As per the latest figures, the death toll from the disaster has already crossed the 5,000 mark. It is feared that the number would only move upwards and may reach 20,000. The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday warned that 23 million people including 1.4 million children could be affected by the tremors.

More than 1,000 people have been confirmed as dead due to the massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck central Turkiye and Northwestern Syria.

The quake, as per a Reuters report, was also felt in Cyprus and Lebanon. However, as per the Danish geological institute, tremors from the earthquake were felt as far away as Greenland, some 5,500 km away. &nbsp;

CCTV footage and mobile footage of the devastation have flooded the internet. Some of these videos show people trapped under the rubble, others show the moment when massive buildings fell like a "house of cards".

CCTV, amateur videos capture Turkiye, Syria's deadly earthquake

A massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake has wrought widespread destruction in Turkey&nbsp;and Syria. The latest counts have put the death toll at around 3,700 people. However, it is expected that this figure may reach 10,000, as many people are still trapped under the rubble.

The earthquake has brought down massive multi-storey buildings and whole apartment blocks.&nbsp;

As per Reuters, this is the worst tremor to hit Turkey&nbsp;this century. In war-hit Syria, it has only added to the devastation already being borne by millions of Syrians who for 11 years have been plagued by war.

“I think Benedict’s death was instrumentalized,” Francis said. “People wanted to score points for their own side. And the people who instrumentalize such a good person, so close to God, I would almost say ... those people don’t have ethics, they are people who belong to a party, not to the church.”

To drive home the point that Benedict was above such partisanship, Francis recalled how the emeritus pope handled a complaint that he had received against Francis over his support for legal protections for same-sex partnerships.

When he was archbishop of Buenos Aires, then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio supported Argentine legislation that would allow people in stable relationships, including same-sex unions, to enjoy inheritance and other rights. Francis revealed Sunday that someone who fancied himself “a great theologian” had filed a complaint with Benedict about Francis’ position but that the emeritus pope “didn’t get scared.”

“He called four top-notch cardinal theologians and said, ‘Explain this to me.’”

“They explained it to him, and that’s how the story ended,” Francis said. “It’s an anecdote to show how Pope Benedict moved when there was a complaint.”

Mohammad Asim, a hospital official, as per a Reuters report, said that while 93 people have perished, 221 are wounded, of which&nbsp;57 are currently in critical condition, undergoing treatment.

The attack occurred in one of the most fortified areas of northwestern Peshawar city, an area that houses offices&nbsp;and residences of police and counter-terrorism departments. It is still under investigation how the terrorist entered the sensitive area where entry is restricted and one must cross at least two check posts to enter.

As per an IANS report, police said that the bomber had placed himself in the front row of the prayer ceremony. Among those killed is Imam Sahibzada Noor ul Amin.

Many people were trapped under the debris, and a rescue operation during the night pulled out nine bodies. The "powerful explosion" caused damage to the mosque building, bringing down its roof and one wall.&nbsp;

AFP quotes Bilal Ahmad Faizi, a spokesperson for the rescue organisation 1122, as saying that on Tuesday the last part of the collapsed roof will be removed.&nbsp;

"This morning we are going to remove the last part of the collapsed roof so we can recover more bodies, but we are not hopeful of reaching any survivors," he said.

At least 20 slain police officers have been laid to rest with honour after a prayer ceremony, their coffins draped in the Pakistani flag.

Talking to WION,&nbsp;Commissioner Peshawar Riaz Mehsud shared the latest tally, reportedly 61&nbsp;people have been killed while at least&nbsp;another 150 were&nbsp;injured.

Media reports are still unclear whether the explosion happened inside the place of worship or outside.&nbsp;However, as per inputs from WION's Pakistan bureau chief Anas Mallick, the blast happened inside the Mosque. It reportedly happened just after Zuhr Prayers and due to the explosion, one "side of the mosque has collapsed."

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects while an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this attack is underway. No arrests have been made at this stage, it further added.

The identity of the deceased and injured is still to be established. However, the police have disclosed that the owner of the house is among the victims.

As per Reuters, the latest attack follows a spate of shootings that shocked the nation last year.&nbsp;

Users from many locations globally, including Cape Town in South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Poland, Sri Lanka, Peru&nbsp;and Ukraine, also took to the website to report similar outages. Users also posted similar reports on Twitter.

Microsoft investigating Teams, Outlook outage; 'So are we supposed to go home?,' ask users

Launching a fresh legal battle against Google, the US justice department on Tuesday sued the search giant for its dominance of the online advertising market.

This is the second federal lawsuit filed by the DOJ against the tech giant over antitrust violations. It has been launched along with eight US states: New York, California, Rhode Island, Colorado, New Jersey, Tennessee, Connecticut and Virginia.

While the earlier case targeted Google's "world-dominating" search engine, this one targets the platform's advertising business.

In 2021, Alphabet Inc's Google generated more than $200 billion in sales from its ad dealings.

The US in its lawsuit alleges that the revenue was unlawfully maintained by a monopoly that "corrupted legitimate competition in the ad tech industry."

The company, however, denied the monopoly and said its rivals include Amazon, Facebook-owner Meta and Microsoft.

US DOJ sues Google over online ad market domination; seeks to level the playing field for other firms

In yet another shooting in the United States, a 21-year-old man opened fire at people in a gas station convenience store in the capital Washington, killing three, only to later shoot himself dead.

The incident took place in Yakima, Washington. In what is being described as a "random situation" by the police, local man Jarid Haddock shot and killed three people in and around the convenience store.

As per an Albany Herald report, Haddock pulled into the ARCO/ampm gas station and "tried to get into the lobby," but was unable to,&nbsp;due to locked doors.

He then walked across the street to the Circle K chain store and shot two people, who were there getting food. He then left the store and shot another person outside. All three died.

"There was no interaction between him and people," said Police Chief Matt Murray.&nbsp;

"They were just sitting there getting food and got surprised by this person who came in and ... literally as he was opening the door, he started shooting these people."

Haddock then fled the scene after shooting through the window of a car, which was later confirmed as belonging to him.

Yakima Police had launched an extensive manhunt for him. However, hours later, they received a 911 call from a woman who said that Haddock, who had been declared a suspect, had borrowed her phone near a supermarket.&nbsp;

The 21-year-old called his mother and made several incriminating statements including 'I killed those people'. He also said he was going to kill himself.

As per AFP, first responders raced to the scene, arriving in time to hear gunshots as Haddock committed suicide.

"They gave medical care and tried to save his life, but he was later pronounced deceased," said the police chief.

As per the NY Times, the draft guidance would not be mandatory for food manufacturers. However, if adopted, they would help the FDA to take enforcement action against companies that stray from the levels prescribed.

However, not everyone is happy with the guidelines. &nbsp;Quoting Jane Houlihan, research director for the nonprofit Healthy Babies Bright Futures, NY Post says they are disappointing.

"It doesn’t go far enough to protect babies from neurodevelopmental damage from lead exposures," said Houlihan.&nbsp;

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Monday said that the twin problems pose an urgent risk to society and said that the issue "cannot wait and cannot be postponed." As per AFP, the lawsuit alleging violation of antitrust laws, which relate to how a tech giant acquires or maintains its dominance, will be the second federal complaint filed against the search giant. Google is currently the number one player in the $278.6 billion digital-ad market in the United States and controls most of the technology used to "buy, sell and serve online advertising."

The two groups laundered over $60 million worth of ethereum stolen during the theft on January 13 using a privacy protocol called Railgun, the FBI said in a statement. Some portion of it was then sent to several virtual asset providers and converted to bitcoin.

Talking to AFP, Emilio, an activist with Casa de Venezuela one of the organisations who are helping the migrants said that people mostly want to go to New York and that they are arranging transportation for them.

The incident has come to light just days after the US Supreme Court placed a temporary stay on the end of "Title 42" a Trump-era measure that has been used to expel hundreds of thousands of migrants in recent years. It is set to expire on December 21.

Political 'stunt': 85 migrants dropped outside VP Kamala Harris' house amid -18 degree temperature

It’s been months since China’s Zhurong Mars rover entered a “hibernation” to wait out the cold and harsh winter on planet&nbsp;Mars’ northern hemisphere and its alien landscape. However, the slumber which was planned to end in December of last year still continues. Now the question is, will the rover ever wake up? There’s still hope.

What is Zhurong?

Zhurong is part of Tianwen 1, China’s ambitious Mars mission, and the nation’s first interplanetary mission. The mission, which includes a Mars rover, touched down on the Red Planet’s Utopian Planitia in May of the year 2021.

Why is a rover ‘sleeping’?&nbsp;

Following its landing, it conducted a range of scientific and exploration activities before retreating into a so-called hibernation or dormant state to survive the barren planet’s winter, during which, as per space.com, temperatures can fall down to minus 195 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 125 degrees Celsius).&nbsp;

It went to sleep on May 18 of last year.

What conditions are needed for it to wake up?

Talking to reporters in September 2022, Jia Yang, a Tianwen 1 mission deputy chief designer, revealed that Zhurong would wake up by itself when two conditions are met: it can generate energy greater than 140 watts and the planet’s temperature, or rather the region where the rover is, reaches the somewhat warmer, 5 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 15 degrees Celsius).

When was it supposed to rise up again?

Zhurong slumber was expected to end in December when the red planet experiences its spring equinox. However, this did not happen. So far, it’s just silence.

What went wrong?

As per a January 9 report by Space News, China’s first interplanetary mission may be in trouble “with the rover potentially lost on the surface after winter hibernation”. There is also speculation that maybe the temperatures just aren’t warm enough.

What is the temperature on Mars currently?

As per NASA’s Perseverance Rover, which is also wandering Mars’s surface, the temperature in the planet’s Jezero Crater has only briefly risen higher than Zhurong’s lowest heat requirement.&nbsp;

But given that Perseverance is nearer to the red planet’s equator - located around seven degrees latitude south of its Chinese counterpart - it may be experiencing slightly more favourable conditions than Zhurong.

How is Perseverance awake?

NASA's 2020 rover Perseverance, meanwhile, is not asleep. It is nuclear-powered and doesn’t need to hibernate.

What now?

The rover's mission with which China achieved the status of being the second country to reach the surface of Mars is already a great success.

But only time can tell if it will wake up to achieve bigger and better things.

An NGO by the name of Nature Foundation St Maarten which as per its website aims to “preserve and enhance its (St Maarten’s) nature for generations to come” will execute the government-funded plan to capture and euthanise more than 450 monkeys over the next three years. The numbers are from a now-outdated survey carried out in 2020.

Sint Maarten’s ministry of tourism, economic affairs, transportation and telecommunication in December approved 100,000NAf ($55,000) in funding per year for the project.

Leslie Hickerson, the NGO’s manager, said that it can be difficult to maintain population size control for invasive species as they lack natural predators in the area.&nbsp;

“Species management is an important aspect of keeping the island healthy for those who come after us,” he said.&nbsp;

The species which is native to southern and eastern Africa was introduced to the region sometime in the 17th century by European settlers who kept them as exotic pets.

Dave Du Toit, founder of the Vervet Monkey Foundation says that the cull is unlikely to work.

His non-profit shelters orphaned and injured primates in South Africa where the species is native. He suggests “vasectomise the males and sterilise the females” would work better.&nbsp;

Du Toit also said that research into food disposal practices and the availability of food for wildlife might help in achieving a more harmonious existence between the monkeys and the humans of Sint Maarten.

However, yet another suggestion is to capture and relocate the entire monkey population. The proposition has been offered by Eusebio Richardson, a ranger with the Nature Foundation who says that given how fast these monkeys reproduce, relocation might be the only way to “protect the biodiversity of the island”.

Initially, in&nbsp;a statement to the press, an ambulance service spokesperson had revealed that "paramedics have been called,"&nbsp;for Qantas Flight QF144 from Auckland, New Zealand to Sydney, Australia.

As per a report by Australia’s Channel Nine television news, there were "reports of an engine failure".&nbsp;The aircraft is a Boeing 737-800, a twin-engine plane, which means it can land safely with just one engine.&nbsp;

The flight as per an AFP report had issued a mid-air 'mayday' alert while flying over the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand.

As per the Australian government's aviation regulator, a mayday call indicates that "an aircraft is in grave and imminent danger and requires immediate assistance". However, as per a Reuters report quoting a&nbsp;Qantas&nbsp;spokesperson, the grave danger signal was&nbsp;downgraded to "Possible Assistance Needed" before landing.

Over the three months, pay overall rose by 6.4 per cent in cash terms; 7.2 per cent for the private sector and 3.3 per cent for the public sector.

Compared to the CPI or Consumer Price Index, the above-mentioned time period reportedly saw pay tumble by 3.9 per cent; which is the biggest fall since 2009. Regular pay also saw a 3.8 per cent fall.

However, the latest figures show that the number of people out of work for up to six months and those unemployed for a period between six to 12 months saw an increase. For the former, the numbers were driven by people aged 16 to 24 years.

As per ONS director of economic statistics Darren Morgan, “Vacancies fell again, though remaining at very high levels, with the number of people looking for work broadly in line with the number of jobs being advertised”

“The real value of people’s pay continues to fall, with prices still rising faster than earnings. This remains amongst the fastest drops in regular earnings since records began,” he added.
