Rahul makes statement to return

Playing for the first time since early May, plenty of question marks were raised on Rahul’s fitness as he missed the West Indies and Ireland tour in July and August. His participation in the Asia Cup was also a big talking point, but all those questions were answered on Monday at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo as he smashed his sixth ODI ton for the national side. Coming into bat in the 18th over, Rahul had plenty of critics to answer while his fitness issue was in question.

The former India vice-captain’s innings consisted of 12 fours and two sixes and India’s batting class excelled despite rainy conditions in the island nation. Rahul scored at a strike rate of more than 100 and showed aggression wherever required. Along with Virat, he stitched a 233-run stand for the third wicket as India dominated the Pakistan batting.

Virat completes 13,000 runs

Virat too was in excellent form as he brought his 77th international ton for Team India. He also competed 13,000 runs in ODI’s and is the quickest to reach the milestone. He remained unbeaten 122 off 94 deliveries with his innings consisting of nine fours and three sixes. He now resides within two hundreds of Tendulkar and could surpass him in the coming months as India have multiple ODI series and tournament to play.

India in their 50 overs put 356/2 as Pakistan will have a big run chase in hand when they take it to the batting duties. The match still has a good possibility of washout with rain having played spoilsport on Sunday.

Asia Cup 2023: KL Rahul makes statement return to ODI set-up, smashes 111 vs Pakistan in Super Four clash

India rode on Virat Kohli's unbeaten 122 and KL Rahul's stunning unbeaten 111 to post a mammoth 356 for 2 versus arch-rivals Pakistan during the rain-hit Super Four clash of the Asia Cup in Colombo, on Monday (September 11). The day commenced on Sunday (September 10) but due to rain and wet outfield, the proceedings were halted with India 147 for 2 in 24.1 overs after being asked to bat first. Losing openers Rohit Sharma (56) and Shubman Gill (58), Kohli and Rahul stitched an unbroken 233-run third-wicket stand to propel India to their joint-highest ODI score versus the Men in Green.

Talking about the Indian innings, the platform was set by openers Rohit Sharma (56) and Shubman Gill (58) as their 121-run opening stand took India off to a flier. Soon, they were reduced to 123 for two.

From thereon, Kohli and Rahul joined hands and their mammoth stand took the game away from Pakistan. Kohli accelerated towards the end whereas Rahul, playing his first international game since early 2023, never looked out of touch to slam his sixth ODI century. Meanwhile, Kohli struck his 47th ODI ton and 77th international century to remain unbeaten on a 94-ball 122*, striking at 129.79.

Speaking to the broadcasters after the Indian innings, Gill said, "Very special for us. Obviously Virat Bhai also completed his century and got to 13000 runs which shows his great inspiration to all of us. The ball was doing a little bit in the initial period and they also bowled well with the new ball, but it was important for us to take them on and put the bad balls away to put the pressure back on them. I think he (Shaheen) was trying to attack the wickets and I wanted to show intent, worked for me yesterday. Asia Cup 2023: KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah return; Shreyas Iyer misses out due to back spasm

India‘s batting sensation KL Rahul is all ready for the upcoming Asia Cup clash against Pakistan as the Men in Blue prepare for the high-voltage encounter. Rahul, having missed the group stage of the Asia Cup, is in line to take a position in the middle-order for the Super Four clash. India will start their Super Four campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday, September 10 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, where Rahul is expected to make his comeback.

Rahul happy to be back in team

“I'm happy to come back into the team and get back the rhythm of being in the middle, playing 100 overs, keeping for 50 overs. I’m fighting for as long as I need to, just getting back that adrenaline of being back on the cricket field. We're playing the best tournaments outside of the World Cup. We're playing some quality teams in the next week, 10 days. So I'm very excited about that. I've prepared really well. I'm confident about myself,” Rahul said on BCCI.TV.

This will be the 31-year-old’s first match for Team India since March, having missed the West Indies and Ireland tours. He was also not available for the final phase of the Indian Premier League (IPL) where Krunal Pandya deputised for him. Rahul’s availability will be a big boost for India but raising question marks on who will come in the Playing XI.

Shreyas Iyer to sit out?

Rahul’s inclusion in the team could likely give a good headache to the team management either Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan could stay way. Considering Ishan’s form in recent times, he is unlikely to be dropped, having scored four consecutive fifties when he has taken to the field in the ODI format recently. On the flip side, the likes of skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill remain the first names on the sheet.

Rahul will have to take advantage of the situation with competition for places as Suryakumar Yadav is also waiting in the wings. Rahul’s wicketkeeping ability will also be under scanner as he tries to force his way into the team.

Asia Cup 2023: KL Rahul ready for Pakistan clash in Super Four stage, says 'I'm confident about myself'

KL Rahul has joined the Indian Team in Colombo upon attaining a fitness clearance certificate from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Rahul, who got picked in the 17-man squad for the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, suffered a niggle during the conditioning camp and got ruled out for the first two games. Participating in his first indoor session in the lead-up to the marquee clash against Pakistan, Rahul looked fine, shared chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

KL Rahul was part of the group, including Hardik Pandya, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill and Shardul Thakur, that trained under the watchful eyes of coach Rahul Dravid and batting coach Vikram Rathore. Rahul started with a few throwdowns and batted in rotation with Iyer. Agarkar said Rahul didn't seem to be under any visible discomfort as he played some drives to perfection.

Both Agarkar and Captain Rohit Sharma insisted on having KL Rahul back in the setup, as he provided stability with bat and gloves in hand. Though in his absence, Ishan Kishan filled in the space quite nicely, hitting a stunning 82 against Pakistan in the first group game. Now, with Rahul back in the side, the right-handed batter could return to the playing XI for the first time since March.

"KL is looking good. We feel this gives us the best balance to try and do well," chief selector Ajit Agarkar had said after Rahul was named in the World Cup squad earlier this week.

"With KL, he was part of the camp in Bengaluru. He looked really good there and has got over his niggle. He played a couple of games over the last two days. I think he kept for 50 overs and batted for around 50 overs too. So he looks good, and we're happy to have him."

ALSO READ: Asia Cup 2023: Former opener lauds Mohammad Rizwan before India clash, claims 'he is a warrior' Both Agarkar and Captain Rohit Sharma insisted on having KL Rahul back in the setup, as he provided stability with bat and gloves in hand. So he looks good, and we're happy to have him." Asia Cup: KL Rahul 'looking fit' upon joining Indian Team in Colombo ahead of Pakistan tie

Team India is all set to bid for its third ODI World Cup as they prepare for the final push before the tournament begins on October 5. With less than a month to go for the start of the ODI World Cup in their own backyard, India announced its 15-member squad with no real surprises. Ishan Kishan, named in the squad, has been knocking on the doors for a permanent spot in the Playing XI, but the question is does he deserve to start ahead of KL Rahul in the ODI World Cup?

In-form batter

Ishan, 25, has been in great form in the recent times that has seen him cement his place in the Playing XI, but with veteran Rahul set for a comeback in the team, his place could be in jeopardy. In the West Indies tour, he scored three consecutive fifties while he continued his best touch with another one in the opening Asia Cup 2023 contest against Pakistan. With four consecutive fifties, he is the most in-form player in the Indian side.

Since the tail end of last year, Ishan Kishan has scored runs left, right, and centre which earned him a place in the team. He scored a brilliant double hundred in the ODI against Bangladesh last December; however, Shubman Gill’s form saw him go down the pecking order. But injuries to players like KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer helped him claw back into the team.

Wicketkeeper option

Ishan’s formidability in the team also attracts a huge interest as the team has struggled since Rishabh Pant’s near-fatal accident last December. The key role initially saw three frontrunners in the form of Rahul, Ishan, and Sanju Samson in the race to take over the duties with gloves. The Mumbai Indians batter is already an established wicketkeeper while providing competition to Rahul and Samson. As things stand, Rahul (in the World Cup squad) has been struggling with injury issues while Samson (not in the World Cup squad) has failed to impress the selectors.

There are also concerns over Rahul’s ability to don the gloves for 50 overs as he is yet to take to the pitch since the final week of the Indian Premier League (IPL). With fitness playing a key role, Ishan looks a perfect fit in the side and has barely struggled with injuries.

Lack of left-hander options

The current Indian batting line-up lacks left-handing batting options, and Ishan provides relief on that front. As anticipated, if India put in a fully-strengthened side, the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel remain the only left-hand batting options. If KL Rahul gets the nod ahead of Ishan, in this case, the Men in Blue will have a left-hand batting option in the top six.

Interestingly, compared to previous World Cup squads, India always had a good left-right combination to play the mind games. In the 2011 ODI World Cup, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, and Suresh Raina were the guaranteed left-hand batting options in the squad while Shikhar Dhawan was another key member during the last decade.

Provided India could struggle with the rotation of strikes and play the mind games, Ishan could be the perfect fit in the team.

KL Rahul’s injury worries

While Ishan has been knocking on the doors for a place in the Playing XI, he has been helped in disguise by the injuries to KL Rahul and Samson’s inability to make the most of his opportunity. While Samson is no threat to Ishan since getting omitted from the ODI World Cup squad, Rahul could be his close compatriot in the team. However, with Rahul still struggling with injuries Ishan has become an automatic starter in the side.

31-year-old Rahul has missed cricketing action since May when he got injured against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). He has since been on treatment and rehabilitation and only returned to the squad for the Asia Cup 2023. However, it was later revealed he won’t be available for the group stages of the Asia Cup and will participate when the Super Four stage begins.

Utility option in team

As things stand, the Indian team management will also have a decent headache if any player from the middle-order or opening slot goes missing. Ishan in this case could be a natural choice in the team as he can fill in at the top and the middle order. The wicket-keeper batter from Patna will be a good option if anyone from the middle-order gets injured and could also fill in for Shubman Gill and skipper Rohit Sharma if required.

India’s ODI World Cup campaign will get underway on October 8 against Australia, while also having a good warm-up during the Asia Cup. Interestingly, India will also face Australia in a three-match ODI series later this month, giving Ishan and Rahul a perfect opportunity to prove their worth in the Playing XI.

Explained | Why Ishan Kishan should be in the India Playing XI during ODI World Cup

After BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced India's 15-man squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup, in India, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir stated that he would prefer to have Ishan Kishan over KL Rahul in the playing XI for the marquee event. Kishan has been in top form, having scored four successive half-centuries, whereas Rahul is yet to get some match practice despite being named in the CWC squad. He will make his comeback in the Super Four round of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, which will give a clear picture of his fitness going ahead.

Analysing the World Cup squad, Gambhir made his preference known by backing Kishan and said on Star Sports, "Tell me something, what is more important to win a championship — name or form? If Rohit (Sharma) or Virat (Kohli) had scored something similar (four consecutive fifties), would you still say that KL Rahul would replace them?" He further pointed out. "The point is, when you're gearing up to win the World Cup, you don't see the name, you judge by their form. You choose the player who can perform and win you the World Cup."

Gambhir added, "I feel Ishan Kishan has done everything he needs to do to be a frontrunner," he further added. Just because he is Ishan Kishan and hasn't played a lot of international cricket, you're saying that KL Rahul should play before him," he said. "But if Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma were in place of Ishan Kishan, would KL Rahul be able to replace them? The answer is 'no'."

Kishan is riding high on his impressive 82 in India's Asia Cup opener versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 02 in Kandy. Coming to bat at No. 5, the left-hander stitched a handy 138-run fifth-wicket stand with Hardik Pandya (87) to take India to 265 all-out in 48.5 overs. Meanwhile, Rahul has been superb for India in the middle-order since early 2020. At No. 5, he averages a healthy 53 with 742 runs in 18 innings along with a ton and seven half-centuries.

It will be interesting to see India's team combination going forward, with both Kishan and Rahul's availability. After the CWC squad announcement, captain Rohit Sharma did not rule out playing both the keeper-batters together in the XI. At present, India is gearing up for its first game in the Super Four round of the Asia Cup, where they once again take on Pakistan on September 10 (Sunday) in Colombo.

'If Kohli or Rohit were...': Gambhir prefers Kishan over Rahul in India's XI after CWC '23 squad announcement

Team India announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup, at home, starting on October 5. From India's current 18-man Asia Cup squad, including a reserve player, the trio of Prasidh Krishna, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma have been dropped as the rest 15 made the cut in the final squad. It is to be noted that all the teams have until September 28 to make any changes to the squad. Thus, some late changes might take place.

After BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar named India's final 15 in a press conference along with captain Rohit Sharma in Sri Lanka, the duo took some questions from the reporters.

Sympathising with the dropped players, Rohit said, "There are no surprises and you can only get 15 in. Some of the guys will be disappointed. I have gone through it and I know how it feels. We have good all-round options and this is the best 15 we could get."

It is to be noted that Rohit played his first 50-over World Cup in 2015 as he was left out of MS Dhoni-led India's victorious squad from the 2011 edition. Back in 2011, when India co-hosted the mega event with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Hitman was overlooked as his competitors Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina got a look-in.

However, Rohit revamped in style and had a decent run in 2015 whereas came to his best in the 2019 edition, ending as the highest run-getter (648 runs with five centuries) in England and Wales. Thus, the 36-year-old has gone through a lot of ups and downs and will surely lend a supporting hand to the players who failed to make the cut.

I know how it feels: Rohit Sharma sympathises with dropped players after India name 15-man squad for CWC '23

On Tuesday (September 05), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's 15-man provisional squad for the forthcoming home ODI World Cup, which kicks off exactly after a month (October 05). Rohit Sharma will lead the star-studded line-up, which comprises 15 of the 18 players currently involved in the Asia Cup. The final 15 sees the omission of Prasidh Krishna, Tilak Varma, and Sanju Samson from the current Asia Cup squad.

It is to be noted that the two-time ODI world champions can make changes to their squad till September 28, hence, there might be some late changes. India will open their campaign versus Australia on October 08 in Chennai whereas the tournament opener will take place on October 05 with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad.

Talking about the squad, India have gone ahead with batters such as Rohit, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, and Virat Kohli along with the two wicketkeeper-batsmen - KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan, whereas all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, and Hardik Pandya will look to add more depth to the squad. Kuldeep Yadav is India's sole specialist spinner, whereas Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah will form the pace attack.

🚨 NEWS 🚨 India’s squad for #CWC23 announced 🔽#TeamIndia — BCCI (@BCCI) September 5, 2023 × There were question marks over Rahul's fitness, but the 31-year-old has been deemed fit and already travelling to Sri Lanka to join the Asia Cup squad, and, hence, made the cut. Rishabh Pant provides update on fitness, shares training video - WATCH

Regular keeper and opener Ishan Kishan is being looked at as a backup for those two positions as BCCI is keen on including KL Rahul in India’s preliminary 15-man World Cup squad to be picked on either Monday or Tuesday. Rahul, who was supposed to undergo a fitness test on Monday, September 4 at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), has been given a clearance certificate and will join the Indian Team in Colombo.

Kishan, who made headlines for his heroic knock against Pakistan after India got reduced to 66 for four at one stage, has more or less sealed his position in the team for the mega event, starting October 5. Kishan’s inclusion closes doors for Sanju Samson, who travelled with the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2023 as a reserve player.

Going by the latest reports, the coach, captain and team management have locked Kishan and middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav as two backup players in the CWC squad.

As India will face Australia in the three-match ODIs before the World Cup begins, the selectors feel the team management would go easy on the players returning from lengthy injury layoffs, including Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul.

Iyer injured his back during the Border-Gavaskar series in March and has been out since, while Rahul suffered a leg injury during the IPL game on May 1. Both underwent rehab at the NCA. Upon attaining full fitness, both got picked in the side for the Asia Cup 2023.

Though Iyer played the game against Pakistan, scoring 14, Rahul was ruled out earlier due to a groin injury.

“Ishan is seen as a backup opener and a wicket-keeping option who can also bat at No. 5. Regular keeper and opener Ishan Kishan is being looked at as a backup for those two positions as BCCI is keen on including KL Rahul in India’s preliminary 15-man World Cup squad to be picked on either Monday or Tuesday.

5. The team management will be very cautious while pushing the players who are coming back from long injury layoffs. Gloveman Ishan Kishan to play as backup keeper, opener as KL Rahul to be included in CWC squad: BCCI source

Out with a groin injury, KL Rahul will undergo a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru on September 4, which will determine his participation in the remainder of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. Also, as per the latest reports, KL Rahul will receive a call-up to the final 15-man squad for the Cricket World Cup 2023, to be picked on September 5.

Though Rahul got picked in the 17-member team for the Asia Cup, his last-minute injury ruled him out of the first two games against Pakistan and Nepal, respectively. The makeshift keeper-batter missed on-field action since getting injured during an IPL game for Lucknow Super Giants on May 1. Upon attaining full fitness, Rahul returned to the team but again got sidelined.

"He should be fine and is likely to be cleared to travel to Sri Lanka," a source close to the information told the Times of India (TOI).

Meanwhile, despite being out of action, the right-handed batter could seal his place in India’s World Cup squad. Reports also suggest that from the Asia Cup-bound players, out of which the final 15-man World Cup would get picked, three players, mainly Samson, Tilak Varma and Prasidh Krishna, could miss out on the cut.

Even though Rahul’s injury news was out before India’s first game against Pakistan in Kandy, Rohit Sharma decided against including Sanju Samson as a spare keeper-batter, instead playing Ishan Kishan in the middle order, a call that paid dividends in the end.

The left-handed batter, who generally opens during the IPL and also for India, and someone who had scored a double hundred in the ODIs, was made to bat number five – a position at which KL Rahul would play once he returns to the setup.

KL Rahul to undergo fitness test on September 4 as BCCI keen on picking him in World Cup squad – Reports

Former India captain and World Cup winner Sunil Gavaskar has raised question marks on KL Rahul’s inclusion in the squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup in his native homeland. Rahul, in the Indian team for the Asia Cup squad, will not participate in the Group stage of the Asia Cup and will miss the clashes against Pakistan and Nepal. However, according to Gavaskar that could his World Cup spot in danger by not playing time before the squad announcement on September 5.

Rahul in big problem?

"You know, mostly, I think the fact that he's not gone is possibly because of the fact that he wants treatment to be continued at the heads of the same physios who have been treating him at the NCA. But then, yes, I think it's a tricky situation because if he's not playing any game before the fifth of September, how do you assess his situation? Because the perspectives about the match's weaknesses is another thing. So, I think it's gonna be a tough call for the selection committee,” Gavaskar said while in conversation with India Today.

Rahul won’t be in international action before September 5, which is the deadline set by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to announce the squad for the ODI World Cup, while changes could still be made until the end of the month. Rahul’s first game for India in the Asia Cup will come after September 5 as he is still nursing his injury at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

Kishan is also expected to start against Pakistan in the Asia Cup opener for India on Saturday when the two arch-rivals meet in Pallekele.

CWC 2023: Former captain makes big remarks on KL Rahul's inclusion, says 'that's gonna be sad, but...'

Ishan Kishan is one player everyone is talking about ahead of the marquee India-Pakistan clash in Pallekele, Kandy, on September 2. With returning makeshift keeper-batter KL Rahul out of the group stages due to a groin injury, Ishan is said to seal the middle-order slot in his absence. Per the latest reports, Rahul Dravid-led coaching staff is not keen on shuffling the top three this close to the World Cup 2023.

The Indian Express reports that Ishan could be tried at number four or five in the middle order during the Pakistan and Nepal games in Asia Cup 2023. Despite knowing what Ishan brings to the table at the top of the order, having scored a double hundred against Bangladesh in an ODI while opening the innings, Ishan will continue to fill Rahul’s shoes in his absence.

Though Sanju Samson has also travelled with the squad as a reserve player, the chances of him finding a place in the side look bleak, with team management alongside coaching staff and captain locking Ishan to play ahead of Sanju, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma.

Since the India team remains unwilling to alter the top three – Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli, having Shreyas Iyer at number four – a position at which he loved batting and scoring runs – would further provide the stability it lacked in the lead-up to this tournament.

Iyer and Rahul were out of action for a long time, but upon attaining full fitness at the NCA, both got named in the 17-man squad for the Asia Cup 2023. The Indian players attended a six-day conditioning camp in Alur, Bengaluru, working on gelling together and preparing for a packed winter before arriving in Colombo for the six-team tournament.

The Indian team, to be on the safer side, also included the Mumbai Indians pair of Suryakumar and Tilak Varma as backups in case of injuries to anyone in the batting order. While Tilak is yet to make his ODI debut, SKY failed to make the most of the chances to seal the middle-order slot.

Therefore, the management is now left with Ishan and Shreyas as the first options for the number four and five slots.

Can Ishan deliver in the middle order?

An opener in the true sense, Ishan is coming off a successful tour of the Caribbean, wherein he scored three successive fifties against the West Indies in T20Is. The left-handed batter in the six matches played in the number four position in ODIs, averages a mere 22.75, having struggled to get going against the spinners.

With the team management deciding on playing Ishan outside of the opening position, it remains to be seen how he will pull off this new role.

Asia Cup 2023: Rahul Dravid, team management pick batting position for Ishan Kishan as Pakistan game looms

The Asia Cup 2023 is all set for kickoff in Multan after riding with a string of controversies as co-hosts Pakistan meet debutants Nepal in the curtain-raiser on Wednesday, August 30. The so-called official hosts of the Asia Cup will carry momentum into the tournament while wearing the tag of the World No.1 ODI team after beating Afghanistan 3-0. However, an injury-plagued Indian side will look to stop the momentum as they search for their eighth title while defending champions Sri Lanka also try to put a spanner in the work for Pakistan.

What to watch out for in Asia Cup 2023?

The arch-rivalry between India and Pakistan will be the talking point of the Asia Cup 2023 as they are entitled to meet more than once. Pakistan fresh from success and carrying momentum with them will try to put India on the back foot who are struggling with injuries to KL Rahul, while also facing a fitness dilemma with Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer. The two nations can meet on three occasions if a certain set of results are met in the tournament.

As expected if both India and Pakistan get the better of Nepal, they will meet on Sunday, September 3 while they are already proposed to meet in the group stage on the upcoming Saturday. India won seven meetings between the sides in the Asia Cup while Pakistan have won five with one match ending in no result.

Other teams

Apart from India and Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will come into the Asia Cup with a lot of buzz. Against all the odds, Sri Lanka got the better of Pakistan and India in the Asia Cup 2022 to lift the trophy. However, their cricket has suffered a recent downfall and only needed the qualifiers to book a place at the ODI World Cup in October. They will be led by Dasun Shanaka and will rely on the services of Kusal Mendis and other key members.

After turmoil of events surrounding Tamim Iqbal’s retirement Bangladesh will be led by veteran star Shakib Al Hasan. The three-time runners-up will have an eye for glory but will have to negotiate their way through India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. They are in the group of Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, where they will try to avoid last year’s embarrassment of early exit. Afghanistan will also look to throw behind the disappointment of the ODI series defeat against Pakistan and punch their ticket in the latter stage of the Asia Cup.

Asia Cup Preview: World No.1 Pakistan eye momentum before World Cup but can India, SL put spanner in the work?

India coach Rahul Dravid gave an honest answer to the calls of 'experimenting' being done by the team in the last few series and said that they were not experimenting for the sake of it. The head coach made the comments at the end of training camp at NCA in Bengaluru as India gear up for Asia Cup 2023.

"To be very honest with you, this word experimentation gets thrown around a lot without actually sometimes being thought through," Dravid said. "It's not that we are trying to sometimes experiment for the sake of experimenting. Sometimes there are specific reasons why you have to do certain things."

Dravid further said that the much-discussed no. 4 and 5 position players were 'fixed' about an year and half back but injuries to those players namely KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant forced them to try and rotate other players.

"Just to give you an example, the No. 4 and 5 spots seem to get discussed and talked about a lot," he continued. "It gives the impression that we don't have clarity on who was going to be there, but to be very honest with you, I could have told you 18 or 19 months ago the top two-three candidates we were looking at for the No. 4, 5 slots. It was always going to be Shreyas [Iyer], KL [Rahul] and Rishabh [Pant] for those spots, right?

"If you look back on some of the teams that we picked from 18 months ago, there was no doubt in our minds. Obviously, it's unfortunate that all three of them ended up with injuries in the space of two months. What are the odds of that happening? And I don't think we can, nobody can, calculate for that, especially with the limited number of games that we had in one-day cricket," he added.

Notably, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have made a comeback to the Indian side for the Asia Cup. While Iyer has been declared fit to play, Rahul, on the other hand, has been ruled out of first two games of the regional tournament. India start their Asia Cup campaign against Pakistan on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Sometimes there are specific reasons why you have to do certain things." Also Read: Would've been good if Asia Cup 2023 was held entirely in Pakistan, says Babar Azam ahead of Nepal tie Dravid further said that the much-discussed no. India coach Rahul Dravid answers all 'experimenting' questions, says didn't do for sake of it

On Tuesday (August 29), Team India head coach Rahul Dravid confirmed that Indian batter KL Rahul is set to miss the first two games in the Asia Cup. The continental tournament, which will be held in the ODI format in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, gets underway on Wednesday evening (August 30) with co-hosts Babar Azam & Co. taking on Nepal in Multan, Pakistan. Rohit Sharma-led India begin their campaign on September 02, in Pallekele, versus arch-rivals Pakistan. Thus, Rahul will be a big miss for the Men in Blue during their Kandy leg, where they also play Nepal on September 04 (Monday).

It is to be noted that the middle-order batter was named in India's final 17-member squad for the Asia Cup after he recovered from his original injury, i.e. a hip injury he suffered during IPL 2023. However, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar made it clear that the the 31-year-old has picked up a niggle, unrelated to his original injury, and will be closely monitored for the initial few games in the Asia Cup. With him out of action, Ishan Kishan is a strong contender to replace him in the line-up.

'The news is not good for Indian fans'

Ahead of India's Asia Cup opener, versus Pakistan, Mohammed Kaif -- India's former batter -- opined on Rahul's fitness. Speaking to Star Sports, Kaif pointed out, "This means KL Rahul’s injury could aggravate. If he is unfit now, there is no guarantee that he will be fit after two games. The news is not good for Indian fans because Rahul plays very well at No. 5 in ODIs. His stats are very good."

Kaif further stated, "He knows how to shift gears, is able to play big shots, and knows how to stabilize innings. You won’t get a replacement even if you play Ishan Kishan. Apart from wicket-keeping, Rahul also provides a finishing touch."

Rahul has been exceptional for India at No. 5, scoring 742 runs in 18 innings at an average of 53 along with an impressive strike rate of 99.33. Further, he has seven fifties and a solitary ton as well.

Kaif shared his take on India's likely playing XI after Rahul's absence. While Shubman Gill has struggled with the bat in recent times, managing only 102 runs in the West T20Is, the former cricketer feels he has to be in the top order. “Gill’s form has slightly dropped. He didn’t fare well on the West Indies tour, but I think the Kandy pitch will suit him. He loves pace and bounce. The ball will move, so the challenge will always be there for the top 3," added Kaif.

'No guarantee...': Kaif concerned over KL Rahul's fitness as India batter set to miss Kandy leg of Asia Cup

Team India head coach Rahul Dravid has confirmed that Shreyas Iyer is fully fit for the Asia Cup 2023 edition, which kicks off on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan. The Men in Blue, under Rohit Sharma, will begin their campaign on September 02 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. All eyes are on India's middle-order as Rohit & Co. are desperate to finalise their batting line-up ahead of the home ODI World Cup, which gets underway on October 05 in India. Hence, Iyer and Rahul's participation in the continental tournament will be very essential.

'Shreyas Iyer is fully fit'

Speaking at the press conference, on Tuesday (August 29), after India's training camp in Alur, Karnataka, Dravid confirmed Iyer's fitness and said, "Shreyas Iyer is fully fit, he has ticked all the boxes - batted and fielded a lot in the camp. The only thing he has missed is the game time. Looked pretty good, and it will be all about giving him more game time, Hopefully, it will come in the Asia Cup. In terms of fitness, he has done really well, has batted really well, ticked all the boxes."

However, Dravid made it official that KL Rahul won't feature in India's opening two games of the Asia Cup. "Both him (KL Rahul) and Shreyas are in the same boat. Slightly cautious approach with KL (due to a niggle, unrelated to his original injury). We are hoping he will only miss the first two games and will be available for the latter part of the tour," added Dravid.

India are placed in Pool A comprising Pakistan and Nepal. The top two teams from both groups -- Group B comprises Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh -- will proceed to the Super Four before the summit clash takes place on September 17. The continental tournament, being jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, is vital for India as they gear up for the home ODI World Cup, which kicks off on October 05, and, thus, they will be adamant about fixing their middle-order issues. It remains an area of concern for the Men in Blue given Rahul and Iyer's lengthy injury breaks.

Asia Cup: KL Rahul out of first two games against Pakistan and Nepal, confirms coach Rahul Dravid

Former India coach Sanjay Bangar warned Team India to consider KL Rahul in the Playing XI only if he is fit to play as a wicketkeeper-batter. The veteran Indian star returned to the team for the Asia Cup 2023 as he tries to prove his fitness for the upcoming ODI World Cup. However, there are doubts over Rahul’s fitness as few predict he won’t be able to keep wickets.

Bangar opines on Rahul’s role

"I think keeper batter because no one bowls in the top 5 of Team India, so it means if you want 6 bowling options you should have a player in your top 5 who can bowl or he should be a wicket-keeper batsman. So, I feel if KL Rahul plays the role of a wicket-keeper batsman, I believe then only he should be considered in the playing XI because in that way the team's balance will be maintained," Bangar told Star Sports.

According to Bangar, India should consider players with utility roles in the Playing XI who offer batting and bowling options. The Indian team’s utility factor could play a major role in determining the team’s success during the World Cup. For Rahul, he thinks he should come into the team as a wicketkeeper-batter and offer more to the team.

India have the services of Ishan Kishan, who is most likely to make the ODI World Cup squad as a backup if not first-choice wicketkeeper. Kishan is in great form for the team and offers batting along with donning the keeping gloves. India already have players like Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli as only batting options and are not relying on their bowling services.

Who could miss out on World Cup squad?

Currently, the 17-member squad for the Asia Cup will have to prove their worth before it is trimmed to 15 players for the ODI World Cup. The deadline to announce the World Cup squad is soon approaching as the selectors are keeping a close eye on the developments of Shreyas Iyer and Rahul. The selectors are likely to drop one batter and one bowler from the Asia Cup squad to make the final World Cup contingent.

If both Rahul and Iyer prove their fitness in the Asia Cup, Tilak Varma looks to be the natural option to be dropped for the World Cup while Prasidh Krishna could also have to sit at home for the big event in India.

CWC 2023: Former coach worried over batting balance in middle order, says 'if KL Rahul plays the role...'

The cricketing fraternity is eagerly waiting for the commencement of the forthcoming Asia Cup, to be jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The tournament begins on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan with the Babar Azam-led Men in Green hosting Nepal. The biggest clash is on September 02 when Rohit Sharma's Team India will lock horns with arch-rivals Pakistan in Pallekele, Sri Lanka.

India, Pakistan and Nepal are placed in Group A whereas the other group comprises Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. It is to be noted that India and Pakistan can meet thrice in the upcoming edition, including the final which will be held on September 17 in Colombo. For now, all eyes are on India's opening clash. Ahead of the continental tournament's commencement, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar picked his India XI.

'KL Rahul would.....'

Manjrekar told ESPNCricinfo, "My three seamers would be Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami. Hardik Pandya would be my fourth seamer. My spinners would be Jadeja and Kuldeep. My opener would be Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma. No. 3 batter would be Virat Kohli. KL Rahul would play because he is the keeper."

It is to be noted that when Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors named India's squad early this week, the chief selector revealed that Rahul has picked up a niggle while recovering from a thigh injury (the niggle is unrelated to his original injury). Thus, India have kept plenty of options for the middle-order with the inclusion of uncapped player Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav in the final 17. In addition, Sanju Samson is the sole travelling reserve player.

Manjrekar has included Rahul in the playing XI and feels that either Shreyas Iyer or Varma could get the nod in the middle-order. “Either Shreyas Iyer or Tilak Varma could play [in the middle-order]. I am saying this because in India’s first-choice side XI, the first seven (six) batters, including Hardik Pandya, are all right-handers. Somewhere, India will have to fit in a left-hander in Tilak Varma. This is a problem India has,” Manjrekar added.

Both Iyer and Rahul are returning to the Indian team after long injury layoffs, hence, all eyes will be on the duo in the Asia Cup, which will be followed by the home ODI World Cup, beginning on October 05.

'KL Rahul would.....' Manjrekar told ESPNCricinfo, "My three seamers would be Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami. Hardik Pandya would be my fourth seamer. My spinners would be Jadeja and Kuldeep. My opener would be Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma. No. 3 batter would be Virat Kohli. KL Rahul would play because he is the keeper." Also read: No one is a favourite in Asia Cup, says Sourav Ganguly ahead of India's opening tie vs arch-rivals Pakistan It is to be noted that when Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors named India's squad early this week, the chief selector revealed that Rahul has picked up a niggle while recovering from a thigh injury (the niggle is unrelated to his original injury). Manjrekar's India XI for Asia Cup clash with Pakistan Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer/ Tilak Varma, KL Rahul (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj Here is India’s squad for Asia Cup 2023 – Rohit Sharma (C), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammad Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Prasidh Krishna WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. No Ishan Kishan! Sanjay Manjrekar picks star-studded India XI for Asia Cup opener vs Pakistan

The Indian players are arriving in Alur, Bengaluru, for a six-day conditioning camp, as the focus remains on KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer returning after injuries. Ever since Yuvraj and Dhoni retired, he has filled that slot: Ashwin heaps praise on Rahul ahead of Asia Cup

On Monday (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's 17-man squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup.
Although Rahul is part of the Asia Cup squad, chief selector Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma, while addressing the media, made it clear that he has a niggle but there is nothing serious with regard to the keeper-batter's fitness. Kris Srikkanth lashes out at Agarkar-led BCCI selectors for including KL Rahul in India's Asia Cup squad

On Monday (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a strong 17-man squad for Team India's campaign in the forthcoming Asia Cup. The squad includes KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer as the duo mark their return after a long injury layoff. Rahul got injured during IPL 2023, where he was leading the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Iyer got ruled out during the middle of 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home, early this year. Rahul suffered a thigh injury whereas Iyer's back issues resurfaced.

Thus, Iyer and Rahul were badly missed by the Indian team management as the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led national side tried several players in the middle order to fill the void created by the the two. With India preparing hard for the home ODI World Cup, set to kick off on October 5, the Men in Blue will be relieved to see the return of Iyer and Rahul for the continental tournament, which commences on August 30. The two will be eager to make the most of the opportunities with only a handful of games left before India's ODI WC opener, on October 8.

After Iyer and Rahul's return, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir reacted to the development and believes the two have to perform if they want to start in the playing XI in India's World Cup opener, where they face Australia in Chennai.

'It’s great to have Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back, but they will need to perform'

Gambhir said on Star Sports, "One thing is clear; there is no front runner for a position when you are trying to win the World Cup. Form and impact are important. The players who are in form need to be picked, rather than those who are not. Let it be Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, or anybody. If Tilak Varma is in better form than someone, if Suryakumar Yadav is in better form than Shreyas Iyer or KL Rahul or Ishan Kishan, then you need to start that player. Because the World Cup comes once in four years, you don’t go and see who is a front runner or not. Who is in the best form after the Asia Cup and the Australia series, just as Rohit Sharma had said, there is no guarantee for anybody’s position. It’s great to have Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back from injury, but they will need to perform if they want to get in the starting lineup of the squad."

He added, “I will only look at the form, not the name. Because if you want to win the World Cup, only form and impact from the players will help you win. A good thing the selectors have done is picked Suryakumar Yadav in the team. Because Suryakumar Yadav may not have the consistency, but he has the impact, and the team management should find the most efficient way to use him. So, in my opinion, whether it’s KL Rahul or Shreyas Iyer or anybody, we will look at their form after the Asia Cup and which team plays in the Australia series. That series will determine who plays in the World Cup rather than deciding after the series is over, that who will play in the World Cup. Because there should be a series before the World Cup where your main squad plays together.”

'It’s great to have Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back, but they will need to perform' Gambhir said on Star Sports, "One thing is clear; there is no front runner for a position when you are trying to win the World Cup. It’s great to have Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back from injury, but they will need to perform if they want to get in the starting lineup of the squad." He added, “I will only look at the form, not the name. Because there should be a series before the World Cup where your main squad plays together.” Also read: 'Where is old Hardik Pandya who...?': Former Indian star backs all-rounder as next captain, shares THIS advice Rohit & Co. are placed in Group A with Pakistan and Nepal in the upcoming Asia Cup. Great to have them back but they need to perform: Gambhir on Rahul, Iyer's comeback for Asia Cup

Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul return to the ODI side as BCCI announces 17-man squad for the Asia Cup starting on August 30. Regular captain Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli alongside several first-team players retain their places as middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer also made it to the list.

The Indian Cricket Board, after days of speculations, brought in seamers Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami, who, alongside Bumrah, will form the pace bowling attack for the upcoming Cricket World Cup.
Commenting on the squad and much-debated number 4 position, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly said that there are enough options in the squad and anyone can play at the position.

Sourav Ganguly brushes aside no. 4 debate after Asia Cup squad announcement, says 'anyone can play'

As India gear up for the upcoming Asia Cup and ICC ODI World Cup, the anticipation around the squad is getting quite an attention. While the date to announce the provisional squad for the World Cup is September 5, India will be naming their Asia Cup squad on August 21.

The main conundrum India selectors face is the wicketkeeper. Ever since Rishabh Pant got injured in a horrific car crash in December last year, the place has acted as a musical chair between KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson. While Rahul is the better batsman among all three, Kishan is closest to Pant in terms of style and aggression.

Talking about the conundrum, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly thinks that India should go with Kishan as their wicketkeeper-batsman.

"Pant is the best wicketkeeper in the country, but you can see Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul (depending on his fitness); these two will be right up in Rohit's and Rahul's minds. I like Ishan Kishan because he just opens up the game for any team. I am sure Dravid will keep him in his plans," Ganguly said at a recent event.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri, speaking to Star Sport a while back, had also said that giving Rahul both responsibilities (batting and keeping) in a tournament like Asia Cup is a 'no-no.'

"See when you're talking of a player (KL Rahul) who's not played and is recovering from injury. To think of him in the XI of the Asia Cup, you're asking a little too much of the player himself. And then you're talking about keeping. When a guy comes from an injury, the range of movement and things of that sort, so that's a no-no," Shastri had explained.

The Asia Cup starts August 30 with India playing its first match on September 2 against Pakistan. The World Cup is, however, a bit away with the scheduled date being October 5.

Sourav Ganguly picks wicketkeeper between KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan for India's Asia Cup squad

The wait for India’s Asia Cup 2023 squad could finally come to an end on Monday, August 21 according to the latest reports from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It is expected that skipper Rohit Sharma will attend the selection meeting in New Delhi on Monday. The board is also expecting positive news on the fitness of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who have been rehabilitating at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

Rahul, Iyer fit?

The much-anticipated team announcement for the Asia Cup has been delayed due to the medical reports of Iyer and Rahul. The duo was not at a hundred per cent at the start of the week and could have missed out in the final selection, however, a good four-five days recovery period has boosted their chances of a return to the team. The BCCI wanted both the players to be match-fit before announcing the squad.

As things stand, the selection panel led by former pacer Ajit Agarkar will discuss with skipper Rohit before opting to include the duo. According to reports, both Iyer and Rahul are expected to make the 15-member squad (or extended) and will travel to Sri Lanka.

Players like Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan along with skipper Rohit are guaranteed to make the squad. Ishan is expected to be the backup option as a wicketkeeper if the team management decides to play Rahul as first-choice keeper. Shardul Thakur will also make the squad as back-up to Hardik Pandya.

Sanju Samson looks to be the biggest name likely to be omitted if Rahul makes the squad, while the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma would also have to leave the national team set-up with the competition for places in the team. The major talking point for the selectors will be the use of extra spinner as India have three frontline spinners in their ranks.

As things stand, all three spinners – Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel have a strong case to make the squad. With a lack of left-handers in the squad and batting ability as plus, Axar is almost guaranteed to be in the squad. This could mean, India could either take one extra spinner or risk dropping either Kuldeep or Chahal.
Asia Cup 2023: Rohit Sharma to attend selection meeting in Delhi on Aug 21; Rahul, Iyer likely to return

Jasprit Bumrah will lead a second-string Indian team in the three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, with the series opener on Friday (August 18). However, the main focus is already on the forthcoming 50-over Asia Cup, which kicks off on August 30 (to be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka). The continental tournament will be an ideal dress rehearsal for Rohit Sharma & Co. for the home ODI World Cup which commences on October 5 in Ahmedabad. At present, most are awaiting the start of the Asia Cup with the Indian squad likely to be announced on August 20.

Before India's official squad announcement, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh picked his 15-man Indian team for the multi-nation tournament. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the veteran firstly spoke at length on India's tour of West Indies -- where they lost the five T20Is -- and then shifted focus to the Asia Cup.

Harbhajan said, "I thought India would win that series easily (the WI T20Is, which Hardik Pandya & Co. lost 2-3). But the result has left many shocked and concerned. I was taken aback as well because West Indies, a team that did not make the World Cup, beat us. This indeed is a big achievement for West Indies, but a major concern for India. Yes, Kohli and Rohit weren't there, and they won't stay for long, but this young brigade that had toured West Indies has learned a lot from this. I previously said that India can make 2-3 teams, and they still can, but the results are yet to reflect."

Bhajji then shifted focus to the Asia Cup and picked his 15, including 'proven player' KL Rahul, but his list didn't include Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer. Both Iyer and Rahul are nearing full fitness at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru. However, there are more positive developments with regard to the latter's fitness. On Rahul, Harbhajan said, "He is a proven player and if you want to see him in the World Cup squad, this is the right time to bring him back."

The former off-spinner's list didn't comprise Samson either, who averages 55.71 in ODIs. Instead, he went ahead with Suryakumar Yadav who has averaged less than 12 in the last nine innings in the format. Moreover, he backed Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal as India's spin-bowling options and added Tilak Verma in the mix as well.

India open their campaign on September 02 versus Pakistan in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. They are placed in Group A along with the Men in Green and Nepal.

I previously said that India can make 2-3 teams, and they still can, but the results are yet to reflect." Both Iyer and Rahul are nearing full fitness at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru. However, there are more positive developments with regard to the latter's fitness. On Rahul, Harbhajan said, "He is a proven player and if you want to see him in the World Cup squad, this is the right time to bring him back." The former off-spinner's list didn't comprise Samson either, who averages 55.71 in ODIs. Harbhajan Singh's 15-man India squad for Asia Cup: Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, KL Rahul; Axar Patel (16th man) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
