As US President Donald Trump arrived back in Washington following his visit to golf resorts in Scotland, the White House shared a video of his recent remarks on social media when asked about starving children in Gaza. Earlier, during an informal press conference, Trump suggested that the blame for the situation in Gaza lies with Hamas, and not Israel, which has cut off humanitarian aid deliveries on allegations that Hamas has been looting the aid. Trump also said that the US will partner with Israel to run new food distribution centres in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that Israel will not surrender to Hamas’s demands in ongoing ceasefire talks, warning the group not to mistake Israel’s willingness to negotiate as weakness. “If Hamas understands our readiness to reach a deal as weakness, as an opportunity to dictate terms of surrender to us that will endanger Israel, it is greatly mistaken,” Netanyahu said at a state ceremony marking 85 years since the death of Zionist leader Ze’ev Jabotinsky. Deaths of civilians seeking aid have become a regular occurrence in Gaza, with the authorities blaming Israeli fire as crowds facing chronic shortages of food and other essentials flock in huge numbers to aid centres.

Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli forces opened fire on crowds of Palestinians trying to collect humanitarian aid in the war-torn Palestinian territory on Sunday, killing 73 people and wounding dozens more. At least 67 were killed as truckloads of aid arrived in the north, while six others were reported shot near an aid point close to Rafah in the south, where dozens of people lost their lives just 24 hours earlier. The UN World Food Programme said its 25-truck convoy carrying food aid "encountered massive crowds of hungry civilians which came under gunfire" near Gaza City, soon after it crossed from Israel and cleared checkpoints. Israel's military disputed the death toll and said soldiers had fired warning shots "to remove an immediate threat posed to them" as thousands gathered near Gaza City. Deaths of civilians seeking aid have become a regular occurrence in Gaza, with the authorities blaming Israeli fire as crowds facing chronic shortages of food and other essentials flock in huge numbers to aid centres. The UN said earlier this month that nearly 800 aid-seekers had been killed since late May, including on the routes of aid convoys. 'Sniper' fire In Gaza City, Qasem Abu Khater, 36, told AFP he had rushed to try to get a bag of flour but instead found a desperate crowd of thousands and "deadly overcrowding and pushing". "The tanks were firing shells randomly at us and Israeli sniper soldiers were shooting as if they were hunting animals in a forest," he added. "Dozens of people were martyred right before my eyes and no one could save anyone." Civil defence agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP the death toll was 67 and expected to rise while the WFP condemned violence against civilians seeking aid as "completely unacceptable". "Israeli forces' gunfire" was responsible for the deaths in the south, he added. Media restrictions in Gaza and difficulties accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify tolls and details provided by the agency and other parties. The army has maintained that it works to avoid harm to civilians, saying this month that it issued new instructions to its troops on the ground "following lessons learned" from a spate of similar incidents. Papal call The war was sparked by Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, leading to the deaths of 1,219 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. Israel's retaliatory campaign has killed 58,895 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday expressed his regret to Pope Leo XIV after what he described as a "stray" munition killed three people sheltering at the Holy Family Church in Gaza City. At the end of the Angelus prayer on Sunday, the pope slammed the "barbarity" of the Gaza war and called for peace, days after the Israeli strike on the territory's only Catholic church. The strike was part of the "ongoing military attacks against the civilian population and places of worship in Gaza", he added. "I appeal to the international community to observe humanitarian law and respect the obligation to protect civilians, as well as the prohibition of collective punishment, the indiscriminate use of force, and the forced displacement of populations." The Catholic Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Pierbattista Pizzaballa, held mass at the Gaza church on Sunday after travelling to the devastated territory in a rare visit on Friday. 'Expanding' operations Most of Gaza's population of more than two million people have been displaced at least once during the war and there have been repeated evacuation calls across large parts of the coastal enclave. On Sunday morning, the Israeli military told residents and displaced Palestinians sheltering in the Deir el-Balah area to move south immediately. Israel was "expanding its activities" against Hamas around Deir el-Balah, "where it has not operated before", the military's Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee said on X. The announcement prompted concern from families of hostages held since October 7, 2023 that the Israeli offensive could harm their loved ones. Delegations from Israel and militant group Hamas have spent the last two weeks in indirect talks on a proposed 60-day ceasefire in Gaza and the release of 10 living hostages. Of the 251 hostages taken during Hamas's 2023 attack, 49 are still being held in Gaza, including 27 the Israeli military says are dead. US President Donald Trump on Sunday (Jul 13) said that negotiations over a Gaza ceasefire were ongoing and expressed hope for progress "over the next week". His statement comes even as Israeli airstrikes the same day killed more than 40 Palestinians, including children in Gaza, and as Qatari-mediated talks remained deadlocked. "Gaza – we are talking, and hopefully we're going to get that straightened out over the next week," Trump told reporters, echoing optimism he had previously voiced on July 4. But on the ground, there seem to be little to no signs of a breakthrough.
Israeli strikes kill children collecting water
As per Gaza's civil defence agency, 43 Palestinians were killed on Sunday alone, including 11 people at a market in Gaza City and eight children at a water distribution point in the Nuseirat refugee camp. It also released drone footage showing airstrikes and rising plumes of smoke. Israel's intensifying campaign comes amid growing scrutiny of civilian casualties and escalating humanitarian concerns. Trump says he'll get Gaza 'STRAIGHTENED OUT' in a week, even as Israeli strikes kill 8 children collecting water

At least ten Palestinians were killed Friday (Jul 11) while waiting for food rations near Rafah in southern Gaza, according to Gaza's civil defence agency. This, as per the UN, brings the total number of aid-related deaths to nearly 800 in just six weeks. The incident comes amid ongoing ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Qatar, as the war in Gaza enters its 22nd month. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday (Jul 10) expressed cautious optimism about a possible 60-day truce deal, saying he hoped it could be finalised in a few days. He said that once that is done, he would be ready to negotiate a more permanent end to the hostilities.
Aid distribution turns deadly
The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said Friday that 798 Palestinians had been killed while attempting to access humanitarian aid between late May and July 7. Of those, 615 were killed "in the vicinity of the GHF [Gaza Humanitarian Foundation] sites," the UN said, referring to the controversial new US- and Israeli-backed aid group that has effectively replaced the UN's aid delivery role in Gaza."Where people are lining up for essential supplies such as food and medicine, and where... they have a choice between being shot or being fed, this is unacceptable," said UN rights office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani in Geneva. The UN, as per AFP, refuses to cooperate with GHF over concerns that the organisation as designed to cater to Israeli military objectives.
What did Israel say about the alarming figures?
Israel's military said it was investigating the latest incident and had previously issued new instructions to troops after reports of civilian deaths near aid distribution points. It added that it works to minimise "possible friction" between aid seekers and soldiers and that it conducted "thorough examinations" of incidents in which "harm to civilians who arrived at distribution facilities was reported".The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, however, dismissed the UN report as "false and misleading", claiming that "most deadly attacks on aid sites have been linked to UN convoys".

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said Friday that 798 Palestinians had been killed while attempting to access humanitarian aid between late May and July 7.

Aid line or death line? In just 6 weeks, 800 killed while collecting aid in Gaza, reveals UN's shocking report

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday (Jul 7) said that he had nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, presenting the Republican leader with a letter he sent to the Nobel Peace Prize committee. The show of diplomatic camaraderie comes as Trump hosted a White House dinner where he pressed Netanyahu to end the war in Gaza, now approaching its second year. This was Netanyahu’s third visit to Washington since Trump returned to office and came as indirect ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas continued in Qatar.
Netanyahu nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize
"He's forging peace as we speak, in one country, in one region after the other," said Netanyahu at the dinner with Trump at the White House. Trump is known for complaining about perceived bias and how he gets overlooked by the Norwegian Nobel Committee despite his many Nobel Peace Prize nominations. The leader has claimed credit for mediating the conflict between India and Pakistan – a claim rejected by New Delhi, Serbia, and Kosovo. He has also demanded credit for "keeping peace" between Egypt and Ethiopia and brokering the Abraham Accords.
What happened at the White House dinner?
As per AFP, the two leaders sat across a long formal table, trading pleasantries in front of reporters as Trump insisted progress was being made. "I don't think there is a hold up. I think things are going along very well," Trump said when asked what was preventing a breakthrough. He also expressed confidence that Hamas was ready to negotiate an end to the conflict. "They want to meet and they want to have that ceasefire," Trump said when asked if clashes with Israeli troops might derail peace talks.Even as Trump continues to push for an end to the bloodshed, Netanyahu's remarks showed little room for concessions. The Israeli PM ruled out any arrangement that would lead to full Palestinian statehood. "Now, people will say it's not a complete state; it's not a state. We don't care," he said.
Qatar talks continue
The meeting in Washington coincided with a second day of indirect ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Qatar. Representatives from both sides were reportedly in separate rooms in the same building, according to sources familiar with the talks.Despite the diplomatic overtures, negotiations in Doha ended Monday with "no breakthrough", a Palestinian official told AFP. Talks are expected to resume later this week.Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is scheduled to join the discussions in Qatar in the coming days in a bid to move things forward. The US proposal on the table includes a 60-day ceasefire, the release of 10 Israeli hostages and several bodies by Hamas. In turn, Israel would have to free Palestinian detainees from its prisons. Hamas has also sought security guarantees, a withdrawal timeline for Israeli troops, and the reinstatement of UN-led aid operations inside Gaza. Meanwhile, Trump’s spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, emphasised that "The utmost priority for the president right now in the Middle East is to end the war in Gaza and to return all of the hostages." She said Trump wants Hamas to accept the current US-backed proposal immediately, especially after Israel signalled its support for the plan.

Top 10 world news: Zelensky, Trump discuss Russian strikes; Hamas decision on peace proposal likely in 24 hrs, and more

US President Donald Trump said Tuesday (Jul 1) that Israel has agreed to the terms of a proposed 60-day ceasefire in Gaza and urged Hamas to accept what he called the "final" deal on the table. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said his representatives held a "long and productive meeting" with Israeli officials earlier in the day, paving the way for a temporary halt to the fighting that has ravaged the Palestinian territory for nearly nine months. He urged the militant group Hamas to also accept the "final proposal" while issuing an ominous warning "IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE".
What did Trump say exactly?
On Truth Social, Trump, in his usual style, wrote, "My Representatives had a long and productive meeting with the Israelis today on Gaza. Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalise the 60 Day CEASEFIRE, during which time we will work with all parties to end the War."He then told Hamas that "The Qataris and Egyptians, who have worked very hard to help bring Peace, will deliver this final proposal." He added that he hopes “for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas takes this Deal, because it will not get better — IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE.”

Neither the Israeli government nor Hamas immediately responded to the announcement, and there was no official confirmation from the Israeli Embassy in Washington.
Trump to be ‘Very firm’ with Netanyahu
This comes just ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington. He is expected to visit the White House next Monday. Earlier on Tuesday, speaking to reporters earlier in the day, Trump said he planned to be "very firm" with Netanyahu during their upcoming meeting on July 7. Trump, who has previously claimed credit for brokering high-profile international agreements, seems to be pursuing a Gaza ceasefire as a potential diplomatic win. Previously, he has taken credit for brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Iran after a 12-day war broke out last month. That conflict, which included a US-led bombing campaign targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, ended in a fragile truce on June 24.

Trump says Israel has agreed to 60-day Gaza ceasefire, urges Hamas to accept final deal, warns 'IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday (Jun 29) said that the recent 12-day conflict with Iran had paved the way for new "opportunities"—chief among them, the potential return of Israeli hostages still held in Gaza. "Many opportunities have opened up now following this victory," Netanyahu said during an address to security service officials, adding, “first of all, to rescue the hostages”. Netanyahu's statement, as per reports, has given rise to speculation that progress could be achieved in bringing about an end to the Gaza conflict and securing the hostages' release.
What did Netanyahu say about hostages?
On his Sunday visit to the security facility of Israel's Shin Bet Intelligence service, the Israeli PM said, "I want to inform you that as you probably know, many opportunities have opened up now following this victory, many opportunities.""First of all, to rescue the hostages. "Many opportunities have opened up now following this victory," Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said during an address to security service officials, adding, “first of all, to rescue the hostages”.

On his Sunday visit to the security facility of Israel's Shin Bet Intelligence service, the Israeli PM said, "I want to inform you that as you probably know, many opportunities have opened up now following this victory, many opportunities." "First of all, to rescue the hostages. Of course, we will also have to solve the Gaza issue, to defeat Hamas, but I estimate that we will achieve both tasks," he added, as per a statement issued by his office. A devout patriot, master tactician or a relentless power broker? All about Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s most powerful man

Benjamin Netanyahu, an elite soldier-turned prime minister of Israel, has been described as a war monger, maverick politician known for brinkmanship, or a strong leader of the Jewish nation, depending on where you look. But one thing is clear: Netanyahu is possibly among the most consequential leaders of Israel. As the Israel-Iran war rages on, here is a look at the life, military career and political controversies of Bibi, the man of the moment.
Benjamin Netanyahu: Early life details
Benjamin Netanyahu was born on 21 October 1949 in Tel Aviv, Israel. He spent parts of his youth in the US, where his father taught at a college. In 1956-1958 and from 1963 to 1967, his family lived in Cheltenham Township of Pennsylvania. Netanyahu studied at the Cheltenham High School and Cornell University. The nation’s longest-serving prime minister, Netanyahu served in 1996–1999, 2009–2021, and since 2022 in the top post.
Netanyahu's military career: Elite soldier on risky missions
Netanyahu’s military service began in 1967 when he returned from the US at the age of 18. He joined the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) that year, and served in the elite Sayeret Matkal special forces unit. He was part of several risky operations of Israeli forces, such as the 1972 rescue of a hijacked Sabena plane. He was injured in the shoulder during that operation. Netanyahu fought in the 1973 Yom Kippur War, and was promoted to captain. He was also part of several IDF missions across Lebanon and Jordan in 1968. He lost his brother Yonatan, who led the 1976 Entebbe counterterrorism raid, a life event that shaped his hardline stance against terrorism. He later went on to found the Jonathan Institute to combat global terrorism. His military experience led to the ‘Mr Security’ image of Netanyahu, which gave him political legitimacy.
Netanyahu's political career: Right-wing leader known for brinkmanship
Netanyahu joined the right-wing Likud party and rose through the ranks, often through sheer brinkmanship. Benjamin Netanyahu: Early life details Benjamin Netanyahu was born on 21 October 1949 in Tel Aviv, Israel. Netanyahu's military career: Elite soldier on risky missions Netanyahu’s military service began in 1967 when he returned from the US at the age of 18. Netanyahu's political career: Right-wing leader known for brinkmanship Netanyahu joined the right-wing Likud party and rose through the ranks, often through sheer brinkmanship. He negotiated crises at home and abroad, including court cases alleging corruption, the hearings of which continued even as he was in and out of power. Through deft handling of coalitions, Netanyahu focused on staying in power despite not having a clear majority in recent elections, by aligning with far-right parties and leaders. He shrugged off massive protests seeking his arrest in corruption cases. Iran and Palestinians: Arch rivals of Netanyahu Having been a frontline soldier, Netanyahu was openly opposed to the Oslo Accords of the 1990s, which established a framework for the two-state solution that aimed to eventually create a Palestinian state alongside Israel. Instead of a solution, Netanyahu was interested in ‘managing’ the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and is often accused of supporting one Palestinian group against the other and stalling the peace process in spite of several direct talks with the other side's leaders. A contentious legacy shaped by controversy Netanyahu is keen on political survival and is known for his resiliency. The polarising leader's military background, political manoeuvring, and wartime decision-making appear to put his own security and survival upfront, despite the lack of diplomatic consensus or domestic unity. His ability to do the strategic tight rope walk is informed by his military experience and personal involvement in Israel’s conflicts in the region. Whether you like him or not, his legacy would be that of a leader who reshaped the global perspective on Israel as a regional power.

‘Selfie yacht’ Israel also took a dig at the Gaza aid ship by calling it a “selfie yacht” and claiming that it was just for publicity and a “media gimmick.” “The 'selfie yacht' of the 'celebrities' is safely making its way to the shores of Israel. The passengers are expected to return to their home countries,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry wrote on X. “While Greta and others attempted to stage a media provocation whose sole purpose was to gain publicity — and which included less than a single truckload of aid,” Israel alleged. “There are ways to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip — they do not involve Instagram selfies. The tiny amount of aid that was on the yacht and not consumed by the “celebrities” will be transferred to Gaza through real humanitarian channels,” the ministry declared.

What happened? This all happened after a report by the Daily Mail that several Israeli ships had surrounded Greta’s ship, and some of the Israeli troops had entered Greta’s ship. In a video that surfaced online, climate activist Greta Thunberg claimed that she and other people - onboard the Mladen ship carrying aid for Gaza have been kidnapped by the Israeli forces. “My name is Greta Thunberg, and I am from Sweden,” Greta said in the video. “If you see this video, we are being intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupational forces, or forces that support Israel. I urge all my friends, family, and comrades to put pressure on the Swedish government to release me and the others as soon as possible,” she added in the clip, asking for help.
