A plane carrying 17 Thai hostages freed by Hamas landed in Bangkok on Thursday (Nov 30) said the country's foreign ministry. Family members waited to greet the freed captives at Bangkok’s main airport.

On Wednesday, Thai Foreign Minister &nbsp;Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara was seen holding back tears as he welcomed fellow Thais released to Israel by Hamas.&nbsp;

One of the Thais told&nbsp;the Israeli Army about his experience while in Hamas captivity and said that Israelis being held with him were being treated extremely harshly compared to the other foreign nationals.

“I was with Israelis, and there were guards all the time. The Jews who were with me were treated more harshly. Sometimes they were beaten with electrical cables,” said the Thai national, as quoted by Times of Israel.&nbsp;

He said the compound where they were held was “quite large”.

He recalled how he would walk around counting steps to pass the time, Israeli media quoted him as saying. “One pita a day. Sometimes there were cans of tuna that the four of us shared,” he said, adding that there was very little food for the hostages to eat.

He added, “Sometimes there was a piece of cheese. Once, they let us shower.”

<h2>‘We survived! We survived!’</h2>

Two more Thai workers were set free on Tuesday (Nov 28), bringing the total number of Thai nationals released to 23.

“We survived! We survived!” Thai workers cheered upon their arrival at Shamir Medical Center, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

“We are not part of the conflict,” Parnpree told Reuters in an interview later on Wednesday after an emotional meeting with the workers a day prior.&nbsp;

Parnpree also spoke about how he held talks with several countries in the Middle East with Hamas contacts to secure the release of Thai nationals who continue to remain in contact with him and send him updates about the release of hostages even before the news breaks.

“I went around to speak to various countries who can connect with the Hamas group to explain that the Thai workers are innocent, they are not involved in politics, they are not part of anyone's conflict, and they probably don't even know how the situation came to be, who's fighting with whom. They were there to earn a living,” the Thai FM told Reuters.&nbsp;

Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and Thai minister visited 17 freed Thai hostages at the medical centre where they were being treated upon their release.

“Israel is committed to bringing back all the hostages, Israelis and foreigners alike,” said Cohen.&nbsp;

However, the outcome of the talks held between the three parties, also attended by Egyptian officials, was unclear, the source added.

CIA Director William Burns was in Doha "for meetings on the Israel-Hamas conflict including discussions on hostages," a US official said on condition of anonymity. The official did not elaborate on the matter. &nbsp;

Burns, David Barnea, head of Israel's Mossad intelligence service met with the Qatari prime minister a day after Doha announced the extension of the truce deal by two days, which was originally agreed on to be for four days in the Gaza Strip.

<h2>Extension of truce</h2>

The extension was announced by Qatari foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari via a social media post on the same day when it was due to expire overnight.

"The State of Qatar announces that, as part of the ongoing mediation, an agreement has been reached to extend the humanitarian truce for an additional two days in the Gaza Strip," Ansari wrote.

Qatar, with the support of Egypt and the United States, had for days been engaged in intense negotiations to establish and prolong the truce in Gaza.

The extension was hailed by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who called it a "glimpse of hope and humanity in the middle of the darkness of war".

Welcoming the announcement, the White House, in a statement, expressed hope that the humanitarian pause would continue longer.

"Of course, we welcome the announcement," White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters after mediator Qatar said the initial four-day truce was to be lengthened.

"We would of course hope to see the pause extended further, and that will depend upon Hamas continuing to release hostages."

India's daily coronavirus caseload has finally registered a dip. In the last 24 hours, more than 320,000 people have tested positive. It is India's lowest count in 14 days.

For the past two days, new infections have been dropping, with major hotspots&nbsp; Maharashtra, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh reporting a fall in new cases.

The number of active cases have&nbsp;declined as well. It has fallen by 30,000. For the first time in 61 days, India has reported a decline in active cases. It now stands at 3.7 million, almost 20 million people have recovered.

However, there is no fall in the number of fatalities since once again India has reported almost 4,000 deaths in a day.

The pandemic has killed close to 250,000 people in India.&nbsp;The drop in positive cases is a promising sign.&nbsp;However, it cannot be said India has touched the peak. The country's positivity rate remains around 21 per cent, which means more than one out of five people are testing positive.

India needs to bring down the positivity rate to less than five per cent. Only then&nbsp;it will have the second wave be under control.

India needs to test more. On Sunday, India had conducted just 1.47 million tests which is the lowest this month. Monday was an improvement with over 1.8 million tests conducted in the last 24 hours.

In the past two weeks, India has conducted more than 1.9 million tests in a day multiple times. However, the vaccination curve has peaked. The vaccinations were on a high in April.

India has been administering close to two million doses a day with over 170 million shots given so far and just 2.7 per cent of India's population has got both shots.

Maharashtra has stopped vaccination for those above 18. The state says it will only inoculate those above 45 years of age because it does not have enough doses even as the Centre has asked state governments to prioritise those waiting for their second jab.

Freed hostage says she met Hamas chief Sinwar in Gaza, asked how he wasn't 'ashamed' of himself

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office released a statement saying that 10 Israelis and two Thais were freed by the Palestinian militant group.

Germany's foreign minister later confirmed that one out of the 12 hostages released was a German national.

"Weeks of anguish have finally come to an end for other families: just today, 12 hostages were released -- among them, a German woman. I'm relieved for them all," Annalena Baerbock wrote on X

The Israeli military said that the fifth batch of the hostages had safely entered the Israeli territory after they were handed over to the Red Cross on Tuesday.

Qatar's foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari said Tuesday's freed Israelis included nine women and a girl. They included a Filipina dual national and two Argentinean dual nationals.

The two Thai citizens were freed in addition to the 10 Israelis under the terms of the agreement.

Hamas frees 12 more hostages in exchange for 30 Palestinian detainees in latest swap

Eleven more hostages held captive by Hamas during the Oct 7 onslaught&nbsp;were released on Monday (Nov 27) under the truce deal signed by both Israel and the Palestinian militant group.

The Israeli military released a statement saying that the hostages, freed in the Gaza Strip, had arrived safely in the country's territory. This came after the extension of the truce was announced by two days between the warring sides.

"Our forces will accompany them until they are reunited with their families," Israeli Defence Forces said in a statement, adding the military "salutes and embraces the released hostages upon their return home".

This fourth batch of hostages freed by Hamas included French, German and Argentinian dual nationals, Qatar said before their release.

On "the fourth day of the humanitarian truce agreement, 33 Palestinian civilians will be released today in exchange for the release of 11 Israeli detainees from Gaza," Qatar Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said on X.

A report by Bloomberg citing an updated outlook from the bank’s research department said that the war’s “gross effect” on Israel will be as high as $53 billion (198 billion shekels), with more than half of it being spent on defence.&nbsp;

Multiple reports over the past month or so by different entities have also estimated the war’s fiscal price tag around $50 billion.&nbsp;

Separately, the Calcalist financial newspaper citing preliminary finance ministry figures, earlier this month, said that the war will cost Israel $51 billion. The estimate, which equals up to 10 per cent of the country’s GDP, was premised on the war lasting between eight to 12 months.&nbsp;

While the Israeli government is still in the midst of hammering out the new budget, Governor Amir Yaron, speaking about the decision, warned about the fiscal ramifications of the war which the country would have to endure for at least a medium-term and urged caution.

“Alongside the need to provide a budgetary response to needs created by the war, in emergency times as well there is considerable importance to maintaining a responsible fiscal framework,” said Yaron, as quoted by Bloomberg.&nbsp;

Police have arrested the gunman who shot and injured three university students of Palestinian descent in the US city of Burlington in Vermont on Saturday evening (Nov 25).

The suspect was identified as 48-year-old&nbsp;Jason J. Eaton.

The shooting is being seen as a suspected "hate-motivated crime." 
 
Eaton lived in an apartment building near the site of the shooting.&nbsp;

He was&nbsp;detained around 3:30 pm (local time) on Sunday at the site of the attack, the&nbsp;Burlington Police Department said.

What do we know about the incident?

The incident took place on a street near the University of Vermont where the suspect, who was described as a “white man with a handgun,” without saying anything “discharged at least four rounds from the pistol" fled on foot, said the police.&nbsp;

But according to a pro-Palestinian NGO, the suspect was not silent.

The assailant opened fire after he began to shout at and harass the three men who were speaking Arabic, said the Institute for Middle East Understanding.

The police confirmed that two of the young men were wearing keffiyehs – the traditional black and white Palestinian scarf – when they were attacked.&nbsp;

The incident comes amid a rise in anti-Islamic and antisemitic incidents across the US since the beginning of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;

“In this charged moment, no one can look at this incident and not suspect that it may have been a hate-motivated crime,” said Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad, in a statement.&nbsp;

The local police chief said that they are already in touch with “federal investigatory and prosecutorial partners” to prepare for the next steps if the incident is proven to be a hate-motivated crime.&nbsp;

<h2>About the victims</h2>

The victims were identified by their families as Hisham Awartani, a student at Brown University in Rhode Island; Kinnan Abdel Hamid, a student at Haverford College in Pennsylvania; and Tahseen Ahmed, who attends Trinity College in Connecticut.&nbsp;

All three were graduates of the Ramallah Friends School, a private Quaker school in the occupied West Bank and were now attending universities in&nbsp; northeast US.&nbsp;

Two of the students were visiting the home of the third student’s family in Burlington for Thanksgiving.

“Two are stable, while one has sustained much more serious injuries,” said the police speaking about their condition.&nbsp;

The victims’ families issued a joint statement urging the authorities to investigate the shooting as a hate crime.&nbsp;

“As parents we are devastated by the horrific news that our children were targeted and shot,” said the victims’ families. It added, “We call on law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation.”

The advocacy group American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee also called for the incident to be investigated as a hate crime.&nbsp;

“The surge in anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian sentiment we are experiencing is unprecedented, and this is another example of that hate turning violent,” said ADC National Executive Director Abed Ayoub.&nbsp;

The White House said President Joe Biden had been briefed on the shooting.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders called the attack “shocking and deeply upsetting,” adding, “hate has no place here, or anywhere.”

A teacher at a school in Brooklyn, United States recently came under fire after posting comments such as “Let Gaza Burn’’ and “There are no innocents,” on social media, reported the New York Post, amid the ongoing war between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;

The remarks have since prompted local pro-Palestinian activists and organisations to call on the city’s Department of Education to investigate the teacher identified as Robert Rossicone, an instructor at Fort Hamilton School.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Let Gaza burn’</h2>

Fort Hamilton is a public elementary-middle school which caters to students from the largest Palestinian-American and Arabic communities in the state, reported the New York Post.&nbsp;

The controversial remarks by Rossicone were made in response to a Hamas video that the Israeli Army provided CNN of the Palestinian militant group’s October 7 attack on the Jewish state.&nbsp;

Three students of Palestinian descent in the US city of Burlington in Vermont were shot on Saturday (Nov 25) in what the police have described as a suspected “hate-motivated crime.”&nbsp;

Around 45,000 campaigners participated in the rally on Saturday, as per police estimates, which took place on the second day of the four-day truce between Israel and Hamas. The recent truce marked the first pause in fighting giving some respite in the constant bombardment and fighting in the Palestinian enclave, but protesters said that was not enough.

“We need full support for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza,” 64-year-old protester Kate Hudson told Reuters at the rally which began from Park Lane and finished outside the Houses of Parliament.

She added, “It’s very welcome that there is a pause...But this problem needs to be resolved and resolved so that the Palestinians finally have the political settlement that countless U.N. resolutions have enshrined.”

Israeli government spokesperson Eylon Levy slammed Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar over a statement he posted about Emily. Announcing the nine-year-old’s release from Hamas captivity, Varadkar took to X and said “This is a day of enormous joy and relief for Emily Hand and her family.”&nbsp;

“An innocent child who was lost has now been found and returned, and we breathe a massive sigh of relief. Our prayers have been answered,” he added.&nbsp;

In response to the post, Levy told the Irish PM that Hand wasn’t “lost” but had been “brutally abducted by the death squads that massacred her neighbours”.&nbsp;

He also said the way that Varadkar described Emily’s abduction was “how you describe a little girl who went missing during a stroll in a forest, then gets discovered by a friendly hiker.”

In a subsequent post, the Israeli government spokesperson along with an image of a “Lost and Found Box” said, “No wonder the Irish government opposes Israel’s military pressure on Hamas to release innocent hostages. It thought Emily Hand was hiding here.”

Israel on Friday (Nov 24) freed 39 Palestinian women and children from prisons in exchange for the first wave of hostages released by the Hamas in Gaza.

The detainees were welcomed by cheering crowds across the West Bank and some marching in the street carrying Palestinian flags.

A few of them also carried the flag of the Hamas group amid chants&nbsp;in support of Abu Ubaida, the spokesperson of the group's armed wing.

"I am happy but my liberation came at the price of the blood of the martyrs," said Marah Bakir, 24, referring to the nearly 15,000 deaths across the Gaza Strip that its Hamas-led government says were caused by Israel's military offensive.

Freedom from "the four walls of the prison" is "magnificent", said Bakir, who had been in custody for eight years.

Thirteen Israeli hostages were first handed over to the Red Cross, which then placed them in the custody of Israeli forces after a medical examination.

They entered Egypt through the Rafah crossing and were then handed over to the Israeli forces.

Nearly more than 100 Palestinian prisoners are scheduled to be released over the coming four days and more may be released if the truce is extended.

Israel frees 39 Palestinian prisoners in Gaza hostage deal

The Israeli Defense Forces has received a second list of hostages who will be released by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Saturday (Nov 25) under a truce deal, the office of Israel's prime minister wrote in a statement on Friday.

Israeli security officials were reviewing the list of names which was not made public until the safe release of the hostages, the statement added.

Israel's Hostage Coordinator Brig. Gen. (res.) Gal Hirsch had passed on the information to the families of the captives, the statement said.

In a first batch of swap, Hamas freed a total of 24 hostages which included Israeli women and children and Thai farm workers, and a Filipino&nbsp;who were handed over to Egyptian authorities at the Rafah border crossing, the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Expressing concern for the hostages released, the US president said that the ones held captive by Hamas went through a very hard time and that it was the start of a long journey for them towards healing.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu calls hostage truce deal 'right decision', asks for cabinet's backing

Islamic Jihad, the Palestinian terrorist group, announced on Wednesday (November 22) announced that Hanna Katzir (76) an Israeli hostage has passed away. Islamic Jihad had said earlier month that it would release Katzir and a 12-year-old boy on humanitarian and medical grounds. The group had circulated a video and a message saying this.

As per the deal, Hamas is going to release 50 hostages in its custody in exchange for 150 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody. If Hamas releases another 50 hostages, Israel will release 150 more prisoners. Israel has already released list of 300 prisoners who will be gradually released under the deal.

A Hamas official has been quoted by Al Jazeera as saying that the truce between the warring sides will begin at 10 am on Thursday (Nov 23).

Hamas fighters crossed Gaza Strip border and launched attack in southern Israel on October 7 and, as per Israeli tally, killed 1200 people and took more than 200 hostages. Israel then launched an overwhelming military attack with thousands of air raids on the Palestinian enclave. Israeli tanks and troops&nbsp;also launched ground attack.

Seventy-six year old hostage dies hours before Israel-Hamas hostage release deal

Jamal Muhammad Haniyeh, the oldest grandson of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has been killed in an Israeli attack, multiple media reports said. "The company, as a shipping concern, will not be commenting further on the political or geopolitical situation."

The Bahamas-flagged Galaxy Leader's crew comprises nationals from Bulgaria, Ukraine, the Philippines, Mexico and Romania, Galaxy Maritime said. The vessel is chartered by Japan's Nippon Yusen.
