"Everyone wants to know about IPL. As cricketers, we all want to play. But we should see the situation. I don't decide about the IPL, but we should first think about the country. The situation needs to get better first then we can talk about the IPL. Let life get back to normal first, and for that, all of us have to be disciplined," Rohit said after Chahal asked him about the IPL.

"I haven't seen Bombay like this before," Rohit showed the deserted streets of Mumbai.

"As cricketers, we don't get time with family. So much of tours and cricket is there. This is a time to spend with them and loads of it," he added.

Rohit Sharma was set to make his comeback in this edition's IPL after resting in South Africa and New Zealand's half of the series.

Mumbai Indians has won the most number of IPL trophies. They have lifted the coveted trophy four times.

India currently has over 700 cases of the novel coronavirus, whereas the pandemic has killed 17 people across the nation.

IPL can wait till situation gets normal, says Rohit Sharma as India continues to battle accelerated COVID-19

The Board of Control for BCCI (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly on Tuesday said that he ‘can’t say anything’ about the fate of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 amid the nationwide lockdown as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to deteriorate with each passing day.

The BCCI had suspended the IPL from March 29 to April 15 after the Indian government suspended all visas, barring diplomatic and employment, which made it impossible for foreign players to participate in the cash-rich tournament. Furthermore, the government suspended all international and domestic flights in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19.

"I can't say anything at the moment. We are at the same place where we were on the day we postponed. Nothing has changed in the last 10 days. So, I don't have an answer to it. Status quo remains," Ganguly told PTI on Tuesday.

The former Indian skipper also ruled out the possibility of holding IPL 2020 later in the year given the situation surrounding the novel coronavirus improves in the coming months.

"You can't plan anything. The FTP is scheduled. It's there and you can't change the FTP. All around the world, cricket and more so sports have stopped," he said.

Ganguly also expressed his doubts on whether the losses that all stakeholders will suffer could be covered by insurance.

"I am not sure whether you can get insurance money. Because this is a government lockdown. I am not sure whether a government lockdown is covered by insurance or not.

"We will have to see. We have not assessed all these things. At this point of time, it is very difficult for me to give any concrete answer," Ganguly said.

BCCI, also the world’s richest cricket board, has not yet provided any donations to fight back against the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Ganguly said that he will have a discussion with BCCI Secretary Jay Shah to chalk out the best options.

"I haven't had a discussion with Jay. Let's see. We will assess the situation, follow directives and see what happens," he said.

"If the government asks us, we will certainly hand over the facility. Anything that is need of the hour, we will do it. There is absolutely no problem," he asserted.

Indian fast bowler Shanthakumaran Sreesanth's life ban for his alleged involvement in the spot-fixing scandal has been reduced to seven years. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Ombudsman Justice (retired) DK Jain announced today.

The Indian cricketer has been accused of alleged involvement in the 2013 Indian Premier League (IPL) spot-fixing scandal and was banned along with Rajasthan Royals teammates Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan.

Sreesanth has maintained that all the charges against him are false.

But now the pacer, who will be 37-year-old by the time ban ends, can have a sigh of relief as he can resume his cricketing career either as a player, coach or commentator from next year.

"I am of the view that banning Sreesanth from participating in any kind of commercial cricket or from associating with any activities of BCCI or its affiliates, for a period of 7 years with effect from September 13, 2013," ANI quoted Justice (retired) DK Jain as saying.

Justice (retired) Jain also made it clear that the pacer has already served the punishment for six years, hence the ban now will end in August next year.

"The date from which, the period of ban imposed by the Disciplinary Committee had commenced, will meet the ends of justice," Justice Jain added.

Earlier, the apex court observed that the conduct of Sreesanth, facing a life ban, in the entire episode was "not good".

In March this year, the top court had set aside the BCCI disciplinary committee's to reconsider order imposing a life ban on Sreesanth for his alleged involvement in the matter.

He has played 27 tests, 53 one-day internationals and 10 Twenty20 internationals, claiming a total of 169 wickets.

Rahul Gandhi was on Saturday granted bail by a Patna court in connection with a defamation case filed by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi over his 'all thieves have Modi surname' remark.

Gandhi was released on Rs 10,000 surety amount by Patna court.

Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Gandhi said, "Those who stand against the ideology of RSS and Narendra Modi, they face attacks and court cases. My fight is to save the Constitution and stand with poor, farmers and labours of India, that is why I am here today. I will stand with the voice of India which was being suppressed."

Sushil Modi had filed a case before the court in April this year, taking exception to a sarcastic remark made by Gandhi at an election rally in Karnataka's Kolar district that all thieves had the surname Modi.

Here, Gandhi was indirectly referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, bank-fraud accused Nirav Modi and former Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi.

Meanwhile, the Gandhi scion publically announced his resignation from the post of Congress president in a four-page letter posted on Twitter on July 03.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Monday once again rued that young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant would be sorely missed during the ODI World Cup, commencing on May 30 in the UK.

"India will miss Pant in the World Cup. I don't know in whose place but he will be missed," Ganguly told reporters at Eden Gardens.

The explosive 21-year-old Pant was a notable omission from the India's World Cup-bound squad as the national selectors picked an experienced Dinesh Karthik as the second choice wicketkeeper.

Pant had a stupendous season amassing 488 runs from 16 matches at an average of 37.53 and with a strike rate of 162.66 in the Indian Premier League 2019.

With Kedar Jadhav sustaining a shoulder injury during an IPL match between Chennai and Punjab, the medical staff is opting a wait and watch policy on his availability for India's World Cup opener against South Africa on June 5.

Asked whether Pant's name can crop up in case Jadhav fails to get fit, Ganguly said: "He is injured. It's difficult to say whether he will get fit or not. I hope Kedar gets fit."

Ganguly is the advisor of IPL franchise Delhi Capitals, a team for which Pant recently scored massive runs although it failed to make the final.

"We played exceptionally well but two other teams made the final. The season just got over, we have not thought about it (the way forward)," Ganguly said about their loss to Chennai Super Kings in the Qualifier 2.

Ganguly rated Chennai's MS Dhoni and Mumbai's Rohit Sharma as two best captains of the IPL.

"Two best captains of the IPL and one of them won. Everyone will learn under pressure. Both CSK and Mumbai were fantastic teams," said Ganguly.

It was a funny game in which the two teams kept passing the trophy to each other is how Chennai skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni described the IPL final, in which Mumbai prevailed by one run.

The see-saw game kept the fans enthralled as the winner-takes-all contest went to the wire and was decided in the last ball of the tournament on Sunday.

Initially, it was Chennai which had an edge but Mumbai came back in middle overs. Again it was Shane Watson who seemed to have tilted it in Chennai's favour but incredible pace bowling by Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga finally swung it in Mumbai's favour.

"Today was one game we should've done slightly better. It was quite a funny game, we were passing the trophy to each other. Both committed mistakes, and eventually, the winning team was the one that committed one mistake less," said Dhoni after Chennai fell short by just one run, chasing 150.
Dhoni has led the Chennai to eight finals but he was far from a contended skipper.

"As a team, we had a good season. But we need to go back and reflect. Wasn't one of those years where we played very good cricket. Middle order never clicked, but somehow we managed," he said.

IPL 2019 final: Chennai and Mumbai were passing the trophy to each other, says MS Dhoni

The IPL prize distribution ceremony almost plunged into a controversy after CoA member Diana Edulji expressed her wish to give away the winners' trophy, going against the convention.

Eventually, as per existing convention, acting president CK Khanna handed over the winners' trophy to Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma.

While Committee of Administrators (CoA) chief Vinod Rai didn't attend the IPL final between Mumbai and Chennai, other two members Diana and Lt Gen (retd) Ravi Thodge were present in Hyderabad.

"Edulji gave away the winners' trophy at the Women's T20 Challenge in Jaipur and she wanted to give away the trophy here also.

However, it was learnt that Khanna showed an e-mail from acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhry to IPL COO Hemang Amin, stating that convention of president giving away the trophy could be followed," a BCCI official privy to the incident told PTI on the conditions of anonymity.

When Rai was asked for his view on the issue, he in turn asked whether there was any need to change the convention.

"It was Lt Gen Thodge, who categorically told the former India women's team captain that acting president Khanna should be allowed to handover the trophy and the matter should be put to an end. She was certainly not happy but had to go with the majority view in this case," said another BCCI source.

Rai and Edulji have had their share of differences on most of the issues and the CoA has been able to take a few concrete decisions of late after Lt Gen Thodge joined the panel.

When Khanna was contacted, he refused to comment on the issue while calls to Edulji went unanswered.

I just went by the cheers of the crowd," said Nita Ambani during the post-match presentation. "All the times Rohit has been the captain in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019. Congratulations for leading our team so beautifully," she added. Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma picked Lasith Malinga over Hardik Pandya in the last over of the Indian Premier League 2019 final. Rohit was ready to carry the cross had the decision to use Malinga backfired but had a gut feeling that Malinga will be able to pull it off. The Sri Lankan repaid the faith his skipper showed in him defending nine runs off the final over. Rohit said, "Malinga is a champion, he has been doing it for many years for us. I was thinking of Hardik for the final over, but I wanted to back someone who has been in that situation for us before, and Malinga has been there many times." Mumbai's other owner and Nita's son Akash Ambani said, "That's Lasith Malinga for you. He's the only bowler to have done it for 10-12 years now. He's a special man in our team." IPL 2019 Final: Here's what Mumbai co-owner Nita Ambani did during the final over

Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma has explained why he picked Lasith Malinga over Hardik Pandya in the last over of the Indian Premier League 2019 final.

Rohit's side defeated Chennai by one run to lift the glorious trophy on Sunday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Chennai's Shane Watson almost took his team over the line. In the last over, Watson got run out which ended his knock of 59-ball 80. With two runs needed off the final ball, Lasith Malinga trapped Shardul Thakur leg-before to secure Mumbai's win by one run.

"When the decision comes off, it looks all nice. It can backfire also. At that stage, I wanted to go with experience and Malinga has been in that situation a million times," the four-time IPL champion skipper said at the post-match media interaction.

"I am learning in every game, every time I take the field. I have to credit the team as well, it is up to the boys to step up otherwise the captain is made to look foolish," Rohit added.

The situation was eerily similar to Rohit had faced in 2017 final when Mumbai beat the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants by one run in another thrilling finish.

Then it was former Australian pacer Johnson, who defended 11 runs in the final over to pull-off a one-run victory.

It was that deja vu moment for the Rohit Sharma.

"I clearly remember when we won here in 2017, it was Mitchell Johnson who bowled that last over and defended only 10 (sic) runs. So yes, sometimes you've got to go with only instincts, sometimes you've got to go a little backwards and think what these experienced players have done and what they bring to the table," Rohit said.

IPL 2019 Final: Rohit Sharma explains his gamble of picking Lasith Malinga over Hardik Pandya in last over

Lasith Malinga kept his nerve with the final ball as Mumbai beat Chennai by one run to clinch a record fourth Indian Premier League title Sunday.

After Shane Watson hit a blistering 80, Chennai needed two runs off the last ball to overtake Mumbai's 149-8. But the Sri Lankan veteran trapped Shardul Thakur lbw to claim the landmark win.

Malinga gave away 49 runs in his four overs but the last two overs by the Sri Lankan and fellow pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who took 2-14, were decisive.

The wicket extended the 35-year-old Malinga's record as the all-time best IPL bowler with 170 wickets from 122 games.

"About Malinga, that's what champions do," said Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma.

"I had confidence in him despite a poor third over. He also had confidence he could do it," Sharma said of his veteran paceman who is an expert at bowling yorkers in the death overs.

"I thought we could use Hardik Pandya for the 20th over, but I wanted to back someone who has done it for us and Malinga has been in that situation and done it."

Sharma bowled over

Sharma said Mumbai's bowling played a key role throughout the tournament.

"At different stages, our bowlers put their hands up and brought us back in the game.

"We backed our ability and our skills, and that's probably why we got rewards."

West Indies batsman Kieron Pollard smashed an unbeaten 41 off 25 balls to set up the Mumbai total after they elected to bat first.

South African captain Faf du Plessis came out all guns blazing to give Chennai a brisk start with his 26 off 13 deliveries.

But Ishan Kishan sent Chennai dangerman MS Dhoni back to the dugout with a direct throw at the bowlers' end to put the defending champions in trouble at 82-4. Dhoni made just two.

Watson batted through the Chennai innings until he was run out in the final over going for an unlikely second run. He smashed four sixes and eight fours in his 59-ball knock.

Chennai leg-spinner Imran Tahir took 2-23 to surpass fellow South African Kagiso Rabada at the top of this year's IPL bowlers chart with 26 wickets. Tahir was also the first 40-year-old to appear in an IPL final.

Deepak Chahar took three wickets while fellow quick Shardul Thakur took two.

"It was not a 150 wicket, but the bowlers kept us in the hunt. They kept getting wickets when it was really needed," said Dhoni, whose team has won three titles from eight finals.

The Chennai captain indicated that changes could be made in the batting line-up for next season.

"To be consistent next year, we will have to really think hard. There is nothing against the bowlers, but the batsmen could've done better."

Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, an advisor to the Mumbai team, nervously watched the finale, frequently burying his head in his hands.

"The key moment was Dhoni's run-out," he said.

"But also in patches when Bumrah bowled those critical balls to even out Malinga's one poor over was also crucial.

"And the last over, I thought Malinga finished the game out beautifully."

Mumbai won the IPL in 2013 and 2015 -- both against Chennai -- and again in 2017 when they beat Rising Pune Supergiant by one run.

Australia's David Warner topped the tournament's batting chart with 692 runs, including eight fifties and a 100 not out in 12 IPL games this season.

West Indian allrounder Andre Russell was named most valuable player as he amassed 510 runs to single-handedly drive Kolkata Knight Riders' campaign. Kolkata ended fifth in the eight-team table.

IPL 2019: MS Dhoni became most successful keeper in IPL history

Familiar foes and the two most successful teams of the IPL, Mumbai and Chennai, clash in a mouth-watering final, following a rather eventful season that produced some unprecedented moments on the field. It can't be disputed that Mumbai go into the final as the favourites, having beaten Chennai as many as three times earlier in the tournament including in the Qualifier 1. However, statistics count for little going into the title fight with both teams being in the situation before multiple times.

IPL 2019 Final: Who will win between Chennai and Mumbai

Shreyas Iyer, captain of Delhi team said that he is proud of his team after losing to Chennai in the Qualifier 2 of Indian Premier League 2019 on Friday.

Chennai won the match and will play the final against Rohit Sharma-led side on May 12.

He said, "We did really well to come this far. Been a dream season for us and this is just a start. Time to grow further."

Defending champions Chennai entered their eighth IPL final and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni credited the clinical effort of his bowing unit for setting up the platform for the comfortable win over Delhi in the Qualifier 2.

Opting to bowl, Chennai first restricted Delhi to 147 for nine and then chased down the target with six wickets in hand to set up a clash against Mumbai in the IPL final in Hyderabad on Sunday.

"The crucial part was to keep getting wickets. The credit needs to go to the bowlers. The captain only asks this is what I need. Then it's up to them to figure out how to bowl, and they have to put in the hard yards," Dhoni said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

"Thanks to the bowling department for where we are this season. I would have preferred it if the openers finished it off. Once they got the required rate below 6 an over, there was no reason to play big shots and get out. They did the hard yards," he added.

Dhoni also lauded the entire Chennai team for producing a clinical performance when it mattered.

"It's the usual route, last year was the exception. The kind of response from the boys today was brilliant. The way we batted to get 140-plus runs was very nice," he said.

"The spinners got some turn, and we kept getting wickets at the right time."

Delhi captain Shreyas Iyer, on the contrary, blamed his batting department for the loss.

"We had a disappointing start, losing two wickets in the powerplay, and it was hard to recover from that. They have amazing spinners. But we've had a great season," he said.

"None of the batsmen took the initiative to take the team through and there wasn't a partnership buidling. Disappointing for us but a good learning."

Iyer, though, was about the pitch on offer this season at their home turf at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium.

"It's something to think about (the Delhi pitch). We didn't win too many home games, but we can't complain about pitches. We've been practising a lot on slow wickets. As professionals we can't give excuses," he said.

"I think we've learned a lot, looking at seniors like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma leading their teams. It's a proud moment for me, standing with them at the toss. They talk to me, share their experiences, and that's great for me."

Man-of-the-match Faf du Plessis, who hit a 39-ball 50 during the chase, said Chennai's experience of winning big games did the trick even though they didn't have a very good outing in the last phase of the tournament this season.

"We didn't have the best run in the last five or six games, but we do have a lot of confidence as a team that's won a lot of big games. We drew a lot of strength from that," he said.

"Our strength is to get partnerships going and extend that, even if we take our time initially. We've got a lot of good batsmen down the order, and we back them to catch up with the required rate."

IPL 2019, Qualifier 2: Delhi to fight for final berth against Chennai

Defending champions defeated Delhi by six wickets in the Qualifier 2 of Indian Premier League 2019 to set up the summit clash of the season against Mumbai team.

Chasing a total of 148 to win, Chennai openers Shane Watson and Fad du Plessis scored half-centuries to give their side a stable start.

Dwayne Bravo scored the winning runs at Visakhapatnam's ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium and Chennai will play the final match on May 12.

Du Plessis scored his third half-century in this season of IPL before Trent Boult got hold of him in the 11th over.

Soon after scoring his second half-century in this season, Watson (50) gave away his wicket.

Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu then came out to bat but Raina too gave away his wicket after scoring just 11 runs.

After Raina's dismissal, skipper Dhoni took the field. Rayudu and Dhoni played steadily and added another 19 runs on the scoreboard.

However, in the 19th over, Dhoni tried to finish off the match by hitting a six but gave away an easy catch to Keemo Paul off Ishant Sharma delivery.

Dwayne Bravo then joined Rayudu and both took their side over the line to register a six-wicket victory.

Earlier, MS Dhoni-led Chennai dished out a clinical bowling effort to restrict Delhi to 147 for nine.

Shaw's dismissal opened the floodgates as Delhi lost three wickets in quick time to slump to 75 for four in 11.3 overs.

Dhawan was the next to depart, caught by Mahendra Singh Dhoni off Harbhajan and then Colin Munro (27) was holed at deep square-leg by Bravo off Jadeja as the South African went for a slog sweep.

Skipper Shreyas Iyer (13 of 18) tried to anchor the innings but he too fell while going for a big shot, caught by Suresh Raina off Imran Tahir (1/28) in the 12th over.

Rutherford became Harbhajan's second victim, followed by Keemo Paul who was cleaned up by Bravo's perfect yorker in the 18th over.

The onus was on hard-hitting Pant to take Delhi to a challenging total but he too failed to cope up with the pressure, caught by Bravo at long-on off Chahar.
