<h2><strong>Rahul pulls off stunner</strong></h2>

<p>On the first ball of the 24th over, an away going delivery from Mohammed Siraj saw Hasan flick the ball towards the fine leg. However, the ball did not travel much and went fine in the direction of the wicketkeeper Rahul. The stumper had pulled off a stunner with a low left-hand catch, as he dived to his left. He caught the ball single-handedly to produce a catch of the tournament moment. Hasan would be dismissed for 3 off 13 while Siraj enjoyed his first wicket of the day.</p>

<p>Earlier in the match India had a big injury scare as star all-rounder Hardik Panyda got injured in his first over. He had an awkward fall that resulted in him damaging his ankle and was unable to complete his over. As a consequence, former India skipper Virat Kohli had to be called in to complete the over. This reminded me of the 2003 World Cup when Ashish Nehra got injured while bowling against Namibia.</p>

<p>Pandya was later taken for scans and did not participate in the rest of the Bangladesh batting innings. At the time of writing Bangladesh were 170/4 in 36 overs. Towhid Hridoy (12) and Mushfiqur Rahim (26) were in the middle for Bangladesh as they tried to steady the innings after quick-fire wickets. Earlier they had started on the front foot as Tanzid Hasan (51) and Litton Das (66) stitched a 93-run stand for the opening wicket.</p>

<h2><strong>KOHLI AND RAHUL'S CANDID CHAT</strong></h2>

<p>In their conversation, Kohli recalled the stunning 233-run third-wicket stand with Rahul in India's Super Four clash versus Pakistan in the Asia Cup but rated their recent stand 'bit more special.'</p>

<p>Kohli started by saying, "Talking about the special partnership that I and KL had, we had one in the Asia Cup as well but this was a bit more special." He then asked Rahul, "How does it feel, how is the body feeling firstly."</p>

<p>Rahul replied, "Tired. I won't lie, you know how it was the only chat after I think 50 or 70 runs of the partnership was let's conserve energy. Let's not run the twos but once you hit it in the gap then I guess instincts take over and we end up running. It was a tough day but it could get our World Cup journey started with a good victory."</p>

<p>Kohli recalled India's top-order failure in Chennai and said, "I know the situation was not ideal when you came in, you were all over the place you were still padding up while walking in. The first thing I told you was that it was a quick turnaround. It was quite bizarre to be honest the start was quite bizarre." He then asked his partner, "What was your feeling when you were walking in?"</p>

<p>Rahul was quick to respond, "I never expected it, you do lose a couple of quick wickets sometimes when the ball is doing something but not like that it still takes 4-5 overs. It doesn't all happen in 1.5 overs or 2 overs time. I just came and sat, I just had a shower, the minute I sat down Ishan got out. I had to rush back to get taped and started wearing my pad."</p>

<p>In India's heartbreaking CWC '19 semi-final loss versus New Zealand, chasing 240, the then Kohli-led Indian team were 5 for 3 and struggled to get past the finish line,&nbsp;losing by 18 runs. In their very next outing in the World Cup, i.e. their opener in the 2023 edition, the Men in Blue once again struggled early on&nbsp;but had Kohli-Rahul who bailed them out of the crisis.&nbsp;</p>

CWC 2023 - 'Never expected that': Rahul recalls India's early collapse vs Australia in chat with Kohli - Watch

<p>India batsman KL Rahul missed out on a century as he hit a shot too well vs Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup match on October 8. Rahul was batting on 91 when India needed five runs to win. The batter hit a lofted extra cover drive a bit too nicely in the air and the ball sailed over the boundary for a six, handing India a six-wicket win.</p>

<p>After the shot, which came in the 42nd over off Pat Cummins, Rahul went down on his haunches, realising what he had done, albeit with a smile as India won the game. Have a look at the shot here:</p>

<p>“I was (nervous), you don't want to start your innings like that, credit to the Aussie's bowlers as they bowled in good areas but some loose shots as well, when you have that kind of target you want to score as much as possible in the powerplay, but credit to Virat and KL on how they went about the chase.</p>

<p>Overcoming a jittery start, India romped to a comfortable six-wicket victory over Australia in their opening&nbsp;World Cup match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. KL Rahul was adjudged Player of the Match for his formidable 97-run innings that was laced with eight boundaries and two maximums.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking at the post-match ceremony, KL Rahul revealed he and Virat Kohli decided to pursue the match like Test cricket after coming in to bat when the scoreboard wore a sorry look.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Quite honestly not a lot of conversation, I thought I’d get a good shower and get a break. I was just trying to get my breath back. Virat said there's a bit of help in this wicket, so we have to play proper shots and think like we're in Test cricket for a little time. There was a bit of help for the pacers with the new ball, and then the spinners also," said Rahul.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Quizzed about the nature of the pitch which was on the slower side, Rahul said dew played a part during the second innings.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I think it remained the same for most part of the game. There was a bit of help for the fast bowlers in the start and the spinners came in. I think dew played a part in the end. The ball did come on a little better but the wicket was still two-paced. It was a good cricket wicket and that's what you get in the southern parts of India."</p>

<p>Speaking on the repercussions of that particular dropped catch, Josh Hazlewood, who picked two wickets in his first over, defended Marsh, saying Alex Carey running in towards him caught him off-guard, resulting in putting it down.&nbsp;</p>

Rahul has been named as the India captain for the first two games before regular captain Rohit Sharma will return for the series finale.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to Sportskeeda, Sreesanth opined that the Indian team management can opt to rest ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah -- who also made his international comeback last month after an 11-month break -- if there is a niggle.</p>

<p>Bumrah has been named in both the ODI squad for the Australia series -- for the opening two encounters and final ODI.</p>

<p>Sreesanth said, “It will be interesting to see the kind of pitches they offer to Australia in the series. But I want Bumrah to be rested if there is a niggle. Let him decide how his body is feeling. He deserves to make that decision and choose his priority. The use of fast bowlers would be crucial. They should rotate them and the fast bowlers should focus on bowling in partnerships."</p>

The match kicked off on Sunday afternoon (September 10) with Babar Azam-led Men in Green opting to bowl first at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Captain Rohit Sharma's 56 and Shubman Gill's 58 set the platform for India before, at 147 for 2 in 24.1 overs, persistent rain and&nbsp;wet outfield pushed the game to the reserve day&nbsp;on Monday.</p>

<p>On Monday, Kohli and Rahul's unbeaten 233-run third-wicket stand took India to 356 for 2. In reply, Kuldeep Yadav's 5 for 25 dismissed Pakistan for 128 in 32 overs to take the Men in Blue to a massive 228-run win, their biggest ODI win,&nbsp;in terms of runs,&nbsp;over the arch-rivals. After the clash, Rahul revealed the last-minute change of calls which led to him being added to the playing XI.</p>

<p>Rahul, who is returning to international cricket after a long gap following&nbsp;a hip injury, was not supposed to play the Super Four tie versus Pakistan. However, Shreyas Iyer -- another returnee from a long injury break (due to pertinent back issues) -- skipped the match due to a back spasm, forcing Rahul's early comeback in the XI.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Talking to the Asia Cup broadcasters, Rahul revealed how he was added to the final XI at the last minute. "You know once you come back from injury, it's really hard and I have had a lot of injuries in last few years so it's been very tough but when you have been sitting out for five months, watching matches on TV, you are ready to do anything after returning. Really happy that I could do the job for the team," Rahul said.</p>

I had come only knowing that I would be carrying water and had brought only one full-sleeved t-shirt.&nbsp;So, at the last minute, the manager had to run to the hotel and get my stuff. But this has not happened for the first time, so mentally, I know what to do when I am thrown in the ring."</p>

<p>The Indian team management will be relieved with Rahul's fitness. The former white-ball vice-captain not only slammed an impressive 106-ball 111, laced with 12 fours and 2 sixes at&nbsp;104.72 -- but also kept wickets for the majority part of the Pakistan run-chase. <h2><strong>Why Rahul did not keep wickets?</strong></h2>

<p>When Pakistan came out to bat in their innings at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, few were left surprised for Rahul as he opted to participate in the outfield duties. According to the team management plans, Rahul is still the first-choice wicketkeeper option to get&nbsp;Shreyas Iyer accommodated in the team. However, Rahul’s impressive knock for the team with an unbeaten 111 has seen him take a defensive approach.</p>

<p>With Ishan Kishan already a proven wicketkeeper option in the team, the management opted to use Rahul as an outfield player. This would give the Karnataka batter a well-deserved relief having batted for more than 30 overs during the batting stint.</p>

<p>The situation could be a good headache to have for Team India as Ishan has also been in red-hot form with the bat. Rahul’s impressive return with the bat on Monday could cement his place in the Playing XI for the upcoming ODI World Cup.</p>

<p>KL Rahul has joined the Indian Team in Colombo upon attaining a fitness clearance certificate from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Rahul, who got picked in the 17-man squad for the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, suffered a niggle during the conditioning camp and got ruled out for the first two games. Participating in his first indoor session in the lead-up to the marquee clash against Pakistan, Rahul looked fine, shared chief selector Ajit Agarkar.</p>

<p>KL Rahul was part of the group, including Hardik Pandya, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill and Shardul Thakur, that trained under the watchful eyes of coach Rahul Dravid and batting coach Vikram Rathore. Rahul started with a few throwdowns and batted in rotation with Iyer. Agarkar said Rahul didn't seem to be under any visible discomfort as he played some drives to perfection.&nbsp;</p>
