What happens when the timing of a potential military offensive appears to depend as much on elections as on national security? That is the uncomfortable question confronting Washington and Tel Aviv amid fresh reports that the United States and Israel are preparing for another round of strikes against Iran. According to reporting by the Financial Times and New York Times, military preparations are underway for possible renewed attacks, with Iran's nuclear infrastructure, missile facilities and other strategic sites reportedly under consideration. But the timing is politically explosive. Israel holds parliamentary elections on October 27. The United States follows with its midterm elections on November 3. Reports suggest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sought renewed strikes earlier this month, but President Donald Trump opposed military action before the American vote. The distinction matters. Military preparations do not establish that an attack has been authorised. Nor does electoral timing, by itself, prove that either leader is manufacturing a conflict for political gain. As U.S. President Donald Trump's Iran war lingers on without any resolution, the country's military continues to suffer losses in West Asia on an unprecedented scale. According to a report, one A-10 Thunderbolt aircraft and 8 F-15 Eagle fighter jets were damaged during Iran's recent strike on Jordan.

US-IRAN WAR: The U.S. military says it has struck three Iranian oil tankers after Iranian missiles targeted two U.S. Navy warships in regional waters.

According to U.S. Central Command, an American aircraft carrier and guided-missile destroyer evaded multiple Iranian attacks, with no U.S. personnel injured. CENTCOM said two Iranian oil carriers were permanently disabled while a third unladen tanker was destroyed.

The U.S. military said the tankers were part of a shadow network allegedly helping finance Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and regional armed proxies. The strikes reportedly took place near Kharg Island, Jask and the Gulf of Oman.

The latest strikes mark another major escalation in the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, with tensions rising around Iran’s oil exports and the strategically vital Gulf region.

Iran’s Supreme Leader has called on Muslim countries, particularly the Gulf states, to unite against what he described as their “real enemy,” warning that divisions among Muslim nations only serve those seeking to weaken the region.

In a written message marking Islamic Unity Week, the Iranian leader said Muslim unity was a key foundation for building what he described as a victorious Islamic civilisation. He also urged Muslim countries to understand the plans of their adversaries and confront what he sees as common threats.

The message comes as Gulf states face growing security concerns amid the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States. Countries including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman and Qatar have longstanding security ties with Washington while simultaneously maintaining important economic and political relationships across the wider region.

Iran has issued a stark warning to countries considering joining the United States’ campaign of economic pressure against Tehran, saying nations that participate in the “economic war” will be considered enemies. The warning was issued by Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

Rezaei specifically warned neighbouring countries against cooperating with Washington’s efforts to isolate the Iranian economy. He said Iran could retaliate against countries that assist the U.S. campaign and target their interests.

The warning comes after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a major new economic campaign against Iran, with Washington preparing additional sanctions aimed at increasing pressure on Tehran.

Iran: Nations Joining the Economic War Will Be Considered Enemies

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Saturday (August 22) said Tehran had received many messages from neighbouring countries seeking new regional security arrangements and greater economic cooperation. He said the messages came as countries in the region reassessed their security concerns following the US actions. "We’ve received numerous messages from neighbouring countries about shaping new security arrangements and economic cooperation in the region," Ghalibaf wrote on X. "The United States put the security of every single one of its allies at such risk through bullying and pure disregard for their interests for the sake of Israel that they briefly saw their entire existence on the line," he said, adding, “A homegrown, independent order is what will actually deliver peace and security.”

Tensions between Iran and the United States have taken another sharp turn after U.S. President Donald Trump made remarks about the Strait of Hormuz.

Senior Iranian parliament member Ibrahim Azizi mocked Trump over his comments, warning the U.S. president to focus on his own security and referring to Trump's reported secret plane switch in Ankara as he travelled after the NATO summit.

Trump had confirmed that he switched aircraft in Ankara in July after the U.S. Secret Service and military advised him to do so because of what officials described as an imminent threat from Iran.

The controversy intensified after Trump said he would soon declare the Strait of Hormuz part of the United States. Iran strongly rejected the claim, with its foreign ministry insisting that the strategic waterway is Iranian and will remain under Iranian control.

Iran also said that decisions over the opening or closure of the Strait of Hormuz would remain under Tehran's authority.

Iran appears to be placing nationalism alongside, and at times even ahead of, its traditional Islamist approach. The war with Israel and the US made national-unity messaging a necessity. Purely theocratic mobilisation is no longer enough. The conflicts made the Islamic Republic regime realise it needed support beyond its religion-focused core base. Velayat-e faqih, the doctrine of the guardianship of the Islamic jurist, and the message of revolutionary Shiism have limited appeal among a population increasingly alienated by economic hardship, repression and compulsory hijab.
The regime is placing greater emphasis on “Iran” and national survival
A recent analysis by the Washington Institute’s Patrick Clawson noted a marked shift in the rhetoric, with references to Iran’s ancient civilisation replacing much of the usual emphasis on religious authority. Tehran recently promoted Arash the Archer, a legendary Persian figure associated with defending Iran’s borders. State media also used Achaemenid and Shahnameh imagery belonging to the pre-Islamic Revolution era alongside modern soldiers and missiles. “Ey Iran”, a patriotic song strongly associated with pre-revolutionary Iran, has been performed publicly, including at religious ceremonies. The 1979 Islamic Revolution sought to subordinate Iranian nationalism to Islam. The regime is now drawing on the very Persian identity it once treated with suspicion. Also read: Who is Parastoo Ahmadi, reportedly sentenced to 74 lashes in Iran for YouTube performance?
Iranian nationalism: A bridge between groups that rarely support the same politics
After months of regional conflict this year, different segments of Iranian society have united against the external enemies. They include secular nationalists, moderates, and even some regime critics who may oppose the Islamic Republic but still support Iran against an external attack. “Neither Gaza nor Lebanon, my life for Iran” captures this distinction: loyalty to the country does not necessarily mean loyalty to the regime.https://www.wionews.com/videos/iranian-women-defy-hijab-laws-face-challenges-entering-new-year-1766684047102/embed
Easing of the veil curbs: Adaptation to changing times?
The regime’s new approach to compulsory hijab for women is another reflection of the changing times. The hijab was made mandatory after the 1979 Revolution. But years of resistance, particularly since the 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, have made routine street enforcement of hijab increasingly difficult. Morality patrols for hijab enforcement have largely disappeared from everyday street life in major Iranian cities now. More women are appearing in public without the veil. The Hijab and Chastity law remains on the books but its implementation appears to be suspended rather than formally repealed. Human Rights Watch (HRW) noted recently that the reduced violent arrests in some cities reflect the regime’s focus on national-security priorities, rather than recognition of women’s rights.Unveiled women appearing at pro-government rallies can now be presented as symbols of national unity, while women elsewhere can still face punishment. State media has shown such unveiled women at pro-government rallies, particularly during periods of conflict. This would have been unthinkable earlier. The symbolism is significant. Uncovered hair became one of the clearest forms of opposition to the Islamic Republic. The regime now uses the same image to project national unity, provided the woman is seen supporting the state. Also read: Iran's new Hijab law imposes death penalty, fines, and imprisonment for non-compliance
Can Iranian nationalism weaken the theocracy?
If the state must invoke ancient Persia, national territory and patriotic music to unite society during war, it implicitly acknowledges that revolutionary religious ideology has only limited reach. This also reflects a shift in influence from the clerical establishment towards the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other power centres. National strength and military resilience are increasingly prominent alongside traditional clerical authority. The Islamic Republic has used nationalism before, including during the Iran-Iraq War. But the current emphasis follows years of declining religious legitimacy and widespread social resistance.Iranians opposing the Islamic Republic have also embraced “Iran” as distinct from the state. Some protesters have used the pre-1979 Lion and Sun flag and Pahlavi-era symbols, showing that nationalism can challenge the regime as easily as it can support it.
Islamism is not gone yet from Iranian identity
The clerical system, Sharia-based laws, IRGC networks, judiciary and surveillance apparatus remain largely intact. Hardliners continue to demand strict hijab enforcement and defend the revolutionary ideology. Nationalism is therefore being added to Islamism, rather than cleanly replacing it. The authorities’ nationalist campaign has not necessarily produced genuine loyalty. Many Iranians distinguish between defending Iran and supporting the Islamic Republic. The regime can relax enforcement when national unity matters, then restore pressure when political conditions change.Wartime nationalism strengthens national identity while weakening the exclusivity of the Islamist narrative. Many Iranians may rally around the country and its people without rallying around the clerical state. The Islamic Republic remains authoritarian, but its growing reliance on Persian history, national unity and Iranian identity reveals how much its original ideological monopoly has weakened.

Iran is increasingly using nationalism to unite society amid war with Israel and the US. Weaker hijab enforcement is an example of how Iranian identity is gaining ground against the regime’s Islamist narratives.

They include secular nationalists, moderates, and even some regime critics who may oppose the Islamic Republic but still support Iran against an external attack. “Neither Gaza nor Lebanon, my life for Iran” captures this distinction: loyalty to the country does not necessarily mean loyalty to the regime. https://www.wionews.com/videos/iranian-women-defy-hijab-laws-face-challenges-entering-new-year-1766684047102/embed Easing of the veil curbs: Adaptation to changing times? Human Rights Watch (HRW) noted recently that the reduced violent arrests in some cities reflect the regime’s focus on national-security priorities, rather than recognition of women’s rights. Unveiled women appearing at pro-government rallies can now be presented as symbols of national unity, while women elsewhere can still face punishment. Also read: Iran's new Hijab law imposes death penalty, fines, and imprisonment for non-compliance Can Iranian nationalism weaken the theocracy? If the state must invoke ancient Persia, national territory and patriotic music to unite society during war, it implicitly acknowledges that revolutionary religious ideology has only limited reach. This also reflects a shift in influence from the clerical establishment towards the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other power centres. National strength and military resilience are increasingly prominent alongside traditional clerical authority. The Islamic Republic has used nationalism before, including during the Iran-Iraq War. But the current emphasis follows years of declining religious legitimacy and widespread social resistance. Iranians opposing the Islamic Republic have also embraced “Iran” as distinct from the state. Some protesters have used the pre-1979 Lion and Sun flag and Pahlavi-era symbols, showing that nationalism can challenge the regime as easily as it can support it. Islamism is not gone yet from Iranian identity The clerical system, Sharia-based laws, IRGC networks, judiciary and surveillance apparatus remain largely intact. The regime can relax enforcement when national unity matters, then restore pressure when political conditions change. Wartime nationalism strengthens national identity while weakening the exclusivity of the Islamist narrative.

Iran’s nationalism is now more important than its Islamism, amid war with US and Israel. Easing of veil curbs is an example

Ukraine Threatens Iran? Flamingo Missile Post Sparks Fears Of Direct Military Conflict

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again called off planned military strikes on Iran, saying he received requests from Iran and Gulf nations to avoid further escalation.

According to Trump, the temporary understanding includes the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to Iran's nuclear threat. Reports suggest Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged Trump to de-escalate the conflict, while the U.S. and Israel had reportedly been preparing one of the largest bombing campaigns against Iran.

Meanwhile, Iran has warned that any new American attack would trigger a powerful response targeting energy infrastructure across the Gulf region. U.S. embassies throughout the Middle East have also issued security alerts amid fears of a wider regional conflict.

Truth Social has launched a premium Truth API service that offers real-time access to posts for subscribers paying as much as $100,000 per month. While premium data feeds are common across social media platforms, this service has sparked controversy because the platform's most influential user is U.S. President Donald Trump.

The subscription is reportedly aimed at high-frequency trading firms, hedge funds, financial institutions, and news organizations seeking instant access to market-moving information. Critics argue that when a sitting president's social media posts can influence stock markets, commodities, tariffs, and geopolitical developments, faster access could create an unfair financial advantage for those who can afford it.

The United States has signed a civilian nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia, a move being presented as an energy partnership but one that is raising serious strategic questions across West Asia. While Washington says the deal supports Saudi Arabia's civilian nuclear ambitions, critics warn it could reshape the regional balance of power.

The agreement has sparked concerns in Israel over nuclear proliferation, while questions remain about uranium enrichment restrictions, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) oversight, and whether the deal is linked to Saudi Arabia normalizing ties with Israel under the Abraham Accords.

The United States has reimposed its naval blockade on Iranian ports following the collapse of peace talks, but Iran's oil exports continue through a secretive network known as the "shadow fleet."

This network consists of hundreds of aging oil tankers that operate outside traditional shipping systems, helping Tehran continue its energy trade despite years of U.S. sanctions. These vessels often disable tracking systems, change identities, use foreign registrations, and conduct ship-to-ship oil transfers to hide their origins.

While Washington's sanctions target companies, banks, and shipping firms involved in Iranian crude trade, Iran has built a parallel export system that keeps its oil flowing to international buyers, especially China.

The conflict in West Asia has intensified once again as the United States launched a fresh wave of military strikes against Iran, following Tehran's missile attacks targeting American bases in Jordan. The renewed escalation comes after nearly a week-long pause in hostilities, raising fresh concerns over regional stability. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes were carried out in response to attempted Iranian attacks on US forces stationed across the region. Iran confirmed launching ballistic missiles toward US positions in Jordan, while the US said all incoming missiles were successfully intercepted.

US-Iran Conflict Escalates: Fresh Strikes, Missile Attacks and Rising West Asia Tensions

The war in West Asia is entering a dangerous new phase as the conflict spreads beyond Iran and Israel, drawing more countries into the escalating crisis. Egypt has reported a drone attack near its strategic Mediterranean port of Damietta, while the United States and Saudi Arabia have jointly launched airstrikes against Iran-backed armed groups in eastern Iraq. The latest developments come after Washington resumed military strikes on Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate with fresh attacks across the region.

According to reports, Jordan intercepted missiles fired from Iran, while Kuwait reported that an Iranian strike hit a building belonging to a Chinese company, resulting in casualties. Meanwhile, Egypt's Damietta Port, a key energy and shipping hub, was targeted in a drone attack that damaged gas-related infrastructure, raising fresh concerns over the security of global energy supply routes.

Tensions between Iran and Ukraine have escalated after Tehran condemned what it described as a Ukrainian attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea. According to Iran's Foreign Ministry, the strike caused an explosion aboard the vessel early Saturday, killing one sailor and injuring another. Iran called the incident an act of aggression and accused Ukraine of violating the United Nations Charter by extending the conflict beyond the battlefield. Tehran also urged the UN Security Council, the European Union, and the international community to condemn the alleged attack.
Iranian officials reiterated that the country has not directly participated in the Russia-Ukraine war and warned that it would defend its national interests under international law. Tehran also held Kyiv and its supporters responsible for any further escalation in regional tensions.
The issue was raised by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during a phone conversation with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian forces had carried out strikes on logistics hubs, an oil refinery, a fuel depot, and military-linked maritime assets in the Caspian Sea, including vessels allegedly used for military cargo shipments involving Iran and a Russian warship.
