Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar lauded the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings for their dominating show in the recently-suspended Indian Premier League. The Yellow Army was second-placed in the points table before the cash-rich T20 league suspended after cases emerged inside the bio-secure bubble.

Dhoni and Co. redeemed themselves after a poor season last year. Gavaskar was impressed with the 'renewed energy' of the team and wrote about it in his column for Sportstar.

“All the other teams were in top form with last year’s disappointing team, Chennai Super Kings, looking like the champion it usually had been all these years. There was a renewed energy about the team this time, though there were no major changes to its squad,” Gavaskar wrote.

He went on to praise Chennai Super Kings' choice to promote Moeen Ali to No. 3 during IPL 2021 ended up being a masterstroke.

Batting up the order, the England all-rounder pounded 206 runs in six matches for Chennai Super Kings' at a strike rate of 157.25. He furnished the innings with some genuinely necessary stimulus with the bat, which the franchise appeared to be deficient with regards to last season.

“The promotion of Moeen Ali to the top of the order at No. 3 turned out to be a masterstroke as the left-handed batsman produced some blistering innings”, he said.

“The seasoned Faf du Plessis was in cracking form, too, and, along with the promising Ruturaj Gaikwad, gave the team some top stars. Sam Curran continues to impress and improve with every game and bids fair to be considered a proper all-rounder now”, he observed.

“It’s the final overs’ bowling that the side needs to strengthen as was evident in the match against Mumbai when, despite scoring 218, it lost the game off the last ball”, he added.

"I have picked Faf du Plessis first. He has batted amazingly well, scored runs consistently and at a good pace. I think with him will be Jos Buttler. His real form was seen in the 124-run knock against SRH. He was a little hot and cold before that but it was not that he was getting out for five runs. I have kept Moeen Ali at No.3. He made good contributions when he was sent to bat at No.3. At No.4, I have got Glenn Maxwell. RCB started to play him at No.4. We thought he will get stuck on the Chennai pitch but he batted well," said Chopra on his Youtube channel.

"At No.5, I have kept AB de Villiers. He is not your No.5 but when RCB kept him there, we all were surprised. At No.6, the start was slow, there was a knock of 40-odd but then the 87 against CSK, Kieron Pollard became the lord of the Kotla," Chopra continued.

"After that, I have kept Chris Morris. Whichever encounters Rajasthan won, his performance has been good, somewhere wickets and runs at other times. They were important runs. It might have been a short knock but a match-winning one. I was confused between Pat Cummins and Sam Curran, I am going with Sam Curran for the simple reason that he is value for money. He does better than his abilities.”

"At No.10, I have got Rashid. I thought about Narine and didn't find any other good spinner in the overseas contingent. In the end, I have kept Trent Boult," signed off Chopra.

Holding IPL 2021 amidst the COVID-19 crisis in India is still a raging debate. While some felt that the tournament should have been suspended earlier itself, whereas others thought of it as the only positive thing going on as citizens were placed under lockdown.

However, cases emerged in the bio-secure bubble during the tournament and the cash-rich league had to be suspended indefinitely. The decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council and BCCI.

Kevin Pietersen, who was a commentator for IPL on Star Sports, felt that the T20 tournament was initially "a positive thing for India".

"I definitely bought into the fact that continuing the tournament initially was a positive thing for India. The country is not in a good way but I felt that providing six hours of entertainment each day was certainly a positive thing," Pietersen wrote in his blog on Betway.

"We were doing a job for all of India, creating a show to give people some relief. I thought that the package the players were delivering was fantastic.

"Yes, the wickets were a little slow, certainly in Chennai, but the cricket was still very good.

"Don’t forget that the players and broadcasters are not blind to what was going on in India. There was an awful lot of empathy and desire to help in any way we could, which is why we were so keen to put on the show," he added.

"But once players tested positive then there was going to be an awful lot of pressure on the BCCI to postpone the tournament and I do believe that they had little choice," he signed off.

The 14th edition of the Indian Premier League was postponed on Tuesday after COVID-19 cases emerged inside the bio-secure bubble. BCCI has been looking for a possible window to continue to the cash-rich league in order to avoid hefty losses.

A number of English counties have offered to host the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season in the month of September. IPL 2021 was been postponed indefinitely owing to the rising cases of COVID-19 across teams.

The MCC, Surrey, Lancashire, Warwickshire – based at Lord’s – the Kia Oval (London), Edgbaston (Birmingham) and Old Trafford (Manchester) are part of the group of County clubs to have written to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) while inviting them to extend the opportunity to the BCCI, according to ESPNCricinfo.

However, the Hampshire county boss stated that it is illegal to host the IPL there and there have been no serious discussions on the matter.

“I did hear about the discussion but I am not sure how it can happen. As per the current arrangement, it will be illegal to host the IPL here,” said Hampshire county boss as quoted by Cricbuzz.

Moreover, the counties are hoping that the games could be played in front of packed crowds.

However, there are a few hurdles to the plan, as stated in the report. While it is hard to predict what the pandemic will bring next, there is still some time before any final call is taken on the T20 World Cup hosting. The quarantine issue of bringing players and staff from around the world into the UK will be a major challenge. But with a number of Indian players being in the UK at the time for the Test series against England, could be helpful.

Another major challenge is the packed calendar. The Test series between India and England ends on September 14 and the latter is expected in Pakistan for a T20I series less than a month later.

However, the counties are hoping that a window could be managed with some flexibility.

Akhtar also pointed out that bio-secure bubbles are not the way going forward. He pointed out the flaws of bio-bubbles during PSL and then pointed out the similar outcome during IPL.

"IPL was never viable. We made a bio-secure bubble in the PSL and it completely flopped. India tried and the same happened there. In UAE and England, we would have had it. Over here, even people working in hotels are not safe. They don’t remain in bio-secure bubble. Despite a recent loss against RCB, Delhi Capitals maintain a clean record with four wins out of six matches and sit on the third spot of the IPL points table. The team will be hoping for Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis and Kagiso Rabada to return to their match-winning forms as the team's responsibility lies on young skipper Rishabh Pant. Delhi Capitals opener, Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan have produced some best opening partnership for the team and will be looking to continue to do so. Shimron Hetmyer's quick-fire fifty in the previous match proves that the West Indian is back in form and will be lethal for the opposition bowling attack.

Kolkata Knight Riders, on the other hand, will have some morales boosted after a win over Punjab Kings. However, the team is yet to find its rhythm in its batting order. Skipper Eoin Morgan found some form in the last match and will be looking to continue his form. IPL 2021- Ravindra Jadeja'a all-round performance ends RCB's win-streak

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli wants Ravindra Jadeja to continue performing like the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder did in the Indian Premier League (IPL) match here at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday evening.

Jadeja whacked 37 runs in the final over of CSK`s innings and then came back to pick three wickets as MS Dhoni-led side thrashed RCB by 69 runs.

The all-rounder smashed 62 runs in just 28 balls, with the help of five 6s and four 4s, as CSK scored 191 in their allotted 20 overs.

In reply, RCB managed to score 122/9 and suffered their first defeat of the ongoing IPL.

"I have believed in Jadeja a lot. His ability has been there for everyone to see. He has been out of the team due that injury in Australia and I am happy to see him perform with the bat, ball and in the field," Kohli told host broadcaster Star Sports after the defeat.

"After two months, he will be back playing for India and it is always a pleasure to see your premier all-rounder be in a good space and perform well. I hope he keeps doing more often because when he plays well and is confident, that opens so many options not only for CSK but also for Indian cricket," he added.

In the match, Jadeja took on Harshal Patel, who has been the pick of the RCB bowlers and whacked five sixes in his final over. Harshal had given just 14 runs in three overs before Jadeja came firing on all cylinders in the final six balls of CSK`s innings.

"You have to look at it the right way. I feel this is positive feedback for our side. A performance like this, it is good to get this out early on in the tournament. Our start was decent enough. One guy completely beat us. Today his skill was there for everyone to see," said Kohli.

"He (Harshal) bowled well and we will continue to back him. His two wickets of the set batters took the momentum away from CSK before Jaddu took it away in the final over. We need to look at the loss in the right way.

"I am opening the innings with Dev. We will continue to test our batting depth. As a batting side we are confident. We are gonna switch the roles at some point," the RCB skipper added.

CSK are now at the top of the points table and will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday while RCB will now lock horns with Delhi Capitals on Tuesday.

According to the former Indian opener, Samson needs to display proactive body language on the field. "Looking at his body language, his teammates don't appear too happy with him being the captain. But this is a fact that if a player remains in his own and suddenly, he is made the captain, it takes him time to talk to players, mix with them. So that I feel is proving to be difficult for Sanju Samson," Sehwag said about the Rajasthan Royals captain in a video on Cricbuzz.

The outspoken cricketing stalwart listed out few things for Sanju Samson to improve. "When a bowler gets taken for runs, it is important to see how the captain responds. I have noticed this with Rishabh Pant that he goes and keeps his hands on the bowler's shoulders and goes 'It doesn't matter. You'll get hit for 40-50. But bowl according to your field'," added Sehwag.

"This helps the bowler retain his confidence in captain. Irrespective of what the result it, the captain should continue showing confidence of a bowler who is being taken for runs or even a batsman who isn't scoring runs."

"When we come to Wankhede, bowling second is always a challenge. We prepare for such conditions. It does get difficult against these quality batters. I'm not saying that because I'm on the losing side. Bowlers try to bowl with the wet ball, but it's always difficult to do that."

There were no such partnership in the Punjab Kings innings as the wickets kept tumbling. However, newbie Shahrukh Khan played a crucial knock to take Punjab, who were once at 26/5 to a 100+ score. The batsman was three runs short of smashing his maiden half-century before getting dismissed by Sam Curran. Chennai bowlers did not have to do much and restricted the Punjab Kings to 106 at the end of the 20 overs.

Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, did not face much of a challenge. They lost Ruturaj Gaikwad early in the powerplay itself.

However, a 66-run partnership of Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali landed a fatal blow to the Punjab Kings. Despite losing few wickets in the latter stages, Dhoni and Co. registered a thumping victory to open their account in IPL 2021 and this surely will boost their morale. With this win, CSK go to the second position pushing SRH to the bottom of the table, whereas, Punjab Kings slip to the seventh spot.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan is hopeful to bring the cash-rich Indian Premier League to the British capital to set up the city as the "undisputed sporting capital" of the world.

Khan said that in future, the IPL can be played in London which has grounds like Lord's and the Oval, the headquarters of county side Surrey.

"The IPL is a fantastic league but I'm desperate not just to see Kohli and others here when India come (to England) as they are this year but to see the likes of (MS) Dhoni, (Rohit) Sharma and (Jasprit) Bumrah come here on a regular basis," Khan said at a children's cricket training session in southwest London on Friday.

The British Capital has already hosted NFL, MLB and NBA events, and now Sadiq Khan, who is looking to get re-elected as the Mayor of London, wants to host the Indian Premier League too.

"I've said for some time that I would love London to keep its place as the sporting capital of the world," he said. "I want this to be the undisputed sporting capital of the world.

"Indians love cricket, we love cricket, we love Indians. We want this to be a bridge between India and London and Surrey deserve huge credit in being pioneers and with their vision to get IPL here."

According to Khan, IPL matches in London could also persuade the Indian cricket board (BCCI) to ease their policy prohibiting star players from taking part in overseas leagues and pave the way for their involvement in the ECB's new Hundred tournament.

"When you speak to the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board), they would love for Indian players to be playing in the Hundred," said Khan. "I don't want London just to be a place where Indians invest and shoot Bollywood movies, I want the IPL here as well."

The BCCI has, however, given so such hints of taking the league overseas and out of India. The 14th edition of the cash-rich T20 league kicked on April 9 and is being played behind closed doors amidst coronavirus pandemic.

Rajasthan Royal's wicketkeeper Jos Buttler lauded CSK skipper MS Dhoni to mark the beginning of wicketkeeping captains from India as there are four such captains in the ongoing Indian Premier League.

Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Sanju Samson lead Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals respectively.

"I am sure MSD (Dhoni) has something to do with the sixth sense and breeding of wicketkeepers who can captain. He obviously has been a fantastic captain and there are lots of players who want to follow in his footsteps," Jos Buttler told PTI Bhasha.

"I think a wicketkeeper has a brilliant view of the game. That can add to your decision making as you can see first-hand how the wicket is behaving and the way bowlers are bowling," Buttler added.

Buttler went on to talk about his team ahead of their first match against Punjab Kings.

"We have lots of variety in the team this season with some world-class all-rounders like Ben Stokes and Chris Morris and a new captain. Sanju (Samson) is very exciting player and has a long affiliation with the franchise.

"He is a very calm person and likes to have fun. I am sure he would try and get across that to the team. There will be a lot of passion in his leadership," he said.

"I strongly believe Ben Stokes will be the X-factor for our team in this season," Buttler signed off.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain Virat Kohli was full of praises for his team-mates, especially Harshal Patel and Glenn Maxwell, as the Bengaluru outfit got off to a rollicking start in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 by defeating defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) by two wickets in Chennai on Friday.

RCB roped in Maxwell at the auction for a whopping INR 14.25 crore despite the Aussie having a torrid IPL 2020 with Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). However, Maxwell answered his critics in style while showing why the RCB management was spot on to spend heavily for his acquisition.

After the IPL 2021 season opener against MI, RCB captain Kohli said that Maxwell’s knock of 39 runs off 28 deliveries was the game-changer as he put the pressure back on the bowlers. Kohli revealed that RCB wanted to allow Maxwell to play a few deliveries before bringing his array of shots into the game rather than slogging from the word go while adding it was important to play the strongest side in the tournament (MI) and test themselves against the best.

“We won the first match last year as well that we played. It was important to play against the strongest side in the competition and test our side. Everyone was involved in this game, and when you win by two wickets, it means that everyone has gone in and played. A lot of options for me as well that helped bringing the game back. The pitch was looking decent in the first half, but to be honest, with the old ball the length ball was difficult to get away. That is why those partnerships between Maxi and me and then between AB and Maxi was really important. It's not a pitch where you can just hit through the line. You have to be smart with picking the gaps and running hard. Playing in Chennai you have to be respectful of that. The shot that Pollard got out to, in Wankhde it would've sailed into the crowds,” Kohli said in the post-match presentation on Friday.

“We came back well and used the conditions well. They came back well too after losing Rohit early and those last six overs for us were probably the best six we've ever had. We brought Harshal in a trade from Delhi. He is relishing the responsibility and is clear with his plans. He was the difference today. He is going to be our death bowler. As a captain you want players with clarity, and he has that. Jamieson started off well, Yuzi was good, Siraj was good too. In T20 cricket, clarity at the top of your mark is all you as for as a captain. Harshal was very clear with that and it was his day today.

“We wanted Maxi to bat at four. Rajat is a very solid player. He is an exciting player, plays spin well too. The thinking was that we wanted to give Maxi some balls at the start and not get him slogging right away. You saw the result today of him playing 10-15 balls. His innings was the game-changer. Had he stayed in we would've finished a couple of overs earlier. The opposition then gets nervous about AB. We have depth in the batting which we want to utilize. AB is probably the only one in the team who is so versatile. And he does it on slow wickets what not many can do. In a tricky chase you need experience at the back, and the opposition knows that if he doesn't get out, the bowlers get in a different headspace,” the RCB skipper added.
