It will be an interesting next few days for Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant as he contemplates his international return ahead of the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies in June. Former Australia captain and Delhi Capitals’ coach Ricky Ponting has backed Pant to make the India squad for the T20 World Cup. Speaking exclusively to WION, Ponting backed Pant ahead of Sanju Samson and Dinesh Karthik, who have been in great form for their Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises.

Ponting backs Pant’s selection for World Cup

“No doubt that Pant should make India T20 World Cup squad. Great to see him back and he is playing well. He is too dynamic of a player to not make the India squad,” Ponting said in an exclusive chat with WION’s Nikhil Mathur on Monday.

Pant has so far endured a mixed return to the IPL after being injured in a near-fatal car accident in December 2022. He returned to the IPL with DC this season and has so far scored 254 runs in eight matches at the IPL. He now faces tough competition to be back in the Indian team as multiple players fight for a place.

KL Rahul and Sanju Samson are in the pole position to make the T20 World Cup squad, while Ishan Kishan (despite contract issues) and Dinesh Karthik are also in the fray to make the Indian team for the T20 World Cup.

Ponting on DC’s playoff chances

Ponting also spoke on the team’s chances of reaching the playoffs of the IPL 2024, conceding they will have to win every game remaining. DC have so far won three matches and lost five, which sees them languish at the 8th spot in the IPL 2024 standings.

“Every game is a must-win from now on. Our best is good enough but we haven't been good across the 40 overs. We were a bit jinxed at the beginning of the season. Harry Brook didn't turn up, marsh got injured. Mukesh and Kuldeep missed a few games. No excuses now,” added the DC coach ahead of the Gujarat Titans clash.

DC are next in action on Wednesday (April 24) when they take on Gujarat Titans (GT) in their second clash at traditional home Arun Jaitley Stadium. DC were beaten in their last home match by SunRisers Hyderabad by 68 runs on Saturday and will look to get back to winning ways on Wednesday.

Exclusive: He should make India T20 WC squad - Ricky Ponting backs Rishabh Pant for international return

Far from the hue and cry of the high-scoring thrillers that have dominated the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday (Apr 21) played a slow-burner of a game that went down to the wire at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur.

Ultimately, it took some intelligent batting from the GT lower-order batters to walk away with a well-fought three-wicket win. Rahul Tewatia and former PBKS batter Shahrukh Khan combined at the death to engineer a crafty 35-run partnership to see the chase through. The chase would seem sweeter as it came after GT were humbled at their home by Delhi Capitals, just a few days back. The Titans were folded on a paltry score of 89 as DC chased it within 10 overs. As for the hosts, the Kings were in the chase, up until the 18th over where Kagiso Rabada went for 20 runs, as Sam Curran's inexperience with the captain's armband showed. Harshal Patel did attempt to spice things up with two wickets in the penultimate over but GT kept their cool. The duo completed a fifty-run stand in the sixth over before Mohit Sharma drew the first blood and sent Prabhsimran packing as Wriddhiman Saha snaffled a smart catch. Riley Rossouw's miserable return with the bat continued as Noor Ahmad trapped him in front of the stumps. The other Afghan, Rashid Khan, joined the party and similarly caught Curran plumb. On both occasions, the on-field decision was not out and GT had to go upstairs to have them reversed. Mohit Sharma also chipped in with a couple of wickets, ensuring that PBKS finished with an under-par total on what was a sluggish track. The win has catapulted GT to sixth spot on the table, just behind Chennai Super Kings and Luck Super Giants, albeit, they both have a game in hand.

IPL 2024: GT bounce back after chastening defeat at home, beat PBKS by 3 wickets

With stardom comes speculations, and Suresh Raina has faced the brunt of it. India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend Raina addressed the long-pending rumour surrounding his absence from IPL 2020 (in the UAE). While several reports suggested he got into a rift with the team management over not getting a balcony room, Raina rubbished all those reports, saying the reality was something else.

In a tell-all interview with Lallantop, Raina revealed the real reason behind opting against playing for CSK that season. Squashing all the rubbish reports of not playing because of not getting the balcony room, Raina said due to bereavement in his family, he remained unavailable for selection and left the bio-bubble to be with his near and dear ones.

“There was bereavement in the family. In my uncle's family, there were deaths. A group of gangsters killed the entire family. It happened in Pathankot."

“So, I went there. But there was a bio-bubble in the IPL, where you couldn't return. My father was very upset."

“When the Kachche gang did what they did, my entire family was under stress. I thought cricket came next; I could play anytime; first, my family was important,” Raina revealed.

‘Family comes first’

Speaking further on this, Raina said he did tell MS Dhoni and the team management, as everyone was on the same page on why he headed home, remaining unavailable for selection for the complete season.

“Yes, I told this to MS Dhoni and the team management,” Raina continued. “Family comes first.”

However, upon his return to the franchise the next season in 2021, Chennai beat Kolkata in the final to win the IPL trophy for the fourth time. That edition was also Raina’s last season in the cash-rich league before announcing his retirement.

"Then I returned, we played the 2021 season. We won the trophy,” he said. "But the previous year, the family was in chaos. They were all in depression already due to Covid-19 and then this happened."

"I thought I should go home and be with my family,” Raina added.

The left-handed batter Raina added that considering the condition worldwide because of the COVID-19 virus, he couldn’t return to the setup because he had to be in a bio bubble for two weeks, so he decided to skip that season.

“Definitely (on the statement that bio-bubbles weren't safe). The virus was everywhere. Everybody was getting tested for Covid-19. Everybody was getting tested every day.”

“I couldn't go back because of the bio-security bubble. You have to be in isolation for 15 days before coming back. After that, you have to be tested. So I had to be in the hotel for 30 days. So, I thought it was not practical,” Raina added.

India captain and a five-time champion with Mumbai Indians, Rohit Sharma, has come out publicly calling out the ‘Impact Player rule’ in the IPL as something that is taking away a lot from the game or just a little excitement. A former MI skipper is the first high-profile player to admit that ‘he doesn’t like’ this new rule introduced the previous season.

Impact Rule in the IPL helps teams to bring in a 12th player at any time during the game, substituting with the player of their selection - a rule somewhat similar to Super-Sub introduced and later removed from international cricket during the mid-2000s.

Rohit feels this rule has cut down the impact of all-rounders in the game, arguing that it holds back their development, as this game is played with 11 players, and not 12, at the international level.

“I generally feel that it is going to hold back [development of all-rounders] because eventually cricket is played by 11 players, not 12 players," Rohit said on the Club Prairie Podcast, co-hosted by Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan.

“I'm not a big fan of impact player (rule). You are taking out so much from the game just to make it a little entertainment for the people around.

“But if you look [at] genuinely just cricketing aspect of it…. I can give you so many examples - guys like Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube are not getting to bowl, which for us [India team] is not a good thing,” the India captain continued.

His comments come weeks before the 15-man squad selection for the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA, starting June 1. While Shivam Dube has knocked on the selectors’ doors with his stellar performances this season (playing for CSK), he still hasn’t bowled this IPL season.

It mounts pressure on the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee that is contemplating naming Hardik Pandya on the team sheet for the marquee event only because he hasn’t bowled enough in IPL 2024.

Moreover, spin-bowling all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel are other names discussed for the 20-team-tournament.

What’s the solution?

Although he is Rohit is criticising the new rule, he said he doesn’t have a solution for its substitute.

“I don't know what you can do about it, but I'm not a fan of it, honestly speaking,” he said.

"Because there's obviously 12 players for you to select from and whoever that impact player is, you can see how the game is going and change it later depending on what you need, what pitch is behaving.

“If you bat well if you don't lose wickets, you can add another bowler, so it gives you an option of having six or seven bowlers. You don't need that extra batter because a lot of the teams actually upfront are batting well, and then you hardly see Nos. 7 or 8 coming to bat,” the MI great concluded.

IPL 2024: Rohit Sharma ‘not a fan’ of Impact Rule, says 'you are taking out so much from the game...'

Australians delivering on the big stage is something the cricketing world is familiar with. Youngster Jake Fraser-McGurk, debuting for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024, left an impression on everyone in his first game with a match-winning fifty against Lucknow Super Giants. The right-handed batter smoked five sixes and two fours in his 35-ball 55-run stay at the crease, helping Delhi clinch a six-wicket win at the Ekana Stadium.

His inclusion in the XI came as a wonder call for the struggling side, as they looked composed yet hungry for the win during the run chase. Having been roped in by DC as someone who plays attacking cricket upfront, Jake had a night to remember as he made it to an elite list of Delhi players with the highest score on debut. Although he admitted being anxious ahead of his IPL debut, Jake said he had not seen anything like IPL before.

His 77-run stand with DC Captain Rishabh Pant came in handy for the side as they remained ahead in the chase after losing openers inside the Powerplay.

Speaking on his knock and his favourite shot of the day, Jake said, “I loved that one over cover. I don't usually hit that many on the offside, so. I think it's something that I'll continue to learn to do—batting more out of the powerplay, focusing on my strike rate, and rotating the strike as well. I believe it's a skill that will come with experience, and playing more games will definitely aid in that."

Jake Fraser-McGurk cherishes DC debut, says ‘I am thrilled to be here, never seen anything like IPL before’

Hardik Pandya has suffered enough wrath from fans for his appointment as Mumbai Indians captain in place of Rohit Sharma ahead of the 2024 season. His IPL teammate Ishan Kishan says it’s about time before he wins over them with his performance. The management’s call to remove Rohit and name Pandya as the new skipper irked the fan base with the crowd booing Hardik at every stadium he plays at.

Even at his home venue – the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the fans continued booing him while he walked out to bat against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) the other night. Pandya played a handy cameo coming in at four to win the game for the hosts, their second in five contested matches thus far.

Reflecting on fans turning on Pandya, mainly for how he took over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma, Kishan said having spent a lot of time with Pandya, he must be enjoying this as a challenge, knowing he can turn this around with his performance this season.

“He [Hardik] loves challenges, he has been in this situation before and he is in that situation right now," Kishan said. “He is not someone who will come out and talk about it and say let's stop this or that. I know that he must be enjoying it. I know him personally.

“I have spent a lot of time with him. He is ready for the challenges because you cannot complain to the fans, they will come up with their explanations and their point of view,” Kishan added.

The young left-handed batter said Pandya would take positives out of this situation, and bring in his A-game to get the trust of fans back and accept him as Mumbai Indians’ captain.

Fans will love, accept Pandya as MI captain

"Knowing how Hardik Pandya thinks, he is happy with people doing it but I know that in the coming games, he will do it with the bat and people will start loving him [again]. People also recognise your hard work, and what you are going through and still you are doing so well for your team.

"Our fans will be a little harsh on you but at the same time when you do well, or when you show that it is [still] not bothering you and [that] you are in a good headspace, that might change. If not today, tomorrow. If not tomorrow, the day after tomorrow,” Kishan concluded.

Meanwhile, with two successive wins, Mumbai has climbed to the seventh spot on the points table.

They next face Chennai Super Kings in the home game on Sunday (April 14) evening.

ALSO READ: IPL 2024: Ishan Kishan opens up on taking ‘break from cricket’ and T20 WC spot, says ‘it’s not in my hands’ “He [Hardik] loves challenges, he has been in this situation before and he is in that situation right now," Kishan said. Fans will love, accept Pandya as MI captain "Knowing how Hardik Pandya thinks, he is happy with people doing it but I know that in the coming games, he will do it with the bat and people will start loving him [again].

MI vs RCB Live Score, Match 25, IPL 2024: What do the captains have to say?

Hardik Pandya (MI captain): We will bowl first. It looks like a similar track, but it might get better to bat on under lights. There was a bit of dew as well, so chasing could be a better option.

The mood before and after the win was different, we'll need to start well, put the pressure and then take the game forward. We got the highest score without anyone getting to 50, that gives you plenty of confidence. Bowling well in the powerplay was crucial. One change - Shreyas Gopal comes in place of PC

Faf du Plessis (RCB captain): We've tried to change things, so we've given chances to some of our players, some new players and it's up to them to take the opportunity. It's important to give players a decent run, but we've found ourselves in a stage where we haven't done well, so it's time to make changes.

One thing that's important is to be consistent and that's where we've been disappointing. But we know we can turn this around. We would have fielded as well, chasing at this ground is the better option, but the pitch looks good. We've got three changes - Jacks debuts and he'll come in at 3, Mahipal and Vyshak are back.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS, IPL 2024, MI v RCB: MI crush RCB at Wankhede by 7 wickets

Injured Lucknow Super Giants seamer Mayank Yadav will miss his side's next two matches, head coach Justin Langer confirmed ahead of Delhi Capitals clash in IPL 2024. Yadav, who turned heads with his searing pace clubbed with wicket-taking line and length, bowled just one over against Gujarat Titans in his last game before leaving the field.

Speaking to the media, Langer confirmed that Mayank suffered stiffness in his hip in the lead-up to the game, and upon delivering his first over, he was taken out. Right after the game, he underwent required tests, with reports suggesting the seamer suffered 'soreness in lower abdominal' and will be rested on precautionary grounds.

"He felt a little bit of tightness at the top of his hip leading into the last game, but that was about a one-out-of-ten pain, and we thought that there were clinical signs," Langer said in a pre-match presser on Thursday.

"Everything through the doctors and the physios seemed perfectly okay. He bowled that first over [against Titans] and started feeling something in his hip.

"But we had an MRI scan, and there is a very, very small swelling in there. So we are very hopeful he'll start building himself up and be back bowling again soon," the head coach added.

Mayank to be ready for CSK tie

With Lucknow hosting Delhi on Friday (April 12) and then travelling to Kolkata to face KKR just two days later, Langer said such tight scheduling made it tougher for the India seamer to recover and get ready for that match.

He, however, pointed out that the game against Chennai Super Kings (on April 19) could see Mayank's return to the field.

"That's the plan [to have Mayank fit for the match against Chennai Super Kings on April 19]. We want him to play every game if possible," Langer said.

"But he'll be working towards it; he's working very hard every day to be ready for whatever our next game is. He won't play tomorrow; it's unlikely... with the very short turnaround, it's unlikely that he plays these two games. But he's certainly working towards playing whenever he possibly can," he continued.

Meanwhile, Mayank made headlines on his IPL debut against Punjab Kings in the home game, picking three for 27 in his four overs, helping his team win a crunch tie. His next outing against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru saw him pick as many wickets and the Player of the Match award for the second successive game.

India pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah has revealed that he was planning to move to Canada for better opportunities before the big break with Mumbai Indians (MI) came his way. Bumrah said he might have tried for the national team there had he moved to the country.

The revelation was made as Bumrah's wife and presenter Sanjana Ganesan posed the question to him during an interview segment.

Former Australian cricketer Brad Hogg believes Rajasthan Royals (RR) batter Riyan Parag had a 'bit of ego' last year which hindered his performances. Despite last year's failures, Parag has come back strong in the 2024 season with the ex-wrist spinner lauding him for the maturity displayed.

The right-hand dasher has been pushed up the order at no. 4 by the RR thinktank this year and the results have been there to see. Parag has single-handedly helped RR maintain an unbeaten start to the season.

"I am really liking when I am seeing young (Riyan) Parag. I think he has really matured this year. I don't say this disrespectfully but I think he had a bit of ego last year," said Hogg on a NDTV podcast.

"The ego is still there but it is in control. He believes in himself and he is now more worried about what he can do for the team rather than trying to seal his place in the team," he added.

In four matches so far, Parag has amassed 185 runs at an astounding average of 92.50 and a strike rate of 158.11. He has already donned the Orange Cap once and remains firmly in contention to secure it by the end of the tournament.

The meeting of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners called by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been postponed, according to a report in Cricbuzz.

The meeting of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners called by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been postponed, according to a report in Cricbuzz. It was scheduled for April 16 in the western city of Ahmedabad but the BCCI delayed it in view of a change in the IPL programme. The plan earlier was to hold the meeting on the sidelines of the match between Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals in Ahmedabad on April 16. However, since then, the match has been postponed to April 17 while the Kolkata Knight Riders vs Rajasthan Royals match has been preponed to April 16 due to Ram Navami festivities in Kolkata. The popular Hindu festival is celebrated widely across the country and BCCI received input from security agencies that they will not be able to provide proper security arrangements at the venues. Hence, the schedule, released under the second phase, was altered. The meeting has been called to discuss the future of IPL, starting next year, as the franchises go into the mega-auction to rebuild their teams. BCCI wants to understand the grievances of the owners especially concerning the number of retentions to be permitted and the size of the player purse. Also read | IPL 2024: BCCI announces rescheduling of KKR vs RR, GT vs DC matches. Check details RTM to make a comeback? In a boost to all IPL teams, irrespective of whether the BCCI agrees on increasing the number of retentions, there are talks of reintroducing the Right to Match (RTM) card in the upcoming mega auction, which was missing from the last one held in 2022. During that time, only three Indians and one overseas player were part of this scheme. A section of IPL owners are of the view that there should be more RTM options as it is based on market value and transparency. As for retention, owners believe that it could potentially lead to surrogate and covert payments to the players. Also read | BCCI, IPL team owners to meet in Ahmedabad to discuss ‘league’s future’ Besides, the budget limit for each team (the cap is INR 100 crore) to be allotted will also be part of the discussion, which, as per multiple reports, will be raised from next year onwards. Meeting to discuss IPL’s future with team owners postponed by BCCI

Delhi Capitals (DC) are at the bottom of the points table in IPL 2024. After five games, they have managed just one win and lost four. Thus, Rishabh Pant & Co. have to revamp at the earliest before they fall way behind the playoffs race. Amid all this, there are more miseries for the one-time finalists as star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out for at least one more week due to injury concerns. Marsh missed DC's previous game, versus Mumbai Indians (MI), where they lost by 29 runs, in a high-scoring contest, due to hamstring issues. Now, it seems he will miss a lot more games.

Pravin Amre, part of the DC coaching staff, shed light on Marsh's injury and said after his side's loss to MI, "A few of our players are injured, and the worrying sign is Mitch Marsh. He has gone for a scan, and the physios will give us a report in a week's time. Then we will come to know what the exact situation is. Whether he can (play the entire season) or not depends on the reports."

Marsh's unavailability is not only a concern for Pant-led Delhi camp but also for the Australian team, with the T20 World Cup 2024 edition to kickoff soon after the IPL. Marsh is likely to lead the one-time winners at the mega event, hence, his absence will be a huge blow.

Amre also opined that DC are struggling due to plenty of injury concerns. In this regard, he added, "We have to start winning but have been set back by a few injuries. In the first game, Ishant (Sharma) couldn't bowl two overs. Then Mukesh got injured. Kuldeep has not played three games. Marsh has a hamstring injury. They are our main players, and whoever comes (in for them), they are not as effective because it is like A players vs B players there."

DC will now lock horns with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in match 26 of IPL 2024 and will be desperate to add two points in their kitty.

The IPL match between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Saturday (Apr 6) was briefly halted due to a security breach when a fan entered the field and raced to Virat Kohli. The Indian batter was startled before he allowed the fan to hug him, albeit reluctantly. Afterwards, the stewards and security officials ran across the turf and escorted the fan out of the playing arena. The police immediately took control of the rogue fan and brought him to a hall inside the stadium. Upon being quizzed by the WION correspondent, the kid revealed his name as Munir Ali, 14, hailing from Bihar's Araria district. Ali revealed he was working in Delhi's Ghazipur market and that he arrived in Jaipur on Friday (Apr 6). The kid said he was approached by a guy named Shubham outside the stadium premises who said he was black-marketing the tickets. Excited to watch his 'idol' Virat Kohli play, Ali said he splurged Rs 1,900 ($23) to buy the ticket and was later guided to the frisking zone by Shubham who immediately left the spot. After the initial interrogation, Ali was taken to the police station where officers said "he would be further interrogated". Notably, Ali did not have the ticket on him at the time he was caught and gave Shubham's contact number to the authorities. A video later shared on social media showed that the fan was beaten black and blue by the police officers. While WION cannot independently verify the authenticity of the video, the repeated instances of fans haring across the playing field have raised serious concerns over the security measures in the stadiums. The Indian batter looked assured from the beginning and carried his bat through even though other batters failed to build sustained partnerships with him. The result of a lone battle from Kohli meant RCB finished with a below-par total of 183. Chasing the target, RR were off to a poor start as Yashasvi Jaiswal departed without opening the scoring. However, Jos Buttler finally returned to form and alongside skipper Sanju Samson, killed the game with an incredible 148-run partnership. RR ultimately won the contest by six wickets with five balls to spare and continued their unbeaten start to the campaign. Meanwhile, RCB suffered their fourth defeat on the bounce.

A decade since its last edition, the Champions League T20, fondly known as CLT20 among cricket fans, could be back, Nick Cummins - Cricket Victoria CEO, hinted. The game’s three biggest boards – the BCCI, ECB and CA, have begun talks on bringing back the competition, which Nick feels was ahead of its time. However, the only challenge is to find a window for this.

Cummins said the T20 landscape wasn’t mature 10 years ago, but now it is, adding, for the first time, a CLT20 for women could also be introduced.

"I think the Champions League was ahead of its time. The T20 landscape wasn't mature enough at that point. I think it is now," Cummins said on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai on Tuesday.

"I know that there's an active conversation between Cricket Australia, the ECB, and the BCCI about the Champions League."

"It's just trying to find a window as to when you actually play that because you've also got all the ICC tournaments as well. It may be that the first iteration of the Champions League will be of the women… [it may involve cricketers playing in] the WPL, the Hundred and the WBBL,” Cummins added.

Meanwhile, the introduction of CLT20 raised quite a few eyebrows back in the day, with six editions from 2009 to 2014 being successfully held, four times in India and twice in South Africa. The Indian Premier League’s defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won the last edition against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Bengaluru in 2014.

At that time in the competition, three teams from India, two each from Australia and South Africa, and one each from Pakistan, West Indies and New Zealand were part of it.

While CSK and Mumbai Indians (MI) won the tournament twice, New South Wales and Sydney Sixers won it on the remaining two occasions.

Big 3 to decide CLT20 future

Cummins said he is in talks with Cricket Australia’s CEO Nick Hockley, with the BCCI secretary Jay Shah yet to have his say on this matter.

"I'm constantly talking to Nick Hockley, Cricket Australia CEO, for a Champions League, because I think it's pretty important to bring that back," Cummins said.

"There are talks about it. It's probably a question to ask Jay Shah. But certainly, from an Australian cricket perspective, we are very open to the idea of the Champions League. It's just about finding a window in the FTP, but I think that's the next step in the evolution of cricket,” he said.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday (Apr 2) announced the rescheduling of two Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. The fixtures between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals as well as Gujarat Titans vs Delhi Capitals have been rescheduled, BCCI informed in a media release.

The KKR vs RR fixture will now take place on April 16 instead of the previous date viz. April 17 while the GT vs DC match has been pushed a day ahead, to be played on April 17 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Although BCCI didn't cite any reason for the changing of dates, reports suggest that the schedule change has been necessitated due to the Ram Navami festivities. The popular Hindu festival honours the birth of Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu and is celebrated with fervour across the country.

BCCI is aware that authorities are unsure of providing adequate security for the IPL match, that too at night. Additionally, the country will be witnessing the general elections later this month, so the security apparatus will be diverted to other departments, leaving little wiggle room for IPL security.

IPL 2024: BCCI announces rescheduling of KKR vs RR, GT vs DC matches. Check details

Much to everyone’s cheeriness, India star Virat Kohli will play the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA, starting June 1, hints an unnamed BCCI official. Contrary to earlier reports of selectors looking beyond Kohli for the 20-team-tournament mainly for his under-par strike rate, a board member assured fans of not worrying too much about it, saying the selectors don’t go by social media memes.

The India and RCB star batter is in top-notch form in the ongoing IPL 2024, leading the runs chart with 181 runs in three matches, striking at 141.4, slightly better than his strike rate in T20Is (138.16). Having scored two fifties thus far, the selectors back him to continue his golden touch while trying to improve his attacking rate.

With the T20 World Cup squad expected to be announced by the end of April, Kohli has ample time and games at hand to work on those aspects, pressing his sure-shot case for a slot in the team for the marquee event. The right-handed batter averages over 50 (51.76) in the shorter format playing for India, having amassed 4037 runs in 109 innings.

"See, it is just the beginning (of the league) and Kohli has started fine. He will improve his strike rate as well in the coming matches. As far as I personally feel, he will make it (to the World Cup squad). Selectors don't go by social media memes. Cricket is played on the field not on social media platforms," the BCCI official, on condition of anonymity, said, as quoted by IANS.

All eyes on India’s T20 WC squad

Following the heartbreaking loss at last year’s 50-over World Cup final at the hands of Australia, the Men in Blue will aim to get back by winning the T20 WC later this year.

While Captain Rohit Sharma and rookie Yashasvi Jaiswal are sure to be openers for the event, Kohli will stick to his usual number three slot. Suryakumar Yadav will play at four. SKY, as most fans call him, has been out of action since December last year, and is due to return to appear for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024.

For the middle order, India has plenty of options to look at, ranging from Hardik Pandya to Rinku Singh to Shivam Dube to Tilak Varma. The question mark around the wicketkeepers is also there, with several players back in reckoning for selection.

Getting to the bowling department, India is sure to pick Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav, while the remaining spots will be up for grabs.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has written to all 10 Indian Premier League (IPL) owners for a meeting scheduled to take place in Ahmedabad on April 16. On that day, the home side Gujarat Titans will host Delhi Capitals at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Although the agenda behind this meeting is unclear, the latest reports suggest it’s to discuss the future of the cash-rich league considering next year’s mega auction.

The IPL team owners will be accompanied by their CEOs and operational teams to address significant issues surrounding IPL’s future. BCCI president Roger Binny, secretary Jay Shah and IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal will also attend the meeting.

As per the sources, several policy-related decisions concerning the mega-auction scheduled next year will be part of the discussion.

"They will discuss the way forward for the IPL," said a source familiar with the matter.

The reports add that deciding the number of players to be retained will remain the focal point, with BCCI wanting every party involved to be on the same page. Several team owners want the number of retentions to be increased since most teams have established their name, brand and fan base.

While one group of owners is asking the board to agree on eight retentions going forward, the others are opposing it, asking for the number to be lower than that, putting them in a better position to go for the players listed in the auction.

Right to Match card to return

In a boost to all IPL teams, irrespective of whether the BCCI agrees on increasing the number of retentions, there are talks of reintroducing the Right to Match Card in the upcoming mega auction, which was missing from the last one held in 2022.

During that time, only three Indians and one overseas player were part of this scheme.

Besides, the budget limit for each team (the cap is INR 100 crore) to be allotted will also be part of it, which, per reports, will be raised from next year onwards.

BCCI, IPL team owners to meet in Ahmedabad to discuss ‘league’s future’

SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) will be without the services of their ace spinner Wanindu Hasaranga for the remainder of the IPL season, it has officially been confirmed. The spin-bowling all-rounder was initially supposed to join the SRH camp after the first few matches but the aggravation of his left-heel injury means he will miss the tournament.

According to a report in the Sunday Times (Sri Lanka), Hasaranga will travel to Dubai to meet a podiatrist for expert advice on managing the troubled heel. The procedure has been recommended by SLC's (Sri Lanka Cricket) physiotherapy department.

“He is not taking part in the IPL as he needs to do some rehabilitation after meeting the podiatrist,” SLC CEO Ashley de Silva was quoted as saying.

“There’s a swelling in the heel and he has been playing with injections. So he has decided to get this issue sorted out before the World Cup and informed us of his decision to skip the IPL this year.”

The news of Hasaranga missing out on the tournament comes when SRH face Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (Mar 31). While SRH have started the tournament decently, winning and losing one apiece, his absence would certainly be felt as the team had better balance with him in it.

IPL 2024: Blow to SRH as Wanindu Hasaranga gets ruled out of the tournament

Despite a captain's knock from Shikhar Dhawan (70), Punjab Kings (PBKS) suffered a 21-run defeat against home side Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Ekana Stadium on Saturday (Mar 20) evening. While the win was satisfying, it was the emergence of another young pacer, capable of bowling 150+ thunderbolts that must have delighted the LSG and Indian cricket fans alike.

Mayank Yadav, playing his debut IPL match, bowled the fastest ball of the tournament at 155.8 kmph before sending off Bairstow to the pavilion on the very next delivery. In the process, he broke the 102-run opening stand between the Englishman and Dhawan.

After Bairstow's departure, the PBKS innings never really recovered and Yadav was at the heart of it. His performance rejuvenated the LSG fielders who had been deflated by the pyrotechnics from the opening duo.

The blistering pace of the 21-year-old ensured that other bowlers took inspiration. Mohsin Khan took the big wickets of Dhawan and Sam Curran in consecutive deliveries which completely broke the PBKS spine.

In the end, the challenging target of 200 proved a little beyond the reach of PBKS's lower order. Afghan veteran Naveen-ul-Haq bowled the final few overs and ensured that LSG walked away with a win.

LSG's aggressive batting

Batting first, LSG could have easily scored anything above 220, if it wasn't for the starts thrown away by the batters. Quinton de Kock led the pack from the start and batted sensibly, reaching his 21st half-century. KL Rahul, who was not in the playing XI and brought in as an impact substitute, owing to the management wanting him to ease slowly following an injury setback, could not get going. He was the first to depart by smashing one straight to Bairstow at backward point.

Devdutt Padikkal's struggles in the middle continued and he fell prey to Sam Curran who was introduced in the final over of the powerplay for his second spell.

Despite the wickets, LSG never took the foot off the pedal. All-rounder Marcus Stoinis came in at No. 4 for a short intent-filled cameo and Pooran was always about keeping the run-rate turbo-charged. The West Indian took calculated risks to ensure the scoreboard was always moving.

Badoni struggled and with Rabada getting Pooran with four odd overs to go, it looked like PBKS could close this out very well but Krunal put on a brilliant display of finishing to give his bowlers a great chance.

Curran used the cutters to great effect. Arshdeep got the key wickets of KL and QdK. Kagiso Rabada and Rahul Chahar also chipped in with a wicket each but they were on the higher end of the economy rate.

IPL 2024: Lucknow Super Giants tame Punjab Kings at Ekana, secure first win of the season

Lucknow Super Giants will host Punjab Kings in their second game of IPL 2024 on Saturday (March 30). Both teams are entering this match having suffered defeats in their previous matches, with LSG losing their opener to Rajasthan Royals while Punjab going down in Bengaluru against RCB in their second tie. With the win and two points in mind, both teams will bring their A-game today. Here is the match preview and result prediction of the LSG vs PBKS match in IPL 2024.

Match Preview

Two teams yet to put their hands on the IPL trophy will be up against each other in a rare single match on Saturday. LSG, the hosts, will take a lot of positives from their season opener while trying to avoid making the same mistakes.

While their batting order consists of some mega stars, three of which are Englishmen – Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone and all-rounder Sam Curran, the fans can expect some exploits from the Indian talent Jitesh Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh.

Harpreet Brar is the bowler to look out for, while the seam duo of Arshdeep and Rabada will hold the keys with the new ball.

IPL 2024, Match 11: Lucknow Super Giants vs Punjab Kings - Match preview and result prediction

Former Australia and Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Steve Smith has made his choice of 'the complete side' of IPL 2024. While many have named Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as their top favourites, Smith believes Sanju Samson-led RR are the team to look out for in the ongoing edition. Smith, who led the one-time winners Rajasthan in IPL 2020, feels the 2022 finalists have enough firepower to claim their second title this year.

Speaking on Star Sports ahead of RR's home game versus Delhi Capitals (DC) on Thursday (March 28), Smith said, "Home teams are winning at the moment. I am not ready for them to break the trend just yet. They (RR) look the complete team this year. They have got all the bases covered. Their spinners, I'm really keen to watch again. Chahal and Ashwin are outstanding. The two guys up top are potentially the two most destructive in the IPL. If they get going and have an incredible season, they will be hard to beat."

Smith also opined on skipper Samson, who ended as the Player-of-the-Match with an impressive 52-ball 82 in RR's season-opener versus Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur on Sunday (March 24).

Over the years, Samson has been a huge name in the IPL and a regular for RR. However, he has had a tendency to start the season with a bang, with his willow, before fading away towards the end.

Smith feels that this could be something which is on Samson's mind but stated that the RR captain looks in a good space at the moment.

The Aussie cricketer added, "He played beautifully, got them the win. He seems to be playing well, looks to be in a very good place. He looks comfortable. He is striking the ball really well. I think his captaincy was outstanding and he would want to continue that form. His seasons in the past have tapered off a bit in the end, and that will be weighing on his mind. To keep that standard up and leading from the front."

RR started IPL 2024 with a 20-run win over Lucknow and will hope to make it two wins in a row on Thursday evening, when they host Rishabh Pant-led DC.

Under newly-appointed captain Pat Cummins, the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise will hope for a turnaround following the previous season, where they finished last on the points table. Playing their season-opener against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in an away clash on Saturday (March 23), SRH will walk out an experienced overseas contingent, including Travis Head, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen and Glenn Phillips. The 2016 IPL winner has nothing to lose but only to gain in the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League.

SRH's balance is what will keep them ahead of their contemporaries, having better Indian top-order players in their lineup in comparison to most teams. In their bowling department, SRH has enough firepower to keep every opponent silent on their day.

IPL 2024 Full Schedule - Final in Chepauk; Chennai, Ahmedabad to host playoffs

After splashing cash at the IPL auctions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will look to make winning start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign on Saturday (Mar 23). Mitchell Starc ($2.5 million) and Pat Cummins ($3 million) the two most expensive players in the history of the IPL will go head-to-head at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Both SRH and KKR had a disappointing outing in IPL 2023 and will look to put behind their woes to start on a winning note.

KKR vs SRH Preview

KKR will be back with a winning mojo having missed Shreyas Iyer in the IPL 2023 while the addition of Starc should be the perfect blend the franchise will look at. With the addition of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and the inclusion of season campaigners like Andre Russell and Sunil Narine KKR have a good chance to claim two points on Saturday.

On the other hand, SRH dropped curtains on IPL 2023 with four consecutive defeats and will look to put behind that run. The addition of new skipper Cummins and Travis Head along with Aiden Markram should give the necessary boost to the away side. SRH’s record against KKR isn’t that great and have won only nine times in 25 matches against two-time champions.

IPL 2024, Match 3, Kolkata Knight Riders vs Sunrisers Hyderabad: Match preview and result prediction

The second match of IPL 2024 will get underway at Punjab Kings’ new stadium in Chandigarh against their neighbouring rivals, Delhi Capitals, on Saturday (March 23). While Rishabh Pant’s return to competitive cricket after more than a year is set to make headlines, two teams beginning their new season with a common goal is what makes this contest mouth-watering. Here is the match preview and result prediction of the PBKS vs DC IPL game to be played.

Pant’s return to headline DC opener

Having survived a serious road accident in late 2022, ace India keeper-batter Rishabh Pant making his return to the cricket field will be a story in itself. The left-handed batter will captain the side in his first game since December 2022 and might keep wickets, going by their latest training session on the match eve.

Delhi’s top order will again hog all the limelight, with strong hitters like David Warner, Prithvi Shaw and Mitchell Marsh in their XI. While DC will need to address their missing firepower in the lower middle order, they need to pick between Jake Fraser-McGurk and Tristan Stubbs for their tournament opener.

In the absence of Anrich Nortje and Jhye Richardson for the game against PBKS, Delhi will need the local players to step up and deliver. Their all-rounder Axar Patel will again hold the keys in this crucial game.

All eyes on Bairstow, Rabada

The home side will begin the new season at their new home stadium in Mullanpur, whose square and straight boundaries are longer than in Mohali, where they just won one out of the six games played last season.

However, given the addition of the new rule, which now allows bowlers to bowl two bouncers per over, the PBKS seamers will enjoy their time in implementing it against hard-hitting DC batters.

With all eyes on the seam-bowling pair of Kagiso Rabada and Arshdeep Singh, Sam Curran and Harshal will also enjoy bowling their back-of-the-hand slower ones.

Meanwhile, the returning Jonny Bairstow will be the player to look out for.

Head-to-Head record

Of 32 matches played, both teams have won against each other 16 times.

Result Prediction

Punjab Kings might enter the contest with home support on their back, while Delhi, with a relatively balanced squad, will walk in as favourites.

Predicted Playing XIs –

PBKS - Shikhar Dhawan (c), Jonny Bairstow, Prabhsimran Singh, Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Shashank Singh, Sam Curran, Rahul Chahar, Harpreet Brar, Kagiso Rabada and Harshal Patel

Arshdeep Singh (Impact Player)

DC - David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant (c &wk), Tristan Stubbs, Abishek Porel, Axar Patel, Lalit Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, Ishant Sharma and Khaleel Ahmed

IPL 2024, Match 2, Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals: Match preview and result prediction

England and Punjab Kings all-rounder Liam Livingstone says the introduction of two bouncers per over rule in the IPL will bring balance to the game, resulting in excitement among cricketers and fans. Ahead of PBKS’ season opener against Delhi Capitals at their new home ground in Chandigarh on Saturday (March 23), Livingstone feels the vibe and said the team held several practice sessions at the new stadium to get used to the conditions.

"It's a new stadium. We've had 5-6 training sessions to get used to the conditions here. We retained most of our players from last season, and everyone's excited for the challenges that lie ahead of us,” Livingstone said during the pre-game presser in Chandigarh.

Speaking on the positives from the last season despite Punjab failing to seal the playoffs spot, Liam said the team remained in contention for the top-four finish until the last few games and aims to improve this season to ensure they are among the top teams on the points table.

"We did a lot of good things last season. We were in the running for a playoff spot until the last couple of games. We've got a really good squad, and the team environment is great. We'll certainly look to improve our performance this season,” the star all-rounder added.

Liam said the team plans to enjoy their time in the middle, with a solid aim of doing most things correctly and falling on the right side of results this season.

"We'll be looking to have a lot of fun and enjoy ourselves on the park and step up in the big moments. We should deal with the pressure moments well, and hopefully, we'll come up on the right side more times than not,” Livingstone noted.

2 bouncers rule will help bring balance

The addition of two bouncers per over rule will benefit the balance of the game, feels Liam, who admits the level of excitement will only improve following the implication of this rule.

"I think it'll be good to have two bouncers available. The bowlers have complained a lot over the years that everything is in the batters' favour, so they've got something in their favour now. It'll be interesting to see how it goes,” Livingstone said.
