T20 WC: Hardik Pandya reveals text he sent to his family before Indo-Pak clash at the MCG

Virat Kohli played a brilliant knock versus Pakistan to help India open their T20 World Cup (T20 WC) 2022 campaign with a thrilling win, in the Super 12 clash at the iconic MCG, Melbourne on October 23 (Sunday). Being asked to bat first, Babar Azam-led Pakistan rode on half-centuries from Shan Masood and Iftikhar Ahmed to post 159 for 8. In reply, India were tottering at 31 for 4 before a 113-run fifth-wicket stand between Kohli (82 not out) and Hardik Pandya (37-ball 40) took India to a stunning four-wicket win at the iconic stadium.

Many have claimed that Kohli's knock was the greatest inning by an Indian in the T20 WC. Earlier, Kohli had scored a magical 82 not out, off 51 balls, versus Australia in the virtual quarter-final of the 2016 T20 WC, in Mohali. Following his MCG heroics, many have labelled it as the greatest knock by a Team India player in the tournament history. However, former Indian opener Sanjay Bangar disagrees.

"The best I feel is Yuvraj Singh's, he will be at No. 1 because it was a semi-final match, so it was a different level. The second, as Virat Kohli himself said in his post-match interview that he will rate the Melbourne innings higher, the sort of attack it was and the position we were in, difficult conditions, I feel Melbourne should be there," Bangar said in a video posted on Aakash Chopra's YouTube Channel.

Talking about Yuvraj's 30-ball 70-run knock versus the Aussies, it took place in the inaugural edition's second semi-final. Back then, MS Dhoni-led India faced Adam Gilchrist-led Aussies and posted a healthy 188 for 5 after opting to bat first, in Durban. India were 41 for 2 before Yuvi stitched an impressive 81-run stand with Robin Uthappa and went onto slam 70 off 30 deliveries, laced with 5 fours and equal number of sixes at a whopping strike rate of 233.33. Since Aussies were the favourites in the 2007 edition, Yuvi's inning was lauded by many. In reply, Australia managed 173 for 7 to lose by 15 runs.

Speaking to Star Sports after the match, Kohli recalled his initial struggles and said, "Honestly, I was feeling a lot of pressure at that stage. But then when he came in and he hit a few boundaries, I kind of opened up. That partnership, we didn't even realise when we got to our 100. We kept talking, we kept running hard and kept watching their body language. We knew it would turn at some stage, it turned quite late to be honest. We would have liked to do it earlier."

"All these things look great at the end, to be honest. When I was 12 of 21, I was like 'I am really messing this game up. I am not putting ball in the gaps'. But when you have experience and understand the value of batting deep, that's always been my role-playing for India. I know that I can do a lot of the power-hitting towards the end of the innings," the former captain asserted.

India beat Pakistan to set new world record for most wins in a calendar year in international cricket

India will lock horns with arch-rivals Pakistan in their opening game in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 2022). Tickets for the game were sold out within minutes of being made available and supporters of both countries have thronged Melbourne from different parts of the world for the mother of all clashes at the MCG.

India will be heading into the tournament as one of the favourites despite having underperformed in the Asia Cup 2022 earlier this year. Revenge will be on the minds of Rohit Sharma & Co. as they have tasted defeat twice in the last three meetings against Pakistan, including the T20 World Cup last year.

It is expected to be a cracker of a contest between the traditional rivals with Pakistan's quality pace attack going up against India's star-studded batting line-up. However, dark clouds hover over the game with the unpredictability of the weather in Melbourne. Rain can pose a huge threat to the game with light showers expected to disrupt the play in the evening.

The showers might get heavier as the day progresses but the fans and players will hope for a full-fledged contest.

Earlier on Saturday, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma had spoken about his team's preparations for the much-awaited clash. Sharma said the team was better prepared and will be looking to get off to a winning start in the tournament. He also spoke about the chances of rain playing spoilsport and insisted India are prepared having played an 8-over game against Australia at home earlier this year.

"I woke up and saw dark clouds over the buildings and now it is sunny. We will be coming into the match thinking it is a 40-over game. Luckily we have played a 8-over game against Australia in India," Rohit said in the pre-match presser ahead of the Pakistan game.

India vs Pakistan, Melbourne weather forecast: Will rain play spoilsport in India's T20 World Cup 2022 opener?

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir feels Virat Kohli's unbeaten 82 against Pakistan in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday was better than his match-winning innings for India against Australia in Mohali in 2016. Kohli had scored an unbeaten 82 against the Aussies in an epic run-chase in Mohali during the 2016 T20 World Cup.

The senior India batter, who is regarded as one of the greatest of all time had in the past labeled the Mohali masterclass as the best knock of his career. However, even he had to admit that his stunning half-century against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) was an extraordinary effort and the best knock that he has produced in an Indian shirt.

With Inda under massive pressure in the 160-run chase, Kohli defied all odds to play one of the finest innings of his career. He scored an unbeaten 82 off 53 deliveries laces with four sixes and six fours to help the Men in Blue clinch a last-ball thriller in their T20 World Cup opener.

With 48 to get off the last three overs, Kohli launched an onslaught against the Pakistan bowlers and took the likes of Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf to the cleaners to get India over the line. Gambhir echoed the sentiments of many in rating Kohli's 82 against Pakistan at MCG above his Mohali knock considering the pressure and the magnitude of the game.

"Finishing it off, probably literally getting more than 50% of the run. So it has to be up there probably better than the Mohali innings because if you see the magnitude, the conditions, the pressure, this was much more," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Gambhir reserved special praise for Kohli's stunning lofted backfoot shot against Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf which went straight into the stands. It is one of the most difficult shots to execute but Kohli did it to perfection despite being nder immense pressure with India needing 28 off 8 balls at the time.

The magnitude was much more: Gambhir rates Virat Kohli's 82 vs Pakistan better than his Mohali knock

Virat Kohli's masterclass, an unbeaten 82 off 53 balls, propelled India to a stunning four-wicket win over Pakistan in the T20 World Cup clash at the MCG, Melbourne on Sunday (October 23). In what was both the Asian giants' Super 12 opening fixtures, the Rohit Sharma-led India restricted Pakistan to 159-8, after opting to bowl first. In reply, the one-time winners rode on Kohli's 82* and Hardik Pandya's 37-ball 40 to take India home after they were reeling at 31 for 4 at one stage.

Kohli's knock was laced with 6 fours and 4 sixes, at a strike rate of 154.72. He rotated the strike with Hardik, who was the aggressor of the two at the beginning of their 113-run fifth-wicket stand. While Hardik slowed down, the 33-year-old Kohli upped the ante with some breathtaking shots and took India home in a dramatic last-over finish in front of a jam-packed stadium.

After the clash, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan -- who was the Player-of-the-Match in MS Dhoni-led India's 2007 T20 WC final win over Pakistan -- lifted Kohli as the ex-captain joined him and presenter Jatin Sapru for an interview on Star Sports. Here's the video:

Like millions of cricket fans around the world, Google CEO Sundar Pichai also remained glued to his TV screen to watch another chasing masterclass from Kohli, who went bonkers in the death overs to help India get 48 runs off the last three overs and get over the line in the pressure run-chase.

Pichai took to Twitter on Monday (October 24) to share his warm wishes on Diwali and said he celebrated the festival by watching the highlights of the last three overs of India's run-chase against Pakistan on Sunday.

Pichai referred to the first three overs of the game in his tweet where Indian pacers Arshdeep Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar had tightened the noose on the Pakistan top order. Arshdeep removed Pakistan skipper Babar Azam on a duck before getting rid of Mohammad Rizwan cheaply on 4 off 12 balls to leave Pakistan reeling at 15/2 inside four overs.

Kohli smashed a stunning unbeaten 82 to help India clinch a last-ball thriller against the Babar Azam-led side. Pichai came up with a witty response to shut down the Twitter user. "Did that too:) what a spell from Bhuvi and Arshdeep,", he wrote in response. Arshdeep removed Pakistan skipper Babar Azam on a duck before getting rid of Mohammad Rizwan cheaply on 4 off 12 balls to leave Pakistan reeling at 15/2 inside four overs. Google CEO Sundar Pichai shuts down Pakistan troll with witty response after India's thrilling win in T20 WC

Virat Kohli produced one of the best knocks of his career to help India beat Pakistan by 4 wickets in their T20 World Cup 2022 opener at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Melbourne on Sunday (October 24). Kohli played a match-winning knock of an unbeaten 82 to help India chase down the target of 160 runs in a dramatic finish.

India were rocked early in their pursuit of the 160-run target after their excellent show with the ball as openers KL Rahul (4) and Rohit Sharma (4) were both sent back cheaply. The Men in Blue were reduced to 31/4 inside the first seven overs as Pakistan pacers dominated the proceedings.

However, Kohli decided to take on the onus upon himself as he combined with Hardik Pandya to pull India back into the contest. The duo added a crucial stand of 113 runs for the fifth wicket and kept India in the hunt till the end. With 48 runs to get off the final three overs, Pandya struggled to play the big shots but Kohli shifted the gears seamlessly.

He looked in sublime control as the senior batter played some stunning shots to all parts of the ground. He smacked three fours against Shaheen Afridi before smashing two stunning sixes against Haris Rauf in the penultimate over to bring the equation down to 16 runs required off the last over.

Kohli then slammed a six off the fourth delivery off the final over from Mohammad Nawaz which turned out to be a no-ball as luck favoured the brave. India went on to clinch the thriller on the final ball with R Ashwin showing great temperament under pressure to play the winning shot.

Kohli was lauded by many for his heroic knock as he was the main architect of India's victory with his unbeaten 82 off 53 balls laced with six fours and four sixes. Several former Pakistan cricketers also heaped praise on the batting maestro, including the legendary Wasim Akram, who compared him to aliens.

Akram called Kohli an alien among humans after being left in awe following his match-winning heroics at the MCG. "Aliens do walk among us, he's one of the best I've seen in the recent or modern greats. He has been scoring for the last 15 years, and he has the best average while chasing," said the former Pakistan cricketer.

He had managed only 11 runs off his first 20 balls but switched gears brilliantly to end up wth 71 runs off the next 33 deliveries.

The D-day has finally arrived. India and Pakistan are set to meet in the Super 12 round of the Men's T20 World Cup 2022 edition, at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Melbourne on Sunday afternoon (October 23). This will be the second clash of the day, with Ireland-Sri Lanka face-off at Hobart being the first encounter.

India and Pakistan do not meet in bilaterals ever since the strained political relations between both sides. Hence, both the sides now only square off during multi-nation or ICC events. Thus, the clash becomes even more special for cricket lovers from both countries. This year, India and Pakistan have already met twice, during the 2022 Asia Cup. Back then, both teams won and lost a game each.

During their last T20 WC face-off, India lost their first-ever World Cup game to their arch-rivals Pakistan. Babar Azam-led Men in Green rode on Shaheen Afridi's 3/31 and unbeaten half-centuries from Babar-Md Rizwan to thrash India by ten wickets. Since then, India have revamped their T20I playing style and have enjoyed considerable success in the format in 2022.

Probable XI: Rohit Sharma (c), KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin/Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh

Prior to that, Babar & Co. defeated the then Virat Kohli-led Indian team by ten wickets in the 2021 T20 WC, in Dubai. Thus, Pakistan will feel confident facing India whereas Rohit & Co. will be desperate to avoid another World Cup loss versus their arch-rivals.

A lot of talks have been around the weather in Melbourne ahead of the blockbuster face-off. Rain is expected to make its presence felt and there might be a batting shootout between sides in a rain-curtailed encounter at the iconic ground. While it is cloudy in Melbourne at the time of publishing this report, the notorious weather conditions might spring a surprise. A game is expected, by all means, but it might not be a full 40-over contest.

Match prediction for IND vs PAK T20 WC clash: There are high chances of a rain-curtailed game at the MCG. If that happens, expect both captains to bowl first -- which is expected to be the case even if it is a full game -- with more batting ammunition. Given India have more firepower and are less dependent on their top two, an India win can be expected today.

D-day has finally arrived. India and Pakistan are set to lock horns in the fourth game of the Super 12 round at the T20 World Cup on Sunday afternoon (October 23) at the iconic MCG, Melbourne.

T20 WC 2022, India vs Pakistan match prediction: Will Rohit & Co. avenge their 2021 humiliation at the MCG?

There was drama, there was thrill and emotions peaked in the final over as India and Pakistan played out an absolute nail-biter at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in their T20 World Cup 2022 opener on Sunday. Virat Kohli produced yet another chasing masterclass as India clinched the last-ball thriller by four wickets to get off to a winning start in the tournament.

Kohli was the main architect of India's famous victory as he played one of the best knocks of his career so far. Kohli was just 11 off 20 balls when India were reeling in a spot of bother having lost as many as four wickets with just 31 runs on the board in the tricky chase of 160 runs.

However, the king proved why he is regarded as one of the greatest of all time by taking India home in a sensational manner. Kohli ended up scoring as many as 71 runs off his next 33 balls to keep India in the hunt till the end and help them pull off an improbable victory in the high-pressure chase.

Kohli began the real onslaught in the 18th over where he took Shaheen Afridi to the cleaners with three fours before smashing Haris Rauf for back-t-back sixes in the penultimate over to bring the equation down to 16 required off the last over. However, what unfolded in the final over kept the fans and the players on the edge as India secured a dramatic win on the last ball.

With 16 to get, Hardik was sent back by Mohammad Nawaz on the first ball as he miscued his shot and was caught by Babar Azam. Dinesh Karthik, who is India's designated finisher in the tournament, arrived in the middle with a perfect situation for him to shine and prove his critics wrong.

However, Karthik could only manage a single off the next ball before Kohli converted a single into two on the third delivery to reduce the equation to 13 needed off the last three balls. Kohli smacked a high full-toss from Nawaz for a huge six next and luck favoured India as it turned out to be a waist-height no-ball.

With the equation now down to 6 needed off the final three deliveries, Kohli was clean-bowled on the free-hit delivery. However, India managed to sneak three runs in byes to leave two to get off the last two balls. Just when it seemed, India had it in their bag after pulling off the unthinkable on the first four balls, Karthik was stumped by Rizwan on the penultimate delivery as more drama unfolded at the SCG.

R Ashwin arrived in the middle with India needing two off the last ball with Pakistan once again favourites. However, Nawaz ended up bowling a wide ball under pressure and Ashwin did well to leave it and tie the scores.

With millions around the globe glued to their TV screens and the spotlight on Ashwin, he nonchalantly lofted the final delivery for a single to wrap up a thrilling victory for India after a nerve-wracking last over. Following the winning run, a pumped-up Kohli punched the ground after letting his emotions flow and was later lifted and hugged by his teammates.

Thrill, drama and emotions: Relive nerve-wracking last over between India and Pakistan in T20 World Cup

While Virat Kohli grabbed the limelight with his stunning knock, Hardik Pandya silently played a crucial role in India's four-wicket victory against arch-rivals Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday. India got off to a winning start in the tournament after clinching an epic last-ball thriller at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Kohli was the hero for India with his brilliant knock of an unbeaten 82 which helped India snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. But the senior batter wouldn't have been able to pull off the miraculous win without Hardik's support. The star all-rounder was among the architects of India's win as the Rohit Sharma-led side got off to a flying start in the T20 World Cup 2022.

Hardik picked up three wickets with the ball to help India restrict Pakistan to 160 in the high-profile game before scoring 40 off 37 balls during India's run chase to help the Men in Blue secure one of their best wins against Pakistan in recent times. His match-winning effort also saw Hardik become the first Indian player to achieve a stunning feat in T20Is.

His best innings: Rohit Sharma lauds Virat Kohli after his match-winning 82 against Pakistan

The chase master was on top of his game as Virat Kohli pulled off one of the most memorable victories for India against their arch-rivals Pakistan in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 23). Kohli looked in sublime touch as he delivered another chasing masterclass to snatch a famous victory from Pakistan's jaws in India's opener at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne.

In pursuit of a challenging target of 161 runs, India were in a spot of bother after losing opener KL Rahul cheaply on 4 off 8 balls when Kohli arrived in the middle. India were soon left reeling on 26/3 after losing both Rohit Sharma (4) and Suryakumar Yadav (15) in quick succession as Kohli took his time in settling down at the other end.

Axar Patel too soon followed suit as India were reduced to 31/4 and appeared in deep trouble before Kohli combined with Hardik Pandya to steady the ship. The duo put on a brilliant stand of 113 runs for the fifth wicket but Pandya struggled to play the big shots leaving Kohli with an uphill task.

However, the chase master as he is known for his several match-winning performances in run-chases in the past, was up for the challenge. Kohli shifted gears seamlessly in the death overs and played some sensational strokes all around the park to keep India in the game till the very last ball.

With 16 runs required off the final over, India lost Hardik on the very first delivery and managed only three runs off the next two balls. Kohli then played a stunning shot to slam a six off Mohammad Nawaz to bring the equation in India's favour. However, luck favoured the brave as the fourth delivery from Nawaz was deemed a no-ball.

Kohli was bowled on the ree-hit delivery but ran three in byes as the equation came down to two needed off two. There was another twist in the tale as Pakistan managed to get rid of Dinesh Karthik on the penultimate ball before R Ashwin sealed the victory for India with a single off the final ball.

Kohli finished with 82 off 53 balls laced with four sixes and six fours, labelling the knock his greatest ever in T20IS for Team India. It was yet another chasing masterclass from one of the greatest ever to have graced the game. The Indian superstar was hailed by many on Twitter as they bowed down to the 'King' after his heroics under pressure.

Kohli was not at his usual best right from the word go and took his time in settling down but once he got a hang of the conditions and the pitch, there was no stopping the chase master. He had scored only 11 runs off the first 20 balls he faced but ended up getting 71 off the next 33 to pull India through in the last-ball humdinger.

The high-profile clash was always expected to be a thrilling affair but the incredibly dramatic finish comfortably places the game among the best matches between the arch-rivals. The chase master was on top of his game as Virat Kohli pulled off one of the most memorable victories for India against their arch-rivals Pakistan in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 23).

'You are the king': Twitter hails Virat Kohli after his chasing masterclass against Pakistan in T20 World Cup

Virat Kohli's special bond with former Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni is a secret to none. The two greats of the game shared a great rapport and their camaraderie was for everyone to see both on and off the pitch. Kohli has often spoken about his admiration for Dhoni and recently explained what made their relationship special.

Dhoni and Kohli have headlined India's success in international cricket over the past decade. While Dhoni led the Men in Blue to numerous memorable triumphs, including the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup, Kohli helped India dominate across all three formats after taking over the baton in 2017.

Kohli had made his international debut under Dhoni's captaincy and the former captain always backed the superstar batter right from the start of his career. Despite struggling in Tests initially, Kohli had Dhoni's backing and was not dropped from the team despite his average performances.

Dhoni's decision later helped India reap rich rewards as Kohli went on to become one of the best batters in the world. Opening up on their bond, Kohli said his relationship with Dhoni was based on trust and understanding. The former India captain said he never had to call for a run when he used to bat with Dhoni as they had an amazing understanding.

“What I experienced with my friendship and relationship with MS is very difficult to explain in words because its based on understanding and trust. We never actually, you know when people talk about batting together in calling for runs as soon as the ball went to the gap, we never called because I knew he is running for 2, I'm running for two. Yes, a misunderstanding once in about 10-12 years maybe, but apart from that we were so focused always on what the team wanted and what we need to do for the team all the time,“ Kohli said on The ICC Review Podcast.

“So there was always that trust there was always that faith between each other that we are going to get the job done for the team. And within that faith and trust then the relationship evolved outside the game," he added.

Unlike in the past when there have been tussles between the outgoing and incoming captains in Indian cricket, the transition from Dhoni to Kohli was a smooth one as the two leaders shared a mutual respect for each other. Kohli said it was unusual for a few watching from the outside but for him and Dhoni, it was normal.

"We spoke on many things, we understood each other's mindset absolutely clearly and the support he provided me in my early days was absolutely crucial for my growth. And then towards the later half of his career, I was constantly there for him and the transition between two captains for the outside world it was like 'Wow we have never seen this happen before and all that but for us, it was quite normal, it was never even occurring to us that he's the captain or I'm the captain now,” said the India superstar, who quit all forms of captaincy earlier this year.

There was always trust and faith: Virat Kohli opens up on his relationship with former India captain MS Dhoni

He was mocked, taunted, and trolled brutally after being made a villain overnight for dropping a sitter against Pakistan in the Asia Cup a few days back. The critics came down hard on young Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh as they vented their frustration on the 23-year-old in the wake of India's five-wicket defeat in the Super Four clash.

Arshdeep dropped Pakistan batter Asif Ali when the opponents required 34 to win off the last couple of overs against India in the crucial Super 4 game. Ali went on to make the most of the reprieve and ended up taking his side home in what turned out to be a thrilling last-over finish.

Arshdeep, who was playing his second game against Pakistan, was on the receiving end of vicious abuse and trolling. His Wikipedia page was compromised with fake Khalistani links and the young pacer had to face taunts from fans both on social media and off it.

But cricket is a great leveller and it presented Arshdeep with an opportunity to redeem himself as he made his T20 World Cup debut in the high-profile clash against Pakistan on Sunday. The left-arm pacer was given the ball by captain Rohit Sharma for the second over of Pakistan's innings and all he needed was just one delivery to bury the horrors of the past.

Only a few manage to grab the opportunity for redemption like Arshdeep did on Sunday as he ran riot against Pakistan's top order to get India off to a flyer with the ball. He got the prized wicket of Pakistan captain Babar Azam on the very first delivery he bowled in the game and followed it up with another important dismissal of Mohammad Rizwan in his next over.

Making the most of the movement on offer at the MCG, Arshdeep bowled a beautiful inswinger to trap Babar plumb in front of the wicket and sent him packing on a duck before returning to get the better of Rizwan in his second over in the game.

Days after being slaughtered for a dropped catch, Arshdeep Singh turns out to be India's hero against Pakistan

Former India batter Gautam Gambhir feels the blockbuster clash between India and Pakistan in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 should be seen as just another game. The ex-opener, who was part of India's 2007 T20 World Cup-winning team under former skipper MS Dhoni, said winning against Pakistan is not the final goal for the Indian team but just a step towards winning the World Cup.

The hype surrounding the marquee clash between the two arch-rivals is immense as they lock horns for only the third time this year. India and Pakistan met twice in the Asia Cup earlier this year where both teams managed to win a game each. India have lost twice in their last three meetings against their eternal rivals and revenge will be on the minds of Rohit Sharma & Co. on Sunday.

Ahead of the marquee clash, Gambhir said India should treat the game as a stepping stone towards realising their ultimate dream of returning home as the new T20 World Cup winners. "Beating Pakistan is not the goal, it is just a step towards winning the cup," said Gambhir while speaking on Star Sports.

Beating Pakistan not the goal, it's just a step for winning cup: Gautam Gambhir on marquee clash

Its unblemished record of success against the arch-rivals at the marquee ICC events a thing of the past, a hurt Indian team will be desperate for revenge against a high-quality Pakistan side in a sell-out Super 12 clash of the T20 World Cup, here on Sunday.

While rain is threatening to play spoilsport, it's unlikely to be a complete washout according to people who understand weather conditions here. Thousands of fans from both countries have crisscrossed the globe to watch their team in action and trust rival captains Rohit Sharma and Babar Azam to tell you this is another 'match' for them but all the 22 players and the reserves know that this is 'The Match'.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, under whom, India never lost to Pakistan at ICC events, would repeat himself time and again that there is no place for the word 'revenge' in a cricket field.

But a lot has changed in the past one year since Shaheen Shah Afridi in an intimidating opening spell gave Pakistan team its first victory in a World Cup across formats.

It wasn't just a match won or a voodoo broken but that 3/31 by Shaheen was also successful in bruising the egos of some of contemporary cricket world's biggest batting stalwarts.

Also Read: New Zealand pacer Tim Southee pips Shakib Al Hasan to become leading wicket-taker in T20Is

While Rohit, Virat Kohli or KL Rahul aren't the ones to forget last year's humiliation in Dubai easily, the fact remains that India as a team has looked slightly under-cooked in recent times.

And at least on Sunday, the 'Men In Blue' wouldn't start as favourites in the 'mother of all clashes'.

BCCI's statement that India will not travel to Pakistan to play the Asia Cup and the subsequent PCB threat of pulling out of 50 over World Cup in India has only made the atmosphere more politically charged and vicious.

India wouldn't mind going into a match as underdogs and it will be Pakistan, who will have to live up to the high expectations. Combination is still a worry for India

This has been a trend with the Indian team for some time now -- not having a settled combination. In 2019, they didn't have a number four even after two years in the run-up to the meet.

And now, one year after the last T20 World Cup, India might have to drop a specialist left-hander (Rishabh Pant) from the top five in order to accommodate an extra bowler.

The sameness in the batting line-up is a bit worrying as it would let Shaheen, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf bowl one line in absence of Pant, who also has been a touch out of form.

How India's top three handle Shaheen in the Powerplay would dictate how the match will pan out. One man, who could perhaps take Shaheen head-on is India's current No. 1 batter Suryakumar Yadav, who is someone who never changes his game irrespective of conditions or situations.

But in wet conditions, Rohit would pray that lady luck will shine on him and he would win the toss and may be opt to chase when his his bowling line-up looks a bit scratchy.

While India have three spinners in the line-up, there could be only one playing in the end if the persistent rains and a sharp dip in temperature, makes the conditions seamer-friendly. In that case, an out-of-form Harshal Patel, with decent batting skills might be back in the scheme of things.

But with three left-handers - Shan Masood/Fakhar Zaman, Mohammed Nawaz and Khushdil Shah, a bowler who can turn it away is always going to be in the mix. Hence Ravichandran Ashwin can never be completely out of the equation.

Last time, the strategy to promote Nawaz as a pinch hitter in Asia Cup Super 4, literally stumped India but they must have done better homework this time not to get caught off-guard.

Also Read: New Zealand pacer Tim Southee pips Shakib Al Hasan to become leading wicket-taker in T20Is While Rohit, Virat Kohli or KL Rahul aren't the ones to forget last year's humiliation in Dubai easily, the fact remains that India as a team has looked slightly under-cooked in recent times. Combination is still a worry for India This has been a trend with the Indian team for some time now -- not having a settled combination. Confident India hoping to turn tables on Pakistan in T20 World Cup clash

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has warned captain Rohit Sharma and the Indian team management against playing Dinesh Karthik over Rishabh Pant as the first-choice wicket-keeper in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022. The 2007 T20 World Cup winner believes the decision to play Karthik, who has been effective only in slog overs can backfire for India at the World Cup.

While Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has confirmed he has already decided the playing XI for the team's opening clash against arch-rivals Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2022, the debate surrounding the team combination has not died down. One of the major selection headaches for India is the wicket-keeper's slot with Karthik and Pant competing against each other.

While Pant holds a significant advantage in being a left-hander in the absence of Ravindra Jadeja, the Indian team management has recently backed Karthik over the young gun considering his finishing exploits. The 37-year-old has been phenomenal down the order and has played numerous match-winning cameos for the Indian team as a finisher.

However, Gambhir believes India should not pick a batter specifically to play only ten balls and that the strategy can prove to be dangerous when India lose early wickets. The former India opener said he would pick Pant to bat at number five in his playing XI with Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel batting at no.6 and no.7 respectively.

"In my playing XI, Rishabh Pant should play at No.5, Hardik Pandya at No.6, and Axar Patel at No.7. But what we have seen in the practice matches is that Dinesh Karthik will play. But a player is not picked to play just 10 balls. You should pick a player so that he can bat at No.5 or 6. But Dinesh Karthik has not shown that intention," Gambhir told Zee News.

"He and the team management have shown the intention that he will bat only in the last 2-3 overs and that can be dangerous because in Australia, if you lose early wickets, you might have to send in Axar Patel early because you also wouldn't want to expose Hardik early. That is why I picked Pant in my playing XI. But again, that won't happen," he added.

While India's top four is already sorted with captain Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav walking into the XI, Gambhir feels India should play with three specialist fast bowlers in Australia. He picked Mohammed Shami as his first-choice pacer and backed Harshal Patel as the death overs specialist.

Disappointed to have not won an ICC trophy in 9 years, T20 WC gives us a chance to change it: Rohit Sharma

Jay Shah's revelation on the Asia Cup 2023 edition has sparked a huge controversy. After BCCI'S Annual General Meeting (AGM), on Tuesday (October 18) in Mumbai, Shah commenced his second innings as the board's secretary whereas Roger Binny succeeded Sourav Ganguly to become the new chief.

After the AGM, Shah -- who is also Asian Cricket Council's (ACC) -- revealed that the next year's Asia Cup won't be held in Pakistan as India can't travel to the neighbouring country due to the strained political relations between both nations. Hence, he confirmed that a neutral venue will once again host the Asia Cup, as was the case during this year's edition (held in the UAE with eventful winners Sri Lanka as hosts).

Since then, Pakistan's former cricketers and even their board PCB have strongly reacted to the ACC chief's claims. Now, veteran keeper-batter Kamran Akmal also joined the bandwagon and has even suggested Team Pakistan to boycott India at all levels, including the upcoming T20 World Cup clash on October 23 (Sunday) at the MCG, Melbourne.

“I believe Jay Shah’s statement was unexpected, and since he attended the Pakistan-India game during this year’s Asia Cup, he should reserve politics for his opposition and avoid dragging it into sports,” Kamran told ARY news.

He added, "Asia Cup should only be hosted in Pakistan and if that does not happen then Pakistan should not play against India at any level, be it ICC events’ matches, Asia Cup matches, or even their match on October 23."

PCB responds to ACC President's statement:

“The PCB has noted with surprise and disappointment of yesterday’s comments made by the ACC President Mr Jay Shah with regards to shifting of next year’s Asia Cup to a neutral venue. The comments were made without any discussion or consultation with the Board of the Asian Cricket Council or the Pakistan Cricket Board (event host) and without any thoughts towards their long-term consequences and implications."

"After having presided over the ACC meeting during which Pakistan was awarded the ACC Asia Cup with an overwhelming support and response from the ACC Board Members, Mr Shah’s statement of shifting of the ACC Asia Cup has clearly been made unilaterally. This is contrary to the philosophy and spirit for which the Asian Cricket Council was formed in September 1983 – a united Asian cricket body to safeguard the interests of the its Members and organise, develop, and promote the game of cricket in Asia."

The statement added, "The overall impact of such statements have the potential to split the Asian and international cricketing communities, and can impact Pakistan’s visit to India for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and future ICC Events in India in the 2024-2031 cycle.

“The PCB has to date not received any official communication or clarification from the ACC on the statement of the ACC President. As such, the PCB has now requested the Asian Cricket Council to convene an emergency meeting of its Board as soon as practically possible to discuss this important and sensitive matter.”

After bowing out of the last year's edition, in the UAE, in the Super 12 round, India will look to start on a strong note. Ahead of Rohit Sharma & Co.'s opening game, former Indian captain Kapil Dev has expressed concerns on India's chances of entering the semi-finals of the marquee event in Australia.

Speaking to the press in Lucknow, the 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil pointed out, "What more do you want in the side other than having all-rounders who could win matches for a side not only in the World Cup but in all other matches or events? An all-rounder like Hardik gives Rohit Sharma the liberty to make use of the sixth bowler in a match. He is a good batter, bowler and fielder too. Ravindra Jadeja is also a perfect all-rounder for India."
