<h2><strong>In-form batter</strong></h2>

<p>Ishan, 25, has been in great form in the recent times that has seen him cement his place in the Playing XI, but with veteran Rahul set for a comeback in the team, his place could be in jeopardy. In the West Indies tour, he scored three consecutive fifties while he continued his best touch with another one in the opening Asia Cup 2023 contest against Pakistan. With four consecutive fifties, he is the most in-form player in the Indian side.</p>

While Samson is no threat to Ishan since getting omitted from the ODI World Cup squad, Rahul could be his close compatriot in the team. However, with Rahul still struggling with injuries Ishan has become an automatic starter in the side.</p>

<p>31-year-old Rahul has missed cricketing action since May when he got injured against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). He has since been on treatment and rehabilitation and only returned to the squad for the Asia Cup 2023. <p>India's ace wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant provided a major update on his recovery as he was seen doing some decent-intensity workout at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Pant shared the video of his training on social media platform Instagram.</p>

<p>Kishan, who made headlines for his heroic knock against Pakistan after India got reduced to 66 for four at one stage, has more or less sealed his position in the team for the mega event, starting October 5. Kishan’s inclusion closes doors for Sanju Samson, who travelled with the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2023 as a reserve player.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Going by the latest reports, the coach, captain and team management have locked Kishan and middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav as two backup players in the CWC squad.</p>

It doesn't want any of the players getting injured right before the World Cup as that can disrupt their plans in a big way. <p>“There has been no complaint when he (Rahul) bats. It's while squatting that he has been feeling his hamstring. That has got much better in the past week. <p>"Just to give you an example, the No. 4 and 5 spots seem to get discussed and talked about a lot," he continued. "It gives the impression that we don't have clarity on who was going to be there, but to be very honest with you, I could have told you 18 or 19 months ago the top two-three candidates we were looking at for the No. 4, 5 slots. It was always going to be Shreyas [Iyer], KL [Rahul] and Rishabh [Pant] for those spots, right?</p>

<p>"If you look back on some of the teams that we picked from 18 months ago, there was no doubt in our minds. Obviously, it's unfortunate that all three of them ended up with injuries in the space of two months. What are the odds of that happening? And I don't think we can, nobody can, calculate for that, especially with the limited number of games that we had in one-day cricket," he added.</p>

<p>Notably, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have made a comeback to the Indian side for the Asia Cup. VVS Laxman said he would play if he gets fit in time and urged us to keep him in the team. But on the day of the match, he was not fit. And then we thought of drafting Rohit Sharma in. But Rohit played football and injured himself. After that, Wriddhiman Saha made his debut. On that day, our selection panel decided not to be desperate. On the day of selection, if you're not fit, don't pick that player. You're making it look as though Indians don't have talent. You have created a situation like that."</p>

The squad includes KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer as the duo mark their return after a long injury layoff. Rahul got injured during IPL 2023, where he was leading the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Iyer got ruled out during the middle of 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home, early this year. While Iyer and Rahul will be making a comeback for the first time since injury, Bumrah is already playing against Ireland in T20Is as the captain.</p>

<p>Commenting on the squad and much-debated number 4 position, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly said that there are enough options in the squad and anyone can play at the position.</p>

Sachin also started at No. 6; when he opened, he became a world-class player.</p>

<p>"So anybody can play at No. 4. There's Virat Kohli for No. 4; there's Shreyas Iyer once he does well at the Asia Cup; there's KL Rahul. India has enormous talent."</p>

<p>Ganguly also opined that one position does not make much of a difference and all India need to do is select a player and stick with him at number 4.</p>

<p>"One batting slot doesn't make so much of a difference because you don't win a World Cup just with No. 4. There's no hard and fast rule that you need someone at No. 4, all you need to do is decide and let them play [at that position]," said the former BCCI chief.</p>

<p>The Asia Cup, which starts August 30, will be followed by the ODI World Cup and the current squad is expected to play in the ICC mega event, provided there are no injuries.</p>

<p>In an interaction with news agency PTI, former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad said, "First of all, we should know whether Shreyas Iyer is fit or not. So, in case, if Shreyas Iyer is ruled out, in the present scenario, one guy who fits the bill is Tilak Varma, because of his versatility, because of his ability to play fast bowling and spin bowling and also because of his ability to switch the gears as and when required. More than anything else, we don't have a left-hander at the top of the order. So all these things will definitely go in favour of Tilak Varma."</p>
