Ahead of the first ODI against Australia in Sydney, Indian skipper Virat Kohli on Thursday said that there has been confusion and lack of clarity on the status of Rohit Sharma’s hamstring injury while adding he has no idea why Rohit didn’t travel with the squad to Australia.

Answering a virtual press conference ahead of the ODI series versus Australia, Kohli said Rohit was said to be unavailable before the selection committee met earlier in November.

"Before the selection meeting, we got a mail that he is unavailable, that he has picked up an injury during the IPL. It said that the pros and cons of the injury were explained to him and he understood and he was unavailable," Kohli said.&nbsp;

Reportedly, Rohit is still three weeks away from full match fitness but a 14-day hard quarantine – without training – would rule him out of the four-match Test series, starting December 17 in Adelaide.

Kohli said that he thought Rohit be on the flight to Australia after he played the last three matches of Indian Premier League 2020 but added that the Indian team had no information on why he wasn’t travelling with the Indian contingent.

The Indian duo of Rohit and Ishant need quarantine relaxation if they are to be part of the four-match Test series against Australia, starting December 17.

Speaking to ANI, sources said that Ganguly will try and find a solution to the issue related to Rohit and Ishant after discussion with Cricket Australia. Both Rohit and Ishant are undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru with an eye on the four-match Test series.

The rest of the Indian cricketers were allowed to train during the quarantine period because they moved from one bubble - in Dubai - to the other - in Sydney. So, relaxation will be needed if the two are to be a part of the Test series," the source explained.&nbsp;

Australia batsman Steve Smith says a training breakthrough during a stint in isolation has helped him find his hands again and he is confident his Indian Premier League struggles are behind him as he prepares to face India on Friday.

Smith had a relatively quiet IPL in the United Arab Emirates, scoring 311 runs at 25.91 in 14 matches. He averaged 41.40 in the previous three years of the tournament.

The 31-year-old said he had hardly picked up a bat during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic and then struggled on Australia’s limited overs tour of England, where he scored 31 runs in three Twenty20 innings.

Smith’s batting woes were a major concern for Australia, who are set to face India in six limited overs matches before the mouth-watering test series.

But back in isolation in Sydney after returning from the UAE, Smith said he felt like he had found his rhythm and was striking the ball better and able to place it where he wanted.

“The past few days I have found something ... I have found my hands which I am extremely excited about,” Smith told reporters on Tuesday.

“It’s just getting that feel of the bat behind my toe the right way, the way my hands come up the bat.

“But it just hasn’t quite been right until two days ago. I found a little something and everything just clicked in.

“I had a big smile on my face after training the other day.”

The smile will no doubt spread to the faces of Australian fans if Smith has indeed rediscovered his form.

He averages 84.05 against India in tests and 60.46 in one-day internationals. The last time Smith said he had “found his hands” was ahead of the 2017/18 Ashes test series, where he tore apart England’s attack for 687 runs at 137.40.

“In big series I try and stand up and get the best out of myself,” Smith said.

“Whether there is something more inside me that comes out, I’m not sure.”

'Retro' jersey and customised PPE kits - 'New look' Team India all set for Australia tour

India are set to take on Australia in three ODIs, as many T20Is and four Test matches in what promises to be a blockbuster series. With the first ODI taking place in Sydney on Friday, the anticipation and hype around the series are unparalleled. Former Australian captain Michael Clarke feels Australia will defeat India 4-0 in the Test series if the Men in Blue fail in the white-ball series.

According to Clarke, Indian captain Virat Kohli has to set the momentum in the ODIs and T20Is or else India will fail to win even a single Test Down Under.&nbsp;

“These one-dayers and these Twenty20s is where Virat Kohli can really stand up and lead from the front. I think the tone he sets with this team will play a big role when he leaves, after the first Test match,” Clarke said on ‘Sky Sports Radio’ on Tuesday.

“He‘s quick, he’s got a really different action, so I think he needs to set the tone and be really aggressive to the Australian batters. Even to someone like Steve Smith, he’s got to use that short ball consistently and regularly, as Jofra Archer did to Steve Smith in the Ashes,” Clarke further said.

Veteran Australian spinner Nathan Lyon feels Virat Kohli’s absence in the last three Tests of the upcoming four-match Test series against India won’t make Australia favourites to lift the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as he said that India boast a lot of ‘superstars’ in the team.

India’s tour of Australia, comprising of three ODIs, as many T20Is and four Test matches, begins on November 27. The much-awaited four-match Test series starts on December 17 with a day-night match in Adelaide.

The Indian cricket team on Thursday arrived in Sydney for a gruelling two-month Australia tour that starts with a 14-day quarantine-cum –training phase. Virat Kohli-led Team India along with Australian superstars such as David Warner, Steve Smith, Pat Cummins among others arrived late in the afternoon and were taken to the Sydney Olympic Park.

The New South Wales government has allowed the Indian team to train during the two-week quarantine phase and their session will be conducted at the Blacktown International Sports Park.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli is set to return home after the first Test in Adelaide for the birth of his first child. He is also set to get special treatment during the quarantine period, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph.

The base for rugby side New South Wales Blues – the Pullman Hotel – will be the base for the Men in Blue.

AUS vs IND: Team India to start training in Sydney from November 10

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to announce the Indian squad for the upcoming tour of Australia by the end of this week, which will have three T20Is, as many ODIs and four Test matches, with as many as 32 players likely to be named for the full-fledged series between the two top sides.

The Sunil Joshi-led Indian selection committee will pick a jumbo squad given the COVID-19 pandemic and keeping injuries in mind.&nbsp; 
With India’ tour of Australia set to last for two months, calling players from outside the bio-secure bubble could lead to complications and hence, a mega squad will be announced comprising of a squad for all three formats.&nbsp;

“They (selection committee) have been told to pick as large a squad as they want. We want back-up players ready and in Australia right through the tour. If a player gets injured, there shouldn’t be a situation where we have to call for a player from India," a BCCI official was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

A reason behind a jumbo squad is that players will be able to play intra-team practice games ahead of the main tour.&nbsp; 
However, the dates for the matches haven’t been finalised yet and Adelaide will host the first, as per BCCI president Sourav Ganguly.

Former speed merchant Brett Lee reckons Australia's pace triumvirate would hold the key during the year-end home Test series against India and is keen to figure out how much the kookaburra ball swings without saliva Down Under.

With the ban on saliva due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the world's fastest bowlers wants the custodians of the game to come up with an "artificial substance" to maintain the balance between bat and ball.

"Playing at home obviously gives you that advantage, but that said I know that India will pack a full strength squad to tour Australia. I still believe if Australia is to win our bowlers hold the key," Lee told PTI in an exclusive interview.

The kookaburra seam is not as pronounced as Dukes or SG Tests balls and the flattening of seam coupled with ban on saliva will make it harder for bowlers of both teams.

"It will definitely change the way the game is played so we don't want to make it even harder for bowlers even more than it is currently is," said the 43-year-old Lee.

India's pace attack, which has been phenomenal in the past three years, has the capability of "knocking over any top order" in world cricket but it will again boil down to how much the ball swings.

"India have got some extremely good pace bowlers that are capable of knocking over any top order. Once again I think it comes down to how the ball will swing or not swing in different conditions (Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney)."

And that is precisely the reason why Lee won't mind if an artificial substance is allowed even though his answer to whether ball tampering should be legalised was an emphatic no.

"Essentially you do need saliva to keep the new ball shiny and also the old ball to reverse swing. Usually (fast bowlers) use less saliva on a new ball compared to the old one.

"Maybe they need to come up with some artificial substance that they can use," the holder of 310 Test wickets asserted.

The best part about Australian cricket teams have been their iconic captains who have set benchmarks, said Lee.

"Yes Australia have had some wonderful leaders which involves set the tone for the generations to follow. I was very lucky to play under two of my favourites in Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting," said Lee, referring to the likes of Ian Chappell, Allan Border and Mark Taylor who preceded them.

Does he feel that Tim Paine can earn the same kind of respect consistently in a change room that has powerhouse performers like Steve Smith and David Warner.

"I think Tim Paine has done a tremendous job and should be complimented for the way that he has led the side. Keeping in mind he's had a few dramas to deal with, he's still the right man for the job," Lee said.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, all cricket boards are going through financial stress and Cricket Australia is no different.

The speedster hoped that some normalcy will return in future.

"As any person in the workforce any time there is a pay cut that it definitely will affect them. Let's hope we get back to some form of normality as soon as possible."

Lee had watched the first Test between England and West Indies in Southampton and was very impressed with Caribbean skipper Jason Holder's performance in the first innings.

"There has been some wonderful performances by bowlers of both teams. In particular the skipper from the West Indies. Just goes to show that line length is so important."

Warner, a lynchpin of Australia's batting attack, said he is looking forward to the confrontation but that he will steer clear of taunting India's captain.

"I thrive on the crowd, I thrive on people sort of going at me in the field. And getting into that battle," Warner told India Today television.

"I think Virat is quite similar, if you go a little bit at Virat he comes out harder with the bat and he plays amazing. We have seen that time and time again.

"There is no point in actually trying to poke the bear because at the end of the day if you do that it just fires up the person a bit more."

Last year India claimed their first Test series win in Australia after 71 years of trying.

Warner, who along with Steve Smith missed the series while they served a ball-tampering ban, said Australia are much better prepared this time.

"It's a much-anticipated return to Australia for India. I am excited, one to be selected and to be a part of that. Last time we were not bad but were beaten by a good team and their bowling was relentless," said Warner.

"Now, India has got the best batting line-up and our bowlers will like to target them."

Warner said he's also keen to play the lucrative Indian Premier League if the International Cricket Council postpones the T20 World Cup, scheduled to start October 18 in Australia.

The fate of the T20 showpiece will be decided next month and if the World Cup is sidelined, the delayed IPL could take its place. Cricket Australia has admitted the World Cup looks "unrealistic" this year as the pandemic lingers.

Warner, who is captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, said quarantine rules for foreigners entering Australia was one of many problems for the World Cup.

"The challenges around getting every single nation that participates in the World Cup into Australia, given the fact that we have the quarantine for 14 days... we have to obviously abide by those rules and obviously we await the decision from the ICC," Warner said.

He added: "I am definitely sure and positive that we (Australian players) will be able to come and play in the IPL if that replaces the World Cup schedule."
