The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) is leaving no stone unturned in its effort to ensure a smooth hosting of India's World Cup 2023 opener against Australia on Sunday (Oct 8) at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. With rain lashing the capital city in the past few weeks, the TNCA has imported four new super-soppers from Australia to avoid a washout situation.

Though the rain threat is cut down significantly in the lead-up to the high-octane clash, with the MET department predicting only a 10 per cent chance of thunderstorms on game day, completely discounting chances of showers would be a mistake.

Over the past three weeks, widespread rains in Chennai forced TNCA to postpone its league matches, with the scenario not changing over the recent weekend as matches scheduled on Saturday and Sunday took place on Monday.

Since only a few days are left before the match gets underway in Chennai, the TNCA officials claim to take every possible precaution to curb the rain threat.

"We have bought four new advanced super-soppers for the World Cup because we don’t want to take any chances. We have also replaced all the old covers with new ones, including heavy ones so that we have all bases covered," a TNCA official said, as quoted by the Indian Express.

Outside of the big India vs. Australia game, Chennai will host four more matches. Per the report, three pitches are being prepared for India's first CWC match, while the final call will be taken 48 hours before the start of the game. On Monday, the ground staff at the Chepauk stadium was busy giving final touches to the surfaces.&nbsp;

Per the ground staff, the outfield has remained dry despite the rains, cutting down the toss factor. Historically, the Chepauk stadium favours spinners, with stats revealing only five 300-plus totals scored at the venue in ODIs. India hasn't scored 300 or more at this venue.

Meanwhile, India and Australia are two frontrunners for the CWC title, with both teams possessing match winners in bulk.&nbsp;

While Australia will have Adam Zampa as the lone spinner for their campaign, India roped in Ravi Ashwin as the injured Axar Patel's replacement. India is likely to play all three - Ravindra Jadeja, Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav.

Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag was not impressed with the way Shubman Gill gave away his wicket in the second ODI against Australia on September 24 in Indore. Gill, who scored 104, got out in the 35th over of the innings as India plundered their way to 399/5 in 50 overs.

Sehwag, however, was of the opinion that Gill missed out on a bigger score. The former India opener, who has a double hundred to his name at the same venue, said he could have scored even 200 today (match day).&nbsp;

“He missed out last time but ensured that he got his hundred today, but I would still say that the form he is in he should have scored 160 or 180. He is now of just 25. Had he scored 200 today then he wouldn't have become tired and could have fielded as well. At 30, he would have found it difficult because he wouldn't have recovered. So it is better to score big runs now,” Sehwag said in a conversation with Cricbuzz.

Batting at number three, Iyer smashed 105 off just 90 balls while adding 200 runs with Shubman Gill for the second wicket as India amassed 399/5 in 50 overs - their highest score in ODIs against Australia. Speaking about his performance, Iyer said that he always believed in his abilities and would thank himself for the innings.

“It was definitely a roller coaster ride. I would like to thank myself, to be honest. For believing in my abilities and mindset at that point of time. I was feeling a bit lonely but thanks to my physios, my trainers, my family they backed me, grateful to have them around,” Iyer told reporters after his Player-of-the-Match innings.

“To be honest I was not doubting my abilities because I knew I was batting brilliantly in the nets, also the start I got against Pakistan. Just a matter of one inning and I knew it was around the corner, thankfully I was able to execute,” he added.

Iyer, notably, is coming off&nbsp;a long injury layoff and rates his hundred - third in ODIs - as one of the finest innings so far.

“It was one of my finest innings, especially coming out of an injury. I was eagerly waiting to come back and perform for the team. All these game we are getting before the World Cup, it is a good platform for us, especially me as I have not got a lot of games under my belt," he said.

India lead the three-match series 2-0 and the third ODI will be played on September 27 in Rajkot.

The batsman also had the gloves duties and performed well, scoring&nbsp;a century against Pakistan in Super Four stage at the regional tournament. Rahul's form surely has given a lot of relief to India which were facing a lot of heat for including Rahul for a big tournament right after coming from an injury.

“Everyone has seen me playing in the Asia Cup, I played all the games in the Super Fours. I kept 50 overs, batted and scored runs as well, so I think that question is answered for everyone who were concerned about my fitness. Shami, therefore had to sit out of the Asia Cup group stage game despite possessing impressive figures.

On Friday he was at his fluent best yet again for Team India as they beat Australia by five wickets in Mohali. He was rewarded with the Player of the Match award having ended with figures of 51/4 in 10 overs. His good performance has now given a good headache to the team management as Siraj was rested for the series. Upon his return, there will be competition for places on the team.

R Ashwin is set to make his ODI return, after a long time, during the India-Australia home series, which gets underway on Friday (September 22) in Mohali. With Axar Patel injured during the Asia Cup, it has opened the doors for Ashwin's ODI comeback in India's last series before the CWC 2023 edition at home, starting on October 05 in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

Not only Ashwin, Washington Sundar has also been included in the India squad for the three ODIs versus the Aussies. Ashwin last played an ODI in early 2022 during India's tour of South Africa. Kuldeep Yadav-Yuzvendra Chahal's rise since mid-2017, when Ashwin wasn't at his best in white-ball formats, along with India stressing for a left-hander down the order, with good hitting prowess, led to Ashwin being sidelined.&nbsp;However, former Indian spinner Amit Mishra feels Ashwin's fielding also kept him away from the shorter formats in recent years.&nbsp;

Mishra said while discussing India's team selection for the Australia series, on Jio Cinema, "Ashwin is undoubtedly a quality bowler and a wicket-taker, but remember this is not a 20-over game. It is of 50 overs. The only reason he has been picked is because if a spinner gets injured, then the team needs to have a wicket-taking option, which Ashwin brings. Ashwin has got an edge as an off-spin option, as India already has two left-arm spinners and a wrist-spinner in Kuldeep Yadav."

R Ashwin not in Indian team because of his fielding, says Amit Mishra ahead of India-Australia ODIs

Australia are aiming to get their senior players some game time in the three-match ODI series against India which starts Friday, September 22 ahead of the ODI World Cup. The Kangaroos, however, would be without pacer Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell for the series opener. Skipper Pat Cummins, however, is hopeful that the duo is available for the later games of the series.

Notably, Starc is coming back from a groin injury while Maxwell is returning from paternity leave and ankle soreness from last year's leg injury. Apart from them, Cummins himself is waiting to get some game time after a wrist injury while Steve Smith too is returning&nbsp;following a wrist issue.

"We want to strike the balance between getting used to these conditions, hopefully winning some games, but we also don't want to get to that first game [of the World Cup] and already be cooked," Cummins said. "No doubt we'll be trying a few different combinations, a few different players will get a chance but ideally we'd like to structure up pretty closely to how we'll play in the World Cup."

"So batters batting in similar positions, ... and as a captain I want to get used to how you use your bowlers over here, it might be a bit different to say South Africa or Australia. Does the second spinner play a part? Hopefully we get some answers over the next few games," he added.

While Australia have been using Marcus Stoinis as a new-ball bowler, Cameroon Green and Sean Abbott are the other options. Both Green and Abbott did take part in the recently-conclude South Africa ODI series and are available again following a bit of&nbsp;fitness issues.

"You need five bowlers, so the more allrounders you have you can really bolster your batting," Cummins said. "It gives us flexibility to pick four genuine bowlers or maybe three bowlers and bat an allrounder at No. 8. Hopefully Maxi comes back later in the series, but the other three guys have been bowling fantastically," added the Aussie skipper.
