IPL 2025: Rishabh Pant aims to 'lead proactively' as Lucknow Super Giants gear up for season

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is back for its 18th edition, and for fans of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), there is a growing sense of destiny attached to the number 18. The most loyal supporters of the franchise know this number all too well—it is the jersey number of their talisman, Virat Kohli.

For over a decade, Kohli has carried RCB on his shoulders, often being the lone warrior in a team that has struggled to cross the final hurdle. As IPL 2025 kicks off, the question arises once again: could this be the year RCB finally breaks its long-standing curse and lifts the coveted trophy?

RCB’s journey: The eternal bridesmaids

Since the inception of the IPL in 2008, Royal Challengers Bangalore has been one of the most followed and passionately supported teams. Based in the cricket-mad city of Bangalore (now Bengaluru), the team has had everything—superstars, a strong fan base, financial backing, and electric home support at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Yet, the one thing that has remained elusive is the IPL trophy.

RCB has reached the final three times—2009, 2011, and 2016—only to fall short on each occasion. The 2009 final saw them lose to the Deccan Chargers, despite a solid campaign. In 2011, they were blown away by Chennai Super Kings and a rampaging MS Dhoni-led squad. But the most painful defeat arguably came in 2016, when Virat Kohli had a dream season, scoring a record-breaking 973 runs, only for RCB to stumble in the final against Sunrisers Hyderabad. That season remains one of the biggest 'what-ifs' in IPL history.

Over the years, RCB has been home to some of the biggest names in T20 cricket—Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell, Faf du Plessis, and of course, Kohli. Despite their individual brilliance, the team has often lacked balance, particularly in the bowling department. The 'RCB curse' has become a running joke among IPL fans, but 2025 might just be the year things change.

Bengaluru's love affair with cricket

Bengaluru has always been a cricketing powerhouse. The city has produced legends like Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, and Javagal Srinath. The Chinnaswamy Stadium is one of the most iconic venues in India, known for its electric atmosphere and high-scoring games due to its short boundaries. Yet, despite the love for cricket in the city, RCB has not been able to deliver a title to its passionate supporters.

Bengaluru's other major franchise, the Bengaluru Bulls in the Pro Kabaddi League, has tasted success, winning the PKL title in 2018. This has made RCB’s lack of silverware even more glaring. However, if there’s one thing common between RCB fans and Bengaluru's sporting culture, it’s resilience. The city continues to rally behind its team, no matter how many heartbreaks they endure.

The symbolism of 18

The number 18 holds a special place in RCB’s history, primarily because of Virat Kohli. He has worn this number throughout his career, both for India and RCB. The 18th edition of the IPL, therefore, feels symbolic—it’s as if the cricketing universe is aligning for Kohli and RCB to finally lift the trophy.

Kohli, who stepped down as RCB captain after the 2021 season, remains the heart and soul of the team. Even without the armband, he continues to be their biggest match-winner and emotional leader. Could IPL 2025 be the perfect script for Kohli to finally lift the one trophy that has eluded him?

Destiny or just another year?

While numbers and symbolism make for great narratives, IPL is won on the field, not in theories. Every season, RCB starts with hope, and every season, their fans are left heartbroken. Yet, this time, there is an added element of destiny—the 18th edition, Kohli’s 18, and possibly his last few seasons in the IPL.

If there was ever a time for RCB to rise, it is now. The ghosts of the past still linger, but cricket is a game of moments. If they can seize theirs, IPL 2025 might just be the year Bengaluru finally erupts in celebration. Will the number 18 bring luck, or will it just be another painful chapter in RCB’s history? The next few months will tell.

Amid the bustling pre-season preparations for the Indian Premier League, Karun Nair sat calmly in front of the media, clad in the blue and red of Delhi Capitals jersey. His demeanor was composed, his responses measured, and his eyes carried the quiet intensity of a man who had seen both the soaring highs and humbling lows of cricket.

Karun’s career has been one of stark contrasts. He became only the second Indian to score a triple century in Test cricket, an achievement that should have cemented his place in the national team. However, fate had other plans, and the doors to the Indian team seemed to close sooner than expected. Yet, the weight of being in and out of contention never crushed his spirit. IPL 2025 | From forgotten to formidable: Karun Nair lets his bat do the talking

At 36, Mohit Sharma is not just another fast bowler trying to extend his career—he is a seasoned warrior, a quiet enforcer, and a man who has seen every high and low the game has to offer. When he came for the pre-season interactions with Delhi Capitals, he carried with him the same warm smile that has been his signature for years. He greeted everyone with respect, exchanged laughs, and exuded an easy-going charm that made even the most intense cricket discussions feel like casual banter. But behind that ever-present smile lies an unrelenting spirit, one that refuses to fade away.

Mohit’s journey in cricket has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. From being a key player in Chennai Super Kings’ dominant era to an IPL Purple Cap winner, then battling injuries and setbacks, and finally making a roaring comeback with Gujarat Titans—he has lived through every possible phase of a cricketer’s life. Now, as he dons the Delhi Capitals jersey, the hunger remains the same, but the wisdom he brings to the team is even greater.

His approach to preparation is methodical yet adaptive. “I am preparing myself overall, to be honest. I am taking care of my body, bowling with both the new ball and the old ball, and making sure I am ready for any situation,” he shared. For a format as volatile as T20, adaptability is everything, and Mohit has mastered the art of reinventing himself time and again.

One of the key aspects of his game has been his ability to handle setbacks with grace. He has never been one to dwell on losses or bask too long in victories. Even when asked about one of the most heartbreaking moments of his career—the 2023 IPL final, where a couple of crucial deliveries changed the game—his response was one of acceptance and perspective. “I believe in destiny. If something good happens, I move forward. If something bad happens, I go back to the nets,” he said, shrugging off any lingering regrets.

Delhi Capitals will look to tap into this experience, especially with a bowling attack that features both young firepower and experienced campaigners. The presence of a veteran like Mohit Sharma in the dressing room will undoubtedly be invaluable, not just for his skill but for the calmness and clarity he brings. “In T20s, you will get hit. If you are afraid of getting hit for sixes, you won’t take wickets,” he says with a smile, emphasising the importance of courage in high-pressure situations.

'Starc will bring great value to team'

A crucial addition to this IPL season will be Mitchell Starc, a bowler Mohit Sharma deeply respects. When asked about the Australian speedster’s impact, Mohit was candid in his admiration. “Experience matters a lot in T20s, not just in terms of performance but in learning. Having someone like Starc in the mix brings great value to the team. We have all taken hits in this format, but it’s about bouncing back. Starc's ability to deliver in crunch moments will be crucial for us.”

Mohit also acknowledges the role of great mentors in his career, particularly his time under MS Dhoni and Ashish Nehra. Now, as he steps into a new environment, he brings with him the lessons of leadership, patience, and resilience. Having been a part of IPL for over a decade, he understands that reputations mean little—execution on the field is everything.

As Delhi Capitals prepare for the upcoming IPL season, Mohit Sharma remains a fascinating subplot in their campaign. Will he once again prove his mettle and script another chapter in his storied career? If his past is any indication, the answer lies in the same smile that never leaves his face—one that says he’s ready for whatever comes next.

Also Read: Massive boost for Rajasthan Royals as star Indian duo joins squad ahead of IPL 2025 One of the key aspects of his game has been his ability to handle setbacks with grace. 'Starc will bring great value to team' A crucial addition to this IPL season will be Mitchell Starc, a bowler Mohit Sharma deeply respects. When asked about the Australian speedster’s impact, Mohit was candid in his admiration. “Experience matters a lot in T20s, not just in terms of performance but in learning. Having someone like Starc in the mix brings great value to the team. We have all taken hits in this format, but it’s about bouncing back. Starc's ability to deliver in crunch moments will be crucial for us.” Mohit also acknowledges the role of great mentors in his career, particularly his time under MS Dhoni and Ashish Nehra.

Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, India’s wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul looked back on last year’s auction and shared his excitement about joining Delhi Capitals.

Rahul, who captained Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the past three seasons, was released by the franchise ahead of the auction. Delhi Capitals secured his services for $1 million (₹14 crore) after parting ways with their star wicketkeeper-batter and captain, Rishabh Pant. However, Rahul will focus solely on wicketkeeping duties as Delhi has appointed Axar Patel as their new captain.

"The auction was a nerve-wracking experience," Rahul admitted while speaking to digital broacaster Star. "As a player, not knowing where you will end up is never easy. Over the years, I have seen how unpredictable auctions can be—there’s no set pattern. As a captain, I was involved in building a team, so I understand the pressure franchises face. But as a player, it's even tougher because your career is at stake."

Rahul acknowledged that auctions could shape a player's future or bring unexpected challenges. "I was nervous, even a little anxious. But at the same time, I knew this was the right step for my career. There was excitement, though it didn’t last long because reality set in quickly. I’m really happy to join Delhi Capitals. Parth Jindal, the team’s owner, is a close friend, and we’ve had many discussions about cricket beyond the field. Former England cricketer Moeen Ali has criticised the current state of One Day International (ODI) cricket, calling it the 'worst format to play' due to rule changes that have made it overly favorable for batters. Speaking to Talksport Cricket, as quoted by Wisden, Moeen argued that ODIs have 'completely died' outside of the ICC Cricket World Cup and the Champions Trophy. England's recent struggles in ODIs add weight to his comments. They endured a disastrous ICC Cricket World Cup title defense in 2023, winning just three out of nine matches. While they managed to qualify for the Champions Trophy, their campaign ended without a single victory in three games. Rejected in the Indian Premier League (IPL), India’s domestic star Anmolpreet Singh broke Yusuf Pathan’s record for the fastest domestic hundred on Saturday (Dec 21) in List A Cricket (India’s domestic 50-over competition). The 35-ball ton saw him break the 14-year record after being snubbed by IPL franchises in the auctions in November. Courtesy of the score, Punjab beat Arunachal Pradesh by nine wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium A Ground in Ahmedabad. Anmolpreet breaks Pathan’s record Known for his devastating batting approach, Anmolpreet’s snub in IPL came as a surprise for many as he represented the likes of Mumbai Indians and SunRisers Hyderabad in the past. He went on a rampage in the white-ball contest on Saturday as Punjab chased down a 165-run target in just 12.5 overs. Riding on Anmolpreet’s brilliant knock, Punjab were scoring at a rate of 13 runs per over. In his innings, the 26-year-old scored 9 sixes and 12 fours with 104 runs coming in boundaries from his 115-run knock. He was given a good helping hand by Prabhsimran Singh as he remained unbeaten on 35 off 25 while skipper Abhishek Sharma departed for 10 off 7. All Arunachal Pradesh bowlers were expensive with the lowest economy of 9.5. Earlier the record was held by Yusuf when he hit the century in 40 balls while representing Baroda in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He was at the peak of his powers in the 2010s when he also won the ODI World Cup with the Indian team. He was part of the side under MS Dhoni with Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli being the notable names on the list.

The Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) mega auction concluded on Monday (Nov 25) with 182 players added to the roster of 10 teams as record money was spent in the two-day bidding event in Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah. A combined INR 6.39 billion ($76mn) was spent on the players as Rishabh Pant emerged as the most expensive buy for a record fee of INR 270mn ($3.2mn). Franchises also showed interest in uncapped players while some big names were ignored. Here are some key takeaways from the IPL 2025 mega auction as the countdown begins for the richest league in the world.

Indian players top the shopping list

Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins were the two most expensive purchases in the IPL 2024 mini-auction, but that was not the case this time. All 10 franchises were focused on bringing in Indian names, highlighting the value of homegrown talent. With Pant leading the charge, no foreign player features in the top five most expensive players bought in the IPL 2025 auction. Shreyas Iyer was sold for INR 260.75mn ($3.1mn) to Punjab Kings, followed by Venkatesh Iyer, who returned to Kolkata Knight Riders for 237.75mn ($2.8mn).

IPL 2025 mega auction to take place in Saudi Arabia's Jeddah on November 24, 25

England Test captain and star all-rounder Ben Stokes might skip IPL 2025 to prioritise the upcoming heavy Test season, per the reports in the British media. Stokes is said to lead the bunch of English players who are undecided over their participation in the cash-rich league for two reasons mainly – first, considering the Tests workload and, secondly, for BCCI’s latest policy of banning players who decide to leave the campaign midway for international commitments.

Stokes last played in the IPL two years ago in 2022, wherein he represented Chennai Super Kings (CSK), though he featured in just a handful of matches and was benched for most of the season due to an injury. The left-handed batter missed last season to work on his fitness and manage his workload.

Per a report in The Telegraph, Stokes, alongside several first-team Test players, could see themselves opting out from registering their names in the auction list, the deadline of which is Sunday (November 3).

Meanwhile, the Stokes-led England Test team will host India for five Tests at home this summer before flying Down Under for the away Ashes, a top-tier series England is dearly preparing for a long time. For the Poms, the fitness and availability of express pace bowlers like Mark Wood and Jofra Archer are of the highest importance, and considering the tight schedule, both might join Stokes in avoiding putting their names for IPL 2025.

BCCI’s new policy adds salt to injury

Before the Indian Cricket Board and the IPL decided on launching a policy of barring players from leaving the season midway unless for health and unavoidable reasons, several overseas players over the years, English mainly, used to play for half a season or 3/4th before leaving their IPL teams for international duty.

Like last season, Rajasthan Royals’ star batter Jos Buttler and Kolkata Knight Riders’ Phil Salt left before the Playoffs, much to the frustration of their teams.

Now, with the new rule in play, none of the overseas players can do so; what they can do here is not put their name in the auction should they not commit to playing the whole season.

Besides, those who would not put their names in this year’s auction will be banned from IPL auctions for the next two years.

Meanwhile, Stokes was in the news recently for a robbery at his house in the UK when he was away playing in Pakistan. A gang of masked men broke into his home on October 17, when Stokes was busy playing the second Test in Multan. Besides taking away precious items like jewellery, the thieves also stole several valuable possessions from his house.

One person has been arrested in this matter.
