‘One who controls air and space controls this planet’: IAF veterans reveal India's next war strategy

Operation Sindoor demonstrated a major shift towards capability-centric warfare, with modern technology, operational readiness and advanced combat capabilities playing a crucial role. The Indian Air Force stressed the growing importance of air power, preparedness and highly trained personnel in meeting evolving security challenges.

IAF Chief: Op Sindoor proved shift to capability-centric warfare

India's air force chief has warned that falling fighter squadron numbers and delays in new aircraft programmes will leave the service exposed, and said the force needs the equivalent of almost two squadrons a year simply to stop the decline. Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, speaking at his annual press conference in Delhi, said squadron numbers were already falling after the retirement of the MiG-21 fleet last year. “Everyone understands at this point that our numbers are coming down,” he said. “This time, this delay has become somewhat more, because it is going to hurt us, no doubt.” He named the Tejas Mark 1A, the proposed multi-role fighter aircraft (MRFA) buy, and the Tejas Mark 2 as the programmes expected to close the gap, alongside the longer-term AMCA. “If things go well, we should be able to sign MRFA in this financial year,” he said. On the stealth fighter, he added: “If there are delays in the AMCA fifth-generation fighter programme, we may have to look at other options. Russia has offered the Su-57, but no decision has been taken yet.” Alternative options were being examined because adversaries were acquiring fifth-generation aircraft, he said, while stressing that all programmes needed a “whole-of-nation” push and that Hindustan Aeronautics and the Aeronautical Development Agency remained focused on delivery. Singh acknowledged that delays on the Tejas Mark 1A had been greater than planned. “It happens that you plan something, but things get delayed. But this time, the delay has been much,” he said, adding that the Mark 2 and other orders were intended to fill the shortfall. On unmanned systems, he rejected the idea of a standalone drone force. Loitering munitions used in Operation Sindoor had helped “in creating chaos and also taking down some of the adversaries,” he said, but described drones as evolutionary rather than revolutionary for the air force. “These capabilities have been with us for decades… Whether we need a separate drone force, I don’t think so. They should be part of the same setup… We cannot operate one type of weapon separately somewhere and another type of weapon separately.” Specialised units already existed and could be expanded if required. The chief also used the briefing to underline the service’s non-combat role, citing flood and forest-fire relief inside India and missions in Uganda, Venezuela, the Philippines, Madagascar, Thailand, Cuba and Jamaica as expressions of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.” On the multilateral Tarang Shakti exercise, he said the presence of F-35s for the first time in such an event in India, along with new participants and observers, was intended to build interoperability and shared procedures. Broader geopolitical shifts, he argued, had shown that “it is the air power which has come to fore, which has come out as the cutting edge of military power.” He also praised Flydubai captain Smit Machchhar, whose actions he called “exceptionally brave” and a lesson in physical and mental resolve. “Every Indian is proud of him,” Singh said.

India's Defence Secretary, RK Singh, heaped praise on Rafael fighter jet and expressed India's desire to integrate further Rafael jets into the depleting squadron strength of the Indian Air Force. India is currently negotiating with the French government for 114 more Rafale fighters, which could cost up to ₹3.25 lakh crore and very well be the most expensive defence deal in the history of India if agreed upon."I think [the] Rafale is a proven aircraft. We have already got an in-out inventory. It did well in Operation Sindoor. We also have the Naval version on order right now. So we have a good relationship with the French as well. India-Japan defence cooperation gets a major boost as Japanese F-2 fighter jets arrive in Jodhpur for Vir Guardian 2026, training alongside the Indian Air Force’s Su-30 MKIs, Rafales and Tejas.

The exercise gives both air forces an opportunity to conduct advanced operational missions, mission planning and specialist exchanges while learning from different aircraft, tactics and operating procedures.

Japan’s F-2 is particularly significant, with the fighter derived from the F-16 design but extensively modified with Japanese avionics, composite materials, larger wings and an AESA radar. For Indian pilots, training against such a different platform provides valuable dissimilar air combat experience.

India’s diverse fighter fleet also makes the country an attractive destination for international air exercises. Foreign air forces can train alongside aircraft originating from Russian, French and Indian design ecosystems while operating across India’s vast airspace and varied geography.

The report also examines how India and Japan are working to increase the complexity of bilateral exercises and how upcoming multinational drills such as Tarang Shakti could further expand air combat cooperation.

Watch the full report for an in-depth look at Vir Guardian 2026, Japan’s F-2 fighters and why India is becoming an increasingly important hub for multinational air combat training.

Not every weapon dropped from a fighter aircraft needs an engine to travel long distances. The growing importance of glide bombs is demonstrating how relatively simple technology can transform conventional bombs into precision stand-off weapons. A glide bomb sits between a traditional bomb and a missile. Unlike a cruise missile, it does not require sustained propulsion. Instead, wings, navigation and precision guidance allow it to use the launching aircraft’s altitude and speed to glide towards its target. The advantage is significant. Russia has extensively used conventional bombs fitted with guidance and wing kits to attack Ukrainian positions, infrastructure and defensive lines from stand-off distances. This creates an uncomfortable equation for air defence. Intercepting large numbers of comparatively inexpensive glide bombs can consume valuable surface-to-air missiles, while allowing them through can cause significant damage. Ukraine has consequently been developing its own glide weapons.India is now expanding its capabilities in this area. The Indian Air Force has successfully drop-tested the indigenous Khagantak-243 from a Su-30MKI fighter. India prepares for the networked battlefield: IAF’s big push for information superiority

The Government of India has opened one of the biggest defence purchases in the country's history. A tender worth about one lakh crore rupees has been floated for sixty multi-role transport aircraft. These planes will modernise the transport fleet of the Indian Air Force. What makes this tender special is that it is open not only to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited but also to private Indian companies. This shows a intention to build such aircraft at home and to strengthen our tactical and strategic airlift power for the next several decades. To understand why this is needed, we must look at the Antonov AN-32. For nearly forty years this Russian-origin plane has been the backbone of medium transport work in the Air Force. Around 125 of them joined service from 1984 onwards, and each can carry six to seven tonnes of load. They have done almost every job asked of them: carrying soldiers, dropping cargo by parachute, shifting the injured, helping during floods and earthquakes, running daily supply runs and supporting special missions. In the cold heights of Ladakh they fed forward posts. Over Siachen they have made life-saving airdrops. In the North-East, where proper roads were rare through the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s, these aircraft kept far-off drop zones and small landing grounds alive. Their service has been outstanding. But age spares nobody. The instruments inside are now old-fashioned, the lifting ability has fallen, and keeping them serviceable has become a daily struggle. Also Read: Why aircraft carriers matter more than ever for India's navy India did try to give these planes a longer life. In 2009 an agreement was signed with Ukraine, the original maker, to upgrade 105 AN-32s. Some aircraft did receive the promised improvements. But after the Russia-Ukraine conflict began in 2014 over Crimea, the work could not be completed. So today the fleet is only partly modernised and continues to grow older. The Air Force has now decided that patchwork will not help. A full replacement is the only answer. In other categories, new aircraft are already arriving. Fifty-six Airbus C-295s are replacing the old Avro HS-748 planes. Sixteen came ready-made from abroad, while the remaining forty are being built at a new factory in Vadodara. The first fully Indian-made C-295 has completed its test flights and joined service. Indian content in it began near 35 per cent, has already touched 40 to 45 per cent, and is expected to reach 70 per cent. The Air Force also flies twelve C-130J Super Hercules bought in 2011, which lift about nineteen tonnes. For heavier loads there is the C-17 Globemaster, carrying seventy to eighty tonnes, and the older IL-76 of the mid-1980s, carrying around forty tonnes. Also Read: Why the massive F-35 relies on only one engine instead of two The present plan began in 2022, when the Air Force sought eighty multi-role transport aircraft and issued a Request for Information. Later the requirement was fixed at a payload band of eighteen to thirty tonnes. Three aircraft are now in the race: the Lockheed Martin C-130, the Embraer C-390 Millennium and the Airbus A400M. Indian firms have already picked their partners. Tata has joined hands with Lockheed Martin and wants to build the C-130 here. Mahindra has tied up with Embraer for the C-390. Airbus, which already works with Tata Advanced Systems on the C-295, has said it is ready to make the A400M in India. As Air Marshal Sanjeev Kapoor has rightly pointed out, the chosen aircraft must perform dependably in every Indian condition — short high-altitude strips, hot coastal belts, damp tropical air, bare airfields and half-prepared runways — while staying affordable and easy to support for forty long years. Each contender has its own strength. The C-130 is already known to Indian crews and has proved itself in real missions, including evacuations from Afghanistan and Yemen, so it would be easiest to absorb. The C-390 comes at a competitive price and carries about twenty-six tonnes. The A400M is the strongest of the three, lifting thirty to thirty-five tonnes and easing the load on the tired IL-76 fleet, but it is also the costliest. The conditions of the tender clearly reflect Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. Only twelve aircraft will come in fly-away condition. The remaining forty-eight must be built on Indian soil. Complete maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities will also be set up here. Indigenous content is fixed at sixty per cent, with Indian companies placed in the supply chain from day one. Even licensing and export rights are to be settled at the start, so that India can one day sell such aircraft to other nations. Besides paradrops, casualty evacuation, assault landing and troop movement, the new aircraft must also serve the Army by carrying light armoured vehicles like the BMP-2 Sarath and artillery guns straight to forward posts. This programme is not merely about buying planes. It is about building a self-reliant fleet for the next forty years.

Battle for the Skies: Who Will Replace the AN-32?

India is making a major push to join the France-led Future Combat Air System (FCAS) sixth-generation fighter programme, according to a report by the Standing Committee on Defence. The move could give New Delhi access to advanced sixth-generation combat aircraft technologies while its indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme continues to develop.

The FCAS initiative is being led by France alongside Spain, while India is also pursuing deeper defence cooperation with France, including the proposed acquisition of Rafale fighter jets. India’s potential entry comes amid growing concerns over China’s reported progress in next-generation fighter aircraft, including the J-36 and J-50.

The Indian Air Force is acquiring nine decommissioned Jaguar strike aircraft from the United Kingdom to dismantle spare parts and sustain the capability of the ageing Anglo-French SEPECAT Jaguar fleet. India will use these aircraft to source spare parts and sub-assemblies like Adour engines, avionics, landing gear and hydraulics for India’s six operational Jaguar squadrons to use in its existing fleet of Jaguars to keep them airborne for more than a decade. While the details of the deal have not been made public, several media platforms, such as the Indian Defence Research Wing, earlier this week reported that nine RAF decommissioned Jaguar aircraft, including 150 different types of spare parts, were covered in white protective layers docked at an unnamed base. In 2024, the Indian Ministry of Defence formally requested these Jagauar pacakge to combat attrition and cannibalisation purposes. The UK, France, and other previous operators have long since retired their Jaguar fleets, meaning original production lines for factory-made components have completely shut down. On the anniversary of Operation Sindoor, the Indian Air Force has stated that over 100 Pakistani soldiers and around 100 terrorists were killed during the operation. The statement highlights the scale and intensity of the cross-border military action, which targeted militant infrastructure and hostile positions. The operation is being recalled as a major counter-terror response by India, marking a significant moment in regional security developments.

Operation Sindoor Anniversary | IAF: Over 100 Pak Soldiers & Around 100 Terrorists Killed

According to the Indian Government's latest assessment, Pakistani terror groups are yet to recover from the strikes under Operation Sindoor, India's counter-terror operation inside Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack. The assessment in form of a dossier, as seen by WION, says that Indian Army & Air Force strikes under Operation Sindoor delivered a significant blow to the operational capabilities of major Pakistani terror groups by targeting a network of training and staging camps in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) and, for the first time in decades, locations across the International Border (IB) in Pakistan's Punjab province. The operation focused on facilities long identified by Indian intelligence as key nodes for Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM). Among the primary targets was the Sawai Nala camp, also known as Bait-ul-Mujahideen, near the Chelabandi bridge on the Muzaffarabad-Neelum Road. For over two decades, it served as the main entry point for LeT recruits undergoing basic combat training, known as Daura-e-Aam. Its neutralisation is expected to severely hamper the group's ability to process and prepare new fighters. In the Kotli sector, strikes hit the Abbas camp, approximately 13 km from the Line of Control (LoC), a specialised facility for preparing LeT fidayeen (suicide) squads. Indian assessment indicated a squad had completed indoctrination ahead of Operation Sindoor and was poised for deployment towards high-value targets in Jammu. Nearby, the Gulpur camp, a LeT operational base coordinating attacks in Rajouri and Poonch, was also targeted, aiming to disrupt logistical networks sustaining militancy in the Jammu region. Jaish-e-Mohammed's capabilities were affected by strikes on the Syedna Bilal camp in Muzaffarabad, described as a major staging area and centre for weapons, explosives and jungle survival training. Further strikes targeted the Barnala camp in Bhimber district, just 9 km from the LoC. The operation crossed the IB with a strike on the Sarjal camp, 6 km inside Punjab near Sialkot. Pakistani authorities had long assumed the IB remained a sanctuary; the action challenged that assumption. Another Sialkot-area target, the Mehmoona Joya camp (12-18 km from the IB), served as a key HM facility and control centre for reviving operations in Kathua and Jammu. Heavy warheads delivered by loitering munitions destroyed its communications centre and administrative block, significantly impairing HM's ability to coordinate with sleeper cells inside India. The cumulative effect has been profound for the three groups' leadership. LeT, which has relied on PoJK infrastructure for recruitment and deployment, faces disrupted training pipelines and loss of experienced instructors, delaying planned operations and forcing a leadership rethink on force replenishment. JeM's specialised training assets have been degraded, limiting its capacity for sophisticated attacks. For HM, the loss of a critical communications hub has blinded regional commanders, complicating the direction of assets already inside Indian territory. Indian assessment described the strikes as precise and punitive, one that shows a shift in India's strategy, moving beyond the legacy of "strategic restraint". Also read: 'Operation Sindoor continues': India's BIG message to Pakistan - 5 POWERFUL IMAGES

In contemporary conflict, the battle is fought not only on the ground but also in the domain of perception. Reflecting on Operation Sindoor, a targeted Indian military response launched around May 7, 2025, following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people in Jammu & Kashmir, Air Chief Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria, former Chief of the Air Staff, addressed the question of narrative control with measured clarity. Speaking at WION World Pulse summit on Wednesday (Mar 18), his central assertion was unequivocal: "It is the adversary who loses...when 'you have those satellite pictures' where damage is visible, when 'all nine terrorist targets' have been struck with visible proofs, “what narrative do you want? It is destroyed. It is there for you to see.”

Timing, transparency, and tangible proof
Bhadauria noted that the initial briefing on Operation Sindoor by women officers from the three services was part of a deliberate plan, shaped by the nature and purpose of the response, as well as the context in which Operation Sindoor was undertaken. The impact within the country, he observed, was “undeniable… it was great.”A key critique often raised in such scenarios concerns the timing of official disclosures. Should operational details and evidence be released sooner to shape public and international perception? Bhadauria dismissed the significance of timing as secondary, stating, “Whether it could be a little early or a little later, it doesn’t really matter…it was done quite okay.” ALSO READ: 'Not our war': Germany emphasises EU unity on West Asia conflict, says German Ambassador Philipp Ackermann at WION World Pulse
Framing the narrative in modern conflict
More crucial, he argues, is the credibility of evidence. “When you have those satellite pictures… all nine terrorist targets, the damage was shown,” he noted, highlighting that verifiable outcomes carry greater weight than rapid messaging. Importantly, he emphasised that such imagery was independently accessible: “You can go to any site which is not connected with our presentations and see it.”While acknowledging that “narrative formation, especially in a prolonged conflict, plays a huge role,” Bhadauria rejected the notion that India struggled in this domain. Instead, he concluded that the discourse around narrative may be “somewhat overplayed.” His most striking observation encapsulates the approach: “The images themselves were our narrative, and nobody can deny that.”On Wednesday (Mar 18), WION World PULSE brought together a cross-section of policymakers, diplomats and industry leaders at a time of heightened global uncertainty. The global thought leadership forum came at a time when globally the lines between geopolitics, economics and technology are increasingly blurred. The dynamic event began with a keynote address by Dr Subhash Chandra, Founder and Mentor of Zee Group and Former Rajya Sabha member. Addressing the diverse audience, Dr Chandra noted that "we are in an era of information overload" and in times like these, "diplomacy needs credible global platforms like WION".

The Sukhoi Su-30MKI, a heavily customised variant of a fighter aircraft originally developed by Russia in the 1980s, has long served as the backbone of the Indian Air Force. Several squadrons of the Su-30MKI are stationed in India’s northeastern region. The Russian-built jets were first delivered in 1997, and they are now manufactured in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. At present, the Indian Air Force operates more than 250 of these aircraft. Also Read: West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose resigns ahead of assembly elections
So what exactly happened to the Sukhoi Su-30?
In this case, the fighter jet lost both radar contact and communication links, meaning ground controllers can no longer monitor its position through standard tracking systems. Helicopters, aircraft, and ground teams are deployed to comb the last known location or the jet’s possible flight path. The primary objective is to quickly re-establish contact, locate the aircraft, and ensure the safety of both the pilot and the jet. However, an aircraft being described as “overdue” does not necessarily mean it has crashed. In some cases, it may simply be due to communication failure, technical issues, adverse weather conditions, or diversion to another airbase.
