New Zealand have appointed former skipper Stephen Fleming and England’s Ian Bell as part of their new coaching staff for the forthcoming months. The appointments come on a short-term basis and will focus on boosting the team’s away performance. The project will include the upcoming ODI World Cup, where the Kiwis will be one of the favourites to clinch the title. The appointment also includes former England wicketkeeper batter James Forster who will serve as assistant batting coach during the upcoming tour.

<h2>What will be the role of new appointments?</h2>

Bell, now a coach having hung his boots from national duty, will serve as batting coach and assistant to Luke Ronchi during the T20I series against England that starts on August 30. He will then take over as batting coach for the ODI series against England and Bangladesh as they prepare for the ODI World Cup in India.

"Ian Bell has had a broad range of experiences as batting coach since retiring, working with Derbyshire, Hobart Hurricanes, England U19, and Lions as well as his current role with the Birmingham Phoenix,” added a quote from New Zealand team manager Simon Insley.

It is understood that Fleming will bring his experience to the table as they prepare for the ODI World Cup, where they have been runners-up in the last two editions. The coaching staff will also see the addition of former Pakistan spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, who will help the team during the Test series in Bangladesh after the World Cup.

"The well-being of our players and staff is of vital importance with the sheer amount of cricket being played these days," team manager Insley said.

"Following the T20 team's departure to the UAE (Aug 12), the team will be on the road right through until December 16 when the Test team returns, ahead of a busy home summer.”

It is also understood that head coach Gary Stead will take a short break from the game and won’t be available for the Bangladesh tour, before and after the ODI World Cup. Instead, Ronchi will be the acting head coach of the side as they prepare for a busy home summer.

CWC 2023: ICC announces schedule for warm-up games, each team to play two matches

The BCCI selectors, on Monday (August 21), announced India's 17-man squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition. The squad includes captain Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, etc., whereas it also marks the return of middle-order duo Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul. Yuzvendra Chahal was the notable omission from the 17-member squad for the continental tournament, which kicks off on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan. The upcoming edition will be jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Chahal's snub made heads turn as India have gone ahead with only one premier spinner in the form of Kuldeep Yadav whereas Jadeja and Axar Patel complete the spin department. Many former cricketers lashed out at the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors for dropping Chahal. Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh also slammed the call and backed Chahal for the upcoming home ODI World Cup, which will begin soon after the Asia Cup on October 05.&nbsp;

On his YouTube channel, Bhajji said, "The one thing I feel is lacking in the team,&nbsp;it's the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal. A leg-spinner who can get the ball to turn away. If you talk about genuine spinner, I don't think there's any spinner in India better than Chahal in white-ball format. Yes, his last few games weren't good, but that doesn't make him a bad bowler."

“I think his presence in the team was necessary. I hope the doors aren't closed to him. It's important to consider him for the World Cup because the tournament is in India. Chahal is a proven match-winner. I can understand his form isn't good, so you may have rested him. But I think if he was with the team, his confidence would've stayed intact. Any player who comes back after being dropped, the pressure to perform is always there," he added.

After India's squad got announced, captain Rohit addressed the press and opened up on the spinners finalised for the Asia Cup. He said, "We had a deep discussion about an off-spinner. And about a leg-spinner as well. Where the thing actually boils down is, the batting option at No. 8 and No. 9."

"We want somebody who can bat at that spot. Axar being Axar, he had a good run this year, and batted well in white-ball cricket, especially. He did not get a lot of opportunities in red-ball but he batted well in white-ball cricket, especially in the IPL. In the West Indies tour, he couldn't get a lot of opportunities because he bats at the backend. With him being there, it allows us the option of first having a left-hander whom we can use up the order and go in to play the spinners. He can do that for us," Rohit stated.

Hitman added,&nbsp;"We thought about off-spinners as well, Ashwin and Washi as well but right now, Chahal has to miss out because we can only get 17 players there. The only way we could have done that (brought him in) is by taking one of the seamers out. We cannot really do that because seamers are going to play a big role in the next 2 months, considering the number of games in the next two months. Some of them are coming back after a long time. We wanted to get them in and see what they can do."

Chahal, a veteran of 72 ODIs,&nbsp;has&nbsp;claimed 121 wickets in the shorter format and was part of Virat Kohli-led India's 2019 ODI World Cup campaign, where the Men in Blue bowed out in the semi-finals.

'No white-ball spinner better than him in India': Harbhajan on Chahal's Asia Cup snub, backs him for CWC '23

From Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli: Top 6 Indian Batters with Most 50-plus scores in ODI World Cups

The BCCI selectors, headed by Ajit Agarkar, announced India's 17-man squad for the Asia Cup on Monday (August 23). The continental tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan, is set to commence on August 30 whereas India will kick off their campaign on September 02 when they take on Pakistan in Pallekele in the Island nation. The competition will be an ideal dress rehearsal for the upcoming ODI World Cup&nbsp;which gets underway in India on October 05.

With regard to the 50-over ICC event, Rohit Sharma-led India are preparing hard and will closely monitor the progress of their middle and lower order as there still remain&nbsp;a lot of issues for the No. 4 spot. Shreyas Iyer, who is a top contender for the No. 4 spot, is set to feature in the continental tournament after a long injury layoff -- in early February. In his absence, India have tried plenty of backups such as Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, however, no one cemented the spot (as a backup for Iyer) despite Samson's decent faring.&nbsp;

Moreover, KL Rahul -- who bats at No. 5 -- is also coming back to international cricket after a long time (since his hip injury IPL 2023's latter stages). Thus, India still have lots to do to fix their middle order before the World Cup commences. In this regard, former India head coach Ravi Shastri backed Virat Kohli to drop down to No. 4.&nbsp;

Shastri told Star Sports channel, "If Virat has to bat at four, he will bat at four in the interest of the side. You know, there were times I thought of it." He added that&nbsp;during the 2019 World Cup, he considered changing Kohli's place "just to break that top heavy line-up".

Shastri revealed, "You know, because if we lose two or three at the top, we are gone and it was proved. If you look at Virat Kohli's record, he is good enough at number four."

<h2>'In 2007 World Cup, Dravid and Chappell sent Tendulkar at No. 4 that became a huge controversy'</h2>

Now, former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar has shared his take on whether Kohli should bat at No. 4 in the upcoming World Cup. In a segment with Tom Moody, on Star Sports, Manjrekar said, "The more and more you talk about other options like Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli seems to get relegated. He has sort of become the scapegoat in the sense that you bat him at No. 4 and all your problems are solved."

"There is also a cultural issue in Indian cricket. In 2007 World Cup when the team management of Rahul Dravid and Greg Chappell sent Tendulkar at No. 4 instead of opening because they had people like Virender Sehwag and others at the top of the order. But that became a huge controversy. So it is really up to Kohli, an iconic player, on whether he wants to bat at No.4. It seems like a perfectly simple solution, but it concerns Kohli," he added.

He has become the scapegoat: Sanjay Manjrekar reacts to Ravi Shastri's 'Virat Kohli can bat at No. 4' remark

Former Australia great Adam Gilchrist has underlined the importance of David Warner in the side as the team prepares for a crucial next few months. Warner, 36, now in the twilight of his career, could be a vital tool for Australia, according to Gilchrist, despite him facing competition from Mitchell Marsh for the opening spot. The Aussies will have two ODI series before the World Cup begins to test and experiment with their side.

<h2>Gilchrist wants Warner in the Playing XI</h2>

"You don't take (Warner) if you're not going to start with him and open with him," Gilchrist was quoted by cricket.com.au.

"He well and truly warrants being picked in that World Cup squad and the starting XI. He's a World Cup winner. I think his knowledge and experience in India will be vitally important to the Aussies doing well.”

The left-hand batter from New South Wales missed the ODI series against India in March with an elbow injury. Marsh deputised for him as an opener and was seen in a brilliant form that earned him the Player of the Series award. However, there are fears that Warner despite being in the squad for the World Cup could miss out in the Playing XI.

"He (Warner) doesn't mind being backed into a corner," Gilchrist said.

"That's probably not the way he always wants it to play out but he knows how to throw a counter-punch here and there."

<h2>Australia’s busy schedule</h2>

The Aussies are scheduled to face South Africa in a three-match T20I series followed by a five-match ODI series in August and September. They will then head to India for a three-match ODI series followed by the ODI World Cup. Skipper Pat Cummins won’t be available for the South Africa series but is expected to travel there while Steve Smith will also miss the series. Both are nursing a wrist injury, but are hopeful of returning to the national side for the India series.

In the absence of Cummins during the South Africa tour, Marsh will take charge of the side. Australia will start their ODI World Cup campaign against India on Sunday, October 8 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

CWC 2023: Adam Gilchrist underlines David Warner's role, claims 'his knowledge and experience will be vital'

Rohit Sharma-led India are set to feature in the forthcoming Asia Cup, which kicks off on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan. The Men in Blue will open their campaign versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka as the continental tournament will be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The forthcoming competition will be held in the 50-over format as it will be an ideal dress rehearsal for the upcoming home ODI World Cup, which commences on October 05 in India.

As India have been without an ICC title since 2013, when they won the Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni, Rohit &amp; Co. have a challenging&nbsp;few months, with the Asia Cup and ODI WC. Rohit will be eager to become the third Indian captain to lift the 50-over mega title after Kapil Dev and Dhoni. Under Dhoni, India won the 2011 edition -- co-hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka -- where Rohit wasn't part of the squad.&nbsp;

Raja Venkat, one of the members of the BCCI selection panel headed by Kris Srikkanth in 2011, has now revealed the reason behind Hitman's omission.

<h2>'Gary Kirsten felt it was a perfect selection but MS Dhoni wanted Piyush Chawla'</h2>

"When we sat to select the team, Rohit was very much in the scheme of things. Yashpal Sharma and I were in South Africa at that time because India was touring South Africa, and the other three selectors – Srikkanth, [Surendra] Bhave and [Narendra] Hirwani – were in Chennai. So, when we were selecting the team, numbers 1-14, every name was accepted by the panel. No. 15, we suggested the name of Rohit Sharma. Gary Kirsten also felt it was a perfect selection. But the captain wanted Piyush Chawla. So immediately, Kirsten somersaulted. He said: 'I think that's a better choice.' So, that is how Rohit Sharma got left out," Venkat recently told RevSportz during a freewheeling chat.

Venkat added, "We didn't get a chance to talk to him, but again we were also disappointed that we couldn't select him. But when the captain and coach wanted Piyush as the 15th member, we all accepted it. Initially, we had selected the 15 which we all felt was the right one. Unfortunately, we had to make one change, and we had to give it to the captain and the coach.".

Back in 2011, India won the championship by beating teams such as Australia, Pakistan, West Indies and Sri Lanka -- in the final -- to win the title after 28 years. As Rohit missed out on being part of India's victorious run in 2011, he will be desperate to lead his side to the championship this time around in the October-November competition. The home side will kick off their campaign against five-time winners Australia on October 08 in Chennai.&nbsp;

Kirsten had Rohit in India's 2011 ODI WC plans but Dhoni wanted...: Ex-BCCI selector makes big revelation

On Monday (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's 17-man squad for the Asia Cup 2023 edition, set to kick off on August 30. The Rohit Sharma-led squad comprises several star players and all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been retained as Hitman's deputy for the continental tournament, to be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Paikistan. While there were some reports which indicated that Jasprit Bumrah might pip Hardik as the vice-captain, the BCCI selectors have backed Hardik.&nbsp;

Hardik's captaincy was criticised during India's five-match T20I series versus West Indies, held in West Indies and USA. Some of his statements also made heads turn whereas he failed to inspire with the bat and ball. With the bat, the 29-year-old Hardik ended with 77 runs at a strike rate of 110. However, he remains the white-ball vice-captain and former Indian cricketer Madan Lal has backed him to be the next captain but shared an important advice for the talented all-rounder.&nbsp;

"See, he definitely could be the next captain, the way he is going about leading in T20Is. But my concern is not that. Hardik has to perform. He is so talented and has done well, but where is the Hardik Pandya that scored 92 against Australia? That sort of form I want to see Hardik in," Lal told&nbsp;Hindustan Times&nbsp;on the sidelines of the CEAT Awards.

Lal, India's 1983 World Cup winning all-rounder, further added, "At the same time, I am very happy that he is bowling. We need him bowling in the World Cup as that sixth bowler. They have given him a very important role and Hardik has to ensure that he does well."

Needless to say, Hardik's form will be extremely crucial for India in the upcoming Asia Cup as well as the ODI World Cup, which begins in India on October 05. The all-rounder will like to silence his critics in style with some all-round performances in the upcoming multi-nation events.&nbsp;

IN PICS | A look at India's FAIRYTALE dominance over Pakistan in ODI World Cup

From Sachin Tendulkar to Kapil Dev: Top 6 Indians with most sixes in ODI World Cups

With around three months to go before the start of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, the final schedule is yet to be out. With ICC and hosts organiser BCCI finalising nitty-gritty’s as things stand, the latest reports suggest the much-awaited announcement could finally be out on June 27 during an event in Mumbai.

Per an invite shared by the ICC, an event in Mumbai will take place next week with a ‘key announcement’ around the 2023 ODI World Cup, tentatively scheduled from October 5 to November 19.

While eight of the ten teams are confirmed, including the hosts India, its neighbours Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, alongside England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, the fight for the remaining two spots is ongoing in the World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe.

Alongside the dates and fixtures, a final announcement about the venues is also likely.

Earlier reports suggested that Pakistan's disagreement with playing at certain venues is one of the reasons why the schedule announcement got delayed. According to the tentative schedule, Pakistan is supposed to play Australia in Bengaluru on October 20 and Afghanistan three days later on October 23 in Chennai. However, the PCB asked to swap venues for these two games, which later was denied by both the ICC and BCCI.

Besides, the PCB also shared its reservation over playing India in the high-octane clash on October 15 at the newly-built Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Indian board, in its response, denied this request too.

Meanwhile, the marquee ten-team tournament will be played in the Round-Robin format as it was during the previous edition in England in 2019, with all teams playing against each other to determine the top four – who will then play in the semis.

While the final will take place in Ahmedabad, Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and either the Eden Gardens in Kolkata or the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai could host both semi-finals.

<h2>India’s Road to the 2023 ODI World Cup</h2>

Team India will to fly to the Caribbean Islands for a ten-match tour, including two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is. Following that, India will travel to Ireland for a short three-match T20Is before participating in the Asia Cup 2023 (co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka). Per the FTP, India will next host Australia for a three-match ODIs before hosting the 2023 ODI World Cup.

ICC to announce 2023 ODI World Cup schedule on June 27 - Reports

The Indian Cricket Team is deprived of left-handed batters in the middle order, with Ravindra Jadeja – at number seven, as the only sure starter. Southpaw Tilak Varma, who is making the right noises as things stand in the ongoing Caribbean white-ball series, ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin feels his inclusion, even as a backup in the World Cup 2023 squad, will be a plus for the home team.

As the selection committee will soon name the preliminary squad for the marquee event, starting on October 5 in Ahmedabad, Tilak, as Ashwin feels, will remain in contention. While the onus will be on unfit Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul to take up the number four&nbsp;and five slots&nbsp;respectively, in the worst-case scenario (considering both are injured and unavailable), having Tilak alongside Sanju Samson and even Suryakumar Yadav as backups will not hurt India.

Speaking his heart out on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said knowing how well the left-handers can take down the spinners in the middle overs, with Tilak around, India can utilise his talent and put pressure on big teams like Australia and England.

"This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don't have enough backups? Because Sanju Samson has performed really well in ODIs."&nbsp;

"But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) is the only left-handed batter in the top 7," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

"And look at the spinners from all the top teams. Australia have Ashton Agar. England have Moeen Ali and a leggie in Adil Rashid. So, most teams don't have a finger spinner to challenge the left-handed batters. That is why the emergence of Tilak is crucial," Ashwin added.

<h2>Tilak’s run in the Caribbean is turning heads</h2>

So far, in three outings, Tilak has a fifty to his name and an unbeaten 49, with the latter coming during India’s latest win in the 3rd T20I. His attacking approach has kept him on everyone’s radar, with selectors also keeping a keen eye on him.

Ashwin feels the way Tilak began his career, he made everyone aware of his presence, admitting there is no harm in going ahead with the 20-year-old as India chases first ICC trophy since 2013.

"It is still early, but will they see him as an option? He has at least made everyone notice him. He is surely in the contingency plan. Because any selector who would have seen that knock would have gone, 'Woah!'" Ashwin said.&nbsp;

Jasprit Bumrah returns: Major competitions missed by India pacer since mid-2022

Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar shared his take on India's 10-year-long ICC title drought since 2013. It is to be noted that Team India last won a mega event during the 2013 Champions Trophy, when MS Dhoni-led, inexperienced Indian&nbsp;line-up beat England in a rain-marred final, by five runs (DLS method), to lift the coveted title in England and Wales.

Since then, India have reached the final of mega events on four occasions (in T20 World Cup 2014, the 2017 Champions Trophy, the two WTC finals) and semi-finals on as many instances (during the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cup, 2016 and 2022 T20 World Cup). However, they could not add to their trophy cabinet.

Akhar, in an interview with RevSportz, opined on India's empty trophy cabinet since 2013 and feels things have gone south for India ever since Dhoni stepped down as the captain. Under the legendary skipper, India won the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. In addition, he led India to the No. 1 spot in the ICC Test Rankings.&nbsp;

<h2>'The moment Dhoni gave up captaincy, things went south for India'</h2>

Akhtar said, "First of all, it is the pressure that you all put on the team. It is almost impossible to play with such pressure. Like I told you, it is as if you can’t lose. If you, God forbid, lose, all hell will break loose."

He further opined, "The second and more important point is you had someone who could soak in all the pressure, and protect his teammates. He would not let his teammates feel the pressure, and that was the best thing about MS Dhoni. You won the 2007 World T20 under him, the 2011 World Cup and then the 2013 Champions Trophy. The moment Dhoni gave up the captaincy, things went south for India."

On the current Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who has already led India in two ICC events&nbsp;but not managed any success, the former Pakistani pacer stated, "When I see Rohit, I keep asking this question of myself if he should have accepted captaincy in the first place? I think Rohit feels panic on occasion and lets the pressure get to him. The pressure of captaincy cripples you, and it happened with Virat Kohli also. That’s why you don’t win a major tournament."

Akhtar added, "Make no mistake, Rohit does have the team to win the World Cup. As a batter, he is perhaps more talented than Virat Kohli also. He is a classical batsman and the kind of shots he plays, it is just mind-blowing. But with captaincy, is he being able to do that? Let him prove me wrong and all of us wrong, for that’s what all of India will want him to do in this World Cup."

Under Dhoni, India became temperamentally strong during crunch situations, concentrated more on fielding and running between wickets,&nbsp;and saw a smooth transition with the baton being passed to Virat Kohli, who was later replaced by Rohit as full-time captain early in 2022. Now, Rohit will look to end India's title drought with a win in the upcoming home ODI World Cup, set to begin on October 05 in Ahmedabad.

The moment Dhoni gave up the captaincy, things went south for India." On the current Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who has already led India in two ICC events but not managed any success, the former Pakistani pacer stated, "When I see Rohit, I keep asking this question of myself if he should have accepted captaincy in the first place? I think Rohit feels panic on occasion and lets the pressure get to him. The pressure of captaincy cripples you, and it happened with Virat Kohli also. That’s why you don’t win a major tournament." Also read: No Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer! Harbhajan Singh names his India squad for Asia Cup 2023 Akhtar added, "Make no mistake, Rohit does have the team to win the World Cup. As a batter, he is perhaps more talented than Virat Kohli also. He is a classical batsman and the kind of shots he plays, it is just mind-blowing. But with captaincy, is he being able to do that? Let him prove me wrong and all of us wrong, for that’s what all of India will want him to do in this World Cup." Under Dhoni, India became temperamentally strong during crunch situations, concentrated more on fielding and running between wickets, and saw a smooth transition with the baton being passed to Virat Kohli, who was later replaced by Rohit as full-time captain early in 2022. Now, Rohit will look to end India's title drought with a win in the upcoming home ODI World Cup, set to begin on October 05 in Ahmedabad. Moment MS Dhoni gave up captaincy, things went south: Akhtar on India's ICC title drought since 2013

Jasprit Bumrah is set to return to international cricket after a long layoff due to a back injury. He last represented India in September 2022 and went on to miss the T20 World Cup 2022, tour of Bangladesh, home Tests versus Australia, IPL 2023, the WTC final and entire tour of West Indies. Bumrah's return is a huge sigh of relief for Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led Indian team ahead of the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup at home, in October-November.&nbsp;

Bumrah's bowling will not only be closely monitored, but the Ireland T20Is also presents him a chance to showcase his leadership skills in the shortest format. It is to be noted that the ace pacer led India in the rescheduled fifth and final Test versus England, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, last year (where India lost by seven wickets in defence of 378). While some believe Bumrah should not have been given the added responsibility of leading the side, despite him being the most experienced, in his comeback series, former Indian stumper Saba Karim believes it is the right call.&nbsp;

As quoted by PTI, the former selector said, "The team management and selectors would be more concerned about Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness levels and match fitness. This (series) is a T20 format and it (captaincy) won’t add more burden on him. It will only help him to understand his body better. They (India) are playing three T20 games, he can play at different phases."

IND vs IRE, 1st T20I: Captaincy will only help Bumrah to understand his body better, opines ex-Indian stumper

Former India head player and coach Ravi Shastri has backed 'seasoned captain' Rohit Sharma ahead of the two-time winners' campaign in the much-awaited ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition. The mega event will be entirely hosted by India in October-November, with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in the tournament opener on October 05. Team India will open their campaign versus five-time winners Australia in Chennai on October 08. They will face arch-rivals Pakistan on October 14 in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

<h2>'Come CWC 2023, Rohit will up the ante'</h2>

Shastri said while speaking on Star Sports, “I think he is a seasoned captain. Come the World Cup, he will up the ante. Bilaterals are one thing. When it comes to big tournaments, you switch on in a different manner. He knows the nucleus of the players. It is about him ensuring that everyone in that batting lineup knows that they don't own batting positions."

"You've got to be flexible with your batting ladder. No matter who the name of the player is. You do not own positions. You got to have flexibility. That is paramount, and use the right guys against the right oppositions,” Shastri further asserted.

Under Rohit, India will start as one of the favourites for the coveted title despite their mixed run across formats in recent times. Rohit-led India fell flat in Asia Cup 2022 (held in T20I format), bowed out of the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in Australia, lost ODIs to Bangladesh (in the Bangla Tigers' den), 50-over home series to the Aussies and also came second in the WTC final (losing to Pat Cummins &amp; Co.). India, under Hardik Pandya, also conceded their first-ever T20I series when they recently lost to West Indies.&nbsp;

In addition, the former head coach believes that the India think tank has a group of 18-20 players that have been shortlisted for the home ODI WC. "The think tank would have thought about a group of 18 or 20 players at least four or five months before the World Cup and then given opportunities to each one of them, kept an eye on the injuries too, you know, whichever players who were part of the mix who got injuries and just come back, and then pick the right guys,” Shastri added.

India will look to end their ICC title drought since 2013 when they turn up for the 50-over showpiece event at home. Thus, Rohit has a litmus test to lead India to the mega title after a long time.

At present, Jasprit Bumrah is set to lead a second-stringed Indian team in Dublin, Ireland for a three-match T20I series which kicks off on Friday (August 18). It will mark Bumrah's international return since September 2022.

Come ODI World Cup, he will up the ante: Shastri reposes faith on captain Rohit Sharma ahead of mega event

Former Pakistan skipper Rashid Latif feels Team India would have been 100 per cent prepared for the 2023 ODI World Cup, to be held in India in October-November, had Virat Kohli remained the captain. Kohli was sacked as the ODI captain in late 2021, just a few months after he stepped down as the T20I skipper ahead of the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE.

At that time, the BCCI made it clear that it does not want two captains in&nbsp;different white-ball formats. Hence, Rohit took over as the white-ball skipper and soon became the full-time captain in early 2022, post Kohli's resignation as the Test skipper.

Since then, India have not had great success across formats. They fell flat in the Asia Cup, held in the T20I format, in 2022 and also bowed out of the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup last year, held in Australia.

Towards the end of the year, India lost the ODIs to hosts Bangladesh, conceded a home 50-over series to Australia early this year, came second in the WTC final and also lost the five T20I series to West Indies, held in West Indies and USA.

Injuries have plagued India's run as they still await the fitness reports of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer ahead of the Asia Cup, which kicks off later this month.

Thus, the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led Indian team had lots on their plate ahead of the ODI World Cup at home, in October-November.

In this regard, Latif spoke at length about India's current struggles and believes things would have been different, had Kohli remained the captain.&nbsp;

<h2>'India would have been 100% prepared for CWC '23 had Kohli remained captain'</h2>

“If they had allowed Virat Kohli to continue as captain, India would have been 100 per cent prepared for the World Cup by this time,” Latif said on his official YouTube channel.

"Indian team management has experimented with several players and if I talk about their batting, the middle and lower order — from numbers 4 to 7 — they just have not allowed any new player to settle down. There have been too many changes," he further asserted.

The former Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter added that dependence on injured seniors such as Rahul and Iyer might be risky for Team India, heading into the Asia Cup and CWC '23. Latif added, "I would say it is risky because KL and Iyer are returning from injuries."&nbsp;

At present, Jasprit Bumrah is leading a second-stringed Indian team in Ireland for three T20Is in Dublin, starting on Friday (August 18). However, the main focus is already on the Asia Cup, which commences on August 30. Soon after the continental tournament, the ODI World Cup will kick off in India&nbsp;on October 05.&nbsp;

Pakistan's Iftikhar Ahmed reacts to fake remark on Team India, lashes out at fan for 'spreading hate'

With less than two months left for the ODI World Cup&nbsp;in India in October-November, India is still figuring out how to fix their middle order. The No. 4 spot remains a huge cause of concern for Team India in recent years. They were sweating hard on finalising a No. 4 prior to the 2019 World Cup as well, and Shreyas Iyer's injury has once again put Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. in a spot of bother.

India are currently awaiting the fitness report of KL Rahul and Iyer, two of their middle-order batters, ahead of their Asia Cup squad announcement. If they are fit, the two&nbsp;will solve India's middle-order crisis going into the home World Cup. If not, India have some tough calls to make. Amid all this, former India coach Ravi Shastri admitted that he wanted Kohli to bat at No. 4 during the last World Cup, held in England and Wales.

Discussing India's squad for the upcoming ICC event, Shastri revealed on Star Sports' Selection Day,&nbsp;"If Virat has to bat at four, he will bat at four in the interest of the side. You know, there were times I thought of it. Even in the previous two World Cups, when I was coach in 2019, I thought I might have discussed that with MSK as well of him batting at four just to break that top heavy line up."

"You know, because if we lost two or three at the top, we were gone and it was proved so just for reaching that the experience. And if you look at Virat Kohli's record, he is good enough at number four,"&nbsp;Shastri added.

Under Kohli, India reached the semi-finals of the 2019 edition, losing to eventual runners-up New Zealand by 18 runs in chase of 240.

India have been a top-heavy side for a long time, especially since Rohit and Kohli's rise in the format. Till MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Kedar Jadhav's presence, India did not feel a void in the middle and lower-order but same hasn't been the case since their departures. Injuries to Iyer and Rahul have also not helped India's cause.

At present, India is gearing up for the 50-over Asia Cup, co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, which commences on August 30. It will serve as a dress rehearsal for the home ODI WC. Before the continental tournament, Jasprit Bumrah will lead a second-stringed Indian team in three T20I versus hosts Ireland, starting on August 18.

If they are fit, the two will solve India's middle-order crisis going into the home World Cup. If not, India have some tough calls to make. Amid all this, former India coach Ravi Shastri admitted that he wanted Kohli to bat at No. 4 during the last World Cup, held in England and Wales. Discussing India's squad for the upcoming ICC event, Shastri revealed on Star Sports' Selection Day, "If Virat has to bat at four, he will bat at four in the interest of the side. You know, there were times I thought of it. Even in the previous two World Cups, when I was coach in 2019, I thought I might have discussed that with MSK as well of him batting at four just to break that top heavy line up." Also read: Former India captain Virat Kohli rubbishes reports of building cricket pitch in Alibaug farmhouse "You know, because if we lost two or three at the top, we were gone and it was proved so just for reaching that the experience. And if you look at Virat Kohli's record, he is good enough at number four," Shastri added. Wanted Virat Kohli to bat at No. 4 during CWC '19, reveals former India coach Ravi Shastri

Hardik Pandya-led India lost the five-match T20I series to West Indies, in Florida, on August 13 (Sunday). This was India's first-ever five-match T20I series defeat and their maiden bilateral series loss to the Windies, comprising a minimum of three games, since 2006. Throughout the series, captain Hardik failed to impress with his decision-making whereas also struggled with the bat.

Hardik ended with 77 runs in five games, at a strike rate of 110. With him being rested for the upcoming three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, the all-rounder will now gear up for the Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which kicks off on August 30. It will serve as an ideal dress rehearsal for the Asian sides before the ODI World Cup in India, in October-November.

Before the Asia Cup, former Indian stumper Parthiv analysed Hardik's captaincy in the WI T20Is and called it a 'work in progress'. In addition, he was concerned with his form and feels the 29-year-old needs runs under his belt before the CWC '23 edition.

Highlighting how Hardik did not use Axar Patel properly in the WI T20Is, Patel told Cricbuzz, "Against Nicholas Pooran, he (Hardik Pandya) gave that over to Axar Patel and not bowling Yuzvendra Chahal. Bowling changes and the utilisation of the bowlers are something that tells me that Hardik, the captain for India, is still a work in progress. "

He added, "And there is obviously a little concern about his batting. He needs runs. He didn't get runs in the IPL, he didn't get runs in the last couple of series as well. India would want to get some runs for Hardik Pandya in the Asia Cup or the series against Australia before the World Cup."

Hardik only played one good knock in the WI tour, during the ODI series decider where he ended with an entertaining 70 not out. With the ball, he accounted for five scalps in eight white-ball games in West Indies and USA.

Hardik also had a moderate run&nbsp;in IPL 2023, ending with 346 runs at 136.75 (along with&nbsp;three wickets). He did play out the situation with caution in a few games versus New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Australia early this year, during the home ODIs. However, the ODI vice-captain will be aware that he needs to be at his all-round best, especially with the bat, heading&nbsp;into the 50-over World Cup.

India would want Hardik Pandya to get some runs in Asia Cup ahead of CWC '23, feels former Indian stumper

Virat Kohli batted only twice during India's just-concluded all-format tour of West Indies. He played the two Tests and ODI series opener before being rested for the final two games and returned home&nbsp;not being part of the T20I setup (since the 2022 T20 World Cup). During his limited time in the middle, Kohli took his international century tally to 76 with a fine 121 in the second and final Test.&nbsp;

When Kohli got to his 76th ton, talks resumed whether he would surpass Sachin Tendulkar's 100 centuries record, most by any batter at the international level. Being rested for majority of the ODIs, the former Indian captain's WI tour ended pretty soon and, thus, he could not add more to his tally.

He will now gear up for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023, in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, starting on August 30, which will soon be followed by the home ODI World Cup, in October-November.

While many believe he will be keen to come close to Tendulkar's tally and aim to break it soon, in the coming years, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa rubbished all such claims.

Uthappa, part of India's 2007 T20 World Cup win under MS Dhoni, feels Kohli isn't bothered about personal records and will be focusing on winning games for India in the upcoming Asia Cup and CWC '23.

Speaking to Times of India, the former player said. "Virat (Kohli) doesn't really care about breaking records anymore. We as people and fans are obsessed with it. He would much rather win matches for India irrespective of those hundreds. Virat's focus will be on winning matches for India in the Asia Cup and World Cup. He doesn't really care about the records."

Uthappa added, "Whether he (Virat) achieves that milestone (breaking Sachin's ODI centuries record) during the Asia Cup, World Cup or at any (other) point in his career, it doesn't matter because his sole focus is on winning matches for India, not his hundreds."

At present, the 34-year-old Kohli has a chance to break Tendulkar's record. He still has plenty of cricket left in him even if he only plays Tests and ODIs. However, he will be focused on the larger picture, i.e. of ending India's ten-year-long ICC title drought with a win in the home 50-over World Cup at home later this year.

Uthappa feels Virat Kohli not bothered about personal feats, focused on doing well in Asia Cup, CWC '23

KL Rahul is nearing full fitness at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru. Ahead of the Asia Cup squad announcement, the Indian team management is keenly awaiting the final fitness report of Rahul as well as Shreyas Iyer as their middle-order woes continue. While reports have been positive with regard to Rahul's fitness, it remains to be seen if he makes the squad for the upcoming continental tournament, starting on August 30.

While there is no doubt that India desperately need both Rahul and Iyer back in the squad, ex-Indian head coach Ravi Shastri doesn't want the former to speed up&nbsp;his return for the Asia Cup, to be jointly hosted by&nbsp;Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Shastri feels it might not be fair on Rahul to return in the multi-nation tournament and also don the gloves.

Speaking on Star Sports' Selection Day show, Shastri opined, "See when when you're talking of a player (KL Rahul) who's not played and is recovering from injury. To think of him in the XI of the Asia Cup, you're asking a little too much of the player himself. And then you're talking keeping. When a guy comes from an injury, the range of movement and things of that sort, so that's a no no."

Thus, Shastri feels India can opt for Ishan Kishan's services, an attacking left-hander who can play at the top or in the middle and keep wickets instead of rushing for Rahul's return. Rohit Sharma-led India are yet to announce the squad for the mega event, where they open their campaign on September 2 versus Pakistan. The seven-time winners are placed in Group A with Pakistan and Nepal.

Should nearly-fit KL Rahul be a part of India's XI in Asia Cup 2023? Ravi Shastri shares his take

On Tuesday (August 15), former Indian captain Virat Kohli took to his official Instagram account to slam reports which claimed that he will build&nbsp;a cricket pitch at his new farmhouse in Alibaug. It is to be noted that Kohli-Anushka Sharma's new farmhouse is under construction at the moment. Recently, they were also seen paying a visit to the farmhouse to check on the details of the construction.

While there were rumours that the star batter is investing in building a cricket pitch at the farmhouse, he has now dismissed all such claims. "Bachpan se jo akhbaar Padha hai, wo bhi fake news chaapne lage ab (The newspaper&nbsp;which I have read since childhood, has&nbsp;also started publishing fake news)," said Kohli on his Instagram story on Tuesday.

Former India captain Virat Kohli rubbishes reports of building cricket pitch in Alibaug farmhouse

It could be the end of the road for England’s Jofra Archer with the national team after he was snubbed for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand. The 15-member squad announced on Wednesday, August 16 did not have Archer’s name in it, indicating the end of the road for him at least temporarily with the national team. It is expected that England will name the same 15-member squad for the World Cup in India barring any last-minute injury changes. The squad saw the return of Ben Stokes, but there was no place for Archer.

<h2>End of the road for Archer?</h2>

"There has got to be a duty of care with Jof. We know how desperate we all are to have him - there's no doubt about that - but we've also got to get it right for him. He's been very unfortunate with these injuries.. regarding the World Cup, unfortunately, we're just running out of time,” England’s chief selector Luke Wright said after the squad announcement.

Archer has endured a tough last 24 months where he has been out of the national team set-up due to frequent injuries. England’s 2019 World Cup star has quickly gone under the radar with injuries that saw him miss the entire 2022 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) while also missing a chunk in the 2023 edition&nbsp;for Mumbai Indians.

"He's not going to come round quite quick enough, especially for the first part of the World Cup. There is a duty of care with him. We have to make sure that long-term, we get it right because we see him as a huge asset for a long time. As much as the temptation is to try and rush him in and get him in for the start of this World Cup, unfortunately, we're just going to run out of time,” Archer added.

While it looks to be the end of the road for Archer, Test skipper Ben Stokes has returned&nbsp;from retirement to be part of the New Zealand series. It is most likely that he will be part of the World Cup squad, likely to be announced before September 5. Stokes has not featured for the England national team in the white-ball format since November 2022, when he led the nation to the T20 World Cup against Pakistan in the final at Melbourne.

ENG vs NZ ODI Series: Jofra Archer not in England's World Cup plans, suggests latest snub

India lost the&nbsp;last match of the five-match T20I series&nbsp;against West Indies, in Florida, on Sunday (August 13) and conceded the series 2-3. This was India's first-ever bilateral series loss to the Windies, one comprising&nbsp;a minimum of three games, since their 1-4 loss in 2006 during the five ODIs in the Caribbean island. After the series loss, head coach Rahul Dravid admitted to India's lack of batting depth as they batted only till No. 7.

After the final T20I, Dravid said, "I think in terms of our squad here, probably it didn't allow us the flexibility in some ways to be able to change the combinations a little bit. But I think going forward, we've got to look at certain areas in which we can get better. Finding depth in our batting has been an area we are trying to address. We are trying to do the best we possibly can but that's certainly an area we can look at, how we cannot weaken our bowling attack but ensure we have a certain amount of depth in batting."

While Dravid's concerns were regarding the current T20I team, veteran Indian spinner R Ashwin reacted to it and came up with an interesting suggestion for Rohit Sharma-led Team India ahead of the upcoming home ODI World Cup, in October-November.

<h2>'You need someone like Shardul Thakur at No. 8'</h2>

Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, "You don't want your tail to start so early, and that's why you need someone like Shardul Thakur to come and smash a few balls at No. 8. But you should play your best batters and bowlers to win a match. At the same time, if you needed 36 to win from 30 balls when you are six down, you should have the ability to close down such games as well. So, that is the conundrum that India will go into ahead of the World Cup. If they play Kuldeep and Chahal together, then it gets to a situation where Kuldeep has to bat at No. 8."

At present, India's ODI setup is eagerly waiting to know the fitness status of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, two of their prominent middle-order batters, ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 and ODI WC at home. Currently, India have injury concerns with regard to the middle and lower order whereas they will also aim for more batting depth in the upcoming ICC event.

After the Windies tour, India is now gearing for three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, before the focus shifts to the 50-over Asia Cup, starting on August 30 in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. It will serve as a dress rehearsal for the ODI WC.

Ashwin reacts after Dravid shows concern for India's batting depth, shares suggestion for CWC '23

There were strong rumours&nbsp;this weekend that England's white-ball captain Jos Buttler is set to talk to his Test counterpart Ben Stokes to convince him to reverse his ODI retirement call for the forthcoming World Cup, in India. Well, it looks like the English Test skipper is ready to make a U-turn and come out of 50-over retirement for the ICC event.&nbsp;As per fresh reports, Stokes is now considering to come out of ODI retirement&nbsp;if asked by white-ball skipper Buttler.

According to a report in Telegraph Sport, Stokes if willing to risk missing IPL 2024 if he needs ample recovery time in his schedule. He represents the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the premier tournament in India.

It is to be noted that the all-rounder called it quits from the shorter format in July 2022, citing&nbsp;‘exhaustion due to too much cricket’. While he was asked about a return in ODIs during the recently-held Ashes 2023, in the United Kingdom, the 32-year-old gave a fitting response.

"I'm retired," Stokes reiterated, as quoted by the ICC. "I'm going on holiday after this game and that's as far as I'm thinking."

However, he had a different view after starring in England's T20 World Cup 2022 final win, over Pakistan, with a gritty 52* at the MCG, Melbourne last November. Back then,&nbsp;he was asked if he is inclined to return to the ODI format.

To this, Stokes&nbsp;stated, "… who knows how I might feel towards a World Cup at the time. Going to a World Cup is an amazing thing to do, to represent your country. But at the moment I'm not even thinking about that."

England's white-ball coach Matthew Mott recently opened up on Stokes' ODI future&nbsp;and told Mail Sport, "Jos (Buttler) will probably lead the way on that communication, but Ben's pretty straight with all of us. We will see if he's keen. There has not been a clear direction on what he's going to do yet, but we are still hopeful. I've always said his bowling would be a bonus, but just look at what he brings with the bat, even in the field."

It will be interesting to see if Stokes features&nbsp;in&nbsp;the 50-over mega event in India, which kicks off on October 05 with England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad. Recently, England's spin-bowling all-rounder Moeen Ali came out of Test retirement for Ashes 2023 and played a pivotal role for Stokes &amp; Co. in the five games which ended in a&nbsp;2-2 stalemate versus Australia.

England's Ben Stokes set to come out of retirement for World Cup 2023 - Reports

From colossal failure in SA to WI T20I series loss: Team India's shocking LOWS in Rahul Dravid's tenure

The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 (CWC '23) edition is not even two months away. The mega event will be held in India and, thus, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. are one of the favourites to lift the coveted title. After all, the last three editions have been won by the hosts. India, under MS Dhoni, started this trend in 2011 when the cricket-crazy country co-hosted the ODI World Cup (ODI WC) along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Back then, the Men in Blue trounced Sri Lanka in the summit clash by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai to lift the title.

Will Rohit-led Men in Blue replicate Dhoni &amp; Co.'s heroics? Well, India do have the arsenal but still lag behind in many areas. The No. 4 spot continues to be a worry, which proved to be India's Achilles heel in the 2019 edition as well. It became a musical chair with no confirmed taker. This time around, the situation is pretty much the same. The injury to Shreyas Iyer is, however, the main reason for India's No. 4 spot still being a persistent issue.&nbsp;

Since injuries to Iyer and KL Rahul, who bats at No. 5, India have tried to give a consistent run to Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav. Nonetheless, the trio haven't cemented the spot. During the ongoing India-West Indies T20Is, another candidate's name sprung up.&nbsp;

Tilak Varma, who is yet to make an ODI debut, recently wore his first-ever international cap during the WI T20Is. Since then, he has returned with scores of 39, 51, 41 and 7*. The left-hander has played the situation with aplomb, displayed a steady approach and carried out his innings with utmost responsibility and purpose. Thus, many former cricketers have backed him to become India's No. 4 in the upcoming&nbsp;World Cup. But should Team India give up on their back-ups and bring in a youngster as a wildcard entry if Iyer and Rahul remain unfit?&nbsp;

<h2>MANY BACKING TILAK VARMA AS AN OPTION</h2>

In an interaction with news agency PTI, former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad said, "First of all, we should know whether Shreyas Iyer is fit or not. So, in case, if Shreyas Iyer is ruled out, in the present scenario, one guy who fits the bill is Tilak Varma, because of his versatility, because of his ability to play fast bowling and spin bowling and also because of his ability to switch the gears as and when required. More than anything else, we don't have a left-hander at the top of the order. So all these things will definitely go in favour of Tilak Varma."

On his YouTube channel, R Ashwin stated, "This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don’t have enough backups? Because Sanju Samson has performed really well in ODIs. But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) is the only left-handed batter in the top 7."

Ashwin added, "And look at the spinners from all the top teams. Australia have Ashton Agar. England has Moeen Ali and a leggie in Adil Rashid. So, most teams don’t have a finger spinner to challenge the left-handed batters. That is why the emergence of Tilak is crucial."

<h2>WHY INDIA SHOULD NOT GO THE 2019 WAY AND SHOULD AVOID PAST MISTAKES</h2>

Without a doubt, Varma is one for the future (who can play varied roles with the bat and&nbsp;also be a handy part-time bowler). Just like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, etc., the 20-year-old Varma will also be a part of the national setup post the CWC '23 with India nearing a massive transition (with the likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, etc. in the twilight of their careers). However, his inclusion in the ODI setup with regard to the upcoming world event makes little to no sense. The Mumbai Indians (MI) star just has a handful of matches under his belt in the gruelling international circuit. While his start is surely promising, although in the shortest format, ODIs is a different ball game altogether. Look at Suryakumar. He is a T20I giant, however, admits to his woeful ODI returns (averaging a poor 24.33 in 26 games).

During the WI T20Is, Surya admitted to his 50-over woes and said, "We've played so much T20 cricket now, that we have become habituated to it. We don't play as much one-day cricket anymore. That's one of the most challenging formats for me, because you need to have different gears." He added, "If I'm honest, I know my numbers in one-day cricket are quite poor. There is no shame in admitting that. We talk about honesty, you need to be honest but it's even more important how you work and improve on it."

Varma's T20I career has started in an identical fashion with that to his idol Suresh Raina (debut at 20, both taking two catches each in maiden outing, first-ever T20I fifty in losing cause). However, he hasn't even stepped into the ODI fore, a format ruled by his childhood hero. India's legendary captain MS Dhoni repeatedly emphasised on the need for players to be experienced enough&nbsp;to counter the pressure attached to a mega event. Back in August 2008, Dhoni&nbsp;said, "You have to give everyone enough chances, not just a few games."

Moreover, India have paid the price for regular shuffles in the batting order during their preparations in the last World Cup. We all remember how Ambati Rayudu's name was missing from the final 15 with Vijay Shankar -- having played only nine ODIs -- getting the nod. In addition, when Shankar got injured during the marquee tournament, India backed an exciting young talent like Pant to fill in the No. 4 spot rather than relying on the experienced Rayudu (who occupied the No. 4 spot for majority of 2018). What followed was a messed-up chase in the CWC '19 semi-final where India failed in pursuit of 240, versus eventual runners-up New Zealand, by shuffling the batting order cluelessly.&nbsp;

Surely, Varma has an edge being a left-hander. However, India can always promote Ravindra Jadeja -- whose batting stokes are on the rise since 2018 -- in the 50-over showpiece event and, thus, not change their team combination drastically. Moreover, they also have Kishan who can bat at No. 4. Nonetheless, bringing Varma out of nowhere can jolt India's preparations. They have a rich pool of players but with the CWC '23 less than 60 days away, they cannot keep expanding their options. They have to shortlist a few and identify their No. 4 if Iyer, or even Rahul, continue to miss out due to injury concerns.

Recently, during an event, Rohit addressed&nbsp;India's&nbsp;struggle to book their No. 4 slot. He said, "Look, No. 4 has been an issue for us for a long time. After Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), nobody has come and settled themselves in. But, for a long period of time, Shreyas (Iyer) has actually batted at No. 4 and he has done well - his numbers are really good. Unfortunately, injuries have given him a bit of trouble; he has been out for a while and that is honestly what has happened in the last 4-5 years. A lot of these guys have got injured and you will always see a new guy coming and playing there."

On Varma, Hitman stated, "He looks very promising. I have seen him for two years now, he has got the hunger, and that is the most important thing." The 36-year old pointed out, "In him I can see, for the age that he is of, he is quite matured. He knows his batting so well. When I speak with him I understand that the boy knows his batting – where he has to hit, what he has to do in that period."

"That is all that I will say about him, I do not know about the World Cup and all, but definitely the guy is talented and he showed it in these few games that he has played for India," he further opined.

There is some time before India finalise their Asia Cup squad, which will also give a major hint of their CWC '23 unit. It will be wise on their part if they go with a limited pool rather than just needlessly expanding it, pushing towards a downfall as experienced in 2019.

Explained | Why it is too late to consider Tilak Varma for India's No. 4 spot for CWC '23

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif feels Team India have not done well in recent ICC events due to 'internal issues'. It is to be noted that India have not won an ICC event since their historic triumph in the 2013 Champions Trophy. Their last win in a multi-nation event came during the 2018 Asia Cup, in the UAE. At present, Rohit Sharma-led India are gearing up for the Asia Cup, in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which will be followed by the home ODI World Cup, in October-November.

Latif&nbsp;stated that&nbsp;Team India have faltered due to&nbsp;"internal issues",&nbsp;seemingly referring to former captain Virat Kohli's sacking,&nbsp;India's top-order crisis and the perennial No. 4 issue.

<h2>'India couldn't perform due to internal issues'</h2>

On his YouTube channel, the former Pakistan keeper-batter and captain pointed out, "Virat Kohli had a direction and he wanted to win, but he was sacked. Latif stated that Team India have faltered due to "internal issues", seemingly referring to former captain Virat Kohli's sacking, India's top-order crisis and the perennial No. 4 issue. 'India couldn't perform due to internal issues' On his YouTube channel, the former Pakistan keeper-batter and captain pointed out, "Virat Kohli had a direction and he wanted to win, but he was sacked. The team couldn't perform due to internal issues. They couldn't perform in ICC tournaments because, maybe, the captain didn't get the desired players. Or maybe he got, but they weren't used. India couldn't perform in ICC tournaments due to internal issues, claims former Pakistan captain

India and Pakistan are set to look horns in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 as the mind games have started to take center stage in both camps. Firing the first shots on the opposition camp, former India captain Virat Kohli praised Pakistan skipper Babar Azam for his batting and hinted that he is probably the best batter in the world right now. With three weeks to go for the first Asia Cup 2023 meeting between India and Pakistan, the build-up is taking place nicely in both camps.

<h2>Virat lauds Babar</h2>

"The first interaction I had with him [Babar] was during the 2019 [ODI] World Cup after the game in Manchester. I've known Imad [Wasim] since the Under-19 World Cup, and he said Babar wanted to have a chat. We sat down and spoke about the game. I saw a lot of regard and respect from him from day one, and that hasn't changed," Kohli said.

"Regardless of the fact he's probably the top batsman in the world across formats, and rightly so. Performs so consistently and I've always enjoyed watching him play."

It is worth noting that, India and Pakistan could meet five times from now until the end of the World Cup. The two nations are drawn in the same group of Asia Cup along with Nepal and are all but guaranteed a top-two finish considering the former’s inexperience at the highest level. If this is the case, both India and Pakistan will reignite their rivalry in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup. Again, if both teams top the Super Four stage they will meet for the third time in the final of the Asia Cup.

<h2>Virat’s obsession with Pakistan</h2>

Virat though will have bitter-sweet memories of Pakistan's affair in the World Cup, as he remains the only Indian skipper to lose to Pakistan in the grand tournament. Babar’s Pakistan beat India comprehensively in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Virat though had his revenge in the Australian version of the T20 World Cup in 2022 when he led India to a famous win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Both India and Pakistan are set to meet on a rescheduled date of Saturday, October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. India have never lost to Pakistan in the ODI World Cup in seven meetings and will look to maintain the dominating run. They could also meet in the semi-final or the final of the World Cup if a certain set of results are met.

Virat Kohli lauds Babar Azam before Asia Cup, WC showdown, says 'probably top batsman in the world right now'

Former India opener Aakash Chopra has downplayed Sanju Samson’s selection for the upcoming ODI World Cup and the Asia Cup 2023. Chopra, speaking on Friday, August 11 reckons KL Rahul will be the obvious first choice to keep gloves for the big tournaments if he is passed fit. The selectors are expected to announce the squad for the Asia Cup 2023 anytime with Rahul’s inclusion hinging on his fitness.

<h2>Chopra backs Rahul</h2>

"At this point in time, if KL Rahul becomes available, I don't see him [Samson] in the World Cup team. I don't think he will be seen in the Asia Cup team as well,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

KL Rahul’s fitness is set to be a big issue for the selectors in choosing the final squad for the Asia Cup. It is reported that he is yet to be 100 per cent, raising suspense on his inclusion. It is thought, Rahul could be rested for the Asia Cup and will directly get included in the ODI World Cup if he recovers by that time.

However, if this is not the case, the selector's panel led by Ajit Agarkar is keeping a close eye on the backup options. Ishan Kishan is certain to be included in the World Cup squad as a backup wicketkeeper while KL Rahul and Saju Samson face off for the other spot. If Rahul is fit, he is likely to get the spot ahead of Samson as the Rajasthan Royals skipper will have to do without a place in the team.

Samson’s performances with the national team have also been far from convincing having scored 79 runs in four innings during the West Indies tour. His lack of form has been a big critical point and could decide his fate for the national side.

"It is not that he is 32-34 years of age. Sanju is just 28, so there is no tension. You can't talk about the end for a 28- or 29-year-old boy. You have the 2024 T20 World Cup and there is a lot of cricket after that,” Chopra added on the Rajasthan Royals skipper.

The Indian team’s adventure in the ODI World Cup will get underway on Sunday, October 8 against Australia while they will face Pakistan in their opening Asia Cup contest on September 3.
