Judith and Natalie Raanan were taken hostage from Kibbutz Nahal Oz during Hamas's October 7 invasion of southern Israel that claimed the lives of 1,400 people.

The mother-daughter duo lived in Chicago and were visiting Israel to celebrate a relative's birthday.

On Friday, (Oct 20), Biden said that he was "overjoyed" at the release of the hostages and thanked Qatar and the government of Israel "for their partnership in this work".

"Today, we have secured the release of two Americans taken hostage by Hamas during the horrific terrorist assault against Israel on October 7," Biden said in a statement.

"Our fellow citizens have endured a terrible ordeal these past 14 days, and I am overjoyed that they will soon be reunited with their family, who has been wracked with fear."&nbsp;

The United States president then pledged support to the families of the hostages saying that the work would continue to win the release of other Americans being held by Hamas since the attack.

"We will not stop until we get their loved ones home. As president, I have no higher priority than the safety of Americans held hostage around the world," Biden said.

"These individuals and their families will have the full support of the United States government as they recover and heal, and we should all respect their privacy in this moment," he added.

<h2>Mediation will lead to hostage releases 'very soon'</h2>

A Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman told German Welt am Sonntag newspaper that the ongoing discussions will lead to the release of hostages held captive by Hamas "very soon, especially civilians".

"I can't promise you this will happen today or tomorrow or after tomorrow. But we are taking a path that will very soon lead to the release of the hostages, especially civilians," Majed Al-Ansari said.&nbsp;

"We are currently working on an agreement under which all civilian hostages will be initially released," he added.&nbsp;

He further said that the release of the two American nationals "proved to us and our partners that the efforts made in the past days are feasible and must continue".&nbsp;

US President Joe Biden dials American hostages released by Hamas

US President Joe Biden on Friday (October 20) said that it was possible that Hamas initiated the ongoing conflict with Israel as it wanted to disrupt warming up of ties between Saudi Arabia and Israel.

"One of the reasons why they acted like they did... why Hamas moved on Israel... (was) because they knew I was about to sit down with the Saudis," Biden told guests at a campaign fundraiser.

"The Saudis wanted to recognize Israel... unite the Middle East," he said.

The positive momentum towards normalisation of ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia, guardian of Islam's two holiest sites, was destroyed as Hamas terrorists&nbsp;attacked Israel on October 7.

Hamas fighters stormed into Israel from the Gaza Strip. They took more than 200 hostages and killed at least 1400 people, as per data with Israeli officials.

In the conflict this attack sparked, Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas. It has said that about 1500 of the group's fighters have been killed.

Earlier, Thunberg was charged by the UK's Metropolitan Police Service after she was detained at a protest outside an annual gathering of energy industry figures in London.

She was among the 26 people charged by the UK police after being held at the demonstration site on Tuesday. She was charged with "failing to comply with a condition" levied under Britain's Public Order Act that deals with public assemblies and was released on bail.

She is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Nov 15.

Before her arrest, Thunberg denounced "closed-door" agreements struck between politicians and representatives of the oil and gas industry.

London police said they imposed "conditions to prevent disruption to the public" after officers arrived at the protest, which were then breached and further prompted the arrests.

"The protesters were asked to move from the road onto the pavement, which would enable them to continue with their demonstration without breaching the conditions," a police statement said.

Israel takes dig at Greta Thunberg over her post showing support for Palestinians

A convoy of 20 trucks, carrying humanitarian aid, entered the Gaza Strip from Egypt through the Rafah crossing on Saturday (Oct 21), confirmed the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas in a statement.

It stated that the trucks were filled with medicine and food supplies meant for the people of Gaza Strip. "The relief aid convoy that is supposed to enter [Gaza] today includes 20 trucks that carry medicine, medical supplies, and a limited amount of food supplies (canned goods)," said Hamas's media office, in a statement.

The Egyptian state TV, trucks which were seen waiting for days to enter the area of border crossing from the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt entering the gate after the war between Israel and Hamas entered the 15th day.

<h2>Rafah crossing – the only route to Gaza not controlled by Israel</h2>

Gaza Strip has been incessantly bombed by Israel since the massive attack was launched by Hamas on Tel Aviv on October 7.

The terrorist group had entered Israel from the Gaza Strip and killed around 1,400 people, who were mostly civilians on the first day of the attack, according to Israeli officials. The people were killed, mutilated and burnt to death and 200 others were taken hostage.

After the attack, Israel announced a total siege on Gaza, and stopped the supplies of electricity, water, food and fuel, which created chronic shortages in the region.

Rafah is the only route inside Gaza which is not under the control of Israel and through which it was agreed to allow entry of aid from Egypt after a request was made by its top ally the United States.

As per an AFP correspondent, 20 trucks sent by the Egyptian Red Crescent, which had been given the task of delivering aid from different UN agencies, entered through the Egyptian terminal. On the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, 36 empty trailers were seen entering the terminal and moving towards the Egyptian side, where they were to be filled with incoming aid, reported AFP.

Two Red Cross vehicles, two UN vehicles and four ambulances were also seen moving towards the terminal.

<h2>Gaza's first aid convoy 'must not be the last': UN</h2>

Reacting to the entry of 20 aid trucks entering Gaza through Rafah crossing, UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths said that the first truck "must not be the last".

"I am confident that this delivery will be the start of a sustainable effort to provide essential supplies... to the people of Gaza," stated Martin Griffiths, adding, "This first convoy must not be the last.”

Rafah is the only route inside Gaza which is not under the control of Israel and through which it was agreed to allow entry of aid from Egypt after a request was made by its top ally the United States. As per an AFP correspondent, 20 trucks sent by the Egyptian Red Crescent, which had been given the task of delivering aid from different UN agencies, entered through the Egyptian terminal. On the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, 36 empty trailers were seen entering the terminal and moving towards the Egyptian side, where they were to be filled with incoming aid, reported AFP. The statement was released as Israel continues bombardment in Gaza and aid remains blocked on the Rafah border with Egypt. Israel started pounding Gaza after Hamas militants attacked the country on October 7, killing at least 1,400 people and taking 203 others hostage. 
 
Israel has now been planning to launch a ground offensive. Minister Gallant, while speaking to a parliamentary committee on Friday (Oct 20), said that the campaign's first stage aimed at destroying the infrastructure of Hamas, as per a statement from his office.

Israel suggests severing ties with Gaza after war with Hamas ends

Foes for centuries, Russia and its "dear friend" China have begun to find common ground with the Middle East countries that have voiced support for Palestine amid the Israel-Hamas war.

The counter-offensive by Israel has presented&nbsp;an opportunity for both Moscow and Beijing to come up as the champs of the developing world as Washington has fairly and squarely backed its ally Tel Aviv.

Though China has repeatedly called for restraint and a ceasefire, it has also strongly denounced Israel over its bombardment of the besieged Palestinian enclave.

"Israel's actions have gone beyond the scope of self-defence," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said earlier this week, calling on it to stop its "collective punishment" of Gaza residents, Chinese state media reported.

Russia, amid the conflict, has expressed sympathy for the Palestinians while condemning the United States, stating that the upsurge of violence and tensions between Israel and Hamas showed the failure of the United States' Middle-East policy.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also stated that Washington sought to monopolise the international efforts aimed at forging peace in the region, further condemning the US for not seeking compromises acceptable to both sides.

"I think that many people will agree with me that this is a vivid example of the failure of United States policy in the Middle East," Putin had told Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani last week.

"The US tried to monopolise the solution (of the crisis between Israel and Palestinians), but, unfortunately, was not concerned with finding compromises acceptable to both sides, but, on the contrary, promoted its own ideas about how it should be done and put both sides under pressure. That's both sides, at one or another," he said.

Both Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping have strived to strengthen links to the global south, witnessing economic prospects and conceivably a way to negate the diplomatic influence of the United States and its allies. This strategy was on its full display earlier this week as China hosted a summit for Xi's Belt and Road Initiative, which has loaned hundreds of billions of dollars for infrastructure projects across the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia.

Putin attended and met Xi for three hours of talks that included "an in-depth exchange of views on the Palestinian-Israeli situation", China said.

"China and Russia still see (the crisis) more in terms of the United States than in terms of either Palestine or Israel," said Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

"If the United States can effectively rally the world, it's bad for them. If the US and its allies grow increasingly isolated, they see that as good for them."

<h2>China and Russia's support for Palestine</h2>

The way both Moscow and Beijing operate in the Middle East has a lot in common. Russia has been a staunch critic of the United States, however, China has mainly opted to bypass denouncing the US.

This year, China signalled its growing influence in the Middle East when it announced a deal on the restoration of ties between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

On the other hand, Russia too has been enhancing its relationship with Iran via its move to back Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and supplies of Iranian drones.

Both Moscow and Beijing have strongly voiced support for Palestinians and are critical of what they say is the stigmatisation of them by the United States.&nbsp;

"There's clearly a shared interest in emphasising the negative role of the US in the conflict," news agency Reuters quoted Jean-Loup Samaan, senior research fellow at the Middle East Institute of the National University of Singapore, as saying.

"And that fits within their broader narrative on the need to build an alternative world order to the US."

Earlier, Putin, accusing the West of not taking into consideration the fundamental interests of Palestinians, had stated that it was necessary to "implement the decisions of the UN Security Council on the creation of an independent sovereign Palestinian state."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also echoed the same sentiment saying that the creation of a Palestinian state was the "most reliable" solution for peace in Israel.&nbsp;

"Creation of a Palestinian state that would live side by side with Israel.. is the most reliable path to solve (the conflict). We cannot agree with those who say that security can only be ensured through a fight with terrorism," he said.

Meanwhile, Chinese media covered the Hamas assault and since then has been carrying reports containing images of Palestinians suffering, with some even citing Palestinian sources as saying Israel was responsible for the violence.

"None of the reality that shocked much of the world on October 7 is in Chinese news. Instead, the news features Israeli bombing of Gaza without explaining that the target is only Hamas infrastructure," Reuters quoted Carice Witte, director of the SIGNAL Group, a Sino-Israel relations think tank based in Tel Aviv as saying.

Explained | How Russia and China found common cause in conflict between Israel, Hamas

Palestinian militant group Hamas, on Friday (Oct 20), released a statement saying that it had released two American hostages out of the 200 captives it kidnapped following an unprecedented attack against Israel.

"In response to Qatari efforts, (Ezzedine) al-Qassam Brigades released two American citizens (a mother and her daughter) for humanitarian reasons," Hamas said in a statement posted on Telegram.

The militant group did not share details on how and when the hostages were released.

Earlier on Friday, the Israeli military said that most of the hostages abducted to Gaza were still alive.

"The majority of the hostages are alive. There were also dead bodies that were taken... to the Gaza Strip," an army statement said.

The army said that more than 20 hostages were minors, while between 10 and 20 were over the age of 60.

The Israeli military has carried out air raids on thousands of Hamas targets in Gaza, said the spokesman.

"They include quality targets such as drone facilities, they include naval facilities, they include command and control facilities, they include all of the rocket facilities," Lerner said.

Israel's Ambassador to India, Naor Gilon, while speaking to Indian Express, stated that Israel would welcome any help from India for the release of over 200 Israeli hostages, including several foreign nationals.&nbsp;

He further said that Israel was "moved that the first reaction from Prime Minister Narendra Modi came on the same afternoon, even before the full picture was out".

Gilon added that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi again "expressed solidarity" after speaking to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a few days later. He said, "Not just the Indian PM, we have got a show of support from all levels here — officials, ministers, civil society, and even people on social media."&nbsp;

Hamas releases two American hostages from Gaza

At least 81 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli troops or settlers in the occupied West Bank since the beginning of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, said the Palestinian health officials in Ramallah, on Friday (Oct 20).&nbsp;

The death toll following an arrest raid in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/israel-hamas-war-at-least-7-palestinians-killed-across-west-bank-10-israeli-officers-injured-amid-clashes-648878">Nur Shams refugee camp</a> near the city of Tulkarem by Israeli troops, on Thursday also rose to 13, said the Palestinian officials in the West Bank.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Israeli authorities said that one border officer was killed and nine others were injured after intense clashes during the raid.&nbsp;

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that’s troops have arrested over 580 wanted Palestinians across the Palestinian territory.

<h2>Death toll rises to 13</h2>

According to the Palestinian health ministry, over 13 people, including five children were killed after Israeli troops stormed Nur Shams camp. The Palestinian Authority said that Israel carried out a rare drone strike which killed at least 12 Palestinians.&nbsp;

The IDF said that it carried out an air strike which killed “a number of terrorists” in Nur Shams. It added, “Exchanges of fire with armed gunmen, which included explosive devices being thrown at Israeli security forces, took place.”&nbsp;

The Palestinian media outlets also reported gunmen shooting at the Israeli forces and setting off explosive devices in the area.&nbsp;

The Palestinian health ministry said Israeli forces shot dead a 17-year-old in Dheisheh refugee camp and a 32-year-old in Budrus, west of Ramallah, during clashes earlier Thursday.&nbsp;

According to the Israeli military, people hurled “molotov cocktails and other objects” like burning tires which prompted its troops to open fire.&nbsp;

This comes amid unrest and protests across the West Bank since October 7 when Hamas attacked Israel and the latter has since retaliated with constant bombardment of Gaza. Palestinians across the West Bank have held rallies in solidarity with Gaza’s 2.4 million people.

<h2>More than 580 Palestinians arrested: IDF</h2>

The clashes also led to the death of one Israeli border police personnel who was identified by the police as Master sergeant Maxim Razinkov. He was said to be fatally wounded by an improvised explosive device hurled at the Border Police forces. At least nine other officers were lightly wounded, said the Israeli police.&nbsp;

The IDF said that they have arrested 584 wanted Palestinians across the West Bank, including over 375 who are said to be associated with Hamas. Around 47 alleged Hamas members were arrested overnight, said the Israeli military on Friday.

The IDF also arrested an 18-year-old Palestinian from Ramallah claiming that he had been staying in Israel illegally and was suspected of having stolen the vehicle with the intention of carrying out a ramming attack against Israeli forces at the West Bank’s Hizma checkpoint near Jerusalem.&nbsp;

The United States President Joe Biden, on Friday (Oct 20), requested Congress for a whopping $105 billion security package including funds for Ukraine and Israel.

As per news agency AFP reports, Biden asked $61 billion in military aid for Ukraine and $14 billion for Israel.

"The world is watching and the American people rightly expect their leaders to come together and deliver on these priorities," White House Office of Management and Budget director Shalanda Young said in a letter to Congress.

"I urge Congress to address them as part of a comprehensive, bipartisan agreement in the weeks ahead."

Biden's request comes days after he visited Tel Aviv and vowed solidarity after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack against Israel and took the country and the world by surprise.

A day before, the US president also directly linked the Hamas attack on Israel and Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

While delivering his speech at the Oval Office, he argued that a total of $105.85 billion, including $61 billion in military aid for Ukraine and $14 billion for Israel, would secure US interests for generations to come.

Biden's massive security package also includes $7 billion for resisting China and bolstering allies in the Asia-Pacific region, and over $9 billion for humanitarian assistance for Gaza, Ukraine and Israel.

However, the huge funding ask is an attempt to strengthen weakening aid for Ukraine by connecting it with funding for Israel, which has bipartisan support.

There is significant backing in Congress for Ukraine, including among major Republicans in the Senate, where the Democrats hold the majority.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer promised quick action in the upper house.

"Senate Democrats will move expeditiously on this request, and we hope that our Republican colleagues across the aisle will join us to pass this much-needed funding," he said in a statement.

"This legislation is too important to wait for the House to settle their chaos."

Guterres flew to Egypt to oversee preparations for the delivery of aid.

"These trucks are not just trucks - they are a lifeline, they are the difference between life and death to many people in Gaza," he said, speaking on the Egyptian side of the crossing.

"To see them stuck here makes me very clear - what we need is to make them move, to make them move to the other side of this wall to make them move as quickly as possible and as many as possible," he added.

He said it must be "a sustained effort" with not just one convoy crossing but for many "to be authorised in a meaningful number to have enough trucks to provide support to Gaza's people".

Guterres also called for a swift system of verification of the aid shipments.

The European Union, on Friday (Oct 20), said that two flights carrying 54 tonnes of aid for Gaza had landed in Egypt and were ready for delivery to Gaza once access was possible.

The aid included water, food, shelter and sanitary materials and would be distributed by the Egyptian Red Cross, an EU Commission spokesperson told a news briefing.

"Overall, we are talking about 54 tonnes of humanitarian supplies. This includes water, This includes food, shelter, hygiene items and sanitary materials. Now in terms of these 54 tonnes, we are going to work through the Egyptian Red Cross," said the EU Commission spokesperson.

On Thursday (Oct 19), truckloads of aid carrying food and medical supplies designated for Gaza remained on the Egyptian side of the border after United States President Joe Biden struck a deal with Israel to allow relief into the war-torn region.

Biden, during his visit to Tel Aviv on Wednesday (Oct 19), said that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi had agreed to "let up to 20 trucks through, to begin with," to the heavily bombarded Gaza Strip, starting Friday, giving authorities time to repair roads.

UN Chief Guterres visits Rafah border crossing, pushes for aid to move into Gaza

The European Union, on Thursday (Oct 19), announced probes into tech giants Meta and TikTok, seeking more details on measures they have taken to halt the dissemination of "illegal content and disinformation" following Hamas' unprecedented attack on Israel.

The European Commission said it had sent formal requests for information to Meta and TikTok respectively.

Earlier, the EU had launched a similar probe into Elon Musk's social media platform X.

The commission said that the request to Meta was related "to the dissemination and amplification of illegal content and disinformation" around the Hamas-Israel conflict.

It released a separate statement saying that it wanted to know the measures taken by short-form video hosting service TikTok against "the spreading of terrorist and violent content and hate speech".

The EU's executive arm added that it wanted more information from Meta on its "mitigation measures to protect the integrity of elections".&nbsp;

Both Meta and TikTok have until October 25 to answer, with a deadline of Nov 8 for less critical factors of the ultimatum for information.

The commission further said that it also sought more details about how TikTok was conceding with rules on safeguarding minors online. Meta pressed that it was handling the issues inflated.

"Our teams are working around the clock to keep our platforms safe, take action on content that violates our policies or local law, and coordinate with third-party fact-checkers in the region to limit the spread of misinformation," a Meta spokesman said.

He added that Meta would be happy to provide further information to the commission.

TikTok said that it was reviewing Brussels' request and would publish a report next week with "more information about our ongoing work to keep our European community safe".

The ByteDance-owned company also said that it has removed 500,000 videos and closed 8,000 live streams in the region.

TikTok insisted that "it stands against terrorism," and that the company remains "focused on supporting free expression, upholding our commitment to human rights, and protecting our platform during the Israel-Hamas war".

"We are shocked and appalled by the horrific acts of terror in Israel last week."

"We are also deeply saddened by the intensifying humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. Our hearts break for everyone who has been affected," added the popular video app.

This came after the rally in Washington drew thousands of people inside and outside the Capitol building on the day that President Joe Biden was in the midst of a visit to the war-torn nation.&nbsp;

The war is nearing the two-week mark and has led to significant civilian casualties in both Israel and Gaza. More than 1,400 Israelis have been killed since Hamas’ attack on October 7 and thousands of others have been wounded.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, according to the Palestinian health ministry, the death toll in Gaza stood at 3,785 as of Thursday (Oct 19), with around 12,493 people injured.&nbsp;

<h2>'Ceasefire now'</h2>

The rally which was organised by two progressive Jewish groups – Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and IfNotNow – according to organisers drew a total of 10,000 people inside and outside the Capitol and called for a ceasefire in Gaza.&nbsp;

However, a group of around 400 people entered the rotunda of the Cannon House office building on Wednesday (Oct 18) afternoon inside Capitol Hill. The group was reportedly led by about 25 rabbis reading testimonials from Palestinians in Gaza and reciting prayers.&nbsp;

The demonstrators dressed in black T-shirts carried banners and placards which read “Jews say cease-fire now” and “Not in our name” while activists sat clapping and singing on the floor.&nbsp;

“We shut down congress to draw mass attention to the U.S. complicity in Israel’s ongoing oppression of Palestinians,” said the Jewish Voice for Peace in a statement on X.

It added, “Just as we demand an end to genocide in Gaza, we must put the same effort into dismantling the systems of Zionism, apartheid, and colonialism that brought us to this moment.”

Subsequently, the Capitol police began detaining the protesters as demonstrations are not permitted in congressional buildings.&nbsp;

According to American media reports citing the organisers, about 300 people have been arrested so far. The Capitol police in a statement on X said three were charged with assault on a police officer.&nbsp;

Images and videos of the incident show protesters being restrained with zip ties and led into police vans. However, the number of those detained may rise as they continue processing arrests.&nbsp;

The rally on Wednesday afternoon also follows a smaller protest near the White House on Monday (Oct 16) which, according to JVP, drew at least 5,000 people. In a series of posts on X, IfNotNow said, “American Jews and allies have now blocked 4+ doors to the White House.”

It added, “We’re prepared to put our bodies in the way of more slaughter – we’re ready to stay here until Biden forces a ceasefire.”&nbsp;

The demonstration led to more than 30 arrests, according to media reports and has been attributed to either breaching safety barriers or obstructing entrances in the vicinity of the White House.&nbsp;

The majority of the 200 people held hostage by the Hamas militant group in Israel and taken to the Gaza Strip are still alive, the Israeli army said in a statement on Friday.

"The majority of the hostages are alive. There were also dead bodies that were taken... to the Gaza Strip," the statement read.

The military further said that out of the hostages, more than 20 were children, while between 10 and 20 were over the age of 60.

There are also between 100 and 200 people considered missing since the Hamas attacks, the army further added.

Last week, the Israeli military released a statement saying that they had found the bodies of some of the hostages abducted by the Hamas militant group during their operations inside Gaza.

"We have found and located some bodies of Israelis who were abducted in the perimeter in the Gaza Strip," military spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner, told a briefing.

Since Hamas launched an unprecedented attack against Israel on Oct 7, the Israeli army has orchestrated "localised" raids inside Gaza to support an air offensive on the territory that the Hamas government says has killed more than 2000 people.

Lerner said the bodies of hostages were found on these "small, close-perimeter raids into the Gaza Strip".

The Israeli military has carried out air raids on thousands of Hamas targets in Gaza, said the spokesman.

"They include quality targets such as drone facilities, they include naval facilities, they include command and control facilities, they include all of the rocket facilities," Lerner said.

Jamila al-Shanti, the first woman elected to the militant group Hamas' political politburo, was killed in an Israeli airstrike, reported The Times of Israel citing Hamas-affiliated media on Thursday (Oct 19).

Just hours before, the Israeli Defense Forces had released a statement saying that it had killed the highest commander of Gaza's Popular Resistance Committees, Rafat Abu Hilal in Rafah.

The PRC is a union of terror groups that oppose the Palestinian Authority and Fatah's ties with Israel.

68-year-old Shanti was the widow of Hamas co-founder Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi and was elected to its politburo in 2021. The 15-member council is the terror organisation's highest decision-making body.

Her husband was killed in an Israeli targeted assassination in 2004.

<h2>Senior Hamas commander Ayman Nofal killed in Gaza air strike</h2>

Hamas on Tuesday released a statement saying, "Ayman Nofal, 'Abu Ahmad', a member of the general military council and commander of the central command in Al-Qassam Brigades, was killed" in an Israeli strike on the central Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military confirmed Nofal's killing and said that he was one of the most dominant figures in Hamas. An army statement described Nofal as the group's former head of military intelligence, who has been involved in manufacturing weapons and directing rockets fired at Israel.

IDF also said that Nofal was "involved in planning the abduction of Gilad Shalit", a soldier released in 2011 after being held for more than five years.&nbsp;

In the latest developments from the intensifying conflict, the Palestinian health ministry said that at least seven Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces across the West Bank on Thursday (Oct 19).&nbsp;

This comes after Israeli police said they were clashing with Palestinian gunmen in the Nur Shams refugee camp near the city of Tulkarem, amid an arrest raid.&nbsp;

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said at least 10 of their officers have been wounded, one of whom is said to be in serious condition.

The Israeli Army has also arrested around 524 wanted Palestinians across the West Bank and claimed that among those, more than 330 are affiliated with Hamas.&nbsp;

The debate (slanted) in the Western press is ‘Israel’s right to defend itself’ and ‘proportionality’. This is not to deny any nation-state its legitimate right of/for defending itself but to put matters into perspective: What constitutes ‘the right to self-defence'? Does it have boundaries or limits? Who determines that? What is proportionality (in war)? What are its ‘legitimate’ parameters? And, again, who determined it? These are not and should not be mere ‘catchwords’ or ‘buzzwords’ that can be bandied about cavalierly. How these are defined and employed in practice pertains to the ‘pity of war’- something the Middle East may be on the cusp of. Against all norms and canons of international law, Israel, after Hamas attacks, is indulging in an organised orgy of violence. And it is getting away with it. Why?

The answer is multidimensional but one major prong of it is the West’s collective guilt over the Holocaust that caused immense suffering, death and depredation to European Jews. In a ‘never again’ formulation, by crafting the tenets of Zionism – that sought to create a Jewish homeland in historic Palestine, Israel was established in 1948. Israel also crafted a self-identity for itself that suggested it being a ‘western outpost’,‘ a citadel of civilisation’ in a sea of ‘Arab despotism’. The Arabs, especially Palestinians, in this schema were denigrated as uncivilised barbarians and a regressive despotic race - &nbsp;an echo of which the world is witnessing in the likes of Ben Shapiro who leave no stone unturned to dehumanise Palestinians. The explicit and implied aim of Shapiro is to ‘manufacture consent’ and complicity in the killing, maiming and dispossession of Palestinians. All this may be rationalised as the rhetorical flourishes and ‘bull shit’ based on self-righteousness and dismissed. But, nay, not so easy. This discourse is as insidious as its end game. But what is this endgame and who enables it?

The latter question first. Rewind a week or more to the attacks on Israel which took the country by surprise. An enraged Israel post these attacks had made up its mind: It wanted to destroy the Hamas. But, the country needed political cover for this- something that was ably provided by Western political leaders- Joseph Biden, Lloyd Austin, Ursula Van Meyer of the EU, Keir Starmer of the British Labor Party and, Rishi Sunak and other wannabes. How was this cover deployed and maintained? By drawing an equivalence between ISIS, Al-Qaeda and Hamas - something that is etched in the collective consciousness of the Western publics. Ah, yes to prove themselves right and validate their quest, it was alleged Hamas had murdered (decapitated) 40 babies. &nbsp;

Enabled and emboldened by this, Israel embarked on carpet bombing of Gaza. Ostensible premise: Root out Hamas. This cruel, horrific bombing, withholding of food, water and other essentials meshes into Israel’s endgame. What is that? Key elements of this deliberate, coldly calculated pogrom are: instrumentalise bombing campaigns to harass, harry and kill Palestinians. Orchestrate their movement towards the Egyptian border and create a refugee crisis for Arab states, invade Gaza, finish off Hamas, include the West Bank into the pogrom – essentially and basically ethnically cleanse Palestine. The follow-up appears to be in the nature of creating a rump group of Palestinians- say Bedouins or collaborators or those who cannot leave and forge ‘peace’ with them. Lo and Behold, Israel triumphs and ‘solves’ the Palestinian conflict. The world looks on and cheers.&nbsp;

It also has geo-political and security implications: the Middle East becomes a fraught flashpoint on the cusp of war that will have global implications and it reduces drastically the global security for both states and people. Regarding the latter, there have already been four victims: a 6-year-old Palestinian child, a teacher in France and two Swedes in Belgium. Because Israel’s odious actions polarise the world, its constituent peoples and sets them against each other. There’s every likelihood of more attacks vigilante violence and lone wolf attacks. The world then has become suddenly a very dangerous place for everyone.&nbsp;

'The pity of war’: Why Israel must be stopped

India's External Affairs Ministry, on Thursday (Oct 19), said that the present situation in Gaza is unfavourable for an evacuation and the four Indian citizens stranded in the conflict-torn region will be repatriated as soon as New Delhi gets a chance.

"The situation in Gaza is difficult for any evacuation but if we get a chance, we will get them out," MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

"One of them is in the West Bank," he said.

Further condemning the unprecedented attack on Israel, Bagchi said that for now, there were no reports of any Indian casualty from Gaza.

He said that one Indian who was wounded in the attack has been receiving medical treatment and is now in stable condition.

India called for strict observance of international humanitarian law after a strike on a hospital in Gaza claimed the lives of many.

'Situation in Gaza difficult for evacuation,' says government on Indians stranded in conflict-torn region

At least seven Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces across the West Bank on Thursday (Oct 19), according to the Palestinian health ministry. This comes after Israeli police said they were clashing with Palestinian gunmen in the Nur Shams refugee camp near the city of Tulkarem, amid an arrest raid.&nbsp;

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said at least 10 of their officers have been wounded, one of whom is said to be in serious condition.

The Israeli Army has also arrested around 524 wanted Palestinians across the West Bank and claimed that among those, more than 330 are affiliated with Hamas.&nbsp;

<h2>West Bank clashes: What we know</h2>

The Palestinian health ministry has reported the death of four people in the West Bank refugee camp amid an Israeli raid, on Thursday. Separately, the health ministry also reported the death of three Palestinians across the West Bank, raising the total death toll since the beginning of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas to at least 76.&nbsp;

A report by Al Jazeera citing witnesses also said Israeli forces broke into the camp and confrontations began and described the situation as “very tense” amid fears that the death toll may rise.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the IDF said 10 officers were injured after a bomb blast in the Nur Shams refugee camp, earlier on Thursday, during the arrest raid. In a statement, the police said that the Israeli Border Police came under fire and IEDs were hurled at them.&nbsp;

The Palestinian media outlets also reported gunmen shooting at the Israeli forces and setting off explosive devices in the area. &nbsp;

The IDF also released a video showing a drone strike against a group of Palestinian gunmen in Nur Shams. “The security forces under the direction of the Shin Bet have been operating since the night hours in a divisional operation to counter terrorism in the Nur al-Shams refugee camp…” said the Israeli Air Force on X.&nbsp;

“The forces work to arrest wanted persons, thwart terrorist infrastructures and confiscate weapons. An Air Force aircraft located and attacked an armed terrorist squad that endangered our forces in the area,” the statement added.

According to Palestinian officials, a 32-year-old was fatally shot in the town of Budrus; a 17-year-old was shot dead in the Dheisheh refugee camp; and a 16-year-old was killed after being shot in the head in Tulkarem.

<h2>Over 520 Palestinians&nbsp;arrested: IDF</h2>

The IDF has also arrested 524 wanted Palestinians across the West Bank since October 7 and arrested 80, over the past day, out of which 63 are said to be Hamas members.&nbsp;

Israel-Hamas war: At least 7 Palestinians killed across West Bank; 10 Israeli officers injured amid clashes

United States President Joe Biden, during his visit to Tel Aviv on Wednesday (Oct 18), held an emotional meeting with the Israeli survivors of the Oct 7 rampage by Hamas militants and the first responders who came to their rescue.

Among them was Rachel Edri, a retired grandmother who was held hostage for more than 20 hours by Hamas gunmen and used food and conversations to divert their attention before she was rescued by the Israeli security forces.

As per Israeli media reports, Edri was held hostage along with her husband by heavily armed Hamas militants in her house.

In a conversation with Israel's Channel 12 News, Edri recalled saying to her husband, "If we will die, we will die together".

The couple's son, a police officer, was on the outside, helping the YAMAM counterterrorism force plan a rescue. Aware of the fact, Rachel decided to buy some time.

<h2>'The Plan'</h2>

She told the Israeli outlet that when she saw that the Hamas operatives were agitated, she came up with a plan.

"I saw they were angry, and I asked them if they were hungry," she said.

"I made them coffee and gave them cookies. They started singing Lior Narkis (Israeli singer's) songs to me. I distracted them. I knew my son was helping the YAMAM and that they would come to rescue me."

The next few hours were spent waiting, hoping to be rescued. At around midnight, the couple saw the Israeli Defence Forces approaching.

"At 2:30 in the morning, a grenade was suddenly thrown into our house, I jumped on my wife. Shots passed over us - near the head. I don't know how we survived," (translated from Hebrew) he told the news organisation.

After 15 hours of waiting, the couple was rescued. The Hamas operatives were killed by the Israeli special forces during the rescue operation.&nbsp;

Israel to let aid into Gaza via Egypt, announces Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

The US Treasury on Wednesday (October 18) slapped sanctions on 10 Hamas members, operatives and financial facilitators as the militant group continues to fight Israeli forces. The fresh sanctions target individuals based in Gaza as well in countries like Sudan, Algeria and Qatar.

"The United States is taking swift and decisive action to target Hamas'&nbsp;financiers and facilitators following its brutal and unconscionable massacre of Israeli civilians, including children," said Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

The sanctions came as US President Joe Biden visited Tel Aviv in a show of support to Israel and also to talk with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a separate statement that those who were sanctioned helped Hamas to "carry out acts like the vicious attack on Israel."

"Today's actions are directed at Hamas terrorists and their support network, not Palestinians," he added, calling for a release of hostages in its custody.

Treasury Secretary Yellen said that the US will "continue to take all steps necessary" in order to deny Hamas capability to raise money to carry out "atrocities".

Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo said said that the US is &nbsp;"committed to imposing more sanctions alone, and in coordination with our partners."

The US already considers Hamas a terrorist organization.

The Treasury said that till date, it had targetted nearly 1000 individuals, entities connected to terrorism and terrorist financing by the Iranian regime and proxies including Hamas and Hezbollah.

"In addition to the funds Hamas receives from Iran, its global portfolio of investments generates vast sums of revenue through its assets, estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars," the Treasury said.

<h2>The 'secret' portfolio</h2>

Six of those who faced sanctions on Wednesday were associated with a Hamas "secret investment portfolio."

These include Musa Muhammad Salim Dudin, who is a member of Hamas' Political Bureau, and also Abdelbasit Hamza Elhassan Mohamed Khair, a Sudan-based Hamas financier.

The report emerged following US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Cairo and talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. During his visit, Washington’s top diplomat said that the border crossing between Gaza and Egypt “will be open” to send aid into the Palestinian enclave.&nbsp;

“We’re putting in place with the United Nations, with Egypt, with Israel, with others, the mechanism by which to get the assistance and to get it to people who need it,” said Washington’s top diplomat in Cairo.&nbsp;

<h2>Israel, Hamas deny reports</h2>

A report by news agency Reuters citing two Egyptian security sources said that a ceasefire which will last for several hours had been agreed to begin at 0600 GMT on Monday to allow for the entrance of aid, as well as limited evacuations of foreign passport holders from Gaza.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office as well as Hamas official Izzat El-Reshiq have since denied these reports. “At the moment there is no ceasefire for humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip and the exit of foreigners,” said Netanyahu’s office.&nbsp;

Hamas official Izzat El-Reshiq also told Reuters there was no truth to media reports that Rafah was reopening or that there was a ceasefire.&nbsp;

The Egyptian security sources told the news agency that they were perplexed by the Israeli denial after having received confirmations previously.

<h2>Israel&nbsp;not cooperating, says Egypt</h2>

Egypt&nbsp;Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said Israel is not&nbsp;cooperating with the delivery of aid into Gaza and evacuation&nbsp;of foreign passport holders via the Rafah crossing.

"There is an urgent need to alleviate the suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza,"&nbsp;Shoukry told reporters, adding that talks with Israel had not been fruitful and that the Israeli government "has not taken a position on opening the Rafah crossing from the Gaza side." 
 
During a speech in the Israeli parliament, Netanyahu said that Israel would allow&nbsp;allow aid to reach Gaza, without giving a timeline of when that might happen.&nbsp;

<h2>Situation at Rafah crossing&nbsp;</h2>

Hundreds of tonnes of aid from NGOs and several countries were lined up near the Rafah crossing – the only passage in and out of the Gaza Strip not controlled by Israel – which has been closed since Tuesday (Oct 10).&nbsp;

Egypt has said that the crossing was open but has been made “inoperable” by Israeli strikes on the Palestinian side.&nbsp;The Egyptian presidency, on Sunday, said that it is ramping up efforts to deliver aid to Gaza which has been stuck at the country’s Sinai peninsula.

<h2>UN aid chief heads to Middle East</h2>

UN aid chief Martin Griffiths said on Monday he would be travelling to the Middle East to support negotiations on getting aid to Gaza. He and his office were in “deep discussions” with Israel, Egypt and others over the issue, said the UN official.&nbsp;

A spokesperson for the UN humanitarian office said Griffiths was planning to be in Cairo on Tuesday (Oct 17) and would travel to other locations in the region over the next few days.&nbsp;

Israel, Hamas deny reports of border ceasefire to open Rafah crossing for aid, foreigners’ exit

Colombia demanded on Monday (Oct 16) that Israel’s ambassador to the South American nation, Gali Dagan “apologise and leave” amid a worsening spat over President Gustavo Petro’s remarks on the war with the Palestinian militant group Hamas over the past few days. This comes after Petro compared Israeli attacks on Gaza with the Nazi persecution of the Jews.

On October 7, Hamas launched a surprise attack targeting Israeli towns, settlements and army bases which has led to the death of over 1,400 people. Israel has since retaliated with bombardment in Gaza which has killed at least 2,750, mostly civilians.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Apologise and leave’</h2>

Colombian Foreign Minister Alvaro Leyva said that Dagan should “at a minimum, apologise and leave” after the country’s first leftist president and the Israeli envoy engaged in a war of words on social media.

In one of the posts on X, Petro accused Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant of using language about the people of Gaza similar to what the “Nazis said of the Jews.”&nbsp;

The Colombian president’s remarks came after Dagan urged the president to condemn a “terrorist attack against innocent civilians.” Petro in his response&nbsp;said, “Terrorism is to kill innocent children, whether it be in Colombia or in Palestine.”

Subsequently, the Israeli envoy invited Petro to visit the Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem and the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp – run by Nazi guards during World War II – to which he retorted he saw being “copied in Gaza,” adding that “No democrat in the world can accept Gaza being turned into a concentration camp.”&nbsp;

<h2>Israel’s response</h2>

The remarks have since prompted Israel to summon Colombia’s ambassador, Margarita Manjarrez for what the Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Lior Haiat described as “hostile and anti-Semitic statements.” Petro’s remarks were received with “astonishment,” he added.&nbsp;

He also accused the Colombian president of “expressing support for the atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists, fuelling anti-Semitism, affecting the representatives of the State of Israel and threatening the peace of the Jewish community in Colombia.”&nbsp;

In response to Haitai’s statement, Petro said his country does not support “genocide,” adding that if they had to, Colombia would “suspend foreign relations with Israel.”

Colombia demands Israel envoy ‘apologise and leave’ after criticising prez Petro’s remarks over war with Hamas

Reacting to the footage of the hostage shared by Hamas in the wake of the ongoing war, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that the 21-year-old Mia Schem, who was seen in the video, was abducted by the terrorists last week and that their officials reached out to the family of Mia and are in touch with them.&nbsp;

"Last week, Mia was abducted by Hamas. IDF officials have since informed Mia’s family and are in continuous contact with them," said a post by IDF on X.&nbsp;

"In the video published by Hamas, they try to portray themselves as humane. However, they are a horrific terrorist organization responsible for the murder and abduction of babies, children, men, women and the elderly (sic). At this time, we are deploying all intelligence and operational measures for the return of all hostages-including Mia," they added.

The family of Mia, responding to the clip, stated that they have been happy to see her safe, as per a report published in The Times of Israel.

The mother of Mia was quoted by local media as saying, "Yesterday, I saw she was alive. She was shot in the shoulder. She looks like she is in pain. I can see she is stable and she needs medical care. She is saying what they want her to say. I didn't know till yesterday that she was dead or alive. I beg the world to get her and many others like her back. She had only gone to a party. This is a crime against humanity. We should all gather and bring back everybody home."&nbsp;

Mia is a dual Israeli-French citizen and her family had appealed to France President Emmanuel Macron along with other French families last week to help free their relatives, reported news agency Reuters.&nbsp;

<h2>Hamas release video of hostage&nbsp;</h2>

A video of an Israeli woman, who was taken hostage by Hamas during the October 7 attacks, was released by the terrorist outfit. The military wing of Hamas, Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, released the woman's video who identified herself as 21-year-old Mia Schem. In the video, the arm of the woman can be seen wrapped in bandages.&nbsp;

In the video, the girl said that she is from Sderot, which is a small Israeli city close to the Gaza border. On October 7, the girl was attending the Supernova Sukkot Music Festival on Kibbutz Re'im when the gathering was attacked by Hamas terrorists. Around 260 people were killed at the music fest, and others including Mia, were taken hostage.&nbsp;

Hamas' hostage video: Girl's mom calls it crime against humanity, IDF says terrorists trying to look 'humane'

At least one person was killed and three others were injured after Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah launched missiles at a northern Israeli border village on Sunday (Oct 15), said the Israeli medics. The Shiite militant group backed by Iran later confirmed its role in the anti-tank guided missile attacks which reportedly began in the morning.

<h2>Attacks in northern Israel</h2>

According to Israeli media, Hezbollah launched at least five anti-tank guided missiles at the northern town of Shtula, a farming community, which is opposite the Lebanese community of Ayta a-Shab.

The strike has since prompted the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) to respond with countermeasures against targets in Lebanon and declared a zone within four kilometres of the Lebanese border off-limits to public access saying that it is “isolating the area”.&nbsp;

“The IDF stresses that entering the area is strictly prohibited and asks the public to be vigilant and not enter the area,” said the Israeli army in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Iran-backed militant group said that it struck Israel in&nbsp;retaliation for separate "Israeli aggressions" that killed two civilians and struck a group of journalists, killing a Reuters videographer and wounding at least six others.&nbsp;

The IDF also reported that a second missile targeted a nearby military post.&nbsp;

Subsequently, a third missile was fired at a group of Israeli troops operating on the Lebanon border, said the IDF. However,&nbsp;the Iran-backed group said that the third missile attack targeted an Israeli tank.

A fourth and fifth attack was also reported by the IDF which said that their military posts near Lebanon came under fire due to these anti-tank guided missiles.&nbsp;

In an update, the IDF also said that nine rockets were&nbsp;fired from Lebanon out of which the Israeli military's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/israel-shielding-skies-with-iron-dome-defence-system-what-is-it-and-how-does-it-work-643921">Iron Dome system</a>&nbsp;intercepted five&nbsp;rockets. "IDF is currently striking the launch site in Lebanon," it added.&nbsp;

This comes amid fears that a second front could open up as Israel is in the midst of preparing for a ground operation in Gaza against the Palestinian militant group Hamas over a week after it launched a surprise attack in southern Israel which has led to more than 1,300 deaths in &nbsp;Israel and over 2,300 in Gaza.&nbsp;

<h2>About the victims&nbsp;</h2>

The Israeli Magen David Adom ambulance service said its medics informed that a man in his 40s was dead at the scene in Shtula after the Hezbollah attack on Sunday morning.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, three more men in their 40s – two in moderate condition and one in good condition – were taken to the hospital.&nbsp;

<h2>'Not interested': Israel about war on border with Lebanon</h2>

Following the recent attacks from Lebanon, Israeli&nbsp;Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said that Israel is not interested in having a war on its&nbsp;northern frontier with Lebanon. "We have no interest in a war in the north, we don't want to escalate the situation," Gallant said in a video released by his office.&nbsp;

He added, "If Hezbollah chooses the path of war, it will pay a very heavy price...But if it restrains itself, we'll respect the situation and keep things the way they are, despite them being in a process of shooting from both sides."

<h2>UN peacekeeper's HQ in southern Lebanon hit</h2>

The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon said its headquarters was struck by a rocket in the southern town of Naqoura amid&nbsp;exchanges of fire on the border with Israel. 
 
"Our headquarters in Naqoura was hit with a rocket and we are working to verify from where. Our peacekeepers were not in shelters at the time. Fortunately, no one was hurt," said the&nbsp;UNIFIL&nbsp;in a statement.&nbsp;

This comes as convoys of humanitarian aid are getting stacked up near Egypt’s border with the Gaza Strip, a report by the news agency AFP citing witnesses on Sunday, as it is unable to enter the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/israels-military-gives-three-hour-deadline-to-civilians-to-evacuate-northern-gaza-amidst-impending-attack-647194">Palestinian enclave</a> amid bombardment by Israel.&nbsp;

During his visit, Blinken said that the border crossing between Gaza and Egypt "will be open" to send&nbsp;aid into the Palestinian enclave.&nbsp;

<h2>Blinken in Cairo</h2>

Washington’s top diplomat arrived in Egypt following his visit to Saudi Arabia where he held what he described as “very productive” talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.&nbsp;

During the meeting, the Saudi crown prince stressed the need to find ways to stop the conflict and respect international law, including by lifting the Israeli blockade on Gaza, according to the Saudi state news agency SPA.&nbsp;

"We're putting in place with the United Nations, with Egypt, with Israel, with others, the mechanism by which to get the assistance and to get it to people who need it," said Washington's top diplomat in Cairo.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;United States had appointed an envoy, veteran former diplomat David Satterfield, to work on aid to Gaza, said Blinken.&nbsp;

“Secretary Blinken will return tomorrow for further consultations with Israeli leaders,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters as Blinken arrived in Cairo.

<h2>‘Collective punishment’: Sisi&nbsp;on Israeli action&nbsp;in Gaza</h2>

Sisi told Blinken that Israel’s reaction to Hamas’ attack has gone beyond self-defence and amounted to collective punishment.&nbsp;

The remarks were made in televised comments during a meeting with Washington’s top diplomat in Cairo where he also said that he rejected the targeting of any civilians in the conflict.

<h2>Egypt ramps up efforts to get aid to Gaza</h2>

A statement from the Egyptian president’s office which was issued following a meeting of the national security council said Egypt rejected any plan to displace Palestinians “to the detriment of other countries” and Cairo’s own security was a red line.

Egypt’s president has also proposed a summit to discuss the crisis, according to the statement.

The Egyptian presidency has also said that it is ramping up efforts to deliver <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/true-humanitarian-crisis-gazans-walk-30-km-south-many-sheltering-at-al-shifa-hospital-reluctant-to-move-646463">aid to Gaza </a>as humanitarian aid from several countries is building up in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula due to a failure to reach a deal enabling its safe delivery into the Palestinian enclave.&nbsp;

<h2>Humanitarian aid stuck on border</h2>

Images show a convoy of trucks carrying humanitarian aid as well as volunteers lined up near the Rafah crossing – the only passage in and out of the Gaza Strip not controlled by Israel – which has been closed since Tuesday (Oct 10).&nbsp;

On Sunday, witnesses told AFP that concrete blocks installed by the Egyptians to fortify the border following Israel’s bombings were still in place indicating that no passage was being considered any time soon.

In an interview with CNN, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said that while the Rafah crossing was open, the roads leading to it in Gaza were “inoperable” due to Israeli bombardment.

The United Nations aid chief Martin Griffiths on Saturday said that the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/israeli-strikes-kill-gaza-civilians-including-children-on-safe-routes-reports-646972">humanitarian situation</a> in Gaza is now “fast becoming untenable,” with no power, water or fuel in Gaza, and food is running dangerously low.&nbsp;

Israel-Hamas war: Blinken visits Cairo; Egypt steps up efforts to break impasse over Gaza aid

As the world’s focus has mainly been on the ongoing war in Gaza, Israel may be in the midst of preparing for a two-front war. The Israeli army on Monday (Oct 16) said that they activated a plan to evacuate residents next to Lebanon a day after exchange&nbsp;of fire with Hezbollah which has since led to the death of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/at-least-one-killed-three-injured-after-hezbollah-attacks-in-northern-israel-israeli-army-isolates-area-647219">one civilian and wounded three others</a>.&nbsp;

The focus has also shifted to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/israel-hamas-war-at-least-44-palestinians-killed-in-west-bank-more-than-200-arrested-since-saturday-646456">West Bank</a> where Israel’s devastating bombing campaign on Gaza in retaliation to the Palestinian militant group Hamas’ attack on southern Israel has fuelled deadly violence sparking concerns that it could also erupt into another front in the war.&nbsp;

<h2>Israel-Lebanon tensions</h2>

The Israeli military said that they have activated a plan to evacuate residents within a two-kilometre zone of Lebanon. This comes a day after at least one civilian was killed and three others were injured after Iran-based Lebanese militant group Hezbollah launched missiles at a northern Israeli border village.&nbsp;

The plan involves the evacuation of 28 Israeli settlements in the northern part of the country, the residents of which will be moved to state-subsidised guest houses, said the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the ministry of defence, in a statement.&nbsp;

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, on Sunday&nbsp;that Israel is not interested in having a war on its northern frontier with Lebanon.

According to the Palestinian Authority’s health ministry, at least 58 Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,100 have been injured since Saturday (Oct 7) – after Hamas launched its deadly surprise attack on Israel – in clashes with Israeli troops, arrest raids and attacks by Jewish settlers.&nbsp;

Indian Army studying Israel-Hamas war to draw lessons, upgrade strategy: Report

Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan on Sunday (Oct 15) slammed some of its officials on X, and "severed ties" with those who shook hands with an Iranian minister.&nbsp;

The United Nations was accused by him of "living under a rock" and having "blood on its hands". "The UN's support for and legitimisation of genocidal terrorists is a threat to civilization!," Ambassador Erdan wrote in one of his posts.

The ambassador was apparently miffed by a post shared by Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Co-ordinator Martin Griffiths. "The specter of death is hanging over #Gaza. With no water, no power, no food and no medicine, thousands will die. Plain and simple," Griffiths had posted.

Israel envoy accuses UN of having 'blood on its hands' over Iran minister handshake

Iran on Saturday (Oct 14) issued a fresh warning to Israel calling it to halt its offensives against Gaza before it is "too late".

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, during his visit to the Lebanese capital Beirut, said that there was still a political opportunity to avert a widespread crisis in the region but "in the next few hours, it will be too late".

"There is still a political opportunity to prevent a widespread crisis in the region," Amir-Abdollahian told a press conference in Beirut after stops in Baghdad and Damascus.&nbsp;

But "maybe, in the next few hours, it will be too late," he said, warning that pro-Iran militants "have designed all the scenarios and are prepared, and their finger is on the trigger to shoot."

Although Tehran has voiced support for Hamas, Iranian Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei denied his country's involvement in the unprecedented attacks launched by the militant group on Israel.

"The supporters of the Zionist regime (Israel) and some people in the usurping regime (a reference to USA) have been spreading rumours over the past two or three days, including that Islamic Iran was behind this action. They are wrong," Khamenei said.

"This destructive earthquake (Hamas' attack) has destroyed some critical structures (in Israel) which will not be repaired easily ... The Zionist regime's own actions are to blame for this disaster," he said.

Earlier on Friday (Oct 13), Hezbollah warned Israel that it is "fully prepared" to join militant group Hamas in the war when the time is right.

"We, as Hezbollah, are contributing to the confrontation and will (continue) to contribute to it within our vision and plan," Hezbollah deputy chief Naim Qassem told a pro-Palestinian rally in Beirut's southern suburbs.

"We are fully prepared, and when the time comes for action, we will take it," he said.

"The behind-the-scenes calls with us by great powers, Arab countries, envoys of the United Nations, directly and indirectly telling us not to interfere will have no effect,", he said adding, "Hezbollah knows its duties perfectly well.

Situation in Gaza</h2>

Hamas launched a surprise attack on Saturday (Oct 7) which led to the death of 1,300 Israelis, mainly citizens and wounded thousands of others, while the Palestinian militant group also captured hundreds of people from southern Israel.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, in Gaza, Israeli strikes have killed at least 324 people in the past 24 hours alone, including 126 children, claimed the Hamas-controlled health ministry, on Saturday. The total death toll has risen to 2,215, including 724 children.

The Israeli military dropped pamphlets across northern Gaza, on Friday (Oct 13) warning the densely populated region’s 1.1 million people to evacuate and move towards the south.&nbsp;

A report by Al Jazeera citing the ministry of health in Gaza said at least 28 medical staff have been killed and 15 hospitals have been damaged by Israeli shelling and air raids.

According to the UN’s humanitarian agency OCHA, more than 1,300 buildings and 5,540 “housing units” in the Gaza Strip have been destroyed. Additionally, around 3,750 more homes were so badly damaged they were uninhabitable, said the UN agency.&nbsp;

<h2>Israel accused of ‘war crimes’</h2>

In a letter addressed to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh on Saturday (Oct 14) accused Israel of committing war crimes and preventing humanitarian aid from entering the blockaded enclave.&nbsp;
