Cricket multi-millionaire Chris Morris has said that&nbsp;he wants to follow in his father's footsteps by playing for the South African province that dad Willie represented for 12 seasons.

Morris, 33, will play for the Rajasthan Royals in the 2021 Indian Premier League after the franchise bought him for US$2.2-million, an IPL auction record.&nbsp;

His projected fee will take him past $8-million in earnings from the IPL alone.

It is a different cricketing world from that in which Willie Morris played for what was then known as Northern Transvaal between 1979/80 and 1991/92.

Willie played in an era when cricket in South Africa was taking its first tentative steps towards professionalism.&nbsp;

"Cricketers still needed to have full-time jobs and would go to net practice after a long day in the office," said Chris.

Northern Transvaal had an unusual payment scheme, according to Lee Barnard, who captained Willie Morris for part of his career.&nbsp;

"Batsmen only got paid if they scored at least 25 runs. More guys got out between 21 and 24 than in the whole history of cricket. Bowlers had to meet targets. One player had such a poor season that he couldn’t even pay his laundry bills."

Chris Morris said that cricket had been his life because of his father.&nbsp;

"I always say I was born with a bat in my hand. He would come back from a long day at work and still have the energy to throw balls at me."

South Africa will be scrapping its current franchise system next season and will return to an interprovincial set-up similar to that in which Willie Morris played.&nbsp;

<h2>- IPL 'big surprise' -</h2>

The only big difference is that the province is now known as Northerns, with the name Transvaal having been dropped after the end of apartheid in South Africa.

"I’m quite excited for the new 15-province thing," said Chris.&nbsp;

"If I get the opportunity to play at Centurion for Northerns and follow in Willie’s footsteps that will be quite cool."

Morris said his IPL record signing "came as a very big surprise".&nbsp;

After being released by Royal Challengers Bangalore last year, he wasn't even sure that another franchise would want his brand of aggressive batting, fast bowling and agile fielding.

"I don't think anyone in the cricket fraternity thought cricket would ever pay this well. In the past cricket couldn't set you up for the rest of your life.&nbsp;

"It's the way business is going, the way sport is going, especially in the pandemic.

"I think a lot of people are looking for sport as a way to escape. Sportsmen have a responsibility to provide as much entertainment as we can."

Morris said he looked forward to returning to the Royals, a team he played for 2015. He said earning a big fee would not change his approach to playing.

"The auction is out of our control," he said.&nbsp;

"It's an absolute lottery. At the end of the day I've got to do what I have been doing over the last couple of years.&nbsp;

"There will be a little bit of added pressure, that's natural. But I'm fortunate enough to have been part of this franchise before and I know what I'm getting into.”

The tall all-rounder has also played T20 cricket in Australia’s Big Bash League, South Africa’s Mzansi Super League and for two English counties. Surprisingly, though, his appearances for South Africa in international cricket have been sporadic.

He said during a press conference in Durban, where he is playing in a domestic T20 tournament, that there had been no contact with his home country’s selectors since he was picked as a late replacement for the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

And he remains reticent about whether he would be available to play for South Africa in the T20 World Cup in India later this year.&nbsp;

"That's a difficult question," he said. "If that conversation comes, it comes."

Whopping INR 6144 crore in 14 years of IPL: Auction, salary money spent across cricketers globally

The last name at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 auction was of young all-rounder Arjun Tendulkar, son of legendary&nbsp;Sachin&nbsp;Tendulkar. As the name of the 21-year-old popped up, Mumbai Indians held their paddle up to sign the youngster for&nbsp;the base price of INR 20 lakh.&nbsp;Mumbai Indians’ Zaheer Khan and Mahela&nbsp;Jayawardene&nbsp;expressed their opinion on the young Arjun Tendulkar after the southpaw was roped in by MI for IPL 2021.&nbsp;

While social media came up with all sorts of theories, many missed the fact that Arjun has been part of the Mumbai Indians set-up for a couple of years as a support bowler and recently made the cut in the Mumbai state team for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he made two appearances.&nbsp;

Ganguly said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was keen on having crowds for India`s first Test against England, which was the first cricket to be held in the country in over a year.

"We wanted the fans back. We could have had them in the first Test in Chennai but we decided to go with the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, who said let`s see how it goes for the first one because it`s our first game after a long time and we`ll open it up for the second Test. I know the Gujarat Cricket Association will add a bit more to the cricket, not just with the game but a lot of other things around the game. It`s going to be a great Test match for everyone," said Ganguly.

The third and fourth matches of the series will be played at the refurbished Sardar Patel Stadium. The third Test will be a day-night match and Ganguly said that tickets have been sold out.

"Ahmedabad is completely sold out. I spoke to Jay Shah and he`s very keen on these Test matches. Just for him also cricket is coming back to Ahmedabad after six-seven years because they built the new stadium, and I have told him we have set an example with pink-ball Test last year in Kolkata, so it cannot go beyond that and we want to see every seat and stand full. And that`s what it is, the tickets have gone, as well as for the T20s which will follow the Tests," said Ganguly.

"Ben Stokes and (Jofra) Archer, they are really good players. They did really well for England, so it is not about any individual. I think it is all about a team, England team, they are a very balanced outfit which did really well recently against Sri Lanka.

The Proteas was bought by IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2020 edition of the tournament which was held in the United Arab Emirates due to coronavirus outbreak in India.&nbsp;

"Just a short message to let everyone know that I've made myself unavailable for RCB at this year's IPL," the 37-year-old wrote on Twitter.

"I'm also not planning on playing for another team, just taking some time off during that period. Thank you to RCB for understanding."

However, the speedster clarified that he will not be retiring and that he still hopes to compete in other leagues.

"I will be playing in other leagues, nicely spaced out to give myself an opportunity to do some thing's I've been excited about as well as continue to play the game I love so much. NO, I'm NOT retired," he added.

Steyn could not do well for RCB as the South African got just one wicket in three matches as Bangalore finished fourth in the table before being eliminated by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the playoffs.

Former Australian captain Allan Border has acknowledged the contribution of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL)</a> in breaking the ice between Indian and Australian players while cooling down the tempers that used to flare on the pitch.&nbsp;

Australia and India are set to take on each other in a four-match Test series starting Thursday at the Adelaide Oval. Border, while speaking during a media interaction, said that there was a clash of cultures earlier but the rivalry was always competitive while adding that IPL ended that barrier between players.

“I think Sunny (Sunil Gavaskar) talked about (in a media article) that there was always a little bit of clash, clash of cultures between Australians and Indians. We play the game a certain way, we are brought up to play the game in an aggressive manner. We use swear words a lot in our natural conversation without meaning anything by it. Whereas in India, sometimes the players used to take offence with the way we were,” Border said.

“That clash of cultures has been addressed in recent times because of the IPL. Because you have got Australians and South Africans and Indians, the different cultures playing in one franchise you get to know each other a lot better. The appreciation is what makes different people tick when you are in the same dressing room compared to opposing dressing rooms. I think that has helped the Indians and Australians and the way, the mannerisms out in the field. But don’t mistake the smiling assassins (Tim Paine’s Australians). They will be friendly alright but they will be keen to be the Australian boys because they really rate this series very highly,” added Border.

The former Australian admitted that Virat Kohli perfectly represents the changing face of Indian cricket, backing Greg Chappell’s comments of Kohli being the most Australian non-Australian. Border said Kohli’s involvement in the game sets him apart from his peers and added that he likes Kohli’s passion on the field.&nbsp;

“We just love the way he plays cricket. You can see in his body language out on the ground. He lives and breathes every minute. He is out there, he just loves it. There is a bit more chat out on the ground. He talks to his own players and opposition. He is in the contest more so than the other Indian players we have seen in the past,” said Border before describing the new Indian cricketer.

“What we talk in this country is about the new Indian cricketer. He has got tattoes. Married to a Bollywood actress. He is a very feisty competitor and not to say that other Indians aren’t like that. But he just wears his heart on the sleeve. I suppose he tends to play cricket like some of us tend to. He is very much liked in these shores. He is a seriously good player — that is obviously there, but I like that passion he brings to the game,” added Border.

Addition of 2 new IPL teams set to be approved at BCCI AGM: Reports

Australia's pacer spearhead Pat Cummins was rested for the third and final ODI against India after getting an unassailable 2-0 lead against the visitors. The paceman was a part of IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders so he was given rest before the much-anticipated Test series.&nbsp;

However, Shane Warne was not pleased with the decision to rest Cummins. According to Aussie great, IPL is not more important for players than playing for Australia.&nbsp;

"Pat Cummins and the resting, I’m a little bit disappointed," Warne said on Fox Cricket.

"I know it is a big summer that we have and it is pretty jam-packed, but I don’t think Australian players should be resting after two games.

"Why are they resting? Is it because they played IPL? So they are allowed to go and play all these games in the IPL and then they need a rest because they have been playing in IPL.

"Surely playing for Australia is more important than playing in the IPL. So I would say you should choose. Either miss the IPL or you cannot miss games because you need a break coming off an IPL for an Australian game.

"It is a One Day International for Australia and you need a rest to get through the summer after two games," Warne signed off.

The 13th edition of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL)</a> was successfully hosted in the UAE this year amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) received a lot of plaudits for safely conducting the tournament even after moving it overseas. IPL 2020 was played behind closed doors with franchises staying in bio-secure bubbles.&nbsp;

However, there was a time when tennis world number one Novak Djokovic’s positive COVID-19 test put the entire IPL 2020 in jeopardy. The BCCI hierarchy discussed the fate of the tournament after Djokovic tested positive for the dreaded virus after participating in his charity events in Croatia and Serbia. But the Indian board went ahead with the plans and went on to successfully organise the event in the UAE – and reaped rich rewards for organising a full-fledged IPL.

BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal has now revealed how IPL 2020 could have been nearly cancelled after Djokovic tested positive for the coronavirus.

"After that report (about Djokovic testing positive) came in, we were in two minds. Many people told us to not go ahead with it (IPL). What if something happens to a player? The IPL would go on for almost three months. However, Jay said we should go ahead, he was more confident than all of us," Dhumal was quoted as saying by Indian Express, as he recalled his conversation with BCCI secretary Jay Shah.

Notably, as many as 30,000 COVID-19 tests were conducted by the BCCI during the course of the tournament with 60 matches played in the UAE. None of the games was affected by the virus.

Indian Premier League's success was in doubt before the tournament began. Many felt that coronavirus pandemic and no crowd will leave a major dent on the league's viewership. But the story has been otherwise as the just-concluded IPL witnessed a record-breaking 28 per cent increase in viewership compared to the last edition. The tournament was played behind closed doors as a safety measure due to the outbreak of the virus. The organisers found it challenging to conduct the tournament keeping health and safety of players in the top. Players were placed in bio-bubbles for weeks. IPL 2020 witnessed record-breaking surge in viewership

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to roll out a tender for two more teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after Diwali. The franchises have raised a few questions related to next players’ auction with some worried about the quality of squads if 10 teams will play IPL 2021 in place of usual 8 teams.&nbsp;

Many franchises have struggled to maintain quality in the squad given that only four overseas players can be named in the playing XI while having a total of 8 overseas players in the roster. According to reports, the cause of concerns for franchises is that the quality of the pool of Indian players would decrease massively if 10 teams are playing in IPL 2021.&nbsp;

"Teams are already finding it difficult to ensure quality. If we look at most IPL squads, around seven to nine players form the core while two to three players per squad are rotated to find the right balance. Now, if eight franchises are increased to 10, that quality further gets diluted. IPL's core - the very essence of having a salary purse every year - is to ensure the overall quality of all eight franchises remains somewhere at the same level, regardless of an individual franchise's spending capacity. If two extra teams draw from the same pool of cricketers at the auction, can the quality be guaranteed," existing franchises asked as per the Times of India.

A top BCCI official has suggested that the participating overseas players per playing XI should be increased to 5 from 4 as the official said it could solve the problem of quality.

"There are quality overseas players who are warming the bench every season because of the restriction. An added overseas player will balance out that need," the official is said to have suggested.

With IPL being known as a platform where talent meets opportunity, and a stage where lesser-known Indian domestic talents are unearthed, it is going to be interesting to see whether the BCCI and IPL Governing Council approves or even discuss such proposals.

Change overseas players' limit to 5: BCCI official suggests changes for 10-team IPL 2021

Royal Challengers Bangalore ran out steam in the second half of the tournament and ended up losing five matches in a row, including the eliminator clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad.&nbsp;

RCB has not won a single IPL title in the last 13 years. Indian skipper Virat Kohli led the side for 8 years. Kohli has been criticised by many as he failed to deliver for the franchise.&nbsp;

Former India batsman and two-time IPL winning captain Gautam Gambhir held Kohli accountable for the loss against SRH. In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, he was asked if he would change the captaincy, to which Gambhir replied: "100%, because the problem is about accountability. Eight years into the tournament [without a trophy], eight years is a long time. Tell me any other captain…forget about captain, tell me any other player who would have got eight years and wouldn’t have won the title and would have still continued with it. So it has to be accountability. A captain needs to take accountability."

"It’s not only about one year, it’s not only about this. I have nothing against Virat Kohli but somewhere down the line, he needs to put his hand up and say, ‘yes, I am responsible. I am accountable’."

Gambhir went on to compare Kohli's situation with other captains in the past, who were removed as they failed to win the coveted cup. He said: "Eight years is a long, long time. Look at what happened to R Ashwin. Two years of captaincy [for the Kings XI Punjab], he couldn’t deliver and he was removed. We talk about MS Dhoni, we talk about Rohit Sharma, we talk about Virat Kohli...not at all. Dhoni has won three [IPL] titles, Rohit Sharma has won four titles, and that’s the reason they’ve captained for such a long time because they’ve delivered. I’m sure if Rohit Sharma wouldn’t have delivered for eight years, he would have been removed as well. There should not be different yardsticks for different people."

"The problem and the accountability starts from the top, not from the management nor the support staff, but from the leader. You’re the leader, you’re the captain. When you get the credit, you should take the criticism as well."

'Deflated' Rajasthan Royals take on 'dominating' Mumbai Indians in the 45th match of IPL 2020 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. Mumbai are on the top of the IPL table with 14 points in the pocket. They bounced back to winning ways after handing a 10-wicket win over the Chennai Super Kings. Mumbai have seven wins in 10 matches. Bumrah and Boult had a wonderful outing in the last match. Quinton de Kock has been in the form of his life. Ishan Kishan and the Proteas stitched a match-winning partnership to hand Chennai their heaviest defeat in IPL history. Rohit Sharma's availability depends on his fitness, but his absence has not affected Mumbai. Rajasthan Royals, on the other hand, have had a woeful season as they are second-last in the points table. Last time Mumbai and Rajasthan clashed, MI thrashed RR by 57 runs after Suryakumar Yadav’s 79* and Jasprit Bumrah’s four-wicket haul. Rajasthan have four wins and seven losses this season. Their chances to make it into the play-offs look grim and if they lose this one they might be knocked out of the tournament. However, a bowling-friendly venue like Abu Dhabi may help Jofra Archer with the ball. Probable XI: Mumbai Indians: Quinton de Kock (wk), Rohit Sharma/Saurabh Tiwary, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard (c), Krunal Pandya, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Rahul Chahar, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah Rajasthan Royals: Ben Stokes, Robin Uthappa, Sanju Samson (wk), Steven Smith (c), Jos Buttler, Riyan Parag, Rahul Tewatia, Jofra Archer, Shreyas Gopal, Ankit Rajpoot, Kartik Tyagi

All hell broke loose when the cricketing world feasted on three Super Overs in two matches on Sunday as the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL)</a> touched new heights when it comes to intense encounters and nail-biting drama. While fans were gushing over the fact that the day match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders went to the Super Over, little did they know that the evening game between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab will let them witness two Super Overs in a single match – the first such occurrence in IPL history.

The Indian Premier League is known for its quality and is regarded as the best T20 tournament in the world. The matches on Sunday just gave it a seal of approval. And yes, it was not the first time that matches went to Super Over in IPL 2020, remember DC vs KXIP and RCB vs MI?

The most heartening fact about IPL 2020 is the sub-stories it provides. In the first match, it was former KKR captain and current captain, Dinesh Karthik and Eoin Morgan who stitched a crucial partnership before Lockie Ferguson, playing his first game in IPL 2020, took over the charge with the ball. DK's conversations with Varun Chakravarthy are something which fans look forward to whenever KKR play. The young Abdul Samad showing his hitting prowess in the death overs. Kuldeep Yadav making a brave comeback.

In the second match, young Arshdeep Singh picking two crucial wickets of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan. Or substitute fielder Anukul Roy running to take the catch of Nicholas Pooran in the Super Over. Or even the best batsman of IPL 2020, KL Rahul, trying the uncanny reverse scoop in the Super Over. IPL is magic!

Deepak Hooda and Chris Jordan, for Sunrisers Hyderabad, just managed seven runs off Trent Boult in the 20th over of second innings to take the MI vs KXIP game to the Super Over.

For KKR, Lockie Ferguson’s heroics with the ball, in main match and Super Over, eased them to 10 points in IPL 2020 points table, the MI vs KXIP match had different drama. After being tied at 176 in regular 20-over affair, Jasprit Bumrah restricted Punjab to just five runs in first Super Over before Mohammed Shami steamed in to repeat the same for his Team India team-mate.&nbsp;

Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore take on KL Rahul's 'unlucky' Kings XI Punjab in the 31st match of IPL 2020 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Kings XI Punjab have had a woeful run this year. They currently sit at the bottom of the table with just one win (that came against Royal Challengers Bangalore) and six losses. However, the return of Universe Boss Chris Gayle on a ground like Sharjah might just do the trick for Punjab. KL Rahul and Co. need to win every match from now on to still make it into the playoffs. Kings XI have been unlucky this season. The last match, they almost won it against Kolkata Knight Riders but they crumbled in the final moments giving the match to KKR. Royal Challengers Bangalore, on the other hand, have had a good run this year. They have been defeated twice this year, one of them was handed by Kings XI. AB de Villiers' blistering in Sharjah against Kolkata Knight Riders makes him lethal for Kings XI Punjab. Virat Kohli has also found his form and will be dangerous. RCB are currently standing on the third position in the points table, and win will take them to the second position. The two teams have faced each other 25 times in the IPL so far, and KXIP leads the head-to-head count 13-12. Probable XI KXIP: Chris Gayle, KL Rahul (c), Mayank Agarwal, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Glenn Maxwell, Mandeep Singh, Chris Jordan, Mohammed Shami, Murugan Ashwin/K Gowtham, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh RCB: Devdutt Padikkal, Aaron Finch, Virat Kohli (c), AB de Villiers (wk), Shivam Dube, Chris Morris, Isuru Udana, Washington Sundar, Navdeep Saini, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal

IPL 2020, Kings XI Punjab vs Royal Challengers Bangalore: Preview, stats, probable XI

The return of cricket’s biggest celebration, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl-2020">Indian Premier League (IPL)</a>, has got the cricket superstars bantering on cricket after a sabbatical, and it is not just about on-field action that is being referred to here. On Thursday, Hardik Pandya and AB de Villiers got into a fun word-war on Twitter. It all began when Mumbai Indians all-rounder Hardik Pandya tried trolling MS Dhoni on Twitter for getting out in ‘Gully Cricket’ by gully rules.

He posted a 20-second video featuring MS Dhoni for&nbsp;Dream11’s latest campaign, where MSD is playing gully cricket with youngsters and hits a brilliant four; but gets out, as the ball directly hits a scooter. And by gully cricket rules, a direct shot on the scooter is declared out. Pandya took to Twitter and jokingly wrote to MS Dhoni:

Hardik Pandya is all set to make a comeback post his lengthy injury layoff. Pandya's form will be crucial for defending champions MI. All eyes will be set on the screen, as retired Indian skipper, MSD, will be seen in action after a long break. Whereas, AB de Villiers will look forward to helping RCB win their first IPL trophy since the league's inception in tough weather conditions.

The return of cricket’s biggest celebration, Indian Premier League (IPL), has got the cricket superstars bantering on cricket after a sabbatical, and it is not just about on-field action that is being referred to here. He posted a 20-second video featuring MS Dhoni for Dream11’s latest campaign, where MSD is playing gully cricket with youngsters and hits a brilliant four; but gets out, as the ball directly hits a scooter. And by gully cricket rules, a direct shot on the scooter is declared out. Pandya took to Twitter and jokingly wrote to MS Dhoni: ALSO READ: IPL trivia: Top records of 'Thala' MS Dhoni in the tournament ‘’@msdhoni Two-wheeler pe laga toh four?!! ABD shared another 20-second video featuring Pandya where he hits a six, but in turn loses the ball in a gully cricket match, and is asked to spare 20 Rs. for the lost ball. IPL 2020: Hardik Pandya Jokingly trolls MS Dhoni, ABD; reminds him not to mess with ‘Thala’

India's Mahendra Singh Dhoni may have signed off from international duties but he'll be at the heart of the action in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">Indian Premier League</a> -- a tournament he helped inspire, and where he remains a towering figure.

Dhoni, who has led the Chennai Super Kings to three titles and five runner-up finishes in the IPL's 12 editions, will feature in the opening match on Saturday against the Mumbai Indians, the defending champions.

The game comes more than a year after the 39-year-old last played for India in their semi-final loss to New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup.

After much speculation, the wicketkeeper-batsman finally announced the end of his 16-year international career last month.

And without the pressure of having to play well to keep his place in the national team, the flamboyant Dhoni is expected to shine in UAE, the IPL's temporary home as India battles a rampant coronavirus problem.

"He is very fit and I believe he is working very hard on it. Plus he has stopped playing international cricket so there will be less burden on his body," Saba Karim, another former India wicketkeeper, told AFP.

"Global cricket still needs an icon like MS Dhoni to continue."

Dhoni's captaincy began with India winning the inaugural T20 World Cup title in 2007, a success that triggered the birth of the IPL -- the world's most popular and richest cricket league --&nbsp;a year later.

"Dhoni played an instrumental role in kick-starting the IPL because of the way he brought a different dimension to the shorter format of the game because of his aggressive side with the willow," Karim said.

"Also with his calm exterior behind the stumps."

Dhoni, once hailed as the world's best finisher, has played 190 IPL matches, scoring 4,432 runs including 23 half-centuries.

An exemplary leader with fast glovework, Dhoni has made Chennai one of IPL's most loved franchises with almost 200,000 people following the team's fan club on Twitter.

&nbsp;

<h2>- 'Soul of Chennai' -</h2>

&nbsp;

Chennai chief executive Kasi Viswanathan says Dhoni remains key to the team's plans and they expect him to keep playing till the 2022 edition.

The team has been under scrutiny after arriving in the UAE last month with two players testing positive for the coronavirus.&nbsp;

Senior batsman Suresh Raina and veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh later opted out of the competition.

"I swear if Dhoni pulls out of IPL, there's no IPL for me this year!" a Twitter user wrote after the withdrawals.

Cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra said Dhoni is "the biggest strength of the team and the entire franchise is dependent on him".&nbsp;&nbsp;

"He is the soul of Chennai Super Kings. As long as he is there, CSK's heart keeps beating and they move forward. MS Dhoni, the player and the captain, has a great impact," Chopra&nbsp;said on his YouTube show.

"Dhoni is going to rule the roost once again as a captain, as a batsman."

Chennai and Dhoni were plunged into controversy in 2015, when the team were banned from the IPL for two years for match-fixing.

But Dhoni and his team -- which includes many players aged over 35, including Australia's Shane Watson and South African Imran Tahir -- came back with a bang.

Labelled 'Dad's Army' by the media, Chennai returned to lift the title in 2018 and establish themselves as one of the most consistent teams in IPL history.

"Dhoni is Chennai, Chennai is Dhoni. If Dhoni is doing well. Chennai is doing well," veteran commentator Harsha Bhogle said on Cricbuzz.com.

Goodbye India, hello IPL: Dhoni set to 'rule roost' in UAE

Chennai Super Kings bowling consultant Eric Simons has said that Aussie cricketers like Steve Smith and David Warner will remain in for isolation for six days post-arrival in the UAE for the Indian Premier League. These players will have to remain in isolation despite having spent time at the bio-secure bubble in the UK.&nbsp;

After the third and final ODI against England, Steve Smith, David Warner and Josh Hazlewood will join their respective IPL teams in the UAE.&nbsp;

“We are hearing - although it’s not confirmed yet - that they will also have to self-isolate in their rooms for six days and produce negative tests on the first, third and sixth days before they can join us,” Simons wrote in his column for ‘Manners on Cricket’ website.

“We had hoped that they could all move from their current bio-secure bubbles into ours but it seems likely that there will be no ‘leniency’, which is understandable. Apart from our brilliant Indian players, led by the ageless MS Dhoni, we do have Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis and Lungi Ngidi in full training so there’s no shortage of talent.”

The Australians will arrive in the UAE on September 17. According to Simons, the players in CSK will have to wear a smart health tracking device whenever they step out of hotel rooms.

“We were issued with tracking devices to be worn around our necks whenever we left our hotel rooms but our physiotherapist has been very creative in turning them into ‘watches’ so at least that doesn’t feel restrictive,” said the former South African coach.

While international cricket has resumed with the three-match Test series between England and West Indies, there is still unclarity surrounding the much-talked-about <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020</a>. While the Asia Cup 2020 has been officially postponed, the T20 World Cup is on the verge of postponement amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, the question remains what happens to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">IPL</a>.&nbsp;

As per a report, some of the franchises are growing frustrated due to lack of clarity while losing hope for a full-fledged season of IPL 2020. And many of them, as per the report, feels that IPL 2020 has now started to look impossible.
One of the IPL franchise CEO mulled over the lack of clarity as he said that it has started to hurt the interest of franchises, players and the sponsors.&nbsp;

'We are still unsure': Few franchises 'losing hope' of IPL 2020

Everyone awaits the final decision of the BCCI on this year's IPL season which has been suspended indefinitely by the board in the light of the coronavirus pandemic.

The chances of the season being held have increased as the sporting events around the world are resuming slowly. BCCI could close up to Rs 4000 crores if this year's IPL gets shelved.&nbsp;

However, Kings XI Punjab co-owner Ness Wadia has realised the difficulties in holding this year's league and also said that the franchise won’t have any issues with a curtailed IPL.

“Considering the current situation, there are too many complications in hosting the T20 World Cup with 16 teams. Organising the IPL won’t be easy too. It has to be at a place which has adequate infrastructure, both on and off the field,” Kings XI Punjab co-owner Ness Wadia told PTI.

“I am sure BCCI is putting all its efforts towards a full IPL but we have no issues even with a curtailed one. We have to be aware of the situation we are in and optimise ourselves,” Wadia said.

“IPL has also been a very forward-looking and flexible tournament and that has to be maintained during the COVID situation. Going back to 2009, within one month we switched from India to South Africa,” said &nbsp;Wadia.

With cases rising in India, hosting the IPL overseas could be a better option. UAE and Sri Lanka provide good infrastructure for the league to be shifted outside.&nbsp;

“We would need an adequate number of hotels in that place so that we are able to quarantine players if needed. Whether in India or abroad, there has to be enough infrastructure,” added Wadia.

It is too early. We are yet to officially discuss the IPL schedule. But it depends on the safety of the environment. Saving human life and breaking the coronavirus chain are more important for all of us,” Ganguly said.

BCCI keen on staging IPL 2020 in India, schedule yet to be discussed officially: Sourav Ganguly

With the situation surrounding the deadly COVID-19 continuing to deteriorate with each passing day, the fate of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 hands in the balance. The dreaded virus has left the entire sporting calendar in pieces with almost all the major tournaments and events getting cancelled or postponed. While IPL 2020, which was earlier set to start from March 29, was postponed till April 15 amid the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, there has been no official confirmation whether the cash-rich tournament will even take place this season or not.<o:p></o:p>

The former Mental Conditioning and Strategic Leadership Coach of the Indian cricket team, Paddy Upton is of the view that the athletes are bound to witness a range of experiences during the ongoing lockdown. Upton said while it will be a welcome break for some of the players, many will feel a sense of anxiety and insecurity, both professionally and financially. <o:p></o:p>

“For athletes, there would be a range of experiences, from welcome relief for the established to anxiety and insecurity, both professionally and financially, for possibly a greater number,” Upton told a leading daily.

“Fringe players and those at the early stages of their career, especially those who have very recently broken through to the next level, would naturally be feeling this break very disruptive,” he further added.<o:p></o:p>

Upton termed IPL as a cash cow while adding that anxiety and depression arise within normal people when they tend to focus too much on themselves and the problems they are having. He further advised them to focus on other people and care for them while looking for opportunities that are available during this unprecedented scenario.

<h2 class="MsoNormal">"IPL a cash cow"</h2>

“Naturally IPL is a huge highlight on the calendar for many cricketers, and a cash cow. Anxiety and depression arise within healthy and normal people, when they spend too much time focusing firstly on themselves, and secondly on the problems that they are having. I would really caution not only athletes but everyone, to use their awareness to guard against this very normal threat. The way to overcome it is to focus on other people, caring for them, and at the same time to look for opportunities that are available due to this additional time,” he said.

With the situation surrounding the deadly COVID-19 continuing to deteriorate with each passing day, the fate of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 hands in the balance.

While IPL 2020, which was earlier set to start from March 29, was postponed till April 15 amid the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, there has been no official confirmation whether the cash-rich tournament will even take place this season or not. “For athletes, there would be a range of experiences, from welcome relief for the established to anxiety and insecurity, both professionally and financially, for possibly a greater number,” Upton told a leading daily. Upton termed IPL as a cash cow while adding that anxiety and depression arise within normal people when they tend to focus too much on themselves and the problems they are having. He further advised them to focus on other people and care for them while looking for opportunities that are available during this unprecedented scenario. "IPL a cash cow" “Naturally IPL is a huge highlight on the calendar for many cricketers, and a cash cow.
