Based on recently revealed political financing reports from the Japanese government, it appears that a number of political organisations are funding Japanese Prime Minister Kishida by misreporting donations made in 2021. The reports come after it was recently discovered that other cabinet members had also been involved in inappropriate contribution management. It is further alleged that Kishida's fund management organisation and his support group also made other errors in declaring the names of donors and the dates.

Delhi's $3 million heist: Two accused arrested from Chhattisgarh, some jewellery recovered

Earthworms, as per new research, are the unsung heroes of food production, with contributions that match Russia, one of the top grain producers globally.

As per the new study evaluating the enormous role earthworms play in food production, these soil-dwelling invertebrate contribute to the harvest of around 140 million tonnes every year.

Fourth-largest producer worldwide

As per the Guardian, in 2022, Russia produced some 150 million tonnes. This year, the nation is expected to produce around 120 million tonnes.

Earthworms's contribution to the production of 140 million tonnes would've made them "the fourth-largest global producer if they were a country", reports the Guardian.

As per the study published in Nature Communications, the worm that is also known as 'night crawler' contributes to 6.5 per cent of all grain harvests globally. This includes crops like rice, maize, wheat and barley.

Furthermore, they also contribute to about 2.3 per cent or around 16 million metric tonnes of legume production. This includes crops like soybean, dry beans, peas, garbanzos, lentils, alfalfa, clover.

Their contribution is highest in the global south, where earthworms contribute to 10 per cent of production in Sub-Saharan Africa, and eight per cent in Latin America and Caribbean.

How do earthworms do this?

Scientists have long been aware of earthworms and their contribution to enhancing plant growth. Charles Darwin, a naturalist, wrote about this way back in 1881. However, this research is the first time that a number has been put to exactly how much they help.

The worms feed on organic materials in the soil, eating both fresh and decaying materials from the plant roots. They then mix their waste into the soil as they move, creating a moist, microbe-rich environment. Furthermore, the tunnels they create bring in oxygen, help drain excess water and create space for plant roots.

As amazing as the results are, the researchers caution that they "do not advocate for the widespread inoculation of earthworms to regions where they are not currently present, as this can have highly undesirable ecological consequences for adjacent natural areas." Instead, they suggest that continued research and promotion of agroecological management practices that and contribute to "long-term sustainability and resilience of agriculture".

The shocking episode that rocked Pakistan's Gulistan-e-Jauhar district of Karachi was the shooting death of Maulana Ziaur Rahman, a well-known cleric connected to Lashkar-e-Taiba, when he was out for his nightly stroll. According to a TOI report, the attackers, who were not recognized, opened fire on their target while riding motorcycles, leaving the Pakistani ISI perplexed. World Cup 2023 Full Squads: Check date, time, teams, venue, schedule and all you need to know

The final Supermoon of 2023, September's full moon, also called Harvest Moon, will begin to rise this Thursday (Sept 28). It is the fourth supermoon of this year and will mark the end of a summer that saw more than one supermoon.

The run of the four consecutive Supermoons began on July 3 with a Full Buck Moon, followed by two Supermoons in August, the Full Sturgeon Moon and the Flue Blue Moon on August 1 and August 30, respectively.

What is a Supermoon?

The Supermoon phenomenon occurs when the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, known as perigee. This happens due to the moon's orbit being an ellipse rather than a perfect circle, resulting in varying distances from the Earth at different times.

According to NASA, the moon will reach the stage of perigee in the evening of Wednesday (Sept 27) around 09:06 pm EDT (6:36 am IST), two days before the Harvest Supermoon.

A retired NASA astrophysist Fred Espanak said that by the time the moon's fully illuminated face is towards Earth, it will be around 361,552 km away from the planet. The moon's average distance from the Earth normally stands at 382,900 km.

When and where to see the Harvest Supermoon?

The Harvest Supermoon will rise between Thursday (Sept 28) night and Friday (Sept 29) morning this week.

The fully illuminated moon in New York City will rise around 6:33 pm EDT (04:03 am IST).

Enthusiasts can go outside and look up at the sky, NASA said. The space agency also provided details on how to place telescopes or binoculars to get the best view.

A planetary parade is also on the cards

Skygazers will also witness a joined parade of three planets - Jupiter, Saturn and the smallest planet in the solar system Mercury - around the same time.

The first planet to visit the final Supermoon will be Saturn on Saturday (Sept 30), which will rise around 5:18 pm EDT (2:48 am IST). Furthermore, Saturn's fellow planet, the largest planet Jupiter will rise at 8:17 pm EDT (5:47 am IST) and will sit left to the Aries constellation. Lastly, Mercury will be the toughest to spot. The planet will rise around 5:30 am EDT (3:00 pm IST).

This celestial event marks the end of the lunar extravaganza for 2023. If you fail to catch a glimpse of the majestic Harvest Supermoon this year, you'll will have to wait a while as the next will occur on 14 September 2024.

Skygazers alert! Harvest Supermoon, the last this year, rises Thursday. Here's when to look up

The demand for blue collar jobs or frontline workers has declined by 17.5 per cent in FY23, according to a report by frontline workforce management platform BetterPlace. About 6.6 million jobs were created in the last fiscal year as compared to eight million in FY22.

The report cited that the decline happened due to cautious hiring by companies amid macroeconomic headwinds. It also said that the decline comes after companies went on a hiring spree in FY22 when businesses reopened after the COVID-19 pandemic.

These frontline jobs include customer-facing roles such as call centre workers, delivery personnel, marketing executives, sales and business development executives and housekeeping staff, among others.

“The macroeconomic headwinds have forced enterprises in India and Southeast Asia to rethink their hiring practices, which resulted in a decline in demand for frontline workers this year,” said Pravin Agarwala, Co-founder and Group CEO at BetterPlace.

The report stated that they are witnessing ‘The Great Variabilisation Trend’. Enterprises in a bid to cut costs are moving away from fixed employees to task-based employees. This has led to an increase in gigification because enterprises are now able to factor in variable demand and manage operational costs.

Hence, the sectors where gig wasn’t very popular are now becoming a norm.

One of the primary reasons behind the decrease in frontline jobs was driven by the e-commerce sector. The dominance of the e-commerce sector, says the report, has been replaced by the logistics and mobility and financial management and IT sectors, which collectively contribute to more than 61 per cent of the new jobs created.

One of the good signs in the report showed that women's participation in the frontline sector has increased by 100 per cent since last year.

“This is largely because of the changing perceptions around working women,” says the report.

But, on the other hand, women's force still remains at six per cent of the entire workforce.

The report showed key trends that with an increase in the country’s headline inflation, the average monthly salary of frontline workers has slipped by 4.5 per cent to Rs 21,700 in FY23 from Rs 22,800 in FY22.

Of this, the average salary for women frontline workers was 20.5 per cent lower than the industry average salary.

The average salary for women frontline workers in logistics & mobility, and manufacturing was 20 per cent and 36 per cent, respectively, higher than the industry average.

With the lower intent to hire, enterprises are now training their existing workers to take on larger roles. The time spent on learning has increased by more than 165 per cent between April 2022 and March 2023, the report showed.

India's job market shifts: 17.5% decrease in demand for blue collar workers

At the United States' main Antarctica base station, cases of sexual harassment have become rampant. Reportedly, many of these cases involved drinking, and starting Sunday, workers at the McMurdo facility will no longer be able to walk into a bar and order a beer.

Boozy rations

As per an AP report, the McMurdo Station will not be entirely dry. Instead, researchers and support staff will be able to buy a weekly ration of alcohol from the station store.

The workers would still be able to visit McMurdo's two main bars, Southern Exposure and Gallagher's, but they'll have to take their own alcohol with them.

According to the report, the current alcohol ration allows McMurdo staff to buy up to 18 beers a week, or three bottles of wine, or 750 millilitre (25 ounces) bottle of spirits or equivalent.

A third venue, the coffee house, used to serve alcohol but is now entirely alcohol-free and will be open to workers any time of day or night.

Increase in sexual harassment cases

Recent months have witnessed a steady increase in the number of sexual misconduct cases at America's main Antarctic base.

As per a National Science Foundation (NSF) report published in 2022, 59 per cent of the women reported a negative experience of harassment or assault while in Antarctica, 72 per cent of women said such behaviour was a problem on ice.

Speaking to AP, many women said "they were left to fend for themselves against sexual harassers."

A previous report by AP also found a pattern, where women working in Antarctica found their claims of sexual harassment minimised by employers.

In many of these cases, alcohol played a role. However, as per NSF, the changes involving alcohol were related to morale and welfare at the base, and had nothing to do with preventing sexual harassment or assault.

However, the NSF said it was instituting several new measures aimed at preventing sexual harassment and assault at the base.

It has published a list of several new measures, including enhanced training, a new survey to collect data and monitor trends, and visits to the ice from experts, all of which will help deal with incidents of sexual assault in Antarctica.

"We will not rest until we are confident that every member of the Antarctic community feels safe and supported," said Karen Marrongelle, the NSF's chief operating officer in a statement.

Amid rampant sexual harassment, US' Antarctica base McMurdo limits alcohol for workers

US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti informed on Thursday (Sep 28) that the country's embassy and other consulates had processed a million visa applications this year.

According to an official release from the US Embassy in India, the mission has already surpassed the total number of cases that were processed in 2022. It added that almost 20 per cent more applications were being processed compared to pre-pandemic 2019 levels.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), the US Embassy said it had surpassed its goals for the year but will not stop here.

"We will not stop here and continue our progress in coming months, to give as many Indian applicants the opportunity to travel to the United States."

Change in strategy

Speaking about the changes implemented to hit such high numbers, Garcetti revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden had requested to move visas faster. Consequently, more personnel were brought on board and an overhaul of the system was implemented.

"PM Modi & President Biden had said let's do a better job of moving faster on visas. So, MEA here approved more bodies in places like Hyderabad, more people who can work on visas, we changed our systems, worked harder and smarter and we have processed a million visa applications this year today officially. We just have to continue to prepare for the future," Garcetti told news agency ANI.

Garcetti added that the high number of visas reflected the growing people-to-people relationship between India and the USA.

"Our partnership with India is one of the United States’ most important bilateral relationships and in fact one of the most important relationships in the world," he said.

"The ties between our people are stronger than ever, and we will continue our record-setting volume of visa work in the coming months to give as many Indian applicants as possible the opportunity to travel to the United States and experience the US-India friendship firsthand.”

Notably, earlier this week, the US Embassy said it had issued a record number of 90,000 visas to Indian students this summer alone. Between June and August, one in four student visas worldwide was issued to an Indian.

In 2022, a record-breaking 125,000 US student visas were issued to Indians last year, surpassing any other nationality.

So, MEA here approved more bodies in places like Hyderabad, more people who can work on visas, we changed our systems, worked harder and smarter and we have processed a million visa applications this year today officially. We just have to continue to prepare for the future," Garcetti told news agency ANI. Also read | Garcetti says India, Pakistan need to resolve issue after US diplomat's secret visit to PoK Garcetti added that the high number of visas reflected the growing people-to-people relationship between India and the USA. "Our partnership with India is one of the United States’ most important bilateral relationships and in fact one of the most important relationships in the world," he said. "The ties between our people are stronger than ever, and we will continue our record-setting volume of visa work in the coming months to give as many Indian applicants as possible the opportunity to travel to the United States and experience the US-India friendship firsthand.” Notably, earlier this week, the US Embassy said it had issued a record number of 90,000 visas to Indian students this summer alone. Between June and August, one in four student visas worldwide was issued to an Indian. In 2022, a record-breaking 125,000 US student visas were issued to Indians last year, surpassing any other nationality. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

India weather update: IMD issues 'yellow' alert for Mumbai, Thane & Raigad till weekend; check details

India's Gujarat became the scene of tragedy on Monday, when a teenager collapsed mid-dance, due to suspected cardiac arrest.

This, as per a Times of India report, is the sixth such sudden death of a healthy individual under 45 years of age in the Kathiawar Peninsula or Saurashtra region.

What happened on Monday?

As per reports, the 19-year-old boy, identified as Vinit Kunvariya, was practicing garba, a traditional Gujarati dance form, for the upcoming Navratri festival season.

Kunvariya, who belonged to Gujarat's Jamnagar, was mid-dance when he suddenly collapsed. The engineering student was rushed to a nearby private hospital. The institution referred him to GG Hospital, a government hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The incident happened around 10:30 pm on Monday (Sep 25).

Dharmesh Rathod, Kuvariya' Garba trainer talking to the press said: "Vinit had been coming to my garba classes for the past two months and was doing well. On Monday too, we were all enjoying ourselves when he suddenly collapsed on the ground. We called a 108 ambulance and took him to the hospital but unfortunately, we could not save him."

Did he have a history of heart ailments?

As per NDTV, speaking to the press, a member of the victim's family said that Vinit did not have any underlying illness and was completely fine.

The case comes to light at a time when India has increasingly seen incidence of young people suddenly collapsing due to cardiac arrests.

What happened exactly?

The Monday episode of Politics Live featured Evans and comedian and commentator Geoff Norcott. During the show, Norcott raised the issue of men's mental health and pointed out the fact that for men under 50 years of age, suicide remains the leading cause of death.

In response, the host mentioned that there is a call by a conservative MP to address issues like these.

Evan then made a comment that seemingly irked Fox and became the basis of his misogynistic comments later.

Arnon Nampa, one of Thailand's most prominent political activists, has been sentenced to a four-year prison term under the country's controversial lese-majeste law or royal defamation law.

The verdict, as per a BBC report, was handed down by a Bangkok court over comments he made during a protest in October 2020.

Questioning the role of monarchy in modern Thailand

BBC reports that Arnon Nampa, a human rights lawyer, was the first activist to publicly call for a national dialogue about the monarchy's role in today's Thailand.

On August 3, 2020, speaking during a student-led protest against the then-military-backed government, Nampa broke a longstanding taboo by advocating for the monarchy to be part of wider reform discussions.

The move aided his rise to prominence, but it came with its own set of risks. In Thailand, something as minor as criticising the royal family on social media has historically resulted in severe penalties. In the past, people have been jailed for up to 30 to 40 years.

Arnon Nampa has been charged 14 times under the lese-majeste and faces multiple charges under other national security laws like the Sedition and the Computer Crimes Act. He has already spent several months in prison, reports BBC.

Public debate and more

The verdict against Arnon comes after months of public debate about the lese-majeste law following the general election in May.

In the elections, the progressive Move Forward party, which advocated for reform, including changes to the lese-majeste law, won the largest number of votes and seats in parliament.

However, the military-appointed Senate used this demand as justification to block the Move Forward from forming a government. Instead, it ultimately formed an alternative coalition consisting of many conservative parties.

The Royal Defamation law

Thailand's lese-majeste law criminalises insults against the monarchy. The enforcement of this law has faced widespread criticism for its harsh penalties, and its enforcement has increased since the military seized power in a 2014 coup.

Defending against lese-majeste charges is exceptionally challenging and often involves closed-door trials. Defendants are reportedly under immense pressure to plead guilty in exchange for reduced sentences.
