Rwanda's President Paul Kagame said he will stand for re-election next year, hoping to extend nearly a quarter of a century in power.

Kagame, who became president in 2000, is eligible to continue in office for another decade after a constitutional amendment in 2015 changed term limits that would have forced him to step down two years later.

He was asked in an interview with the pan-African Jeune Afrique magazine published on Tuesday about his intentions for next year's election.

"I am happy with the confidence that the Rwandans have shown in me. I will always serve them, as much when I can. Yes, I am indeed a candidate," he said.

Kagame won the last election in August 2017 for a seven-year term with 98.63 per cent&nbsp;of the vote, according to the electoral commission.

Kagame has won international acclaim for presiding over peace and economic growth since the end of the 1994 genocide, in which an estimated 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed.

But he has faced mounting criticism for what human rights groups say are the suppression of political opposition and the muzzling of independent media.

Kagame has rejected these accusations.

The United States in 2015 criticised the constitutional change, saying Kagame should step down when his term ended and allow a new generation of leaders to come through.

In the interview with Jeune Afrique, Kagame said he was not bothered by criticism from Western countries.

"People are supposed to be independent and should be allowed to organise themselves as they wish," he said.

Nine years after its wildly successful Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), aka Mangalyaan, India is preparing to send another spacecraft to the red planet.

This was reported by Hindustan Times (HT) citing officials from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The Mars Orbiter Mission-2 or MOM-2 would reportedly carry four payloads. As per documents assessed by the news outlet, these payloads would contain scientific instruments that will study aspects of the barren planet, including interplanetary dust, the Martian atmosphere and the environment.

According to the mission document, payloads will include: a Mars Orbit Dust Experiment (MODEX), a Radio Occultation (RO) experiment, an Energetic Ion Spectrometer (EIS) and a Langmuir Probe and Electric Field Experiment (LPEX).

Speaking on condition of anonymity, an ISRO official told HT that "all of these payloads are in different stages of development."

<h2>Functions of individual payloads</h2>

Of the payloads, MODEX will help understand the origin, abundance, distribution, and flux at high altitudes on Mars.

"There are no measurements of Interplanetary Dust Particles (IDPs) at Mars. The instrument can detect particles of size from a few hundred nm to few µm, travelling at hypervelocity (&gt; 1 km/s). The outcomes can help explain the dust flux at Mars, whether there is any ring (as hypothesized) around Mars and also confirm whether the dust is interplanetary or coming from Phobos or Deimos (the two moons of Mars). The study of dust can help explain the RO experiment results," said the mission document.

Radio Occultation instrument will measure neutral and electron density profiles, reports HT. It will help understand the behaviour of the planet's atmosphere.

Energetic Ion Spectrometer (EIS) will help the space agency characterise solar energy and supra-thermal solar wind particles in the Martian environment. This particular instrument will also aid in our understanding of the red planet's loss of its atmosphere&nbsp;aeons ago.

Finally, the Langmuir Probe and Electric Field Experiment (LPEX) will enable the measurement of electron number density, electron temperature and electric field waves — which will give a better picture of the plasma environment on Mars.

The previous Mangalyaan mission was India's first interplanetary mission, which made the nation only the fourth country to achieve Mars orbit, after Russia's ROSCOSMOS, the US's NASA and the European Space Agency.

This data paints a stark picture of diabetes awareness and diagnosis worldwide. It also revealed that half of those who are diagnosed with diabetes do not receive treatment.

About three in four people live in low and middle-income countries, where access to healthcare services can be limited.

Sasha Korogodski, the lead researcher of the report, pointed out that while over 530 companies worldwide specialise in diabetes diagnostics, only 33 are located in the regions most affected by undiagnosed cases — Africa, south-east Asia and the western Pacific.&nbsp;

"Limited healthcare infrastructure, including a shortage of healthcare professionals and diagnostic equipment, can impede the early diagnosis of diabetes," said Korogodski.

<h2>The data</h2>

This research looks at over 2,800 companies, 1,500 investors, and 80 research and development hubs devoted to diabetes to evaluate the global impact of this condition.

Caroline Mbindyo, CEO of Amref Health Innovations, part of the NGO Amref Health Africa, emphasised that half of all Africans lack access to essential healthcare.&nbsp;

For many in remote areas, reaching a healthcare facility can take hours or even days, said Mbindyo.

Despite substantial investments, diabetes remains a significant contributor to global mortality. In 2021, nearly 7 million deaths worldwide were attributed to diabetes, with over $970 billion spent on treatment. It also found that most of the organisations involved in diabetes research and care — over 70 companies, or 55 per cent globally&nbsp; — are located in the United States.

The service as per Reuters was led by a priest, the sermon at times was interrupted by wails of grieving women.

Expressing unity in sorrow, the priest as per the report didn't hold back in criticising officials for their "corruption" and "favouritism".

On Tuesday night, in Iraq's biggest Christian town, a fire tore through a wedding, killing at least 100 guests.&nbsp;

The bride and the groom survived with some injuries, but their "minor burns" far outweighed the crushing blow of losing so many family members, said Jamil al-Jamil, a friend of the couple, while talking to AFP.

"The bride lost her whole family – three brothers, all of her uncles and her young cousins. The groom lost his mother," he added.

In the fire, at least 150 people were injured, many suffered burns, others had&nbsp;injuries from a stampede that happened after the fire, and others suffered from smoke inhalation.

As per the study published in Nature Communications, the worm that is also known as 'night crawler' contributes to 6.5 per cent of all grain harvests globally. This includes crops like rice, maize, wheat and barley.

Furthermore, they also contribute to about 2.3 per cent or around 16 million metric tonnes of legume production. This includes crops like soybean, dry beans, peas, garbanzos, lentils, alfalfa, clover.

Their contribution is highest in the global south, where earthworms contribute to 10 per cent of production in Sub-Saharan Africa, and eight per cent in Latin America and Caribbean.

<h2>How do earthworms do this?</h2>

Scientists have long been aware of earthworms and their contribution to enhancing plant growth. Charles Darwin, a naturalist, wrote about this way back in 1881. However, this research is the first time that a number has been put to exactly how much they help.

The worms feed on organic materials in the soil, eating both fresh and decaying materials from the plant roots. They then mix their waste into the soil as they move, creating a moist, microbe-rich environment. Furthermore, the tunnels they create bring in oxygen, help drain excess water and create&nbsp;space for plant roots.

As amazing as the results are, the researchers caution that they "do not advocate for the widespread inoculation of earthworms to regions where they are not currently present, as this can have highly undesirable ecological consequences for adjacent natural areas." Instead, they suggest that continued research and promotion of agroecological management practices that and contribute to "long-term sustainability and resilience of agriculture".

The crocodilian enrichment coordinator Savannah Boan said the gator had gained 3 grams or 0.01 ounces since its rescue. She added that the&nbsp; animal&nbsp;was possibly injured by a boat propeller and survived.

CEO Mark McHugh in the video said that they chose the name Jawlene from a list of names submitted by parkgoers and fans of the viral reptile.

The CEO further shared a milestone achieved by the gator by eating two mice completely on her own.

The gator continues to receive treatment in isolation from the other animals.&nbsp;

Park Director Mike Hileman said that the gator is living large. "We've moved her into her own little bungalow."

The Gatorland took the small gator on September 16&nbsp;after it was seen with its upper jaw cut off at Wilson’s Landing Park in Sanford in late August, and photos of it circulated across social media platforms.

The video shared on Facebook read, "Gatorland Global rescues alligators and lets them live out their lives in our giant lakes. Gatorland just received a new alligator from a lake near Sanford. This little female gator lost her complete upper jaw from another gator fight or possibly from a boat propeller. &nbsp;She had basically no chance of surviving in the wild with such a severe injury. &nbsp;Here at Gatorland, our dedicated team will give her lots of loving care to live out her life in Alligator Paradise. &nbsp;#gatorland #alligator #rescue."

The final Supermoon of 2023, September's full moon, also called Harvest Moon, will begin to rise this Thursday (Sept 28). It is the fourth supermoon of this year and will mark the end of a summer that saw more than one&nbsp;supermoon.&nbsp;

The run of the four consecutive Supermoons began on July 3 with a Full Buck Moon, followed by two Supermoons in August, the Full Sturgeon Moon and the Flue Blue Moon on August&nbsp;1 and August&nbsp;30, respectively.&nbsp;

What is a Supermoon?

The Supermoon phenomenon occurs when the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, known as perigee. This happens due to the moon's orbit being an ellipse rather than a perfect circle, resulting in varying distances from the Earth at different times.

According to NASA, the moon will reach the stage of perigee in the evening of Wednesday (Sept 27) around 09:06 pm EDT (6:36 am IST), two days before the Harvest Supermoon.&nbsp;

A retired NASA astrophysist Fred Espanak said that by the time the moon's fully illuminated face is towards Earth, it will be around 361,552 km away from the planet. The&nbsp;moon's average distance from the Earth&nbsp;normally stands at 382,900 km.

When and where to see the Harvest Supermoon?

The Harvest Supermoon will rise between Thursday (Sept 28) night and Friday (Sept 29) morning this week.&nbsp;

The fully illuminated moon in New York City will rise around 6:33 pm EDT (04:03 am IST).&nbsp;

Enthusiasts can go outside and look up at the sky, NASA said. The space agency also provided details on how to place&nbsp;telescopes or binoculars to get the best view.

A planetary parade is also on the cards

Skygazers will also witness a joined parade of three planets - Jupiter, Saturn and the smallest planet in the solar system Mercury - around the same time.

The first planet to visit the final Supermoon will be Saturn on Saturday (Sept 30), which will rise around 5:18 pm EDT (2:48 am IST). Furthermore, Saturn's fellow planet, the largest planet Jupiter will rise at 8:17 pm EDT (5:47 am IST) and will sit left to the Aries constellation. Lastly, Mercury will be the toughest to spot. The planet will rise around 5:30 am EDT (3:00 pm IST).&nbsp;

This celestial event marks the end of the lunar extravaganza for 2023. If you fail to catch a glimpse of the majestic&nbsp;Harvest Supermoon this year, you'll will have to wait a while as the next will occur on 14 September 2024.&nbsp;

“The macroeconomic headwinds have forced enterprises in India and Southeast Asia to rethink their hiring practices, which resulted in a decline in demand for frontline workers this year,” said Pravin Agarwala, Co-founder and Group CEO at BetterPlace.

The report stated that they are witnessing ‘The Great Variabilisation Trend’. Enterprises in a bid to cut costs are moving away from fixed employees to task-based employees. This has led to an increase in gigification because enterprises are now able to factor in variable demand and manage operational costs.

Hence, the sectors where gig wasn’t very popular are now becoming a norm.

One of the primary reasons behind the decrease in frontline jobs was driven by the e-commerce sector. The dominance of the e-commerce sector, says the report, has been replaced by the logistics and mobility and financial management and IT sectors, which collectively contribute to more than 61 per cent of the new jobs created.

One of the good signs in the report showed that women's participation in the frontline sector has increased by 100 per cent since last year.

“This is largely because of the changing perceptions around working women,” says the report.

But, on the other hand, women's force still remains at six per cent of the entire workforce.

The report showed key trends that with an increase in the country’s headline inflation, the average monthly salary of frontline workers has slipped by 4.5 per cent to Rs 21,700 in FY23 from Rs 22,800 in FY22.

Of this, the average salary for women frontline workers was 20.5 per cent lower than the industry average salary.

The average salary for women frontline workers in logistics &amp; mobility, and manufacturing was 20 per cent and 36 per cent, respectively, higher than the industry average.

With the lower intent to hire, enterprises are now training their existing workers to take on larger roles. The time spent on learning has increased by more than 165 per cent between April 2022 and March 2023, the report showed.

India's job market shifts: 17.5% decrease in demand for blue collar workers

The workers would still be able to visit McMurdo's two main bars, Southern Exposure and Gallagher's, but they'll have to take their own alcohol with them.

According to the report, the current alcohol ration allows McMurdo staff to buy up to 18 beers a week, or three bottles of wine, or 750 millilitre (25 ounces) bottle of spirits or equivalent.

A third venue, the coffee house, used to serve alcohol but is now entirely alcohol-free and will be open to workers any time of day or night.

<h2>Increase in sexual harassment cases</h2>

Recent months have witnessed a steady increase in the number of sexual misconduct cases at America's main Antarctic base.&nbsp;

As per a National Science Foundation (NSF) report published in 2022, 59 per cent of the women reported a negative experience of harassment or assault while in Antarctica,&nbsp;72 per cent of women said such behaviour was a problem on ice.

Speaking to AP, many women said&nbsp;"they were left to fend for themselves against sexual harassers."

A previous report by AP also found a pattern, where women working in Antarctica found their claims of sexual harassment minimised by employers.

In many of these cases, alcohol played a role. However, as per NSF, the changes involving alcohol were related to morale and welfare at the base, and had nothing to do with preventing sexual harassment or assault.

However, the NSF said it was instituting several new measures aimed at preventing sexual harassment and assault at the base.&nbsp;

It has published a list of several new measures, including enhanced training, a new survey to collect data and monitor trends, and visits to the ice from experts, all of which will help deal with incidents of sexual assault in Antarctica.

"We will not rest until we are confident that every member of the Antarctic community feels safe and supported," said Karen Marrongelle, the NSF's chief operating officer in a statement.

<h2>What happened on Monday?</h2>

As per reports, the 19-year-old boy, identified as Vinit Kunvariya, was practicing garba, a traditional Gujarati dance form, for the upcoming Navratri festival season.

Kunvariya, who belonged to Gujarat's Jamnagar, was mid-dance when he suddenly collapsed. The engineering student was rushed to a nearby private hospital. The institution referred him to GG Hospital, a government hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The incident happened around 10:30 pm on Monday (Sep 25).

Dharmesh Rathod, Kuvariya' Garba trainer talking to the press said: "Vinit had been coming to my garba classes for the past two months and was doing well. On Monday too, we were all enjoying ourselves when he suddenly collapsed on the ground. We called a 108 ambulance and took him to the hospital but unfortunately, we could not save him."

<h2>Did he have a history of heart ailments?</h2>

As per NDTV, speaking to the press, a member of the victim's family said that Vinit did not have any underlying illness and was completely fine.

The case comes to light at a time when India has increasingly seen incidence&nbsp;of young people suddenly collapsing due to cardiac arrests.&nbsp;

British Television news channel GB News has suspended&nbsp;its hosts Laurence Fox and Dan Wootton over sexist, misogynistic comments&nbsp;made about a female reporter.

During a live interview on another GB News programme, 'Dan Wootton Tonight', Fox asked what "self-respecting man" would "climb into bed" with PoliticsJOE reporter Ava Evans.&nbsp;

These comments were reportedly a reaction to Evans' earlier statement against calls for a minister of men.

Taking to X, GB News announced that it has "formally suspended" Fox while the "continue our investigation into comments he made on the channel last night."

As per the statement, the suspension is effective immediately and Laurence Fox has been taken off-air.

The Monday episode of Politics Live featured Evans and comedian and commentator Geoff Norcott. During the show, Norcott raised the issue of men's mental health and pointed out the fact that for men under 50 years of age, suicide remains the leading cause of death.

In response, the host mentioned that there is a call by a conservative MP to address issues like these.

Evan then made a comment that seemingly irked Fox and became the basis of his misogynistic comments later.

Later on X, she accepted that her comments may have been "a little rash".

On August 3, 2020, speaking during a student-led protest against the then-military-backed government, Nampa broke a longstanding taboo by advocating for the monarchy to be part of wider reform discussions.

The move aided his rise to prominence, but it came with its own set of risks. In Thailand, something as minor&nbsp;as criticising the royal family on social media has historically resulted in severe penalties. In the past, people have been jailed for up to 30 to 40 years.

Arnon Nampa has been charged 14 times under the lese-majeste and faces multiple charges under other national security laws like the Sedition and the Computer Crimes Act. He has already spent several months in prison, reports BBC.

<h2>Public debate and more</h2>

The verdict against Arnon comes after months of public debate about the lese-majeste law following the general election in May.&nbsp;

In the elections, the progressive Move Forward party, which advocated for reform, including changes to the lese-majeste law, won the largest number of votes and seats in parliament.&nbsp;

However, the military-appointed Senate used this demand as justification to block the Move Forward from forming a government. Instead, it ultimately formed an alternative coalition consisting of many conservative parties.

<h2>The Royal Defamation law</h2>

Thailand's lese-majeste law criminalises insults against the monarchy. The enforcement of this law has faced widespread criticism for its harsh penalties, and its enforcement has increased since the military seized power in a 2014 coup.

In a statement to The Irish Times, Gymnastics Ireland said it immediately engaged with the girl's parents after receiving the complaint. It also said that this was done "in addition to immediately engaging with the official in question."

"Initially we attempted to address the matter through the informal process of our discipline and complaints policy," said Gymnastics Ireland.

"However, following a series of communications with the parents they informed Gymnastics Ireland that they would not be engaging in the process and were seeking legal advice," it added.

The French watchdog said&nbsp;accredited labs found absorption of electromagnetic energy by the body at 5.74 watts per kilogramme during tests when the smartphone was being&nbsp;held in the hand or kept in the&nbsp;pocket. Interestingly, the European standard for the&nbsp;specific absorption rate is 4.0 watts per kilogramme in such tests.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Apple is expected to respond within two weeks.&nbsp;If they fail to do so, I am prepared to order a recall of all iPhones 12 in circulation. The rule is the same for everyone, including the digital giants."

Initially, Apple defended itself saying the iPhone 12 model, launched in 2020, was certified by&nbsp;multiple international bodies as compliant with global radiation standards. The company said it will contest the findings by the French watchdog, having previously submitted&nbsp;several Apple and third-party lab results proving&nbsp;the phone's compliance.&nbsp;

However, the company soon announced it would be complying with the rules and issuing the software update.&nbsp;

"We will issue a software update for users in France to accommodate the protocol used by French regulators. We look forward to iPhone 12 continuing to be available in France," Apple said in a statement.

Now, a new "gear change" by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will force convicted rapists to serve the duration of their full sentences. This, as per Daily Mail, is likely to be part of an upcoming speech by Sunak.

<h2>The 'real Rishi'</h2>

As per Daily Mail, the move is part of a wider 'gear change' by Number 10 Downing Street, which aims to reveal the 'real Rishi' ahead of the general elections next year.

Part of this strategy was last Wednesday's 'green gamble' hitting the brakes on the race to net zero.

At the time, announcing the move, Sunak said it was "the first in a series of long-term decisions to deliver change".

As per the report, UK Ministry of Justice figures show that in the seven years — since 2016, 112 sex offenders released early have gone on to commit serious offences.

Notorious cases include that of Ashley Shuck, a rapist who in 2017 was convicted of raping ad kidnapping an elderly woman&nbsp;and sexually assaulting another woman, just weeks after he was released halfway through a previous eight-year sentence for raping an 18-year-old.

Last year, the Police, Crime and Courts Act automatically ended the early release for sexual offences that carry the maximum sentences. Additionally, those serving a sentence of four years or more are now required to serve at least two-thirds of their sentence.

I2U2 announces joint space venture that'll work for 'greater good of humanity'

Obesity is increasing in the United States, according to new data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As per the data released on Thursday (September 21st) obesity is becoming more common in a growing number of US states.&nbsp;

The survey by the CDC and state health departments revealed that of the 50 US states, 22 have at least 35 per cent of adults dealing with obesity. All states have obesity rates of at least 20 per cent.

<h2>Increasing obesity</h2>

Data from the Behavioural Risk Factor Surveillance System shows that in 2021, only 19 states had at least 35 per cent of adults with obesity. New data from 2022 shows this number is up, and now 22 states have reported at least 35 per cent of adults with obesity.

The number was highest in Louisiana, Oklahoma and West Virginia, where more than 40 per cent of the adults had obesity.&nbsp;

Furthermore, the data also found "notable differences" in the prevalence of obesity by race and ethnicity.

Among black adults, obesity was reported by around 35 per cent of adults in 38 states. At least 35 per cent of Hispanic adults in 32 states were found to be obese.&nbsp;

The figure did not exceed 35 per cent among Asian adults in any state. While for white adults, the 35 per cent metric was reached in 14 states.

The report considers adults with a body mass index of 30 and above as obese. The data, as per a CNN report, is based on self-reported measurements of height and weight.

The survey by the CDC and state health departments revealed that of the 50 US states, 22 have at least 35 per cent of adults dealing with obesity. All states have obesity rates of at least 20 per cent. Increasing obesity Data from the Behavioural Risk Factor Surveillance System shows that in 2021, only 19 states had at least 35 per cent of adults with obesity. New data from 2022 shows this number is up, and now 22 states have reported at least 35 per cent of adults with obesity. Region-wise, overall, the prevalence of obesity was highest in the Midwest and the South, with about 36 per cent. On the other hand, the Northeast and the West had about 30 per cent of obese adults. Furthermore, the data also found "notable differences" in the prevalence of obesity by race and ethnicity. Among black adults, obesity was reported by around 35 per cent of adults in 38 states. At least 35 per cent of Hispanic adults in 32 states were found to be obese. The figure did not exceed 35 per cent among Asian adults in any state. While for white adults, the 35 per cent metric was reached in 14 states. How did the report measure obesity? The report considers adults with a body mass index of 30 and above as obese.
