IND vs SA Head-to-head: World Cup 2023-India vs South Africa pitch report, weather update, live streaming

Right then, one month into the World Cup campaign and only two teams have made it out of the league stage so far - India and South Africa. Imposing themselves in the seven-odd games they each have played, the two teams will be locking horns on Sunday (Nov 5) at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata to earn the bragging rights of finishing on top of the points table.

India come into the match as the only unbeaten side of the tournament while South Africa only have an aberration of a defeat against the Netherlands on their otherwise, glowing CV. While India have played an all-round game through the World Cup, South Africa have majorly relied on outmuscling the opponents in the first half of the game by batting first and putting mountainous targets.

That's not to say the bowling had underfired for the Proteas. Marco Jansen has been breathing fire in the powerplay overs while Lungi Ngidi, Gerald Coetzee and Keshav Maharaj have provided adequate help in the middle overs.

As for the 2011 World Cup champions, with Hardik Pandya out of the tournament, they will be forced to revert to their six-batters and five-bowlers formula, which, up until now, has served them well. The batting will rely on captain Rohit Sharma to provide the early impetus with Virat Kohli aiming to go big on what would be his 35th birthday.

Result prediction:

Predicting a top-of-the-table clash is never an easy proposition but given the way the Indian side has gone about its business in the tournament so far, it wouldn't be a wild call to assume that the hosts have the advantage.

What did the teams say?

Quizzed about the lack of a sixth bowling option on the eve of the match, Indian head coach Rahul Dravid had a tongue-in-cheek reply, suggesting that Virat Kohli will be up to roll his arms if the situation demands.

"Yes, we don't have the sixth bowling option but we have a wrong-footed inswinger menace whom we can back for a few overs," said Dravid.

"He was close to bowling in the last game with the crowd pushing him to do so. The response of the team and the players has been really good," he added.

Indian men's cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid has joked about the lack of a sixth bowling option in the squad by stating that Virat Kohli with his 'wong-footed' bowling action could fill in the gap.

Speaking to reporters on the eve of the World Cup match against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Dravid made the 'tongue-in-cheek' remark.

India have been rendered without a sixth bowling option after all-rounder Hardik Pandya was ruled out of the tournament due to an ankle injury. The management announced Pandya's absence on Saturday (Nov 4) stating that Prasidh Krishna had been named as his replacement.

In Pandya's absence, India brought in pacer Mohammed Shami to bolster the bowling attack and replaced bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur with Suryakumar Yadav to balance the batting. The changes have been exceptional for India as Shami took 14 wickets in three matches with two five-fors.

India, meanwhile, are on the top of the points table with seven wins in seven games, becoming the first team to qualify for the semis.

World Cup 2023: Coach Rahul Dravid jokes about Virat Kohli being the 'menacing' 6th bowling option

India have been on a roll in the ongoing home ODI World Cup. After six games, they remain the only unbeaten team with a win in each outing and are sitting at the top of the points table of the ten-team competition. Batters and bowlers have been very clinical whereas they have been delivering as a fielding unit as well.

While captain Rohit Sharma remains India's highest run-getter (398) -- fourth-most overall -- Virat Kohli is also not behind. Kohli is at the sixth spot in terms of most runs in the tournament (354 runs, including a ton) and is one century away from equalling Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar's ODI tally (49 -- most-ever). Thus, Indian fans are eagerly waiting for him to score his 49th and also register his 50th ton during the mega event.

Ahead of Pakistan's clash versus Bangladesh, in match 31 in Kolkata on Tuesday (Oct 31), Mohammed Rizwan expressed hope that Kohli would score his 49th ODI ton on his birthday, when India take on South Africa in Kolkata on Nov 5 (Sunday), and also that the star batter will slam his 50th century during the marquee event.

Rizwan said while talking to India Today, "It is nice to know that his birthday is on 5th of November. Wish him all the best and a happy birthday, though I don't celebrate mine and I don't believe in that. Wishing a great one to Virat. I hope he can get his 49th ODI hundred on his birthday. And I wish him that He could also get his 50th ODI century in this World Cup."

ODI World Cup: Hope Virat Kohli scores 49th ODI ton on his birthday, says Pakistan's Md Rizwan

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar feels Virat Kohli will score his 50th ODI ton during India's forthcoming World Cup clash versus South Africa on Nov 5, when Kohli will turn 35. The former Indian captain has been in top form in the ongoing ten-team tournament in India, with 354 runs in five games (most by an Indian, second-most overall).

He has had scores of 85, 55*, 16, 103* and 95. After his ton versus Bangladesh in Pune on Oct 19, Kohli reached his 48th ODI ton and is only one away from equaling Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar's century tally (49); most by a batter in the 50-over format.

Gavaskar has, thus, made a bold claim that Kohli's merry run will continue and he will soon score the 50th ODI hundred, going past Tendulkar's tally.

Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, "Kohli will slam his 50th ODI Century against South Africa at the Eden Gardens and what better occasion than his birthday? It's a sight when you slam a ton there because the Kolkata crowd gives you a standing ovation, and cheers for you, the air is filled with whistles and claps. It is a moment to savour for every batter."

At present, the Kohli-starrer Indian team has reached Lucknow for their upcoming game versus England on Sunday (Oct 29).

The Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue have been in top form with five back-to-back wins and remain the only unbeaten side in the mega event. India will hope for their dream run to continue and for Kohli to also reach his 49th century soon and got to his 50th ton during the SA encounter in Kolkata.

In India's last game, they took on New Zealand in Dharamsala on Oct 22.

Opting to bowl first, India dismissed the Kiwis for 273 -- courtesy of Mohammed Shami's 5 for 54 -- and chased down the score in 48 overs with Kohli top scoring with a fine 95.

He missed out on his 49th century by a whisker and will be eager to get there in the upcoming games and then aim for a historic 50th ODI ton.

It's a sight when you slam a ton there because the Kolkata crowd gives you a standing ovation, and cheers for you, the air is filled with whistles and claps. It is a moment to savour for every batter." The Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue have been in top form with five back-to-back wins and remain the only unbeaten side in the mega event.

South Africa took the field, without regular Temba Bavuma, versus Bangladesh in match 23 of the ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Tuesday (Oct 24) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Proteas continued their winning run with another big win, beating the Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangla Tigers by 149 runs. With this, they are now in the second spot after hosts India.

Seeing South Africa's dominance in the ten-team tournament, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra feels Kolkata could witness the best game of the tournament when India face Bavuma & Co. on Nov 5 (Sunday). Here is what he tweeted:

Chopra wrote, "South Africa is a beast while batting first. India are the best chasers in this tournament. Kolkata could witness the best game of the tournament if both teams decide to stick to their guns and choose accordingly. 5th November. Eden Gardens. #CWC23".

Talking about SA's win over Bangladesh, they rode on Quinton de Kock's mammoth 174 to post a staggering 382 for 5 after opting to bat first. In reply, they dismissed the Asian side for 233 in 46.4 overs -- with Mahmudullah (111) being the sole warrior -- as pacer Gerald Coetzee took a three-fer.

SA have been in roaring form with four big wins and only one loss, which came against the Netherlands. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma-led India are on a roll as well and remain the only unbeaten side in the competition after five wins on the trot (beating Australia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand, respectively). Thus, India versus South Africa is expected to be a humdinger of a clash at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata in the first week of Nov.

India vs South Africa could be best game of ODI World Cup 2023, feels former Indian opener

From colossal failure in SA to WI T20I series loss: Team India's shocking LOWS in Rahul Dravid's tenure

The ODI World Cup is set to be held in India later this year. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is busy in preparations while also conducting the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition in the country. While it is being reported that the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad can host the India-Pakistan clash, it is noted that Team India have also asked for spin-friendly venues for some big games in the league stage.

As per a report in the Indian Express, Team India has asked for spin-friendly venues for their World Cup games versus Australia, England, New Zealand, and South Africa.

Spin-to-win mantra for Rohit Sharma-led Team India?

“The Indian team has performed well on slow tracks in the past few years at home. So the team management had requested that whenever the schedule is being prepared the Indian team should face top teams on slow pitches. They wanted to have a home advantage,” a source in the BCCI said.

It is believed, as per the same report, that the BCCI will be announcing the forthcoming ODI World Cup schedule at a grand launch following the conclusion of IPL 2023.

This will be the first time that India will host the 50-over showpiece event entirely on its own. In 2011, India co-hosted the mega event, along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, and won the championship after 28 years. In the following two editions, the Men in Blue bowed out in the semi-finals.

IND-W vs SA-W Live streaming: Team India-women will square off with South Africa-women team in the IND-W vs SA-W vs WI-W tri-series final match on Thursday, February 2. The toss took place at 6:00 PM IST. Team India has won the toss and decided to bat first. The encounter against the West Indies, which India won by 8 wickets, not only offered Team India some game time after a washout against South Africa but also some confidence moving into the final and then the T20 World Cup. Team India had already secured its spot in the Women's T20I tri-series final. The final presents the Women in Blue with the chance to play their finest game so far in the series and gain some confidence going into the T20 World Cup after having played in the South African conditions. The Proteas, on the other hand, struggled in their two matches against the strong Indian side but performed well against West Indies. Dane van Niekerk's exclusion from the T20 World Cup will undoubtedly disappoint the entire South African team, but they must set their feelings aside since Thursday's final will be their chance to exact retribution on the Women in Blue. India`s Suryakumar Yadav has grabbed the top position for batters in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men's T20I Player Rankings after smashing two half-centuries over the past week in the Men's T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Yadav's 51 not out off 25 balls against the Netherlands in Sydney and a valiant 68 off 40 against South Africa in Perth have helped him overtake New Zealand's Devon Conway and Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan. They had held the top spot since 4 September this year.

Yadav is the 23rd player to top the T20I batting rankings and only the second Indian to reach No. 1 in T20 cricket after Virat Kohli, who spent 1,013 days at the top in different periods from September 2014 to December 2017. Yadav's tally of 863 rating points is also the second-best by an Indian, the highest being Kohli's tally of 897 in September 2014.New Zealand`s Glenn Phillips has moved up five slots to reach a career-best seventh position after scores of 104 against Sri Lanka and 62 against England, while South Africa's Rilee Rossouw is another one to enter the top 10 after scoring 109 against Bangladesh, moving up 17 slots to a career-best eighth position.

South Africa fast bowler Lungi Ngidi`s Player of the Match effort of four for 29 against India has lifted him 11 places to join 28th with India`s Axar Patel.

ICC T20I Rankings: Suryakumar Yadav becomes No. 1 batter, ends Pakistan opener Md Rizwan's reign

After India's loss to South Africa in their Super 12 clash in the T20 World Cup, in Australia, a huge controversy broke out. A housekeeping staff member at the Crown in Perth shared a video of Virat Kohli's room and shared it on social media. This led the former Indian captain fuming and has prompted reactions from many in the cricketing fraternity.

In the run-up to India's face-off versus Bangladesh, at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide on Wednesday (November 02), former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar also joined in and shared his take on the matter, criticising the staff's behaviour.

"Definitely yes. Today, with these phone cameras, there is a very thin line between your privacy and where you are in the public domain. Sometimes you are sitting in the car as well, going to a match or maybe not going to a match, and when a camera is inside and trying to take you. Is that an invasion of privacy? I don't know," Gavaskar told India Today in an exclusive interview.

"But I think in your hotel room? Yes 100 percent, you need that privacy. Nobody should be doing what was done. I didn't see the video but I heard about it and I think it is simply not done," the Little Master added.

While resharing the video posted by the hotel staff, Kohli wrote on Instagram, "I understand that fans get very happy and excited seeing their favourite players and get excited to meet them and I’ve always appreciated that."

"But this video here is appalling and it’s made me feel very paranoid about my privacy. If I cannot have privacy in my own hotel room, then where can I really expect any personal space at all?? I’m NOT okay with this kind of fanaticism and absolute invasion of privacy. Please respect people’s privacy and not treat them as a commodity for entertainment," the 33-year-old added.

Following Kohli's revelation, the Crown Resorts, where the Indian team stayed in Perth, stated, "The safety and privacy of our guests is our number one priority, and we are incredibly disappointed this incident has occurred. We unreservedly apologise to the guest involved and will continue to take the necessary steps to ensure this remains an isolated incident."

"We have zero tolerance for this behaviour, and it falls well below the standards we set for our team members and contractors. Crown has taken immediate steps to rectify the issue. The individuals involved have been stood down and removed from the Crown account, and the original video was swiftly removed from the social media platform," it added.

"Crown is conducting an investigation with the third-party contractor and will take any further steps necessary to ensure an incident of this nature does not happen again. We are also co-operating with the Indian Cricket team and the International Cricket Council to convey our apologies and will continue to work with them as we progress the investigation," the statement added.

Ahead of India's crucial Super 12 clash versus Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup, head coach Rahul Dravid reacted to BCCI chief selector Chetan Sharma's recent remark, where he claimed that Team India will win the mega event in Australia.

To this, Sharma said, "Tournament k andar selection committee ko koi comment nahi karna chahie. After the World Cup, when we sit and discuss, I will definitely comment on that. It will be wrong for me to say anything in the middle of the tournament. I'm with the team. I'm watching. We are performing brilliantly and we will win the World Cup."

WATCH: Rahul Dravid in splits after hearing chief selector Chetan Sharma's 'India will win T20 WC' remark

The legendary Sunil Gavaskar believes not playing smart cricket cost India their Super 12 clash against South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 30). India lost a low-scoring thriller against the Proteas by five wickets in Perth after failing to defend a total of 133 runs.

While India's batting line-up crumbled on a tricky wicket in Perth, their fielding also failed to impress with several missed opportunities during South Africa's run-chase. Virat Kohli dropped a sitter to hand Aiden Markram a reprieve before captain Rohit Sharma missed an easy run-out chance.

Despite getting off to a brilliant start with the ball, India failed to capitalise as Markram and David Miller slammed half-centuries apiece to take South Africa home. Gavaskar insisted fielding was not the major reason behind India's loss as he pointed out at the lack of smart cricket by the Men in Blue.

"I think, in cricket, you are going to have situations where catches are going to be dropped, run-out opportunities missed. What you really going to see is that we didn't score enough runs. On a pitch like this where there is going to be a little bit of a challenge for battes, I think you have got to play it smartly. I don't think we played smart enough cricket because if you had played smart cricket, we would have had a 150 on the board," Gavaskar was quoted as saying by India Today.

Gavaskar highlighted how the likes of Deepak Hooda and Dinesh Karthik could have played smartly and tried to settle down in the middle instead of trying to play a big shot early on. While Hooda was dismissed on a duck off just three balls, Karthik got dismissed on 6 off 15 balls trying to take on the bowler.

Their dismissal put extra pressure on Suryakumar Yadav, who was the lone saviour for India after Lungi Ngidi ran through the team's top order. Ngidi picked up a four-wicket haul to ensure the likes of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli among others were all sent back cheaply. Suryakumar played a fantastic knock of 68 runs to help India post a fighting total of 133 runs on the board.

"I have been stressing about playing an extra batter but Deepak Hooda tried to attack in his 3rd delivery when he had Suryakumar Yadav at the other end. He had to play smart cricket," said Gavaskar.

"Similarly, I think, Karthik getting out at that stage. I am not blaming them, I am saying generally saying that apart from Suryakumar Yadav, nobody played the kind of cricket with the experience that they had that would have helped us get those 15-20 runs more," he added.

However, the former India captain insisted there is no need for India to press the panic button yet in the T20 World Cup as they are comfortably placed to qualify for the semi-finals with 4 points after three matches. India have to play Bangladesh and Zimbabwe next and will hope to win both games to ensure they can have a smooth qualification.

"Yes, let's not press the panic button at all. We have 4 points and 2 matches to go. 2 matches against opponents we should be able to win. You should never taken any team lightly, Bangladesh have given us a run for the money in T20Is. So we have to be careful against them, even Zimbabwe, the way they have played in this World Cup, we have to be careful," said Gavaskar.

Also Read: Virat Kohli furious after invasion of privacy in hotel room, says 'I am not okay with this kind of fanaticism' Gavaskar highlighted how the likes of Deepak Hooda and Dinesh Karthik could have played smartly and tried to settle down in the middle instead of trying to play a big shot early on. Also Read: Rohit Sharma rues missed chances against South Africa, says 'we were just not good enough' However, the former India captain insisted there is no need for India to press the panic button yet in the T20 World Cup as they are comfortably placed to qualify for the semi-finals with 4 points after three matches.

'Let's not press the panic button': Sunil Gavaskar after India's loss against South Africa in T20 World Cup

After Lungi Ngidi's 4 for 29, fifties from Aiden Markram (52) and David Miller (59 not out) propelled Temba Bavuma-led South Africa to a thrilling five-wicket win over India in a crucial Super 12 clash at the Men's T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 30) in Perth. Playing at the Perth Stadium, Rohit Sharma-led India opted to bat first and rode on Suryakumar Yadav's brilliant 44-ball 68 to post 133 for 9, after reeling at 60 for 5 in ten overs, but fell behind despite a fight from their bowlers.

Markram and Miller got together with SA being reduced to 24 for 3 in a tricky run-chase, on a surface with plenty of assistance for the pacers. Nonetheless, Markam counterattacked and Miller chose his bowlers smartly and went for the timely big hits to remain unbeaten and take his side past the finish line. The swashbuckling left-hander has been in sensational form in 2022, finishing run-chases in style on a consistent basis. Former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja lauded Miller and mentioned the MS Dhoni factor behind his rise as an able finisher.

"What David Miller has done with his game and taken it to another level is not by adding any shots or adding anything else. He's become calmer and waits for the opposition to make a mistake by taking the game deep. The lesson that MS Dhoni has taught the rest of the world, we are suffering because of that," Jadeja said in an interaction with Cricbuzz.

Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in August 2020, was known for his finishing skills apart from his smart reflexes, big-hitting prowess and shrewd captaincy at the international levels. He will next be seen in IPL 2023, leading the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir lashed out at Indian wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik after his flop show against South Africa in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday. Indis suffered a five-wicket defeat in the low-scoring thriller in Perth as their unbeaten streak in the tournament came to an end.

It was a disappointing batting performance from the Indian team as Suryakmar Yadav single-handedly propelled the team to a fighting total of 133 runs after a disastrous start. While the likes of KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli failed to deliver, the middle-order too was non-existent for India against a quality Proteas pace attack.

Suryakumar slammed a brilliant knock of 68 runs off just 40 balls but failed to find support from the other end. India were reeling at 49/5 at one stage in their innings when Suryakumar joined hands with Dinesh Karthik to steady the ship with a 52-run stand for the sixth wicket.

However, Karthik, who managed only 6 runs off 15 balls failed to deliver and got out trying to play a big shot at the wrong time. Karthik has been backed by the team management as the designated finisher and first-choice keeper batter ahead of Rishabh Pant, however, he has failed to live up to the expectations.

Gambhir lashed out at the veteran wicket-keeper batter after his poor show against South Africa and said he lacks clarity when asked to play with 7-8 overs remaining and is only good for death overs.

"What is Dinesh Karthik's problem? If he gets a lot of balls to face, he is not able to figure out the tempo at which he has to bat. If he gets just 10-`12 balls, then there is clarity in his mind. He is then able to take on the bowlers. If there are 7-8 overs remaining, then he doesn't have clarity over whether he should rotate the strike or block," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

The former India opener also slammed the 37-year-old for failing to rotate the strike during his partnership with Suryakumar against South Africa on Sunday and said he was neither able to steal singles nor hit proper shots during his innings.

"With the experience that Dinesh Karthik has, it's important that he figures out the tempo and the time to attack. He can attack any bowler, he has all the shots in the book. He is a finisher too. But there are situations when your team is 5 down in the first 10 overs, then does he have the temperament to bat accordingly and build a partnership, go at run-a-ball and give yourself a chance to attack the bowlers at the death. He got out at the wrong time. But even if you had looked at him before that, he didn't look confident during that knock. He didn't have any tempo to his batting. Neither did he rotate the strike nor did he play confident shots," added Gambhir.

Karthik picked up an injury while keeping wickets in the game against the Proteas and is likely to miss India's next Super 12 clash against Bangladesh. Pant can be his direct replacement in the playing if he misses out.

For the ODIs, Shikhar Dhawan will continue to lead India in the shorter format -- after the SA series at home in early October -- with Pant retaining the vice-captain's position. Hardik won't be part of the series whereas the majority of the players who featured in the SA ODIs have retained their spots (such as Gill, Iyer, Samson, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Shahbaz Ahmed, Kuldeep Yadav). It will also see the return of Deepak Chahar, who was ruled out of the T20 WC due to back issues.

Talking of India's two Tests and three ODIs versus hosts Bangladesh, it will see the return of regulars such as Rohit, Kohli, KL, etc. There are some notable additions in the ODI line-up, with the inclusion of Rajat Patidar, Rahul Tripathi, and Yash Dayal whereas Ravindra Jadeja will also mark his return. In the Test line-up, KS Bharat will be the second keeper, with Pant now being the preferred choice for quite some time, whereas Shardul has also been drafted to the squad.

T20 World Cup 2022 points table: A look at Super 12 standings after India's loss against South Africa

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma expressed regret over the missed chances during the T20 World Cup match against South Africa on Sunday (October 30) at Perth Stadium, thanks to half-centuries from David Miller and Aiden Markram.

A crucial 76-run partnership between Miller (59 not out) and Markram (52) led the team to achieve the set target with two balls to spare after the South African bowlers had held India to 133-9.

During the match, India made mistakes on the field as well. Markram survived a scare at 35 when a fumbling Virat Kohli dropped an easy catch at deep mid-wicket. Rohit, who said that the team was "just not good enough", also missed an underarm direct hit at the striker's end.

During the post-match presentation, Rohit said, "We were a little poor in the field, we gave so many chances and we weren't clinical. We were just not good enough."

"The last two games, we were pretty good in the field. We couldn't hold our chances, we missed a few run-outs. We need to keep our heads high and take learning from this game," the Indian skipper added.

South Africa's bowlers took charge, headed by Lungi Ngidi's 4/29. They were effective with their speed and short balls to restrict India to 49/5 in 8.3 overs. After that, Suryakumar Yadav rose to the occasion to score a counterattacking 68 off 40 balls, and he and Dinesh Karthik shared a stand of 52 runs for the sixth wicket as India posted a respectable 133/9 in 20 overs.

Rohit said, "We expected the pitch to have something in it, with the weather around. We knew there will be help for the seamers. Which is why you saw that 130 was not an easy chase. We fell a little short with the bat. I thought we fought well till the end but South Africa played well in the end."

While chasing, South Africa were reduced to 24/3 in 5.4 overs as Indian bowlers used fuller length and some swing, but South Africa shift the gears to complete the chase.

"The pitch is such that the wicket can come any time for the seamers. When you see that score (40/3 in 10), you`ll always think you`re in the game. It was a match-winning partnership from Miller and Markram," added Rohit.

Rohit concluded by noting that because spinners were being destroyed in the penultimate over of the innings, he wanted to finish Ravichandran Ashwin's overs before the final two overs arrived.

We were just not good enough." "The last two games, we were pretty good in the field. We couldn't hold our chances, we missed a few run-outs. We need to keep our heads high and take learning from this game," the Indian skipper added. T20 WC: Rohit Sharma rues missed chances against South Africa, says 'we were just not good enough'

David Miller and Aiden Markram combined to steer South Africa home in a tricky run-chase as the Proteas defeated India by five wickets in the T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 28). It was a low-scoring thriller between the two sides in Perth as South Africa managed to come out on top after holding their nerves towards the end.

After an excellent effort with the ball to stop India on a paltry 133, South Africa found themselves in troubled waters early in their run chase as Indian bowlers gave the Proteas a taste of their own medicine with the ball.

Arshdeep Singh continued his fine form with the new ball as he struck twice in his very first over to get rid of Quinton de Kock on just one off 3 balls and Rilee Rossouw on a duck.

South African skipper Temba Bavuma too couldn't trouble the scorers much and departed for just 10 off 15 balls as his men were left reeling on 24/3 inside the Powerplay. However, Markram and Miller combined to post a match-winning 76-run stand for the fourth wicket as they helped South Africa stage a comeback in the contest.

While Markram took charge in the middle overs after the run rate started slipping away from South Africa's reach, it was Miller, who finished off the proceedings in style after his dismissal. Markram slammed a crucial 52 off 41 deliveries while Miller played an important knock of unbeaten 59 to steer his team over the line.

Suryakumar Yadav played a terrific knock of 40-ball 68 but his superlative effort went in vain as South Africa managed to hand India their first defeat in the tournament. It was an excellent bowling effort from the Proteas, who rode on an exceptional spell from Lungi Ngidi to restrict India to a low-key total.

Ngidi was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa as he ran through India's top-order to finish with brilliant figures of 4/29 in his four overs and was awarded the Man of the Match for his bowling heroics. Ngidi was well supported by Wayne Parnell, who picked up three wickets while conceding only 15 runs off his four overs.

On a day when the rest of the Indian batting line-up struggled massively in Perth, Suryakumar proved why he is one of the best T20 batters in the world at present with a memorable knock albiet in a losing cause.

The loss brought an end to India's winning streak in the tournament as South Africa grabbed the top spot in Group 2 with five points from three matches so far. India are at the second spot with four points and are still comfortably placed to secure a spot in the semi-finals with two games in hands.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) × Suryakumar Yadav played a terrific knock of 40-ball 68 but his superlative effort went in vain as South Africa managed to hand India their first defeat in the tournament. The loss brought an end to India's winning streak in the tournament as South Africa grabbed the top spot in Group 2 with five points from three matches so far. India are at the second spot with four points and are still comfortably placed to secure a spot in the semi-finals with two games in hands. T20 World Cup: Miller, Ngidi help South Africa beat India by 5 wickets to claim top spot in Group 2

Suryakumar Yadav played a brilliant knock of 68 runs off 40 balls as he turned out to be India's saviour in their Super 12 clash against South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 30). On a day when the Indian batter struggles against the quality Proteas pace attack, Suryakumar continued his red-hot form with the bat.

Opting to bat first, India got off to a woeful start as they lost wickets in quick succession at the top to be left reeing at 49/5 in no time. With half the side back to the dugout, Suryakumar combined with Dinesh Karthik to steady the ship for the Men in Blue as the duo added 52 runs for the sixth wicket.

However, 46 out of those 52 runs were scored by Suryakumar, who single-handedly helped India post a sighting total of 133 runs on the board. En route to his half-century, the star India batter became only the third player to score over 900 runs in T20Is in a calendar year to join Pakistan's Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan in the elite list.

Rizwan tops the charts when it comes to most runs by a batter in T20Is in a calendar year as he scored 1326 runs in 29 matches last year, including 12 fifties. Babar had amassed 939 runs in 29 matches last year with the help of nine fifties. They are now joined by Suryakumar in the list of batters who have completed 900 runs in a calendar year in the shortest format.

Suryakumar has so far scored 935 runs in 26 matches this year at an average of over 42 and a stunning strike rate of 183.69, including eight half-centuries. Earlier this year, he had broken Virat Kohli's record for most runs by an Indian batter in a calendar year in T20Is.

Suryakumar didn't have an ideal start in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 as he had failed to get going in the opener against Pakistan. However, the star batter bounced back with a quickfire 25-ball 51 against Netherlands and followed it up with another half-century against the Proteas on Sunday.

Suryakumar Yadav joins Babar, Rizwan in elite list after brilliant 68-run knock against South Africa in T20 WC

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir was left surprised by the Indian team's decision to drop all-rounder Axar Patel for Deepak Hooda in the playing for their clash against South Africa in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 30). After failing to make the cut in the playing XI for India's first two Super 12 matches, Hooda finally made his T20 World Cup debut on Sunday.

Binging in Hooda for Axar was the only change India made in their playing XI from their last win against Netherlands. Gambhir failed to understand the logic behind the selection and asked where did India plan to play Hooda. He also argued if Hooda can be relied upon as India's sixth bowler.

"Ya, it was quite surprising for me. Why would you want to go with a batter when something is working for you. I know Axar has not bowled a lot, but he has bowled four overs in the previous game. India has gone with only 5 main bowlers and Hooda is your sixth bowler. Probably the reason could be that South Africa have a couple of left-handers in their ranks, that is the only reason I can think of," Gambhir said on Star Sports ahead of the start of the game.

Hooda, who made his T20 debut for India earlier this year, showcased exceptional form with the bat to earn a spot in the team's squad for the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022. However, he had to wait for his chance as India went with Axar as their second all-rounder alongside Hardik Pandya.

While he has been consistent in the anchor's role in the middle and the top order, Gambhir felt India could have gone with a striker of the ball lower down the order instead of playing Hooda. However, he insisted the fact that South Africa have a couple of left-handers in their batting line-up might have prompted the Indian team to select Hooda, who can be a handy leg-spinner.

"But where you are going to play him? Are you going to play him at number 7? He is not someone who can bat at number 7. It is good to depth in your batting, there is nothing wrong in it, but it depends on who you are getting. If the batter is suited for the position, that also matters. And we will have to wait and watch how India fare with a less strong bowling line-up," Gambhir added.

Hooda's selection didn't work out for India as he was dismissed on a duck after coming out to bat at number five against the Proteas on Sunday. On a day when the entire India batting line-up struggled on a tricky wicket in Perth, it was Suryakumar Yadav who turned out to be the team's saviour.

'Quite surprising': Gautam Gambhir questions Deepak Hooda's selection in T20 WC clash against South Africa

Virat Kohli will be on the cusp of achieving an elusive T20 World Cup record when India lock horns with South Africa in their third Super 12 clash in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 30). Kohli has been in terrific form so far in the tournament and has played an instrumental role in India's back-to-back wins in their first two matches.

Kohli has been enjoying a purple patch with the willow as he has already scored half-centuries in India's first two matches. The batting maestro played a stunning knock of unbeaten 82 to help India earn a thrilling four-wicket win against Pakistan before scoring 62 off 44 balls against Netherlands in India's last outing.

Kohli is now on the cusp of breaking an elusive T20 World Cup record in the upcoming clash against South Africa at the Perth Stadium in Perth. He is just 28 runs short of surpassing Sri Lanka legend Mahela Jayawardene to become the leading run-getter in the history of the T20 World Cup.

Virat Kohli on cusp of breaking elusive T20 World Cup record in India's clash against South Africa

Former India captain Kapil Dev has urged the Indian team management to play Rishabh Pant over Dinesh Karthik in the Men in Blue's clash against South Africa in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 30). India have gotten off to a flying start in the tournament with two wins in their first two games and will be hoping to maintain their winning streak in the third Super 12 clash against the Proteas.

Karthik has been India's first-choice wicket-keeper batter so far in the tournament but hasn't got too many chances to impress as he bats in the lower-middle order as the team's designated finisher. While he hasn't batted enough, he hasn't been flawless while keeping wickets.

Speaking ahead of the crucial clash against South Africa, Kapil India should look at playing Pant as he will provide a left-hand option in the middle order and his wicket-keeping can be like a breath of fresh air for the team making it look complete.

"I want to say that since we have Rishabh Pant, now is the time India need him. It felt as if Dinesh Karthik would get the job done, but factoring in the wicketkeeping as well, I feel that if India have that left-hander option in the team, this team would look complete," Kapil said on ABP News.

Kapil also backed struggling KL Rahul to find his form soon in the ongoing tournament. Rahul has looked completely out of touch in the first two games and has managed only 13 runs so far. The former India captain said Rahul needs to be patient at the top and take his time initially as he has the skills to accelerate when needed.

"He is a very neat cricketer. If you look at his batting, he doesn't appear to be struggling. He gets out and has in fact, played on twice or thrice. I want him to score runs because it is really important for him to score. Some players are told not to play fast. He can take time initially because he can easily accelerate as and when needed. I want him to play patiently, play the first 8-10 overs, and then when he gets an idea what total is best on the pitch, then go for it," said Kapil.

Team would look complete: Kapil Dev urges India to play Rishabh Pant over Dinesh Karthik vs South Africa

At 37, Dinesh Karthik could well be playing his last ICC tournament, having been a part of global event squad for the first time back in 2007. At 25, Rishabh Pant has years of top-flight cricket left in him. He batted from start to finish during the nets but a place in the playing eleven still looks like a distant reality.

Both are at different stages of their lives -- Karthik doing some special 'blind drills' so that people don't criticise his keeping in what could be his last big tournament.

While gathering a powerful throw, he seemed to be in pain and took off his main gloves and looked at his 'inners'.
In case of Pant, there was passion and anger of a youth in his batting session as Rahul Dravid spent the maximum time looking at his batting.

At times he treated Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj with utter disdain. At other times, he played and missed but didn't leave the nets.

On one of the coldest days in Perth, the focus of India's net session was Karthik's unique keeping drills under supervision of fielding coach T Dilip.

Blind Drill is a specific keeping exercise done to increase alertness as keepers get blindsided by batters when the ball comes to them at last the moment.

Dilip kept a couple of red and white markers at least four feet apart and put a white towel on them. As Karthik crouched behind the imaginary stumps, Dilip from the other kept an inclined plane used for giving sharp catches and hit the balls between the two road markers and in a manner that it gets deflected by the towel.

The towel is like a batter, who is covering the ball, and even if he misses it, the keeper would get a sight of the delivery at the last moment. This training is specially done to get the reflexes in order if someone like an Axar Patel, who bowls his deliveries at a quicker pace beats the bat.

Karthik had missed an easy stumping chance against the Netherlands as could watch the ball only when it had come near him at the last moment. The drill has two-fold benefits - it helps in making the reflexes quick and improves footwork.

The second set of the drill was with the big kit bag after removing the marker. Now Dilip was hurling the ball down the leg-side and a crouched Karthik needed deft footwork even if he is wrong-footed and gather the wide leg-side balls when bowlers lose their line.

Later, Karthik practiced catches off awkward edges. Here, the team used a special rubber bat with rough and rugged edges. The moment the ball hits those rugged cuts, it could fly in any direction - inside edge, outside edge, lob on-front, or just nosedive.

It was mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton, who batted left-handed during the drills. In fact coach Rahul Dravid had instructed net bowlers (spinners) to bowl fast and quick into the stumps when Karthik was keeping.

"We got an instruction from Indian coaches to flight it less and bowl fast and keep it within stumps without much turn for Karthik to keep. We are not used to bowling this quick in Grade cricket but it was good fun," said one of the net bowlers Khilesh.

As Karthik did his drills, Pant batted and batted at the other nets. One could gauge he is hurting. You are not a champion player if you are not hurt by snub.

After the two-hour session, when everyone thought he was packing his kits, he took out his keeping gear and asked Nuwan Senaviratne to give him throwdowns for another 15 minutes.

It seemed he didn't want to leave the Optus Stadium even if the temperature was around 10-12 degrees.
He obliged the selfie hunters as well as the journalists. Shook hands with familiar faces and exchanged pleasantries. But it was clear, he was hurt at being left out of playing XI.

"Rishabh bhai open kaarlo, India ki zindaagi badal jayegi," a fan shouted from the other side of the fence. Rishabh looked back and started walking.

Even he wants to open but is the team management listening.

The chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma was present during the optional training session but quietly watched proceedings from a distance. Unlike some of the series after he had become the coach, Sharma wasn't seen voluntarily entering the nets or talking to the bowlers.

Rather he chose a safe distance behind the fast bowler's bowling mark and watched coaches Rahul Dravid, Paras Mhambrey and Vikram Rathour monitor the session. Once the practice was over, he was seen sharing a laugh with Karthik as they walked back.

Also Read: Virat Kohli is the best in this era, he cannot be compared, says former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir Dilip kept a couple of red and white markers at least four feet apart and put a white towel on them.

T20 WC: Dinesh Karthik does 'blind' drills, Rishabh Pant bats like man possessed ahead of South Africa clash

India left for Australia early this month for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Rohit Sharma & Co. have had a stellar run in the shortest format in this year and, hence, are one of the title contenders for the marquee edition Down Under. In the last edition, held in 2021 in the UAE, India faltered under pressure and failed to get past the Super 12 round after back-to-back losses in their opening two games, versus Pakistan and New Zealand, respectively.

Thus, India will be keen to turn the tides this time around. They have a strong squad -- compromising Rohit, vice-captain KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, in-form Suryakumar Yadav, Bhuvnneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya, etc. -- and will be desperate to click from the word go. So far, India have won the T20 WC title only once, during the 2007 edition under MS Dhoni, and since then, they managed to reach the top four only twice (with them ending as runners-up in 2014). Will India return with the elusive title? Only time will tell...

Team India at T20 World Cup 2022: Squad, schedule, timings - Everything you need to know

Shikhar Dhawan-led India demolished South Africa in the third and final ODI, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, on Tuesday evening (October 11). After levelling the series with an impressive seven-wicket win in the second and penultimate ODI, Dhawan & Co. locked horns with the Proteas with all to play for both the sides.

Opting to bowl first, India bundled out the David Miller-led SA for a paltry 99 in 27.1 overs, their fourth-lowest ODI score (lowest versus the Men in Blue). After Md Siraj-Washington Sundar's early strikes, and an economical spell from Avesh Khan, Kuldeep Yadav joined in and wreaked havoc by returning with match figures of 4.1-0-18-4. The wily spinner, who also accounted for 22 wickets in IPL 2022 (fifth overall), has had a good run in 2022. After his superlative performance versus South Africa in the ODI series decider, questions were raised as to why the 27-year-old isn't part of the Rohit Sharma-led India's T20 World Cup squad.

Nonetheless, Kuldeep isn't disappointed. In the post-match press conference, he said, "I am not disappointed about missing out on the World Cup because I am more focussed on the process. I am seeing how I can improve match by match. I am not disappointed as the ones who were selected are among the best."

On being asked whether he misses his partnership with Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep revealed, "It's a tricky question. He is in Australia for the T20 World Cup and my best wishes are with him. Hope he performs well and I keep performing in ODIs."

Kuldeep-starrer India beat SA by seven wickets by chasing down a paltry 100-run target in 19.1 overs. Shubhman Gill led the charge with the bat, with an impressive 57-ball 49, before Shreyas Iyer's 28 not out propelled the Men in Blue to a 2-1 series win.

'I am not disappointed' - Kuldeep Yadav reacts after not being part of India's T20 World Cup squad

India thrashed South Africa by seven wickets in the third and final ODI at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday to clinch the three-match series 2-1. India also equalled Australia's 19-year-old record with their thumping victory against the Proteas.

India matched Australia's record for most victories by a team in a calendar year in international cricket. Australia had won a record 38 matches in the year 2003, including the ODI World Cup trophy. The Aussies have since held the record as no team has come close to overcoming their feat.

However, India recorded their 38th win in international cricket this year after defeating South Africa on Tuesday to equal Australia's record. India will get multiple chances to set a new record as they will next be seen in action during the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022.

He was well supported by spinners Washington Sundar and Shahbaz Ahmed, who picked up two wickets each as South Africa's middle-order crumbled under pressure.
