Israel-Hamas war: How did 2 years of conflict affect Gaza - In numbers

US President Donald Trump on Monday (Sep 29) presented a detailed plan to end the Gaza war, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu backing it and warning Hamas to accept or face further military action. The proposal mixes security guarantees for Israel with promises of aid, governance reforms, and economic revival for Gaza. Here are the 10 key takeaways:
1. Immediate ceasefire and hostage release
If both sides accept, Israel will halt all military operations. Hamas will have 72 hours to return hostages from October 7, alive or dead. Israel will free 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life terms, 1,700 Gazans detained during the war, and exchange the remains of Palestinians for those of Israeli hostages. Also read | Key Muslim nations back Trump’s Gaza peace plan — but will Hamas accept the deal?
2. Phased Israeli withdrawal
Secondly, the Israel Defence Forces will pull back in stages as conditions are met. A full exit will follow once demilitarisation benchmarks are verified and a security mechanism is in place.
3. Trump the 'peacemaker'
A new “Board of Peace” will act as the transactional authority, and it will be headed by none other than Trump. It will also include other world leaders, including former UK prime minister Tony Blair. This body will oversee governance and direct aid flows until local Palestinian institutions are ready to take over.
4. Role of Hamas
Hamas will not govern Gaza. However, members who surrender arms and accept peaceful coexistence will be granted amnesty or safe passage out of the territory.
6. International Stabilisation Force
An international force, backed by Arab partners, will deploy to Gaza to train Palestinian police, secure borders, and prevent arms smuggling. Indonesia has already shown willingness to contribute troops.
7. Humanitarian surge
Aid will be scaled up immediately, with UN and Red Crescent agencies overseeing delivery. A pathway to Palestinian statehood
For the first time in years, the door to statehood is explicitly mentioned. Trump the ‘peacemaker’? 10 takeaways from his Gaza peace plan that has Netanyahu's backing

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said his government is working with US President Donald Trump’s administration on its 21-point plan to end the war in Gaza. Speaking to Fox News from New York, a day before his White House meeting with Trump, Netanyahu confirmed, “We’re working on it. All of that, I think, is part of the plan. I’m not going to preempt it, because we’re having these discussions exactly right now,” Netanyahu noted.
Where does the Palestinian Authority fit in?
Netanyahu made clear he does not see the Palestinian Authority (PA) as a credible option to govern Gaza after the war. Reiterating comments he made at the United Nations last week, he said: “I haven’t changed my positions, and I think that the credibility or the likelihood of the things, a reformed Palestinian Authority that changes completely its stripes… Some people will believe it happens. I don’t think it’s going to happen.”
What is in the US plan?
The Trump administration’s proposal includes several stages. Once hostages are released, Hamas fighters who accept peaceful coexistence would be offered amnesty. Those unwilling to stay in Gaza could leave under safe passage arrangements to third countries. The plan also points towards a potential pathway to Palestinian statehood, linked to Gaza’s redevelopment and a reformed Palestinian Authority.
What happens next?
Netanyahu is expected to discuss the details with Trump at the White House tomorrow. While Israel has shown interest in parts of the plan, its opposition to the PA’s return to Gaza remains a sticking point.

Israel’s PM Netanyahu confirmed talks with Trump’s team on the 21-point Gaza plan, prioritising hostage release, Hamas disarmament and Gaza demilitarisation. He rejected Palestinian Authority governance, while safe passage for Hamas leaders remains under discussion.

US President Donald Trump on Sunday suggested a major breakthrough could be on the horizon for the Middle East, as reports emerged of a 21-point peace plan for Gaza. “We have a real chance for GREATNESS IN THE MIDDLE EAST. The Gaza Health Ministry says more than 66,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes, while 90% of the population has been displaced. The war has also triggered international pressure on both Israel and the US to deliver a ceasefire and address the humanitarian crisis.
Hamas and Israel respond
While Trump insists “all of the countries within the region are involved” and that Hamas is aware of the discussions, the group has denied receiving any new proposals. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly rejected the idea of Palestinian statehood, a central part of the US framework.“Giving the Palestinians a state one mile from Jerusalem after October 7 is like giving al-Qaeda a state one mile from New York City after September 11,” Netanyahu said at the UN General Assembly. It’s insane, and we won’t do it,” Netanyahu added, warning Western nations that moves to recognise a Palestinian state would only embolden further violence. The proposal, said to be shaped by US special envoy Steve Witkoff, is still in its early stages and faces resistance, particularly from Israel.

‘I think we have a deal’: Trump hints at agreement to end Gaza war and get hostages back

A series of technical breakdowns at the United Nations left world leaders struggling to be heard as they addressed the General Assembly on Gaza and Palestinian statehood. Microphone failures interrupted speeches by Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto. UN staff later said the glitches were due to equipment faults in the General Assembly hall, stressing there was “no indication” of deliberate interference. Also read: Mass funeral in Pakistan after military bombs Khyber Pakhtunkhwa village killing 30
What happened to Indonesia’s president mid-speech?
On Tuesday, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto was outlining plans to send peacekeepers to Gaza when his microphone suddenly went silent. The interpreter was left unable to continue until the feed returned seconds later.
Erdogan’s warning on Gaza cut short
Hours earlier, Turkish President Erdogan was denouncing what he called Israel’s “genocide in Gaza” and urging immediate recognition of Palestine when his audio failed. Delegates briefly heard the interpreter say, “Cannot hear the President, his voice is gone.” The sound came back soon after, but not before confusion spread through the hall.
Canada’s Palestine recognition met with cheers, then silence
The most dramatic disruption came when Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney formally recognised the State of Palestine. Technical glitches at the UN cut off speeches by Erdogan, Carney and Prabowo on Gaza and Palestinian statehood. Despite interruptions, momentum for Palestine’s recognition grew, with over 150 nations backing it.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended last week’s strike on Hamas officials in Qatar, describing it as justified because of the Gulf state’s close ties with the militant group. “Qatar is connected to Hamas, it bolsters Hamas, it harbours Hamas, it funds Hamas… It has strong levers (that it could pull), but it chose not to,” Netanyahu told reporters at a press conference. “Therefore our action was entirely justified,” he added. The airstrike in Doha was the first time Israel had launched such an operation on Qatari soil, a country that is also a US ally.
What was the outcome of the strike?
The bombing killed six people, though none of them were the senior Hamas leaders that Israel said it was targeting, according to both Israeli sources and the militant group. The unprecedented move has heightened tensions in the region and added new pressure to already fragile ceasefire negotiations.
How did Qatar react?
Qatar responded by calling an emergency meeting of the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. Nearly 60 nations attended, condemning Israel and urging collective action. Qatar has no diplomatic relations with Israel but has long hosted Hamas leaders. It has also acted as a mediator in ceasefire talks and in negotiations for the release of Israeli hostages captured during Hamas' 7 October 2023 attack.
What is Qatar’s role in the conflict?
Between 2018 and 2023, Qatar provided millions of dollars each month in cash and aid to Gaza, funding that was approved at the time by Netanyahu’s cabinet. Despite this, Israeli media earlier this year reported that two of Netanyahu’s aides were investigated by Shin Bet for allegedly receiving payments from Qatar, a scandal dubbed “Qatargate”.Netanyahu, who testified in the inquiry in March, dismissed it as a “political witch hunt”. Reports also linked the dismissals of Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar and efforts to remove Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara to their involvement in the probe.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended his country’s airstrikes on Hamas leaders inside Qatar, likening Hamas’ October 7th assault on Israel to the September 11th terror attacks in the United States. They may be winning the war, but they’re not winning the world of public relations, you know, and it is hurting them,” Trump told the Daily Caller. Ex-US NSA Jake Sullivan weighs In Israel’s weakened influence in Washington Trump also said that Israel no longer has the same sway in Washington that it once enjoyed. “If you go back 15–20 years, Israel had the strongest lobby in Congress of anything or body, or of any company or corporation or state that I’ve ever seen. Israel was the strongest, and today it doesn’t have that strong a lobby. It’s amazing,” he said. He blamed the rise of progressive Democrats for this shift, saying, “There was a time where you couldn’t speak badly about Israel if you wanted to be a politician, you couldn’t. But today you have Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and all these lunatics, and they’ve really changed it. Israel once had complete control in Congress, and now it doesn’t. I’m a little surprised to see it.” Trump recalls October 7 attacks The president also stressed the importance of remembering Hamas’s October 7 assault. “People have forgotten October 7, it was a really horrible day. I saw the pictures. It was really bad. You have people that deny it ever happened. You have people that deny the Holocaust ever happened,” he said. White House weighs in on postwar Gaza plans Last week, the White House held internal discussions on what Gaza could look like after the fighting. A senior official said Trump convened a meeting with aides to review “all aspects of the Gaza issue, including increasing aid deliveries, the hostage crisis and plans for the day after the war.” Another official said Trump “made clear that he wants the war to end, and that he wants peace and prosperity for all the people of the region.” Trump also claimed, “Nobody has done more for Israel than I have, including the recent attacks with Iran, wiping that thing out.” While pressing Israel to end the war quickly, Trump has also backed its plan to seize Gaza City. In recent weeks, he said Jerusalem must “finish the job” against Hamas, adding that hostages will only be freed after the militant group is destroyed. The Israeli military has reportedly assessed that the Gaza City campaign could last four to five months, after which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has discussed operations in refugee camps in central Gaza. Despite this, US officials, including Trump and his special envoy Steve Witkoff, have repeatedly stressed their preference for a shorter timeline.

Donald Trump warned that Israel’s war in Gaza is damaging its global image and urged a swift end. He added that Israel’s political influence in Washington has significantly declined over time.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a press conference on Sunday (August 10) discussing his takeover plan for Gaza. 'Best way to end war': Netanyahu says he doesn't want to 'occupy Gaza' as Israel prepares short-timeline offensive

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has set out his vision for Gaza’s future as the country’s military presses deeper into the territory. Speaking ahead of an emergency UN Security Council meeting, Netanyahu vowed to “puncture the lies” and tell “the truth” about the ongoing conflict. He insisted that Hamas still has “thousands of armed terrorists” in Gaza whose sole aim is to “destroy” Israel. 'Demilitarisation, security zone, Hamas' surrender': Netanyahu reveals five-point plan for Gaza after the war

Israel is bracing for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s first international press conference since his security cabinet decided to expand the war in Gaza and capture Gaza City. The announcement, set for Sunday afternoon, comes as divisions within the country grow sharper. While some Israelis demand an end to the war and a deal to free the remaining hostages, others insist Hamas must be crushed entirely. Protests in Tel Aviv on Saturday saw thousands demanding the government prioritise hostage negotiations over further military action. Also read: 'Graveyard for Trump’s mercenaries': Iran vows to block US-brokered Azerbaijan-Armenia corridor near its border
Far right pushes for total victory over Hamas
Pressure on Netanyahu has intensified from his far-right coalition partners. Of the 251 people taken hostage during Hamas’s October 2023 attack, 49 remain in Gaza, including 27, the military says, are dead.
International criticism mounts ahead of UN meeting
The cabinet’s decision has drawn widespread condemnation from abroad, including from allies urging Israel to pursue a negotiated truce to free the hostages and ease Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. The UN Security Council is due to meet on Sunday to discuss the latest escalation. Humanitarian groups warn of famine taking hold in Gaza, where the health ministry says at least 61,430 Palestinians have been killed since the war began. Gaza’s civil defence agency reported at least 27 more deaths from Israeli fire on Sunday, including 11 near aid distribution centres.
Netanyahu unmoved by backlash
Despite criticism from both international partners and reported dissent within the Israeli military, Netanyahu has stood by the decision. “We are not going to occupy Gaza, we are going to free Gaza from Hamas,” he wrote on social media late Friday. The war began after Hamas’s 2023 attack on Israel, which killed 1,219 people, according to official figures. The conflict has since devastated Gaza, with the situation now reaching a critical juncture ahead of Netanyahu’s announcement.

Israel awaits Netanyahu’s first global press conference since expanding the Gaza war. As internal divisions deepen, protests grow, with some demanding a hostage deal and others calling for Hamas’s defeat.

Demonstrators in Tel Aviv held up photographs of those still held in Gaza, with relatives warning Netanyahu of the consequences of his plan. “If you invade parts of Gaza and the hostages are murdered, we will pursue you in the town squares, in election campaigns and at every time and place,” said Shahar Mor Zahiro, a relative of a slain hostage. Of the 251 people taken hostage during Hamas’s October 2023 attack, 49 remain in Gaza, including 27, the military says, are dead. International criticism mounts ahead of UN meeting The cabinet’s decision has drawn widespread condemnation from abroad, including from allies urging Israel to pursue a negotiated truce to free the hostages and ease Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. Netanyahu unmoved by backlash Despite criticism from both international partners and reported dissent within the Israeli military, Netanyahu has stood by the decision.

Far-right demands full takeover, families push for hostage deal: With Netanyahu's Gaza announcement hours away, here's all you need to know

Palestinian militant group Hamas said on Friday (August 8) that it was ready for a comprehensive deal with Israel to release all the hostages in Gaza. This came amid the chaos around Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to take over the Gaza Strip. In an official statement posted on its social media, Hamas said, “We have shown all flexibility through Egyptian and Qatari mediators to make the ceasefire a success. We are ready for a comprehensive deal to release all occupation prisoners in exchange for stopping the war and withdrawing its forces.” The militant group also said that the plan to occupy Gaza "is an adventure that will cost it a heavy price and will not be a picnic." "Our people and their resistance are resilient to being broken or surrendered, and Netanyahu's plans and illusions will fail," the group added.
Netanyahu's plan 'won't defeat Hamas or free hostages'
Meanwhile, the former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that expanding military action in Gaza will not defeat Hamas or free the hostages. "To assume that now we are going to reach out for what remained of Hamas and rescue the hostages is a fantasy. It will not happen," Olmert said during an interview with The Associated Press. Not only him, but Netanyahu's plan to fully occupy the Gaza Strip has drawn massive outrage from several countries as well, including Saudi Arabia and the UK.
What's in the plan?
As per a report by Channel 12, in the first phase of the plan, the Netanyahu government will issue an evacuation notice to 1 million residents of Gaza City - almost 50 per cent of the entire Palestinian population. This will, as per Netanyahu, give some time for his officials to establish civilian infrastructure like hospitals and camps in the Gaza Strip for evacuees. This process is said to last for several weeks. In the second phase of the plan, the Israeli military will launch an offensive in the region. At that time, US President Donald Trump would give a speech in which he would announce the acceleration of humanitarian aid in coordination with Israel, the Channel 12 report said. Meanwhile, the US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee told Bloomberg News on Wednesday (August 6) that there was an effort to add 12 aid sites to the already existing four, operated by the Israel- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. Huckabee said, "A quadrupling over two months, if possible. It’s all about funding." He added, “I think there’s still some question about areas of the north that may depend on whether the IDF can clear those areas and make it safe.” The US, along with other countries, would fund this expansion by donating around $1 billion to Israel. In addition, the plan also said that the civilian population of the strip is expected to be further pushed toward the southern Strip, while manoeuvres take place in areas where hostages are believed to be held, with efforts toward avoiding any harm to them.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told ministers he will seek cabinet approval for a plan to fully occupy the Gaza Strip, according to reports in Hebrew media. Several ministers said Netanyahu used the phrase “occupation of the Strip” in private discussions outlining his vision for an expanded military campaign, a significant change in tone as the government debates the next stage of the war.A senior official close to the prime minister was quoted by Ynet as saying: “The die is cast, we are going for a full occupation of the Gaza Strip.” They added, “There will be operations even in areas where hostages are being held. If the IDF chief of staff doesn’t agree, he should resign.”
IDF warns of risks and long timeline
The Israel Defense Forces currently control around 75% of Gaza. Under Netanyahu’s plan, the military would seize the remaining territory, placing the entire enclave under Israeli control. The army has cautioned against such a move, warning it could take years to dismantle Hamas infrastructure and might endanger hostages, who could be executed if troops approach their locations.
Cabinet divisions over next steps
Netanyahu has said he will convene the cabinet to set out orders for the IDF, with some expecting he could delay further offensives to allow hostage negotiations to progress. According to Channel 12, the security cabinet is split. Supporters of expanding operations reportedly include Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, and Military Secretary Maj. Gen. Roman Gofman and Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs. Those favouring continued efforts towards a ceasefire-hostage deal include IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen.
