Curtains were finally lifted on the Indian Premier League (IPL) retentions as all 10 franchises made their first move for the next season. One of the big names in the conversation was Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend who will don the IPL hat in its 18th season in 2025. While the retention is a big bonus for fans, the franchise could pay a big prize for a player who turned 43 in July. So will the CSK move to retain a player of Dhoni’s caliber pay off?

Background

At 43, it is unlikely that Dhoni will play for CSK for the next three years and could have paved the way for another uncapped retention had he decided to retire. However, his retention under the uncapped player rule means the franchise will lose only ₹40 million ($480,000) from their spending purse. After IPL 2024, Tushar Deshpande and young Rajvardhan Hangargekar could have been at the top of the list for CSK had the uncapped rule not changed.

But the new rule meant that MS Dhoni who had not played international cricket for five years was eligible as an uncapped player while Tushar’s two international caps during the Zimbabwe tour made him eligible. This left CSK franchise to decide on either Hangargekar or Dhoni to get retained. Part of the Indian U-19 World Cup winning squad in 2022, Hangargekar was paid a whopping ₹15 million ($180,000) at the auctions. However, since his move, he has been a squad player and not of more commercial value.

Why does MS Dhoni's retention at CSK make sense?

With Hangargekar also out of sight, CSK’s only option technically was MS Dhoni and they bought him for cheap. While he won’t be a great contributor on the field, his presence in the team is of great commercial value to the side and the Indian Premier League. Even at 43, Dhoni’s commercial value attracts a huge fan base and TRP for television.

In IPL 2024, fans were seen splashing a big sum on travel, tickets and merchandise to get a glimpse of Dhoni. On the other hand, Jio, a digital streaming partner of IPL had a special ‘star-cam’ for Dhoni during his IPL matches which solely focused on him. This contributed to the TRP and digital ratings of the channel.

While figures can’t be confirmed, Dhoni’s presence generates a big sum (likely to be 20 times his current value) for both CSK and IPL and other sponsors, making his move a commercial success rather than an on-field success.

IPL 2025: CSK land MS Dhoni as 'uncapped' player, but does the move make any sense?

After a chaotic last few days, the lid on player retention was finally lifted on Diwali as all 10 franchises announced their lists with a bang. The retention announced on Thursday (Oct 31) had some surprises, but the majority of the big-name players expected to be retained had their wish fulfilled and won’t enter mega auctions set to take place in the next few weeks. That set of players included the Mumbai Indians’ ‘fab-five’ of Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya. Interestingly, despite rumours, both Rohit and Hardik have been retained, with the latter continuing to serve as skipper.

In an announcement made on Thursday, Mumbai retained big-name players like Rohit, Hardik, Tilak, Suryakumar and Bumrah for the IPL 2025 and will have one Right to Match (RTM) card in hand for the mega auctions. Interestingly, excluding Tilak, the rest of the players have led the Indian cricket team which highlights the experience of the side.

Suryakumar Yadav (₹163.5mn, $1.94mn)

Hardik Pandya to lead Mumbai

Despite rumours and a wealth of captaincy material, Mumbai Indians have retained faith in Hardik Pandya to skipper the side. There were rumours of him not getting retained while Suryakumar Yadav could be on his way to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) if he does not get the captaincy. However, this won’t be the case as Sky and Rohit will both remain at the base of Mumbai Indians in Wankhede Stadium. On the other hand, Bumrah is the prize asset of the side with a whopping retention value of $2.14 million.

Who did Mumbai release?

With Tilak Varma getting the nod of retention, Ishan Kishan was the biggest name from the franchise that will enter the auctions. However, history suggests that won’t be the end of the road with MI for Ishan. In IPL 2022 mega auctions, while Ishan was released, the franchise paid a big sum to reacquire his services. With RTM in hand as well, Ishan could yet return to Mumbai and don their colours for IPL 2025.

All you need to know about IPL 2025 retention deadline day including teams, time and retained players

The Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions are around the corner as teams look to shuffle the pack for the 2025 season. While there could be some surprising reunions, teams will look to make sure there isn’t bad blood in the camp. One particular reunion that will be avoided will be that of Virender Sehwag and Glenn Maxwell. While Sehwag is currently not in proximity with any team, Maxwell still has high stocks and could land at any team.

Why is there bad blood between Sehwag and Maxwell?

In his new book, Maxwell explained the reason why he is not on good terms having fallen out with him during the Indian Premier League (IPL 2017) season. The duo was mentor and player that time before things went on a bad track. According to the book, Maxwell’s decisions as captain were not respected by Sehwag and there came a point where the team was run by the latter.

During IPL 2017, despite coach J Arun Kumar’s presence, Sehwag pulled the strings while Maxwell’s decision to add other coaching members to the Whatsapp group where key decisions were made did not go well.

The peak of the saga was when Ishant Sharma was not supposed to play while Eoin Morgan was drafted in place of pacer Matt Henry. The decision according to Maxwell made no sense as Punjab Kings later lost the match.

After the match, the fallout was evident with Maxwell prohibited from doing the press conference, instead Sehwag came slotted in. On their way back to the hotel, Maxwell was removed from the team’s main WhatsApp group, all but ending his ties with the franchise.

Maxwell texted Sehwag to say how much it hurt to read those comments and added that he had lost a fan in me for the way he had conducted himself. Sehwag's response was simple: "Don't need a fan like you." We never spoke again. I knew my time was at an end and told the owners as much: if Sehwag was going to stick around, they were making a mistake and not to bother with me. He only lasted one more season.

'Don't need a fan like you': The story of fallout between Virender Sehwag and Glenn Maxwell at Punjab Kings

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise SunRisers Hyderabad are set to retain skipper Pat Cummins and Travis Head ahead of the retention deadline day of October 31. The Australian duo was the standout performer for the South Indian side as they reached the final of the IPL 2024. With the auctions set to take place in the next few weeks, SRH are likely to retain faith in the duo, while the likes of Abhishek Sharma and Nitish Kumar Reddy also sit at the top of the franchise’s retention list.

Head, Cummins on retention list of SRH?

According to reports, Head and Cummins will be retained by the franchise as they look to shape their final plan. During IPL 2024, Cummins scalped 18 wickets in 16 matches and was a valuable addition to the side considering his ability to lead. He also scored 136 runs for the franchise and holds the record for fastest fifty in the IPL while he was playing for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

On the other hand, Head scored 567 runs and was the standout performer for the side in his 15 matches. This included a hundred and five fifties and Abhishek Sharma broke several batting records for the franchise.

SRH are also planning to retain Abhishek and Nitish Reddy from the Indian contingent while Heinrich Klaasen remains another overseas pick. Nitish’s retention will come at a big cost for SRH as he is no longer an uncapped player. He recently won his first India cap in the T20I series against Bangladesh, meaning he won’t be retained for INR 40 million ($475000).

What are the retention values?

A franchise can retain as many as six players before the auctions for price tags set by the IPL commission. In case the franchise does not retain six players, the remaining slots could be used as Right to Match (RTM) cards. An RTM allows a team to retain a player who represented the franchise in IPL 2024 by matching the final bid of the other franchise that intends to purchase it. Interestingly, out of the six retentions allowed, one has to be an uncapped Indian player, meaning a maximum of five capped players could be retained before the auctions.

The values for the retentions are as follows:

1. Player 1 - INR 180 million ($2.1m)

2. Player 2 - INR 140 million ($1.66)

3. Player 3 - INR 110 million ($1.3m)

IPL 2025: SRH to retain Pat Cummins, Travis Head before mega auctions - Report

Former India player Mohammed Kaif has taken a slight dig at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after commenting on the recently amended policy for Indian Premier League (IPL) retentions. According to Kaif, the rules will keep changing for veteran player MS Dhoni as he is on the verge of playing one more season for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL.

Kaif takes a dig at BCCI

"You will get the chance to see MS Dhoni again. He is fit, batting at a strike rate of 200, keeping well, and that is why I believe the rules will keep changing till he wants to play. If he wants to play in the IPL, he will play. He is such a big player, such a big match-winner, and has been a leader for CSK," said Kaif on Star Sports.

On Saturday the BCCI approved five retentions per side along with a Right to Match (RTM) card in the mega-auctions that could take place in the next couple of months. It is the biggest retention ever offered as teams prepare for a shake-up before the IPL 2025 season.

The five retained players will cost INR 750 million ($9mn) for IPL teams and can retain as many as six players from their current squad. There is no cap on Indian and foreign players as franchises like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings can breathe a sigh of relief as they face complications in retaining their star names.

Dhoni set for another season?

Now that the policy is approved, Dhoni’s retention with CSK is set to go smoothly as they will still have four other slots to retain other big players like Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Maheesh Theekshana and Moeen Ali. It is a similar case for Mumbai Indians with star names like Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and current skipper Hardik Pandya in the ranks.

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auctions fast approaching, teams are gearing up for a crucial period as they look to put together a specific strategy to get the best deal done. With the auctions set to take place in the next couple of months, former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) player Mohammed Kaif has urged the franchise to sign Mumbai Indians star Rohit Sharma in case he is available for the auctions.

Kaif backs RCB for Mumbai Indians star

"RCB should take this chance. Somehow convince Rohit and make him the captain. He might not score that much as a batter, he scores forties and fifties, but I believe Rohit knows how to build a playing eleven very well," Kaif said while speaking on Star Sports.

According to early reports in June, Mumbai Indians were considering releasing Rohit, however, recent news could come as a spanner in the work for the IPL franchise. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has approved up to five retentions and one Right to Match (RTM) card. This means Mumbai Indians can retain the likes of Rohit, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav.

RCB, on the other hand, will look to put in a strategy for the mega auctions as they will certainly retain Virat Kohli and Mohammed Siraj for the IPL 2025. Eyes will be also on the likes of Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell and Faf du Plessis, who could also get retained for the side.

IPL mega auction: Mohammed Kaif urges RCB to take chance on THIS Mumbai Indians star

Former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik has broken the silence on the most-talked-about IPL rule mentioned in the latest regulations issued by the BCCI – the return of the ‘uncapped player rule’. Karthik says this rule, which was there since the tournament’s inception and later discarded in 2021, is brought back by the board for just one man, MS Dhoni.

What does this ‘uncapped player rule’ mean?

Per the BCCI and IPL’s latest guidelines issued for the 2025-2027 window, any Indian player who last appeared for the national side at least five years ago to the upcoming auction date will be considered an uncapped player and can be retained under the ‘uncapped player rule’ by each of the ten franchises.

Although not many options are available with each team, the former five-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have a golden chance to retain their ex-captain and marquee player MS Dhoni under the ‘uncapped player category’ ahead of the mega auction later this year.

Dhoni last played for India during the 2019 World Cup in England, and with him already completing more than five years since, he is eligible to fall under this bracket. What’s more than this? CSK doesn't have to splurge money on his retention since his IPL future remains uncertain and can retain him for INR 4 crore.

What did Karthik say?

Dinesh Karthik, who last played for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2024, said he understands why this rule has been brought back, and that, he understands the dynamics behind it.

"Everybody talks about it. This rule is made for one man, and I am for it through and through. This man has been such a major part of what this IPL has been about. If everybody is in a happy place - be it BCCI, be it any of the teams, be it how the league has performed over the years and how it has kept players so happy over the last 15-18 years, this man has played a major role,” Karthik said during an interaction on Cricbuzz.

"You can ask any TV broadcaster, and you will get the answer that when this man steps on the field, the ratings go up. This is a fact. If you are going to do something that is going to help the league, why not? You don't want to bend and break the rules, but if it's a fair one, where all teams have been informed, and they all feel it's fair, let's go ahead. Why not? He is a special cricketer,” he continued.

BCCI announces BUMPER pay rise, players to pocket $9000 per match starting IPL 2025

Chennai Super Kings’ path for retaining their legendary player MS Dhoni in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have been given a massive boost on Saturday (Sep 28). The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has approved five retentions per side along with a Right to Match (RTM) card in the mega-auctions that could take place in the next couple of months.
Five retention, one RTM per side?

According to ESPNcricinfo, a reliable cricket site, the IPL governing council has approved five retentions per side along with an RTM.

Teams will be given a purse of INR 1.15-1.20 billion ($13.7-14.3 million) a significant increase for franchisees to spend. This could also mean for the first time IPL’s net spend in a season could reach above INR 10 billion ($120mn).

What is RTM?

The Right to Match (RTM) is a special provision given to a franchise that can purchase a player who was released by matching the bid to another team. For instance, if Ishan Kishan is released by Mumbai Indians and is bought by another franchise for a certain amount, Mumbai will have the right to match the bid and get Ishan back to the franchise. However, the RTM can be used only once during the mega-auctions.

It is the biggest retention ever offered in history as teams prepare for a shake-up before the IPL 2025 season. Five retention, one RTM per side? According to ESPNcricinfo, a reliable cricket site, the IPL governing council has approved five retentions per side along with an RTM. With limited slots earlier it was unlikely to retain all of them, however, with amended policy all the above names could be retained without entering the mega-auctions.

IPL 2025: BCCI approves five retentions, one RTM card ahead of mega auctions

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auctions fast approaching, franchises are set to lay out plans for the next campaign. Part of the conversation could see Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retain a chunk of star names including Ravindra Jadeja and Gaikwad. However, the biggest name that is in the headlines is MS Dhoni as fans await his future. According to reports, CSK will retain Dhoni if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) approves amendments to the retention policy.

CSK set to retain Dhoni?

According to reliable media reports, the CSK have shortlisted names to be retained for the IPL 2025. This includes Jadeja and Gaikwad while Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana are also in the hat. However, Dhoni remains the biggest name that CSK are looking to retain. It is reported that CSK will retain Dhoni once they get the green light from the BCCI for retention policy amendments.

If that is the case, part of the agreement remains that Dhoni will be retained as the lowest bid category as per mutual agreement.

The legendary former India captain will turn 44 in 2025 indicating his days are numbered as a playing sensation. Like IPL 2024, it is expected that the upcoming season will be Dhoni’s last for the franchise before he announces his retirement from professional cricket.

While his status as a legend remains intact, he will look to add more titles to his trophy cabinet. He has lifted the IPL title on five occasions, being captain on all those occasions. He also lifted the now-abolished Champions League on two occasions.

Jadeja, Gaikwad retain faith

Jadeja who has previously been on the hotspot for a reported spat with the CSK management will be retained. It is expected that he will be the most valuable retention at the franchise while Gaikwad will be retained as the captain of the side. In case the BCCI approves the retention amendments, Shivam Dube will be the third Indian player on the list along with Pathirana. In case the retention policy is amended, CSK will release Dube for auctions and retain Dhoni.

CSK set to retain Jadeja, Ruturaj for IPL 2025; Dhoni retention subject to policy amendment from BCCI: Reports

Newly-appointed Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting revealed what attracted him to accept their offer despite interests from several teams ahead of IPL 2025. Ponting, who previously coached Delhi Capitals for seven seasons, detailed what he told his new team owners and shared his thoughts on retention plans as the mega auction date nears.

Of all the IPL teams since the inaugural edition, Punjab Kings is among the three franchises (DC and RCB) that are yet to put their hands on the trophy. However, Ponting, who expressed keenness in taking over the job, with the willingness and aim to turn the tables around come next season, revealed plenty needs to be done behind the scenes to ensure PBKS takes home the IPL trophy.

In an exclusive interview with ESPNcricinfo, Ponting revealed why he chose this unit when other, perhaps former winners, unnamed yet, approached him for the head coach role.

Putting it under ‘Project Punjab’, Punter, as cricket fans call him, revealed the youngsters and the talent pool in PBKS dressing attracted him and that working with them to come on top looked like a challenge, which he willingly accepted.

“Yes, I was talking to a few teams, but it was 'Project Punjab' which attracted me. It is a team that hasn't had a lot of success over a long period of time, a team that's changed coaches a lot, so I saw it as a challenge.

“The other exciting part is that I saw some really exciting youngsters last year at Kings that hopefully we can attract back to the team for this season and put together a team that is going to be good enough to win the IPL.

“I mean, there's no doubting over the years that the Kings have had good players, have had good teams. They just haven't been able to win it yet. I have a longish-term deal there, and hopefully, during that period of time we can win the IPL,” Ponting said.

‘Picking a captain is a priority for me’ – Ponting

Ricky was blunt and honest in his acceptance of informing the owners to interfere less, letting the coaches and the captain take charge of what would happen on the field. Though he openly talked about having accountability and autonomy within the group, Ponting feels picking the right man to lead does half of the job.

When asked about his role in picking a captain at the upcoming mega auction, Ponting said irrespective of whether the player is an Indian or overseas, he needs the right man for the right job.

“With this mega auction coming up, either we have to decide to retain someone in our current group that we think is the best person for the job, or we have to go into the auction looking for the best possible candidate, whether that's an Indian or overseas player.

“And make sure that him and I work together. If the captain and coach are on the same page and work together, that's when the magic happens,” he continued.

Ponting on IPL retention rules

The BCCI will formally announce the revised retention rules ahead of the mega auction, and Ponting feels plenty of work needs to be done to have a settled unit at the helm. Although Ponting disagrees with the ‘more retention is better for the team’ policy, he still backs the current lot of players to help PBKS realise its dream of winning the title.

“It is going to depend on the retention numbers. Say, if it's eight players, then all of a sudden that's 80 players [retained, if all ten teams retain that many].

“There's not going to be a lot of quality players left in the auction, so putting together a squad then would be more difficult. The more the numbers come down on retention, the easier it's going be to put a squad of players together.

“In this current Kings group, you think of some of the young Indian players they have: Prabhsimran [Singh], Ashutosh [Sharma], Shashank [Singh], Jitesh [Sharma], Arshdeep [Singh], Harpreet Brar, Harshal [Patel]. Then among the overseas lot, we have [Liam] Livingstone, [Sam] Curran, [Kagiso] Rabada, [Jonny] Bairstow - there's enough quality,” he noted.

IPL 2025: Ricky Ponting reveals why he chose Punjab Kings over other teams; details on essentials

Indian Premier League (IPL) outfit Punjab Kings (PBKS) have reportedly appointed legendary Australia player Ricky Ponting as their new head coach. Ponting, sacked in July by Delhi Capitals after a seven-year stint, will have a huge task in hand to guide PBKS back into the IPL playoffs. PBKS finished ninth in IPL 2024 and have not reached the playoffs since 2014 when they were runners-up having lost to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final.

Ponting set for PBKS role

According to a report from ESPNcricinfo, Ponting has signed a multi-year deal with PBKS and will have huge decision-making ahead of the mega-auctions that are set to take place at the end of the month. His first job will be to appoint a coaching staff which currently comprises Trevor Bayliss (head coach), Sanjay Bangar (head of cricket development), Charl Langeveldt (fast-bowling coach), and Sunil Joshi (spin-bowling coach).

The second job will be to prepare a strategy for the IPL auctions and retain players for the next season. The likes of Arshdeep Singh, Sam Curran and Harshal Patel remain top of the retention list while Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma could also give a good headache to the Aussie.

The IPL auction strategy will also include getting a new captain for the side after Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement.

Having started his IPL career with Kolkata Knight Riders, Ponting’s first piece of silverware came in 2013 when he won the title with Mumbai Indians. He would then serve in a coaching role at Mumbai before being appointed as the Delhi Capitals head coach in 2017, with him taking over during the IPL 2018 season.

During his stint as DC coach, he helped the franchise reach playoffs from 2019 to 2021. The IPL 2020 season remains the most successful in the franchise’s history having reached the IPL final but lost to Mumbai Indians.

IPL 2025: Punjab Kings appoint Ricky Ponting as new head coach; takes over after Delhi Capitals sacking

The Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) needs more time before announcing the revised IPL retention rules.

The decision, expected to be made public by the end of August, could be delayed until September end, around the 29th, when the Annual General Meeting (AGM) takes place in Bengaluru. Although BCCI hasn't officially announced the decision release date, recent reports suggest that the information has been circulated among team owners and stakeholders.

According to Cricbuzz, there is no direct link between the AGM and IPL policies, but an earlier announcement wouldn't be surprising either. However, the growing belief in the IPL circuit suggests that BCCI might take at least ten days or two weeks to announce their decision. BCCI officials have hinted at the delay to franchise owners, who have been inquiring about the retention rules.

Regardless of when BCCI makes the announcement, all ten IPL teams have until November 15 this year to finalise their retention lists. The next mega IPL auction, scheduled for December this year, will feature the Right to Match (RTM) card option, which was absent in 2022.

Earlier, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanath revealed that the BCCI proposed considering retired players (who retired at least five years ago) in the uncapped category, potentially boosting MS Dhoni's chances of playing another season.

Dhoni announced his international retirement on August 15, 2020, and with five years completed, he could be retained as an uncapped player with a lower value if BCCI implements this policy.

However, allowing retired players to join the IPL auction might not significantly impact its budget. The BCCI will adjust the budget based on the number of players each team retains, enabling teams to determine player prices without assigning a specific value to each retained player.

Besides, some IPL teams have altered their leadership groups, with Rajasthan Royals appointing former captain and mentor Rahul Dravid as their new head coach. Delhi Capitals have parted ways with head coach Ricky Ponting, while IPL 2024 winners Kolkata Knight Riders are seeking a high-profile replacement for Gautam Gambhir as their new mentor.

BCCI needs more time to decide on IPL retention rules as announcement delayed till September end

Tushar Deshpande is an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) line-up. After joining the team in 2022, he didn't have the best of starts. Since 2023, he has been able to turn things around and become a regular in the playing XI. In 2023, he ended with 21 scalps as MS Dhoni & Co. won the title for the fifth time. In 2024, he returned with 17 wickets. Although Deshpande has been expensive occasionally, he has made a mark of taking wickets at crucial junctures. The 29-year-old, who recently made his international debut during the Zimbabwe tour, recalled how Dhoni groomed him when he joined CSK and the advice he received from the India legend.

Talking to ESPNCricinfo, Deshpande said, "[Dhoni told me]: 'You have everything to succeed at international level. But you have to be calm during your run-up. Don't get distracted by the crowd. Just take a deep breath, stay calm and bowl.' If Mahi tells you that you have everything to be successful at the international level, boss, that itself is an achievement."

Deshpande recalled IPL 2023's opening game between then defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) and CSK, in Ahmedabad. Back then, the Yellow Army failed to defend 178/7, with the Chennai pacer ending with figures of 3.2-0-51-1. Dhoni, however, backed Deshpande as the speedster remembered the former Indian captain saying, "Mahi came to me and said: 'You haven't made any mistakes. You bowled all good balls. It was not your day today. In the next match repeat the same."

However, Deshpande's biggest learning from Dhoni came during a match simulation in the CSK nets. He revealed, "I was bowling good yorkers, but suddenly I bowled a bouncer and got hit for a 100-metre six. He asked me: 'Kyun daala bouncer?' [Why did you bowl the bouncer?] I told him I thought he was expecting the yorker. He told me: Don't play cricket in the mind. Yorker is a yorker and no one can hit you."

Deshpande added, "He was telling me we keep trying to play ahead of the game instead of staying in the present. The other thing he told me is to focus on my fitness, which is important for fast bowlers."

Under Dhoni, Deshpande has improved his bowling and made his international debut during India's five T20Is versus hosts Zimbabwe, following the 2024 T20 World Cup. Meanwhile, there remains no clarity regarding Dhoni's IPL future. He was succeeded by Ruturaj Gaikwad as the CSK captain ahead of IPL 2024.

Priyansh Arya and Ayush Badoni broke multiple T20 records on Saturday (Aug 31) while playing for South Delhi Superstarz in Delhi & District Cricket Association's (DDCA) Delhi Premier League (DPL). Both the batters hit centuries as South Delhi crossed the 300-run mark in their 20 overs against North Delhi Strikers.

The records, however, are not counted in first-class cricket as it is not directly a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) tournament.

Both the batters, however, showed sublime hitting, adding 286 runs for the second wicket - the highest ever partnership for any wicket in a T20 match including first class and franchise-based tournaments.

IPL: Former India bowler Zaheer Khan succeeds Gautam Gambhir as new mentor for Lucknow Super Giants

The countdown for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has begun with franchises and team owners planning for the mega auctions which will take place later in the year. While plenty of big names are set to go under the hammer, one name that is making the rounds is legendary Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player MS Dhoni. Now 43, CSK are still planning to retain the player but have proposed a change in the rule to have the services of the player who will likely play his last season in the IPL 2025.

CSK propose change in rule

According to a report from Espncricinfo, the CSK owners have proposed a change in rule during the IPL stakeholders meeting on Wednesday (July 31). According to reports, CSK wanted the reintroduction of a rule that had existed since the inaugural edition in 2008 until 2021, when it was believed to have been scrapped at the behest of teams. According to this rule, if a player was retired from international cricket for five or more years, they would be classified as an uncapped player. It is understood that apart from CSK, the majority of the other franchises were not in favour of reintroducing the rule.

MS Dhoni last played for India in 2019 and could qualify as an uncapped player for the IPL 2025 if the rule is reintroduced. However, apart from CSK, other teams are not in favour of the rule putting a big spanner in the works for Dhoni to be retained.

Can Dhoni still play for CSK in IPL 2025?

CSK still have three options to get Dhoni's services in IPL 2025 – they can retain him as part of the retention policy. However, this will see CSK lose out on a big chunk of cash while spending in the auction due to the retention value of the player. The second option could see CSK release Dhoni and ask him to enter the auction and purchase him with the Right to Retain (RTM) card, which allows CSK to match the winning bid for any of their former unretained players.

However, the RTM is not yet officially confirmed for the IPL 2025 mega auctions and is subject to further board meetings. The final option for CSK will be to outbid every other franchise in the mega auctions in case RTM is not in place which allows them to retain MS Dhoni’s services.

Will MS Dhoni play in IPL 2025? CSK propose change in rule to retain legendary player

Former India great and Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni awaits changes in the revised ‘IPL retention policy’ before taking a final call on his future in the cash-rich league.

Following the much-talked-about governing council meeting late on Wednesday night (July 31) in Mumbai, the BCCI and IPL will come out with the final decision on the players’ retention and the future of the mega auction sooner. Dhoni, who turned 43 in July this year, says he has time and several factors to consider before going public with his decision.

"There is a lot of time for it," Dhoni said at an event in Hyderabad, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. "We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court.

"So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team,” he continued.

Meanwhile, the BCCI met IPL franchise owners and other stakeholders to discuss several topics, with the agenda including discussions on the future of the Impact Player rule, which the BCCI introduced in 2022; how many player retentions should happen and how often should a mega auction take place?

Considering MS Dhoni’s age and reflexes, which looks far from diminishing, he used the Impact Player Rule to his advantage in IPL 2024. With the latest reports suggesting that some team owners have urged the board to scrap this rule, Dhoni’s future could hang in limbo.

Time is inching closer

Just before the start of IPL 2024, MS Dhoni relinquished the CSK captaincy, handing over the baton to opener Ruturaj Gaikwad. That step, however, cleared some air over Dhoni’s IPL future, with everyone anticipating the end of his cricketing career.

However, with Dhoni showing a willingness to continue being part of the squad for perhaps one more season, eyeing his record sixth IPL trophy, the chances of him staying around are also there.

In IPL 2024, Dhoni made headlines for smashing humongous sixes, bashing 13 and 14 fours, respectively. His strike rate of 220.54 was enough to keep CSK in the playoff race until they lost an away thriller to bow out of the tournament.

Meanwhile, MS Dhoni is an IPL legend. In 264 contested matches, he scored 5243 runs, striking at over 137. Dhoni had led CSK to joint-most five IPL trophies, last won in 2023.

MS Dhoni waiting for revised ‘retention policies’ to decide on IPL future

The time has come for all the IPL team owners and the BCCI to sit and discuss the much-awaited topics - player retention and Right to Match (RTM) ahead of the mega auction. Per the latest reports, all stakeholders will meet on July 30 or 31 in Mumbai to discuss the key factors that are significant in deciding the tournament and franchises’ fate.

Although such meetings happen at a five-star hotel, the BCCI has invited all the owners to their newly refurbished office inside the Wankhede Stadium complex this time.

Considering the complex model of player retention at IPL auctions, there have been different views on the same. Some top-performing teams have pushed for the number to increase to as many as eight (from the earlier four), with an eye on maintaining the continuation since they have an established fan base.

Such teams argue that for them to maintain fan engagement and brand building, they need to build a team around such players who were and will remain an integral part of the franchise’s image worldwide.

On the contrary, there have been franchises that want player retentions to be minimal, pushing for a whole new setup and group to begin the next season with. Besides, there is also a debate about whether the Right to Match (RTM) should be permitted. As per earlier reports, the IPL CEO Hemang Amin spoke with each team owner and their representatives earlier this month, to get an idea of how to formulate these two key factors.

Salary cap and retention value

The salary cap for each team might also increase to $14.3m (INR 120 crore) in the first year of the next three-year cycle. Also, all stakeholders will discuss the retention value of each player.

During the previous cycle, the salary of the top-retained player was about 16-17% of the salary cap, which makes it $1.8m (INR 15 crore) in a salary cap of $10.8m (INR 90 crore).

However, if everything goes according to the plan and the BCCI decides to raise the salary cap, each of the top-retained players from every franchise will pocket $2.3m (INR 20 crore).

Meanwhile, reports are doing the rounds suggesting that Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant could join Chennai Super Kings ahead of IPL 2025 while batting mainstay KL Rahul could leave Lucknow Super Giants for his former franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru from next season onwards.

Player retention, Right to Match on agenda as BCCI and IPL owners to meet in July end

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Gujarat Titans could have a new owner as the side is reported to be in talks with a new owner. Gujarat Titans, who won the IPL in 2022 in their inaugural season are currently in talks with Adani and Torrent groups to sell a controlling stake. Current owners CVC Capital Partners are likely to sell the Ahmedabad-based franchise with the two Indian conglomerates likely to bid having already invested in several sports teams including Pro Kabaddi League (PKL).

GT on sale by CVC group

According to media reports, the 2022 champions have been put up for sale by the CVC group which has stakes in big tournaments like La Liga, Premiership Rugby and the Women’s Tennis Association. Having enjoyed success in the world’s most decorative cricket league, the franchise is now likely to sell a major controlling stake according to a report from The Economic Times. Both Adani Group and Torrent Group are the front-runners to get stakes at the Gujarat Titans who have already enjoyed success in the IPL.

According to the report, The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) lock-in period which will prohibit new teams from selling a stake will end in February next year. Therefore, with the lock-in period set to expire in February, GT could have new owners at the start of the IPL 2025 season.

For CVC, it is a good opportunity to monetise its stake in the franchise,” an official aware of the development was quoted as saying by The Economic Times.

The value of the franchise is between $1 billion and $1.5 billion which will make it one of the most expensive sporting brands in the world.

Therefore, with the lock-in period set to expire in February, GT could have new owners at the start of the IPL 2025 season. ALSO READ | UNBELIEVABLE! For CVC, it is a good opportunity to monetise its stake in the franchise,” an official aware of the development was quoted as saying by The Economic Times. The value of the franchise is between $1 billion and $1.5 billion which will make it one of the most expensive sporting brands in the world.

Indian conglomerate in talks with IPL franchise Gujarat Titans in major takeover bid

New Zealand players are likely to miss the start of the Indian Premier League (2025) season after the home calendar for the 2024-25 season was announced on Wednesday (July 17). Players like Devon Convey, Tom Latham and others could now miss the services at the start of the IPL 2025 which could affect their value in the upcoming mega-auctions. Pakistan will tour New Zealand in March and April after the ICC Champions Trophy concludes, meaning there won’t be too much space for the players between the tournaments.

What is the scenario?

After the Champions Trophy concludes in the second week of March (dates yet to be finalised), Pakistan will make the long journey to New Zealand to play three ODIs and five T20Is. The tour will officially begin on March 16 with the first T20I in Christchurch. The five-match T20I series will then conclude on March 26 with the ODI series next. The 50-over format will then start on March 29 and conclude on April 5 with the third and final ODI.

While the IPL 2025 schedule is not yet finalised, it is expected that the mega-rich league will kick off in the last week of March and conclude in the final week of May to accommodate rest for players before they play in the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final in London.

The WTC final will play a pivotal role in IPL fixture scheduling as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remains in favour of no compromise with the mega-rich league. Assuming the WTC final takes place in June first week, the IPL 2025 will likely start in March, meaning New Zealand players will miss out on the start.

New Zealand players to miss out on big sum?

With New Zealand players likely to miss a couple of the initial weeks of the IPL, franchises will give a second thought on getting the players during the auctions. This year the mega auctions will once again take place with franchises hesitant to splash cash on players who are not available for the entire season. Last season, Aussie speedster Josh Hazlewood was not picked up by any franchise at the Dubai’s mini-auction after he announced that he wouldn’t play the entire season.

Delhi Capitals, who finished sixth and missed out on a top-four finish in the IPL 2024, confirmed the news on Saturday penning an emotional note for the legendary figure. The franchise, however, hasn't announced a replacement for Ponting with the next season still 10 months away.

Ponting’s departure marks the end of an era for Delhi Capitals who peaked under the Australian coach during the IPL 2020 when they reached the final before losing to Mumbai Indians. Despite being a popular figure in the camp, Ponting could not help DC win the IPL and had an empty trophy cabinet. While nothing is yet clear on the next head coach, DC will have months to contemplate before stepping into the mega auctions.

DC to have major changes before Mega Auctions

Before the next season, IPL will have its mega auctions with DC planning a huge overhaul, including the futures of a few players who could be released. The franchise has largely been unsuccessful in reaching the Playoff during Ponting’s reign. However, reports suggest DC will opt to stay with Pravin Amre who will continue to serve the side while Sourav Ganguly will also continue with the franchise.

Franchise cricket has come in the way of emerging players eyeing an international career, with youngsters becoming more inclined towards playing franchise-based T20 Leagues worldwide. Considering the model is money-minting, the reason behind the tilt is understandable; however, Australia Test Captain Pat Cummins has a solution to this problem.

Cummins has exceeded on all fronts, from playing for Australia and delivering it across formats to winning matches at will in a handful of leagues he plays in. Speaking at MCC World Cricket Connects 2024 at Lord's lately, Cummins admits that this form of cricket has taken over because it’s more financially rewarding, while the participating players are aware of the windows, managing their calendars effectively.

That, however, is not the case with centrally-contracted international players, who also wish to make a fortune out of it, and often get stuck between picking one.

"Franchise cricket for some countries is more lucrative, more appealing than international cricket," Cummins said, as quoted by the Sydney Morning Herald. "If I went and played franchise cricket, I could probably be away for a half or a third of the amount we are for Australia."

Separate windows for IPL, Tests

With the rise of the Indian Premier League over the years, it has become a yardstick for selection, at least in the shortest format, with the best players across all nations willing to partake in the competition. Owing to BCCI’s influence on world cricket, more so for the revenue it generates throughout, no or least international cricket is scheduled during its window.

Given what BCCI and IPL bring to the table, such a change in the overall picture makes sense, and Cummins, who plays in the cash-rich league, feels if there is a separate window for both competitions, it can benefit the players and Test cricket.

"In Australia, you know Test cricket is from November to January, and basically no other cricket is going to get in the way of us playing Test cricket then. If we can have specific windows for IPL but then also Test windows, that makes the decision-making for the players a lot easier," Cummins continued.

Meanwhile, England white-ball captain Jos Buttler commented on the same, saying international cricket and IPL should take place separately.

“It’s my personal opinion that there shouldn’t be any international cricket that clashes with the IPL. I think that these games have been on the calendar for a long time,” Buttler said to Sky Sports earlier.

The 39-year-old, who made his ODI debut for India as a 19-year-old back in 2004, has vast batting experience of over two decades during which he played 26 Tests, 94 One-Day Internationals and 60 T20 Internationals for India. “I believe that cricket success hinges not only on technical proficiency but also on match intelligence and composure. I am eager to coach and mentor our batting group, helping them to not only refine their method but also to develop the keen match awareness needed to excel under pressure. It’s also great that I can continue my association with RCB as the franchise continues to move from strength to strength,” he added.

Karthik’s batting style and electric presence on the field had also made him an instant favourite with the RCB 12th-man Army. His ability to shape the team’s fortunes with his cool-headed approach to batting made him a natural fit in RCB’s quest of nurturing and guiding young Indian batters alongside coach Andy Flower.

Former West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle is of the view that India runs the cricketing world and that no one can challenge the authority of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The legendary cricketer's comments come in the backdrop of a section of fans blaming ICC for altering the T20 World Cup schedule and timings to suit the Indian audience - the main source of money for the governing body.

“No one can speak to India. India runs cricket, you know? It’s a fact. Who is going to talk to India? Who is going to challenge India? No one. They control cricket," Gayle was quoted as saying by DafaNews.

Gayle also reflected on the Indian Premier League (IPL) and said there should be a separate window where only the marquee franchise tournament is held so that players do not have to leave midway.

“When the IPL is going on, you see players who have to leave the tournament to go play for their countries,” said Gayle.

“If you have an IPL window [then] it should just be the IPL in that window. You shouldn’t have international cricket during that time frame, because there’s only one team that’s going to benefit, and it's India. That’s unfair. You cannot have a system like that.”

He cited the example of the World Cup window where all other bilateral series are put on hold.

“If it’s a World Cup window, then it’s just that, nothing else. Same for the IPL. If you want the best players in the world to be playing in the IPL, the biggest franchise in history, then you have to allow them to play in that particular window without interference like international cricket. You cannot pull players out of such a big franchise tournament, because it’s unfair and too one-sided,” he added.

'No one can speak to India': Chris Gayle on BCCI's domination in world cricket

Star South Africa keeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen has slammed IPL’s Impact Player Rule, saying it must stay away from international cricket for the batter’s creativity to remain intact. Impact Player Rule changed IPL’s equation this year, with teams scoring massive totals.

Klaasen, who was among the runs this season for SunRisers Hyderabad, smashing sixes at will, said it provides batters with more freedom, giving them license to go all out even on good pitches.

“The Impact sub-rule allowed batsmen to play with much more freedom, and the execution was at a different level on pitches that were good. In the IPL, you are measured by the number of sixes you hit and your strike rate. That’s your bread and butter, and no one worries about your average,” Klaasen said while speaking to SportsBoom.

Meanwhile, there were countless examples of how the 12th man or the Impact Sub changed the result of a game this season. Voting against bringing this rule to the international stage, Klaasen said, as it frees up the batting side way too much, with teams having batters batting till number nine, it kills the zeal that bowlers or even all-rounders bring to the game.

“But I hope the impact sub does not come into international cricket. It frees up the batting side too much, and you can have a batsman at number nine with it, so there’s no need for anyone to hang around,” he said.

Klaasen added that this rule takes away the batting creativity needed in difficult conditions and tricky tracks, which wasn’t the case this season.

“It takes away the creativity of batting; it takes away smart batting. The Impact sub will take away that sort of brilliance, to sum up conditions and hang around a bit against just bombing the ball over small boundaries.”

“It will allow teams to not play the situation so well. We also don’t get a lot of difficult pitches in the IPL, which is why the way teams go extremely hard in the Powerplay is the big trend and then the middle-order adjusts depending on whether you’re in trouble or flying,” Klaasen continued.

Klaasen latest to bash Impact Player Rule

Meanwhile, Klaasen is not the first high-profile player to come out and speak against this, as India captain Rohit Sharma and Delhi Capitals coach and cricket veteran Ricky Ponting have also criticised it earlier.

The Impact sub will take away that sort of brilliance, to sum up conditions and hang around a bit against just bombing the ball over small boundaries.” “It will allow teams to not play the situation so well. We also don’t get a lot of difficult pitches in the IPL, which is why the way teams go extremely hard in the Powerplay is the big trend and then the middle-order adjusts depending on whether you’re in trouble or flying,” Klaasen continued. Klaasen latest to bash Impact Player Rule Meanwhile, Klaasen is not the first high-profile player to come out and speak against this, as India captain Rohit Sharma and Delhi Capitals coach and cricket veteran Ricky Ponting have also criticised it earlier. While Rohit said this Impact Player Rule defuses all-rounders’ role in the team, Ponting said it is a nightmare for the coaches and the captain, increasing the burden of piling up strategies.

Next time I will make sure that I will not use it as a send-off. This is my cricket. I have always played my cricket like this. I am a fun-loving guy off the field but on the cricket pitch, I am not there to make friends, I want to win," said Rana.
