Nearly two years after President Donald Trump refused to accept his defeat in the 2020 election, some of his most loyal Republican acolytes might follow in his footsteps.

When asked, six Trump-backed Republican nominees for governor and the Senate in midterm battlegrounds would not commit to accepting this year’s election results, and another six Republicans ignored or declined to answer a question about embracing the November outcome. All of them, along with many other GOP candidates, have preemptively cast doubt on how their states count votes.

The New York Times contacted Republican and Democratic candidates or their aides in 20 key contests for governor and the Senate. All of the Democrats said, or have said publicly, that they would respect the November results — including Stacey Abrams of Georgia, who refused to concede her 2018 defeat to Brian Kemp in the state’s race for governor. Kemp, now running against her for another term, “will of course accept the outcome of the 2022 election,” said his press secretary, Tate Mitchell.

But several Republicans endorsed by Trump are hesitant to say that they will not fight the results.

Among the party’s Senate candidates, Rep. Ted Budd in North Carolina, Blake Masters in Arizona, Kelly Tshibaka in Alaska and J.D. Vance in Ohio all declined to commit to accepting the 2022 results. So did Tudor Dixon, the Republican nominee for governor of Michigan, and Geoff Diehl, who won the GOP primary for governor of Massachusetts this month.

The candidates and their aides offered an array of explanations. Some blamed Democratic state election officials or made unsubstantiated claims that their opponents would cheat. An aide to Dixon, Sara Broadwater, said “there’s no reason to believe” that Michigan election officials, including Jocelyn Benson, the Democratic secretary of state, “are very serious about secure elections.”

To some degree, the stances by these Republican candidates — which echo Trump’s comments before the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections — may amount to political posturing, in an effort to appeal to GOP voters who do not believe the former president lost in 2020. An aide to one Republican nominee insisted that the candidate would accept this year’s results, but the aide declined to be publicly identified saying so.

And unlike Trump two years ago, the candidates who suggest they might dispute the November results do not hold executive office and lack control of the levers of government power. If any were to reject a fair defeat, they would be far less likely to ignite the kind of democratic crisis that Trump set off after his 2020 loss.

But they do have loud megaphones in a highly polarized media environment, and any unwarranted challenges from the candidates and their allies could fuel anger, confusion and misinformation.

“The danger of a Trumpist coup is far from over,” said Rosa Brooks, a law professor at Georgetown University who in early 2020 convened a group to brainstorm ways Trump could disrupt that year’s election. “As long as we have a significant number of Americans who don’t accept principles of democracy and the rule of law, our democracy remains in jeopardy.”

The positions of these Republican candidates also reflect how, over the past two years, some of those aligned with Trump increasingly reject the idea that it is possible for their side to lose a legitimate election.

“You accept the results of the election if the election is fair and honest,” said John Fredericks, a syndicated talk radio host who was a chair of Trump’s campaigns in Virginia in 2016 and 2020. “If it’s not fair and honest, you don’t.”

Still, many Republican candidates, including several who have cast doubt on the 2020 outcome, said they would recognize this year’s results. Darren Bailey, the Republican nominee for governor of Illinois — who said in a June interview that he did not know if the 2020 election had been decided fairly — responded that “yes,” he would accept the 2022 result.

In Nevada, the campaign of Adam Laxalt, the Republican nominee for Senate, said he would not challenge the final results — even though Laxalt, a former state attorney general, helped lead the effort to overturn Trump’s 2020 defeat in the state, spoke last year about plans to file lawsuits to contest the 2022 election and called voter fraud the “biggest issue” in his campaign.

“Of course he’ll accept Nevada’s certified election results, even if your failing publication won’t,” said Brian Freimuth, a spokesperson for Laxalt.

And Dr Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, who said during his successful Republican primary campaign for Senate that “we cannot move on” from the 2020 election, promised to uphold voters’ will.

“Yes, Dr&nbsp;Oz will accept the result of the PA Senate race in November,” Rachel Tripp, an Oz spokesperson, wrote in a text message.

Three other Republican Senate candidates — Herschel Walker in Georgia, Joe O’Dea in Colorado and Sen. Lisa Murkowski in Alaska — committed to embracing their state’s election results. So did several Republicans running for governor, including Kemp, Joe Lombardo in Nevada and Christine Drazan of Oregon.

Aides to several Republican nominees for governor who have questioned the 2020 election’s legitimacy did not respond to repeated requests for comment on their own races in November. Those candidates included Doug Mastriano of Pennsylvania, Kari Lake of Arizona, Tim Michels of Wisconsin and Dan Cox of Maryland.

Lake was asked in a radio interview this month whether she would concede a defeat to Katie Hobbs, her Democratic rival and Arizona’s secretary of state. “I’m not losing to Katie Hobbs,” Lake replied.

Hobbs’ spokesperson, Sarah Robinson, said her candidate “will accept the results of the election in November.”

Aides to Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Don Bolduc, the Republican Senate nominee in New Hampshire, declined to answer questions about acknowledging the results. Johnson has been a prolific spreader of misinformation about the 2020 election and the Capitol riot. Bolduc claimed that the 2020 contest was stolen from Trump until Thursday when he announced two days after winning his primary that President Joe Biden had won legitimately.

During a Republican primary debate in Michigan in June, Dixon would not commit to honouring the results of the primary — which she went on to win — or the general election, preemptively accusing Benson, the secretary of state, of election fraud.

“If we see the secretary of state running a fair election the way she should be, then that’s a different story,” Dixon said. “We have to see what she’s going to do to make sure it’s going to be a fair election.”

In a statement, a representative for Benson said she and her staff “work tirelessly to ensure the state’s elections are secure and accurate, and expect every candidate and election official to respect the will of the people.”

In Arizona — where Republicans spent months on a government-funded review of 2020 ballots that failed to show any evidence of fraud — Masters, the Trump-backed Republican nominee for Senate, baselessly predicted to supporters in July that even if he defeated Sen. Mark Kelly, the incumbent Democrat, enough votes would somehow be produced to flip the result.

“There’s always cheating, probably, in every election,” Masters said. “The question is, what’s the cheating capacity?”

A Masters aide, Katie Miller, sent the Times an August article in The Arizona Republic in which Masters said there was “evidence of incompetence” but not of fraud in the state’s primary election. Miller declined to say if Masters would respect the November results.

Kelly “has total trust in Arizona’s electoral process,” said a spokesperson, Sarah Guggenheimer.

An aide to Vance, Taylor Van Kirk, cited the candidate’s primary-season endorsement from Ohio’s Republican secretary of state, Frank LaRose. At the time, Vance predicted “a successfully run primary election.” But Van Kirk would not say if Vance would recognize the November outcome. Vance did not respond to messages.

Vance’s Democratic opponent, Rep. Tim Ryan, “will accept the results of the election,” said his spokesperson, Jordan Fuja.

A recent study carried out by Wake Smith of Yale University and&nbsp;published in Environmental Research Communications proposes that a high-flying aircraft will spray small aerosol particles into the atmosphere at latitudes of 60 degrees north and south.

According to the scientists, the method would "abate climate change by deflecting back into space a small fraction of the incoming solar radiation."

However, it does come at a hefty cost. The method is called stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) and as per the Daily Mail report would cost a whopping $11 billion yearly.

Although they admitted that the idea is controversial, the researchers asserted that the idea is "feasible" and that $11 billion a year is "extraordinarily cheap" in comparison to other climate solutions like carbon capture.

The proposal does have some drawbacks: The planes would emit their own emissions that would contribute to global warming.&nbsp;Additionally, the aerosol would contain sulphur dioxide, which in large doses can harm the lungs and airways by corroding them and causing nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.

But the researchers contend that less than one per cent of the global population lives in the target areas.&nbsp;

However, Smith also admitted that the plan would only serve as a sort of Earth-salvaging bandage rather than addressing the fundamental causes of climate change.

"It's aspirin, not penicillin. It's not a substitute for decarbonisation," he said.&nbsp;

Recently, a Canadian family went viral as it was on a world tour to create memories before three of their four children would eventually lose their eyesight.

Canadian parents Edith Lemay and Sebastian Pelletier first noticed that their eldest daughter Mia had vision issues when she was three years old. Mia was later diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a rare genetic disorder that results in a loss of eyesight over time.

After a few years in 2019, the couple observed similar symptoms in their two boys, Laurent, 5, and Colin, 7. However, their second son cleared all the tests.

The mother said that since there is no cure for the illness or to halt the spread of the disorder, they cannot do anything for it. The parents predict that children will completely lose their visions by the time they reach midlife.

Lemay said&nbsp;that they could do just one thing for Mia and the other kids for them to create "visual memories," as the specialist recommended. The mother further said that instead of showing her an elephant in a book, they would take the children to actually see a real elephant.

She and her husband quickly started planning to spend a year touring the world with their children. The couple travelled frequently before becoming parents. Lemay says that there are good things to do at home, but nothing beats travelling.

The six-person family had a detailed trip, including visiting China and travelling to Russia by land, which was repeatedly postponed due to Covid travel restrictions. They left for Montreal in March 2022 without any plan. They started their journey in Namibia, where they were able to see elephants, zebras, and giraffes.

According to mainland Chinese news organisation Red Star News, images from an internal correspondence claiming to show three employees hiding in the bathroom to smoke have gone viral on social media.

The three images show employees sitting on a toilet smoking while using the phone, and these were also used by the company to warn other employees against violating its policies.

'A dystopian nightmare': Chinese firm films employees in loo as a method of enforcing its 'no smoking rule'

Two people have died and almost 90 have been injured as Japan is battered by super typhoon Nanmadol.

The typhoon is being described as one of the worst typhoons ever witnessed in the country. As per BBC, authorities have ordered the evacuation of nine million people as the nation prepares for extensive floods and landslides and transportation and businesses suffer.

On Sunday morning, it made landfall on Kyushu, the southernmost island in Japan, and it is expected to move over Honshu in the coming days.

As per AFP, evacuation advisories are not mandatory. Authorities made an effort to emphasise how concerned they were about the weather throughout the weekend since in the past they have had trouble persuading people to seek shelter ahead of big storms.

By 2033, Elon Musk's Tesla and its AI will be smarter than humans: Study

At&nbsp;one of the largest gatherings in Britain, the country prepares for the historic state funeral of the oldest monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, as King Charles III prepares to host world leaders.

Hundreds of thousands of people have flocked to witness the Queen's coffin lying in state at the British Parliament following her death on September 8 at the age of 96, after seven decades on the throne.

At the age of 73, Charles is the oldest monarch to ever succeed on the throne. On Sunday evening, he will be hosting dozens of foreign leaders visiting for the Queen's funeral, AFP reported.

An unnamed boy, 11, was seen in the video crying and acting to avoid doing homework, claiming he has an allergy to it. The video went viral on mainland Chinese social media after his mother recorded the incident and posted it online, Xibu Juece reported.

The mother advised going to the doctor, but the kid refused. Yu then, getting furious, asked the boy to stop acting and resume his homework. She further asked how he suddenly developed this allergy and not earlier. The boy then replied that it was incubation time.

A country-wide ban would be imposed on abortion after 15 weeks would be imposed as per Graham's proposed bill, with the exception of rape, incest, and situations when the mother's life is in danger.&nbsp;

Later, official defence sources confirmed the light to be a satellite and earlier media reports said that it was one of Elon Musk's "Starlink" satellites, news agency ANI reported.

Notably, similar mysterious lights that baffled people were photographed in Punjab's Pathankot in December 2021. Before this, in June 2021, unusual lights flickering in the night sky had been seen in Gujarat and surrounding areas, sparking rumours about UFOs.

Three weeks into his 12-year sentence for corruption, Nooryana Najwa, daughter of former Malayan prime minister Najib Razak, requested "proper" medical care for her jailed father.

Razak was admitted to a hospital in Kuala Lumpur on September 4 for a routine medical check-up.

However in her social media post, Nooryana claimed that on September 10, when doctors examined Razak, they just changed his medication and sent him back to jail again. She claimed that Razak's desire to continue being examined in the hospital was turned down without specifying who denied the request.

She added that the former prime minister has high blood pressure and has developed new stomach ulcers, a medical condition that has been recurring for over 15 years.

In response to Nooryana's request, the current Malaysian Prime Minister, Islamil Sabri Yaakob, instructed the health ministry to give Razak the "best treatment."

Sixth graders at Davisville Middle School considered their teacher Aaron Thomas a "creep" after observing him leering at a few female students, calling them by nicknames, and even pushing them to dance for him. All this, while he treated the "boys with contempt, and sometimes cruelty" reports Boston Globe.

They tried talking to adults about what they witnessed, but no one took them seriously and all this while they would see the girls in their class struggle to deal with the teacher's behaviour.

The teacher reportedly even told the students that no one could do anything to him and that he had withstood the parents' complaints for almost 30 years.&nbsp;

So, the students started keeping a log of all his creepy comments, and this "pedo database" is now part of an investigation into the&nbsp;teacher.

In an interview with the Boston Globe, one of the boys talked about how he and his buddies started their "Pedo Database" in January 2021 to keep tabs on the teacher's actions and words.&nbsp;

Talking about the girls and what they were going through he said, “Sometimes they’d laugh. Sometimes they just kind of just sit there awkwardly.”&nbsp;

On January 5, 2021, the boys who were now in the seventh grade started a subchannel on discord which they named after the alleged paedophile teacher, called it a "pedo database" and started using it as a platform to keep records of "the [teacher’s] pedo moments and quotes here so we can get evidence."

In April 2022, the teacher who also served as the coach was escorted out of the school after a girl and her family accused him of&nbsp;conducting naked “fat tests” on teenage athletes.&nbsp;And then, in late April 2022, the teacher was escorted out of the middle school.

When the boys learned that people had been asked to come forward with information, they informed their parents of their "Pedo Database".

It is now in the hands of the US attorney's Office, the state Department of Children, Youth, and Families, the state Department of Education, and attorney Matthew Oliverio, who is leading the school's internal investigation.&nbsp;

However, experts and palaeontologists say that the archaeological find belongs in a museum and not some rich guy's living room.

The skeleton is believed to be of an iguanodon dinosaur and it measures about four feet (1.3 metres) tall and 9.8 feet (three metres) long, making it small enough to fit in a run-of-the-mill living room. But is it appropriate to showcase such a scientific discovery as a trophy?&nbsp;

Palaeontologist Steve Brusatte, who works with the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, disagrees. It's "much more than just ornaments for the rich to put in their living rooms,"&nbsp;he said while talking to Daily Mail.

In recent times, Dinosaur bones have gone from being the subject of research to expensive art pieces. Once they were almost exclusively purchased by museums for reasonable prices are now sold to the highest bidder for millions.

Auctioneer Alexandre Giquello, while talking to Reuters said that the specimen, known as "Zephyr," is the perfect size for a one-of-a-kind piece of home décor. It is estimated to sell for between 400,000 and 500,000 euros ($495,000).

The dinosaur, which Italian palaeontologists partially reconstructed, was found in Moffat County, Colorado in 2019 when road construction was taking place on private property. Little is known about the dinosaur's journey from the earth to the Paris auction house.

As per the state government of Gujarat, the showpiece investment of INR 1.54 trillion was the highest ever made by any group in an Indian state.

The state government in its statement announced that Vedanta would set up two units: a chip-related production unit with an investment of 600 billion rupees ($7.58 billion) and a display manufacturing facility in which it will invest 945 billion rupees ($11.95 billion).

According to the statement, Vedanta and Foxconn will collaborate closely with the state government to create high-tech clusters with the necessary infrastructure, such as land, semiconductor-grade water, and power.

A wild kangaroo reportedly killed an elderly man in Australia who was keeping it as a pet, police said, in the first fatal kangaroo attack in 86 years.

The kangaroo's species was not identified but is believed to be the western grey. It can be found in Western Australia's Great Southern region. Western grey males grow up to nearly 2.2 metres (more than seven feet) and weigh about 70 kg (154 pounds).

The animal was posing a continuous threat to emergency responders and had to be shot and killed, said police. The department believed that the man was keeping a wild kangaroo as a pet.

Another similar incident took place in Lucknow, where a retired teacher was fatally assaulted by her American Pit Bull Terrier. The woman died from her injuries in the ambulance on her route to the hospital.&nbsp;

People believe that waterlogging and traffic congestion were brought on by the city's heavy rain leading to heavy traffic in the city. Several videos went viral showing vehicles stuck on a long traffic route.
