UN in a statement announced, “on 16 January 2023, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999), 1989 (2011) and 2253 (2015) concerning ISIL (Da’esh), Al-Qaida, and associated individuals, groups, undertakings and entities approved the addition of the entry specified below to its ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions List of individuals and entities subject to the assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo set out in paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 2610 (2021) and adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.”&nbsp;

As per the sanctions committee, the LeT deputy chief was involved in planning, raising funds, recruiting and radicalising youth to unleash violence on India; particularly in Jammu and Kashmir (J&amp;K).

This comes just months after China blocked a June 2022 attempt by India and the United States to list Makki under the 1267 Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council. The two nations have already listed him as a terrorist under their respective domestic laws.&nbsp;

Responding to the news, Indian former Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti, under whose tenure India and the US had made the 2022 pitch, called the listing a “huge success”.

The protests are part of a larger action by professionals of&nbsp;various trades over pay raises.

How much raise are they asking for?

They are asking for a raise that at least matches the double-digit inflation.

In Scotland, teachers were offered a five per cent raise, which they rejected, instead demanding 10 per cent.

Across England and Wales, in 2022, many state-school teachers received a 5 per cent pay raise, while in Northern Ireland, many of them were offered 3.2 per cent for the school years 2021-22, and 2022-23.

However, teacher’s unions argue that with inflation above ten per cent, these meagre raises are essentially pay cuts.

When will the strikes start?

As per Daily Mail, strikes will happen over the course of two months; February and March.

On February 1 itself, thousands of teachers will walk out. This is expected to affect more than 23,000 schools.

Further strikes have been announced over six days, spread out between the two months. February 14, March 15 and March 16 will witness larger strikes, while February 28 and March 1 and 2 have been set for regional walkouts.&nbsp;

The NEU said that each school will only be affected for four days each, however, this has caused concern among the parents.

What are the parents saying?

In recent years, due to the coronavirus pandemic, education globally has suffered, with millions of children’s studies getting negatively affected by Covid restrictions and lockdowns.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Writing for Daily Mail Molly Kingsley, mother of a child who’ll be impacted, called the strike an “act of educational sabotage.”

Calling the union’s action “militancy”, Kingsley said that children of the poorest families will be most badly affected.

What would happen to children’s education in their teacher’s absence?

A Department for Education (DfE) issued guidance for schools and has called on headteachers to “take all reasonable steps to keep the school open for as many pupils as possible”.

No, currently many schools across Scotland are closed due to teacher strike action, while in Northern Ireland, administrative tasks are currently getting affected.&nbsp;

As per a new announcement by the Educational Institute of Scotland, the strikes are slated to continue in February, April and March. EIS has announced 16 days of industrial action.

In Ireland, five teacher unions are taking action, which as per Daily Mail falls short of a strike. Because of this, administrative tasks like lesson planning are reportedly being disturbed.

US President Biden's latest gaffe at MLK day celebrations invites laughter. Watch!

UK nurses on Thursday staged a walkout in an unprecedented first of the two daylong strikes they term as the "last resort" in their fight for better wages and working conditions. Up to 100,000 members of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are stopping work from 0800 to 2000 GMT after rejecting a government pay offer.&nbsp;The RCN's industrial action is just one of the many waves of stoppages by public and private sector employees.

The strike is the first in the Royal College of Nursing union's 106-year history.

"We have not chosen industrial action lightly. We're tired. We're fed up," a senior nurse told AFP. "We need a pay rise now to make a living."

Right to protest ‘not absolute’, says Rishi Sunak as UK prepares to introduce broader powers for Police

A new Oxfam report titled “Survival of the Richest” has revealed that over the last 10 years, billionaires of the world have doubled their wealth. The wealthiest one per cent has gained 74 per cent over the bottom 50 per cent. On Monday, revealing the report’s findings, the aid group suggested that by 2030, the number of billionaires should be reduced by half. For this, it suggests the implementation of measures like higher taxes and other policies that make the world more equal.

The report comes as the global elite are set to meet for their annual gathering in Davos. Starting Monday, as per AFP, the Swiss Alpine Village will host political leaders, CEOs and celebrities for the week-long World Economic Forum meeting.

As per Oxfam, since 2020, even as inflation outpaced wages for at least 1.7 billion people worldwide, the wealth of billionaires has surged by $2.7 billion a day. By the end of 2021, the wealthiest had pocketed $26 trillion or 63 per cent of the total new wealth. The rest went to the remaining 99 per cent of the global population.&nbsp;

To somewhat level the playing field, the group called for taxes that progressively redistribute wealth.

Citing a report by ProPublica, a US-based investigative news group, Oxfam said that with Elon Musk facing a “true tax rate” of just 3.2 per cent between 2014-18 and Jeff Bezos paying less than one per cent, it is clear that the wealthiest hardly pay any taxes.

In contrast, 99 per cent pay more taxes. Oxfam presents, as an example, a Ugandan market trader that works with the organisation, and remarks that he pays more than tenfold to the billionaires at 40 per cent.

Oxfam said, “the world should aim to halve the wealth and number of billionaires between now and 2030, both by increasing taxes on the top one per cent and by adopting other billionaire-busting policies”.

As per the group, this would help bring the number of billionaires down to 2012 levels, adding that the “eventual aim should be to go further, and to abolish billionaires altogether, as part of a fairer, more rational distribution of the world’s wealth.”

As per the report, the concentration of wealth “continues to be around primordial characteristics such as caste,” and there is a “persistence of marginalisation” among the historically disadvantaged elements of the society who are still trapped in intergenerational poverty.

The report claims that following the COVID-19 pandemic, the bottom 50 per cent of the population in India has seen its “wealth chipped away”. Between May and December 2022, inflation consistently breached the six per cent statutory limit set out in the amended Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.

US Tech firm C16 Biosciences has come up with “Palmless”, an alternative to palm oil that is made from yeast cells. The product was recently released commercially to try and “reduce the world’s reliance on palm oil”, says Shara Ticku, CEO of the company.

Accounting for over 40 per cent of the world’s vegetable oil usage, Palm oil continues to dominate the market. The tasteless, colourless and odourless oil is equally popular with cosmetic makers and food companies. It owes its popularity to the fact that it doesn’t change the taste or look of the product but instead acts as a natural preservative.

What’s problematic about its usage is the widely documented and significant deforestation it leads to. The tree can grow in low-lying, hot, humid areas near the equator, 85 per cent of which is in Indonesia and Malaysia, areas home to endangered species like the Orangutan, pygmy elephant and Sumatran rhino.

As per BBC, Ticku, the person behind C16 Biosciences, got the idea for Palmless back in 2013, when on a visit to Singapore she was forced to wear a mask due to the toxic air because of Indonesia’s burning rainforests.

Currently, each year, about 3,000 children in Britain are born with rare conditions and on average it takes up to five years, countless tests and visits to doctors for them to get a diagnosis. The delays can cause irreparable damage, which, thanks to this genome, sequencing could be avoided.

Last month, Genomic England and NHS announced the ‘Newborn Genomes Programme’. The pilot scheme which was announced last month will sequence the genomes of 100,000 babies over the next two years.&nbsp;

UK's NHS and Genomics England to use genome sequencing to identify rare diseases in babies

A report has revealed that before the current British Monarch King Charles III took over the throne, the government took the-then Prince’s permission to pass its post-Brexit Environment Act. As per the Guardian report, this was because the law which was touted as “world-leading” and requires landowners to enhance conservation could affect the member of the royal family’s business interests.

Reportedly, back in 2019, Environment minister Rebecca Pow wrote to the then Prince of Wales asking if he would be willing to accept section seven of the environment bill.

Section seven of the environment bill, which became law in November 2021, refers to the need “to conserve the setting of land with a natural environment or natural resources or which is a place of archaeological, architectural, artistic, cultural or historic interest.” Those in breach risk getting fined.

In the now&nbsp;public letter, the environment minister writes to Charles “This bill contains measures on conservation covenants which affect the interests of the crown, the Duchy of Lancaster and the Duchy of Cornwall. Part 7 (conservation covenants) of the bill applies to crown land as it applies to any other land.”

Ukraine alleges Russia cancelled scheduled prisoner exchange at the last minute

Scientists have made an amazing discovery. In an inhospitable valley in the Chilean Patagonia, they have come across the remains of four species of dinosaurs. The fossils which were discovered and transported to a laboratory in 2021, as per researchers, belong to species that have previously not been identified in the area.&nbsp;

Chilean Antarctic Institute (Inach), in collaboration with the University of Chile and the University of Texas, made this discovery on an expedition.&nbsp;

Talking to AFP, Marcelo Leppe, director of Inach, said, "It’s always super exciting in scientific terms to find something that has not previously been discovered or described."

Researchers have also found remains of two bird species, an Enantiornithe, believed to be the most plentiful birds of the Mesozoic era; and Ornithurinae, a group which can be directly linked to present-day birds.

As per the findings, the dinosaur species, which includes a megaraptor, inhabited the area at the end of the Cretaceous period, between 66 and 75 million years ago.&nbsp;

Interestingly, the megaraptor belongs to the theropod family, of which the famous T-Rex is also a member. These carnivorous dinosaurs were at the top of the food chain and were equipped with raptor claws, small teeth for tearing their prey, and large upper limbs.

As per Jared Amudeo, a researcher with the University of Chile, the Unenlagiinae remains has a "novel evolutionary character, which would indicate that this is a new species of unenlagine or perhaps a representative of a different clade (group)."

'Super exciting' find: Researchers discover four species of dinosaurs, including a potentially new one

Dinosaurs inhabited this planet millions of years ago and in the last&nbsp;200 or so years, humanity has found much evidence of the mighty beasts. You would think that given that the very first evidence of dinosaurs was found in the early 1600s, we would know almost everything there is to know about them.&nbsp;

However, that's far from the truth: we are still finding surprising and fascinating discoveries that add to our knowledge. For example, a scientist recently spotted an extremely rare find that tells us more about what these beasts ate; this time it's a mammal on the menu.

In the first such find of the 21st century Hans Larsson, a professor of biology at McGill University’s Redpath Museum in Montreal while visiting a museum collection in China, spotted a mammal's foot preserved inside the fossilised guts of a Microraptor zhaoianus.

"At first, I couldn’t believe it. There was a tiny rodent-like mammal foot about a centimetre (0.4 inches) long perfectly preserved inside a Microraptor skeleton," said Larsson, as per a CNN report.

He added that finds like these are the only "solid evidence" researchers have about the food consumption of these long-extinct animals and that even these finds are very rare.

Extremely rare evidence of dinosaurs consuming mammals spotted

In what has been described as a “senseless death” a 37-year-old mother of three children died in a Canadian emergency room waiting room, after awaiting treatment for about seven hours. Allison Holthoff was rushed to a hospital in the Nova Scotia province on the morning of 31st December as her condition worsened over what was earlier thought to be an upset stomach. Talking to CBS News, her husband,&nbsp;&nbsp;Gunter Holthoff, revealed how he had carried his wife to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Nova Scotia’s Amherst town on his back and how they spent hours waiting in agony before the mother of three died.&nbsp;As per Gunter, they had reached the hospital at around 11 am but they didn’t get to see a doctor till after 6 pm.

Reportedly during the preliminary examination that was conducted after 6 pm, Allison was asked to submit a urine sample, but by then the pain had gotten so bad that she fell to the bathroom floor while trying to prepare the sample. She then had to be assisted by two people.&nbsp;

Soon, her condition deteriorated to the point where she couldn’t even sit in a wheelchair and had to lie down on the floor. As the pain progressed, the woman told her husband that she felt&nbsp;like she was dying and even said, “I think I’m dying. Don’t let me die here”.

As per Daily Mail, she spent hours writhing on the floor as nurses brushed her off.&nbsp;

Towards the end, Allison “descended” screaming into a cardiac arrest and it was discovered that she had been suffering from internal bleeding all along.

In the end, doctors reportedly told Gunter that they could operate to save Allison’s life but that she had less than a one per cent chance of surviving and that even if she does pull through, it won’t be a life worth living.

The incident has raised questions about Canadian healthcare. Allison’s family, backed by Nova Scotia politicians, are demanding to know why she wasn’t taken care of for hours.&nbsp;&nbsp;

‘Unfortunately, I do feel like she was neglected, and it was to a point where they couldn’t ignore us anymore,’ said Gunter. An investigation into the case has been launched by the Nova Scotia Health Authority.

On December 30, several green balloons were found in the forests of the Tulyara village, Chinyalisaur in the Uttarkashi district, in India's northern state of&nbsp;Uttarakhand and now as per reports based on a social media post, they may not have nefarious origins as previously thought.

Last month's discovery had sparked a wave of panic among the residents and security agencies with local officials indicating that unruly elements of the society may have purposefully left the balloons and the flag with the intention of causing panic among the locals.

The Indian Supreme Court on Tuesday in a paramount ruling said that no additional restrictions can be imposed on the country's fundamental right to Freedom of Speech and Expression, even in cases involving officials holding high offices.

A five-member bench comprising of Justices V Ramasubramanian, S. Abdul Nazeer, B R Gavai, A S Bopanna, and B V Nagarathna agreed on the larger question with regard to the imposition of additional curbs on the fundamental right and said that it could not be done.&nbsp;

The issue had originally gained heat in 2016 when Azam Khan a minister in the then Uttar Pradesh government had alleged that a ghastly gang rape incident involving a mother-daughter duo on a highway near Bulandshahr district of the northern Indian state was a "political conspiracy".

Emphasising the importance of "sweet speech" the bench quoted Tamil poet and philosopher Tiruvalluvar of the Tamil Sangam age.&nbsp;

Tiruvalluvar &nbsp;in his classic "Tirukkural" had written that the "scar left behind by a burn injury may heal, but not the one left behind by an offensive speech."

The bench said, "Though religious texts of all faiths and ancient literature of all languages and geographical locations are full of such moral injunctions emphasising the importance of sweet speech (more than free speech), history shows that humanity has consistently defied those diktats."

Addressing a suggestion by the petitioner they said that it is not always possible for a prime Minister or a Chief minister to maintain disciplinary control over their council of ministers.

"In a country like ours where there is a multi-party system and where coalition governments are often formed, it is not possible at all times for a Prime Minister/Chief Minister to take the whip, whenever a statement is made by someone in the Council of Ministers," said the judgement by four justices; V Ramasubramanian, Nazeer, B R Gavai and A S Bopanna. They said that when governments at time exist on "wafer thin" majority it is not always possible for the PM or the CM to drop any minister out of the Cabinet.

However, as per PTI, Justice B V Nagarathna who wrote a separate judgement differed on the question of whether the government can be held liable for disparaging utterances of its ministers. She said that the government can in fact be held liable if the statement can be traced back to the views of the government.

She added that public functionaries and people of influence due to the influence they wield owe a duty to the society at large to be more responsible and restrained in regard to their speech.

"A mere statement made by a Minister, inconsistent with the rights of a citizen under Part III of the Constitution, may not constitute a violation of the constitutional rights and become actionable as Constitutional tort. But if as a consequence of such a statement, any act of omission or commission is done by the officers resulting in harm or loss to a person/citizen, then the same may be actionable as a constitutional tort," said the apex court.

Pakistan's Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah in a recent interview with a Pakistani news channel said that Islamabad may target Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) hideouts on Afghanistani soil. As per the official, the total number of liquor bottles sold during the last week of 2022 stood at 11 million. Among the different kinds of liquors Delhiites purchased, various kinds of Whiskies topped the list.

Off this sale, the national capital's government earned $65.55 million or INR 560 crore, this includes excise duty and Value Added Tax (VAT).

December as a whole saw an average sale of 1.38 Million (13.8 lakh) bottles per day in Delhi. The least amount of bottles sale was recorded on December 27 with less than one million (11 lakh) worth $2.33 million (Rs 19.3 crore).

This figure means that 2022 saw the best end year of the sale of liquor in three years.

In 2021 the total number of liquor bottles sold was 1.25 million (12.52 lakh). For 2020 the figure was 1.29 million (12.95 lakh), while 2019 saw the sale of 1.25 million (12.55 lakh) bottles.

New Year's week saw Indian capital Delhi guzzle liquor worth $26.3 million

The Japanese government this year will increase the financial aid for child-rearing families moving from the capital Tokyo's metropolitan area to rural areas with declining birthrates and an ageing population.

As per an Asia Nikkei report, the financial support stands to be raised up to 1 million yen ($7,500) per child from the current 300,000 yen ($2,314).&nbsp;The programme which was launched in the year 2019, encourages families with children to move to areas with low, ageing populations.&nbsp;

People who have resided in 23 wards of Tokyo for more than five years in the last decade are eligible for this aid. Also eligible are parents who have been commuting to these wards from other areas in Tokyo during the same time frame.&nbsp;

Every household of movers will in principle receive one million yen. The financial aid increases with every child by an additional 300,000 yen.&nbsp;

This aid is conditional on meeting one of three conditions: if they remotely continue with the same work they did prior to re-location, they get employment in a small or midsize company in the area they relocated to or start a new business there.

Starting in April, a couple with two children will be eligible for up to three million yen, which will not be subject to an income test for support.

Applicants have to report to the local government within three months to one year of moving and must live in the relocated area for at least five years. If they move before the end of that period, they'll have to return the aid.

The new strategy which is an update to the 2019 scheme was adopted during a cabinet meeting on Friday. Under it, the government plans to bring the number of movers to 10,000, which will be achieved in five years from fiscal 2023.
