Indian pacer Mohammed Shami was subjected to horrific abuse on social media after the Indian cricket team's loss against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2021 last year. Babar Azam-led Pakistan had thrashed India by ten wickets in the game to bring an end to their losing streak against the arch-rivals in World Cup matches.

Shami, who was part of India's playing XI for the high-profile clash, had an average outing in the game. The senior fast bowler was trolled brutally on social media and was abused by many. Several former and current Indian cricketers had rallied behind Shami and extended support to him.

Recalling the abuse faced on social media, Shami said the trolls who disrespect a player based on his religion can never be true fans of the game or real Indians. The fast bowler also asserted that he never lets comments from such people affect himself or his game.

“There is no cure for this kind of thinking. Those who troll (on religion) are not real fans, nor are they real Indians. If you consider a player as a hero and then behave this way, you are not being an Indian supporter. And I feel one should not get hurt by comments made by such people," Shami was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

“There was just one thing going on in my mind. If I consider someone as my role model, I will never speak ill about that person. And in case someone is saying something hurtful to me, he can’t be my fan or a fan of the Indian team. So actually, I don’t mind what he says,” he added.

It was not the first time that an Indian athlete was subjected to vile abuse on social media for his performance on the field. However, Shami said the players know what they are and their duty is to play for the country and they do not need to prove anything to anyone.

“We know what we are, we don’t need to say what India means to us because we represent the country and we fight for our country. So we don’t need to prove anything to anyone by saying or reacting to such trolls," Shami said.

India suffered a terrible top-order collapse against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2021 clash as they were left reeling on 31/3 inside 6 overs before skipper Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant helped the team recover and post a total of 152 runs on the board. In reply, Pakistan chased down the target without losing a wicket as Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan slammed unbeaten fifties apiece.

Trolls are not real Indians: Mohammed Shami on facing online abuse after defeat against Pakistan in T20 WC

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has had a fabulous start to his tenure as India's full-time captain. Rohit, who too over as the T20I captain of the side in November last year, has led the team to three back-to-back T20I series wins at home against New Zealand, West Indies and Sri Lanka while also winning his first ODI series as full-time captain 3-0 against West Indies.

India have been unstoppable so far in white-ball cricket under Rohit's captaincy. The Men in Blue defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in the third and final T20I on Sunday to complete a 3-0 whitewash against the visitors and equal the record for most T20I wins in a row. It was India's 11th consecutive victory in the shortest format.

While India have been a force to reckon with under Rohit's leadership, his personal form has come under the scanner. Rohit failed to score runs consistently in the recently-concluded T20I series against Sri Lanka and his numbers in the last three T20I series have also not been great as per his standards.

Former India selector Saba Karim has urged the Indian skipper to not lose focus on his batting and treat captaincy as only an added responsibility. Karim said Rohit's spot in the playing XI is because of his batting and that the Indian skipper should work on his game ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 where his runs will be crucial for the team.

"Rohit Sharma is in the XI because of his batting. Captaincy is an additional responsibility. He should not lose focus with regards to batting. Lot of times we have seen that captains are not able to perform as well in their primary skill. This should not happen," Karim said on the Khelneeti podcast.

“This is just the starting phase for Rohit Sharma. He will gradually realize how important his runs are for the team. His performance will be crucial in Australia (during the T20 World Cup), where the grounds are big and the opposition have top-quality bowlers. So yes, Rohit Sharma needs to work on this area," he added.

India will next take on Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series that gets underway from March 04. It will be Rohit's first major assignment as India's Test captain and the Hitman will be hoping to get off to a winning start in the longest format as well.

Captaincy an added responsibility, Rohit Sharma should not lose focus on his batting: Ex-India selector

India demolished Sri Lanka in the just-concluded three T20Is at home. Rohit Sharma-led Indian team inflicted a whitewash over the hapless Dasun Shanaka-led Islanders to continue their winning streak in the format, which is now joint-most along with Afghanistan (12).

In the absence of former captain Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, white-ball vice-captain KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Md Shami, etc., Indian youngsters such as Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Avesh Khan made a mark to finish off the series with a 3-0 scoreline. Iyer was the most outstanding performer for the national side, ending with scores of 57* (28), 74* (44) and 73* (45) along with remaining unbeaten throughout the course of the series.

Suryakumar, the way he has been batting, he is got to be included. It is just the plus, plus as far as the team is concerned.

“There are so many options. And it allows you to go in with pure bowlers and not bowlers who can bat. With a top-batting line-up, you can can go in with someone like Mohammed Siraj or Avesh Khan, who is not known as a batsman. You might think in terms of all-out attack,” he further said.

Virat Kohli can't be replaced: Gavaskar on in-form Shreyas Iyer's batting position for Team India in T20Is

India have a very settled top order in T20Is heading into the upcoming edition of the ICC T20 World Cup which is scheduled to take place in Australia this year. While the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant are all but confirmed to feature in the top four, there is intense competition when it comes to remaining batting positions with a number of star batters in the fray.

The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson and Venkatesh Iyer among others are strong contenders for spots in the middle-order. Iyer, who was in magnificent form in the recently-concluded three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka with three back-to-back unbeaten half-centuries has increased the selection headache for the Indian team ahead of the T20 World Cup.

While the opening combination is all but certain to be that of skipper Rohit and vice-captain KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan has also presented a strong case with his ability to strike the ball from the word go and provide destructive starts at the top of the order. However, former Australia spinner Brad Hogg believes former skipper Virat Kohli should be opening the batting for the team if he part of the XI in T20Is.

Open with Kohli, Iyer at 3 and Pant at 4: Hogg

Hogg said Kohli should open the batting with Rohit for India in T20Is while Iyer can bat at number three and Pant can be sent in at number four. The former Australia spinner suggested Rahul be slotted in the middle order while suggesting that Suryakumar, who has been in terrific form over the last few months, can also play at number 5. Hogg said India can then play two all-rounders in Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya at 6 and 7.

"For me, if you're going to have Kohli in the team, he should be opening the batting with Rohit. I'd like to have Shreyas Iyer coming in at No.3 and Pant at No.4. Have to try to get KL Rahul in there as well at some stage. If Pandya is fit, he and Jadeja can feature at No.6 and 7," Hogg said.

The former Australia spinner also gave his take on what should India's bowling attack look like heading into the T20 World Cup Down Under this year.

Rohit Sharma-led Team India had a dream run in the Sri Lanka T20Is. After whitewashing West Indies in the white-ball series at home, Rohit & Co. hosted the Dasun Shanaka-led Islanders in the three-match series and ended up further extending their unbeaten run in the format (12).

There were a lot of positives for Team India as they are preparing well for the 2022 T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia later this year. While Shreyas Iyer made the most of his opportunities -- in the absence of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant -- Avesh Khan, Md Siraj, Ishan Kishan, Ravi Bishnoi also did well. Sanju Samson, on the other hand, didn't deliver as per expectations. While the Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper made a stunning 25-ball 39 in the second and penultimate encounter, he fell for a 12-ball 18 in the final T20I on Sunday.

Thus, disappointed by Samson's mediocre series versus the Islanders, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo, "He obviously hasn't grabbed his opportunities. Yesterday (Saturday) and today (Sunday)'s game was a good, good opportunity for him to stake his claim as a third wicketkeeping option or as a batter."

'I really feel sad' - Wasim Jaffer disappointed with Sanju Samson's run in Sri Lanka T20Is

India beat Sri Lanka in 3rd T20I to clinch series 3-0, equal record for most T20I wins on the trot

India's pace attack had undergone a massive transformation in Tests under Virat Kohli a few years ago and there has been no looking back ever since. India ave always craved for away for all kinds of pacers but have lacked serious quality in the fast-bowling department. However, the days of misery are long behind as the Men in Blue now boast of some brilliant fast bowling depth across all formats of the game.

From a tearaway pacer in Jasprit Bumrah to the likes of Deepak Chahar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who can swing the ball from the word go, India have both quality and versatility in their pace department. The rise of the likes of Mohammed Siraj, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan and Prasidh Krishna is only going to make India's pace attack more deadly in the days to come.

After a disappointing show at the T20 World Cup 2021 last year, where the Indian pacers struggled massively in picking regular wickets against quality opposition, India have added some fresh faces to their pace arsenal, which has been firing all cylinders in limited-overs cricket.

While Bumrah has remained the spearhead with his remarkable consistency and ability to nail yorkers at will, Bhuvneshwar seems to have found his mojo back after enduring a rough patch in his international career. However, it is the new blood in the Indian team's pace department which looks set to make India a formidable bowling unit when they travel to Australian shores for the T20 World Cup next year.

Harshal Patel

Harshal Patel's rise has been nothing short of a fairy tale. A tall seamer with a brilliant outswinger, Harshal's entry into the Indian team came after his remarkable campaign in IPL 2021 where he finished as the highest wicket-taker. While his confidence has shot up, he has matured into a fearless bowler and has been effective in the death as well as with the new ball.

Deepak Chahar

A powerplay bank in a true sense, Deepak Chahar's value in the current Indian team can never be undermined. He might have missed out on making the cut for the T20 World Cup last year bit might be one of the first names in the squad if fit this year. Chahar's ability to swing the ball from the word go and provide crucial breakthroughs in the powerplay make him a valuable asset. He can also be very handy with the bat lower down the order.

Mohammed Siraj

Mohammed Siraj was once considered an outcast at Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and there were serious questions over his quality. In the last couple of years, the right-arm pacer has answered his critics and shut them down permanently with some memorable performances across all formats. He can swing the ball into a right-hander and has also got a great bounce up his sleeves. However, what makes Siraj stand out is his ability to bowl tirelessly and not let his pace drop throughout.

Prasidh Krishna

Another right-arm pacer, who has been around the corner for a while now. Prasidh Krishna was an unknown entity when Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) gave him a chance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and he has since developed into a world-beater. Krishna can nail yorkers and hit the lengths consistently while bowling at an impressive pace. He also has the ability to bowl bouncers at will and is all set to be groomed further.

Avesh Khan

Avesh Khan is a versatile pacer, who can move the ball new ball in and away from the batter. He can also bowl brilliant yorkers and has good pace. In IPL 2021, Avesh proved why he can be one for the future with sensational performances throughout the season. Ishan Kishan admitted to hospital after being hit on head by a nasty bouncer during 2nd T20I against SL

Rohit Sharma-led Team India beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets to win the second and penultimate T20I, in Dharamshala, on Saturday evening (February 26) and clinch the series with an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Opting to bowl first, Rohit-led India bowlers didn't have an easy ride versus the Islanders. Pathum Nissanka, who fell for a golden duck in the series opener, and Danushka Gunathilaka's opening stand (67 runs) ensured a good start for the visitors. While they did survive some close calls initially, the duo found their rhythm as the innings progressed. Against the run of play, Ravindra Jadeja struck to remove Gunathilaka for 38.

When it seemed Indian bowlers had managed to restrict the Lankans, skipper Dasun Shanaka's 19-ball 47 and Nissanka's calculative and well-compiled 53-ball 75 propelled SL to 183-5. Among Indian bowlers, Jadeja, Harshal Patel and Bhuvneshwar Kumar remained expensive.

In reply, India's chase started with Rohit departing for 1. Ishan Kishan also failed to get going to be dismissed for cheap. The onus, this, shifted on in-form Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson. While Samson took some time before launching some biggies, Iyer played a sensational inning -- with a flurry of boundaries at regular intervals along with smart rotation of strike.

While India lost Samson, courtesy a blinder by B Fernando, Jadeja-Iyer completed the formalities as Lankans continued to be sloppy on the field and gave plenty of boundary-balls. Jadeja dominated the unbroken fourth-wicket stand with Iyer (74 not out) to return with an 18-ball 45* (at a whopping strike-rate of 250).

With this win, India's best-ever winning streak in the format has now stretched to 11. Among Test-playing nations, Afghanistan top the list holding the first two spots. Now, India have joined the Afghans in the second position with 11 successive wins. If India inflict a clean sweep versus the Sri Lankans, they will come at par with Afghanistan at the top spot (12).

Jasprit Bumrah has grown in stature significantly with each passing year. He debuted in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2013 but hardly got regular appearances. In his first two seasons, Bumrah didn't play a massive role in Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians' (MI) campaign but slowly and steadily moved up the ladder, with good performances in domestic circuit and following his international debut in early 2016.

To date, Bumrah remains one of the most important players for the MI franchise. He has helped the Mumbai-based franchise win plenty of close encounters, and trophies, picking up 130 wickets in 106 matches at an impressive average of 23.03. Recently, in a conversation with R Ashwin on the wily spinner's Youtube channel, Bumrah spilled the beans on his relationship with Rohit and revealed how Hitman helped him in his growth.

He would give me important overs: Jasprit Bumrah reveals how Rohit Sharma helped in his growth

Rohit Sharma has had a dream start to his captaincy era. While Hitman has led the Men in Blue in only a handful of ODIs and is yet to start his Test captaincy era, the 34-year-old is on a winning spree as the captain in the shortest format.

After India defeated Sri Lanka by 62 runs in the series opener of the three T20Is, in Lucknow on Thursday (February 24), Rohit & Co. attained their best-ever unbeaten streak in the format (10). Ahead of the second and penultimate T20I between both sides in Dharamshala, on Saturday (February 26), Rohit has a few major milestones awaiting him.

If India manage to beat Sri Lanka in the 2nd T20I and take an unassailable lead in the series, it will not only be another series triumph for the Rohit-led side but Hitman will also have most wins in the format as an Indian captain. So far, Rohit has 15 wins from 16 encounters and is currently levelled with Eoin Morgan and Aaron Finch. Among Indian skippers, Rohit is already two ahead of Virat Kohli's tally (13) whereas MS Dhoni comes third (10 wins).

In addition, Rohit is just 19 away from joining an elite list -- comprising Morgan, Finch, Dhoni, Kohli and Babar Azam -- to have 1,000, or more, runs as captain in T20Is. He will also become the second-quickest batter to reach the milestone, after Babar Azam (26 innings). Rohit fell just short of one innings of equalling the feat with the Pakistani. Among Indian captains, he looks set to become the fastest to be the milestone (in 27 innings if he does so on Saturday) -- with Kohli getting there in 30 innings whereas Dhoni was the slowest to get to 1,000 runs as captain in the format (57 innings).

Ind vs SL, 2nd T20I: Rohit Sharma on the cusp of achieving major milestones in Dharamshala

Team India will start a new era in Tests when they host Sri Lanka in a two-match series, starting on March 04 in Mohali. The forthcoming Tests will see the start of Rohit Sharma's captaincy in whites whereas a lot of youngsters will have the onus with four experienced campaigners dropped.

“Ideally, Kohli should go at No.3. Because the best batsman you see...Ricky Ponting goes at 3. Joe Root bats at No.4, but I feel he will be batting at No.3 in West Indies. Ind vs SL, 2nd T20I weather report: Will rain play spoilsport in second and penultimate tie in Dharamshala?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to question senior wicket-keeper batter Wriddhiman Saha about his recent explosive comments about India head coach Rahul Dravid and board president Sourav Ganguly. After being dropped from India's Test side for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka at home, Saha had made some startling revelations about his conversations with Dravid and Ganguly.

The BCCI believes Saha has violated the terms in his central contract with his comments criticising Ganguly and Dravid. While the wicket-keeper batter had made his conversation with head coach Dravid public after being told that he might not be considered for selection in the Test team anymore, Saha also revealed that he had received assurance from Ganguly about his spot in the Test team being safe as long as the current BCCI president was at the helm.

Saha has said to have breached clause 6.3 of BCCI's annual contract which states that - "Player shall not make any comments about the game, officials, incidents that happened in the game, use of technology, selection matters or any other matter related to the game which is in opinion of the BCCI is adverse to and /or not in the interest of the game, team or BCCI in any media."

As per a report in PTI, the board is likely to question the senior wicket-keeper batter and ask for an explanation over his comments. While the BCCI has extended support to Saha after he received insulting messages from an unnamed journalist, the board is not happy with him for making his conversations with Dravid public over selection matters.

"Yes, there is a possibility that BCCI could ask Wriddhiman as to how he spoke on selection matters being a centrally contracted cricketer," BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal was quoted as saying by PTI.

"As far as the president is concerned, he had tried to motivate him. The board might like to know what made him go public with his dressing room conversations with coach Dravid," he added.

Wriddhiman Saha likely to be questioned by BCCI over breach of central contract clause: Report

Young Indian opener Ishan Kishan credited captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid along with senior batter Virat Kohli for backing him during his rough patch in the recently-concluded T20I series against West Indies at home. In the absence of KL Rahul, Kishan was handed the opportunity to open for India in all three T20Is, however, he failed to impress.

Kishan had managed to score only 71 runs in the three matches against West Indies but bounced back to form with a splendid knock of 89 runs in the first T20I against Sri Lanka on Thursday. Kishan looked in phenomenal touch as he took the Sri Lankan bowlers to the cleaners during his brilliant knock.

Opening the batting with skipper Rohit, Ishan scored a stunning 89 runs off 56 balls laced with ten fours and three sixes. The duo posted a 111-run stand for the first wicket before Shreyas Iyer's quickfire 57 off 28 balls helped India post a huge total of 199 runs on the board.

With his brilliant knock, Kishan also went on to surpass Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul to create the record for the highest individual score by an Indian wicket-keeper in T20Is. The young left-hander spoke about his chats with the likes of Rohit and Dravid and revealed how they always stood by him during his rough patch against West Indies.

"The seniors in the team always want a youngster to be in good head space. Be it Rohit Sharma, Rahul Dravid or Virat Kohli, they know how a youngster feels if he doesn't perform well. When I did not perform well against the West Indies, they were standing there with me, telling me 'we know about your talent, we know what you can do for the team. We trust in you. Don't ever think that we are doubting you'," Ishan said at the press conference after India's victory in the first T20I against Sri Lanka.

"When a youngster hears such words, he gets a lot of confidence. These small things while you're batting at the nets, they guide you. They have told me it's not always about hitting hard. We learn all these things whether we score runs or not," he added.

Despite facing stiff competition for a spot in the squad, Kishan has managed to get a long rope owing to his talent and skills. He is likely to continue opening the batting for India in the remaining two T20Is against Sri Lanka. If he manages to continue his good form, Kishan can cement his spot in the T20 side in the run-up to the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia this year.

Also Read: Ishan Kishan surpasses MS Dhoni, Rishabh Pant to create new record for Team India in T20Is Despite facing stiff competition for a spot in the squad, Kishan has managed to get a long rope owing to his talent and skills. He is likely to continue opening the batting for India in the remaining two T20Is against Sri Lanka. If he manages to continue his good form, Kishan can cement his spot in the T20 side in the run-up to the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia this year.

Rohit Sharma & Co. thrash Sri Lanka in 1st T20I as India attain longest unbeaten streak in shortest format

Rohit Sharma, on Thursday (February 24), surpassed Martin Guptill and his predecessor Virat Kohli to become the highest run-getter in T20Is. Rohit achieved the big milestone before the half-way stage with a single off spinner Jeffrey Vandersay in the ninth over. While he was a bit slow to start his innings, as compared to Ishan, Hitman came to his own and attained the huge feat in the T20I format. He eventually fell for a 32-ball 44.

At the coin toss in the 1st T20I, in Lucknow, Rohit said, "We were looking to chase as well, not sure how the pitches in India plays. But we now know we need to bat well, the last time we played here, about 4 years back, the pitch played well. Nothing changes as far as the goals of the team are concerned, need to do the right things as a team, need to keep ticking all the right boxes. It's a challenge for the new gutsy - from the last game we played, we have 6 changes. Ruturaj was supposed to play, but he has a wrist injury and will not play today."

Rohit's captaincy era has started off with a bang so far in the white-ball format. He is yet to lose a single game and will hope to take India to their 10th consecutive win in T20Is -- which will be the Men in Blue's longest unbeaten streak -- during the series opener versus their Asian neighbours.

Ind vs SL: Rohit Sharma moves past Martin Guptill, Virat Kohli to become highest run-getter in T20Is

Ahead of India's upcoming three-match T20I series versus Sri Lanka, at home, veteran keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has lavished huge praise on the new pair of Rahul Dravid-Rohit Sharma as he feels they are taking Indian cricket in a fabulous direction.

After India's exit in the 2021 T20 World Cup, a lot has changed in Indian cricket. Initially, Rohit Sharma was named the T20I captain (with Virat Kohli stepping down from the post) and Rahul Dravid succeeded Ravi Shastri to become the head coach. Rohit then replaced Kohli as the ODI captain, after the latter's sacking, and has now taken over as the full-time captain after being appointed as the Test skipper as well.

Under Rohit-Dravid, India have not yet conceded a single game (winning six T20Is and three ODIs) as Karthik feels the duo have 'plugged small holes' that were previously present in the Indian team.

"What I enjoyed most was Rohit's captaincy," Karthik said in an interaction with the ICC. "I thought he led the team beautifully. Tactically very, very sound, and I thoroughly enjoyed the way the team played in the last couple of series against West Indies."

Karthik also stated that the duo of Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid have “plugged small holes” that were previously there in the Indian team.

"The new captain and there's a new coach, I think they are taking the team in a fabulous direction. They've plugged small holes, which were probably there previously, and that has been the beautiful part about it. And along the way, in the journey, they've managed to become No.1,” said Karthik.

Rohit Sharma eyes two big milestones as Team India gear up for T20I series versus Sri Lanka

Rohit Sharma-led team India will be looking to continue their winning run when they take on Sri Lanka in the first T20I of the upcoming three-match series in Lucknow on Thursday. India are scheduled to play three T20Is followed by two Tests against the visitors at home. India will be heading into the series on a confident note after clean sweeping West Indies 3-0 in their last T20 assignment.

However, India will be without a number of key players, who were part of the T20I series win against West Indies. While Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant have been rested, the likes of KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Chahar will miss the three-match series against Sri Lanka due to respective injuries.

While a number of stars are set to miss the series, India will have both Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah back in the squad for the three T20Is. While Jadeja is making a comeback after recovering from an injury, Bumrah had been rested from the T20Is against West Indies and is all set to return.

With no Kohli, Rahul and Suryakumar in the squad, India is likely to hand more opportunities to Ruturaj Gaikwad, who can open the batting with skipper Rohit Sharma or Ishan Kishan. Shreyas Iyer can take Kohli's number 3 spot while Deepak Hooda or Sanju Samson can be asked to replace Suryakumar Yadav in the middle-order.

With Jadeja making his comeback, he is likely to bat at no.6 and will have Venkatesh Iyer in the lower-middle order to help him in finishing games. Hooda might not feature in the first game if the team management decides to give both Gaikwad and Samson an extended run to prove their worth.

With no Chahar in the squad, Harshal Patel is likely to feature in all three matches and will comprise the pace attack along with the experienced Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Bhuvneshwar has been impressive in his last few matches and will be hoping to continue his fine form with the ball against Sri Lanka.

Yuzvendra Chahal is likely to play as the lone spinner in the XI in the first T20I and might get rotated with Kuldeep Yadav in the upcoming matches.

India's predicted playing XI for 1st T20I against Sri Lanka:

Rohit Sharma (c), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (wk), Sanju Samson, Ravindra Jadeja, Venkatesh Iyer, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah (vc), Harshal Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal

Ruturaj Gaikwad to open, Ravindra Jadeja returns: India's predicted playing XI for 1st T20I against Sri Lanka

Indian captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday (February 23) said Sanju Samson is definitely in consideration in India's squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022. The talented wicket-keeper batter, who has failed to cement his spot in the Indian team despite being handed several opportunities in the past, has been included in India's T20 squad for the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka at home.

The T20I series between the two sides is all set to get underway in Lucknow from February 24 (Thursday). In the absence of the likes of KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, Samson is expected to bat in the middle-order and might also keep wickets for India in the series against Sri Lanka.

Captin Rohit lauded Samson for his skills and talent and said he has always managed to play knocks which have left fans on the moon. The Hitman believes Samson has the talent but needs to utilise it in a better manner to play regularly for the Indian team and cement his spot in the side.

“Speaking of Samson, I think you know that guy has got talent man. Whenever we have seen him bat in IPL and all of that, he has just produced an innings where everyone goes over the moon watching that inning,” Rohit said in a virtual press conference on Wednesday.

“He has got the skill-set to succeed. Now that is the whole point about this sport, a lot of people have skill-set, have talent, but it is how you utilise them is the most critical part and I think, it is up to Sanju to understand how he wants to utilise the talent and how he can maximise it," he added.

While many believe Samson is not in India's plans as far as the T20 World Cup 2022 in concerned, Rohit explained how the wicket-keeper batter's ability to play big shots makes him a valuable asset for the team in Australia.

The next edition of the T20 World Cup will be played Down Under where big-hitters will play a huge role in their team's success. Rohit lauded Samson for his stroke play and praised him for his backfoot shots.

“I hope we give him that confidence when he gets playing for us, and whenever he gets an opportunity I hope he understands that and definitely he is under consideration, which is why he is part of this team," said Rohit.

“His back-foot play is superb, some of the shots you must have seen during the IPL, the pick-up pull, the cut shots, standing and delivering over bowler’s head.

“Those kinds of shots are not easy to play and I believe when we go to Australia, you need those kind of shot-making ability and Samson does has it in him. I just hope that he utilises his potential to the maximum,” he added.

Virat Kohli had become a household name after India embarked upon a new era following their triumph in the 2011 ODI World Cup. The Indian batter had jumped up the ranks and became the mainstay of Indian batting post the retirements of stalwarts such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, etc.

However, Kohli endured a horrible Test series in England; his first-ever outing in whites in the country. In India's five-match Test series versus hosts England, Kohli returned with 134 runs in 10 innings at a dismal average of 13.40. Following the series, a lot of questions were raised on the Indian superstar's credentials against incoming deliveries as he repeatedly fell prey to James Anderson & Co.

After the series, Kohli met Master Blaster Tendulkar and reworked his batting style. Recently, Tendulkar revealed how he came to a struggling Kohli's rescue.

"Virat is a good friend. So pleased to see how his career has shaped in the last decade. When I started, I was part of the team at that time and I could see that fire and hunger in him. And from thereon, how he has worked hard on his game and how he has changed his lifestyle to achieve what he has been able to… has been remarkable," Tendulkar told Graham Bensinger.

He recalled, "Virat has been tremendous. He has done tremendously well and there is so much to happen in his career from here on. We all at some stage in our career, need heroes and the players who have that impact on their generation, motivate so many guys."

"In 2014, I remember meeting him and we discussed a couple of things where I felt he could get better. I have always believed in helping players and sharing my knowledge, whatever inputs I have… I've always been open to that. Virat contacted me and he wanted me to spend some time with him which I did. And like I said, that each generation looks up to their hero. That's how you set your dreams and set your targets. Then you start chasing them," added Tendulkar.

'He must learn to not.....': Virat Kohli's childhood coach shares advice for Rohit Sharma

A lot has changed in Indian cricket following the 2021 T20 World Cup. Virat Kohli had already made it clear that he won't captain in the shortest format post the mega event and was succeeded by Rohit Sharma. Before the end of 2021, BCCI removed Kohli as the ODI captain as Rohit was appointed as the white-ball skipper.

As Kohli stepped down as the Test captain in mid-January, Rohit has now taken over as the all-format captain. While KL Rahul has been confirmed as Rohit's deputy in the shorter formats, there is no clarity on who will take up the vice-captaincy slot in Tests. Ahead of the India-Sri Lanka home T20Is, captain Rohit addressed the media and mentioned three names who are being looked upon as the possible contenders for Team India captaincy after him.

Rohit Sharma was recently appointed as India's permanent Test captain after Virat Kohli's departure. Rohit will be leading India in the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka at home which will be his first major assignment as the captain of the side in the longest format.

Speaking at the press conference ahead of the start of the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, which will be followed by the two Tests, Rohit was asked about his appointment as India's all-format captain. Team India have an action-packed calendar before the T20 World Cup, which is set to be held in Australia later this year. Before the national side gears up to face Sri Lanka in the three T20Is at home, as per a report, BCCI is planning to field more teams parallelly as more bilateral series have been added to Rohit Sharma-led India's schedule prior to the showpiece event Down Under.

After India host Sri Lanka in three T20Is and two Tests, the Indian players will take part in IPL 2022, which will be followed by five home T20Is versus South Africa, a one-off T20I versus hosts Ireland and fifth and final Test (from the incomplete 2021 series) against England, in the United Kingdom. India will then reportedly travel to West Indies and Zimbabwe. The Asia Cup will also take place during the same time, hence, the Indian cricket board might field two teams simultaneously; with a second-stringed team playing against Ireland and Zimbabwe.

"The discussions on bio-bubble breaks have already started. Every player has been communicated about the busy itinerary. They have been given time to think about when they would like to take a break. It's likely a depleted side will travel to Zimbabwe. Ideally, the Asia Cup will be the right tournament to play the first team, in order to get combinations right before the T20 World Cup," a BCCI official was quoted as saying by TOI.

During the last calendar year, Indian team had also played two sides parallelly when Virat Kohli's Test side were in England whereas Shikhar Dhawan-led Men in Blue travelled to Sri Lanka for a white-ball series, during mid-July 2021. Before that, India had fielded two teams at the same time during 1998 as well -- with one participating in the Commonwealth Games and the other in the Sahara Cup.

Before that, India had fielded two teams at the same time during 1998 as well -- with one participating in the Commonwealth Games and the other in the Sahara Cup.

BCCI planning to field two teams simultaneously as India to play more bilaterals before T20 WC: Report

Virat Kohli on Wednesday (February 23) shared a heartfelt note for former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh to thank him for his great gesture. Yuvraj had sent Kohli a special shoe and a handwritten letter to laud him for his exceptional captaincy tenure as the skipper of the Indian team across all formats of the game. After giving up T20I and ODI captaincy last year, Kohli had stepped down as India's Test captain in January this year.

Kohli thanked Yuvraj for his wonderful gesture and shared a heartfelt post for his former India teammate with a picture of the shoe sent by him. Kohli and Yuvraj share a great bond with each other and were part of some of the most memorable victories for the Indian cricket team together. While Yuvraj retired from all forms of cricket in 2019, Kohli continues to be an integral member of the Indian team across all formats.

Thanking Yuvraj for his gesture, Kohli called Yuvraj's life and his battle from cancer an inspiration for all. The batting maestro also recalled his early days in international cricket and thanked Yuvraj for his support.

"Yuvi Pa thank you for this wonderful gesture. Coming from someone who's seen my career unfold from day 1, it means a lot. Your life and your comeback from cancer was, is and will always be an inspiration for people in all walks of life not just cricket," Kohli wrote for Yuvraj.

"I've known you for who you are and you've always been very generous and caring for people around you. Now we're both parents and know what a blessing that is. I wish you all the happiness, beautiful memories and blessings in this new journey. God bless Yuvi Pa," he added.
