<p>Former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh has criticised Shreyas Iyer for getting out on a reckless shot against Australia during the ODI World Cup 2023 match in Chennai on October 8. India were two down for two runs when Iyer came to bat and lasted just three balls before getting out.</p>

<p>Iyer drove a length ball from Josh Hazelwood away from the body in the air and David Warner made no mistakes at short cover. Iyer was second wicket to fall in Hazlewood's over, leaving India three down for two runs in a chase of 200.</p>

<p>Yuvraj, who was Player of the Series in 2011 World Cup, wasn't particularly happy with Iyer's shot. Taking to his social media platform X, Yuvraj wrote, "No 4 batsman has to absorb the pressure !! Need better thinking from @ShreyasIyer15 when team is trying to rebuild their innings!"</p>

<p>Yuvraj also questioned sending Iyer ahead of KL Rahul after the latter had scored a hundred against Pakistan in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2023 while playing at number 4.</p>

<p>Rahul also added 165 runs with Virat Kohli (85) for the fourth wicket after India were three down for two runs. The Aussies had dropped Kohli in the fourth over when he was batting on 12 and after Kohli's drop, Yuvraj went on to predict that it might cost Australia.</p>

<h2><strong>Spinners dominate day</strong></h2>

<p>Playing three spinners, it was Jasprit Bumrah who started India’s trade of wickets when he got the better of Mitchell Marsh for a duck on the second ball of the third over. David Warner (41) and Steve Smith (46) would then stitch a 69-run stand for the second wicket before Kuldeep sent the former back to the pavilion. Smith and Labuschagne (27) then tried to bring the Aussies back on track before Ravindra Jadeja&nbsp;showed his class.</p>

<p>On the first ball of the 28th over, Jadeja stunned Smith with an outside the leg stump ball that surprised him before his stumps were castled. Smith was left stranded after his dismissal as he did not judge the flight of the ball which surprised him. For Jadeja’s credit, he played the mind games to get the former skipper out on 46.</p>

<p>The Aussies quickly went from 110/2 to 119/5, losing wickets in succession to put India in the box seat in Chennai. Local favourite Ravi Ashwin would then join the party when he got the better of Cameron Green (8), while Glenn Maxwell (15) was dismissed in the previous over.</p>

<p>With Australia 140/7, the tail-enders showed good resilience to steer their side to 199 with India now needing to push with their batting line-up. For India, Jadeja ended with three wickets while Bumrah and Kuldeep scalped two each. There were wickets each for Ashwin, Hardik Pandya, and Mohammed Siraj.</p>

<p>India are likely to open with Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan in Shubman Gill’s absence while KL Rahul could be deployed in the middle order with Shreyas Iyer. India have opted not to use Suryakumar Yadav in the contest while Shardul Thakur was also dropped in favour of Ashwin.</p>

<p>In the pictures that have since gone viral on social media platforms, Kohli could be seen seemingly exasperated at the audacity of the pitch invader. While Jarvo 69 talked to Kohli, the security personnel arrived and escorted him out of the ground. BCCI is yet to release any statement regarding his fate.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India spinner Ravindra Jadeja rattled Australia with two wickets in an over during the ODI World Cup 2023 match in Chennai on October 8. Jadeja dismissed Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey in the 30th over of the Australian innings, shortly after sending back Steve Smith.</p>

<p>Australia were 119/3 in 29.1 overs when Labuschagne tried to sweep Jadeja but instead got an edge and wicketkeeper KL Rahul made no mistake&nbsp;behind the stumps. Carey then came to bat and lasted two balls as Jadeja trapped him Leg Before Wicket (LBW). Have a look at the wickets here:</p>

<p>Earlier, Australia won the toss and elected to bat first in their World Cup opener. India pacer Jasprit Bumrah, however, dismissed Aussie opener Mitchell Marsh for a duck to dent Australian innings early on. Steve Smith and David Warner started rebuilding the innings afterwards and added 69 runs for the second wicket.</p>

<p>Kuldeep Yadav then dismissed Warner (41) to bring India back in the game. Indian spinners then put on a choke on Australia's run rate, giving away just 31 runs from over 16 to 25. Jadeja then bowled a peach of delivery to clean bowled Steve Smith (46).</p>

That gives us that luxury of playing three spinners and three seamers as well you know so there's a possibility that we can play three spinners on this pitch with three seamers as well, so it gives us that balance."</p>

<p>Jasprit Bumrah bowled brilliantly as he sent back Australia opener Mitchell Marsh back for a duck in India's opening game of the ODI World Cup 2023 in Chennai on Sunday (October 8). Former India skipper Virat Kohli also played his part as he took a brilliant catch in the slips to support the bowler.</p>

<p>Indian seamers, Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, had started well by keeping the lines tight and not giving any room to the Aussie batters to free their arm. In the third over of the innings Bumrah came on to bowl to Marsh and sent a length ball outside off. The Aussie batter edged it to the slips while trying to defend and Kohli did rest of the work. <p>Having arrived in Chennai on Wednesday noon, the Indian and Australian teams commenced net practice sessions at the stadium on Thursday, while Gill had to give these sessions a miss, owing to his poor health as the home team's first game in the World Cup, Sunday's game is much awaited.</p>

<p>With the ODI format and its relevance being debated about, after the average footfall at the inaugural England vs. New Zealand game in Ahmedabad, Sunday's game is expected to show the enthusiasm that a team India game generates in the stadium and off it.</p>

<p>Speaking of the hectic travel and demanding World Cup schedule across ten-Indian cities, Dravid said he saw it as a great opportunity for the Indian team to perform before the home crowd and showcase their talent.</p>

<p>Queried about the ideal score for the India-Australia game, Rahul mentioned he saw no ideal score and teams would have to "adapt and react", as there was no template of a safe total. On the larger tournament, he elaborated on the red soil and black soil conditions at different pitches across venues and how each one posed a unique challenge.</p>

<p>On the dwindling popularity of the ODI format, Dravid said the Indian team hasn't played a lot of ODI Cricket in recent times. He listed out the T20 tournaments that had to be played in quick succession and also the impact of COVID as being some of the probable factors.</p>

<p>"It (ODI) is a fantastic format to play - how much will be decided by a variety of factors..." he said.</p>

<p>Australia could be without their star all-rounder Marcus Stoinis for their World Cup 2023 opener against India on Sunday (Oct 8) in Chennai, head coach Andrew McDonald said to media on Thursday. Stoinis picked up a hamstring niggle during the first ODI against India in Mohali last month and has been out since, even opting to sit out in the two warm-up matches.</p>

<p>While addressing the media, McDonald said Australia will have two practice sessions on Thursday and Friday and will take a call on his selection after that only.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"He's got a slight hamstring complaint at this stage, so that's why he missed the practice games, and he'll be touch and go for the first game against India," Australia coach Andrew McDonald said of Stoinis.</p>

<p>"We've got the main session today, and then another hit out tomorrow, so he'll go through his work there, and we'll see whether he's available for selection for game one, but at the moment, he wasn't fit and available for those practice games,” he added.</p>

<h2>‘Maxwell pulled up really well’</h2>

<p>Emphasizing the value in-form Maxwell adds to the side, McDonald said with both Green and Glenn Maxwell starring with both bat and ball in the lead-up to the marquee event, Australia would like to benefit from this and move forward accordingly in the tournament.</p>

<p>"Cameron Green got a little bit of time in the middle also, and clearly Glenn Maxwell being able to cope with the demands of the game that he played, a significant innings plus being able to back up and bowl as many overs as he did. He has pulled up really well,” McDonald said.</p>

<p>“So, a few of those moving parts that we had leading in have unfolded positively for us, which is nice. If you asked me two weeks ago, I would have been a little bit worried, but now everything seems to have come together nicely,” the head coach further admitted.</p>

<p>India skipper Rohit Sharma has opened up on his team’s approach as they prepare for the upcoming ODI World Cup which starts on Thursday (Oct 5). Rohit, one of the 10 captains in the marquee tournament, will eye glory but insists his team will take one match at a time during the tournament. All the 10 captains participating in the World Cup met on the eve of the curtain-raiser in the pre-tournament shoot where Rohit opened on his team’s approach.</p>

<h2><strong>Rohit opens on team’s approach</strong></h2>

<p>“Not thinking too much about it, honestly it has happened in the last three editions of the World Cup but all I can say is we are going to try our best, give our best, and enjoy the tournament. That’s all I can say at this point in time because it’s a pretty long tournament and I do understand that you can’t get too far ahead of yourself. So, it’s important for us that we try and focus on one job at a time and then move on from there,” Sharma said in the captain's event arranged on Wednesday.</p>

<p>India will look to become the fourth consecutive nation to win the ODI World Cup on home soil, a tradition that started with the hosts in 2011. India became the first nation to win the ODI World Cup on home turf when MS Dhoni’s troops defeated Sri Lanka in the final in 2011 while Australia and England then followed the success story in 2015 and 2019 respectively.</p>
