Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei on Thursday (Mar 12) issued his first statement since the start of the war in West Asia. His remarks came amid conflicting reports on his health after he was injured in the strikes launched by the US and Israel that also killed his father, former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, on February 28. However, his speech raised even more questions when the leader did not appear on camera himself, but his speech was read by a news anchor on Iranian state media, raising further doubts about his condition. In the statement, Mojtaba Khamenei honoured his father, vowed revenge against the US and Israel. He also expressed willingness to remain friends with the neighbouring nations, which Iran has been repeatedly attacking, but demanded that they “shut down” US bases in their territory that are being used to launch strikes on Iran. He suggested that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed.<h2>‘Your servant’</h2>Mojtaba Khamenei, in his first speech, called himself a “servant” of Iranians. “I, Seyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, your servant, along with you and through the Islamic Republic Broadcasting, became aware of the result of the vote of the esteemed Assembly of Experts,” he said. “For me, leaning upon a place that has been the seat of two great leaders, the great Khomeini and the martyred Khamenei, is a difficult task.”Mojtaba was referring to Iran’s first supreme leader, Ruhollah Khomeini, who served from 1979 until his death in 1989, and his father Ali Khamenei, who had been the supreme leader since 1989 until his death in US-Israeli strikes.<h2>Death of Ali Khamenei</h2>On the death of the former supreme leader of Iran, Khamenei said, “I had the honour of visiting their body after martyrdom; what I saw was a mountain of steadfastness, and I heard that he had clenched the fist of his healthy hand.”“The insight and wisdom of the great Iranian nation in the recent event, along with its steadfastness, courage, and presence, compelled friends to admiration and foes to astonishment. It was you, the people, who led the country and guaranteed its authority,” Khamenei added. If that supreme blessing was taken from us, in its place, the Ammar-like presence of the Iranian nation was once again bestowed upon this system.”<h2>Strait of Hormuz</h2>Mojtaba Khamenei said that “the leverage of blocking the Strait of Hormuz must certainly continue to be used. Studies have been conducted regarding the opening of additional fronts in areas where the enemy has negligible experience and would be highly vulnerable, and their activation will be carried out if the state of war persists and in accordance with the observance of interests.”The Strait of Hormuz is the only maritime outlet for ports located in the Persian Gulf. Its blockage has significantly affected global energy supply, triggering a sharp rise in oil prices. In recent days, several vessels have been targeted while passing through the strait. Iran has warned that any vessel attempting to pass could be targeted and set on fire, with several oil tankers being hit in recent days.<h2>Khamenei vows vengence</h2>“I assure everyone that we will not forgo vengeance for the blood of your martyrs. The vengeance we have in mind is not limited to the martyrdom of the great leader of the Revolution; rather, every member of the nation who is martyred by the enemy constitutes an independent subject in the file of vengeance,” Khamenei said.<h2>Minab school strike</h2>He also slammed the US over deadly strike that hit Minab school, saying, “Only a limited amount of blood revenge for the martyrs has so far taken concrete form, but until it is fully achieved, this case will remain on top of all other cases. The crime that the enemy has deliberately committed regarding the Minab Tayyibah Tree School and some similar cases holds a special status in this reckoning.”<h2>Warning to Gulf nations</h2>Khamenei warned Gulf nations that are aiding the United States and Israel for carrying out strikes against Iran. “The countries of the region must clarify their stance regarding the aggressors against our dear homeland and the killers of our people. I recommend that they shut down those bases as soon as possible, for they must surely have realised by now that America’s claim of establishing security and peace has been nothing but a lie,” he said.He reiterated that the Islamic republic is “fully prepared for unity and warm, cordial mutual relations with all its neighbors” despite the threats.<h2>Khamenei praises Hezbollah</h2>Mojtaba Khamenei also praised Hezbollah for supporting Iran and striking Israel and US targets. “The companionship of the components of the Resistance Front with one another shortens the path to deliverance from the Zionist affliction. Brave and faithful Yemen has not ceased defending the oppressed people of Gaza, Hezbollah the devoted has come to the aid of the Islamic Republic despite all obstacles, and the Iraqi resistance too has boldly pursued the same path,” he said.

Death of Ali Khamenei On the death of the former supreme leader of Iran, Khamenei said, “I had the honour of visiting their body after martyrdom; what I saw was a mountain of steadfastness, and I heard that he had clenched the fist of his healthy hand.” “The insight and wisdom of the great Iranian nation in the recent event, along with its steadfastness, courage, and presence, compelled friends to admiration and foes to astonishment. It was you, the people, who led the country and guaranteed its authority,” Khamenei added. If that supreme blessing was taken from us, in its place, the Ammar-like presence of the Iranian nation was once again bestowed upon this system.” Strait of Hormuz Mojtaba Khamenei said that “the leverage of blocking the Strait of Hormuz must certainly continue to be used. Studies have been conducted regarding the opening of additional fronts in areas where the enemy has negligible experience and would be highly vulnerable, and their activation will be carried out if the state of war persists and in accordance with the observance of interests.” The Strait of Hormuz is the only maritime outlet for ports located in the Persian Gulf. Its blockage has significantly affected global energy supply, triggering a sharp rise in oil prices. In recent days, several vessels have been targeted while passing through the strait. Iran has warned that any vessel attempting to pass could be targeted and set on fire, with several oil tankers being hit in recent days. Khamenei vows vengence “I assure everyone that we will not forgo vengeance for the blood of your martyrs. The vengeance we have in mind is not limited to the martyrdom of the great leader of the Revolution; rather, every member of the nation who is martyred by the enemy constitutes an independent subject in the file of vengeance,” Khamenei said. Minab school strike He also slammed the US over deadly strike that hit Minab school, saying, “Only a limited amount of blood revenge for the martyrs has so far taken concrete form, but until it is fully achieved, this case will remain on top of all other cases. The crime that the enemy has deliberately committed regarding the Minab Tayyibah Tree School and some similar cases holds a special status in this reckoning.” Warning to Gulf nations Khamenei warned Gulf nations that are aiding the United States and Israel for carrying out strikes against Iran. “The countries of the region must clarify their stance regarding the aggressors against our dear homeland and the killers of our people. I recommend that they shut down those bases as soon as possible, for they must surely have realised by now that America’s claim of establishing security and peace has been nothing but a lie,” he said. He reiterated that the Islamic republic is “fully prepared for unity and warm, cordial mutual relations with all its neighbors” despite the threats. Khamenei praises Hezbollah Mojtaba Khamenei also praised Hezbollah for supporting Iran and striking Israel and US targets.

Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei delivered a fiery first address amid the ongoing war, touching on several flashpoints shaping the conflict. Here are 7 key takeaways from his speech.

From Strait of Hormuz to Minab school strike: 7 Key takeaways from Mojtaba Khamenei’s vengeful first speech

Mojtaba Khamenei, in his first public message since being chosen as Iran’s Supreme Leader, vowed revenge for those killed in the ongoing Israel–US attacks that began on February 28. He called for continued pressure on the Strait of Hormuz, warned neighbouring countries hosting US bases, and urged national unity. In the message, he also highlighted the Quds Day protests, calling for strong public participation and framing the rallies as a demonstration of resolve against Iran’s enemies. There will be blood on Quds Day? Why this occasion in Islamic Republic calendar matters more this year amid Iran war

The war in West Asia is spiraling out of control. Cluster bombs are falling, rockets are being fired in waves as the conflict enters its thirteenth day. U.S. President Donald Trump has blamed his own advisers for the decision that ignited the war, while Iran’s new leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, warns American bases across the region could face direct attack.

Iran’s state media broadcast a written message from newly appointed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, marking his first public statement since succeeding his late father amid the ongoing US‑Israel‑Iran war. The message, read out on state television rather than delivered in person, urged unity at home and reaffirmed Iran’s stance in the conflict.

Just hours before Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, delivered his first official address, a section of the western media claimed that he is in a coma and lost one leg. The Sun, which first reported it, quoting a source in Tehran, and the UK media, which amplified it, said that it had gained information from the hospital where he is reportedly being treated after being injured in an airstrike. However, soon after, Iran released an audio message by the Ayatollah in which he talked about the attack by the US and Israel, the Minab school massacre, the Gulf countries under attack and the death of his family members. Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/-strait-of-hormuz-should-be-continued-as-a-tool-to-pressure-enemy-iran-s-supreme-leader-mojtaba-khamenei-s-first-statement-1773321492482">'Strait of Hormuz closure should be continued as a tool to pressure enemy': Iran's Supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei's first statement</a><h2>What did Mojtaba Khamenei say in his first message?</h2>On Thursday, Mojtaba said Iran will not hesitate to take revenge for the crimes committed by the enemy, especially the Minab school massacre, which killed 168 girls. Hours before Iran's new Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei shared his first message, UK media reported he is in a coma

Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani warned the entire Middle East will "go dark" if the United State try to destroy the power generation capacity of Iran. He confirmed that the darkness creates favourable conditions for "hunting American soldiers." "Trump has said, 'We can take apart Iran's electric capacity within one hour, but we have not done it.' Well, if they do that, the whole region will go dark in less than half an hour, and darkness provides ample opportunity to hunt down US servicemen running for safety," Ali said in a post on X.

The statement of Ali Larijani came days after the American leader threatened to destroy the power generation capacity of Iran within an hour, but expressed hope that this would not be necessary.<h3>Iran's supreme leader says Strait of Hormuz must remain closed</h3>Meanwhile, Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, stated that the Strait of Hormuz must remain closed, disobeying the order of President Donald Trump and calls from global markets to reopen the important oil trade route. “Certainly, the lever of blocking the Strait of Hormuz should still be used,” Khamenei said, based on a quote from his first message to the public, the semiofficial Tasnim news agency reported. Iran has also vowed to target any US, Israeli or allied ship that attempts to cross the Strait of Hormuz, which is considered one-fifth of the world’s oil passage annually. The disruption due to war and the blockade of the strait led to an upsurge in oil prices.&nbsp;Oil prices surged by more than 7 per cent on Thursday after the International Energy Agency warned that the US–Israel war on Iran was “creating the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market.”&nbsp; After remarks by Ali Khamenei, the price of international Brent crude oil climbed above $100 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate rose past $95. The shockwaves from the oil market disruption also hit equities, sending stocks lower. At the opening bell, the S&amp;P 500 dropped more than 1 per cent, the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.3 per cent, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average slid by about 570 points.&nbsp;US crude prices have now climbed over 40 per cent since the war began, pushing retail fuel costs higher. Since March 1, gasoline prices have increased by nearly 70 cents to reach $3.59 per gallon on Thursday, according to GasBuddy. &nbsp; Also read:<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/-strait-of-hormuz-should-be-continued-as-a-tool-to-pressure-enemy-iran-s-supreme-leader-mojtaba-khamenei-s-first-statement-1773321492482"> 'Strait of Hormuz closure should be continued as a tool to pressure enemy': Iran's Supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei's first statement</a>

'Middle East will go dark': Iran warns US over threat to destroy power grid

Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, was reportedly not favoured by his father, Ali Khamenei, to lead the Islamic Republic, a US media report claimed citing an Iranian exile group. Ali Khamenei, who was killed in US-Israeli joint airstrikes, apparently mentioned this in his will. The report in New York Post came after Mojtaba was selected by Iran’s Assembly of Experts as the country’s new Supreme Leader on Sunday (Mar 8), marking the first time the position passed from father to son in the Islamic Republic’s history. The New York Post report cited Khosro Isfahani, a research director for the opposition group National Union for Democracy in Iran (NUFDI).“In Khamenei’s will, he explicitly asked Mojtaba not to be named as successor,” claimed Isfahani, who represents the political advocacy organisation of the Iranian diaspora headquartered in Washington.“Mojtaba is an impotent young cleric who has achieved nothing in terms of political life,” Isfahani told the Post, adding that the late supreme leader felt that his son lacked the experience or capability to lead Iran. “All these years, he has been nothing without his father’s name.”Multiple reports suggested that Mojtaba Khamenei’s selection was forced by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Several clerics opposed the move and boycotted the meeting where his selection was made, The Post report claimed.“The Assembly of Experts that was supposed to pick the replacement of Khamenei didn’t vote for Mojtaba,” Isfahani claimed. “There was a lot of pushback against him, but under pressure from the IRGC, he was named as the successor.”<h2>Was Khamenei opposed to Mojtaba taking over?</h2>In Iran, the selection of the supreme leader through a hereditary line is happening for the first time. The leader, decided by the Assembly of Experts, must have high clerical credentials, management experience and broad public recognition. In the past, Ali Khamenei himself had publicly opposed dynastic succession. A report citing an Iranian exile group claims that Ali Khamenei, in his will, did not favour his son Mojtaba to succeed him as Iran's supreme leader. Mojtaba was selected under IRGC pressure after the US-Israel strikes killed Ali Khamenei, claimed a researcher from the opposition group.

The New York Post report cited Khosro Isfahani, a research director for the opposition group National Union for Democracy in Iran (NUFDI). “In Khamenei’s will, he explicitly asked Mojtaba not to be named as successor,” claimed Isfahani, who represents the political advocacy organisation of the Iranian diaspora headquartered in Washington. “Mojtaba is an impotent young cleric who has achieved nothing in terms of political life,” Isfahani told the Post, adding that the late supreme leader felt that his son lacked the experience or capability to lead Iran. “All these years, he has been nothing without his father’s name.” Multiple reports suggested that Mojtaba Khamenei’s selection was forced by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Several clerics opposed the move and boycotted the meeting where his selection was made, The Post report claimed. “The Assembly of Experts that was supposed to pick the replacement of Khamenei didn’t vote for Mojtaba,” Isfahani claimed. “There was a lot of pushback against him, but under pressure from the IRGC, he was named as the successor.” Was Khamenei opposed to Mojtaba taking over? In Iran, the selection of the supreme leader through a hereditary line is happening for the first time. The leader, decided by the Assembly of Experts, must have high clerical credentials, management experience and broad public recognition. In the past, Ali Khamenei himself had publicly opposed dynastic succession. In 2025, he had reportedly identified three senior clerics as contingency options, which did not include Mojtaba, who is considered to have a low clerical rank and less formal governance experience compared with other senior leaders within the system. Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei ‘safe and sound’ despite war injuries, says President Pezeshkian's son

Most analysts believe Mojtaba Khamenei is likely to continue the ideological course established by his father. The Islamic Republic has long been grounded in principles such as resistance to Western influence, strong religious authority in governance, and the pursuit of strategic power across the region. These core foundations are not expected to change quickly. For the moment, many experts agree that Mojtaba Khamenei is unlikely to introduce dramatic changes to Iran’s political system in the near term. Instead, his leadership will likely operate within the institutional framework developed over the past four decades.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/middle-east-conflict-cancels-sri-lanka-vs-afghanistan-cricket-series-1773154803093/embed">https://www.wionews.com/videos/middle-east-conflict-cancels-sri-lanka-vs-afghanistan-cricket-series-1773154803093/embed</a>&nbsp;However, the internal balance of power within that system could evolve. If security institutions gain greater influence under the new Supreme Leader, it may reshape both domestic governance and Iran’s approach to regional conflicts. As Iran enters this new chapter, the key question remains: will Mojtaba Khamenei simply carry forward his father’s legacy, or will his leadership gradually redefine the future of the Islamic Republic?&nbsp;Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. 'Same problem...': Trump explains his 'disappointment' on selection of Mojtaba as new Supreme Leader

The war between the United States, Israel and Iran has entered a dangerous new phase after the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a joint strike during the ongoing conflict. Iran’s clerical leadership has now appointed his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as the country’s new Supreme Leader a move seen as defying pressure from Washington and Tel Aviv. The appointment signals that Iran’s ruling establishment remains firmly in control despite the strikes that targeted its top leadership. Analysts say Mojtaba Khamenei is closely linked to the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and is expected to continue his father’s hardline policies by some. Meanwhile, the wider regional war continues to intensify, with missile strikes, retaliatory attacks and rising tensions across West Asia.
