Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday (Oct 28) said that Tel Aviv would explore "every option" available in order to secure the release of more than 220 hostages that were held captive by the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza during its onslaught on Oct 7.

He further stated that his country has begun the “second stage” of its war against the militant group.

“We have one main goal to beat the enemy and guarantee our existence,” he said at the press conference.

Netanyahu further elucidating on the military offensive remarked that the fighting inside the Gaza Strip would be "long and difficult" as the Israeli ground forces operate in the besieged Palestinian enclave for more than 24 hours.

"The war in the (Gaza) Strip will be long and difficult and we are prepared for it," Netanyahu told a news conference after meeting families of hostages held in Gaza since surprise Hamas attacks on southern Israel on October 7.

Israel's army relentlessly hammered the territory on Saturday after fierce overnight bombardment that rescuers said destroyed hundreds of buildings three weeks into a war sparked by the deadliest attack in the country's history.&nbsp;

"Given the manner in which military operations have been conducted until now, in the context of the 56-year-old occupation, I am raising alarm about the possibly catastrophic consequences of large-scale ground operations in Gaza and the potential for thousands more civilians to die," Turk said.&nbsp;

"There is no safe place in Gaza and there is no way out. I am very worried for my colleagues, as I am for all civilians in Gaza."&nbsp;

Israel unleashed its bombing campaign after Hamas gunmen stormed across the Gaza border on October 7, killing 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and seizing more than 220 hostages, according to Israeli officials.&nbsp;

The health ministry in the Hamas-run Gaza said Israeli strikes had killed 7,703 people, mainly civilians, including more than 3,500 children.&nbsp;

The UN rights chief also condemned the Internet and telecommunications blackout that has hit the Palestinian enclave since Friday.&nbsp;

"Compounding the misery and suffering of civilians, Israeli strikes on telecommunications installations and subsequent Internet shutdown have effectively left Gazans with no way of knowing what is happening across Gaza and cut them off from the outside world," he said.&nbsp;

"Ambulances and civil defence teams are no longer able to locate the injured, or the thousands of people estimated to be still under the rubble.&nbsp;

"When these hostilities end, those who have survived will face the rubble of their homes and the graves of their family members," Turk said.&nbsp;

He called on all parties "to do all in their power to de-escalate the conflict".&nbsp;

The conflict is the fifth and deadliest in Gaza since Israel unilaterally withdrew from the Palestinian territory in 2005.&nbsp;

The latest Israeli strikes against Hamas, the Islamist group that has ruled Gaza since 2007, were the most intense since the war broke out. They coincided with ground operations.&nbsp;

UN warns of 'potential for thousands more to die' in Gaza

Palestinian militant group Hamas said that on Moscow's request, it is trying to find eight Russian-Israeli dual citizens who were held captive during its attack on Israel to free them, Russian news agencies reported on Saturday (Oct 28).

Russia, which has begun diplomatic efforts to free hostages held in Gaza, does not consider Hamas to be a terror group and has good relations with it.

"From the Russian side, via the foreign ministry, we received a list of citizens that have dual citizenship," senior Hamas representative Moussa Abu Marzook was cited as saying by the RIA Novosti news agency.&nbsp;

"We are looking for those people... It is hard but we are looking. And when we find them, we will let them go."&nbsp;

"We are very attentive to this list and will process it carefully because we consider Russia to be the closest friend," he said. &nbsp;

"About the peaceful citizens that were taken and that are now in Gaza, we treat them as guests."&nbsp;

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Israel's bombardment of Gaza is against international law and imperils creating a cataclysm that could last for years.

Lavrov made the remarks in an interview with the Belarusian state news agency Belta, which released them on Saturday.

"While we condemn terrorism, we categorically disagree that you can respond to terrorism by violating the norms of international humanitarian law, including indiscriminately using force against targets where civilians are known to be present, including hostages that have been taken," said Lavrov.

"If Gaza is destroyed and 2 million inhabitants are expelled, as some politicians in Israel and abroad propose, this will create a catastrophe for many decades, if not centuries," warned Lavrov.

"It is necessary to stop, and to announce humanitarian programmes to save the population under blockade."

Lavrov also said that Russia was in close contact with Israel too.

"We remain in full contact with Israel, and our ambassador is regularly in touch with them," said Lavrov.

"We are sending signals about the need to seek a peaceful solution and not to follow through with this announced 'scorched earth' strategy."&nbsp;

“The Saudi leadership was hopeful that a ground operation could be avoided for reasons of stability as well as the loss of life,” said Blumenthal, while speaking to The New York Times on Thursday (Oct 26). The government officials of Saudi Arabia that it would be “extremely harmful”, he said.

Israel's ground invasion of Gaza can turn catastrophic, Saudi Arabia warns US

The United Nations General Assembly, on Friday (Oct 27) overwhelmingly voted in favour of the Jordanian resolution which called for an immediate humanitarian truce between Israel and the Palestinian terror group Hamas. The resolution also demands “continuous, sufficient and unhindered” provisions to supply aid to Gaza and protection of civilians.&nbsp;

On the other hand, the resolution proposed by Canada and backed by 35 member states, including the United States which sought condemnation of Hamas and its attacks on southern Israel on October 7, failed to garner enough votes.&nbsp;

This comes after the UNGA and the Security Council failed four times to pass a resolution to take action in Gaza over the past two weeks.&nbsp;

<h2>What do the two resolutions say?</h2>

The resolution proposed by Canada, the first one to be voted on, said that it “unequivocally rejects and condemns the terrorist attacks by Hamas” in Israel, including the taking of more than 200 hostages.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Jordanian resolution, which was backed by 40 member states, called for an “immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce”. It also demanded compliance with international humanitarian law amid the ongoing war as well as provisions to supply aid to Gaza.&nbsp;

The Jordan-authored resolution also called for the “immediate and unconditional release” of all civilians held captive. However, the resolution did not mention Hamas’ attacks on southern Israel.&nbsp;

While these resolutions are not binding or represent the official position of the UNGA until adopted they hold political weight. This comes as the pressure on Israel has been ramped up in recent days after it said that it would launch a “ground operation” in Gaza.

<h2>What happened?</h2>

The Canada-led resolution failed after managing to garner enough votes with 88 nations in favour, 55 against, and 23 nations abstaining. On the other hand, the Jordanian resolution was adopted by the UNGA with 120 votes in favour, 14 against and 45 abstentions.

General Assembly&nbsp;stressed on the “importance of preventing further destabilization and escalation of violence in the region”, urging “all parties to exercise maximum restraint and upon all those with influence on them to work toward this objective.”

This comes amid fears that the war between Israel and Hamas could expand to the rest of the region. It has also called on Israel to cancel its order to civilians in northern Gaza – as many as 1.1 million people – to move to the south of the Palestinian territory.&nbsp;

The General Assembly “firmly rejects any attempts at the forced transfer of the Palestinian civilian population,” the resolution said. It also called for the “immediate and unconditional release of all civilians who are being illegally held captive,” but did not mention Hamas anywhere in the text.&nbsp;

<h2>Israel slams ‘ridiculous’ resolution</h2>

Gilad Erdan, Israel’s permanent representative to the UN, reiterated the country’s right to defend itself and slammed the resolution which does not mention Hamas’ attacks which was one of the worst ones that Israel has witnessed in its 75-year-old history.

“This ridiculous resolution has the audacity to call for a truce, the goal for this resolution’s truce is that Israel should cease to defend itself, so Hamas can light us on fire,” said Erdan. “Why are you defending murderers? Why are you defending terrorists…? What is going on here?”&nbsp;

He also said that Israel is “closely monitoring” the humanitarian situation in Gaza, “and we know that there is no humanitarian crisis in accordance with humanitarian law trusting the reports coming out of is exactly like trusting reports from ISIS,” referring to the Islamic State militant group.&nbsp;

<h2>Hamas, Palestinian Authority welcome decision</h2>

Hamas and the Palestinian Authority welcomed the adoption of the Jordanian resolution. “We demand its immediate application to allow the entry of fuel and humanitarian aid for civilians,” said the Palestinian militant group in a statement.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Authority Israel’s campaign against the Palestinian people “reaches a new peak of brutality,” there was “a solid international position rejecting Israel's unhinged aggression”.

The United Nations General Assembly, on Friday (Oct 27) overwhelmingly voted in favour of the Jordanian resolution which called for an immediate humanitarian truce between Israel and the Palestinian terror group Hamas.

The resolution also demands “continuous, sufficient and unhindered” provisions to supply aid to Gaza and protection of civilians. On the other hand, the resolution proposed by Canada and backed by 35 member states, including the United States which sought condemnation of Hamas and its attacks on southern Israel on October 7, failed to garner enough votes. This comes after the UNGA and the Security Council failed four times to pass a resolution to take action in Gaza over the past two weeks. What do the two resolutions say? The resolution proposed by Canada, the first one to be voted on, said that it “unequivocally rejects and condemns the terrorist attacks by Hamas” in Israel, including the taking of more than 200 hostages. Meanwhile, the Jordanian resolution, which was backed by 40 member states, called for an “immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce”. It also demanded compliance with international humanitarian law amid the ongoing war as well as provisions to supply aid to Gaza. The Jordan-authored resolution also called for the “immediate and unconditional release” of all civilians held captive. However, the resolution did not mention Hamas’ attacks on southern Israel. While these resolutions are not binding or represent the official position of the UNGA until adopted they hold political weight. This comes as the pressure on Israel has been ramped up in recent days after it said that it would launch a “ground operation” in Gaza. What happened? The Canada-led resolution failed after managing to garner enough votes with 88 nations in favour, 55 against, and 23 nations abstaining. On the other hand, the Jordanian resolution was adopted by the UNGA with 120 votes in favour, 14 against and 45 abstentions. General Assembly stressed on the “importance of preventing further destabilization and escalation of violence in the region”, urging “all parties to exercise maximum restraint and upon all those with influence on them to work toward this objective.” This comes amid fears that the war between Israel and Hamas could expand to the rest of the region. It has also called on Israel to cancel its order to civilians in northern Gaza – as many as 1.1 million people – to move to the south of the Palestinian territory. The General Assembly “firmly rejects any attempts at the forced transfer of the Palestinian civilian population,” the resolution said. It also called for the “immediate and unconditional release of all civilians who are being illegally held captive,” but did not mention Hamas anywhere in the text. Israel slams ‘ridiculous’ resolution Gilad Erdan, Israel’s permanent representative to the UN, reiterated the country’s right to defend itself and slammed the resolution which does not mention Hamas’ attacks which was one of the worst ones that Israel has witnessed in its 75-year-old history. “This ridiculous resolution has the audacity to call for a truce, the goal for this resolution’s truce is that Israel should cease to defend itself, so Hamas can light us on fire,” said Erdan. “Why are you defending murderers? Why are you defending terrorists…? What is going on here?” He also said that Israel is “closely monitoring” the humanitarian situation in Gaza, “and we know that there is no humanitarian crisis in accordance with humanitarian law trusting the reports coming out of is exactly like trusting reports from ISIS,” referring to the Islamic State militant group. Hamas, Palestinian Authority welcome decision Hamas and the Palestinian Authority welcomed the adoption of the Jordanian resolution. “We demand its immediate application to allow the entry of fuel and humanitarian aid for civilians,” said the Palestinian militant group in a statement. <h2>What happened in West Bank?</h2>

According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, Israeli troops killed four Palestinians during a dawn raid in the north of the occupied West Bank. Two of those killed were identified as members of Hamas.

The protests in the West Bank were said to have started just hours after the raid. At least three Palestinians were also killed in “violent clashes” in the city of Jenin during an incursion by “a large contingent” of Israeli forces, reported Wafa.

Around a dozen people were injured during the skirmishes, claimed a Palestinian news agency report. Protests also erupted in Hebron in the West Bank, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

The continued Israeli raids as well as alleged attacks by the settlers in the West Bank have sparked protests and unrest for months now, but the situation has worsened since Hamas launched its surprise attack on southern Israel from Gaza on October 7.&nbsp;

According to the Israeli military, their personnel came under attack during arrest operations in the city of Jenin and fired back, killing two men.&nbsp;

Subsequently, the Islamic Jihad group confirmed one of them belonged to it and Hamas, in a separate statement, confirmed that one of their fighters was killed in Jenin.&nbsp;

The death toll due to the violence in the West Bank since the beginning of the war now stands at 110, reported Wafa.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened in Jerusalem?</h2>

Israeli security forces stopped young Palestinians from entering Al-Aqsa mosque, a contested site which has been at the centre of many deadly clashes and fights between Israelis and Palestinians over the years.&nbsp;

According to a Reuters journalist, a large number of Israeli police kept guard around Al-Aqsa as Palestinians gathered for Friday prayers and at one point they fired tear gas.&nbsp;

This was the third week in a row that Palestinians were restricted from praying at the mosque following the Hamas assault on southern Israel.&nbsp;

Palestinians were reportedly made to say prayers outside the Old City, gathering by roadsides while Israeli security forces watched. However, eventually, about 5,000 elderly worshippers were allowed into Al-Aqsa mosque.&nbsp;

According to the Jerusalem Islamic Endowments Department, which is in charge of the mosque, said that normally about 50,000 would take part.&nbsp;

Short-form video hosting platform TikTok&nbsp;on Friday (Oct 27)&nbsp;rebuffed accusations by the Malaysian government that it was restricting content supporting the Palestinians, saying that the claim was "unfounded".

As per Reuters, a TikTok spokesperson&nbsp;in an email to the news agency rejected the claims and said that their firm is committed to safeguarding the community.

Tech giant Meta responded saying there was "no truth" to the allegations levelled against the organisation by Kuala Lumpur and that it had no intention to suppress the voices of Palestinians on its platform.

Both Meta and TikTok designate Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist movement that governs Gaza, a "dangerous organisation" and restrict content glorifying it.

Malaysia's communications regulator on Thursday (Oct 26) issued a warning to tech giant Meta and TikTok over allegedly restricting pro-Palestinian content on their respective platforms.

Communications Minister, Fahmi Fadzil, took to his official X account and said that he would take a very firm approach if the social media firms fail to address this concern.

"If this issue is ignored, I will not hesitate to take a very firm approach and stance," the minister said in a post.

Fahmi further said that many parties had called on the government to take stern measures against social media platforms for allegedly blocking pro-Palestinian content.&nbsp;

"Our policies are designed to keep people safe on our apps while giving everyone a voice," the spokesperson said on Thursday as per news agency Reuters.

Fahmi said that his country had a right to freedom of speech regarding the Palestinian cause, further reiterating that the right would not be taken away.

TikTok rejects Malaysian allegations claiming it restricts pro-Palestinian content on platform

Israel on Friday (Oct 27) accused the Palestinian militant group Hamas of abusing hospitals in the Gaza Strip for military purposes as the conflict in and around the Palestinian territory intensifies.

The Israeli military said that Hamas was using the hospital as a shield for its tunnels and operational centres.

"Hamas has turned hospitals into command and control centres and hideouts for Hamas terrorists and commanders," Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, Israel's chief military spokesman, told a news conference.

Hagari said Hamas was using the hospital system to hide its command posts and entry points into the comprehensive tunnel network under Gaza.

He specifically identified Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest in Gaza, as one from which Hamas militants were operating.

"Hamas has turned hospitals into command and control centres and hideouts for Hamas terrorists and commanders. Additionally, I can confirm that according to the intelligence we have in our hands, there is fuel in hospitals in Gaza," Hagari said.

"Hamas terrorists operate inside and under Shifa Hospital and other hospitals in Gaza," he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also took to his official X account and shared an illustration-based video showing how the militant group used Shifa Hospital as a shelter for its military operations from both above and below the ground.

Earlier, the Commissioner General for the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, rejected that any aid was being redirected.

"We have solid monitoring mechanisms... UNRWA does not and will not divert any humanitarian aid into the wrong hands," Lazzarini said.

Video: Netanyahu claims this is how Hamas uses hospitals as bases to attack Israel

The Gaza Health Ministry run by the Palestinian militant group Hamas released a list of almost 7,000 names of Gazans it said had been killed in Israeli strikes, on Thursday (Oct 26). This comes a day after the United States President Joe Biden cast doubt on its toll figures.&nbsp;

According to the Hamas-run Palestinian health ministry, 7,028 people, including more than 2,900 children have been killed in Gaza, as of Thursday, since its October 7 attacks. In the recent update, the ministry also said that nearly 18,500 people have been injured.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Mainly civilians’</h2>

The list, released by the Gaza health ministry shows the names of the 6,747 victims, mainly civilians. It&nbsp;also gives information about each&nbsp;victim's&nbsp;sex, age and identity card numbers. However, the ministry said 281 bodies had not yet been identified.&nbsp;

The list by the Palestinian militant group, which has not been verified is more than 200 pages long. The United States had “brazenly cast doubt on the truth of the announced toll,” said the Palestinian health ministry in a statement.

It added, “We have decided to announce the details of the names to the whole world so that the truth is known about the genocide perpetrated by the Israeli occupation against our people.” &nbsp;

<h2>US president doubts Gaza death toll</h2>

During a joint press conference&nbsp;at the White House, Biden cast doubt on civilian casualty figures released by the Hamas-run Palestinian health ministry.

“I have no notion that the Palestinians are telling the truth about how many people are killed. I’m sure innocents have been killed, and it’s a price of waging war,” said the US president. He added, “But I have no confidence in the number that the Palestinians are using.”

“Israel has to do everything in its power, as difficult as it is, to protect innocent civilians. It’s difficult,” said the US president.&nbsp;

When asked about the death toll on Thursday, Israeli military spokesman Richard Hecht said “when the Hamas health ministry comes out with the numbers just take them with a pinch of salt.” There have been multiple claims and counterclaims amid the ongoing war.&nbsp;

With an upsurge in violence across the West Bank, the Biden administration has begun to rush its defensive systems into the war-torn region amid fears of broader escalation by Iran and its proxies.&nbsp;

The move by the United States to strengthen its defence capabilities comes after attacks targetting US troops in other parts of the Middle East injured nearly two dozen US personnel since Oct 18.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had also released a statement saying that the recent US deployments to the region were aimed at thwarting the assaults purportedly designed to widen the Israel-Hamas conflict.

"We're concerned about potential escalation. In fact, what we're seeing … is the prospect of a significant escalation of attacks on our troops and our people throughout the region," Austin told ABC's "This Week" programme. "If any group or any country is looking to widen this conflict ... our advice is: don't."

<h2>US military under attack</h2>

Over the past week, American troops stationed in other parts of the Middle East—Iraq and Syria—have come under attacks. There are about 2,500 US troops in Iraq.

Ain al-Asad airbase, which hosts US and other international forces in western Iraq, was targeted by drones and missiles on October 19 evening. Multiple blasts were reportedly heard inside the base.

The attack came after rockets hit another military base hosting US forces near Baghdad’s international airport on Thursday, Iraqi police said.

A day before on Wednesday, US forces in Iraq were targeted in two separate drone attacks, with one causing minor injuries to a small number of troops even though the US military managed to intercept the armed drone.

The spate of attacks on the US military in the Middle East comes amidst the Israel-Hamas war that has divided the Western nations and the Gulf.

<h2>900 US troops heading to Middle East</h2>

The Pentagon on Thursday said that about 900 additional US troops were either heading to the Middle East or had already arrived there to bolster air defences to protect US personnel amid a surge in attacks in the region.

"As part of our efforts to deter a broader conflict and further bolster U.S. force protection capabilities I can confirm that since our initial force posture announcement, approximately 900 troops have subsequently deployed or are in the process of deploying to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. These include forces that have been on 'prepare to deploy' orders and which are deploying from the continental United States," Pentagon Press Secretary Brigadier General, Patrick Ryder said.

Earlier, the Pentagon had announced that Washington is sending an additional squadron of F-16 Fighting Falcon to work alongside an array of capabilities already sent by the United States to the region in recent days in order to further enhance the ability of US forces to defend themselves.

“Our message to any country or group thinking about trying to take advantage of this situation to widen the conflict is: Don't,” warned Pentagon Press Secretary Pat Ryder.

<h2>US sends THAAD, Patriot systems</h2>

The Pentagon said that it was deploying a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and additional Patriot air defence missile system battalions to the Middle East.

In recent weeks, the United States has sent a significant amount of naval power to the Middle East, including two aircraft carriers, their support ships and about 2,000 Marines.

"The United States cannot both send military equipment to the Israeli regime and take charge of managing the war with one hand, while issuing political messages with the other hand, and speak about its opposition to the expansion of the war," IRNA cited the unnamed source as saying, adding Iran's allies "act independently and are not subject to Tehran's orders."&nbsp;

The Russian newspaper Kommersant quoted a member of a Hamas delegation visiting Moscow as saying that time was needed to locate all those who had been abducted by various Palestinian factions in the Hamas attack on October 7.

"They seized dozens of people, most of them civilians, and we need time to find them in the Gaza Strip and then release them," Abu Hamid said.

He said Hamas, which has freed four hostages so far, had made clear it intended to release "civilian prisoners".

But this required a "calm environment", he said, repeating an assertion that Israeli bombing had already killed 50 of those held.&nbsp;

Israel, in turn, has launched air strikes against Gaza which, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, has killed more than 6,500 Palestinians. Jerusalem&nbsp;is also planning a ground invasion of the besieged Gaza Strip.&nbsp;

“Israel has a right, and I would add responsibility, to respond to the slaughter of its people,” the US president told reporters at the White House during a joint press conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese who is in the midst of a visit to Washington.&nbsp;

He also went on to accuse Hamas which has been ruling Gaza of “hiding behind” Palestinian civilians amid Israeli strikes but also called on Israel to follow “laws of war.”&nbsp;

“Israel has to do everything in its power, as difficult as it is, to protect innocent civilians. It’s difficult,” said the US president.&nbsp;

Biden also called for an end to Israeli settler attacks on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank saying that it is “pouring gasoline on the fire.” He added, “They’re attacking Palestinians in places that they’re entitled to be.”

Speaking about what happens once the current crisis is over, the US president said that “there has to be a vision of what comes next” in the region and it should include a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians.

Russia and the United States on Wednesday (Oct 25) voted against each others’ draft resolutions which has further deepened the United Nations Security Council’s deadlock over any unified response to address the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.&nbsp;

The proposals come days after the US vetoed a draft resolution proposed by Brazil which condemned the October 7 terror attacks in Israel by Hamas and called for “humanitarian pauses” in the fighting to allow for aid delivery.

However, US ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield at the time criticised the text for not mentioning Israel’s right to defend itself.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Broadly similar’ US and Russia proposals</h2>

Notably, both resolutions are said to be similarly worded but the Russia-led proposal calls for a “humanitarian ceasefire” while the US has called for a “humanitarian pause” to enable the safe delivery of aid to civilians in Gaza.&nbsp;

Both resolutions condemned the terror attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilians and urged the UN to address the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza.&nbsp;

<h2>Russia, China veto US-led resolution</h2>

Russia and China vetoed the US-led resolution which reportedly shocked several diplomats as it said Israel has a right to defend itself and demanded Iran stop exporting arms to militant groups.&nbsp;

Nine countries, aside from the US, voted in favour of the Washington-led resolution – Albania, France, Ecuador, Gabon, Ghana, Japan, Malta, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.&nbsp;

However, it was rejected since China and Russia – two permanent members of the council – voted against the proposal. Brazil and Mozambique abstained from voting.

Ahead of the vote, Thomas-Greenfield said that the US has “worked exhaustively to draft a strong and balanced text.” She also said that in drafting the resolution, “we listened, we engaged” with humanitarian agencies and that the draft includes mechanisms to protect civilians and UN personnel.&nbsp;

However, after the resolution was double vetoed, Thomas-Greenfield told the 15-member council that she was disappointed and “though today’s vote was a setback, we must not be deterred.”

“The draft does not reflect the world’s strongest calls for a ceasefire, an end to the fighting, and it does not help resolve the issue,” said China’s UN Ambassador Zhang Jun after the vote.&nbsp;

He added, “At this moment, ceasefire is not just a diplomatic term. It means the life and death of many civilians.”

Russia’s Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzya told the council he did not see the point of supporting the US-led draft which, according to him, served the geopolitical interests of one of the members of the council.&nbsp;

However, the Russian proposal failed to garner the minimum number of votes – four – to pass the resolution. A resolution needs at least nine votes and no vetoes by the five permanent members of the Security Council in order for it to be adopted.&nbsp;

Four countries that voted in favour of Russia’s resolution were China, Gabon, and UAE while the US and UK voted against it. Additionally, nine countries abstained from voting for Russia’s proposal.&nbsp;

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that a thirs of Gaza's hospitals have stopped operating.

"We are on our knees asking for that sustained, scaled up, protected humanitarian operation," said WHO regional emergencies head Rick Brennan.

The biggest hospital in north Gaza said on Tuesday that all functions were stopped except the vital departments like the Intensive Care Unit.

Beit Hanoun Hospital, the only other hospital that was still serving patients in north Gaza, has also stopped operations, said Palestinian Health Ministry.

"If the hospital doesn't get fuel, this is going to be a death sentence against the patients in northern Gaza," said Atef al-Kahlout, the hospital's director.

Outbreak of disease seen among displaced Gazans, say doctors

Israel’s military said that it struck several Syrian “military targets”, including Syrian army infrastructure and mortar launchers, early&nbsp;Wednesday (Oct 25) in what it described as a response to rocket launches from Syria towards Israel.&nbsp;

This comes hours after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said two rockets were launched from Syria in&nbsp;northern Israel.&nbsp;

<h2>Rocket launches from Syria</h2>

According to the IDF, the strikes were conducted in retaliation for two rocket launches from Syria towards Israeli communities in the occupied Golan Heights on Tuesday (Oct 24).&nbsp;

The reported rocket launches set off alarms in the Golan Heights communities of Neot Golan, Bnei Yehuda and Givat Yoav.

However, the IDF said that both projectiles landed in open areas. Subsequently, the Israeli forces responded with artillery shelling at the source of the fire in Syria.

So far, Israel has not accused the Syrian army of firing the two rockets while there was no immediate comment from Syria.

With an upsurge in violence across the West Bank, the Biden administration has reportedly begun readying plans for mass evacuations of hundreds of thousands of American citizens from the Middle East.

As per a report by the Washington Post, four officials familiar with the US government’s contingency planning said that the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas has stoked fears of broader escalation.

The officials stated that the Americans living in Israel and neighbouring Lebanon were of distinct concern, further underlining that the mass evacuation was a 'worst-case scenario' and that the government is churning out possible solutions to the problem that are seen as more likely.

However, one of the officials said, it “would be irresponsible not to have a plan for everything.”

The Israeli defence forces, which have been backed by US military aid, have been prepping for the much-anticipated ground offensive against Hamas militants who took the world by surprise after they carried out an unprecedented attack against Israel from Gaza on Oct 7.

According to State Department estimates, there were approximately 600,000 US citizens in Israel and another 86,000 in Lebanon when Hamas attacked.

Guterres, on Tuesday (Oct 24), raised concerns over violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza and called for an immediate ceasefire as the Israeli counter-offensive continues in the besieged Palestinian enclave.

Opening the session, Guterres said there was no excuse for the "appalling" violence by Hamas militants on Oct 7 but also cautioned against "collective punishment" of the Palestinians.

"I am deeply concerned about the clear violations of international humanitarian law that we are witnessing in Gaza. Let me be clear: No party to an armed conflict is above international humanitarian law," Guterres told a Security Council session, without naming Israel.

He said that the Palestinians had been "subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation," telling the Security Council: "It is important to also recognize the attacks by Hamas did not happen in a vacuum."

AFP reported that people taking refuge at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in southern Gaza tore the leaflets after they were dropped by Israeli planes.

Israel has massed forces near the border with the Gaza strip and there is speculation of a ground assault with an aim to free hostages and tackle Hamas.

Israel says that foreign nationals are among the hostages who have been taken to Gaza. The exact whereabouts of those abducted are not known.

<h2>Two hostages freed</h2>

Hamas on Tuesday, freed two elderly hostages. Yocheved Lifshitz (85) and Nurit Cooper (79) were among the people abducted by Hamas terrorists on October 7.

Lifshitz, seated in a wheelchair, interacted with media after her release.

While recounting her ordeal, she said that she 'went through hell'

She described how the terrorists "went on a rampage in our kibbutz, kidnapped me, lay me over a motorcycle... and sped off with me through the ploughed fields". She added that the fighters beat her on the way.

"...they didn't break my ribs but hurt me very much," she said.

She however said that during captivity, "they treated us well" adding that her captors were courteous and a doctor visited every two to three days.

Lifshitz's husband is still in captivity.

"They had everything that men and women needed including shampoo," she told journalists. "We ate the same food they did -- pitas with cream cheese, melted cheese, cucumbers."

Israel air force drops leaflets in Gaza seeking information on hostages

The United States on Monday (Oct 23) accused Iran of “actively facilitating” rocket and drone attacks on its forces in Iraq and Syria. This comes after Iran-backed militias in Iraq claimed responsibility for multiple attacks on US bases in the two countries.&nbsp;

President Joe Biden has since directed the Department of Defense to brace for additional similar attacks and respond appropriately, said White House spokesman John Kirby. He also said that the US has sent a “few” military advisors to Israel.

<h2>Attacks on US military bases</h2>

Kirby said there had been an uptick in such attacks over the last week, particularly over the last few days and that the US would not&nbsp;allow its interests in the region to “go unchallenged.”&nbsp;

Washington also raised concerns about an escalation of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. However, the US has rejected calls for a ceasefire saying its ally Israel has a right to self-defence.&nbsp;

“Iran continues to support Hamas and Hezbollah, and we know that Iran is closely monitoring these events and, in some cases, actively facilitating these attacks and spurring on others who may want to exploit the conflict for their own good or for that of Iran,” said Kirby.&nbsp;

He added, “We know Iran’s goal is to maintain some level of deniability here, but we’re not going to allow them to do that.” This comes as there has been an increase in attacks on US forces in the region, particularly since Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7.&nbsp;

Earlier this week, at least five rocket and drone attacks targeted three Iraqi military bases where&nbsp;American troops are stationed as part of the international coalition set up to fight the Islamic State group.

On Monday (Oct 23), Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iranian-backed militias, said that its forces used two drones to attack US military bases in Deir el-Zour province and in al-Shaddadi further north.&nbsp;

This was after the group also said that it attacked the al-Tanf garrison near the Jordanian and Iraqi borders which is near the desert Rukban camp home to tens of thousands of Syrians.

“We are deeply concerned about the potential for any significant escalation of these attacks in the days ahead,” said the White House spokesperson.&nbsp;

<h2>US sends ‘few’ military advisors to Israel</h2>

Kirby said that the US has also sent a “few” military advisors to Israel, adding that these officers have experience in “the sorts of operations that Israel is conducting, and may conduct in the future” and were “over there to share some perspectives.”&nbsp;

A report by the Associated Press said that the Pentagon has sent military advisers to Israel to help with war planning ahead of their potential ground operation in Gaza.&nbsp;

Among those is Marine Corps Lt. Gen. James Glynn, who has previously helped lead special operations forces against the Islamic State and served in Fallujah, Iraq, during some of the most heated urban combat there, a US official told AP.&nbsp;

White House says Iran ‘actively facilitating’ attacks on US military bases

The spokesperson for Hamas’ military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades said that the Palestinian militant group released two Israeli hostages, on Monday (Oct 23), who were being held in the Gaza Strip. In a statement the spokesperson for Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas said: "We in the Al-Qassam Brigades, through Egyptian-Qatari mediation, released the two detainees, Nurit Yitzhak and Yochved Lifshitz, knowing that the enemy has refused since last Friday to accept their receipt, and is still neglecting the file of its prisoners. We have decided to release them for compelling humanitarian and satisfactory reasons, despite the occupation’s crimes. For more than 8 violations of the procedures that were agreed upon with the mediator brothers that the occupation would adhere to during this day to complete the handover process."

<h2>Israel confirms release</h2>

The militant group had said on Saturday that they wanted to release the same two hostages, but that Israel declined to accept them, according to Times of Israel. Netanyahu’s office, at the time, said it would not respond to Hamas’ “propaganda lies.”

The Israeli PM's office later released a statement confirming that the former hostages were in Israeli custody&nbsp;and are making their way to a hospital in Israel especially set up for them, where they will be reunited with their families.&nbsp;

It also thanked&nbsp;Egypt "for its help" and the Red Cross "for its important life-saving role," adding that the "IDF and&nbsp;the security forces have worked hard in the last few days in all channels to bring about their release and to overcome the many difficulties set by Hamas."

A report by Israel’s Channel 12 said that the families of 79-year-old Cooper and Lifshitz, 85, have been notified of their release from Hamas captivity, adding that their husbands remain in Gaza.

According to the report, both women were abducted from their homes in Nir Oz kibbutz.&nbsp;

The document clearly states 'hostage-taking' as the attack's central aim, as reported by Western media outlets. In the document, the attackers have been instructed to ration their food and keep the hostages for a long duration in an enclosed location. 
 
“Kill the problematic and those who post a threat. Gather some of the hostages in the area and use them as cannon fodder, ensuring they are clearly visible,” read the document, written in Arabic. The document reveals their plan to attack Kibbutz Kfar Sa’ad, which included sweeping two schools along with a youth centre.

<h2>High-level planning</h2>

The officials of the Israeli government said that the manuals showed the high level of planning carried out by Hamas in the last few months before the October 7 attack. 
 
“It shows they were very, very task orientated,” said an IDF spokesman Lt Col Peter Lerner, while speaking to The Telegraph. “It wasn’t just haphazardly ‘let’s cross over and kill whoever we walk into’ but rather that we go in, we take, we attack, we abduct, we tie them up… there’s a whole list of things to do,” he added.

As per the hostage-taking manual, the victims had to be gathered in “pre-determined” locations on maps after every terrorist squad had finished “cleansing their operating areas”. 
 
The documents also included maps in which blue circles were drawn around Kfar Sa’ad and three other villages, which also share a border with Gaza, Alumim, Nahal Oz and Kraf Aza. It was in these villages that Hamas killed dozens of Israeli civilians, which included children and babies, and kidnapped many of them. 
 
The killings of men and women were mentioned as the “last resort”, and the terrorists were asked to use “firearms, smoke and stun grenades, indirect threats, electric shocks, violence and terrorism” to maintain order, as per the document.

Hamas 'abduction manual' states 'hostage-taking' as central aim of Israel attack

Eleven days after killers from Hamas murdered more than 1,400 Israelis in a series of massacres of stomach-turning brutality and Israel responded with devastating air strikes on Gaza, a senior State Department official resigned over Washington’s decision to send more weapons to Israel, a move he said reflected “blind support for one side.”

The official, Josh Paul, worked for 11 years at the State Department’s Bureau of Political and Military Affairs, which handles arms transfers to foreign countries. He rose to a senior position, that of director of congressional and public affairs.

Paul explained his decision in a two-page letter and the points he made raise questions about the US-Israeli relationship that are rarely asked in a country where sympathy for Israel goes back to its foundation 75 years ago. No major speech on Israel by a US&nbsp;president fails to mention that the US&nbsp;was the first to recognise the new state, just 11 minutes after its formation.

Polls after the outbreak of the Hamas-Israeli wars showed that 80 per cent of Americans were siding with Israel. Whether that level of support is stable remains to be seen as graphic images of the death and damage caused by Israeli air strikes on densely populated Gaza will fill US&nbsp;television screens for days to come.

“The response Israel is taking and with it the American support both for that response and for the status quo of the occupation will only lead to more and deeper suffering for both the Israeli and Palestinian people,” his letter said. “This administration’s response – and much of Congress’s as well – is an impulsive reaction built on confirmation bias, political convenience, intellectual bankruptcy, and bureaucratic inertia.”

Israel’s immediate response to the Hamas attacks, described by Paul as a “monstrosity of monstrosities”, was airstrikes that levelled dozens of buildings and a complete siege of Gaza, cutting off water, electricity, food and fuel. UN&nbsp;Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called it collective punishment.

Strong words in a country where criticism of Israeli policy or Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is often conflated with anti-Semitism – as were pro-Palestinian demonstrations across the Middle East, parts of Asia, Europe and the United States condemning Israeli air strikes on Gaza and the country’s occupation of parts of the West Bank.

President Joe Biden flew to Israel 11 days after the October 7 massacre of civilians in villages close to the border with Gaza, pledged America’s support – “Israel, you are not alone. The United States stands with you” – and promised US&nbsp;weapons would continue to give Israel a “qualitative military edge” in the region.&nbsp;

That edge, dubbed QME in military jargon, makes the US-Israeli relationship truly unique. No other country can count on getting the latest and most sophisticated American military hardware and no other country can be secure in the knowledge that deliveries will continue because they are enshrined in US&nbsp;law.&nbsp;

The Congressional Research Service spells it out in detail: “In 2008, Congress enacted legislation (that) defines QME as the ability to counter and defeat any credible conventional military threat from any individual state or possible coalition of states or from non-state actors while sustaining minimal damage and casualties, through the use of superior military means, possessed in sufficient quantity…”

To make sure the requirement for “sufficient quantity” will be met as Israel pounds Gaza with airstrikes and prepares for a ground offensive, Biden has asked Congress for an additional $14.3 billion for Israel. That request is stuck in Congress because Republican Party infighting has left the House of Representatives, which has the power of the purse, without a speaker.&nbsp;

A fact sheet by the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, from which Paul resigned last week, notes that maintaining the QME “has helped transform the Israeli Defense Force into one of the world’s most capable and effective militaries and turned the Israeli military industry and technology sector into one of the largest exporters of military capabilities worldwide.”

Still, the United States has provided military aid of more than $3 billion year after year for decades preceding the 2008 legislation. No country has received as much US&nbsp;aid overall as Israel.

The logic of continued aid to a relatively rich and successful country is puzzling but rarely questioned. Not only has Israel turned into the region’s military superpower but it also is the only country in the Middle East with a nuclear arsenal, though this is rarely mentioned in debates about nuclear proliferation. &nbsp;

(Israel does not admit nor deny having nuclear weapons but the Arms Control Association, a widely-respected Washington-based think tank, cites estimates of up to 90 nuclear warheads, with fissile material stockpiles of more than 200.)

Arming Israel to the teeth made sense during the Cold War when Israel served as an American outpost in a region where the Soviet Union had strategic ambitions and close friends.&nbsp;

As then US&nbsp;Secretary of State Alexander Haig put it at the time: “Israel is the largest US&nbsp;(aircraft) carrier that cannot be sunk, does not carry even one U.S. soldier, and is located in a most critical region for US&nbsp;national security.”

It still is. But today’s geopolitics have changed so much that the United States has dispatched two aircraft carrier strike groups to the eastern Mediterranean to protect what Haig had called a stationary carrier and to prevent the Hamas-Israel conflict from spreading through the region.&nbsp;

Hamas-Israel war: Rare dissent over US arms for Israel raises troubling questions

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced Monday that Britain was sending an additional £20 million ($24 million) of aid to help civilians in Gaza affected by the war between Israel and Hamas.&nbsp;

The announcement brings the amount pledged to Palestinian territories by Britain since Hamas's attack on Israel earlier this month to £30 million, after £10 million was made available last week.&nbsp;

Hamas militants stormed into Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7, and killed at least 1,400 people, mostly civilians who were shot, mutilated or burnt to death on the first day of the raid, according to Israeli officials.&nbsp;

More than 5,000 Palestinians, mainly civilians, have been killed across the Gaza Strip in relentless Israeli bombardments in retaliation for the attacks by the Palestinian Islamist militant group, according to the latest toll from the Hamas health ministry in Gaza.&nbsp;

"We are providing an additional £20 million of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza, more than doubling our previous support to the Palestinian people," Sunak told parliament.&nbsp;

Before the recent pledges, the UK had committed £27 million to Palestinians this year.&nbsp;

Sunak's announcement came while updating lawmakers on the situation in the Middle East following his visit to the region last week.&nbsp;

He said the arrival through the Rafah crossing of some aid trucks into Gaza was "important progress" but added "it is not enough."&nbsp;

"We need a constant stream of aid pouring in, bringing the water, food, medicine and fuel that is so desperately needed," the prime minister added.&nbsp;

Sunak also told MPs that Britain had determined that the explosion at the Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza that killed hundreds of people last Tuesday was probably caused by a missile fired from within Gaza.&nbsp;

Hamas and Israel have blamed each other for the blast at the health facility.&nbsp;

"We have taken care to look at all the evidence currently available," Sunak said.&nbsp;

"On the basis of the deep knowledge and analysis of our intelligence and weapons experts, the British government judges that the explosion was likely caused by a missile, or part of one, that was launched from within Gaza towards Israel," he added.&nbsp;

France's DRM military intelligence agency said on Friday that there was no evidence that an Israeli strike had caused the explosion.&nbsp;

UK PM Rishi Sunak announces extra £20 million aid for civilians in Gaza

Two Israeli officials have stated that a USB drive was recovered from the dead body of a Hamas operative by the Israel Defense Forces which contained instructions for creating a “cyanide dispersion device”, as reported by Israel's local media. 
 
The discovery of the cyanide dispersion device was mentioned in detail by two Israeli officials, and a copy of a classified Israeli foreign ministry cable was accessed by the regional media outlet. 
 
“This finding points to an intention by Hamas to use chemical weapons as part of its terror attack against civilians," read the cable claims, as per the media outlet. 
 
As per the media report, it was not from the leaked file if Hamas had an operational intent for using the chemical weapons or a concrete plan or if the terror group was trying to produce the makeshift weapons.

<h2>Hamas field manual reveals militant's capabilities, bloody plans</h2>

A Hamas field manual, which was accessed by The Washington Post, found two weeks ago showed their preparations and illustrated some of its military capabilities. 
 
The manual, which was discovered on the body of a Hamas fighter, includes instructions on operating certain weapons, offers tips on how to kill with a knife and identifies vulnerabilities in Israeli military equipment. 
 
It appears that the document has been prepared for various units of Hamas’ Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, which includes engineering, anti-armour, infantry, sniper and tunnel specialists along with what the booklet describes as “shock troops.” 
 
“This is a secret military document. It should be kept in a safe place. It is forbidden to move with it except when there are orders,” the first page stated.

Hamas had intentions of using 'chemical weapons' as part of 'terror attack': Report

Israel on Sunday (Oct 22) claimed that "terror operatives" from Islamic Jihad and Hamas were killed in an air strike carried out on a mosque in Jenin, West Bank. 
 
The Al-Ansar mosque was hit in the strike which the Israeli military stated "was used by the terrorists as a command centre to plan the attacks and as a base for their execution". 
 
The Israeli military added that those who were targeted in the strike had carried out "several terror attacks over the last months, and were organising an additional imminent terror attack". It stated that the Israeli army was able to “neutralise” them, without clearly stating the number of people killed in the attack. 
 
The Israel Securities Authority (ISA) and IDF released a statement which confirmed the aerial strike on the underground compound of the mosque. 
 
"In a joint IDF and ISA activity, the IDF conducted an aerial strike on an underground terror compound in the Al-Ansar mosque in Jenin; The mosque contained a terror cell of Hamas and Islamic Jihad terror operatives who were organizing an imminent terror attack," the statement read. 
 
The statement added that the Hamas and Islamic Jihad operatives carried out several "terror attacks" in the last few months and were planning a new, "imminent" attack. 
 
"The terrorist cell also carried out a terror attack on October 14 in the area of the security fence, where an explosive device was detonated by a cellular activation of terror forces who arrived at the scene. No injuries were reported," the statement further added.

<h2>At least 13 killed in West Bank airstrikes: UN</h2>

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) stated that at least 13 Palestinians, which included five children, were reported killed in the operation carried out by Israeli security forces in a West Bank refugee camp for 28 hours. 
 
UNRWA director in the West Bank Adam Bouloukos said that the operation took place in Nur Shams. The statement further stated that the schools, solid waste collections in the camp and health services have been suspended by the UNRWA.

Israel Defense Forces chief of staff, Herzi Halevi had earlier said to IDF commanders that the military has been preparing to carry out an operation in Gaza. “We’ll enter the Gaza Strip. We’ll embark on an operational and professional task to destroy Hamas operatives and infrastructures,” said the chief. 
 
Meanwhile, IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari stated, “We will increase our strikes, minimize the risk to our troops in the next stages of the war, and we will intensify the strikes, starting from today.”

Israel steps up Gaza strikes, claims killed 'terror operatives' in Jenin mosque

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, on Saturday (Oct 21), said that the international community must sidestep an intensification of the conflict between Israel and Hamas and develop a roadmap towards the two-state solution.

She made the remarks during her address at the Cairo International Summit for Peace in the Middle East.

"Although our starting points are far apart, our interests overlap perfectly: that what is happening in Gaza does not become a much wider conflict, a religious war, a clash of civilisations," Meloni said speaking in Italian.

"I have the impression that this was the real aim of the Hamas attack, not to defend the rights of the Palestinian people, but an attack that would create an unbridgeable gap between the Palestinians and the Israelis, meaning that the target is all of us, and we cannot fall into this trap, which would be very stupid."

The Italian prime minister met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo and travelled to Tel Aviv to meet her Israeli counterpart&nbsp;Benjamin Netanyahu.

During her conversation with Abbas, the two leaders raised concerns about the need to make efforts for a de-escalation of the war between Israel and Hams and for a two-state solution, referring to the idea of establishing two separate and independent states, one for Israelis and one for Palestinians.

"I hope that there is a responsibility on the part of the whole international community, and it seems to me that there is, to speed up this process and provide a structural solution to the conflict," Meloni said.

She further emphasised that a two-state solution must have an exact timeframe.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, while addressing a Cairo summit, urged for a "humanitarian ceasefire" in the ongoing conflict demanding "action to end this godawful nightmare".

He said that the Palestinian enclave of 2.4 million people was living through "a humanitarian catastrophe" with thousands dead and more than a million displaced.&nbsp;

"We meet in the heart of a region that is reeling in pain and one step from the precipice," he told the meeting that included the leaders of Egypt, Iraq, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates as well as of Italy, Spain and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.
