Pant was lauded by many on Twitter for his fantastic knock with former India batter Virender Sehwag also heaping praise on him for his heroics. "Pant is in a league of his own. The most entertaining cricketer in the world, this is a special one," Sehwag had written for Pant in a tweet while sharing a meme.&nbsp;

Pant responded to Sehwag's message for him on Saturday (July 02) and called him one of the greatest. Pant has often been compared with Sehwag for his attacking and aggressive approach in Test cricket which is similar to the former India opener, who was one of the most destructive batters in the longest format during his playing days.

Jadeja slammed a brilliant knock of 104 runs off 194 balls and combined with centurion Rishabh Pant (146) to help India post a strong total of 416 runs on the board in their first innings.

India got off to a disastrous start after being asked to bat first by England in the all-important first Test. The visitors were reduced to 98/5 inside 28 overs before Pant and Jadeja joined forces to post a staggering 222-run stand for the sixth wicket. While Pant slammed a stunning 146 off 111 balls laced with 20 fours and 4 sixes, Jadeja smashed 13 fours en route to his 104-run knock.

India's stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah created a new world record in Test cricket as he went bonkers with the bat towards the end of India's first innings on Day 2 of the ongoing rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Bumrah launched an all-out attack against England pacer Stuart Broad and created the world record for most runs in a single over in Test cricket with 35 runs off it.

Bumrah, who is leading India in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma in the ongoing Edgbaston Test, is the first fast bowler since the legendary Kapil Dev to captain the national team in the longest format. He came out to bat at number 10 during India's first innings and went on to play a sensational cameo.

Bumrah attacked Broad in the 84th over of India's innings as he started the over with a four before the England pacer bowled a short ball which flew over wicket-keeper Sam Billings' head and raced away to the boundary to hand India 5 extra runs. Bumrah slammed a six off the next one which was a no-ball and followed it up with three back-to-back fours off the next three balls. He then clubbed a six off the penultimate delivery from Broad before taking a single to end the over.

However, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja turned out to be the saviours for the visitors with a brilliant partnership of 222 runs for the sixth wicket to help India bounce back from a poor start.

Pant was the stand-out performer with the bat for India on Day 1 as he continued his exploits in the whites. The left-hand dasher, who is known for his attacking approach irrespective of the format, slammed the England bowlers to all parts of the ground en route to a stunning knock of 146 runs off 111 balls.

Pant went after the England bowlers right from the start of his innings despite India being under pressure. He notched up his century off just 89 balls to slam the fastest hundred by an Indian wicket-keeper batter in Tests. His 146-run-knock was laced with 20 fours and 4 sixes. "Yes. Not only his knock but also the partnership with Ravindra Jadeja was incredible. If India wins this Test, I think it will be one of Pant's best Test innings," said Jaffer.&nbsp;

"Especially in conditions like England, where you know the bowler is bowling well, then it becomes important to disturb his (bowler’s) line and length. I keep trying that I do not play in the same manner so that the bowler gets mentally disturbed," he added.

At 98 for five, India were staring down the barrel but Pant (146 off 111 balls) scripted a remarkable turnaround in the company of Ravindra Jadeja (83 batting off 163) as the duo shared a match changing 222-run stand off 239 balls.

Pant, who rendered the England bowlers helpless, hammered 20 boundaries and four sixes, in his awe-inspiring effort.

The rain in the morning meant only 73 overs could be bowled on the opening day.

Having faced criticism for his struggles in white-ball cricket recently, Pant continued his love affair with the red-ball format by smashing his fifth century overall and fourth in overseas conditions.

The conditions and match situation was against him but he once again thrived on it to leave the opposition frustrated.

As only he could, he danced down the track against the great James Anderson, reverse scooped him but also played conventional strokes, including the straight drives and back foot punches, enroute to the fastest hundred (89 balls) by an Indian wicketkeeper.

In the nervous 90s, he fell on the ground while going aerial over Jack Leach but that still fetched him a four before reaching three figures in the following over.

Stokes fancied Leach's chances against Pant but the ploy failed miserably as the southpaw collected boundaries off the left-arm spinner at will. Leach ended up with day's figures of 0/71 in nine overs. Pant went ballistic in what happened to be Leach's last over of the day, clobbering him two sixes and as many fours.

With a couple of hundreds in England, one each in Australia and South Africa, Pant has already walked into the list of the finest wicketkeeper-batters to have come out of India.

The 24-year-old's epic innings came to an end towards close of play with part-timer Joe Root providing the much needed breakthrough.

Jadeja, who enjoyed Pant's audacious stroke from the other end, also played a major role in India's remarkable recovery and produced some delightful drives on the way.

After overs were lost in the first two sessions due to rain, the evening session was played in bright sunshine. 
Pant and Jadeja's counter-attacking partnership had helped India recover to 174 for five at tea after the visitors lost half their side shortly after lunch.

Rain delayed the start of the second session by an hour and England were all over India soon after play resumed.

While Anderson did the damage in the morning, Matthew Potts got the prized wicket of an out of form Virat Kohli (11) and a shaky Hanuma Vihari (20) post lunch to put England on top.

Vihari was the first to go after Potts trapped him in front of the stumps with a full ball that darted back sharply. In his following over, Potts sent back Kohli, who dragged one on to his stumps in his half-hearted attempt to leave the ball.

Shreyas Iyer (15 off 11 balls), playing his first Test outside India, started on an aggressive note by collecting three fours off Potts. However, Anderson and the support staff had done their homework on Iyer, who has had issues against the short ball.

The 39-year-old pacer angled one around the rib cage area that induced a faint edge on way to Sam Billings, who took a brilliant one handed catch diving full-stretched to his left.

India looked down and out at that stage and fresh lease of life was infused in the innings by the two southpaws, Pant and Jadeja.

Earlier, England's most decorated pacer Anderson produced probing spells in the rain-hit morning session to reduce India to 53 for two. Rain forced the lunch break 20 minutes before time.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee has picked the squads for the three-match T20I and ODI series against England to be played after the fifth Test. "Ashwin hasn't travelled with the squad to UK as he has tested positive for Covid-19 before departure," a BCCI source told the news agency&nbsp;PTI.&nbsp; "But we are hopeful that Ashwin will recover well in time before the Test match starts on July 1. However, Ashwin might miss the practice game against Leicestershire,” the source added.
