The first C-295 medium tactical transport aircraft meant to be delivered to India completed a three-hour-long maiden flight trial in Seville, Spain, French firm Airbus Defence and Space said.

A test flight is meant to validate the performance of the major onboard systems and sub-systems. This aircraft is the first of 56 planes that the Indian Government had ordered&nbsp;for use by the Indian Air Force. While the first 16 aircraft will be assembled in Spain, the remaining will be manufactured and assembled by Tata Advanced Systems (TASL) in Gujarat, India.

Equipped to ferry troops and cargo, the plane is also capable of serving in maritime surveillance, disaster response missions, special missions, medical evacuations etc. In the troop-ferrying role, it is capable of transporting 70 personnel. Being a medium transport aircraft, it offers flexibility and is capable of ferrying troops and cargo to locations that are inaccessible by larger and heavier aircraft.

“This first flight represents a significant accomplishment for the first Make in India aerospace programme. With the Indian Air Force set to become the largest operator of the C295 in the world, this programme exemplifies our commitment to improving&nbsp;the Indian Air Force (IAF) operational capabilities,” said Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Military Air Systems at Airbus Defence and Space.

India acquired 56 C295 aircraft in September 2021 to replace the Air Force's legacy AVRO fleet. The first plane is expected to be delivered to India by the second half of this year, Airbus said. "This programme will significantly contribute to developing the country’s military-industrial ecosystem from the manufacturing to assembly, testing, to delivery and maintenance of the complete lifecycle of the aircraft" the firm added.

Airbus recently revealed that Indian Air Force pilots had commenced the training for operating C295 aircraft, at the Airbus International Training Centre in Spain. The new TASL facility in Gujarat meant for building the C295 planes will be India's first private-run aircraft manufacturing facility.

In a tweet, IAF wrote: "A MiG-21 aircraft of the IAF crashed near Suratgarh during a routine training sortie today morning. The pilot ejected safely, sustaining minor injuries."&nbsp;

The air force also mentioned that an inquiry has been constituted to ascertain the cause of the accident.&nbsp;

IAF also noted that the "pilot experienced an onboard emergency, following which he attempted to recover the aircraft as per existing procedures. Having failed to do so, he initiated an ejection".&nbsp;

Local police have informed about the accident in the Sadar police station area.&nbsp;

Om Prakash, Inspector General of Police, Bikaner, said: "The pilot made all efforts to avert human casualties and crash-landed the plane on the outskirts of the village."&nbsp;

MiG-21 jets have served as the backbone of the country's air force for decades after first entering Indian service in the 1960s, but s number of crashes in the past few decades has raised concerns over the planes and their safety.&nbsp;

Last month, an Indian Army chopper crashed in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, near Machhna village in the district's Marwah tehsil. Reports said that three people onboard the chopper sustained injuries.&nbsp;

In March, a Cheetah helicopter crashed near the Mandala hills area in Arunachal Pradesh, killing the pilot and co-pilot. The pilots were identified as Lieutenant Colonel VVB Reddy and Major Jayanth A.&nbsp;

In January, two fighter jets – Sukhoi-30 and Mirage 2000 – crashed near Morena in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, killing one pilot. The air force said that the jets had taken off from Gwalior and the aircraft were on a routine operational flying training mission.&nbsp;

Squadron Leader Shivangi Singh, the Indian Air Force's (IAF)&nbsp;first female pilot to fly the Rafale combat aircraft, is part of the IAF contingent&nbsp;taking part in the ongoing multinational Exercise Orion in France. Squadron Leader Singh is in France to take part in the exercise, where India has sent Rafale aircraft for the first time outside the country, IAF officers said, according to a report by the news agency ANI on Wednesday (April 26).&nbsp;

Singh joined the air force in 2017 and was commissioned into the second batch of women fighter pilots. And in 2020, she became the first woman fighter pilot to fly the Rafale. Before this, she flew the&nbsp;MiG-21 Bison.

The multinational wargame Exercise Orion is taking place at Mont-de-Marsan in France. ANI reported on Wednesday that Orion involves many of France's NATO and other important allies. More than 7,000 NATO troops have taken part in the drill.&nbsp;

The exercise started on April 17 and will continue till May 5. The IAF's contingent comprises four Rafale aircraft, two C-17s,&nbsp;two ll-78 aircraft, and 165 air warriors. According to an official statement, this would be the&nbsp;first overseas exercise for Rafale aircraft.&nbsp;

“Besides the IAF and the FASF, Air Forces from Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Spain, and the United States would also be flying in this multilateral exercise. Participation in this exercise would further enrich the employment philosophy of the Indian Air Force, by imbibing the best practices from other Air Forces,” the statement added.&nbsp;

On April 17,&nbsp;Emmanuel Lenain, the ambassador of France to India, said, "France warmly welcomes the Indian Air Force (IAF) contingent that will take part in the exercise from today.”

Rafale is the latest aircraft to have been inducted into the IAF. The 36 Rafales have been completely inducted and they have played a significant role in improving India's&nbsp;preparedness along the borders with Pakistan and China.&nbsp;

When efforts by ground teams comprising more than 200 personnel were not providing the desired results, the Indian Air Force was roped in to perform aerial firefighting operations, over the weekend. In multiple sorties, the Air Force's Russian-origin Mi-17 multi-role helicopter had performed 'bambi bucket operations'. This is a process where the chopper carries an underslung bucket and dunks it in a waterbody(preferably closest to the fire site) and then dispenses the water over the blaze.&nbsp;

The IAF chopper had dispensed over 22,000 litres of water and had ensured that the fire was extinguished in two major zones and finally restricted to a limited patch. On Monday and Tuesday, additional ground teams were tasked by the Forest department to carry out the efforts on the ground. Efforts were carried out during the day and night to ensure that the blaze is brought under control.&nbsp;

Thanks to Air Force and forest dept, forest blaze put out after week-long efforts; 200 hectares lost

India and Russia are yet to make final headway to clear outstanding rouble payments for New Delhi's defence purchases from Moscow amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and the US-led economic sanctions against Russia. As the current financial year ends in the absence of a solution to this problem, New Delhi has kicked off a local buying spree for its defence needs, The Indian Express newspaper reported.&nbsp;

This is because a significant chunk of unspent defence funds consist of the rouble payments worth ₹28,000 crore ($3.39 billion) for weapons India procured from Russia, the report concluded. This financial headroom is being utilised for local defence purchases by New Delhi.&nbsp;

<h2>India's potential local defence purchases</h2>

Indian Army, Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy have communicated their various buying and acquisition needs to the defence ministry in the past.&nbsp;

For the Indian Army, this includes the Electronic Warfare system for mountains, and a dedicated communication satellite among others.

For the Indian Air Force, this entails medium and high power radars, six Dornier-228 aircraft and 70 HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft among others.&nbsp;

For the Indian Navy, the buying and acquisition needs consist of fleet support ships, Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs), Next-Generation Missile Vessels and Next Generation Maritime Mobile Coastal Batteries (NGMMCBs) with BrahMos missiles.&nbsp;

India's defence ministry on Monday signed a contract with Vishakhapatnam-headquartered Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) for normal refit of a third Kilo Class diesel-electric submarine Sindhukirti, The Indian Express reported.&nbsp;

Last Friday, the Ministry of Defence greenlighted a ₹667 Crore ($80.89 million) contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to procure six Dornier-228 aircraft meant to be used for transport and communication duties.&nbsp;

Earlier in March 2023, the procurement for 70 HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft was approved with HAL at ₹6,828 Crore ($828 million), The Indian Express report added.

India and Russia are yet to make final headway to clear outstanding rouble payments for New Delhi's defence purchases from Moscow amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and the US-led economic sanctions against Russia. As the current financial year ends in the absence of a solution to this problem, New Delhi has kicked off a local buying spree for its defence needs, The Indian Express newspaper reported. This is because a significant chunk of unspent defence funds consist of the rouble payments worth ₹28,000 crore ($3.39 billion) for weapons India procured from Russia, the report concluded. This financial headroom is being utilised for local defence purchases by New Delhi. What are these three International Air Force Exercises? Exercise Desert Flag VIII An Indian contingent of 110 Air Warriors is at Al Dhafra airbase of the UAE, taking part in Exercise Desert Flag VIII. The Indian Air Force is participating with five LCA Tejas fighters and two C-17 Globemaster III strategic heavy-lifter aircraft. Notably, this is the first-ever international flying exercise that India's indigenously-built Tejas will be flying in. Exercise Desert Flag is a multilateral air exercise in which the air forces from UAE, France, Kuwait, Australia, the UK, Bahrain, Morocco, Spain, the Republic of Korea, USA would be taking part. The exercise is going on from 27th February to 17th March. The exercise is aimed at facilitating diverse fighter jet engagements and learning from the best practices. Exercise Cobra Warrior A 145-member team of the Indian Air Force are at UK's Waddington Air Force Base for the multilateral Air Exercise Cobra warrior. Air forces from Sweden, Finland, South Africa, the USA and Singapore would be taking part alongside the Royal Air Force and Indian Air Force. The IAF has deployed five Mirage-2000 fighters, two C-17 Globemaster III strategic heavy-lifter aircraft and an IL-78 mid-air refueller aircraft. The exercise is being conducted from 6th to 24th March. Exercise Shinyuu Maitri On the sidelines of the Indo-Japan Joint Army Exercise Dharma Guardian, the respective air forces are taking part in Exercise Maitri 23 which focuses on heavy-lift transport aircraft operations. The IAF contingent is taking part in one C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, whereas the Japanese JASDF will be fielding the C-2 transport aircraft. The exercise will comprise discussions on transport operations and tactical manoeuvring, followed by flying drills. The ongoing exercise is being conducted on March 1st and 2nd in Japan. In terms of specifications and features, the HTT-40 is a twin-seater, fully aerobatic turboprop aircraft with a fully air-conditioned cockpit, modern avionics etc. The aircraft is also capable of being hot-refuelled (to refuel while the engine is running) and is equipped with zero-zero ejection seats (which enable ejections at low speeds and low altitudes, even in ground mishaps).&nbsp;

The procurement will include the 70 aircraft, their associated equipment and training aids including simulators. Being an indigenous solution, the aircraft is said to be configurable for upgrades to incorporate the futuristic requirements of the Indian Armed Forces. The HTT-40 contains nearly 56 per cent indigenous content, which will progressively increase to over 60 per cent through the indigenisation of major components and subsystems.&nbsp;

To fulfil this order, HAL would engage Indian private industry, including Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), in its supply chain and this procurement is said to have the potential to provide direct employment to 1,500 personnel and indirect employment for up to 3,000 individuals in more than 100 MSMEs.&nbsp;

Indian Air Force to get 70 'HTT-40' made-in-India trainer aircraft from HAL

The seventh "Operation Dost" aircraft, carrying more than 23 tonnes of relief aid, landed in earthquake-stricken Syria. Moutaz Douaji, the deputy minister of local administration and the environment, welcomed the plane at the airport in Damascus on Sunday (February 12), as reported by the PTI.&nbsp;

"The 7th #OperationDost flight reached Syria with over 23 tonnes of relief material, including gensets, solar lamps, emergency &amp; critical care medicines, and&nbsp;disaster relief consumables. Received at Damascus airport by Deputy Minister of Local Administration and Environment Moutaz Douaji," tweeted Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi.

As per schedule the IAF aircraft first landed in Syria, unloaded its supplies there, then flew to Turkey with emergency and critical care medicines, and other humanitarian supplies. The external affairs minister, S Jaishankar, also mentioned the airplane leaving Ghaziabad on his Twitter account.

He tweeted, "The 7th #OperationDost flight departs for Syria and Turkey. Flight is carrying relief material, medical aid, emergency &amp; critical care medicines, medical equipment &amp; consumables."

The Indian Army also tweeted, "An #IAF C-17 aircraft got airborne last night for #Syria and #Turkiye, bearing relief material and emergency equipment."

The aid being sent for Syria comprises relief materials, sleeping mats, gensets, solar lamps, tarpaulins, blankets, emergency and critical care medicines, and disaster relief consumables, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

A massive earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023.&nbsp;The death toll from the quakes that hit southeastern Turkiye and northern Syria stood at 33,179 on Sunday. The United Nations (UN) has estimated a combined total death toll of 50,000.&nbsp;

In response to the terrible earthquakes and aftershocks that struck the area, India initiated Operation Dost to provide aid to Turkey and Syria.

India is providing Turkey and Syria with a significant amount of humanitarian assistance as part of "Operation Dost".

Born in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, she attended a school in Deoland, a small town in the same state. However, prior to joining the IAF, Chaturvedi finished her degree in Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science from Banasthali University in Rajasthan. Her passion to conquer the skies also led her to join the Flying Club in her college.&nbsp;

Subsequently, she underwent six months of intensive training at the Hyderabad Air Force Academy in Telangana, before being inducted into the IAF fighter squadron in June 2016. Today, there are 17 female fighter pilots in the IAF and squadron leader Chaturvedi along with her batchmate Kanth flies the Russian-origin Sukhoi fighter jet at the air force’s Jodhpur air base.&nbsp;

Notably, there are more than 145 female helicopter and transport aircraft pilots in the Indian Armed Forces which include the Army, Navy and the IAF. Out of which at least 30 have been deployed on the frontline warships while another 100 have been trained as military police women for the Army. However, female officers are still not allowed to serve in the armed forces’ main combat arms or Navy’s submarines said a report by Times of India.&nbsp;

What is the Veer Guardian 2023?

It is a joint Air Exercise between India and Japan to bolster air defence cooperation between the two countries. In a statement, India’s air force said, “IAF will participate with four Su-30 MKI, two C-17 Globemasters &amp; an IL-78 tanker.” Meanwhile, the JASDF will be participating with four F-2 and four F-15 fighter jets, the statement added.&nbsp;

This comes after the second 2+2 meeting of defence and foreign ministers in Tokyo last year when India and Japan had first unveiled their plans to conduct the joint exercise. “This exercise will thus be another step towards deepening strategic ties and defence cooperation between the two countries,” said the IAF.&nbsp;

The IAF added, “The inaugural exercise will include the conduct of various aerial combat drills between the two air forces. They will undertake multi-domain air combat missions in a complex environment and will exchange best practices.” According to the statement, experts from both countries will also discuss and share their expertise on “varied operational aspects.”

A consortium led by Tata Group and Airbus will be manufacturing the C-295 transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force in Vadodara city of western Gujarat state, in a major boost to the Make in India policy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the manducating facility on Sunday.

Announcing the project, which is worth Rs 220 billion, the defence ministry on Thursday said that this is the first time that a military plane will be manufactured in India by a private company.

"For the first time, the C-295 aircraft will be manufactured outside of Europe,” Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar told reporters.

The conception of a manufacturing facility in Vadodara is the result of an agreement signed by India with Airbus Defence and Space to procure 56 C295 transport aircraft in a bid to replace the ageing Avro-748 planes for the IAF.

Under the deal, Airbus will deliver the first 16 aircraft in ‘fly-away’ condition from its final assembly line in Seville, Spain, within four years, while the subsequent 40 aircraft will be manufactured and assembled by Tata Advanced Systems (TASL) in India.

"The first 16 fly-away aircraft are scheduled to be received between September 2023 and August 2025. The first Made-in-India aircraft is expected in September 2026," Kumar said, speaking from Kerala through video conference.

He said that the plan’s components will be 96 per cent indigenous, barring the engine of the aircraft. "96 per cent of the work that Airbus does at its facility in Spain will be done in India."

Tata Consortium has identified more than 125 in-country MSME suppliers spread over seven states, Kumar said, adding that it will generate employment in the aerospace industry in the country.

The new facility is expected to generate 600 highly skilled jobs directly, over 3,000 indirect jobs and an additional 3,000 medium skill employment opportunities with more than 4 million man hours of work within the aerospace and defence sector, the defence ministry said.

Nearly 240 engineers will be trained at the Airbus facility in Spain for the project, it added.

As per Times Now, the new battle fatigues carry a digitally pixelated design and not the organic patterns that were used earlier.

The digital pattern of the new uniform is all-terrain friendly. It gives the personnel the freedom and the flexibility to seamlessly move from deserts to mountainous lands, to woodlands etc.

PTI reports that a senior IAF officer who was wearing the new combat uniform during the anniversary celebrations in Chandigarh, said that the new pattern is called a "disruptive pattern" and it is a terrain pattern.

"If you are undertaking an operation in hilly areas, in desert or in jungle, this pattern merges with the terrain so that we remain camouflaged while undertaking our military operations. This is a very light cloth and moreover, boots are also light," he said adding that the uniform is indigenously made.

Chaudhari added that drones, swarm drones, hypersonic weapons, and space-based ISR systems have added a new dimension to warfare. 
 
"Artificial intelligence is being used for a quicker decision making and analysis of big data. I am happy to report that several projects are well underway to utilise the potential of automation, data analytics, and artificial intelligence to transform our operational philosophy," he said. 
 
Air Chief Marshal also announced that IAF is planning induction of women Agniveers from&nbsp;next year. 
 
A formal parade was held at the air force base to mark the day. A march-past was conducted after the Air Chief Marshal had inspected the procession.

Senior IAF officers in attendance were Air Marshal Sreekumar Prabhakaran, Air-Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Air Command.

India: Centre has given nod to weapon system branch for IAF officers, says Air Chief Marshal

The Indian Air Force is all set to retire its soviet-era MIG-21 squadron, of which wingman Abhinandan Varthaman was a part when he shot down Pakistan’s F-16 combat aircraft a day after the Balakot airstrike in February 2019.

The force will be retiring its ageing fleet, which is currently based in Srinagar city of norther Jammu and Kashmir, on September 30, according to reports.

The No. 51 Squadron, called the 'Sword Arms', is one of its four remaining squadrons of ageing MiG-21 fighter jets.

The remaining three squadrons of MiG-21 will be phased out by 2025, PTI news agency reported quoting defence sources.

The decision to retire the ageing fleet is part of the IAF’s move to phase out the MIG-21 by 2025.

In July, PTI reported that the IAF had drawn up a three-year timeline to phase out the remaining four MIG-21 fighter squadrons as part of a ‘modernisation drive’.

For several years, the Soviet-era Russian fighter has been making the headlines due to multiple crashes causing the death of pilots.

Since 1970, over 170 Indian pilots and 40 civilians have been killed in MiG-21 accidents. Since 2010, more than 20 aircraft have crashed and 38 aircraft crashed in the decade after 2003, according to data released by the Defence Ministry.

Nearly 300 accidents have been reported since 1963. Due to its high rate of accidents, the fighter aircraft has earned the moniker “Flying Coffin”

However, defence officials said that MiG21s are being retired not solely based on their ageing factor.

"Ageing is a factor, but we read reports that even a modern aircraft can crash. A crash can happen due to multiple factors, including weather," the source was quoted as saying.

The 2019 Balakot strike was launched in response to the Pulwama terror attack which claimed the lives of 40 troops of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), one of India’s paramilitary forces.

The IAF fighter jets had bombed a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist training camp in the Pakistan-occupied territory of the Balakot region.

Varthaman, who is now the Group Captain, shot down a Pakistani F16 in a dog fight after the Pakistan Air Force launched retaliation to the Balakot air strike.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has decided to phase out the remaining four squadrons of the Soviet-era MiG-21 fighter aircraft within a three-year time frame, with one of them likely to retire from service in September this year, according to reports.

The air force plans to retire all&nbsp;four MiG-21 squadrons by 2025. Currently, the IAF has around 70 MiG-21 aircraft and 50 MiG-29 variants.

Apart from that, plans are also afoot to retire the MiG-29 fleet, with the officials drawing up a timeline to phase out in the next five years.

Notably, the decision comes days after two IAF pilots died after MiG-21 fighter aircraft they were flying crashed in western Rajasthan's Barmer district on Thursday. A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.

But the officials maintained that the plan to retire the ageing fleet is part of the IAF’s modernisation drive and not linked to Barmer incident, according to PTI news agency.

Srinagar-based No. 51 squadron, which is also known as “Sword Arms,” is set to be retired by September 30. The squadron generally comprises 17 to 20 aircraft.

MiGs long stay in the IAF

The MiG-21 is India’s longest-serving fighter plane. However, the aircraft has had a very poor safety record of late.

The aircraft was designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau (OKB) of the erstwhile Soviet Union, and it made its maiden flight on 16 June, 1955.

The first fleet of the MiG variant was inducted into the IAF in 1963 and India procured over 700 MiG-variants in the subsequent decades.

India’s decision to buy MiG series should be looked through the prism of 1962 war China and growing hostility from Pakistan. At the time, India was desperately scaling up its military capability to prepare for attack despite cash-strapped economy.

The Soviet Union was willing to sell this fighter aircraft on extremely favourable terms and even agreed for licensed production by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Since then the plane has seen several updates and modifications.

In 2000, Indian MiG-21s were upgraded with new censors and weapons. The modified version was later used by Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman who shot down a F-16 fighter of Pakistan in 2019, a day after India had carried out air strikes in Balakot.

Number of crashes and deaths

Though MiGs are the backbone of the IAF, the aircraft has earned numerous monikers, such as ‘flying coffin’&nbsp;and ‘widow maker’ due to frequent crashes.

According to a Times of India newspaper report, over 400 MiG-21s have crashed since 1971-72, killing over 200 pilots and another 50 people on the ground.

Bharat-Rakshak.com, an aviation website that works closely with the IAF, has documented the accidents that the MiG has seen since its induction. The first two MiG crashes took place in December 1963.

Why is India still using MiG-21?

According to reports, the MiG-21 had completed its retirement period in the mid-1990s.

It is not as if IAF was impervious to the series of crashes and the faulty mechanism of the MiGs. Due to delays in induction of new fighter aircraft, the IAF has been forced to keep the ageing flights to maintain a certain squadron strength to guard India's skies.

Apart from that, there have been delays in the indigenous Tejas programme, political controversy surrounding the Rafael deal and slow-paced procurement procedure. With no avenues to increase the fleet strength, the IAF had to keep MiGs in service longer than usual.

For a long time, the IAF relied heavily on MiG-21s, and the 51st squadron is renowned for successfully repelling Pakistan's aerial assault on India on February 27, 2019. The MiG-21 fighter jets, however, had a very bad safety record. Therefore, the air force has begun replacing them with stronger aircraft like the Su-30 and indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA).

Five pilots have died in six MiG-21 crashes during the past 20 months.

The LCA Tejas aircraft were scheduled to replace the MiG-21s long ago, but delays in their introduction have compelled the IAF to continue using these aircraft.

Before flying, the IAF conducts thorough inspections of these aircraft, and all safety precautions are taken, according to the officer.

The officials announced that the number-plated squadron will soon be reactivated with a more capable aircraft.

The MiG-21 aircraft crash has once again brought attention to the IAF's ageing fleet of Soviet-made MiG-21 aircraft, which have been in approximately 200 accidents since they were initially introduced in the early 1960s.&nbsp;

A massive fire has broken out in India's Sariska Tiger Reserve in the state of Rajasthan. Officials have been quoted by news agency PTI to say that cause of the fire was unknown. The blaze erupted on Monday (March 28) evening.

Forest officials said that Tiger movement in the area has been affected by the fire.

Massive effort is on to douse the fire. Officials have said that around 150-200 people including the forest staff are trying to extinguish the flames.

"Villagers residing in the periphery of the fire-affected area have been asked to move to safety," the official said. The official was quoted by PTI.

Indian Army and Air Force have also joined the effort. Two air force&nbsp;helicopters are helping the forest staff fight the flames.

Three C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force, carrying 629 Indians from neighbouring countries of Ukraine, landed at the Hindan air base near New Delhi on Saturday morning.

Under Operation Ganga, these flights evacuated Indian nationals from Romania, Slovakia and Poland.

They also carried 16.5 tonnes of relief load from India to these countries.

Till date, the IAF has flown 10 flights to bring back 2,056 passengers, while taking 26 tonnes of relief load to these countries, as part of Op Ganga, the IAF said in a statement.

"We will continue Operation Ganga till the last person gets evacuated. Roughly 2,000-3,000 (more Indians) are likely to be there (in Ukraine), the number can vary," Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said at a briefing.

"Our primary focus is to get Indian students out of conflict zones in eastern Ukraine. We are urging both sides (Russia and Ukraine) to find ways so that we can take out our citizens. A local ceasefire would help," he added.

Operation Ganga: Three IAF’s C-17 aircraft land in India with 629 citizens

Seven years back, the then 21-year-old Saurabh Kumar faced a common career dilemma --- pursue his passion or secure a safe future.

Employed with Indian Air Force on sports quota, Saurabh was at the crossroads. He had a secure central government job with all the perks but his heart pushed him to play professional cricket and earn that coveted India jersey.

"There comes a moment in life when you have to take a decision. Jo bhi ho lena padhta hai," the 28-year-old orthodox left-arm spinner and newest entrant to the Indian Test squad told PTI in an interview.

"It was a tough decision to quit playing Ranji Trophy for the Services. I loved being an Indian Air Force man and part of Indian defence but there was a part of me that felt that I have it in me to work hard and play for India," the cricketer, who hails from UP's Baghpat District said.

"I was posted in Delhi. I played for Services in the Ranji Trophy for one year (2014-15 season) when Rajat Palliwal was our captain.

"Since I was a sports quota entry, I didn't have to do any duty apart from play for Services. If I had quit cricket, then I would have had to do full-time duty," he recollected the old days.

Hailing from a middle-class family, his father worked as a JE (Junior Engineer) at the All India Radio. His parents were firmly supportive of his decision to trade profession with passion.

"It is amazing that when I told my parents that I am leaving Air-force job, they didn't for once asked me to reconsider. Both were very supportive of my choice.

"It was my decision to leave IAF but when I saw that parents were supportive, I got a lot of confidence to independently pursue my dream," Saurabh said.

Left-arm spinner's doggedness

There is something about left-arm spinners that make them special and one of the character traits is the doggedness which Saurabh believes that he had in abundance.

"Now, we stay in Ghaziabad but during those early days of playing cricket in Delhi, it was a big ordeal. In my town Baraut in Baghpat district, we didn't have great coaching facilities. So I had to take a daily train to come to Delhi for my training at National Stadium," he said.

For the uninitiated, Saurabh's coach is Sunita Sharma, the only female cricket Droancharya in India, whose other notable disciple is former keeper Deep Dasgupta.

"If I had a 2:00pm afternoon nets. I left home at 10 am in the morning. It would be a three and half hour train journey and another half an hour to reach the stadium. And same while coming back. It was tough but that's what helped me when I look back," said the man, who had 95 wickets in last two first-class seasons (2018-19, 2019-20). 
 
"When you are 15 or 16 year old, you don't realise. Aap mein junoon itna hota hai, ki kuch bhi aapko mushkil nahi agta hai sir (When you have so much passion, nothing looks difficult)."

One of the turning points for Saurabh as a young cricketer was coming under legendary Bishan Singh Bedi's tutelage. Back in the day, Bedi used to organise Summer Camps and a lot of youngsters practiced over there.

"Bedi sir liked what he saw in my bowling. He introduced me to the world of nuance about little things on grip and stuff. No major changes as he liked my action and loved the areas I bowled into.

"One thing that happened during those Summer Camps was I got a chance to bowl hundreds of overs. Bedi sir had one mantra "Mehnat mein kaami nahi honi chhaiye". There should be no short cut to success," he added.

Once he entered the UP age-group teams, it was former state keeper Manoj Mudgal, who backed him a lot and the result is 196 wickets and 1572 runs from 46 first-class games.

Unlucky to miss Irani Cup

Saurabh during his two seasons of 51 and 44 wickets had once got a call-up for Irani Cup which had to be called off due to COVID-19 in 2020.

"When I was picked for Rest of India, I knew that I am now on the radar of selectors. I had been bowing pretty well and was confident but then it didn't happen and I lost my chance to showcase my talent in Irani Cup."

But he continued working hard.

"Main kisi bhi cheez mein laga reh sakta hoon. I can work hard for long hours without any fuss."

Life was about to change as he finally got an India A call-up to go to South Africa and played two A Tests in Bloemfontein. He must have impressed the coaches as the senior team then kept him as a stand by bowler for the Test series.

"It was a dream come true as I got a chance to bowl to the senior India players like Virat Kohli, KL Rahul. It was a massive learning curve for me. They gave valuable tips that will help me improve as a bowler."

Saurabh was once picked for Rs 10 lakh by Rising Pune Supergiants back in 2017 but this time, days before his maiden India call-up, he went unsold at the IPL auctions. But he has no regrets.

"Not even one percent regret sir. This is life. Zindagi mein upar neeche toh hota rahega. Zaroorat hai toh lage rehne ka (There will be ups and down in life. All you need is to hang on.). I am doing just that," he signed off.

"There comes a moment in life when you have to take a decision. Jo bhi ho lena padhta hai," the 28-year-old orthodox left-arm spinner and newest entrant to the Indian Test squad told PTI in an interview. "It was a tough decision to quit playing Ranji Trophy for the Services. I loved being an Indian Air Force man and part of Indian defence but there was a part of me that felt that I have it in me to work hard and play for India," the cricketer, who hails from UP's Baghpat District said. I played for Services in the Ranji Trophy for one year (2014-15 season) when Rajat Palliwal was our captain. "Since I was a sports quota entry, I didn't have to do any duty apart from play for Services. If I had quit cricket, then I would have had to do full-time duty," he recollected the old days. Hailing from a middle-class family, his father worked as a JE (Junior Engineer) at the All India Radio. His parents were firmly supportive of his decision to trade profession with passion. "It is amazing that when I told my parents that I am leaving Air-force job, they didn't for once asked me to reconsider. Both were very supportive of my choice. "It was my decision to leave IAF but when I saw that parents were supportive, I got a lot of confidence to independently pursue my dream," Saurabh said. "Now, we stay in Ghaziabad but during those early days of playing cricket in Delhi, it was a big ordeal. In my town Baraut in Baghpat district, we didn't have great coaching facilities. So I had to take a daily train to come to Delhi for my training at National Stadium," he said. For the uninitiated, Saurabh's coach is Sunita Sharma, the only female cricket Droancharya in India, whose other notable disciple is former keeper Deep Dasgupta. "If I had a 2:00pm afternoon nets. I left home at 10 am in the morning. It would be a three and half hour train journey and another half an hour to reach the stadium. And same while coming back. It was tough but that's what helped me when I look back," said the man, who had 95 wickets in last two first-class seasons (2018-19, 2019-20). "When you are 15 or 16 year old, you don't realise. Aap mein junoon itna hota hai, ki kuch bhi aapko mushkil nahi agta hai sir (When you have so much passion, nothing looks difficult)." Back in the day, Bedi used to organise Summer Camps and a lot of youngsters practiced over there. "Bedi sir liked what he saw in my bowling. He introduced me to the world of nuance about little things on grip and stuff. No major changes as he liked my action and loved the areas I bowled into. "One thing that happened during those Summer Camps was I got a chance to bowl hundreds of overs. Bedi sir had one mantra "Mehnat mein kaami nahi honi chhaiye". There should be no short cut to success," he added. Once he entered the UP age-group teams, it was former state keeper Manoj Mudgal, who backed him a lot and the result is 196 wickets and 1572 runs from 46 first-class games. Unlucky to miss Irani Cup ================ Saurabh during his two seasons of 51 and 44 wickets had once got a call-up for Irani Cup which had to be called off due to COVID-19 in 2020. "When I was picked for Rest of India, I knew that I am now on the radar of selectors. I had been bowing pretty well and was confident but then it didn't happen and I lost my chance to showcase my talent in Irani Cup." But he continued working hard. "Main kisi bhi cheez mein laga reh sakta hoon. I can work hard for long hours without any fuss." Life was about to change as he finally got an India A call-up to go to South Africa and played two A Tests in Bloemfontein. He must have impressed the coaches as the senior team then kept him as a stand by bowler for the Test series. "It was a dream come true as I got a chance to bowl to the senior India players like Virat Kohli, KL Rahul. It was a massive learning curve for me. They gave valuable tips that will help me improve as a bowler." Republic Day 2022 parade on New Delhi's Raj Path is&nbsp;going to be special. One of the main attraction of the annual program will be the largest fly-past ever. For the first time ever, the fly-past will include 75 planes/helicopters of the Indian Air Force that will fly in various formations. This year is marking `Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav` or 75th year of Indian independence.

Vintage as well as current modern aircraft/helicopters like Rafale, Sukhoi, Jaguar, Mi-17, Sarang, Apache and Dakota, will display different formations, including Rahat, Meghna, Eklavya, Trishul, Tiranga, Vijay and Amrit. The parade will showcase India's military power and cultural diversity.

"Several firsts planned during the main parade include the launch of `Shaheedon Ko Shat Shat Naman` programme by National Cadet Corps, a grand flypast by 75 aircraft/helicopters of the Indian Air Force, cultural performances by 480 dancers, display of ten scrolls each of 75 metres prepared during the `Kala Kumbh` event," said India's defence ministry in an official statement.

The ministry said that, a drone show by 1,000 indigenously developed drones has also been planned for the `Beating the Retreat` ceremony, along with projection mapping.&nbsp;

Unfurling of the Indian flag

As per tradition, the National Flag will be unfurled followed by the National Anthem with a booming 21-gun salute. The parade will commence with President Ram Nath Kovind taking the salute.&nbsp;

The parade will be commanded by Parade Commander, Lieutenant General Vijay Kumar Mishra, Ati Vishisth Seva Medal, a second-generation Army officer. Major General Alok Kacker, Chief of Staff, Delhi Area will be the Parade Second-in-Command. A total of six marching contingents of the Indian Army will be present in the parade including the Rajput Regiment, the Assam Regiment, the Jammu &amp; Kashmir Light Regiment, the Sikh Light Regiment, the Army Ordnance Corps and the Parachute Regiment.

The combined Band of the Madras Regimental Centre, the Kumoun Regimental Centre, Maratha Light Regimental Centre, Jammu &amp; Kashmir Light Regimental Centre, Army Medical Corps Centre and School, 14 Gorkha Training Centre, Army Supply Corps Centre and College, Bihar Regimental Centre and Army Ordnance Corps Centre will also march past the saluting dais.

"The Indian Army will be represented by a Mounted Column of 61 Cavalry, 14 Mechanised Columns, six marching contingents and a fly past by Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) of Army Aviation. One Tank PT-76 and Centurion (On Tank Transporters) and two MBT Arjun MK-I, one APC TOPAS and BMP-I (On Tank Transporter) and Two BMP-II, one 75/24 Towed Gun (On Vehicle) and two Dhanush Gun System, one PMS Bridge and Two Sarvatra Bridge System, one HT-16 (On Vehicle) and two Tarang Shakti Electronic Warfare System, one Tiger Cat Missile &amp; two Akash Missile System will be the main attraction in the mechanised columns," the statement further said.

The theme of the marching contingents of the Indian Army is the evolution of the uniform and personnel weapons of the Indian Army over the last 75 years.

Rajput Regiment

"The contingent of the Rajput Regiment will be wearing the uniform of Indian Army of 1947 and would be carrying .303 Rifle. The Assam Regiment will be in uniform during the period of the 1962 and carrying .303 Rifles. The Jammu and Kashmir Light Regiment would be in uniform worn during 1971 and would carry 7.62mm self loading Rifle. The contingent of the Sikh Light Regiment and the Army Ordnance Corps would be in the present day uniform with 5.56mm INSAS Rifle," said the Defence Ministry."The contingent of the Parachute Regiment would be donning the new Combat Uniform of Indian Army, unveiled on January 15, 2022 and would be carrying 5.56mm x 45mm TAVOR Rifle," it added.

Naval contingent

Meanwhile, the Naval contingent will comprise of 96 young sailors and four officers led by Lt Cdr Aanchal Sharma as Contingent Commander. It will be followed by the Naval Tableau which is designed with the aim to showcase the multi-dimensional capabilities of the Indian Navy. The forward part of the tableau depicts the Naval Uprising of 1946, which contributed in India`s struggle for independence. The rear section illustrates the `Make in India` initiatives of the Indian Navy from 1983 to 2021. The model of New Vikrant with LCA Navy in air flanked by models of indigenously designed and built warships.&nbsp;

The frames on the sides of the trailer depict the construction of Indian Naval platforms in India.&nbsp;

Indian Air Force contingent

The Indian Air Force contingent comprises of 96 airmen and four officers and will be led by Squadron Leader Prashant Swamyanathan. The Air Force tableau is titled `Indian Air Force, Transforming for the Future`.&nbsp;

The tableau showcases scaled down models of MiG-21, Gnat, Light Combat Helicopter and Rafale aircraft, as well as the Aslesha radar.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will display two tableaux, signifying the defence technological advancements of country. The tableaux are titled `Suite of Indigenously Developed Sensors, Weapons and Electronic Warfare Systems for LCA Tejas` and `Air Independent Propulsion System` developed for the submarines of Indian Navy.The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) contingent will be led by Deputy Commandant H T Manjunath.&nbsp;

Other contingents

The marching contingents of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), led by Assistant Commandant Ajay Malik, 15 times winner of best marching contingent, Delhi Police, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Vivek Bhagat, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) commanded by Assistant Commandant Mohnish Bagree, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) led by Deputy Commandant Nirupesh Kumar and Border Security Force (BSF) Camel Contingent headed by Deputy Commandant Manohar Singh Kheechee will also march past the saluting dais.

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) Boys Marching contingent, comprising of 100 Senior Division cadets, will be led by Senior Under Officer Rupendra Singh Chauhan of the Punjab Directorate. Senior Under Officer Pramila of Karnataka Directorate will head the NCC Girls Marching contingent, consisting of 100 Senior Wing Cadets drawn from all 17 Directorates.&nbsp;

The marching contingent of National Service Scheme (NSS), comprising of 100 volunteers, will be headed by Baraiya Siddhi Ramesh from Diu Union Territory, Ahmedabad Directorate.

The Tableaux

It will be followed by tableaux of 12 States/Union Territories and nine Ministries/Departments. The theme of tableaux of Arunachal Pradesh is Anglo-Abor (Adi) Wars; Haryana`s is Haryana: No 1 in Sports; Chattisgarh`s is 'Godhan Nyay Yojana: A new path to prosperity; Goa`s is 'Symbols of Goan heritage'; Gujarat's is 'Tribal Revolutionaries of Gujarat'; Jammu and Kashmir`s is 'Changing face of Jammu and Kashmir', among others.

The ceremony will culminate with the national anthem and the release of Tri-colour balloons.
