She knows with all her might that the relationship is hanging by a thread, yet, before exhibiting her first-ever act of bravery--of leaving the man she bore a kid with--Mira has to wrestle with her demons: "If I don’t leave now, I might never."</p>

There are no other characters that are introduced apart from these two. But, who cares? Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain are so&nbsp;taut as Jonathan and Mira that the monotony of each scene does not squish the purity of the emotions felt. If anything, they act as elevators.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Science-fiction author Arthur Clarke once decreed that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. At the core of “Foundation,” the Apple TV+ series based on the novels of Isaac Asimov, is a similar idea: that any sufficiently advanced math is indistinguishable from prophecy.</p>

But in this ambitious, overstuffed epic, that intriguing idea often gets lost in space. Like Trantor, the imperial capital in “Foundation” whose surface is buried beneath human-made layers, the story’s core ends up enveloped in levels upon levels of machinery.</p>

The instigating figure remains the same as in the saga that Asimov began spinning in the 1940s: Hari Seldon (Jared Harris), a “psychohistorian” who purports to be able to predict the future by number-crunching the data on mass populations. (He is the Nate Silver of space.) When his calculations determine that the ruling empire will collapse, the bearer of bad news and his followers are exiled to a planet in the dusty, cheap seats of the galaxy, where they work on a grand plan to shape humanity’s fate and shorten the coming era of chaos.</p>

At a time when “follow the science” has become a political statement, “Foundation” can play like a none-too-subtle commentary. Hari’s protege, Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell), comes from a world whose leaders condemn scientists as heretics and refuse to acknowledge the rising of the oceans. And Harris plays the visionary with a doomed-prophet rectitude that recalls his turn as a Soviet scientist in “Chernobyl.”</p>

<p><br />
This echoes the Asimov books’ atom-age belief in the power of reason over superstition. But the “Foundation” showrunner David Goyer is also willing to depart from the source material. Asimov’s galaxy was largely a boys club, for instance, so “Foundation” recasts key roles with women, including Gaal — as close to a central figure as the series has, although she is sidelined in the middle of the season — and Salvor Hardin (Leah Harvey), a leader of the Foundation’s remote colony.</p>

<p><br />
Elsewhere, the series adds or shuffles story elements to create the kind of baroque intrigues viewers are used to from the likes of “Game of Thrones.” The role of the emperor is expanded — to be precise, it is tripled. In the empire’s “genetic dynasty,” Emperor Cleon (conveniently an anagram for “clone”) has been replicated for centuries in three persons: young Brother Dawn, middle-aged Brother Day and elderly Brother Dusk.</p>

<p><br />
Every generation, the eldest member of this living Sphinx riddle is ceremonially (and lethally) retired, a fresh baby emperor is uncorked from the cloning vat, Dawn is promoted to Day and Day to Dusk. (I told you there would be math.)</p>

<p><br />
Lee Pace, sheathed in electric-blue gladiator armor, plays a succession of Brother Days. His matinee-villain hauteur risks ridiculousness — say, when having an underling exploded like Creosote in “Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life” — but he energizes an often-stilted production.</p>

<p><br />
In a way, the genetic dynasty and the Foundation are two solutions to the same dilemma: How do you achieve ambitions that take longer to realize than a human life span? For Cleon, the answer is to live serially. For Hari, it is to craft a plan that will outlive him, in part by creating a quasimessianic myth around himself. (Dealing with mortality is also the project of religion, yet another story thread in the series.)</p>

<p><br />
But this is also the challenge of “Foundation” itself. Its premise and Asimov’s blueprint suggest a story that needs to unfold over centuries, shuffling cast members in and out, focusing more on larger systems of society than on individuals. Serial TV, on the other hand, relies on audiences connecting to specific characters over the long haul.<br />
The cloning device is one way to keep characters around over the ages; there are more spoilery contrivances, too. Other changes Goyer makes serve to translate Asimov’s talky novels of ideas into a pageant of explosions and special effects.</p>

<p><br />
For instance, much of the 10-episode first season gets bogged down in an extended terrorism and revenge story that makes Salvor into an action hero. The thriller sequences — involving an enemy straight out of the Klingon-Dothraki warrior-society school — most resemble what viewers expect from a sci-fi epic. And I found myself increasingly tuning them out the longer “Foundation” went on.</p>

<p><br />
The images are certainly arresting. There are spacecraft with interiors like art installations; alien worlds with beringed and bemooned skyscapes; and some sort of mysterious giant lozenge that floats near the Foundation camp like a portentous piñata, promising to burst open and spill forth plot twists and dei ex machina.</p>

But there are things you can’t digitize: a surprise, a genuine laugh, the breath of creative life. Beneath the gunplay and computer-generated imagery, there’s a much weirder show struggling to get out, about statistics and space popes, decadent clone emperors and millennia-old robots.</p>

OK, there is only one robot, but “Foundation” makes her count. As the undying aide to a long line of emperors, Demerzel (the name will ring a bell for hard-core Asimov fans), Finnish actress Laura Birn gives an eccentric performance that is both disconcertingly mechanical and the most vulnerably human of the series.</p>

<p><br />
This and some of the odder inventions of “Foundation” reminded me stylistically of last year’s “Raised by Wolves,” the HBO Max drama of obsessive android maternal love. It was hardly the best show of 2020, but it was so committed to its passion, so willing to cut open a vein and bleed weird robot milk, that I was held rapt even by its worst moments.</p>

“Foundation” is more consistent than “Wolves,” but less magnetic because of its concessions to sci-fi expectations. It could have been better, if only, like Hari Seldon’s disciples, it had faith in the plan.</p>

In the empire’s “genetic dynasty,” Emperor Cleon (conveniently an anagram for “clone”) has been replicated for centuries in three persons: young Brother Dawn, middle-aged Brother Day and elderly Brother Dusk. Every generation, the eldest member of this living Sphinx riddle is ceremonially (and lethally) retired, a fresh baby emperor is uncorked from the cloning vat, Dawn is promoted to Day and Day to Dusk. (I told you there would be math.) Lee Pace, sheathed in electric-blue gladiator armor, plays a succession of Brother Days. His matinee-villain hauteur risks ridiculousness — say, when having an underling exploded like Creosote in “Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life” — but he energizes an often-stilted production. In a way, the genetic dynasty and the Foundation are two solutions to the same dilemma: How do you achieve ambitions that take longer to realize than a human life span? For Cleon, the answer is to live serially. For Hari, it is to craft a plan that will outlive him, in part by creating a quasimessianic myth around himself. (Dealing with mortality is also the project of religion, yet another story thread in the series.) But this is also the challenge of “Foundation” itself. Its premise and Asimov’s blueprint suggest a story that needs to unfold over centuries, shuffling cast members in and out, focusing more on larger systems of society than on individuals. Serial TV, on the other hand, relies on audiences connecting to specific characters over the long haul. The cloning device is one way to keep characters around over the ages; there are more spoilery contrivances, too. Other changes Goyer makes serve to translate Asimov’s talky novels of ideas into a pageant of explosions and special effects. For instance, much of the 10-episode first season gets bogged down in an extended terrorism and revenge story that makes Salvor into an action hero. The thriller sequences — involving an enemy straight out of the Klingon-Dothraki warrior-society school — most resemble what viewers expect from a sci-fi epic. And I found myself increasingly tuning them out the longer “Foundation” went on. The images are certainly arresting. There are spacecraft with interiors like art installations; alien worlds with beringed and bemooned skyscapes; and some sort of mysterious giant lozenge that floats near the Foundation camp like a portentous piñata, promising to burst open and spill forth plot twists and dei ex machina. But there are things you can’t digitize: a surprise, a genuine laugh, the breath of creative life. Beneath the gunplay and computer-generated imagery, there’s a much weirder show struggling to get out, about statistics and space popes, decadent clone emperors and millennia-old robots. OK, there is only one robot, but “Foundation” makes her count. As the undying aide to a long line of emperors, Demerzel (the name will ring a bell for hard-core Asimov fans), Finnish actress Laura Birn gives an eccentric performance that is both disconcertingly mechanical and the most vulnerably human of the series. This and some of the odder inventions of “Foundation” reminded me stylistically of last year’s “Raised by Wolves,” the HBO Max drama of obsessive android maternal love. It was hardly the best show of 2020, but it was so committed to its passion, so willing to cut open a vein and bleed weird robot milk, that I was held rapt even by its worst moments. “Foundation” is more consistent than “Wolves,” but less magnetic because of its concessions to sci-fi expectations. It could have been better, if only, like Hari Seldon’s disciples, it had faith in the plan.

Joe and I talked a lot about that, pitched some ideas, bounced them around, and I'm just excited for the challenge," said the director.</p>

<p>Global video-streaming giant Netflix has reportedly acquired the works of Roald Dahl: the renowned author of children books that included 'Matilda', 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' among others.</p>

<p>The deal finalised by Netflix--touted to be its biggest deal till date--has an agreement with the Roald Dahl Story Company (RDSC) to license 16 titles in total and will help stay ahead in the game that involves rivals like Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and HBO Max.</p>

As per reports, Netflix’s production budget for this deal is one billion that also covers 'Jojo Rabbit' director Taika Waititi's TV series based on 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' as well as an adaptation of 'Matilda the Musical'.<br />
"These projects opened our eyes to a much more ambitious venture. The creation of a unique universe across animated and live-action films and TV, publishing, games, immersive experiences, live theatre consumer products and more," Netflix reportedly said.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The Roald Dahl estate-deal is being perceived as a huge boost to Netflix's growth as the author's books have been translated into 63 languages and sold more than 300m copies worldwide.</p>

We believe being part of a larger company will give us the additional support to continue in that mission. Netflix has agreed to acquire RDSC in a transaction that will build on the success that we have achieved in recent years."</p>

Kelly also went on to add that Dahl’s books is sold every 2.6 seconds, and the company had plans in place for 19 TV shows, films, stage shows and live experiences, reports claim.</p>

While Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical, black-and-white drama 'Belfast' took home the TIFF People’s Choice Award, Jessica Chastain ('The Eyes of Tammy Faye') and Benedict Cumberbatch ('The Power of the Dog', 'The Electrical Life of Louis Wain') won the coveted TIFF Tribute Awards, which wrapped its 46th edition of the festival last Saturday night.

TIFF's Ebert Director Award was bagged by 'Dune' helmer Denis Villeneuve. "2021 brought an exceptional selection of films that excited Festival audiences around the world. Our lineup showcased beloved auteurs alongside fresh voices in filmmaking, including numerous women powerhouses. TIFF welcomed guests, press, industry, international stars and directors back to the city and into cinemas. Noah Jupe, Jaeden Martell to feature in new 'Lost Boys' movie

<p>Nickelodeon star Drake Bell, who was sentenced to two years of probation and community service in July of 2021 after pleading guilty to charges related to his online conduct with an underaged fan, has spoken about the details of his case.&nbsp;</p>

<p><br />
He shared a video on his Instagram handle, clarifying the claims that have been revolving around him this past year before explaining the reason behind his guilty plea.&nbsp;</p>

<p><br />
Through the video, Bell revealed that he has neither changed his last name or moved to Mexico. He also said that he has not become a resident or citizen of Mexico regardless of what the rumour mill says.</p>

<p>Talking about his case, Bell said, "... (The Case) moved very quickly for you, but for me, it's been a three-year, thorough investigation into every false claim that has been made."</p>

"It's not me telling you that the claims are false, but the state of Ohio has proven claims to be false. If these claims were remotely true, my situation would be very different. I would not be here at home with my wife and my son," he continued.</p>

<p><br />
As per the Hollywood Reporter, in July, Drake Bell was sentenced to two years of probation and 200 hours of community service on child endangerment charges for his alleged conduct with a young fan, whom he met online and then in person, which reportedly went on for years.</p>

<p><br />
In October of 2018, Cleveland authorities say, the victim--who was 19 at the time of Bell's sentencing--contacted the Toronto Police, who in turn, shared their findings pertaining to the case that prompted in further investigation.</p>

<p><br />
The victim stated that Bell began contacting her through an online chat platform when she was 12, and their communications escalated to exchanges that turned "blatantly sexual" by the time she was 15, according to The Hollywood Reporter.</p>

<p>The victim, who called Bell a 'pedophile' during his July hearing in Cleveland, said that the two had exchanged sexually charged photos and engaged in sexual conduct with her many times, including at a 2017 concert venue in Cleveland and also at a hotel.</p>

In his video, Bell stated that he is 'not perfect' and 'made mistakes' and called his behaviour 'reckless and irresponsible'. But, he disputed that he had maintained communication with the victim over a long period of time or had knowledge of who she was during their in-person encounters.</p>

<p><br />
Bell said, "I responded to a fan whose age I didn't know. When I became aware of their age, all conversation and communication stopped. This individual continued to come to shows and pay for meet-and-greets, and although I was unaware that this was the same person I was communicating with online, that's what I pled guilty to."</p>

<p><br />
Initially, Bell had pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him but eventually entered a plea deal with the prosecutors. He was convicted in June of felony attempted child endangerment, with a misdemeanour charge of disseminating matter harmful to juveniles.</p>

<p><br />
The attempted endangerment charge is related to the concert, where Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office spokesperson Tyler Sinclair stated Bell 'violated his duty of care' and put the victim in harm's way. The disseminating matter charge was about his 'inappropriate social media messages', as per Sinclair.</p>

<p><br />
"I want to make clear that there were no sexual images, nothing physical between me and this individual. I was not charged with anything physical. I was not charged with the disseminating of photographs or images or anything like that. This is strictly over text messages," Bell said in his video.</p>

<p><br />
"When I was presented with a plea deal because of the messages, I felt that it was the best way to get this over quickly and for everybody involved to be able to move on and for me to get back to doing what I love," he further added.</p>

<p><br />
Drake Bell concluded his video message by thanking fans for doing their own research and standing by him.</p>
