The IPL 2022 mega auction is keenly awaited. The two-day affair will be held on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. Ahead of the marquee event, all eyes are on the non-retained players. A lot of big-ticket players such as David Warner, R Ashwin, Shikhar Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada, Quinton de Kock, Steve Smith, etc. will make heads turn in the forthcoming auction proceedings.

Ahead of the mega auction, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra opined on David Warner and mentioned which franchise will buy his services. As of now, there are three teams who are looking for a captain. The three franchises in search of a captain are Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS).

Chopra feels Warner's fallout with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), in IPL 2021, will be a key factor on him missing out on captaincy role despite being a proven leader and only one of the few foreign captains to have won the coveted trophy (for SRH in 2016).

Chopra said on his Youtube channel, "They can think about it but in my opinion, they will not make him the captain. I believe David Warner will not become the captain of any team although three teams are probably looking for a skipper. Even if we leave out Punjab, still two teams are looking for a captain."

"He will definitely go to some team or the other. He will go expensive as well but no team will consider him as a captain, that is what I believe because IPL is a small family, everyone has got an idea what happened last year, what were the reasons and the problems. It hasn't really gone down very well amongst the players and the franchises," he explained.

In addition, Chopra named the franchise who can attain Warner's services in the forthcoming auction. "Whether he will be there in the team, he will go somewhere for sure. He might go to RCB. It's not a bad choice that Virat Kohli on one side and David Warner on the other, left-hand and right-hand, and both explosive."

IPL 2022: Chopra explains why Warner will miss out on captaincy, names franchise who can buy him

The IPL 2022 edition is still two months away. The BCCI is planning to host the 15th edition in India, from late March. Before the upcoming season begins, all eyes are on the mega auction. It is set to be held in Bengaluru in mid-February. Before the auction proceedings, seven out of the ten teams don't have to worry about choosing a captain as they have either retained their respective skippers or named new captains.

However, the likes of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) need to choose a captain as well in the forthcoming mega auction. While Virat Kohli resigned as the RCB captain post IPL 2021, KL Rahul left PBKS and will captain the Lucknow Super Giants in the forthcoming edition. Despite taking KKR to the IPL 14 finale, Eoin Morgan wasn't retained by the two-time winners and, hence, the Kolkata-based franchise will have to look for a captain in the auction proceedings.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, former KKR captain Dinesh Karthik -- who has also registered himself in the mega auction -- named three players who can take up captaincy roles. If you go by the current international standards, Pat Cummins. He is put his name in so he obviously has an opportunity to be a captain if he goes to a franchise that believes he could be a captain."

IPL 2022 mega auction: Veteran Indian players who might go unsold

He is someone who will do really well in international cricket with the red ball. We all spoke about it after the series as well that he is going to be the next big thing in international cricket," opined Rahul.

From Rahul to Hardik: 6 players who can be picked by new teams and not enter IPL 2022 auction pool

The Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council meeting took place on Tuesday (January 11). Apart from officially approving the two new IPL teams' entry -- i.e. RPSG group's Lucknow franchise and CVC Capital-owned Ahmedabad -- into the cash-rich league, TATA Group were declared as the title sponsors after Chinese mobile manufacturer VIVO's pullout. In addition, the venue and dates for the forthcoming IPL 2022 mega auction also got confirmed.

The upcoming mega auction is set to be two-day affair and will take place in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13. The likes of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik and Krunal Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Kagiso Rabada, Rashid Khan, David Warner and many other top names haven't been retained by their respective franchises. Hence, the mega auction is keenly awaited among IPL loyalists all around the globe.

While many key decisions took place in the IPL GC meeting, nothing has been finalised when it comes to the venues for the IPL 2022 edition. The last two IPL seasons have been played largely in the UAE (with the 2020 season held entirely in UAE whereas last year's final leg also took place in the Middle East), this year's IPL season's scheduling will also test the BCCI as Covid-19 cases are on the rise in India. Thus, the board hasn't taken a call on the venues and will decide after monitoring the situation in March. The Sourav Ganguly-led board will get in touch with all the stakeholders and the government before a final call is made. At present, the third-wave scare is looming large in the country.

It is believed that if the situation doesn't improve by early March, BCCI will take a call, create a cluster to shift the tournament where there are four of five stadiums with no air travel.

ALSO READ | Governing Council approves new teams' entry into IPL, will get 10-14 days to pick players Talking about the last IPL season, it was the first-ever edition to be held in two halves. IPL 14 started in India before it was postponed indefinitely midway, in early May, due to the second wave of the Covid-19 infection. Later in the year, the tournament was shifted in the UAE where MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) returned victorious by winning their fourth title overall.

IPL 2022 mega auction in Bengaluru as dates confirmed after governing council meeting

David Warner had a horrible IPL 2021 edition. Starting the season as the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain, the swashbuckling left-hander struggles for runs -- at an ordinary strike-rate -- whereas the Orange Army's string of losses led to his sacking halfway in the season.

When IPL 14 resumed with the final leg in the UAE, Warner got only a handful of chances before his failures led to his omission. Since then, he never managed to return to the playing XI before being released by the one-time winners ahead of the mega auction for IPL 2022.

Recalling his SRH omission, Warner told while speaking to Boria Majumdar, "If you are going to drop a captain and then not pick him in the team after what he has done, what message does that send to the young kids in the team? What message does that send to the rest of the group? What hurt me the most is that the other guys are now thinking, ‘oh, this could happen to me."

“At the end of the day, whatever happens, cop it cop it on the chin. If you want to have those conversations, just have them. It’s not hard. Don’t shy away from them. I am not going to bite. I am going to sit here and accept that for what it is because you are not picking me in the team."

For the unversed, Warner was a daunting force for the SRH franchise after joining them in 2014. Since 2014, the Aussie opener amassed over 500 runs every season for the franchise before having a forgettable run in IPL 2021 (with only 195 runs in 8 games). He, however, signed off as one of the greats of SRH, with 40 half-centuries and 2 hundreds along with winning the Orange Cap thrice.

Under Warner, SRH also won their only title, so far, in 2016 edition. The Aussie cricketer will now hope to make a fresh start in IPL 2022. He might get picked by one of the two new IPL teams or else will go under the hammer during the forthcoming mega auction.

Warner is the fifth-highest run-getter in IPL history with 5,449 runs. Thus, he will surely make heads turn during the auction.

Countdown begins! IPL 2022 mega auction likely to be held on Feb 7 and 8 in Bengaluru: Report

Covid-19 pandemic is not yet over. The world has been through a lot ever since the pandemic wreaked havoc across the globe in early 2020. Just when one and all thought that they were in control of the Covid-19 crisis, another variant has emerged out of nowhere, i.e. the Omicron variant. Thus, things are again going out of hand with rising cases and panic across the globe.

In India, the cases are rising at a some pace and things are expected to get worse by early February, with many speculating a third wave by then. Hence, once again many top political gatherings, big-ticket events and sporting tournaments can get affected due to the Omicron variant. In this regard, the IPL 2022 edition can also get severely dented and, hence, the BCCI is looking to discuss Plan B with all franchises and can go ahead with conducting the mega tournament in only three cities.

Before the mega auction, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra named six players who are most likely to be picked by Lucknow and Ahmedabad. I think he is going to Lucknow and will become the captain of the new team. Rashid Khan is second in the pecking order. I don’t think his name will reach the auction table. He did not want to stay at SunRisers Hyderabad as he has been already approached by a new franchise with a better salary.

My third pick is Shreyas Iyer. He is likely to become captain of the Ahmedabad franchise. He is an important player and will be drafted to a new team. I won’t be surprised to see him lead Ahmedabad as he has already captained Delhi Capitals. Yuzvendra Chahal is another player who might go to Ahmedabad. Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya might not be a part of the auction, but Ishan Kishan’s stocks are a bit high at the moment," he opined.

Kohli, the leading run-getter in IPL history (6,283) runs, stepped down as RCB captain following the end of IPL 2021. He had already announced that the IPL 14's UAE leg will be his last as the franchise's skipper. Thus, the team management will have to name his successor sooner than later.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo about RCB's decision to retain three key campaigners on the retention day, ex-Bangalore skipper Daniel Vettori suggested that Glenn Maxwell can be Kohli's successor. "Look, I think Maxwell will be the likely heir to Kohli. He obviously produced [results] in this last year and he was an exceptional player for them. He has the experience of captaining the Melbourne Stars. We talked about most teams wanting to find a captain in their retained players. It has happened too often that teams know they've got a captain, they know they can lock that away and they don't have to find one in the auction which can cloud your thinking at times," Vettori said.

"I do believe Maxwell will be named captain. It could be [for] just one season, to see how it goes but it's a pretty good stop-gap measure as they build to the future," Vettori added.

Speaking about Kohli's stint as RCB captain, he led the side to the playoffs in 2015, 2020 and 2021 and to their third final during the 2016 season. It will be interesting to see if Maxwell is given the top job or whether the Bengaluru team management will rope in someone from the auction to be Kohli's successor.

David Warner joined the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise in 2014. Soon, he became a regular in the line-up and led the side to their solitary title in the 2016 edition. Warner remained the face of the franchise ever since but an ordinary season in the IPL 2021 edition, where he also had some issues with the team management, took things downhill and the swashbuckling left-hander hasn't been retained by the SRH franchise.

All the eight existing IPL franchises shared their list of retained players on Tuesday evening (November 30). SRH have retained only three players, such as captain Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad and pacer Umran Malik. Hence, along with Warner, the Hyderabad franchise also released the likes of Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jonny Bairstow.

The D-day is finally here. After many speculations, the cricket fans will finally get to know about the list of retained players by all existing IPL franchises ahead of the mega auction for the 2022 edition. While couple of players are surely to be retained by their respective franchises, expect some big names to enter the auction pool as all teams can only retain four players each.

As per the rules, all the eight teams can retain four players -- three Indians and a foreign player or two Indians and overseas players each -- but it isn't necessary that all the non-retained players will enter the IPL 2022 mega auction. For the unversed, the two new teams -- in the form of Lucknow and Ahmedabad -- will have an option to choose three players each from the non-retained list before the auction.

The eight IPL teams won't have the luxury to use Right To Match (RTM) cards on their non-retained players in the auction table. Hence, they will have to rebuy the players not retained, thus, it will be a tough call for all eight franchises to wisely finalise their retained list.

IPL 2022 retention ahead of mega auction: Where to live streaming in India?

The IPL 2022 edition is keenly awaited. The upcoming season will see two new teams joining the cash-rich league, in the form of Lucknow and Ahmedabad. Ahead of the next year's IPL season, the mega auction will take place -- most likely in January, 2022 -- as many marquee players will enter the auction pool whereas many youngsters will get a chance to feature in the IPL.

Ahead of the mega auction, all the eight existing franchises have to share their list of retained players, maximum by November 30 (Tuesday). As per the rules, each franchise can retain a maximum of four players -- three Indians and one foreign player of two Indian and overseas players each. Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan shared his list of four players who are likely to be retained by the one-time winners Rajasthan Royals (RR).

Pathan told Star Sports, "Sanju Samson for sure, second number will be Jos Buttler because he's been in fantastic form, one of the best hitters going around especially if you are talking about white ball cricket, so you don't want to miss out on that wicket-keeper batsman, who can bat up the order and down the order as well.

"The other guy, people might be tempted for Ben Stokes because he's a wonderful all-rounder, but I think I would put Jofra Archer in the same category as Jasprith Bumrah because you don't find many bowlers like that. So, I definitely would like Rajasthan Royals to retain Jofra Archer, and the fourth one, I am very tempted for Yashasvi Jaiswal because he's a young guy, who’s shown a lot of potential, and he could be the guy you could invest in.”

For the unversed, a report in ESPNcrinfo had recently suggested that RR have retained their skipper Samson for a whopping price. It remains to be seen how many players will the one-time champions retain ahead of the mega auction.

If Pathan's prediction comes true for RR, Ben Stokes might enter the auction pool and grab a mammoth deal by either of the two new teams or from the existing franchises. Meanwhile, many other players such as KL Rahul, David Warner, Pandya brothers, Suryakumar Yadav, etc. are expected to make heads turn in the IPL 2022 auction (if not retained by their current franchises).

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be looking to bring the Indian Premier League (IPL) back to India after hosting the second leg of the 14th edition successfully in UAE this year. Due to COVID-19, the last couple of editions of the IPL have been played outside the country. While the complete tournament from start to end was hosted in the UAE last year, IPL 2021 kicked off in India earlier this year before it had to be shifted to the UAE due to COVID-19.

It was the first edition of IPL which was played across two legs in two different countries. India was hit by the second wave of COVID-19 while the tournament's first leg was underway in the country. Players from several teams contracted the infection which led to the postponement of the tournament before it was moved to the UAE where the second leg was concluded on October 15 with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) becoming the champions after beating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly was recently asked during the launch of the T20 World Cup campaign for My11Circle whether the IPL will return to India next year. The BCCI chief said he was hopeful of the board staging the tournament in front of packed stadiums in India in 2022 as the COVID-19 situation in the country is under control at present.

"I hope so, because it's India's tournament. As much as you see the superb atmosphere in Dubai, it's different in India. It's absolutely madness in India with the stands full. We'd love to have it back in India. I'm sure in the next seven-eight months, the COVID-19 situation will be very different, and we can host it in India with packed stands and the supporters pouring," said Ganguly, who was in Dubai to attend the IPL 2021 final between CSK and KKR on Friday.
