Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane admitted that the Eden Gardens pitch played differently than usual in their IPL 2025 opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Traditionally known to assist spinners, the surface offered little turn, affecting KKR’s spin-heavy bowling attack in their seven-wicket defeat.
Rahane attributed the change in conditions to persistent rain, which kept the wicket under covers for nearly two days. This led to early moisture, favoring RCB’s fast bowlers, particularly Josh Hazlewood, who made full use of the conditions.

"We would love to see a pitch that helps spin bowlers, but this wicket was under covers for the last one and a half days," Rahane said in the post-match press conference. "There was some moisture when we started our batting, and Hazlewood used the conditions really well."

'Pitch played different due to rain'

KKR’s spin duo, Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, struggled to extract their usual turn. Chakravarthy, coming off a strong Champions Trophy campaign, conceded 43 runs in four overs, while Narine finished with 1 for 27. Their combined two wickets were a stark contrast to their usual impact.
Despite the setback, Rahane backed his spinners. "No complaints. Both our spinners are of great quality; they can bowl on any kind of wicket. I'm sure they are confident as well, but yes, the pitch played differently because of the rain," he added.
Chasing 175, RCB openers Phil Salt and Virat Kohli (59*) gave a flying start, taking their side to 80/0 in the powerplay. Salt’s explosive hitting dismantled Chakravarthy in the fourth over, hammering 21 runs.
Though KKR managed breakthroughs later, the damage was done. Salt fell after scoring a quick-fire fifty, while Devdutt Padikkal (19) was caught off Narine. Kohli, staying true to his "chase master' reputation, reached his half-century in style with a lofted boundary over covers.
RCB skipper Rajat Patidar (34) played a quick cameo before losing his wicket to Vaibhav Arora. Liam Livingstone (15*) finished the chase with a flourish, sealing a seven-wicket win.
KKR will look to bounce back when they face Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on Wednesday (March 26).

IPL 2025: Rahane calls for spin-friendly pitch at Eden Gardens after KKR’s loss to RCB

The highly anticipated 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has begun, bringing with it thrilling cricketing action, record-breaking performances, and edge-of-the-seat entertainment. In the opening match, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) delivered a dominating win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), setting the stage for an exhilarating tournament. Following the match, cricketing legends and JioStar experts Sunil Gavaskar and Matthew Hayden provided in-depth analysis exclusively on JioHotstar, dissecting key performances and strategic takeaways.
Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar praised the performances of Rajat Patidar and Virat Kohli, emphasising their strong rapport. He said, “Rajat Patidar has spent considerable time playing under Virat Kohli, which has helped him settle in seamlessly. Kohli’s presence gave him confidence, and Patidar responded with an outstanding knock. The way he stroked the ball and made it look effortless was commendable."
"Additionally, RCB’s ability to restrict KKR from what seemed like a 200-210 total to just 175 was crucial. Rajat Patidar’s captaincy was impressive—his bowling changes were spot on, and his performance as a batter was equally impactful," he added.

Gavaskar also highlighted the evolving aggressive approach of IPL batters. “Players are becoming more adventurous, understanding the importance of capitalizing on the powerplay. With only two fielders outside the inner circle, teams must aim for 10-12 runs per over in the first six overs, targeting 60-75 runs even at the cost of one wicket. This provides a strong foundation to push for totals around 180-200, he said.

'Kohli's partnership with Salt was key'

Meanwhile, Matthew Hayden analysed Virat Kohli’s performance while chasing. The former Australia opener said, “This was the ideal total for Virat Kohli to chase. He thrives in scenarios where the target is around par or slightly above. His strike rate, particularly in the middle overs, was exceptional—maintaining over 170, which was exactly what was required."
"His partnership with Phil Salt was also key, as Salt’s role in increasing the scoring rate complemented Kohli’s approach. We’re witnessing ‘Virat Kohli 2.0’—he remains dominant in powerplays but has now enhanced his effectiveness in the middle overs as well," he added.
Hayden further stressed the significance of net run rate in the IPL. “Every season, net run rate plays a critical role. Last year, RCB had to make a late surge, and net run rate proved decisive. This season, too, it will be a crucial factor in the playoff race.”
The Australian also discussed the influence of Krunal Pandya. “Krunal Pandya was a brilliant selection. His variations, change of pace, and ability to attack the stumps made a significant impact. Experience is invaluable in high-pressure situations, and he demonstrated great composure. At one stage, RCB seemed to be struggling, but their resilience and comeback were remarkable.”

The video of the incident has been widely shared across various platforms, with many praising Kohli’s calm demeanor and others questioning the stadium’s security measures.
The breach raised concerns about safety protocols at high-profile cricket matches, especially in packed venues like Eden Gardens. The IPL authorities and stadium officials are expected to review security arrangements to prevent such incidents in the future.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) all-rounder Krunal Pandya shared his thought process behind delivering an unexpected bouncer to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batter Venkatesh Iyer during the opening match of Indian Premier League 2025.
In the 12th over of KKR’s innings, Venkatesh walked to the crease without wearing a helmet. Sensing an opportunity, Krunal bowled a sharp bouncer. However, Venkatesh read it early and avoided any trouble. The very next ball, now with his helmet on, the southpaw attempted a wristy shot but ended up dragging the ball onto his stumps.
Speaking about his strategy in the post-match presentation, Krunal said, "Whether it's a wide yorker or a bouncer, if you have something in your arsenal, why not use it?"

Krunal’s brilliance wasn’t limited to that one dismissal. Earlier, he claimed the crucial wicket of KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane, who was in destructive form, striking boundaries with ease. Rahane, on 56 off 31 balls, miscued a shot straight into the hands of Rasikh Salam, courtesy of Krunal’s well-crafted plan.
The left-arm spinner wrapped up his spell with another key scalp, clean bowling Rinku Singh with a quicker delivery that skidded past the batter’s attempted pull shot. Finishing with figures of 3/29, Krunal was named Player of the Match for his match-winning performance.

'My focus is on bowling quicker'

Reflecting on his approach, he emphasised the importance of adaptability in modern cricket. "When you play in front of such a big crowd, you have to narrow your focus. If I get hit, it should be off a good ball. Batters today have the skill to hit sixes consistently, so as a bowler, you need to evolve. That’s why I focus on bowling quicker and using variations. Change of pace isn’t just for pacers; I try it too," he explained.
Krunal, who was acquired by RCB from Lucknow Super Giants for $66 million in the mega auction, also spoke about his short but thrilling stint with the franchise so far: "It’s been amazing. The energy around RCB is unreal. Even in domestic cricket, you hear fans chanting ‘RCB.’ It’s been just 10 days since I joined, and I’m loving it."
Thanks to Krunal’s stellar bowling, KKR managed only 174/8. In response, RCB’s opening duo of Virat Kohli and Philip Salt set the stage for an easy chase, stitching together a commanding 95-run partnership.

His phenomenal 2016 season, where he scored 973 runs with four centuries, remains unmatched, though an IPL title has eluded him.
The match also marked Kohli’s 400th appearance in T20 cricket. Before the felicitation, he delighted fans by dancing with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Shah Rukh welcomed Kohli on stage with an electrifying introduction: "The King of 22 yards and a billion hearts. Let's hear it for the GOAT, Virat Kohli."

IPL 2025: 'Learning from the best', RCB captain applauds Virat Kohli’s unbeaten fifty in curtain-raiser

In a disappointing start to their Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) suffered a 7-wicket defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens. Captain Ajinkya Rahane pointed to a crucial moment in the first innings that shifted the game’s momentum away from the defending champions.
After being put in to bat, KKR struggled early against Josh Hazlewood’s sharp bowling. However, Rahane and Sunil Narine counterattacked, propelling the team to a promising 107/1 in 9.5 overs. Just when KKR seemed poised for a big total, RCB struck back. Rasikh Salam dismissed Narine for 44, opening the floodgates. Krunal Pandya then inflicted further damage, removing key batters in quick succession, leaving KKR stumbling at 145/5.

Rahane reflected on this phase as the moment that derailed their innings. “We were going well till the 13th over, but those 2-3 quick wickets completely changed the momentum. Venky (Venkatesh Iyer) and I believed 200-210 was possible, but after those dismissals, we couldn't recover,” Rahane said in the post-match presentation.

Rahane optimistic

KKR eventually managed only 174/8, a total that proved insufficient against RCB’s explosive batting. Openers Philip Salt and Virat Kohli dismantled KKR’s bowling attack, putting on a 95-run stand that silenced the Eden Gardens crowd and shifted the chants in RCB’s favor. With a commanding chase, RCB cruised to victory with seven wickets in hand.
Despite the loss, Rahane remained optimistic about improving in key areas. “We don’t want to dwell too much on this game, but we’ll look to get better in certain aspects,” he added.
As KKR regroups for the next match, addressing their mid-innings collapse and bowling vulnerabilities will be crucial in bouncing back from this setback.

(With inputs from agencies)

IPL 2025: KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane pinpoints game-changing moment in defeat against RCB

Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has thrown his weight behind Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as his favorites to lift the Indian Premier League 2025 trophy. However, the World Cup-winning cricketer made it clear that his preference has nothing to do with his mentorship of Abhishek Sharma, one of SRH’s most promising young stars.
Yuvraj, who has been closely working with Abhishek Sharma, has seen the youngster develop into a powerful top-order batter for SRH. In IPL 2024, Abhishek stunned everyone with his 63 off just 23 balls against Mumbai Indians (MI), playing a crucial role in SRH's record-breaking 277/3 total—the highest-ever in IPL history.
Speaking exclusively to WION, the former Indian cricketer said, "SRH looks a well-balanced team. They have enough firepower to life the coveted IPL trophy this season. I am not saying this because I am biased towards Abhishek, but they really are a strong team."

Despite his evident connection with Abhishek, Yuvraj was quick to clarify that his backing of SRH is based purely on the team's overall strength, balance, and performance, not personal bias. He believes that under the leadership of Pat Cummins, SRH has all the ingredients to go all the way this season.
In a lighthearted moment after Abhishek’s stunning knock, Yuvraj praised the youngster's innings but jokingly pointed out his mistake while playing the short ball that led to his dismissal. This showed the high expectations the former cricketer has for his protege.

Yuvi's love for RCB

While SRH remains his top pick, Yuvraj also expressed his admiration for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), saying that he would love to see them go all the way. RCB, a team with a massive fanbase and star players like Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell, has been chasing their elusive maiden IPL title for years.
By supporting both SRH and RCB, Yuvraj has set up an interesting narrative for the IPL season. Will SRH capitalise on their explosive batting lineup, or will RCB finally break their trophy drought? With Yuvraj’s endorsement, all eyes will be on these two franchises as they battle for the IPL 2024 crown.
With high expectations and intense competition, IPL 2024 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting seasons yet. Whether SRH lives up to Yuvraj’s prediction or RCB fulfills the dreams of their loyal fans, one thing is certain—this tournament is going to be a thriller!

What happens when your landlord is more obsessed with IPL than rent payments? Welcome to DC PG by Gulati, where veteran actor Rajesh Sharma plays Gulati, a die-hard Delhi Capitals fan who only allows fellow DC supporters to stay in his PG. But when non-DC fans sneak in, the real IPL drama begins—off the field!
In an exclusive conversation with WION, Rajesh Sharma shared his excitement about the role, revealing that despite his character's cricket obsession, he was actually a football captain in school and never played cricket. "The excitement was that I had to play cricket for the role," he said. "Cricket in India is like a religion, and if I can connect with people through the right emotion, it takes this religion to a different level."

Though he doesn’t follow IPL closely, Sharma enjoys discussing the matches with friends. "I like 2-3 teams—Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, and Punjab Kings," he admitted.
On his experience filming the series, Sharma praised the fresh and hardworking team. "The script, written by Panky, was full of natural humor, so I didn’t have to improvise much. Everyone on the crew was so involved. That's what made the work fun and easy going."
A self-proclaimed foodie, Sharma couldn’t stop raving about Delhi’s street food. "There’s a guy at CP who sells gajar ka halwa. I would take a 10-minute break from the shoot just to eat it!"
When asked which IPL team he would allow into his character's PG, Sharma was clear: "I would allow everyone. Cricket is about inclusivity."
He also spoke about the challenges of comedy in acting. "Comedy is hard because the person making others laugh is often serious inside. It’s about balancing heart and mind, like Bertolt Brecht's theory—don’t just flow with emotions, but work with awareness."
As Delhi Capitals engage their fans with their new mini-web series, they will be keen to start their campaign on a positive note when they face Lucknow Super Giants in the opening match of IPL 2025 on Monday (March 24).

SRK arrived in Kolkata on Friday (March 21) evening to attend the grand IPL 2025 opening ceremony at Eden Gardens. Dressed in a white T-shirt and denim jeans, he made a stylish entrance, greeting his fans at the airport with waves and flying kisses.
The match between KKR and RCB revives memories of the IPL 2008 opener, where Brendon McCullum’s historic 158-run knock set the tournament alight. IPL 2025 | King Khan’s Pep Talk to KKR: God Bless You, be healthy and play well

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) enters its 18th season, the brand continues to grow stronger, facing no significant threats from the increasing number of global T20 leagues, according to IPL chairman Arun Dhumal. Dhumal dismissed speculation regarding a Saudi-backed cricket event, emphasising that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) supports the expansion of T20 leagues, particularly in emerging markets such as Saudi Arabia, Europe, and the USA. He believes this growth will ultimately benefit the sport, especially ahead of cricket’s return to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
"There is no point discussing speculation. As far as I know, there is no infrastructure in Saudi Arabia to host a tournament of this scale," Dhumal was quoted saying to PTI. While there has been much media chatter about Saudi Arabia's potential entry into cricket, nothing concrete has materialized. However, the country has been involved with the IPL as a sponsor and even hosted the mega auction last year.

Recent reports suggest Saudi Arabia is planning a tennis Grand Slam-style cricket league, but no official details have emerged.

IPL ranks second globally in per-match value

The IPL is currently valued at over $12 billion and ranks second globally in per-match value, trailing only the National Football League (NFL) in the United States. With such a dominant position, no other cricket league poses a direct challenge to the IPL. In fact, IPL franchise owners are expanding their reach by investing in foreign leagues such as the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), SA20, Major League Cricket (MLC), International League T20 (ILT20), and most recently, The Hundred in the UK.
"The goal of bringing cricket to the Olympics is to ensure its global growth. More leagues mean more opportunities, and we don’t see anyone as a threat," Dhumal said. "We encourage cricket's expansion into newer territories like Saudi Arabia, America, and Europe. Our focus remains on strengthening the IPL."
Regarding England star Harry Brook’s recent two-year ban for withdrawing from his contract with Delhi Capitals, Dhumal defended the decision, emphasising its importance in maintaining the integrity of the auction process. "Franchises strategize their squads around auction picks. If a player withdraws without a valid reason, it disrupts team planning and affects the tournament," he explained. The two-year suspension includes the season the player pulled out from.
Dhumal also addressed the Impact Player Rule, which has sparked mixed reactions. "The feedback from fans and broadcasters has been overwhelmingly positive, and it has elevated the standard of play. That’s why we’ve extended it until 2027," he said. He dismissed concerns about the rule hindering the development of Indian all-rounders, asserting that IPL has raised the benchmark for all players, and the same will happen for all-rounders over time.
Among other changes, the IPL has lifted the five-year-old ban on saliva use and introduced new technologies to improve fairness. "We consulted captains, and they felt lifting the saliva ban would provide some relief to bowlers in a batsman-dominated format," said Dhumal. Additionally, Decision Review System (DRS) will now apply to height and off-stump wides, and a second ball will be introduced in the second innings to counter dew.
To rival the NFL, NBA, and English Premier League, the IPL needs a larger window beyond its current two-month slot. However, with bilateral series and ICC events dominating the calendar until at least 2031, increasing the IPL’s duration remains a challenge.
"Whenever a larger window becomes available, we would like to extend the tournament," Dhumal said. "Players don’t want to miss IPL, and a longer season benefits everyone."
Ultimately, innovation remains key to IPL’s continued success. "The fan experience is at the heart of any sport," Dhumal emphasised. "Our goal is to reinforce IPL’s position as the world’s premier sporting league. Consistently breaking viewership records in India, along with rising global interest in the UK, USA, Australia, Malaysia, and the Middle East, reflects our efforts.
With club cricket on the rise and many leagues following IPL’s model, the IPL must continue leading the way for others to follow."

IPL 2025 | Lucknow Super Giants trolled as 'worst IPL franchise' over viral social media clip

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) kick off their IPL 2025 campaign on the road, starting in Kolkata before heading to Chennai—two venues known for their spin-friendly conditions. For RCB to have a successful season, their spinners will need to step up. But do they have the firepower to make an impact?
In Krunal Pandya, RCB boasts an experienced left-arm orthodox spinner. However, with an IPL economy of 7.36 and an average of 34.28, he is classified as a defensive bowler. While such a role has its advantages—especially at the batting-friendly M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where RCB plays seven home games—his selection at $66 million was more about value than dominance.
Beyond Krunal, RCB's spin attack appears untested. Wristspinner Suyash Sharma remains an IPL rookie, his understudy Mohit Rathee is relatively unknown, and Liam Livingstone is a part-time option. Swapnil Singh delivered a steady performance last season, and Jacob Bethell may contribute, but overall, RCB's spin unit seems to lack bite compared to other teams.

Head coach Andy Flower acknowledged the concerns but expressed confidence in the combination of Krunal’s experience, the wristspinners’ potential, and Livingstone’s versatility.
"It's a valid question to ask," Flower admitted ahead of RCB’s season opener at Eden Gardens. "Krunal was a key target in the auction. He’s a smart, courageous cricketer with leadership experience. Having his nous and class as a left-arm spinner is reassuring for us."
Suyash has played only 13 IPL games in two seasons, with limited chances in 2024 after a promising debut in 2023. At Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), he had the luxury of learning from experienced spinners like Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy. Now, at RCB, he takes the lead. Flower emphasized the need for patience.
"Suyash is an exciting young talent with a high ceiling but limited experience," Flower noted. "We're hoping for great things, but we also understand he won't be a Shane Warne overnight. He recently underwent groin surgery, which has gone well, and he’s had excellent rehab under RCB's care."
Supporting the spin department, Swapnil Singh’s steady performances from last season and Livingstone’s ability to bowl a few overs add depth. "Having Livingstone as backup is a nice insurance policy," Flower added. "We’re comfortable with our spin attack."

'Experienced bowlers bring confidence'

While spin remains a question mark, RCB’s fast-bowling unit looks promising. The presence of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Josh Hazlewood, Yash Dayal, Lungi Ngidi, Nuwan Thushara, and Rasikh Salam provides a mix of experience and form. Flower believes this balance will relieve pressure on new captain Rajat Patidar.
"Experienced bowlers bring confidence," Flower explained. "Hazlewood, Bhuvi, Yash, and Krunal all have leadership qualities. Even Yash, despite being young, has a calm, tactical mindset. These guys can almost captain themselves when it comes to decision-making."
Starting their season against tough opponents, RCB sees the challenge as an opportunity. When asked if facing defending champions KKR first was daunting, Flower responded with confidence:
"Yes, it’s daunting—for KKR! I hope it turns into an El Clásico of IPL. That would be a fantastic way to kick off IPL 2025."

When asked if facing defending champions KKR first was daunting, Flower responded with confidence: "Yes, it’s daunting—for KKR! I hope it turns into an El Clásico of IPL. That would be a fantastic way to kick off IPL 2025."

IPL 2025 | Head coach Andy Flower confident, but can RCB’s spinners silence the critics?

The highly anticipated IPL 2025 season opener between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) faces a major hurdle as rain threatens to disrupt the match. Fans are eagerly waiting to see their favorite stars in action, but will the weather play spoilsport? Stay tuned for the latest updates!

Rain threat looms Kolkata vs Bengaluru season opener

As Virat Kohli steps onto the field for the Indian PremierLeague (IPL) 2025 opener against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens, he will mark a historic milestone—his 400th T20 match. This feat makes him only the third Indian cricketer to achieve this milestone, after Rohit Sharma (448 matches) and Dinesh Karthik (412 matches).
Since making his T20 debut in 2008, Kohli has made 12,886 runs in 382 innings at an average of 41.43, with nine centuries and 97 fifties. He is not only India’s highest run-scorer in T20s but also the sixth-highest globally.

However, this IPL season presents a new challenge. Having retired from T20Is last year after leading India to a World Cup victory with a match-winning knock in the final, Kohli now faces fresh scrutiny. His strike rate, adaptability against spin, and shot selection will be analysed as the T20 format continues evolving with more aggressive playstyles.

A fresh approach in 2025?

Kohli’s hunt for an IPL title remains one of cricket’s most compelling narratives. With 8,004 runs in 252 matches, including eight centuries and a record 973-run season in 2016, individual brilliance has yet to translate into championship success. This season, Kohli might look to re-invent his approach, taking more risks and adding a touch of unpredictability to his game.
His opening partner will also be different this time. Over the years, Kohli has shared the crease with Chris Gayle, Devdutt Padikkal, and Faf du Plessis. In 2025, he will pair up with England’s explosive batter Phil Salt, a key figure in KKR’s title-winning run last year. The two have already struck a good rapport, as seen in a recent RCB video where Salt described Kohli as a "chilled" and competitive character.

The spin test: Kohli vs Chakravarthy & Narine

One of the most talked-about aspects of Kohli’s T20 game has been his approach against spinners. Facing Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, two of KKR’s most lethal weapons, will be a key test in the opening match.
Against Varun: Kohli has scored 40 runs off 39 balls (SR: 102.56), with just one dismissal. Against Narine: He has managed 162 runs in 157 balls (SR: 103.18), with four dismissals.
However, there were signs of evolution in IPL 2024. Kohli struck at 137.08 against spin, a significant improvement from his 113.38 in 2023 and 108 in 2022. His 15 sixes against spinners last season were the highest he had ever hit in an IPL campaign.
As the 2025 IPL unfolds, will we see a more adventurous Kohli against spin? Will he finally break the IPL title curse? As always, with Kohli, the season promises drama, intensity, and perhaps a few surprises.

IPL 2025 | Virat Kohli’s 400th T20: New beginnings, old challenges, and hunt for glory

The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders facing Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the opening match. The captains' meeting has confirmed key rule changes for IPL 2025, adding new excitement to the tournament. Watch this report to know what's new in this IPL season!

Kolkata face Bengaluru in opening match of Indian Premier League

The Indian Premier League is back, and with it comes the excitement, drama, and high-stakes battles that fans eagerly anticipate each year. However, for Rajasthan Royals, this season carries a tinge of loss.
The departure of Jos Buttler, one of their most celebrated players, to Gujarat Titans has left a void that won’t be easy to fill. Over the years, Buttler wasn’t just a key player for Rajasthan; he was the heartbeat of their batting lineup, a mentor to younger players, and a trusted ally of skipper Sanju Samson. His absence raises an important question: will Rajasthan Royals miss him in IPL 2025? The answer is a resounding yes.
Buttler’s impact on Rajasthan Royals went far beyond the runs he scored. He was a match-winner, a leader on the field, and a player who could single-handedly turn games in Rajasthan’s favor. His record speaks for itself—over 3,000 runs for the franchise, including a phenomenal 2022 season where he won the Orange Cap with 863 runs and led RR to the final. But it wasn’t just about the numbers.
Buttler had the ability to take on the best bowlers in the world, provide explosive starts, and adapt to different match situations. Rajasthan relied heavily on him at the top of the order, and his presence often set the tone for their innings. Now, without him, the team will have to rethink its approach.

One of the biggest voids left by Buttler’s departure is his bond with captain Sanju Samson. The duo shared a special partnership both on and off the field. They complemented each other’s batting styles, with Samson often playing the anchor while Buttler took on the role of aggressor. Their mutual trust and understanding made Rajasthan’s batting lineup more formidable.

Time for Sanju to step up

Samson himself admitted that releasing Buttler was one of the hardest decisions he had to make, showing just how much the Englishman meant to the franchise. With Buttler gone, the responsibility on Samson’s shoulders has increased significantly, and he will have to take on an even greater leadership role this season.
Rajasthan Royals still have a talented squad, but there’s no denying that Buttler’s absence will be felt. Yashasvi Jaiswal, one of the brightest young talents in Indian cricket, is expected to step up and fill the void at the top. Shimron Hetmyer remains a crucial middle-order finisher, while emerging players like Dhruv Jurel and Riyan Parag have an opportunity to make a bigger impact. However, replacing a player of Buttler’s caliber is never easy. His experience, consistency, and ability to perform under pressure made him irreplaceable.
Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans will be thrilled to have secured Buttler’s services. The 2022 champions, who have been one of the most consistent teams in recent years, now have a player who can change the course of a match within a few overs. His presence not only strengthens their batting but also gives them a leader with immense IPL experience. Rajasthan’s loss is certainly Gujarat’s gain, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Buttler plays a crucial role in their campaign this season.
For Rajasthan, this IPL will be about finding a new identity without one of their biggest stars. They have a strong core and a captain in Samson who has proven his leadership capabilities, but whether they can succeed without Buttler remains to be seen. One thing is certain—when Rajasthan Royals take the field in IPL 2025, there will be a noticeable absence at the top of the order, and fans will be left wondering what could have been if Buttler was still donning the pink jersey.

England all-rounder Sam Curran recently shared his experience of spending time with legendary cricketer MS Dhoni, highlighting his stress-free and approachable nature. Speaking to former England captain Nasser Hussain on the Sky Cricket Podcast, Curran described how Dhoni’s aura continues to captivate players and fans alike.
Recalling a memorable moment, Curran said, “The other night, I was batting with MS and Jadeja (Ravindra Jadeja) at 11:30 in the evening, just smacking balls everywhere under the lights. I thought, where else in the world would you do this? All the local players just sit and watch MS. His calmness, the big moments he has been involved in—he never seems to panic. He never really shows too much emotion.”

Due to his immense popularity, stepping out in public often leads to him getting mobbed by fans.
As CSK prepares to begin their IPL campaign against Mumbai Indians at Chepauk Stadium, Dhoni is set to play another season, chasing his sixth title under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad. While speculation continues about whether this will be his final IPL season, CSK retained him as an uncapped player for ₹4 crore under the IPL's revised retention rules.
Since retiring from international cricket in 2020, Dhoni has only featured in the IPL. In the 2024 season, he played 11 innings, scoring 161 runs at a staggering strike rate of 220 and an average of 53.66, often finishing games for CSK. Across his IPL career, he has amassed 5,243 runs in 264 matches, with a strike rate of 137.53 and 24 half-centuries, cementing his status as one of the tournament’s greatest players.

IPL 2025 | 'CSK vs MI is like India-Pakistan of IPL', says former India spinner Harbhajan Singh

With just days remaining for the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) season, defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are all set to defend their crown. Led by Ajinkya Rahane KKR will open its campaign against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as they host them at the Eden Gardens. However, the new-looking design of the franchise’s kit has attracted its fan base as we decode the fascinating story behind it.

Speaking exclusively to WION’s Aditya Pimpale was Avni Aneja, co-founder of SIX5SIX who are the official kits manufacturers of KKR in IPL 2025. SIX5SIX is a leading brand in the Indian sports market giving tough fights to international kit manufacturers Nike, Adidas and others.

Question: How did the collaboration with Kolkata Knight Riders start?

So, SIX5SIX has been around for about say six years. We've done quite a few sports till now and it's been football primarily. Then we've done table tennis, we've manufactured kits for a bunch of other teams and sports as well.
Cricket is something that we got into fairly recently when we stepped foot in it a couple of years ago. There's not a bigger property than IPL in this country at all. So that was always our target. We started with another IPL team last year when we collaborated with Lucknow Super Giants. So I would say that’s where the base was for our recent collaboration with KKR as we built a brand in the last couple of years.

Question: How did your adventure with SIX5SIX start?

Primarily, SIX5SIX is a sportswear and streetwear brand and the primary focus at this point is obviously sports. I and my co-founder who is also my brother Ambar, have been sports people all our lives. So this was a culture inculcated by my parents. We played a bunch of sports I played state-level basketball. My brother actually played state-level U-16 cricket when he was in school and college so we were always connected to sports.

Question: How was your experience working with KKR while designing the new kit?

I feel like what we as a brand have done in the last few years with all of the sports and now that we moved into cricket is that our philosophy is design first. What we do is put our heart and soul into making a jersey come alive not just for the players but also for the fans because I feel like that connection is very important as someone who's also wearing the jersey or someone who's supporting the person wearing the jersey.
So our philosophy has always been very of course, associating ourselves with a legacy like KKR, made the design process so much easier because we had quite a bit of freedom in terms of what we wanted to design and two. After all, they had such a rich history and heritage and obviously, the most obvious one at this point was because like you said they were defending champions last year.

After a disappointing campaign last year, Pandya is looking forward to the support and guidance available within the squad.
Returning to MI last season after leading Gujarat Titans for two years, Pandya acknowledged the wealth of experience surrounding him.
"I am fortunate to have three captains playing alongside me. Their experience adds immense value. I know that I have three different minds who have led India in various formats and possess years of leadership experience. They can always support me, guide me, and put an arm around my shoulder when needed," Pandya said at a press conference.

Pandya's suspension stems from a slow over-rate offense in MI’s last match of IPL 2024 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). This was his third such offense in the league, resulting in a one-match ban and a $35,000 fine.
Speaking at the press conference, Pandya admitted that the delay in the final over was unintentional but unavoidable at times.
"That is out of my control. Last year, the last over was delayed by a minute and a half or two. At that moment, I didn’t realize the consequences," he said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Despite his absence, Pandya expressed confidence in Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership. "It’s unfortunate, but I have to accept the rules. Whether this regulation continues next season is up to the authorities. In my absence, Surya is the ideal choice to lead. He already captains India in T20Is, so he’s well-equipped for the role," Pandya concluded.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering revoking the long-standing ban on using saliva to shine the ball in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The final call, however, may rest with team captains.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) had initially imposed the saliva ban in 2020 as a temporary measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19. However, in 2022, the ICC made the ban permanent, stating that players had already adapted to the new norm of maintaining the ball without saliva.

Despite this, the BCCI is now reassessing the rule for the IPL. Shining the ball using saliva has been a long-standing practice in cricket, helping bowlers generate swing. However, with the global pandemic changing how the game is played, players have had to rely on alternative methods such as sweat to maintain the ball's condition.
If the BCCI decides to overturn the saliva ban in the IPL, it could mark a significant shift in cricket regulations, potentially influencing the ICC to reconsider its stance as well.
Earlier, India pacer Mohammed Shami voiced concerns about the lasting impact of the ICC’s saliva ban, which was made permanent in 2022 after being initially introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sports careers can take fascinating turns, and Tanmay Srivastava’s journey is a testament to that. While Virat Kohli, who led India to victory in the 2008 ICC U19 World Cup, went on to become one of the finest batters in cricket history, many of his teammates from that squad did not find the same level of success in their playing careers. According to a report in the Times of India, Tanmay, now 35, has secured an umpiring role in the IPL. Interestingly, he was India's highest run-scorer in the final of the 2008 U19 World Cup. His early promise earned him a contract with Punjab Kings, but his playing career did not take off as expected.
"I realised that was the best player I could be," Tanmay was quoted saying to TOI. "I was nowhere close to playing in the IPL. I had to decide whether to prolong my playing career or start a longer, more successful second innings."

In the high-stakes world of T20 cricket, young talents emerge from the shadows, leaving fans and pundits in awe. One such rising star is Tristan Stubbs, the South African all-rounder who has been making waves with his explosive batting and confident gameplay. As he gears up for the upcoming Indian Premier League season, expectations are high, and the excitement surrounding his performances continues to grow.
During a recent interaction, Stubbs, who plays for the Delhi Capitals franchise, was pleasantly surprised to learn that none other than AB de Villiers had praised him as one of the most wonderful all-rounders and an exciting player to watch. "I never knew that," he admitted with a smile. "It's pretty cool to hear, and hopefully, I can try to be even half of what he was one day." However, rather than seeing such praise as added pressure, Stubbs takes it as a confidence boost, focusing on his growth as a player.
The past year has been transformative for the young cricketer. From fine-tuning his mental approach to refining his decision-making under pressure, Stubbs has matured significantly. "I was doing some not-so-smart things out in the middle, but I figured out how to control my emotions when the pressure is on," he reflected. "Now, it's all about learning and applying it in big moments."
As an overseas player in the IPL, adapting to Indian conditions is crucial. Stubbs acknowledges the challenges, particularly the spin-friendly pitches. "You need a Plan B and even a Plan C because Plan A might not work on a given day," he explained. He also highlighted his experience sharing a dressing room with Rohit Sharma, learning from the Mumbai Indians captain's calm demeanor and strategic mindset.
With the Delhi Capitals eyeing their maiden IPL title, Stubbs believes that under the leadership of Axar Patel, the team has the right energy and talent to make a serious impact. "Having Axar in the team is a huge bonus. He makes the bowlers feel calm, and his confidence rubs off on the rest of us. Hopefully, we can feed off that energy and go all the way."

'Enjoy range hitting in practice'

Despite his reputation as a big hitter, Stubbs remains a student of the game, constantly working on his technique and approach. "I enjoy range hitting in practice, just to see the ball go over the ropes and find my swing," he shared. His preparation also includes gaining insights from experienced mentors like Mike Schmidt, his coach from school days, whom he still consults regularly.
As he sets his sights on the IPL, Stubbs knows that challenges lie ahead. Whether facing world-class spinners or handling the pressure of high-scoring chases, he remains committed to his craft. "Sometimes, when you need 12 an over, it feels impossible. But once you've done it before, you know how to break it down and approach it with a clear mind."
With his fearless approach, dedication, and ever-improving skill set, Tristan Stubbs is not just a name to watch—he's a force to be reckoned with. As the IPL unfolds, fans will be eager to witness his journey, hoping he can turn potential into match-winning performances and help Delhi Capitals create history.

MS Dhoni, the heart and soul of Chennai Super Kings, remains the only active cricketing legend that IPL fans eagerly await each season. As the 2025 Indian Premier League approaches, the 43-year-old stalwart has once again defied age with his exceptional fitness and rigorous training.

Former cricketer Aakash Chopra shed light on why Dhoni prefers batting lower in the order. While many fans urge him to bat higher, Dhoni is honest about his abilities—he knows he can’t sustain long innings but thrives in pressure situations where his finishing prowess comes into play.

Punjab Kings have ushered in a new chapter of their IPL journey, unveiling their revamped squad, coaching staff, and leadership under the guidance of head coach Ricky Ponting and captain Shreyas Iyer. Ahead of their opening match, team's CEO Satish Menon along with head coach Ricky Ponting and team captain Shreyas Iyer, laid out its vision for the upcoming season, expressing confidence in their squad composition and future prospects.
Ponting, who took over the coaching reins six months ago, emphasised the importance of rebuilding the team from the ground up. The franchise strategically retained just two young players ahead of the auction, enabling them to enter the bidding process with a substantial purse. This approach allowed Punjab Kings to acquire key Indian talents such as Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal, ensuring a robust mix of experience and youth.
“We wanted to go into the auction with a clean slate, and I believe we have built an extremely balanced team. Our squad now consists of high-quality Indian players alongside strong overseas talent. The atmosphere in the camp is positive, and the players are motivated to give their best," said Ponting.

The appointment of Shreyas Iyer as captain was a pivotal decision for the franchise. Having previously worked with Iyer at Delhi Capitals, Ponting expressed his admiration for the batsman’s leadership skills and winning mentality. “Shreyas is an IPL-winning captain and one of the finest cricketers I have worked with. His presence will be instrumental in shaping our team’s identity," Ponting added.
Iyer, confident in his approach, declared his preferred batting position at No. 3, indicating clarity in his role within the team. “I am focusing on anchoring the innings at No. 3. It’s a position I am comfortable with, and I believe I can contribute significantly from there," he said.
As the franchise gears up for IPL 2025, they face the challenge of improving their home record, which has been underwhelming in recent seasons. Ponting and Iyer both stressed the importance of turning their home ground into a fortress and establishing dominance. “The past results don’t matter. We have a fresh team and a fresh mindset. We will analyse conditions, understand what works best for our venue, and ensure we make it a tough place for visiting teams," opined Ponting.

'We will be dynamic and destructive'

Menon echoed the sentiment of building a strong Punjab identity within the team. With the inclusion of several local players, the franchise aims to resonate with its regional fanbase and create a distinct cultural bond. “We are working on fostering a sense of togetherness within the squad. Having five Punjab players in the team adds to the local flavor and strengthens our identity. The camaraderie between players and the coaching staff is excellent," said Menon.
The franchise is also focused on expanding its fanbase, recognising that success on the field plays a crucial role in drawing support. “Winning brings fans. We already have a dedicated following, but this season, we aim to increase our reach significantly," Menon hinted at upcoming initiatives to enhance engagement.
With pre-season training underway and practice matches lined up, Punjab Kings are determined to set the tone early. Their opening encounter against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad will be a significant test, and Ponting has assured fans that they will witness an aggressive, fearless brand of cricket. “When we step onto the field, we will be dynamic, determined, and destructive. We are here to entertain and, most importantly, to win," Ponting signed off.
As Punjab Kings embark on their renewed IPL journey, the anticipation among fans is palpable. With a fresh squad, strategic leadership, and a well-defined vision, the team looks poised for an exciting season ahead.

IPL 2025 | 'We are here to entertain and, most importantly, to win', says PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting

The Indian Premier League is back, and as always, the buzz around the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is electrifying. With a revamped squad featuring a formidable batting lineup and a strengthened bowling attack, the perennial underachievers are once again aiming for the elusive title. However, one lingering question remains—does RCB have the firepower to go all the way?
De Villiers, who spent 11 seasons with RCB, believes that the team's strategic moves during the player auction have bolstered their chances. He said, "I really think they made some incredibly good moves in the auction. It's an incredibly good, balanced team." AB de Villiers, while addressing the media ahead of the 18th season of the TATA IPL on Star Sports Press Room on Explosive Rankings, emphasised the depth of the batting lineup, noting the blend of power and control, and expressed confidence in the team's potential to clinch the title this year.
‘Yes, they might be lacking an X-factor spinner, but I don't see it as a massive problem,’ he said. ‘The team has a wonderful balance this time, and that is going to be their biggest strength. Their real challenge will be navigating their tricky schedule, hopping across different venues. That will test their adaptability more than anything else."

A significant change for RCB this season is the appointment of Rajat Patidar as the new captain. De Villiers acknowledged the challenges Patidar might face, particularly the pressure of stepping into the shoes of former leaders like Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis. He advised Patidar to remain authentic in his leadership approach, saying, "His challenge will be trusting himself. He must not try to captain like Virat or Faf but lead in his own way. Use the experience around him, but always stay true to who he is.’"
Virat Kohli's role remains crucial for RCB. Despite stepping down from T20 internationals, De Villiers believes Kohli has 'plenty left in the tank', especially with the current batting lineup. He envisions Kohli as the 'batting captain', guiding the innings with his experience and game awareness. De Villiers also addressed external criticisms of Kohli's strike rate, suggesting that while outside opinions can influence any player, Kohli's focus and commitment on the field remain unwavering.
Interestingly, De Villiers also shared a light-hearted anecdote about the popular RCB chant 'Ee Sala Cup Namde', which translates to "This year, the cup is ours". He revealed that Kohli had messaged him, requesting him to refrain from using the phrase, perhaps to avoid jinxing their chances. De Villiers humorously recounted, "I said 'Ee Sala Cup Namde' somewhere and immediately got a text from Virat to not use it anymore."

'Rickelton-Rohit partnership might light up Wankhede'

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Indians are set to unleash a new weapon in South African batter Ryan Rickelton. Slotted to open alongside Rohit Sharma, the left-hander is in the form of his life and could be one of the most dangerous batters this season. ‘Rickelton and Rohit—the double R’s,’ AB de Villiers quipped. ‘That’s a partnership that could light up Wankhede this season. Mumbai loves an explosive overseas opener, and Rickelton fits the bill perfectly."
The IPL is known for producing young breakout stars, and former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes names like Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, and Suryakumar Yadav could take their performances to even greater heights this season. However, he pointed out, ‘T20 is a format designed for failure. You will fail more than you succeed. The challenge is to keep evolving."
On the other hand, Kolkata Knight Riders are dealing with some key departures, including Mitchell Starc and Phil Salt. They have tried to make up for it with Spencer Johnson and other additions, but whether they can replicate last season’s success remains to be seen. "The team is still strong, but their biggest challenge will be overcoming internal conflicts and finding the right balance," Chopra remarked.
As the season unfolds, the stage is set for an unforgettable IPL. Will RCB finally lift the trophy? Can Mumbai’s new opening duo set the tournament alight? And will Rajat Patidar’s leadership prove to be the X-factor for Bengaluru? One thing is certain—this season promises drama, intensity, and moments of pure cricketing brilliance.

The young cricketer, who was playing for Mumbai's U-14 team at the time, got his first glimpse of IPL up close, an experience that left a lasting impact on him.
Speaking on ‘Superstars’ programme, hosted by the digital broadcasters, Iyer recalled being a shy teenager but mustering the courage to interact with New Zealand’s Ross Taylor, who was playing for RCB.
"I grew up playing street cricket and was lucky to be a ball boy for that match. I remember being reserved while my friends approached players, but I decided to give it a try. Ross Taylor was one of my favourite players, so I went up to him and said, ‘Sir, I am a big fan of yours.’ He was very sweet and thanked me. Back then, it was common for kids to ask for bats or gloves, but I was too shy, even though I really wanted to," he said.

Since making his IPL debut in 2015, Iyer has made 3,127 runs at an average of 32.23 and a strike rate of 127.47, with 21 fifties. He was named the 'Emerging Player' in his debut season after scoring 439 runs for the Delhi Capitals. His leadership skills came to the fore in 2018 when he captained DC, guiding them to the 2020 finals. After moving to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2022, he led them to their first title in a decade in 2024 under the mentorship of Gautam Gambhir.
Now, as PBKS skipper, Iyer will aim to recreate his past successes when his team kicks off its 2025 campaign against the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium on March 25.
