The T20 World Cup 2022 edition is set to get underway on October 16. While all the major teams are finalishing their team combination. the lowly-ranked sides are set to lock horns in the qualifying round which kicks off on Sunday. The qualifiers will see previous winners West Indies (two-time champions) and Sri Lanka (who won the elusive cup in 2014) as they will fight hard with the other teams to book a place in the main draw of the competition, which starts on October 22.

Ahead of the qualifiers, Universe Boss Chris Gayle made a bold claim. Speaking to Dainik Jagran, the 43-year-old predicted the T20 World Cup finalists. He said, "I think there could be a final match between West Indies and Australia. Yes, it is definitely that the players who are included in the West Indies team are talented and can prove to be dangerous for any team. As everyone knows it is just a matter of adapting your strategy in the right way on match day. I hope the team plays well," Gayle added.

Many former cricketers and experts of the game have shared their predictions in the run-up to the eighth edition of the T20 World Cup, ot be held in Australia. Most have put India, Australia, South Africa, England and Pakistan as the top contenders for the elusive title. For Nicholas Pooran-led Windies to do well, they will first need to get going from the word go in the qualifiers and then remain consistent against the big sides in the main draw of the competition.

In last year's T20 WC, Kieron Pollard-led West Indies had qualified for the main round but faltered against big teams to bow out in the Super 12. While the big names like Pollard, Sunil Narine, Gayle, Dwayne Bravo have been replaced, the two-time winners still have a lot of firepower with Rovman Powell, Brandon King, Shamarh Brooks, Evin Lewis, Kyle Mayers, Jason Holder, Sheldon Cottrell, Obed McCoy, Alzarri Joseph. Will Pooran & Co. go the distance and return with the title this time around? Only time will tell...

T20 World Cup: Not India, Pakistan or England! Chris Gayle predicts finalists for mega event

The T20 World Cup 2022 edition is just a few days away. The eighth edition of the mega event will be held in Australia and will kick off with the qualifying round. Four teams, from the qualifiers, will then join the top eight sides in the Super 12 round (in two groups of six each).

Before the commencement of the showpiece event, former cricketers and experts of the game are picking their favourites for the coveted title. Rohit Sharma-led India, who are the No. 1 ranked side in the format, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan and England are some serious contenders whereas other teams can also not be taken lightly as the margin of error is very small in the shorest format.

Ahead of the T20 WC, Aussie great Michael Bevan picked his favourites. "I reckon I would have to say India, England and Australia. I think that the pick of the teams at the moment are probably India and England. But Australia have some amazing players, some super talented players and, when it clicks for them, it clicks and they are plenty good enough to take off (win) consecutive World Cups," Bevan told SkySports.

"And, given the home ground advantage (for Australia), it should help a little bit as well. I think they would have to be my top three at this stage," the two-time ODI World Cup winner added.

In last year's edition, Aaron Finch-led Australia won the title for the first time after beating New Zealand by eight wickets at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. It will be interesting to see which side walks away with the championship this time around.

India, Australia, England or Pakistan? Aussie great picks his favourites for T20 World Cup

England batter Jonny Bairstow has provided an update on his recovery after undergoing surgery following a freak injury he suffered earlier this year. Bairstow also went on to reveal the extent of his injury, which ended his hopes of playing in the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia this month.

The England batter had suffered a freak injury while playing golf which ruled him out of the T20 World Cup. He revealed he had a broken fibula in three places and also dislocated his ankle. Bairstow needed to undergo surgery and is currently on the path of recovery, three weeks since the operation.

"Hello everyoneI am just writing this to give you all an update on my injury and progress. The actual injury was as such a broken fibula in 3 places which required a plate, I dislocated my ankle which in turn meant I did my syndesmosis joint and lateral ligament along with a couple more bits. All in all I have done a proper job on it," Bairstow wrote in a post on Instagram while sharing pictures of his injured leg.

Jos Buttler-less England won the seven-match T20I series versus hosts Babar Azam-led Pakistan on Sunday evening (October 2) in Lahore. In a series which saw the momentum being shifted from one side to the other, Moeen Ali-led England came from behind, trailing 2-3, to win 4-3 with a stunnnig 67-run win in the series finale on Sunday.

Being asked to bat first, Moeen & Co. posted a mammoth 209 for 3, riding on Dawid Malan's 47-ball 78 and handy contributions from other batters. In reply, Babar and Md Rizwan -- the No. 1 T20I batter -- couldn't do much and got perished soon. Shan Masood's 56 was the only shining aspect for the Men in Green as they were restrcted for a modest 148 for 8 to lose by a convincing margin.

After the clash, the stand-in captain lauded his side for putting up a team effort in the series decider but refrained from calling England the favourites heading into the T20 World Cup, in Australia from October 16. "We're really happy to win this series and we go to Australia in a really good position, but I don't think we're favourites for the World Cup. If I'm honest, I don't feel that way at all, but I know we are a very dangerous team to play and other teams will fear playing us. But I still think Australia and India are the two favourites," said Ali.

On the series win, the all-rounder said, "Brilliant game from us, we played well from the start. I thought our bowling was outstanding. Throughout the series, we bowled really well. Also, it shows the depth we have in our squad. Just want to say thank you to everyone, and the PCB for looking after us."

Many former cricketers and experts feel India and Australia are one of the strongest sides heading into the T20 WC Down Under. Both are placed in different groups in the Super 12 but are expected to meet in the semi-finals or the final.

Many experts and former cricketers have shared their predictions for the forthcoming ICC event. India, Australia, Pakistan, South Africa and England are one of the strongest sides but one cannot write off the other teams as the shortest format has enough ebbs and flows and, hence, any team can get the better of the other on a given day.

Talking about Team India's preparations, Rohit Sharma & Co. have been on a winning spree in the format in the ongoing calendar year. Barring a disappointing run in Asia Cup 2022 edition, Men in Blue have done very well and will enter the tournament as a strong contender.

Rohit-starrer India failed to get past the Super 12 round in last year's edition, however, will be eager to go the distance this time around and win the trophy for the second time, after the 2007 edition.

Prize money for T20 World Cup: Full list out! Winner to walk away with a WHOPPING sum

Led by Harmanpreet Kaur`s fifth ODI century, India women`s cricket team defeated England by 88 runs in the second ODI at the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury to clinch their maiden limited overs series in the country in 23 years. The Indian skipper registered her second-highest ODI score — an unbeaten 111-ball 143, an innings which included 18 boundaries and four sixes. Harmanpreet's master class hundred powered India to post their all-time second-highest total of 333/5, after being put into bat on September 21. England were in control till the end of 40 overs, but a late surge by India turned into a nightmare for England's young bowling attack.

England got an early breakthrough as Kate Cross cleaned up Shafali Verma cheaply for eight. But Smriti Mandhana and No.3 Yastika Bhatia were quick in recovery. Mandhana didn't hold back on the attack. The southpaw crunched four boundaries and a six and even crossed the 3000 ODI-run mark en route her knock of 40 before she was trapped leg before by Sophie Ecclestone's left-arm spin. She, however, had steadied the innings with two handy partnerships in the company of Yastika Bhatia and Harmanpreet.

At 99 for 3, India still had a lot of build on, and the Indian skipper ensured the momentum wasn't handed over to the hosts. In the company of Harleen Deol, she added 113 runs for the fourth wicket. Lauren Bell got the much-needed breakthrough in the 40th over before witnessing as well as being on the receiving end of Harmanpreet's ballistic onslaught.

In the final 10 overs, India added 121 runs, with Harmanpreet hitting 43 runs in just 11 balls to remain unbeaten on 143. In response, England were dented early in the chase - this time courtesy Harmanpreet's direct throw which found Tammy Beaumont short in her attempted single. Soon enough, Renuka Singh knocked off Sophia Dunkley's offstump with an incoming delivery to leave the hosts down on 12 for 2 in the fourth over.

Alice Capsey's counter attack helped England pull themselves back from a poor position, but Indian bowlers kept chipping in with wickets quickly. Emma Lamb was trapped leg before by another incoming delivery from Renuka in the eighth over to help India keep control of the proceedings.

With victory firmly in sight, Harleen, D Hemalatha and Shafali also rolled their arms over for a few overs, and combined to return with three wickets in 32 balls as England were bundled out for 245.

Brief Scores: India 333/5 in 50 overs (Harmanpreet Kaur 143 not out, Harleen Deol 58; Charlotte Dean 1-39, Sophie Ecclestone 1-64) beat England 245 in 44.2 overs (Danielle Wyatt 65, Alice Capsey 39; Renuka Singh 4-57, D Hemalatha 2-6) by 88 runs

England rope in Michael Hussey and David Saker as coaches ahead of T20 World Cup 2022

England's Test head coach Brendon McCullum has revealed he was not ready to take the job when it was first offered to him but is now enjoying his stint with the team. England's Test performances have improved massively under his guidance and the team is yet to lose a Test series under him.

McCullum was serving as the head coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when he was offered the England job last year. The former New Zealand captain decided to leave KKR and give his nod for the challenging position.

He has since instilled a new belief in the England Test side with a new captain in Ben Stokes and they have played some terrific cricket in the longest format. England defeated South Africa by nine wickets in the third and final Test between the two sides on Monday to clinch the three-match series 2-1 and extend their unbeaten run.

"Well, I didn't actually want the [England] job! But now I've got it, I'm loving it! Absolutely I am, and it's certainly different to what I've ever done before," McCullum said following the conclusion of the third Test between England and South Africa.

"I'm loving the opportunity to work with some of the best players in the world. I always looked at English cricket and thought there was an immense amount of talent. I didn't quite realise how much talent there is and how good these guys are and the way they think about the game," he added.

England's Test captain Ben Stokes has revealed he needs anxiety drugs to deal with his mental health issues after his father's death. Stokes' father passed away due to terminal cancer in December 2020 and the cricketer has since struggled to cope with the personal loss.

Stokes has been quite vocal about his mental health issues in the past and had also opted for a break from cricket last year to focus on his mental health. The England all-rounder revealed he suffered a series of panic attacks following his father's demise and had to take medication to deal with his anxiety.

"I never thought I would be on medication to help me for that kind of stuff. I am not embarrassed or ashamed to say it because I needed the help at the time," Stokes said in an Amazon documentary, set to release on Friday (August 26).

"But it's not done just because I'm back playing. I still speak to the doc, but not as regularly, and I'm still taking medication every day. It's an ongoing process," he added.

He returned to action during the Ashes 2021-22 against Australia Down under and was recently promoted as England's Test captain after Joe Root stepped down from his post.

Stokes said he had opted for the break as he was angry on the game which had started dictating when he can see his ailing father. "So I had a real thing with cricket at the time I took a break. I was really angry at the sport because it was dictating when I could see my dad," Stokes told The Telegraph.

Ben Stokes remains a vital cog for England in Tests and T20Is, after retiring from ODI cricket last month. Stokes, the English Test team, often remains in the headlines and had made heads turn for all the wrong reasons in late 2017 when he was involved in a Bristol nightclub brawl.

The incident took place just before the then Joe Root-led England's Ashes 2017 versus Australia Down Under. The 31-year-old Stokes was back then alleged of knocking down a person unconscious outside a nightclub in Bristol. This led to the star cricketer being banned for eight matches and he even missed a Test match in the following year, versus Virat Kohli's India, to attend a trial of his case.

Later, the Bristol Crown Court found him not guilty and, hence, Stokes resumed his services for England cricket team and was even adjudged the Player-of-the-Match in Eoin Morgan & Co.'s famous 2019 ODI World Cup final win over New Zealand, at Lord's. Thus, he redeemed himself successfully and has moved on from the infamous incident. Nonetheless, Stokes recalled the incident once again and shared the impact it has had on his family.

"My wife Clare makes a great point of saying that just because when the verdict came in, don't assume that was the end of that incident. That Bristol incident will still have an effect on my life and on our lives in the future. Just an example - we're going to have to sit our kids down one day and explain what that was all about,” Stokes told the BBC.

"As they get older, no doubt people will ask them about it and we don't want them to be in the dark about that and then to come home and ask about it," the England Test skipper added.

Stokes-led England are currently involved in a three-match Test series versus visitors Dean Elgar-led South Africa. England lost the first Test by a whopping an innings and 12 runs and will need to regroup to keep the series alive in the second and penultimate Test, which gets underway on August 25 at Old Trafford, Manchester.

'We don't want our kids...' - England Test captain Ben Stokes recalls Bristol nightclub brawl

England Test captain Ben Stokes opened up on his 'rivalry' with Virat Kohli and said they might have a go against each other on the field but remain good friends off it. Stokes and Kohli share a great mutual respect for each other and have been driving forces in their respective teams when it comes to Test cricket.

While there is no doubting Kohli's passion for Test cricket, Stokes has been instrumental in England's revival in the longest format. Stokes and Kohli are two of the best in the present era and have enjoyed some fierce duels against each other over the years.

The duo was involved in some heated exchanges when India locked horns with England in the one-off fifth Test in Birmingham earlier this year. However, when Stokes later announced his retirement from ODIs, Kohli was one of the first cricketers to send him a message and called him 'the most competitive bloke' he has played against.

Sharing an insight into the bond he shares with the former India captain, Stokes said he and Kohli haven't come up against each other much but the duo know how to leave behind their animosity on the pitch and not let it affect their relationship off the field.

"To be honest, Virat and I don't really come across each other that much. We've played Test cricket against each other and in IPL. In the time that we have spent together, albeit very small, it's fine. When you're out on the field, it's me against the opposition or it's me against an individual. You've got to separate the two - the on-field competition and off it.

"It's not a case of where we are little children and when if we do have a bit of a go at each other on the field, as soon as we are off it, it's just back to two individuals who are in the same room together, and it's fine," Stokes told Hindustan Times.

The England all-rounder then went on to compare his rivalry with Kohli to that of tennis stars Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios, who remain good friends off the field despite sharing an intense rivalry on the court. Djokovic and Kyrgios had agreed to have dinner together after the final of Wimbledon 2022 where the Serbian ace defeated the Aussie to clinch his 21st Grand Slam title.

"Look, sport produces amazing contests not only between teams but you also have those battles and contests between individuals. But at the end of the day, there is always respect between oppositions, between individuals, and it's just in our sports," said Stokes.

"Just an example - you look at Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios. They have obviously had a huge rivalry but still at the end of the day, there is always that respect there between the two professional athletes. That's the same for us and through sports.

You are always going to have a battle and trying your hardest to win a game. But when it comes to the end of it, there is always that respect and that's what great about sport. One sportsman respects the other," he explained.

England's Test head coach Brendon McCullum said the hosts were a bit timid in their approach after their shambolic defeat against South Africa in the first Test at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground. South Africa thrashed England by an innings and 12 runs while wrapping up the game inside just three days to take a 1-0 lead in the 3-match Test series.

McCullum credited South Africa for playing outstanding cricket in the game while insisting England didn't play poorly at Lord's despite the hosts being completely outplayed at Lord's. The England Test coach argued the hosts can't become a bad team in a matter of few days and there were areas they would like to improve.

"I thought South Africa played exceptionally well, they utilised the conditions that they were presented with and they deserved the victory," McCullum said after South Africa's comprehensive victory in the series-opener at Lord's.

"We've got a little bit of work to do but you don't go from being a good cricket team a few weeks ago to a bad team overnight so we'll try and maintain some of those positives and the beauty is we get an opportunity to come back in a few days' time," he added.

South Africa dominated the proceedings in the Test match from the word go as Kagiso Rabada ran riot with a five-wicket haul to dismantle England in their first innings. Thanks to Rabada's sensational spell, South Africa bundled out England for a paltry 165. In reply, the visitors rose on Sarel Erwee's brilliant 73 to post 326 runs on the board in their first innings and take a healthy lead.

South African pacers continued their red-hot form in England's second innings as Rabada and Anrich Nortje picked up five wickets between them to skittle out the hosts for 149 runs and secure a thumping win for South Africa by an innings and 12 runs.

When asked if their fresh aggressive approach, which has been labelled as 'Bazball' cost them the game, McCullum said he felt England were a bit timid and the conditions didn't allow them to play freely in the Test match.

"I thought if anything we were maybe a touch timid. The conditions didn’t allow us to play with that same freedom but that’s cricket, you’ve got to adapt and try to absorb some of that pressure," McCullum said.

"We want to be the best versions of ourselves. It's not always going to work. As we said at the outset, you've got to buckle up for the ride. It's not nice in times like this but we'll come back stronger," added the England Test head coach.

'We were maybe a touch timid': Brendon McCullum reacts after South Africa thrash England in 1st Test

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the 'old powers' of cricket, Australia and England, over their criticism of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gavaskar lashed out at those accusing the IPL for being the disruptor of the cricketing calendar and said the likes of England and Australia should mind their own business and not interfere in India's cricketing matters.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been targeted by many of late over the potential clash of the schedules of the UAE and the South Africa T20 leagues with Australia's Big Bash League and England's The Hundred. BCCI is at the centre of criticism as several IPL owners have bought teams in both the UAE and the South African T20 leagues.

Three teams that will be part of the UAE's ILT20 league have been bought by the owners of IPL franchises, while all six teams that will participate in the South Africa T20 league have also been purchased by IPL team owners. With IPL's influence growing globally, the league has been blamed for disrupting the cricket calendar.

Gavaskar has slammed those criticising the Indian Premier League and said the likes of Australia and England should look after their own cricketing interests and not interfere in India's matters as both have Big Bash and The Hundred have their own separate windows in the annual cricket calendar.

"So, by all means, look after your cricket interests but hey please don’t interfere in ours and tell us what to do. We will look after our interests and do it better than what you tell us to do," Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar slamming Australia and England.

Gavaskar suggested both England and Australia cricket boards are unhappy that the clash of schedules of the various T20 leagues will see some top players from around the globe opting to play in UAE and South Africa instead of heading to the Big Bash or The Hundred.

"It’s been amusing to read that the Indian Premier League is once again seen as a disruptor of the cricketing calendar of other international teams. The moment the news about the South African T20 league and the UAE T20 league came out, the ‘old powers’ started squirming and got their apologists to have a go at the IPL," Gavaskar wrote in his column.

"The IPL has got a 75-day window in the international calendar and that’s simply because, thankfully, there are some administrators who can read the tea leaves and know it’s better to let their players play in the cricket world’s richest league than hold them back with some international commitments. The England & Wales Cricket Board has created a window for its showpiece event The Hundred when the England team don’t play any international matches."

"The Australians, too, have scheduled their Big Bash when their contracted players will be available to play. But it’s worrying them that the UAE and the South African T20 leagues are scheduled around the same time and there’s the danger of some of their players opting to play there instead of the Big Bash," he added.

Gavaskar called out the hypocrisy of some of the former England and Australia players, who want Indian players should be allowed to take part in overseas like Big Bash and The Hundred to ensure the popularity of their leagues grow but the BCCI cannot protect IPL's identity by not allowing their players to play in overseas leagues.

"Some overseas former players have said that the Indian players should be allowed to play the Big Bash or the Hundred. Basically, they want their leagues to have more sponsorship etc. They are concerned about their cricket, which is totally understandable," Gavaskar wrote.

"But when Indian cricket looks to protect its cricket by ensuring that their players stay fresh for their matches and thus restricting them from playing overseas, that is not acceptable to the guys from the ‘old powers’," the former India captain added.

IPL is currently the biggest and the most expensive T20 league in the world. It is arguably the best domestic cricket tournament in the world attracting top talent from across the globe. The cash-rich league also is the strongest financially and offers players the highest salary among the top T20 leagues in the world.

From MS Dhoni to Aaron Finch: Captains to have won T20 World Cup

England all-rounder Ben Stokes' decision to retire from ODI cricket sent shockwaves across the cricketing fraternity. Earlier this week, Stokes took to social media to announce he will be quitting the fifty-over format as he felt it is 'unsustainable' for him to continue playing all three formats of the game. The England Test skipper played his farewell ODI game against South Africa in Durham.

Stokes is one of the best all-rounders in the world at present and was a vital cog in England's ODI squad. He was one of the heroes of the country's maiden ODI World Cup triumph in 2019 and played a sensational knock in the final to keep the hosts in the game.

His decision to retire from ODIs came as a shock to many while also sparking a debate over the intensifying workload on cricketers who play all three formats these days. Many have paid tribute to the England star, who will continue to lead the team in Tests and also ply his trade in T20Is.

Former England Test captain Joe Root recently paid a touching tribute to Stokes after his farewell ODI against South Africa. Root spoke about Stokes' contributions for England in ODIs, including their maiden World Cup triumph in 2019.

"Obviously, a lot of emotions will be running through you. There’s a lot running through me at the minute as a friend. But just to sum things up, I mean your performances throughout your career and your efforts have been extraordinary. Some of the things you’ve achieved on the field have been extraordinary. Whether it be in the (World) Cup final, whether it be a number of things that you’ve done. Fifers, hundreds, incredible pieces of fielding," Root said in a video shared by ECB on Twitter.

Root, who was replaced by Stokes as England's Test captain, earlier this year, also went on to laud the star all-rounder for playing a key role in changing the way white-ball cricket is played. The former England Test captain called Stokes an inspiration for kids and said he is one of the reasons why budding cricketers would want to become all-rounders like him.

"But I think it’s also important to remember that some of the things that you’ve done have captured a nation. They’ve brought people to the game that have never watched it before. Been a part of the team and been a big part and a leader of a team that’s changed the way a lot of people around the world play white ball cricket in its format. The same with kids now that want to bat, bowl, and field because of the way you have gone about it," Root added.

England's limited-overs captain Jos Buttler said Ben Stokes' shock retirement from ODIs should serve as a wake-up call as talks grow over the packed schedule taking a toll on cricketers. Stokes announced his retirement from the fifty-over format on Monday (July 18) and played his final ODI game for England against South Africa on Tuesday (July 19).

In his statement, Stokes said he felt it was 'unsustainable' for him to continue playing all three formats of the game. The star all-rounder will continue leading England in Tests having recently taken over from Joe Root as the captain in the longest format. Sokes received an emotional farewell in his final ODI appearance for England but the hosts ended up losing the game by 62 runs.

Amid raging debate over the intense schedule in international cricket that many feel will affect cricketers, who want to play all three formats of the game, England skipper Buttler wants the administrators to learn from Stokes' decision. Ahead of his final ODI, Stokes had said cricketers 'are not cars, you can't just fill us up with petrol or diesel' while explaining the reason behind his ODI retirement.

"It should definitely be a bit of a wake-up call. Absolutely. Especially with the magnitude of the player. Ben's one of the most recognisable players in world cricket, someone everyone wants to see play in every format. I'm sure there's more to it than the schedules etc but I think in international cricket you always want your best players playing if possible," Buttler said at the post-match presentation ceremony following England's 62-run loss against South Africa in the 1st ODI.

Stokes was one of the heroes of England's maiden ODI World Cup triumph in 2019 where he scored 457 runs and picked up 7 wickets for his team. He also was the top scorer for England in the final against New Zealand with an unbeaten 84 to force the game into a Super Over.

One of the best all-rounders in the world at present, Stokes played a key role in England's rise in white-ball cricket under former captain Eoin Morgan and his absence will be felt during the ODI World Cup next year. Buttler said it was a bitter-sweet feeling for him as an England fan but insisted Stokes' Test career will benefit from the decision.

"It's bittersweet as an England fan. There's a bit of sadness that Ben is no longer available in this form of the game. But our loss in ODI cricket is certainly going to be England's gain in Test cricket. That's his favoured format and his priority, especially now he's captain, and I'm sure it will give him much more longevity in the purest form of the game," Buttler said.

Watch: Standing ovation for Ben Stokes as he comes out to bat in farewell ODI during SA series opener

Ben Stokes announced his retirement from ODI cricket on Monday (July 18), a day after India won the 50-over series versus hosts Jos Buttler-led England (also a day prior to English side's ongoing home ODIs versus South Africa).

Stokes retirement has led to many questioning the relevance of ODI cricket, especially since the surge of T20s. A lot of white-ball ICC events are lined-up each year, till 2031, along with the ICC Test Championship cycles as well. Hence, players are finding it tough to sustain themselves across formats and also be present for franchise cricket. Hence, Stokes walked away from the 50-over format, being part of England's memorable 2019 World Cup triumph. Recently, former English captain-turned-commentator Nasser Hussain opined that the all-rounder's decision came as he feared he will become 'stale' playing all forms of the game.

Hussain also pointed out Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson's current struggles, who are playing all formats at regular intervals and finding it tough as well. In his coloum for The Daily Mail, Hussain wrote, "Every time he [Stokes] goes onto that field, he wants to be 100% committed, not 80% - and that is what makes him the player he is."

"Some might suggest 80% of Stokes is enough but the problem is that once you play at 80%, it can lead lead to a drop in performance in another format. Just look at what has happened to Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson, for example. He doesn't want to become stale. Or go through the motions. He couldn't do that," he mentioned.

"Yes, his decision was something of a shout to the administrators because at the age of 31 someone like him shouldn't have to retire from a certain format," Nasser added.

For the unversed, both Williamson and Kohli are struggling for form at the moment. While Kohli's century-drought continues since late 2019, he also ended the England tour without a fifty. Williamson, on the other hand, scored only a solitary fifty in IPL 2022 and returned with not even a single half-century in the NZ's away Tests versus England.

Look what happened to Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson: Nasser Hussain reacts to Ben Stokes' ODI retirement

England all-rounder Ben Stokes said cricketers are not 'cars' as he opened up on his decision to quit ODI cricket. In what came as a shock to the cricketing world, Stokes announced his retirement from the fifty-over format on Monday (July 18) confirming that he will play his final ODI against South Africa in Durham on Tuesday. Stokes said it had become 'unsustainable' for him to continue playing all three formats of the game.

Stokes has been an integral member of the England squad across all formats of the game for several years now. He is one of the best all-rounders in the world and can be dangerous with both the bat and the ball in white-ball as well as red-ball cricket. The 31-year-old was one of the heroes of England's maiden World Cup triumph in 2019.

However, Stokes felt he was no more managing to give his 100 percent to the team as far as ODIs were concerned and wanted to focus only on Tests and T20Is going forward. Opening up on his decision to quit ODIs, Stokes said it was not an easy decision but he has to look after his body amid a packed schedule in cricket.

“It was never going to be an easy one, but now being the captain of the Test team and how much cricket is coming up, I have to look after my body because I want to play as long as I possibly can,” Stokes said on Sky Sports ahead of his final ODI appearance for England in the 1st ODI against South Africa at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street.

Stokes also went on to highlight how modern-day cricket is a lot more demanding and the current schedule is taking a toll on players. He said cricketers are not cars who can be expected to perform continuously by getting refuelled.

“You always want to be contributing to your team and need to be on it, 100% of the time. We're not cars where you can fill us up with petrol. It does all add up, it does have an effect on you. The schedule is jam-packed and you're asking a lot of the players to keep putting in 100% of their efforts every time you walk onto the field for your country," said the 31-year-old, who will continue leading England in Tests.

'One of the greatest ever': Ben Stokes responds to Virat Kohli's message ahead of his last ODI for England

Ben Stokes shocked the cricketing world with a surprise announcement on Monday (July 18) as the England Test captain confirmed he has decided to retire from ODI cricket. One of the best all-rounders in world cricket, Stokes said it was 'unsustainable' for him to continue playing all three formats of the game which led to the decision of giving up the fifty-over format.

Stokes was one of the vital cogs in England's ODI setup and his retirement has certainly come as a huge blow to the team ahead of the 202 ICC ODI World Cup next year. He was one of the heroes of England's maiden ODI World Cup triumph in 2019 with stellar contributions from the bat and the ball.

Several cricket experts and former England cricketers have already expressed their disappointment over Stokes' decision to quit ODIs. Many, including the likes of former England captains Nasser Hussain and Michael Vaughan, have blamed the packed cricketing schedule for Stokes' retirement from ODIs.

Recently, former England captain Kevin Pietersen also joined the bandwagon and took to Twitter to recall his decision of retiring early from ODI cricket in 2012. Like Stokes, Pietersen was also 31 at the time he decided to retire from the fifty-over format and said he had decided to quit due to the 'intensity of the international schedule'.

Amid raging debate over the demanding cricketing schedule after Stokes' surprising decision, Pietersen recalled how he was not supported by the England Cricket Board (ECB) when he had told them he wanted to quit ODIs due to the schedule. ECB even banned Pietersen from T20s for retiring early from ODIs.

"I once said the schedule was horrendous and I couldn’t cope, so I retired from ODI cricket & the ECB banned me from T20s too," the former England captain tweeted on Tuesday.

'ECB banned me from T20s too': Kevin Pietersen recalls his early ODI retirement after Ben Stokes' announcement

Former England captain Nasser Hussain said Test captain Ben Stokes' shock retirement from ODIs is disappointing news to say the least. Stokes announced his decision to quit the fifty-over format on Monday (July 18) and confirmed he will play his final ODI against South Africa in Durham on Tuesday. The 31-year-old is one of the best payers England have and was one of the key members of the team across all three formats.

Stokes is regarded as one of the best all-rounders in world cricket at present and his decision to quit ODIs came as a shock to many. The England all-rounder said he decided to quit ODIs as it felt it was 'unsustainable' for him to carry on playing all three formats of the game.

England's 2019 ODI World Cup hero has dealt with mental fatigue and injuries in the recent past. Stokes had taken a mental health break from cricket last year and had also missed the T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE. He then gave a miss to IPL 2022 and also puled out of The Hundred this year.

Reacting to his shock retirement from ODIs, Hussain blamed the packed cricket schedule which he believes is proving to be a nightmare for cricketers. Hussain said the current schedule in cricket is 'madness' for players and it's hard to cope for even the best of best like Stokes, who wants to give his all whenever he takes the field for England.

"It is disappointing news to say the least but it is a reflection of where the cricketing schedule is at the moment. It is madness for players," Nasser Hussain said on Sky Sports.

"Half the reasons (for his retirement decision) will be physical, and half will be mental, and mental in Ben's case is the fact he can't do things at 70, 80%. He's not just going to be a bit-part player, he has to do it full on and he's not willing to do it unless he does it 100 percent.

"In a way, I respect him immensely for making that decision because that's how you want every England cricketer to turn up, giving it everything every single day," he added.

Stokes was one of England's best players in the 2019 ODI World Cup where he scored 457 runs and picked up 7 wickets to play an instrumental role in helping his team lift their maiden World Cup title. He had recently taken over as England's Test captain from Joe Root and said he wasn't able to give his 100 percent in all three formats which is why he decided to retire from ODIs. Hussain has blamed the 'absolutely crazy' cricket schedule for forcing Stokes into retiring from ODIs early in his career.

"I guess it's the schedule. The cricketing schedule is absolutely crazy at the moment. If you just play in the one format - say Test matches - it's absolutely fine," said Hussain.

"But if you're a multi-format, multi-dimensional player, and even a Test Match captain like Ben Stokes, who throws himself into his job 100% on and off the field, eventually something's going to have to give, and it looks like for Ben it is 50-over cricket which is a real shame because he gave us and England fans the greatest day for a very long time in 2019, a day we'll never forget with that World Cup final," added the former England captain.

“As hard as a decision as this was to come to, it’s not as hard dealing with the fact I can’t give my teammates 100% of myself in this format anymore. The England shirt deserves nothing less from anyone who wears it.

Stokes, who was one of the heroes of England's maiden ODI World Cup triumph in 2019, said retiring from ODIs will help him shift his focus entirely on Tests and T20Is. “I will give everything I have to Test cricket, and now, with this decision, I feel I can also give my total commitment to the T20 format," said Stokes.

England's 2019 World Cup hero Ben Stokes announces retirement from ODI cricket

In pursuit of 260, Rohit Sharma-led India were in a spot of bother in the third and final ODI versus Jos Buttler-led England at Old Trafford, Manchester on Sunday (July 17). India lost their famed top three -- skipper Rohit, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli -- very soon and were reduced to 38 for 3 before Suryakumar Yadav's dismissal further pushed India on the back foot, reeling at 72 for 4.

From thereon, Hardik Pandya -- who had helped India dismiss England for 259 in 45.5 overs courtesy of his 4/24 -- joined Rishabh Pant and the duo batted sensibly in the initial few overs before the all-rounder attacked swiftly and allowed the keeper-batter to play freely. Without dropping much sweat, the duo stitched an invaluable 133-run fifth-wicket match-winning stand. Despite Hardik being out for a 55-ball 71, Pant stayed till the end to ensure India went past the finish line, by five wickets, with his unbeaten 125-run knock, off 113 balls.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Hardik revealed the chat he had with centurion Pant. He said, "I was just repeating the same thing and even told him that I am repeating it too much! Let’s have a partnership, take the match as close as possible, and finish the match. Pehle match toh close kar, phir tujhe enjoy karna hai to kar le! (Finish the match first, then you can enjoy if you want).“And then he opened up. Everyone knows when he starts hitting, we are like ab hum baith jaate hain, chalo aap khelo (okay, now we can sit back and relax and you can hit)."

Stressing on the talent they both have, the run rate or the remaining number of overs wasn't going to be an issue. In this regard, Hardik added, "The talent that he has and the talent that I perhaps have – there was no need to take any risks at that stage. Without any risks, we could score those runs as there were not many runs to get. The only way England could come back is if we lose back-to-back wickets."
