India skipper Rohit Sharma has taken the blame for the embarrassing defeat against South Africa in the first Test match after they lost by an innings and 32 runs. India were bowled out for 131 in their second innings and lost the contest on Day 3 as their wait for a series win on the Proteas soil continues. Dean Elgar was the star of the match with his 185-run knock, while Kagiso Rabada scalped seven wickets, including a five-for in the first innings. <h2>Rohit takes blame for defeat</h2>

“We were not good enough to win. Having been put into bat, KL batted well to get us that score but then we didn't exploit the conditions with the ball and then again didn't show up today with the bat. If we have to win Test matches, we have to come together collectively and we didn't do that. Guys have come here before, we know what to expect and everyone has their own plan. Our batters were challenged and we didn't adapt well. This is a boundary scoring ground, we saw them score many but we need to understand the opposition and their strengths as well,” Rohit said in the post-match.

The loss also had heavy ramifications on the World Test Championship (WTC) standings as India slipped to fifth spot while South Africa are top with a win in their first match of the cycle.

After securing a 163-run lead in their first innings, India were called into bat on Day 3 of the Centurion Test needing a good start. However, those plans were dented as the visitors lost the wickets of Rohit Sharma (0) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (5) early. This was Rohit’s fifth Test duck as he suffers from a poor run of form. Rohit was soon joined by Yashasvi Jaiswal (5) as India’s poor Test return continued. The visitors were 13/2 before Shubman Gill (26) and Virat Kohli (76) tried to stitch a partnership.

Later, Gill and Shreyas Iyer were scalped by Marco Jansen as India were 72/4 with KL Rahul and Kohli batting. With wickets falling at regular intervals, Kohli changed gears and tried to get his hundred however his wicket in the 35th over brought curtains to the innings as India lost by an innings and 32 runs. Apart from Virat, only Gill got into double figures for India as they now switch attention to the second Test in Cape Town.

“Following continuous medical assessments, it was determined that there was too much of a risk of aggravating his left hamstring injury had he gone out to bat at this stage of the game. The medical team are managing him to give him the best chance to bat should he be required in the 4th innings,” CSA stated in a statement on their social media handle.

The hosts were dealt a huge blow after skipper Bavuma was seen limping off the field in the first session of Day 1. It was reported that Bavuma was suffering from a hamstring issue which saw him unofficially get ruled out of the rest of the match. He was since not seen on the field and underwent scans which have revealed the extent of the injury.

However, the CSA’s statement has not ruled out Bavuma entirely from the match despite him not coming out to bat in South Africa’s second innings. The Proteas were bowled out for 408 with only nine wickets fallen, before they decided to call it a day.

At the time of writing, South Africa might not need Bavuma’s service in the second innings as India were 113/8 in their second innings and still trailed by 50 runs. As things stand, India are losing by an innings and still need 50 runs to avoid the catastrophe of embarrassing defeat.

He was soon dismissed after getting to the triple-figure as South Africa were called into bat in the first session of Day 2.

India wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul's century in the ongoing first Test against South Africa made him only the second Indian wicketkeeper to score a hundred in maiden Test with gloves duty. Before Rahul, Vijay Manjrekar had scored a hundred in his only Test as wicketkeeper, that is against West Indies in 1953 when he scored 118. Rahul is also only the second Indian wicketkeeper-batter to score a century in South Africa after Rishabh Pant.

Rahul, who scored 101 out of India's first innings total of 245, is also the only visiting batter to score two centuries at Centurion's SuperSport Park. His first century came on India's last tour of South Africa in 2021/22. In total, Rahul has scored 261 runs in five innings of three matches at the venue.

The batter also joined Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli in the list of batters with more than one Test hundred in South Africa. While Sachin has five Test hundreds in the country, both Kohli and Rahul have two each.

The century was Rahul's eighth in the red-ball cricket with six of them coming outside Asia - a testimony to his technique as a batter. In the last 15 years, only Kohli has scored more Test hundreds outside Asia among the Indians - 13 tons in 53 matches. Apart from these two, Ajinkya Rahane has also scored six hundreds outside Asia in 46 matches in the last decade and a half.

Before scoring a hundred in his maiden innings as a wicketkeeper in Tests, Rahul had also scored fifty-plus scores in ODIs and T20Is too. In ODIs, he scored 80 runs in 2020 against Australia and 56 against New Zealand in the same year.

Most recently, Rahul kept wickets for India in the ODI World Cup 2023 and was given the job for the Tests as India's first-choice wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant continues to recover from injuries sustained in a car crash in December 2022.&nbsp;

<h2>Elgar steals the show</h2>

Having been asked to bat in the overcast conditions of Centurion in the first session of Day 2, Elgar and company did not have the best start after they lost Aiden Markram on the fifth ball of the fourth over. However, in an excellent nick of form, the left-hand batter needed 141 balls to complete his ton against a resolute Indian bowling line-up. On the first ball of the 43rd over, Elgar smashed Shardul Thakur’s ball over the long-on to bring his ton.

After the ton, he was ecstatic and on the rise as he later helped South Africa take a vital first innings lead.

Mohammed Shami is no longer a part of the Test series due to an ankle injury. Either Mukesh Kumar or Prasidh Krishna will replace him. South Arica skipper Temba Bavuma believes that India's bowling attack for the upcoming two-Test series nullifies the challenges of playing in different conditions. Bavuma also attributed India's success in overseas conditions while playing red-ball cricket to their skillful bowling attack. He made the comments in Centurion where the two sides will face off each other in Boxing Day (Dec. 26) Test.&nbsp;

"We understand conditions a lot better so you'd expect us to adapt a lot better but their bowling is quite strong," said Bavuma. "The fact that they've been able to achieve such success is because of their bowling attack and that kind of nullifies the advantage we have. It's more between the batters and how the batters take on that challenge," he added.

India, notably, have never been able to win a Test series in South Africa and Bavuma said they take a lot of pride in keeping the record intact.&nbsp;

"There's a lot of pride attached to that - that we've been able to keep that record intact as a South African team... all of us as players also feel that," he said. "But we understand playing against India comes with certain challenges and it's those types of challenges we would like to focus on. Playing against India comes with a lot more eyes and a lot more scrutiny in terms of everything we do. So it's accepting that." he added.

India will be full strength when they take the field, at least in terms of batting, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli both coming back to the side after skipping the white-ball leg of the tour.

As for the bowling, India's ODI World Cup 2023 hero Mohammed Shami won't be taking part in the series with injury but Jasprit Bumrah will feature in the playing XI. Another important player who will be missed is wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant who is still recovering from the injuries sustained in the car crash he suffered in December last year.

Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, who decided to withdraw from the upcoming Test series against South Africa, is having mental fatigue. Kishan was not included in the two-Test squad and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cited his personal reasons for the exclusion. A report in the media outlet Indian Express, however, says that Kishan decided to take a break due to mental fatigue.

“He informed the team management that he is having mental fatigue and wants a break from cricket for some time. Everyone agreed to it,” said the media outlet, citing a source.

The team management has named KS Bharat as his backup for the series in South Africa which starts on Boxing Day (Dec. 26). Most Recently, the India batter played in the first three ODIs of the five-match series against Australia which took place right after the conclusion of ODI World Cup in November.

Ishan was, however, part of the three-T20I series against South Africa which followed after the Australia T20Is but newcomer Jitesh Sharma was given a chance ahead of him in all three games. He was not named in the squad for three ODIs which took place after the T20Is.

As for his exclusion from the Tests, BCCI had released a statement which read: “Ishan Kishan has requested the BCCI to be released from the upcoming Test series against South Africa citing personal reasons. The wicketkeeper has subsequently been withdrawn from the Test squad. The men’s selection committee has named KS Bharat as a replacement.”&nbsp;

Ishan has been with the team throughout this year but haven't gotten a consistent run. He was part of the Boarder-Gavaskar Test series in February-March but served a backup to Bharat. He then played one ODI in the subsequent three-match series against the Aussies before playing the IPL 2023.

'Mental fatigue' prompts India wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan to skip South Africa Tests - Report

With the three ODIs ending in India's favour&nbsp;on Thursday (Dec 21), the visitors now shift their focus to&nbsp;the two-match Test&nbsp;series versus South Africa&nbsp;in the African nation. The Test series kicks off on January 26, in Centurion, which will see many senior Indian players such as captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, R Ashwin, etc. return&nbsp;to action after the ODI World Cup final loss, to Australia last month.

Kohli will&nbsp;gear up for the Test series&nbsp;in a country where India have still not won&nbsp;a red-ball series. In the 2021-22 SA tour, Kohli scored 161 runs at an average of 40.25 with a top score of 79 in two of the three Tests. Thus, he will hope for a bright series and move past the ODI WC heartbreak. Ahead of the series opener, former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has backed Kohli to be among runs and feels he will be fired up to do well.

Asked if we will see an aggressive Kohli as witnessed in the last Test series in SA, hinting at&nbsp;the&nbsp;stump-mic aggression from the then Indian captain, Manjrekar said while talking on Star Sports, "No (stump-mic aggression from last series repeat?) because we have a new leader in Rohit Sharma. But you are right, it brings back memories of players saying something that they have never done before, suggesting that the local broadcasters supported the South African team and all that."

“But that was a different temperamental team the last time around, under Rohit Sharma, they tend to play differently. It's always the captain who creates the culture, so I don't see that happening," he opined.

Manjrekar added, "I&nbsp;see Virat Kohli doing his own few things. He is going to get fired up. The last trip to South Africa, he did not get a big one and Kohli has had to work harder for Test runs recently. When Virat Kohli is all fired up and angry, that's the sight I like. David Warner as well. When they get a little fired up, you see them batting better."

Kohli has had a good run in South Africa, i.e. undoubtedly a tough place for batters. He averages a healthy 51.35 with 719 runs in 14 innings, including two hundreds and three half-centuries. At present, he missed out on the team's ongoing three-day&nbsp;intra-squad game, in Pretoria, and&nbsp;returned to India due to a family emergency. The 35-year-old is expected to join the team before the first Test gets underway. Meanwhile, opener Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the red-ball series due to a finger injury.

The two Tests will be played in Centurion (Dec 26-30) and Cape Town (Jan 3-7).

The focus now shifts to the second and penultimate tie, which will be held at St George's Park, Gqeberha. The venue had hosted the second T20I, of the three-match series which ended at a 1-1 stalemate, that saw rain interrupting the clash. The hosts won that game by five wickets, by DLS method, after their run-chase was shortened to 15 overs. Fans will hope for rain to stay away to ensure a full game this time around.

Weather prediction for 2nd ODI

There is a light rain&nbsp;forecast on the match day. However, it is expected to be clear by the time the match kicks off. Hence, one can expect the conditions&nbsp;to be slightly overcast but a full game should be on the cards.

Talking about the surface, bounce at the venue is lower than most other venues in the African nation. Hence, it has not been a happy hunting ground for the Proteas. Notably, they have conceded two of the last three ODIs at the venue and interestingly, both to teams from the Indian subcontinent. Hence, India have a solid chance to take an unassailable lead and wrap up the series with a game to spare.

In reply, debutant Sai Sudharshan's unbeaten 55 and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer's 52 took India home without dropping much sweat.

At the post-match presentation, Rahul said, "I am happy. Good to have a win under the belt. Completely different to what we expected. The plan was to get the spinners in the game. SA vs India 2nd ODI, Weather report: Will rain interrupt second and penultimate tie in Gqeberha?

India’s stand-in ODI captain KL Rahul will look to cement his place back into the Test team as India take on South Africa in a three-match series starting on Sunday (Dec 17). While the focus is on the ODI series, Rahul narrates that keeping wickets in the Test format could help him keep his place in the side. India have a busy next few weeks in the Test format as they take South Africa before hosting England in a five-match test series.

<h2>Rahul to keep wickets in Tests?</h2>

"I don't know about all formats, right now my focus is on this ODI series. Yes, I'll be doing the same role. I'll be wicketkeeping and batting in the middle order. After that, yes, I would be happy to take up that role even in the Test matches,” Rahul said in the pre-match press conference on Saturday.

"I've always been open to doing new roles and accepting whatever role the team wants me to perform," Rahul said. "So I'm happy to do whatever the management, coach and captain ask of me. If that's the role the team sees me in, I'm happy to do that,” he added.

As a result of his&nbsp;brilliant bowling, he became the first Indian to take a five-for on South African soil in ODIs and scripted history. Asked to bowl first, the 24-year-old was at his fluent best from his first over when he got the better of Reeza Hendricks (0). <h2>Ishan withdraws from Test squad</h2>

On Sunday (Dec 17), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on its social media handle that Ishan won’t be available for the red-ball series. The BCCI did not mention the reason for Ishan’s withdrawal from the squad, but it is understood he is not injured and took the decision for a personal reason. Bharat will have another turn to impress the selectors as he will now travel to South Africa to replace the Mumbai Indians batter.

“Mr Ishan Kishan has requested the BCCI to be released from the upcoming Test series against South Africa citing personal reasons. The wicket-keeper has subsequently been withdrawn from the Test squad,” a statement on the BCCI website read.

“The Men’s Selection Committee has named Mr KS Bharat as a replacement,” the statement added.

Rahul on Saturday had quoted that he is ready to keep the wickets in the Test format and bat in the middle-order. While Bharat’s experience will be a key factor, Rahul will be expected to be the man with the gloves during the two-match Test series which starts on Boxing Day (26th December).

India pacer Mohammed Shami out of South Africa Tests with injury; Akash Deep replaces Deepak Chahar for ODIs

India beat South Africa by 106&nbsp;runs in the third T20I on Thursday (Dec. 14) to end the three-match series with a 1-1 scoreline. <h2>'When he does well, it's not just him, but the entire country becomes happy'</h2>

Speaking on Star Sports, Gambhir said, "When you come in after a lot of handwork, first-class cricket and you have performed at every single stage, then you value each of your knocks. Then you start every innings like it is your first one, and you won't take anything for granted. Whatever success he gets, I feel, he deserves it. Because Rinku Singh hasn't got anything easily. When he does well, it's not just him, but the entire country becomes happy."

Talking about Rinku's 68*, which was his maiden T20I fifty, he came out to bat at No. 5 and took India's score to 180 for 7 in 19.3 overs before rain ended India's innings. The target for the Proteas was 152 in 15 overs, which the Aiden Markram-led side completed in 13.5 overs courtesy of Reeza Hendricks' 49, Markram's 30 and cameos from the lower-middle order.&nbsp;

The Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian team will look to end the series with a 1-1 scoreline on Thursday. The first T20I was completely washed out in Durban. For Rinku, who has had scores of&nbsp;38 (21), 37* (15), 22* (14), 31* (14), 46 (29), 46 (29), 6 (10) and 68* (39) in his brief T20I career, will look to play another crucial knock for his side in the series decider.&nbsp;

SA vs Ind, T20Is: When Rinku Singh performs well, whole of India becomes happy - Former opener Gautam Gambhir

India's stand-in T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav is not perturbed by the five-wicket defeat in the second T20I against South Africa on Tuesday (Dec. 12). Yadav, fondly called SKY, is satisfied with the 'brand of cricket' played by India and said that the mood in the dressing room is full of cheer.

The skipper, however, acknowledged that the Proteas batted brilliantly in the powerplay while chasing and that helped them win despite India putting up a par score.

Speaking after the loss to the broadcasters in Gqeberha, SKY said (not verbatim): "I think it was a par score, but they batted beautifully in the first five-six overs. That's the brand of cricket we were talking about. The message was loud and clear. It was a little tough [to bowl], but I told my boys were out of our comfort zone. The mood in the camp is always happy, and full of cheer, because I've said whatever happens on the ground, leave it on the ground. Really looking forward to the third T20I."

After the first T20I was washed out without even the toss, South Africa won the coin flip on Tuesday and elected to field first. India had a horrible start after being asked to bat as they lost both openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (0) and Shubman Gill (0) for just six runs in the first two overs.

Skipper Surya then added 49 runs for the third wicket with Tilak Varma before the latter got out on a personal score of 29. Rinku Singh came in and added 70 runs for the fourth wicket before SKY got out after scoring 36-ball 56. Rinku (68 not out off 39) continued to hold end as India reached 180/7 in 19.3 overs before the rain stopped play and eventually ended India's innings.

Chasing a revised total of 152 in 15 overs, SA opener Rezza Hendricks led the charge with a 27-ball 49. Other batters also kept contributing as the hosts reached the target in 13.5 overs with five wickets left to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

'Mood in camp is always happy,' says unperturbed India skipper Suryakumar after loss in 2nd T20I vs SA

Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh hit rapid half-centuries for India but South Africa chased down an adjusted target to win the second Twenty20 international by five wickets at St George's Park in Gqeberha on Tuesday.

India, sent in to bat, were 180 for seven when rain ended the innings with three balls remaining in their 20 overs.

After a delay of almost an hour, South Africa were set to make 152 off 15 overs.

Led by a hard-hit 49 off 27 balls by opening batsman Reeza Hendricks, South Africa won with seven balls to spare. They took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series after the first match in Durban was rained off.

South African captain Aiden Markram admitted that the conditions favoured his team. Rain fell in the lead-up to the match before returning at the end of the Indian innings.&nbsp;

"The second bit of rain helped us. The ball skidded on a bit and also affected the outfield," said Markram.

Indian captain Suryakumar hit 56 off 36 balls and Singh was unbeaten with a career-best 68 off 39 deliveries.

Suryakumar went out to bat with the total on six for two after two overs. Both openers, Yashavi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, were dismissed without scoring.

The precarious situation did not deter the captain and Tilak Varma (29) from going on the attack against some erratic bowling. They added 49 off 25 balls.

Suryakumar and Singh then put on 70 off 49 balls.

"That's the brand of cricket we want to play, whatever the situation," said Suryakumar.&nbsp;

Markram said the Indian assault meant he had to be strategic with the way he handled the bowlers, with player of the match Tabraiz Shamsi bowling his left-arm wrist spin in three spells to take one for 18, easily the most economical figures of the match.&nbsp;

"Shammy bowled incredibly well," said Markham.

Gerald Coetzee took three for 32, taking wickets with what proved to be the last two balls of the Indian innings.

Mohammed Siraj was walking out to face the hat-trick delivery when the umpires took the players off the field.

Brief scores:

India 180-7 in 19.3 overs (S. Yadav 56, R. Singh 68 not out; G. Coetzee 3-32).

South Africa 154-5 in 13.5 overs (R. Hendricks 49, A. Markram 30; M. Kumar 2-34).

Result: South Africa won by five wickets (DLS Method).

Series: South Africa lead the three-match series 1-0.

<h2>Rinku breaks glass at St George's Park</h2>

On the final two balls of the 19th over, Rinku smashed Aiden Markram for two monstrous sixes as India made a swift recovery despite a dull start. However, it was the second six on the final ball of the 19th over which caught everyone’s eyes as it smashed the glass of the media box at St George's Park. This resulted in the glass being broken into pieces, just moments before the play was halted due to rain.

At the time of writing, India were 180/7 from 19.3 overs with Rinku batting an unbeaten 68 off 39 while Mohammed Siraj was yet to face a ball despite coming out to bat. Rain interruption would then play a major role as the innings was then called off due to time lost. South Africa were then called into bat as the match was reduced to 15 overs and the African side was given a revised target to chase.

India’s stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav has dismissed talks of any ODI World Cup fatigue while lamenting the series win against Australia as a big boost ahead of the South Africa series. The Indian team is all set to kick off their month-long South Africa tour on Sunday (Dec 10) as they play the Proteas in the first T20I in Durban. A young squad led by Suryakumar will look to start on a high having recently clinched the T20I series against the Aussies 4-1.

<h2>Surya dismisses World Cup hangover</h2>

“The World Cup defeat was a disappointment, and it is tough to move on from it. But the series win against Australia was a big boost even though it came in a different format. The players put their hands up against Australia and came up with fearless cricket, and we need to play the same against South Africa. I just told them (players) to do exactly what they do in franchise cricket,” Suryakumar said in the pre-match press conference.

India will be banking on the young shoulders of Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill and Rinku Singh in the series with senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya not part of the traveling contingent. While Rohit and Virat have been rested, Hardik is currently spending time out due to a shoulder injury which has seen Suryakumar take the reins as the skipper.

<h2>SKY on team combination</h2>

Sky opened up on the team combination for the opening clash in Durban Gill will be one of the openers alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad while Ishan will be expected to play at No.3. India have a formidable middle order of skipper Sky and Rinku&nbsp;Singh, with the duo firing on all cylinders in the recent time.

“We have the combination in mind. We know who are going to open tomorrow, and perhaps, will take a final call after the practice session today. Yes, we have enough sixth bowler options in this side to bank upon. I am enjoying it. It is all about keeping the players together and this is a fine group of players,” Suryakumar added.

India will play three T20Is followed by three ODIs in the limited-overs format before they switch to the Tests. Rohit Sharma and Virat will return to the side along with Jasprit Bumrah while Mohammed Shami’s involvement is subject to a fitness test with the two-match series set to start on Boxing Day.
