India will lock horns with England in a three-match T20I series which gets underway on Thursday (July 07). India were ahead in the all-important Test match for the first three days as they aimed to script a historic series win in England with a 2-1 lead in their bag from last year. However, England got the better of Jasprit Bumrah &amp; Co., who struggled massively with the ball during England's second innings and managed to pick up only three wickets.

India have now lost their last three Test matches in a row overseas. They had suffered back-to-back defeats in the final two Tests against South Africa earlier this year and have now lost three in a row overseas. Dravid rued the missed opportunities in South Africa and said India have struggled to pick 20 wickets in a Test match over the last few months which is one of the major reasons behind the drop in performances.

"It's been disappointing for us.&nbsp;I mean we had a couple of opportunities in South Africa as well and here as well. I just think it's something we need to look at, something we need to probably work on," Dravid told reporters after India's 7-wicket loss at Edgbaston.

"We have been very good at that over the last few years, in terms of taking wickets and winning those Test matches. But, yeah, we haven't been able to do that over the last few months. It could be a variety of factors: it could be maybe we just need to maintain that intensity, maintain that level of fitness, or maintain that level of performance right through a Test match," he added.

The 5th Test between India and England was originally scheduled to be played in Old Trafford in Manchester last year but had to be postponed due to COVID-19. India woud perhaps have wanted to close out the series last year considering they were dominant throughout and almost had a series win in their pocket.

Dravid, who was not part of India's coaching staff back then with Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli still in charge, insisted situation of both teams were different during the series last year. However, he asserted he won't make any excuses for India's horrible show with the ball at Edgbaston.

"I don't want to make excuses. I wasn't part of the team then. India was on a roll at that stage. England were probably in a slightly different situation at that point of time. An investigation has been launched into allegations of racist abuse aimed at Indian fans during the fourth day of the fifth Test between India and England at Edgbaston, the ECB and Warwickshire County Cricket Club said. Several Indian fans took to Twitter to report the racist behaviour they endured during the fourth day's play on Monday night. They claimed that some British fans hurled racial taunts at them.

Former Yorkshire cricketer Azeem Rafiq, whose testimony to a British parliamentary committee last year led to an investigation into claims of institutional racism at Yorkshire and resulted in major reforms, retweeted some of the social media posts describing the racist behaviour. "Disappointing to read," he wrote.

The official Edgbaston Twitter account responded to Rafiq's tweet saying: "We're incredible sorry to read this and do not condone this behaviour in anyway. We'll be investigating this ASAP."

Warwickshire later released a statement, stating they are investigating the incident. "I'm gutted by these reports as we're working hard to make Edgbaston a safe, welcoming environment for all," Stuart Cain, Chief Executive at Edgbaston said.

"Having seen the initial tweets, I've spoken personally to the gentleman who raised them and we're now speaking to the stewards in this area to establish what happened.

"Nobody should be subject to any form of abuse at Edgbaston. So, once we've got all the facts, we will make sure this issue is addressed swiftly," the statement added.

Pietersen, who is a huge admirer of Bumrah as a bowler, criticised the Indian skipper for failing to get his tactics right against Root and Bairstow during England's second innings. Pietersen reckoned it had become too easy for the England duo to steal singles and the Indian pacer didn't trouble them at all.

"I don't think Bumrah got his tactics right today at all, and I say that with the greatest deal of respect," Pietersen said on Sky Sports post stumps on Day 4.

After slamming a stunning century in the first innings, the wicket-keeper batter played&nbsp;another brilliant knock of 57 runs in the second innings to help India extend their lead beyond the 300-run mark and take control of the game.

Pant notched up his half-century during the first session on Day 4 (Monday) as he once again displayed his power-hitting skills and played in his own swashbuckling style. He notched up his fifty off just 76 deliveries before getting dismissed by Jack Leach on 57 off 86 balls.

With his brilliant half-century, Pant broke a 72-year-old Test record held by former West Indies wicket-keeper batter Clyde Walcott. The left-hander surpassed Walcott to break the record for the highest amount of runs scored in a Test match in England by a visiting wicket-keeper. Walcott had scored a total of 182 runs in the Lord's Test against England in 1950.

England were in all sorts of trouble with half of the team back in the pavilion as the scoreboard made a sorry reading at 84 for 5. The hosts still 332 runs behind the visitors. In the first session, Stuart Broad must have had a feeling of 'deja vu' when he was literally butchered by the stand-in Indian captain, who scored 29 runs with the willow and also was gifted six extra runs to make it 35, highest ever in a single over in Test cricket.

In his first match at the helm as captain, Bumrah would have never thought that he would pip Brian Lara's maximum runs (28 runs) in a single Test match over, which remained intact for 18 years. George Bailey and Keshav Maharaj though had equalled the feat.

Broad can't be faulted if he remembered that September, 2007 night in Durban, when Yuvraj Singh pummelled him for six sixes in an over. He got his 550th Test wicket on the day but by the end of it all, Bumrah had wiped that wry smile off his face.

After two days of play, India hold all the aces and look good to retain the Pataudi Trophy and stay in contention for a place in the World Test Championship final. While India next play a Test series against Bangladesh in December, the second day in Edgbaston might have provided India with a realistic long-term captaincy option in traditional format as and when Rohit Sharma decides to call time on his Test career.

India's 'MVP' Jadeja 
 
At the start of the day, Jadeja reaffirmed his status as India's most valuable player across formats as he scored his best Test hundred -- 104 off 194 balls. This century, though, was of a far better quality than his earlier two, especially if one factors in the conditions, match situation and quality of opposition bowling.

Jadeja hit 13 boundaries, and his near four and half hours stay at the crease, gave Pant an opportunity to play his natural attacking game, even as the former dourly defended as and when required. A punchy drive through the cover-point region got him his third century four months after he got the second one in Mohali.

Having already scored 2500 runs in Test cricket alongside taking 242 wickets, Jadeja can safely be termed as the best all-rounder that the Indian team has had since the great Kapil Dev. A Test batting average of 37 plus is better than many specialists who have played for India over the years.

Bumrah used the bat like a sword and even the top-edges seemed like ball hitting the "sweet spot" as four boundaries and two sixes came off Broad's over. There were hooks, pulls and drives to enthral the capacity crowd.

India got off to a disappointing start on Day 1 after England won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first in the all-important clash. However, Pant then combined with Ravindra Jadeja to help India fight back.
