<p>Pakistan&nbsp;all-rounder Shadab Khan insisted Thursday that his under-performing teammates believe "miracles can happen" as the former champions enter a "do-or-die" battle to rescue their faltering World Cup campaign.</p>

<p>After starting brightly with wins over the Netherlands and Sri Lanka, the 1992 champions have been well beaten by India and Australia before being humiliated by neighbours Afghanistan last time out.</p>

<p>On Friday, they face another test of their resources against free-scoring South Africa who have four wins in five games and have shrugged off their shock loss to the Netherlands.</p>

<p>"We have not played good cricket but have bounced back from such situations."</p>

<p>With four group games to play,&nbsp;Pakistan&nbsp;can still make the semi-finals but there is little margin for error.</p>

<p>However, as well as victory on Friday, they also need to improve their -0.40 net run-rate which could prove to be the tie-breaker in the race for semi-final spots.</p>

<p>"If you have belief, miracles happen," said Shadab, the deputy to skipper Babar Azam.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We have not played like we were playing before the World Cup but from tomorrow we have to start a winning streak."</p>

<p>He added: "When you are in a do-or-die position then I think the pressure is less because you have nothing to lose."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shadab has been one of many in the&nbsp;Pakistan&nbsp;squad who has yet to fully fire.</p>

<p>The 25-year-old leg-spinner has just two wickets at 90.00 and scored 74 runs in three outings.</p>

<p>He was dropped for the match with Australia before being recalled to face Afghanistan.</p>

<p>"When you don't do well the criticism is valid but there are ups and downs in a player's performance so I am confident that I will improve," said Shadab who scored 40 in the losing cause against Afghanistan.</p>

<p>Shadab insists the shock eight-wicket defeat to Afghanistan in a game also played at Chennai is now behind them.</p>

<p>Victory, he insists, will hopefully quieten the criticism which has grown steadily since the eighth loss in eight World Cup meetings to India.</p>

<p>"I always tell the players that if you are going to a tournament like this, you have to cut off from the social media," said Shadab.</p>

<p>"If you perform then everyone says that 'he is doing so well', but when you are not performing then the same people will say 'he is not good enough'."</p>

<p>He added: "It's the mentality that when someone is not in the team, then they are the best and when someone is in the team they are the worst."</p>

<p>Meanwhile, fast bowler Hasan Ali has become the latest&nbsp;Pakistan&nbsp;player to fall ill and will miss Friday's game.</p>

<p>"Hasan is unavailable for the game against South Africa," said a&nbsp;Pakistan&nbsp;Cricket Board statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"He is recovering well and will be given rest to recover ahead of the remaining games.</p>

<h2><strong>Maxwell blasts organisers</strong></h2>

<p>"Well, I had something like that light show happen at Perth Stadium during a Big Bash game," Maxwell said during the post-match presentation.</p>

<p>"And I just felt like it gave me shocking headaches and it takes me a while for my eyes to readjust and I just think it's the dumbest idea for cricketers."</p>

<p>"So I just try and cover up as much as I possibly can and ignore it but it's a horrible, horrible idea. Great for the fans, horrible for the players,” he added.</p>

<p>Maxwell was seen covering his eyes after the light show took center stage during the drinks break in Netherlands’ innings. Though he did not have much time to spend on the field as the Dutch were bowled out for 90 in 21 overs, he did mention the trouble he had readjusting after the light show.&nbsp;This is not the first time he has faced a similar incident with Big Bash cricket also exploring the idea in the past.</p>

<p>Maxwell was on show as he smashed 106 off 44 to put Australia in the ascendency, his knock included 8 sixes and 9 fours and struck at a strike rate of 240. Logan van Beek’s 74/4 would prove to be just a consolation in front of the Aussies bowling attack. This is also the fastest hundred by an Australian in the ODI format while he also ranks fourth in the list for the fastest ODI World Cup hundred, having amassed a 52-ball ton in 2015.</p>

<p>Jos Buttler’s army was tasked to defend 157 after another embarrassing show with the bat in Bengaluru. Derailed by the returning Angelo Matthews and the lethal bowling of Lahiru Kumara, England lost early wickets in their innings to hand Sri Lanka an early advantage. David Willey scalped two wickets during his spell but other senior bowlers did not give competition to hand Sri Lanka an easy win. This also helped them boost their NRR with close competition for the semifinals expected.</p>

<p>Pakistan are having a nightmare of the ODI World Cup 2023 after three consecutive losses including against Afghanistan on October 23. The losses have left Pakistan's campaign in the lurch. Another loss in next four league games can rule them out of the tournament.</p>

<p>Pakistan Director of Men's Cricket Mickey Arthur, however, is confident that the Men in Green can still win the ODI World Cup.</p>

<p>“We said in the change room the other night that we have got six matches to win the World Cup,” Arthur told PCB Digital.</p>

<p>“We have to get on a streak and win six in a row. We know that as a unit, we know that as a team, we have to make sure we get our strategy 100%. We have to make sure that we get our execution 100% and if we do that, there is no reason why we cannot [win the World Cup].”</p>

<p>Before the 2003 debacle, I saw Team India win the NatWest Trophy. For me, 2004 is still vividly etched in my memory&nbsp;for India's historic tour of Pakistan whereas the coming years just added more memories. Thus, becoming a sports journalist has been on my bucket list since then. Obviously, the dream of representing India would have been much better. However, that bus&nbsp;sadly left due to&nbsp;sheer laziness during my college days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Come 2016, I got my first job. I officially entered the sports journalism industry. Growing up watching India win the home ODI World Cup&nbsp;in 2011 motivated me enough to cover the mega event in 2023 -- when the tournament returned to Indian shores. <p>Veteran all-rounder Mathews initially missed out on selection for the tournament but was summoned to India to replace the injured Matheesha Pathirana.</p>

<p>On Thursday he is expected to go straight into the team to face&nbsp;England&nbsp;who have an identical record of one win and three defeats so far.</p>

<p>"We have to play our A game to win against a strong English team," said 36-year-old Mathews.</p>

<p>It is being said that the change in leadership role could take place soon as Pakistan's chances of making it to the semi-finals of the ongoing ODI World Cup look bleak at the moment. The Men in Green are scheduled to tour Australia soon after the World Cup and plans for the 2024 T20 World Cup will be in full swing post the mega event in India. Thus, a new captain can be appointed sooner than later.</p>

<h2><strong>What are Babar's chances of staying captain?</strong></h2>

<p>"Only if Pakistan can stage a miracle and win all their remaining matches to qualify for the semi-finals of this World Cup does Babar stand any chance of surviving as captain and even then he might be relegated to skipper in just the red ball format," one reliable source close to the developments said, as per PTI.</p>

<p>"It is over for Babar because he has been given unbridled power and authority as captain and more importantly he has always had players of his choice in the team. There has never been any attempt to reduce his authority and so he is now being held solely responsible for the Asia Cup and World Cup defeats," the source mentioned.</p>

<p>"The PCB Chairman, Zaka Ashraf ignored the advice of Misbah and Hafeez and some other former players whom he consulted as Babar was adamant he didn't want changes in the team for the World Cup," the source said.</p>

<p>Misbah, former captain and coach, also confirmed on a television channel that he had asked Babar to include mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed in the World Cup squad. However, the current skipper only added him as a travelling reserve.</p>

<p>It is to be noted that lobbies for the possible candidates, including Sarfaraz, Shaheen, Rizwan and Shan Masood have already started their work to get their candidate selected. In a likely scenario, the PCB is contemplating different captains for the red and white-ball formats.</p>

<p>"Sarfaraz might win the nod to captain the Test and ODI sides again while Shaheen may get a chance to be the T20 captain," the source added. Sarfaraz is not part of the Babar-led ODI World Cup squad.</p>

<p>Babar was appointed T20I captain in late 2019 but became the all-format skipper by 2021.</p>

<p>A tired Maxwell, speaking to host broadcasters Star Sports said he was 'cooked' coming to bat at the Arun Jaitley Stadium where the pitch allowed for proper stroke-making.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It feels pretty good. I have been pretty cooked today so I wasn't expecting much but it probably cleared my head a little bit to be able to go out there and play," said Maxwell.</p>

<p>Nicknamed "The Big Show", Maxwell was at his flamboyant best during the innings as he clubbed nine fours and eight sixes en route to the record-breaking milestone. He eventually finished with 106 in 44 balls and guided Australia to a mammoth 400-run total.&nbsp;</p>
