housed a mosque and served as the ideological and operational hub for terror recruitment, indoctrination, and fundraising.
Azhar had been missing from public view for several months and had only resurfaced in Bahawalpur at the fag end of 2024.
The Indian intelligence had a close eye on his movements, and as per the latest satellite imagery and human intelligence, he had resumed command over the terrorist activities from within the walled complex in Bahawalpur.

Operation Sindoor: Indian PM warns Pak of more strikes if there is a terror attack

Over the last two decades, Pakistan has poured more than $4 billion into buying, upgrading and maintaining its fleet of F-16 fighter jets from the United States. Contrary to some reports, much of this spending came from Pakistan’s own funds, not from American military aid.
Records show that in 2010 alone, Pakistan paid $1.4 billion for 18 new F-16 Block-52 jets and another $1.3 billion to upgrade its older jets. Six years later, another $699 million was spent on eight more F-16s with full systems. In 2011, Pakistan also ordered $62 million worth of spare parts.

The trend continued with maintenance contracts. In 2019, a $125 million package funded round-the-clock technical oversight, while in 2022, Pakistan paid $450 million for a sustainment deal covering spares, repairs, and engineering services.
Lockheed Martin, the American company behind the F-16, made huge profits from these deals. With an average operating margin of around 11%, it’s estimated that the US defence industry earned nearly $445 million in profit from Pakistan’s F-16-related contracts.
Here’s a look at how the numbers add up:

18 F-16 jets (2010): $1.4B → ~$154M profit

F-16 upgrades (2010): $1.3B → ~$143M profit

8 F-16 jets (2016): $699M → ~$77M profit

Technical support (2019): $125M → ~$14M profit

Spare parts (2011): $62M → ~$7M profit

Total estimated US industry profit: $445 million
Total cost to Pakistan: over $4 billion

The F-16 journey began in the early 1980s, when the US sold up to 110 jets to Pakistan under President Reagan. But by 1990, sanctions hit due to Pakistan’s nuclear programme, freezing deliveries.
After 9/11, Pakistan returned as a key US partner in the so-called war on terror. Military ties resumed, and in 2005, two upgraded F-16s were handed over as military aid. In 2006, a major upgrade programme began, mostly funded by Pakistan with a small amount ($108 million) of American assistance.
In 2010, Pakistan received 18 brand-new F-16 Block 52 jets for $1.4 billion. These were pitched as a tool to strike terror in camps with precision. Reports said this was a sign of deeper US-Pakistan ties post-9/11.
By late 2008, Pakistan had asked to use $368 million in US Foreign Military Financing (FMF) for upgrades. Still, over 80% of the total cost came from Pakistan’s own funds.

Tight restrictions on how Pakistan could use the jets

Every F-16 deal with Pakistan came with end-user conditions. The US made it clear: The jets were to be used only for counterterror operations, not against other nations.
Washington closely monitored how Pakistan used the aircraft, aiming to stop any action that might destabilise the region. Despite these limitations, Islamabad continued to invest heavily in these jets.

World: Records show that in 2010 alone, Pakistan paid $1.4 billion for 18 new F-16 Block-52 jets and another $1.3 billion to upgrade its older jets.

Here’s a look at how the numbers add up: 18 F-16 jets (2010): $1.4B → ~$154M profit F-16 upgrades (2010): $1.3B → ~$143M profit 8 F-16 jets (2016): $699M → ~$77M profit Support deal (2022): $450M → ~$50M profit Technical support (2019): $125M → ~$14M profit Spare parts (2011): $62M → ~$7M profit Total estimated US industry profit: $445 million Total cost to Pakistan: over $4 billion History of F-16 deals with Pakistan The F-16 journey began in the early 1980s, when the US sold up to 110 jets to Pakistan under President Reagan. Operation Sindoor: How Modi government fortified defence and offensive capabilities

New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Adampur airbase will be seen as a key symbolic message to Rawalpindi amid the information warfare it has been engaging in. During the visit on Tuesday morning, the Indian PM got briefings from top Indian Air Force leadership, including Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, on Operation Sindoor and met with the Indian military personnel who played a key role in it. The airbase played a key role in the Indian response to the Pakistani attack.
In many of the pictures released by the Indian government, the Indian PM is seen in front of S400 systems, which played a key role in defending Indian assets targeted by the Pakistani attack last week. This comes amid the Pakistani military claiming that it was able to destroy the S400 systems and damage the airbase.

On Sunday, in a special military presser, Pakistan Air Force Air Vice Marshal Aurangzeb Ahmed claimed to attack and destroy S400 at the Adampur airbase. The visit of the Indian prime minister essentially debunks Pakistani claims. India had launched Operation Sindoor on 7th May, after the Pahalgam terror attack of 22nd April by Pakistan-backed terrorists.
On 7th May, India made precision strikes on terror bases in Muridke, Bahawalpur, and places in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. After the Pakistani attacks in response to Indian precision strikes on terror camps, India launched a massive retaliation in which key air bases like Nur Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, Bholari, Jacobabad, Skardu, and Sargodha suffered major losses.

On Sunday, 11th May 2025, the Indian military showed satellite pictures of the damages caused to Pakistani military bases by Indian precision strikes, something that was corroborated by social media imagery, including videos. It is important to note that during the briefing by the Pakistani military later in the day (Sunday), neither the Pakistani side challenged the images released by the Indian side nor were any questions on that asked by the Pakistani journalists and international media. The briefing by the Pakistani side lacked specifics and shouldered itself on international and Indian media coverage.
The Indian government’s fact check office, PIB Fact Check, on Monday confirmed that the Pakistani military used an edited clip of Indian media coverage to further Pakistani propaganda.

PM Modi’s visit to Adampur airbase debunks Pakistani claims

India is preparing to present its case at the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) 1267 Sanctions Committee, aiming to officially list The Resistance Front (TRF) as a terrorist organisation. This move comes in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack on 22 April, which left 26 civilians dead and further strained India-Pakistan ties.

India to present new evidence at UNSC

A special Indian delegation will attend the 1267 Committee meeting with what officials call fresh evidence showing Pakistan’s backing for terror groups. This new dossier will underline TRF’s role in the Pahalgam attack and link the outfit to wider terror activity backed by Pakistan.

TRF, believed to be a proxy for the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba, has so far avoided UN sanctions, mainly due to opposition from Pakistan its support from China. Both countries have repeatedly blocked proposals targeting TRF, despite mounting evidence of its involvement in terrorist incidents in India.
India hopes the latest push, backed by concrete proof, will sway the committee.

What is the UNSC 1267 Sanctions Committee?

The 1267 Committee, also known as the ISIS and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee, was formed under a UN resolution in 1999. It was originally focused on Al-Qaeda and the Taliban but has since been updated to address threats from ISIS and related groups. Key updates to the resolution were made in 2011 and 2015.
The committee is made up of all 15 members of the UNSC, including permanent and rotating members like Pakistan. It plays a central role in enforcing sanctions such as asset freezes, travel bans, and arms embargo on people and groups linked to terrorism.

A powerful tool in global counterterrorism

The 1267 list is effectively a global watchlist of sanctioned terrorists. It includes many Pakistani nationals and residents, reflecting long-standing concerns about the country’s role in harbouring terror groups.

How can an organisation be added to 1267 Sanctions Committee's list?

For a name to be added to this list, any UN member state can propose it, but the process requires consensus. If even one member objects within five working days, the listing is blocked. Members can also delay the decision by placing a “technical hold” while they request more details.
To be listed, the proposal must clearly demonstrate that the individual or group was involved in planning, funding, or carrying out acts of terrorism tied to ISIS, Al-Qaeda, or any of their affiliates.
Once submitted, if no country objects within five days, the listing goes through. If there is an objection or a hold, the matter stays pending for up to six months. The hold can be extended by three more months if needed. If there is no final objection by the end of this period, the listing is approved.
However, an outright objection by any UNSC member effectively kills the proposal, something India has faced before, especially when China has stepped in.

What is UNSC 1267? Sanctions committee where India plans to list TRF over Pahalgam attack, call out Pakistan’s support for terror groups

India has indirectly rejected US President Donald Trump’s statement that the United States brokered the recent ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Tuesday (May 13) said that the ceasefire understanding was reached directly between the two countries without any third-party involvement.
Without naming Trump, Jaiswal said, “We have a long-standing national position that any issues pertaining to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir have to be addressed by India and Pakistan bilaterally. That stated policy has not changed.”

MEA says J&K is a bilateral issue, not open to third-party mediation

Jaiswal further underlined that Jammu and Kashmir remains a bilateral issue between New Delhi and Islamabad. “The outstanding matter is the vacation of illegally occupied Indian territory by Pakistan,” the MEA spokesperson reiterated.

India clarifies no trade deal linked to ceasefire

Responding to Trump's claim that trade incentives were used as leverage to push India and Pakistan towards peace, the MEA confirmed there was no such conversation. “There was no reference to trade in any of these conversations,” Jaiswal said, referring to the 9 May call between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US Vice President JD Vance.
India maintains that the ceasefire agreement was reached through direct military communication between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries on 10 May. New Delhi says it was Pakistan that initiated the talks, not the US.

Trump claims trade pressure helped peace talks

On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump had said on Saturday, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both countries for using Common Sense and Great Intelligence.”
On Monday, he went further, saying, “I'm very proud to let you know that the leadership of Indian and Pakistan was unwavering and powerful... We helped a lot, and we also helped with trade. I said, Come on, we're going to do a lot of trade with you guys. Let's stop it... If you stop it, we're doing trade. If you don't stop it, we're not going to do any trade.”
He added, “People have never really used trade the way I used it... and all of a sudden they said, I think we're gonna stop, and they have.”

'If you will raise eyes at India, there will be - DESTRUCTION': PM Modi says Indian Army made Pak army 'bite the dust '

Prime Minister Narendra Modi complimented the Indian Armed Forces’ personnel and praised the modern weapons by drawing a parallel with the famed agility of Maharana Pratap’s legendary horse Chetak while quoting a verse from a poem.
Addressing the personnel at the Adampur air base in Punjab during his surprise visit on Tuesday morning, PM Modi said, “These few lines were written for Maharana Pratap’s popular horse Chetak, ‘Kaushal dikhlaya chaalo mein, Udd gaya bhayanak bhaalo mein, Nirbhik gaya vo dhaalo mein, Sarpat dauda karwalo mein’. These lines are fit to modern-day Indian weapons too. Our Armed Forces have boosted unity amongst people of India through Operation Sindoor.” “You have protected Indian borders. Our Air Force has precisely targeted terror camps in Pakistan within 20-25 minutes… Our target was to hit the terror headquarters in Pakistan.”
Chetak was Maharana Pratap’s horse, known for his bravery, loyalty, and the legendary Battle of Haldighati. Chetak was known for his exceptional alertness and had played a crucial role in the battle, helping Maharana Pratap, the King of Mewar, escape after sustaining injuries. He is said to have jumped a wide river on three legs to save Pratap’s life.
Chetak’s legend is an illustrious segment of Indian folklore, epitomising the loyalty, courage, and spirit of the Rajputs.
Even a memorial called “Chetak Smarak” was built at the place where the horse is said to have died, marking the site of his final act of courage and sacrifice.

Following the dastardly terror attack in J&K's Pahalgam, India launched Operation Sindoor in retaliation for the brutal killing of innocent tourists. This led to cross-border tensions, amid all this, Pakistan has been conveniently distancing itself from the claims that it had anything to do with the attacks.
The April 22 attack was orchestrated by terror group The Resistance Front (TRF), which is an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). All these terror outfits have been comfortably housed and nurtured on Pakistani soil.
As both nuclear-armed nations were embroiled in firefighting across the border, Pakistan refused to declare its damages, which was a result of India's targeted strikes on the terrorist infrastructure in the country. When Islamabad struck Indian military facility, New Delhi responded. This time around, the Indian tri-services aimed at bringing down the military facilities. Pakistan suffered heavy losses but had its mouth sealed when it came to released the extent of damage. They had been blowing the trumpet as though they won.
