Tensions between Iran and the United States have taken a sharp turn as Tehran refuses to join a second round of talks, citing the ongoing blockade and rising pressure. While Donald Trump insists Washington has offered a “fair deal,” thousands rallied in Iran backing the government’s stance. Meanwhile, fresh incidents at sea and diplomatic outreach, including a call between Pakistan and Iran, show the crisis is far from easing.

Indian tanker among vessels shot at by Iranian gunboats in Strait of Hormuz: Reports

A senior military adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has warned that Iran could target and sink US naval vessels in the Strait of Hormuz if Washington attempts to ‘police’ the critical shipping route. The warning came from Mohsen Rezaei, a former commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who was appointed as a military adviser by Iran’s Supreme Leader last month. "Mr Trump wants to become the police of the Strait of Hormuz. Is this really your job? Is this the job of a powerful army like the US?" he said in comments broadcast on Iranian state television. They can definitely be exposed to our missiles, and we can destroy them," Rezaei added, speaking in military uniform during the televised interview.
10 vessels turned back in 48hrs of Iran port blockade: US
The US military said it had successfully turned back 10 vessels attempting to leave Iranian ports during the first 48 hours of what it described as a naval blockade against Iran. "Ten vessels have now been turned around, and ZERO ships have broken through since the start of the US blockade on Monday," US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a post on X. https://www.wionews.com/videos/europe-accelerating-fallback-nato-plan-in-case-trump-pulls-out-1776277810921/embed CENTCOM initially reported nine vessels had been turned back, later updating the figure to 10, including one ship it said was “redirected” back to Iran by a US guided missile destroyer. However, maritime tracking data appeared to challenge the US military’s account of a fully effective blockade. Tracking data from Tuesday suggested that at least 2 vessels departing Iranian ports managed to cross the Strait of Hormuz, although some later altered course and turned back. As per maritime data provider Kpler, the three ships were part of at least seven Iran-linked vessels that passed through the strategic waterway after Washington’s blockade reportedly began at 1400 GMT on Monday. Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations, and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. Amid widespread rumours about the well-being of Iran's new Supreme Leader, Russia has now revealed his whereabouts and backed the Iranian government's position on his condition. Even as the US, including President Trump has continuously claimed that Mojtaba Khamenei is no where to be seen and he is severely injured, Iran said that he is fine. The new Supreme Leader has also issued couple of statements since taking over his father's role, but has not made any public appearances. He has not even issued any video messages, in contrast to his father late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. However, on Tuesday (Mar 31) Russia’s ambassador to Iran said that Mojtaba Khamenei is in Iran, quashing previous reports of him being treated in Russia. “As the Iranian leadership has stated repeatedly, the new leader is in Iran, but for obvious reasons, he is refraining from appearing in public,” Alexey Dedov told the global Russian-language outlet RTVI. Khamenei thanked the Iraqi clergy and people for their “clear position on aggression against Iran.” On Mar 16, he issued a statement amid rumours if Russia escape and said that all those previously appointed to government positions by his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, will remain in their posts and should “continue to carry on with their work.” He also appointed the former chief of the Revolutionary Guards, General Mohsen Rezaei, as a military adviser. The statement increased scrutiny about the wellbeing of the Iranian leader as he did not appear on TV or video to deliver the message.

In his first statement after succeeding his father as country's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba said that Iran will not hesitate to take revenge for the crimes committed by the enemy and mentioned the Minab school massacre. He warned the Gulf countries to close the American bases. He also said Iran had only targeted US bases in neighbouring countries and urged them to determine their position regarding the "aggressors and the killers of our people." However this message was also a read out by a presenter on state TV. This was in stark contrast with the former Supreme Leader - who appeared in video at least three times in February alone amid heightened tensions between the US and Iran.
What Iran said?
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Mar 14 said that there was "no problem" with the Islamic Republic's new Supreme Leader, silencing all buzz around his whereabouts. "There is no problem with the new supreme leader. He sent his message yesterday, and he will perform his duties," Araghchi told MSNBC. On March 11, Yousef Pezeshkian, the son of President Masoud Pezeshkian, said that Mojtaba was “safe and sound.” Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. US President Donald Trump has confirmed receiving shocking intelligence briefings regarding the personal life of Iran's newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. Speaking during a Fox News interview on Thursday (Mar 26), Trump confirmed that he was told that the new Ayatollah was gay and noted that such claims make for "a bad start" in a theocratic country known for its severe penalties against the LGBTQ+ community. Notably, Trump previously suggested that the new Ayatollah may be dead.
What did the CIA actually find?
According to a New York Post report from last week, citing two US intelligence officials and a source close to the White House, Trump and his senior advisers reportedly burst out laughing when the information came up during a private briefing. The intelligence suggests Mojtaba, 56, may have had a years-long sexual relationship with his male tutor. One official described the sourcing as "derived from one of the most protected sources that the government has." A separate source alleged Mojtaba made "aggressive" sexual advances toward male caregivers while recovering, and being in a possibly heavily medicated state, from injuries sustained in airstrikes on February 28.
The 2008 WikiLeaks Angle: Medical Trips to London and a Delayed Succession
There's a WikiLeaks angle too. "His father and others suspected he was gay, and that was something that people were spreading to try to stop his ascension," a source told The Post. Mojtaba was nonetheless selected to replace his father as Supreme Leader on March 8, despite those reservations.Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others.
