16 years to the day she murdered her five children, a Belgian woman has been euthanised at her own request. On February 28th, 2007, the woman Genevieve Lhermitte slit the throats of her four daughters and one son. Following the mass murder, the woman then tried to take her own life by stabbing herself. However, her suicide attempt failed, and she ended up calling for emergency services. The brutal case shocked the country.&nbsp;

As per AFP, soon after the murders, in 2008, Lhermitte was sentenced to life in prison. Ten years later, in 2019, she was moved to a psychiatric hospital.

For an individual to choose euthanasia, they must be conscious of their decision and be able to express their wish in a consistent, reasonable manner.

"It is this specific procedure that Mrs Lhermitte followed, with the various medical opinions having been collected," said her lawyer.

The US Justice Department has alleged that Alphabet Inc's Google has destroyed internal corporate communications, thereby destroying important evidence in the antitrust lawsuit filed against the company by the United States. Lawyers for the department have asked a federal judge to sanction the company as part of the American government's antitrust case over Google's search business. As per a Reuters report, the DOJ on Thursday asserted that Google failed to suspend a policy in a timely manner, allowing for the automatic and permanent deletion of employees' chat logs.

However, Google in its statement said that it "strongly" refuted the US DOJ's allegations.&nbsp;

"Our teams have conscientiously worked for years to respond to inquiries and litigation," said a Google spokesperson.&nbsp;

This sanctions attempt marks the second time that the US government has sought to punish Google.&nbsp;Last year, the DOJ alleged Google unfairly kept internal documents away from antitrust investigators, claiming they were protected by the attorney-client privilege. Google, at the time, had denied the allegation.

Vijay Shetty, a Toronto Police detective, said at a news conference that Daniel was charged in 2016 with possessing and creating child pornography.

Authorities believe that Daniel was operating alone, used several email addresses and social media accounts, and even edited his photos to look younger.&nbsp;

The officials began investigating on a child-luring and sexual assault case last year which led to Daniel's arrest in February.

Khan has had a number of cases registered against him ever since he was ousted from power last year,&nbsp;that range from gathering illegal funds for his party to inciting violence against state officials.&nbsp;

According to Reuters, he&nbsp;arrived at the courts in a car, which was followed by hundreds of his supporters, chanting and covering the car with flower petals, and was given special permission to take his car inside the Islamabad court due to security concerns.&nbsp;

Amid the celebration, one voice remained silent, that of China's Zhurong Mars rover, which was sent to the surface of the red planet as part of Beijing's Tianwen 1 mission. The Chinese rover has been in "hibernation" for months. It was supposed to wake up back in December of last year. However, almost two months later, its slumber still continues. Last month, a report expressed hope that Zhurong would come out of its sleep, but recent images from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show that it hasn't changed its position for five months.

As per Jia Yang, Tianwen 1 mission deputy chief designer, the rover would wake up when two conditions are met: it can generate energy greater than 140 watts and the planet’s temperature, or rather the region where the rover is, reaches the somewhat warmer, 5 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 15 degrees Celsius).

Animal lovers in the southern Turkish city of Diyarbakir are protesting the demolition of a building. The building, as per an AFP report, is believed to contain several animals and the protestors are pushing for the removal of the stuck animals before the building is demolished for reconstruction. The series of quakes in Turkey&nbsp;and&nbsp;Syria has claimed more than 45,000 lives and has battered huge amounts of infrastructure, many of which are now being cleared to make way for reconstruction. Talking to AFP, Nilay Yilmaz, one of the protestors said "We only had one request: we said 'let us at least go in'... They didn't let us do that either."

The protestors have reportedly been told that the "building would collapse if a crane touched it." However, Yilmaz says that "since 8:00 am they've been cutting at it with that machinery, but the building is still standing."

Dozens of animals survive earthquakes, hunger and thirst for 16 days only to be 'to be killed by human hands'

The latest data from the nation's Henan province shows the extent of the challenge faced by Beijing. For the first time since 1961, the province has recorded more deaths than it had births. As per the latest figures, Henan recorded 8,000 more deaths than births; this as per the South China Morning Post is the province's first population decline in around six decades. In 2022, the province also saw an overall population decline of around 110,000 people.

The population decline is mainly because of a massive outflow of workers and is less compared to 2021's overall population decline of 580,000.

While the patient's name was not released, the study revealed that he is 53 years old and was diagnosed with HIV in 2008. Three years later, he was then diagnosed with a life-threatening form of blood cancer called acute myeloid leukaemia.

As per the study, "this third case of HIV-1 cure" provides "valuable insights that will hopefully guide future cure strategies".

In 2013, the Duesseldorf patient underwent a bone marrow transplant using stem cells from a female donor that had a rare mutation in her CCR5 gene. As per AFP, this gene mutation has been found to stop HIV from entering cells.&nbsp;

Duesseldorf patient cured of HIV; third person in four decades to recover from the disease

At least 39 people, most of them undocumented US-bound migrants who had just survived a perilous jungle, died in a bus crash in Panama early Wednesday, officials said.&nbsp;Updating the toll from 33, Panama's National Migration Service said the injured were being treated at various hospitals and clinics, without saying how many there were.&nbsp;The latest toll, it added, was based on "preliminary information."

The bus had 66 passengers on board&nbsp;when it crashed with a minibus some 400 kilometres (250 miles) west of the capital Panama City, the press statement said.

The bus was transporting migrants who had crossed the Darien Gap -- an inhospitable jungle area bordering Colombia -- westward toward Costa Rica from where they aimed to continue their journey through Central America and Mexico, and ultimately to the United States.

The bus was on its way to a hostel in Gualaca near the Costa Rica border, where the passengers were to have rested before continuing their journey.

Local media said the crash happened as the driver was turning the bus around after missing the hostel.&nbsp;The nationalities of the occupants and the cause of the accident have not been revealed.

Great sadness

President Laurentino Cortizo tweeted his "great sadness" at learning of the accident at Gualaca.&nbsp;"This is regrettable news for Panama and the region," he said, extending his government's condolences to the next of kin.

"Government teams work hard on the ground, providing medical assistance to survivors of this tragedy," the president added.

The Central American country's health ministry said "more than five children" were among the injured.

Several people were taken by ambulance to a hospital in the Chiriqui provincial capital city David, according to authorities.

The government of Panama, in collaboration with United Nations agencies and aid organisations, has set up camps to provide humanitarian assistance to the never-ending migrant arrivals.

In his tweet, Cortizo reiterated his government's "commitment to continue providing humanitarian aid and dignified conditions to face irregular migration."

Panamanian authorities help transfer migrants, hundreds every day, in private buses from the border with Colombia to Paso Canoas on the border with Costa Rica.

It is a journey of some 700 kilometres and about 10 hours for which the migrants buy a ticket.

"It is lamentable this traffic accident, these are people looking for better living conditions," Panama's national director of migration Samira Gozaine told the Telemetro broadcaster as she underlined "the risk" people take on this journey.

She said migrant buses to Paso Canoas usually travel at night when there is less traffic and conditions are cooler.

Yadav confronted Gehlot on learning about his engagement and the couple&nbsp;got into a heated argument after which he allegedly killed her in a fit of rage.&nbsp;

“Gehlot was to marry another woman. When his girlfriend came to know about it, she confronted him and insisted that he marry her instead,” police officer Vikram Singh told&nbsp;ANI.

The murder of Shraddha Walkar, a 27-year-old woman killed by her live-in partner, Aftab Amin Poonawala, is eerily similar to Nikki Yadav's murder. In Walker's case, the accused Poonawala used a "saw-like object" to cut her body into 35 pieces, stored them in a 300-liter refrigerator, and then dumped the parts into a nearby Delhi forest.

She was&nbsp;discharged from the hospital once again and is living in a tent along with her husband, Abdul Majid, and their nine nieces and nephews. She has been travelling to Afrin to visit her son Adnan&nbsp;in the hospital every day.&nbsp;

Similarly, a young girl named Miray in southern Turkey was saved from the rubble&nbsp;after 178 hours or seven and half days in Adiyaman.&nbsp;

Miray was attached to a stretcher and carried away by the rescue workers.&nbsp;

Local media is currently working to find her older sister.&nbsp;

A video was circulated which showed rescue workers cheering and chanting "God is great" as she was lifted out.

The men's lawyer Samir Makeen said, "unfortunately, despite the political change in the country, nothing has changed in terms of the rights of the people, it was a change on the surface."

It is just cause we want our territory from the UK, we have also told the US that we are not asking them to move out because initially the whole idea of having that base was to ensure that this part of the world remains a peaceful place."

His visit is part of a series of visits expected from Mauritius to India this year, given that the country has been invited to be a guest country during India's G20 Presidency. Highlighting the close relationship between the two&nbsp;countries, he said, "In terms of support, ties with Mauritius are based on historic and diplomatic ties. It's a very special relationship we have. Over the years we have seen, on major development, infrastructure, it has the footprint of India."

He pointed out that, "India has been supportive of Mauritius's development. The latest major project is a new metro project. We got lots of support in implementing the project and it has already got operational. The new supreme court building has been funded by India."

About the potential collaboration with GIFT city, Gujarat, the minister said, "we feel we can work together with GIFT city. Based on the experience and relationship we have; we can do a lot together. We are working on an MOU we would like to sign with GIFT city, we can collaborate and do things together and make both countries benefit from that."

Regarding the Adani-Hindenburg case, the minister stated, "What we usually have as a reputable jurisdiction is that we don't ignore those kinds of reports. If there is anything of concern, we take action. At the level of regulators, they have conducted their gathering of information to see if there have been breaches according to our legal provisions... Russia building 200-km water pipeline to Ukraine's Donbas region, says Report

Tamil nationalist leader Pazha Nedumaran on Monday claimed that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) chief Velupillai Prabhakaran is alive and will appear in public 'at the right time'. The claim has invited ridicule and has been vehemently slammed by the Sri Lankan media.

Prabhakaran, as per reports, died more than a decade ago. He was killed by the Sri Lankan Army during the last phase of the civil war. His body was even identified by Karuna Amman, LTTE's former leader. A picture of his body was also released back then.&nbsp;

Nedumaran, however, claims that not only is the LTTE chief alive but will also appear in public. He claimed that the former LTTE chief's family was also in touch with him and that he was sharing the news about Prabhakaran's survival with their permission.

As per Deccan Herald, in a press conference on Monday, Nedumaran called his declaration a "true announcement". He said that the current conditions are ideal for Prabhakaran to emerge. According to him, the international political atmosphere and the Sinhalese people's opposition to the Rajapaksa clan have contributed to this.

The massive tremors have caused widespread damage in the two countries. As per the last figures made reported by AFP, the death toll has crossed 11,700. However, many are still trapped under the rubble of buildings&nbsp;and housing complexes that were flattened by this quake.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday warned that the figure would&nbsp;only move upwards and may reach 20,000. As per the organisation, around 23 million people, including 1.4 million children, could be affected by the tremors.

South Korean interior minister suspended over last year’s Halloween crowd crush

A fire that engulfed hundreds of shipping containers at Turkey's Iskenderun Port after massive earthquakes in the region has been extinguished, the defence ministry said on Tuesday, but it was not clear when operations would resume at the port.

Turkey's maritime authority said on Monday that the port, located on the Mediterranean coast in the southern province of Hatay, was damaged due to the earthquake that struck Turkey and neighbouring Syria.

Drone footage showed fierce flames blackening hundreds of containers on the dock, with water jets from a fire truck dwarfed by the scale of the blaze that broke out on Monday. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky.

Turkish shipping agency Tribeca said earlier on Tuesday some cargo areas of Limak port at the Iskenderun complex were still on fire.

The blaze led to the shutdown of all operations at the terminal until further notice and forced freight liners to divert vessels to other ports.

The defence ministry said later on Tuesday the fire was put out thanks to efforts by military helicopters and planes after Monday's efforts to douse the flames from offshore failed.

Leading global container shipping group AP Moller Maersk said there had been significant damage to logistics and transport infrastructure around the earthquake epicentre, including at the Port of Iskenderun.

It said it was looking to re-route ships as needed, given the "severe structural damage, leading to a complete stop of all operations until further notice".

"We will need to perform a change of destination for all bookings bound for the port or already on the water. We are currently planning to divert containers to nearby hubs within operational feasibility or hold at transhipment ports - including Port of Mersin (in Turkey) and Port Said (in Egypt)."

Maersk added in an updated advisory on Tuesday that a fire broke out among containers at the terminal on Monday evening after the earthquake struck and the company was working to assess the potential loss of cargo.

"It's not yet known how long recovery efforts will take and when the port can undergo a full inspection of the damage."

German container shipping line Hapag Lloyd said it was taking shipments from Mersin given the closure of Iskenderun.

A source from a container broker said the fire most likely originated in a container filled with flammable industrial oil, judging by the flames and smoke.

Other containers were toppled on their sides, thwarting access to the emergency services. Authorities had tried in vain to tackle the fire by boat on Monday, with damage nearby from the quake hampering access to the site.

More than 1,200 buildings were destroyed by the earthquake in Hatay province alone.

Iskenderun hosts heavy industries such as steel and is one of the two major container hubs on Turkey's southeastern shores. The port focuses especially on domestic Turkish trade, rather than having a broader regional hub role, according to a shipping source.

Following inspections of damage after the earthquake, the maritime authority said on Monday that operations were continuing in ports apart from Iskenderun.

A tanker docked at Turkey's Ceyhan oil export hub on Tuesday to load Iraqi crude oil, the first since the earthquakes on Monday, according to ship tracking data and a trading source, after bad weather earlier in the day prevented loading.

Leading global container shipping group AP Moller Maersk said there had been significant damage to logistics and transport infrastructure around the earthquake epicentre, including at the Port of Iskenderun. It said it was looking to re-route ships as needed, given the "severe structural damage, leading to a complete stop of all operations until further notice". Maersk added in an updated advisory on Tuesday that a fire broke out among containers at the terminal on Monday evening after the earthquake struck and the company was working to assess the potential loss of cargo. "It's not yet known how long recovery efforts will take and when the port can undergo a full inspection of the damage." A source from a container broker said the fire most likely originated in a container filled with flammable industrial oil, judging by the flames and smoke. More than 1,200 buildings were destroyed by the earthquake in Hatay province alone. Iskenderun hosts heavy industries such as steel and is one of the two major container hubs on Turkey's southeastern shores. The port focuses especially on domestic Turkish trade, rather than having a broader regional hub role, according to a shipping source. Following inspections of damage after the earthquake, the maritime authority said on Monday that operations were continuing in ports apart from Iskenderun. India is sending a plane load of humanitarian support to the country, even as the ambassador hoped, "another plane going to Syria with more humanitarian assistance". Yesterday, Indian and Syrian foreign ministers established contacts as New Delhi stepped up its efforts to help the country.

On the sanctions against the country, the ambassador explained, "The government, countries who impose such sanctions, they know well that they are behind the suffering of Syrian people with such sanctions."

WION: What is the current situation on the ground?

Dr Bassam Alkhatib: Unluckily it's a devastating situation, a big earthquake impacted many areas of Syria. The last number I received, was 850 death and thousands of casualties of different levels. Many buildings are in ruins, many people are still trapped under the said ruins and everybody in Syria is doing all the possible best to handle the situation. The President, when he heard held a meeting of all the authorities relevant to the situation. The foreign minister also held another meeting with representatives of international organisations. With the help of many friendly countries, we have started to handle the situation. The situation is still sensitive.

WION:&nbsp;How do you view&nbsp;India's support?

Dr Bassam Alkhatib: I would love to start by saying that I was attending a successful meeting in Bangalore under the honourable attendance of the PM. When I heard the news, I started coordinating with the people in Syria and India. The fast good, generous response by the Government of India is really unique. Later on, the Indian PM wrote a message of condolences to Syria. The foreign ministers in both countries contacted each other and the high-ranking officials in the MEA, and by the end of yesterday, the plan was ready, and the decision was taken successfully. The visit of the Mos MEA to the embassy is a message from the people and the Government of India towards the people and the Government of Syria. We are with you; we are keeping the position of India with you, and I can say within less than an hour a plane is leaving the Delhi airport of Delhi, going to Syria full of assistance and equipment.

WION: Can you tell us about the international assistance Syria is receiving?

Dr Bassam Alkhatib: Everybody knows we have friends around the world, and all of them took the right position to be with Syria. I am not going to name countries. Some of them have sent three planes full of assistance. Hopefully, India is now contemplating sending a second plane to Syria. The&nbsp;first one is going right now.

WION:&nbsp;Has the Israeli PM offered support to Syria?

Dr Bassam Alkhatib: The source of the problem and evils for Syria is the Israeli occupation of our land, so such statements are nonsense.

 
WION: How is Syria coordinating&nbsp;with Turkey?

Dr Bassam Alkhatib: For us in Syria, we do believe human beings are human beings. We have no problem with the people of Turkey. We don't want to see the people of Turkey suffering.

WION: What kind of coordination were you looking for from Delhi?

Dr Bassam Alkhatib: Absolutely. Even as I was attending the important conference, I was making contact with everyone in India and Syria. So I have just said, colleagues at the MEA had made contact&nbsp;every hour. Late last night, I was able to make contact between the two&nbsp;foreign ministers, and luckily the result you know, the plane is moving to Syria. We really appreciate the people and the Government of India for their support. This is the voice of the south we want to see in the future.

WION: How much will the sanctions against your country impact&nbsp;the relief and rescue operations in your country?

Dr Bassam Alkhatib: Those sanctions are not only impacting the Syrian government but mainly impact the Syrian people. The government, and countries who impose such sanctions, know well that they are behind the suffering of the Syrian people. But when it comes to honest and independent countries, in decisions and policies like India, it is easy to find solutions to any problem, including these sanctions. We appreciate you coming, and we appreciate the visit of MoS MEA. We really appreciate the Indian heart.

He shared that around 20,000 users have already downloaded the beta version of the app and that teachers from around the world have reached out, and thanked him for making his job easier.
