Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari spoke to WION on the situation in Indo-Pacific, northern and western borders, as well as ties with Russia, the US, France, Australia, and West Asia; and humanitarian rescue missions. The air chief marshal took a sortie in the Sukhoi Su-30MKI aircraft at Air Force station Adampur in Punjab.

Asked by WION's principal diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal on the rollout of humanitarian exercises in terms of their risk-prone nature, the air chief marshal said: "IAF has always been the first respondents to any crisis across the globe. In the past many years, we have developed our skill level and training level to execute such operations. Their missions were fought with a lot of uncertainties and danger. But our trained crew and commando forces which went along with these aircraft ensured these missions were executed flawlessly."

"It required a lot of teamwork and this is precisely what we go through on a daily basis in the Air Force. We are always preparing for such conditions that may arise anywhere across the globe. Recently, along with the Indian Navy, we carried out an operation of dropping speed boats from C-17 aircraft. So the kind of roles and missions we’re expected to do can vary… but with a lot of confidence we are capable of pulling off any operation that comes our way."

Amid the dark depths of the Bay of Bengal, during routine testing and calibration of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle(AUV), a significant clue emerged out of the blue and brought closure to an 8-year-old military aviation mystery, that had claimed the lives of 29 Indian Armed Forces personnel. Based on underwater data collected and analysed by India's National Institute of Ocean Technology(NIOT), Chennai, the Indian Air Force has been able to trace and identify the debris of their Russian-origin An-32 aircraft that had "disappeared" on July 22, 2016, during a routine mission over the Bay of Bengal, off India's east coast.

Recalling how it all unfolded, Dr. G.A. Ramadass, Director, NIOT told WION that the breakthrough finding happened during a deep ocean exploration mission.

"From Kongsberg Maritime, Norway, we procured a sophisticated AUV, Ocean Mineral Explorer 6000, which is capable of functioning fully autonomously, diving to depths of 6kms(6000m) and operating for 48 hours non-stop. We just have to program the vehicle and then it is on its own, until the time it re-surfaces. After it is retrieved, we download the data and study it", he said.

As a coincidence, the vehicle was deployed around the approximate last-known location of the missing aircraft and was recording observations at depths of 3.5 km.

According to him, the NIOT team was not searching for this aircraft that had gone missing eight years ago(for which the massive search had already been abandoned in the same year). However, when they studied the SONAR(Sound Navigation and Ranging) data from the AUV, they noticed strong reflections (indicating the presence of some foreign object on the seafloor).

"Natural objects on the ocean floor have sediments on them and they give very dull SONAR reflections or don't reflect much. However, man-made objects reflect SONAR pings and these reflections give us a clear idea of the presence of foreign objects. The aircraft was not in an intact condition, it was scattered debris. Despite that, we were able to derive adequate data and share it with the Air Force, via the Ministry of Earth Sciences," Dr S. Ramesh, the Chief Scientist for this operation told WION.

He added that the pre-programmed underwater operation had to be meticulously planned, as they did not have real-time control of the vehicle.

So, the vehicle had to be pre-fed instructions to perform SONAR observations from 30m above the seafloor and imaging observations at 5m above the seafloor, he added. However, the vehicle can only perform in-situ studies and cannot collect or return samples.

On Friday, January 12, 2024, the Indian Defence Ministry announced that the "search images were scrutinised and found to be conforming with an An-32 aircraft". They also reasoned that there was no other recorded history of a missing aircraft report in the same region, and therefore this debris possibly belonged to the crashed IAF An-32 (tail number K-2743). According to the Defence Ministry, the debris was spotted 140nautical miles(approx 310kms) from the Chennai coast.

In the morning hours of July 22, 2016, the ill-fated Indian Air Force An-32 plane carrying 29 personnel had taken off from Air Force Station Tambaram, Chennai, on a routine mission to Port Blair, over the Bay of Bengal. As it was flying its 1300kms (approx) journey over the Bay of Bengal, the plane is said to have "disappeared" from radar. Its last-known position was 280 km east of its origin Chennai.

After this incident, the Indian armed forces launched a massive, multi-pronged search and rescue effort, involving ships, submarines and aircraft. With the efforts not yielding results, the search operation had been called off in September of that year, nearly seven weeks after the disappearance.

"Even during the 2016 operation, NIOT had deployed our ships and Remotely Operable Vehicles(ROVs). Back then, we had been carrying out the search from the sea surface using the best assets we had at that time. However, operating SONAR from the surface level does not offer usable results(quality data) at depths of 3000m and more, where we now know that the aircraft is located" Dr Ramadass explained.

In a major boost to the operational setup of the Indian Air Force (IAF), the C-130J aircraft recently landed at the challenging Kargil airstrip at night for the first time ever. The IAF took to its social media handle on Sunday (Jan 7) to announce the significant milestone. “In a first, an IAF C-130J aircraft recently carried out a night landing at the Kargil airstrip," read the post on X (formerly known as Twitter). The IAF added that the mission, characterised by a terrain masking en route, demonstrated the IAF's capabilities in challenging environments as well as helped the Garuds further hone their skills. Kargil is where the 1999 war with Pakistan was fought and having a workhorse like C-130J landing there means that the nation's security is strengthened further. In November last year, IAF similarly landed two of its Lockheed Martin C-130J-30 ‘Super Hercules’ military transport aircraft at a rudimentary and unfeasible airstrip in Uttarakhand.
Since Monday (Dec 18), the Indian Tri-services (Army, Navy, Air Force) and Coast Guard have rescued more than 1,000 persons, including pregnant women, infants and elderly from the floods in south Tamil Nadu. Four districts in southern Tamil Nadu - Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari had received unprecedented amounts of rainfall during the weekend as well as Monday.

It is estimated that the worst-hit districts of Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli received their entire quantum of annual rainfall in a span of two days. It is under such circumstances that the Tamil Nadu Government sought the assistance of the Indian armed forces, Coast Guard and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Indian Air Force chief mulls use of AI & Data Analytics tools to train, evaluate pilots

The Russian-origin Sukhoi-30MKI(more than 250 of them in the fleet) air-superiority fighter is the backbone of the Indian Air Force and the French-origin Dassault Rafale(36 in the fleet) is the latest, most-lethal fighter to be inducted into the Force(IAF).

Across the country, IAF facilities have simulators for training pilots on the Rafales, Sukhois and other jets. However, these are standalone simulators and function individually, without connecting to the others. They help pilots virtually perform take-offs, landings, day and night operations during adverse weather, mid-air refuelling etc.

Indian Air Force Chief VR Chaudhari said that there is an urgent need to modernize, integrate and network these simulators to perform complex combat scenarios, missions and manoeuvres, in a large-scale manner. He placed added emphasis on the need to "Train as we fight and fight as we train."

Four Indian Air Force pilots have been screened and handpicked after multiple rounds of scrutiny, to undertake ISRO's ambitious Gaganyaan Human spaceflight mission to Low Earth orbit.

Since India doesn't yet have an exclusive pool of astronauts, the best option was to pick the ideal candidates from the Indian Air Force pilots, who are accustomed to bearing the high-loads of 'g' forces experienced during complex aerial manoeuvres.

All of us on the Earth's surface of the earth experience '1g' force, which is the ordinary pull of gravity.

During rapid acceleration or deceleration of an aerospace vehicle, this force is manifold (denoted by the number preceding the 'g'). Simply put, the phenomenon is referred to as 'g force' or the acceleration due to gravity.

Given the nature of their profession, fighter pilots are trained to take sustained loads of g forces, thereby making them better suited for undergoing training for astronaut missions.

Indian astronaut candidates had already completed a round of training at Russia's Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre and have been undergoing simulator and theoretical training in India.

In a major breakthrough in India-US defence relations, the Congress in Washington on Wednesday (August 30) cleared GE Aerospace's agreement with state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to produce fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force.

It was during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official state visit to the US that GE Aerospace and HAL signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to produce the jets.

“It is all clear from the legislative end. The sale was approved before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit itself.
Securing the country's skies further, the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Sunday (August 13) inducted four strike-capable Heron Mark 2 drones at a forward air base in the northern sector.
The drone has the strike and reconnaissance capability, rolled into one which allows it to monitor any situation along the border with both China and Pakistan in a single sortie. India secures its skies further as IAF inducts strike-capable drones

The Indian Army, Navy and Air Force (IAF) will finally see the emergence of its full-force theatre commands and it could happen within the coming months. India’s fighting regime is set to change forever with an integrated war machine and here is India's Game Plan for future wars.

What is a theatre command?

A theatre command is a structure designed to control all military assets in a theatre of war. This war-fighting machinery combines forces of all defence services, Army, Navy and Air Force.

Blueprint for India’s theatre commands

Currently, India has only two tri-service commands, the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) and the Strategic Forces Command to handle India’s nuclear assets and 17 individual service commands. Initial plans of the Indian armed forces suggest that these individual commands will be consolidated into five theatre commands: the Northern Land Theatre, Western Land Theatre, Eastern Land Theatre, Maritime Theatre Command and a Logistics Command.

Under the new structure, all theatre commanders will report directly to Chief of Defence Staff, aligning India with the practices of nations like the United States and China.

Also read: The truth behind America's extended defence cooperation with India

Military asset allocation

Under the theatre commands, the military assets will be allocated as per need and operations. For example, the new MQ-9 reaper drones that India is procuring.

These will not be owned by any single theatre command or a single defence service. Instead, these assets will be a theatre resource and will shift from one to another based on the contingency.

Also read: India, a NATO state? Whose gain, whose loss?

Strategic locations

India will begin with three integrated theatre commands, headed by senior three-star generals of the ranks of Lt. Generals, Air Marshals and Vice Admirals or higher. These will be located in the western front with Pakistan, a maritime command in peninsular India and one command to handle the northern borders with China, where currently India has four Army and three IAF commands.

While China continues to rapidly modernise its war-fighting capabilities, India’s theatre command structure is coming into place. This is perhaps the last remaining lacuna that the Indian armed forces are now filling for a seamless coordinated approach to tackle China’s threat. With the tri-service commands in place, India will pose a three-fold threat to all its adversarial neighbours and enemies.

Blueprint for India’s theatre commands Currently, India has only two tri-service commands, the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) and the Strategic Forces Command to handle India’s nuclear assets and 17 individual service commands. Also read: The truth behind America's extended defence cooperation with India Military asset allocation Under the theatre commands, the military assets will be allocated as per need and operations. For example, the new MQ-9 reaper drones that India is procuring. These will not be owned by any single theatre command or a single defence service. Instead, these assets will be a theatre resource and will shift from one to another based on the contingency. Also read: India, a NATO state? Whose gain, whose loss? Strategic locations India will begin with three integrated theatre commands, headed by senior three-star generals of the ranks of Lt.
