As a consequence, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has roped in Beuran Hendricks to replace Ngidi at the heart of the pace attack.

Indian bowling coach Paras Mhambrey is in awe of Indian speedster Mohammed Shami after a dazzling ODI World Cup campaign. With the Indian team now set to play South Africa, the bowling coach was full of praise for the Indian pacer who was the highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 24 despite sitting out on the bench for the opening four matches. According to Mhambrey, Shami is a special talent and showed his class during the tournament.

Mhambrey in awe of Shami

"Well, if I tell you that coaches could create a bowler like Shami, then I would be lying. If a bowler can land it on an upright seam every time, then every other bowler in the world will be Shami," Mhambrey told PTI in an interview.

"It is a skill that Shami has acquired with tremendous hard work and developed himself into the bowler that he is. Bowling ball after ball on the seam and with that perfect wrist position and getting it to move either way is a rare skill set. A lot of bowlers, even if they land deliveries on the seam, will see the ball straightening up after pitching," Mhambrey added.

Shami doubt for Test series

Shami’s participation in the Test series against Proteas remains shrouded in suspense as he continues to recover from the troubling ankle injury. With India scheduled to play two Tests against South Africa, starting with the Boxing Day Test in Centurion, Shami was named in the squad, subject to fitness. The speedster is also listed to play in the three-day warm-up game before the first Test in Pretoria.

Former Indian pacer S Sreesanth feels Virat Kohli will be India's X-factor during their forthcoming Test series versus South Africa. India will resume their campaign in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle when they face hosts South Africa in the series opener on Dec 26. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian side will look to win their maiden red-ball series in South Africa. Sreesanth feels Kohli will be India's main player in the two Tests.

Speaking to the Firstpost, Sreesanth also stated that the 35-year-old Kohli -- who ended with most runs in ODI WC at home (765 runs -- most by any in a single edition) -- takes it up on himself to deliver excellence every time he plays. Hence, he will be India's X-factor versus the Temba Bavuma-led Proteas.

The BCCI selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, announced India's 16-member squad for the upcoming two-match Test series versus South Africa, to be held in the African nation. Rohit Sharma will lead the side comprising the experience of R Ashwin, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and KL Rahul (who returns in the red-ball setup after his injury) whereas the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane sit out. Bumrah has been named as Rohit's deputy.

Pujara was not part of India's last Test series -- where they beat West Indies 1-0 in the Caribbean island early this year. Rahane, who retained his place for the WI series post his impressive comeback in the 2021-23 WTC final, is also out of the squad. His scores in the WI Tests were 3 and 8.

Pujara continues to remain out of contention after his lengthy barren run. He managed to break his four-year-long century drought during the Bangladesh Tests in Dec 2022, but since then only managed one fifty-plus score. In addition, his twin failures in the WTC final, in June, led to his omission.

Youngsters such as Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill and inexperienced pacers namely Mukesh Kumar and Prasidh Krishna have been preferred as the selection committee have one eye on the future.

SA vs Ind: BCCI announces 16-man Test squad, Rohit to lead with Bumrah named deputy, big stars miss out

The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) selection committee is likely to approach Rohit Sharma to lead in the upcoming T20I series against South Africa as the Men in Blue prepare for the tour. The Indian team set to play three T20Is during the tour is likely to call back Rohit in the T20I set-up having not played in the shortest format since November 2022. However, with Hardik Pandya not available and other players lacking experience to lead the side, Rohit remains the only player that the Ajit Agarkar-led committee could approach.

Rohit to lead India in T20Is?

"Yes, there remains a question of what happens when Hardik comes back but in BCCI, they feel that if Rohit agrees to lead in T20Is, he will lead in the T20 World Cup. In case Rohit doesn't agree then Surya continues as captain for T20Is in South Africa," a BCCI source privy to the development told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

The selection committee will announce the squad for the South Africa tour on Thursday as plenty of players keeping their fingers crossed. Apart from Rohit, Virat Kohli has also stayed away from the T20I set-up with his last game also coming in the excruciating defeat against England in the semifinal of the 2022 T20 World Cup. Jasprit Bumrah’s availability for the T20I series is still in question which sees Suryakumar Yadav as the only captaincy material in the side.

As things stand, the board is looking for temporary stability having also offered contract extension to coach Rahul Dravid. Rohit handling the T20I side could also see him being considered to lead the 2024 T20 World Cup side, despite few reports stating he is not keen on leading in the shortest format. However, considering the pecking order, Rohit is still the best option India could have rather than handing the reins to Suryakumar Yadav or young talents like Shreyas Iyer or Shubman Gill.

The committee is likely to focus on the Test side as well with Ajinkya Rahane being the big topic of debate. His inclusion could hinge on the availability of players as he remains down the pecking order with Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul and Iyer being the first team players to return. This could also mean Cheteshwar Pujara will have to sit out of the squad with him unlikely to feature for the national side any time soon with the England tour also approaching.

BCCI likely to ask Rohit Sharma to lead in South Africa T20I series: Reports

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has blasted Pakistan's ex-cricketer Mohammad Hafeez for calling Virat Kohli 'selfish' following his unbeaten 101 in India's 243-run win over South Africa in match 37 of ODI World Cup 2023 on Sunday (Nov 5), in Kolkata. Hafeez pointed out that Kohli was playing slow and didn't try the big shots in the end overs in a bid to reach his 49th ODI ton and equal Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar for most hundreds in the format.

'This is utter nonsense': Michael Vaughan SLAMS Mohammad Hafeez for calling Virat Kohli 'selfish'

Starting from Australia to Pakistan, from the Kiwis to the defending champions England and to South Africa, the Indian Team has made a mockery of each opposition they crossed paths with in this World Cup 2023. CWC: Jadeja, Kohli star in one-sided affair as India crush South Africa by 243 runs, here's how X reacted

Indian captain Rohit Sharma was a proud man after his team decimated South Africa by 243 runs at the Eden Gardens on Sunday (Nov 5) evening to retain the top spot in the World Cup points table. Sharma said the pitch wasn't easy to bat on despite the start provided by him and the team needed someone like Virat Kohli to bat through.

Speaking at the post-match ceremony, Sharma highlighted the importance of Kohli who smashed his 49th ODI century to equal Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record.

"It wasn't an easy pitch today, you needed someone like Kohli to bat the situation. Not to forget Shreyas Iyer as well, creating that partnership for us and getting the runs on the board," said Sharma.

"We knew we had the runs on the board, it was time to keep the ball in the right areas, which we did," he added.

The Indian skipper also applauded Ravindra Jadeja for his all-round performance with bat and ball. Jadeja played a 15-ball 29-run cameo at the back end of the innings which allowed India to post an above-par total of 326 before turning up with the ball and picking a fifer.

"He's been really good, a big match-winner for us, playing in all three formats for many years now. He keeps doing the job done for us, but goes under the radar, but today was a classic case of what Jadeja is for us."

ODI World Cup 2023: I’m enjoying myself - Virat Kohli opens up after record-equaling ton on 35th birthday

All-rounder Keshav Maharaj is looking at the silver lining after South Africa were humbled by a dominant India during the World Cup match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday (Nov 5).

"It's probably a good thing and a blessing in disguise for this team to make sure that we iron out our glitches. It's just a good eye-opener for us," the spinner said.

Maharaj was of the view that the law of averages had caught up with the Proteas after they had put up a string of consistent performances.

"We played four good games on the bounce, so naturally there's one game that would go wrong, not to make excuses for the performance today, but I think it's a good idea and indication of what we need to do better going forward in this tournament, obviously building up towards that semifinal," Maharaj said.

"It's about making sure that we're practicing in the next couple of games going forward into the semi-final and rectifying it sooner rather than later," he added.

India are manipulating DRS in ODI WC: Ex-Pak player makes another ABSURD claim after hosts thrash SA

India handed South Africa their second and worst defeat in World Cup 2023, beating them by 243 runs at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday night (Nov 5). But the Proteas coach, Rob Walter, believes his team can turn the tables around if they face India again in the knockouts. While admitting to have been outplayed by a dominant Indian Team, Walter remains optimistic of his team finding rhythm leading into the semis.

India batted first, scoring 326 for five in 50 overs, with birthday boy Virat Kohli notching up his 49th ODI hundred – joint-most in the format’s history. Shreyas Iyer also impressed with his successive World Cup fifty, while Ravindra Jadeja’s late blitz with the bat kept India’s nose in front.

Walter insisted that South Africa’s approach will remain the same with only one match remaining (against Afghanistan in Ahmedabad on Friday) in the league stage.

"As far as the next four days go, for us it's about doing what we've done the whole time, using the time available to us to get ready for the next fixture, and then it's into a semi-final. Nothing changes.

"The guys have worked incredibly hard on their game, and we have invested a huge amount of time into our preparation. Now it's about recovering mentally and physically and being ready to compete like we have the whole tournament,” South Africa’s head coach added.

Approach remains same Walter insisted that South Africa’s approach will remain the same with only one match remaining (against Afghanistan in Ahmedabad on Friday) in the league stage.

Don’t be surprised if tables are turned around next time: Walter on SA facing India in World Cup knockouts

India continued their unbelievable run in the home ODI World Cup, with a massive 243-run win over second-positioned South Africa in match 37 on Sunday (Nov 5) at the iconic Eden Gardens in the eastern city of Kolkata. Batting first, India rode on a magnificent start provided by captain Rohit Sharma (40), Shreyas Iyer's 77 and birthday boy Virat Kohli's 101* to post 326 for 5. In reply, Indian pacers and Ravindra Jadeja's five-fer dismissed the Proteas for 83 in 27.1 overs.

After the game, Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar lauded Team India, praising their pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami. The former Pakistan pacer feels the Indian fast bowlers deserve more credit and 'it is time to celebrate them' for their wonderful job in the last few matches.

"Credit goes to the bowlers as they are performing brilliantly. It’s high time that you start regarding Indian pace bowlers as you do it for the batters basically. It’s time to celebrate fast bowling in Indian cricket because they have done a wonderful job in the last three to four matches and they are looking apart,” Akhtar said on his YouTube channel.

Bumrah (15 wickets), Siraj (10) and Shami (16) have assured India of terrific start with the ball in the last three-four games, setting the tone for other bowlers to cash in. As a result, India dismissed England for 129 and Sri Lanka for a paltry 55 before rattling the South Africans on Sunday evening.

During the SA run-chase, the Proteas were reduced to 35-3 due to the pace trio's relentless bowling before Jadeja took over.

ODI WC: High time we celebrate India's fast bowling, says Shoaib Akhtar after hosts' big win vs SA

India romped past South Africa in match 37 of the ODI World Cup at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Sunday (Nov 5). Opting to bat first, Rohit Sharma's quickfire 40, Shreyas Iyer's 77, birthday boy Virat Kohli's 101* and Ravindra Jadeja's 15-ball 24 not out took India to 327 for 5. In reply, the Proteas -- who are the only team apart from India with a confirmed semifinal ticket -- got bundled out for a paltry 83 in 26.1 overs.

With the ball, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami started the onslaught before Jadeja ended with 5 for 33. After yet another clinical win for India, who have now made it eight wins in a row in the ongoing tournament, Shami hilariously trolled the South African side. The Temba Bavuma-led Proteas have been on a run-scoring spree in the mega event -- with three scores in excess of 400 -- but fell flat versus the Indian team.

Unbeaten India equal unique ODI World Cup record after 243-run win over South Africa

Regarded as the best outfielder of modern-day cricket, India’s Ravindra Jadeja has said he does not take anything for granted, especially his fielding.

"Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I don't, but I keep trying all the time."
The star all-rounder had an outing to remember, smashing an unbeaten 29 off 15 balls while batting and returning with figures of five for 33 in nine overs.

Ind vs SA, CWC: 'Yes Virat Kohli is selfish enough to...' - Venkatesh Prasad silences Indian batter's critics

Legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar congratulated Virat Kohli after the latter equalled his record for the most ODI centuries. Tendulkar took to his social media handles to post a congratulatory message for Kohli and urged him to eclipse the record quickly.

Kohli reached his 49th ODI century in front of a boisterous 70,000 Eden Gardens crowd against South Africa in the penultimate league match at the ongoing World Cup.

"Well played Virat. It took me 365 days to go from 49 to 50 earlier this year," posted Tendulkar on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"I hope you go from 49 to 50 and break my record in the next few days. Congratulations!!" he added.

While Tendulkar reached the milestone in 452 innings, Kohli obliterated it by almost half, achieving it in 277 innings.

Notably, over a decade ago, it was Tendulkar who predicted that if there was anyone who could break his records, it would either be Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma.

During a felicitation ceremony hosted by industrialist Mukesh Ambani in 2012, Tendulkar was quizzed if anyone would conquer his 100 international tons record.

"I can see those youngsters. Virat and Rohit are the ones. As long as an Indian breaks it, I don't mind," said Tendulkar at the time.

While Kohli is far from achieving the 100 tons record, he is on the precipice of eclipsing Tendulkar in the ODI format and the prophecy made by the Master Blaster remains true. Kohli is currently on 79 international centuries and if he continues for another couple of years, might be able to achieve the feat as well.

Well played Virat. World Cup 2023: 'I hope you...', Sachin Tendulkar reacts after Virat Kohli equals his ODI centuries record

It was the clash-of-the-table-toppers when India locked horns with South Africa in match 37 of the ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Sunday (Nov 5) at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata. While many expected it to go down to the wire, Rohit Sharma-led India continued their unbeaten streak in the mega event by earning their eighth win on the trot, beating the Proteas by a massive 243-run margin.

Spinners run riot on Kohli-Day

Tasked to chase 327, the Proteas were never in the contest and were bowled out for 83 runs with India on top throughout the game. Jadeja was the star bowler having bagged five wickets after Virat had hogged the spotlight with his 49th ODI hundred which saw him go level with Sachin Tendulkar. South Africa’s batting line-up had no answers to India’s dominance. Only four batters got in double figures for South Africa and Marco Jansen top-scored with 14 on a dull day.

Alongside Jadeja, Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav also ended with two wickets while Mohammed Siraj got the remaining wicket.

Kohli excels with special knock

Earlier, Kohli marked his 35th birthday with a special knock as he equaled Tendulkar’s record for most ODI hundreds at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Having missed out on the ton against New Zealand and Sri Lanka, the former India captain chose his birthday to score his 49th ODI ton which is also his 79th at the international level. The day also saw him become the third-highest scorer in the ODI World Cup history.

India skipper Rohit Sharma (40) and Shubman Gill (23) started on a positive note as they stitched a 62-run stand for the opening wicket. After both openers departed, Virat and Shreyas Iyer took the initiative in their hands to set a perfect platform for a big score. The latter again missed out on a hundred and was dismissed for 77, scalped by Lungi Ngidi.

Later KL Rahul (8) and Suryakumar Yadav (22) joined Virat to help him get the ton. Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten on 29 as India reached the big total of 326/5 in their 50 overs.

World Cup 2023: Virat Kohli marks special day with record-equalling knock, joins Tendulkar for most ODI tons

It required perhaps the ‘ball of the tournament’ thus far from South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj to dismiss India opener Shubman Gill in the ongoing high-octane World Cup clash at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday. With India on top, having scored more than 90 despite losing captain Rohit Sharma, Keshav, in his first over, bowled a jaffa to stun the 60,000-plus crowd and clean bowled Gill.

The unplayable delivery ball, pitched on the middle-leg stump, turned square, removed the bails from the off stump.

Such was the surprising factor that India waited for the replays to confirm the ball did hit the wickets, and it was not Quinton de Kock’s gloved that removed the bails.

Proteas put brakes on India’s innings

Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first at his favourite venue. The Indian openers began blazingly, smashing seamers Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen to all parts of the ground. With the crowd right behind the Indian Team in this top-of-the-table clash, Rohit and Gill opened their arms, with the Indian captain taking the lead.

Making the most of the excellent start, Rohit smashed everyone left, right and centre, and as he got close to yet another fifty in this tournament, he got caught at mid-of off Kagiso Rabada on 40 off 24 balls.

Walked in next was the birthday boy and modern-day game’s greatest batter, Virat Kohli. Alongside Gill, who continued finding gaps, Kohli opened his arms, much to everyone’s cheers. With seamers bowling inside the first ten overs, India managed 91 for one.

Maharaj’s introduction broke the stand

Maharaj was introduced in the 11th over and he soon provided South Africa a big breakthrough as he clean bowled Gill on 23. That, however, came as a boost for South Africa, who, in the next ten overs, conceded just 33 runs, putting brakes on the accelerating Indian innings.

The Indian Captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first in the top-of-the-table clash against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. While the Indian Team will enter the World Cup 2023 contest with the same XI, South African skipper Temba Bavuma announced one change, bringing in Tabraiz Shamsi.

Here are the playing XIs of both teams –

India - Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj

South Africa - Quinton de Kock(w), Temba Bavuma(c), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi

Batting first has more to do with team – Rohit

The crowd erupted into joy after Rohit won the toss at this favourite venue and elected to bat first.

Being the only unbeaten team thus far in this World Cup, Rohit’s call to bat first had more to do with the team doing well than anything else.

Although both teams have qualified for the semis, this match will be for who stays on top in this high-octane game.

“Looks like a good pitch, and honestly, it's more to do with what we want to do as a team. I think it's going to be a good game with two teams at the top of the table. I love playing here, and the Indian team loves playing at this historic ground. We're playing the same team,” Rohit said at the toss.

While the Indian Team will enter the World Cup 2023 contest with the same XI, South African skipper Temba Bavuma announced one change, bringing in Tabraiz Shamsi. Here are the playing XIs of both teams – India - Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj South Africa - Quinton de Kock(w), Temba Bavuma(c), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi Batting first has more to do with team – Rohit The crowd erupted into joy after Rohit won the toss at this favourite venue and elected to bat first. Being the only unbeaten team thus far in this World Cup, Rohit’s call to bat first had more to do with the team doing well than anything else. Although both teams have qualified for the semis, this match will be for who stays on top in this high-octane game. We're playing the same team,” Rohit said at the toss.
