The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Wednesday announced that it has appointed Matthew Mott as England Men`s white-ball head coach. Mott, 48, has signed a four-year agreement and is expected to be in place for England`s three-match ODI series against The Netherlands in Amsterdam next month. The ECB`s selection panel of Chief Executive Officer Tom Harrison, Managing Director of England`s Men`s Cricket Rob Key, Strategic Adviser Andrew Strauss and Performance Director Mo Bobat unanimously agreed that he was the standout candidate for the role during the competitive interview process.

Mott has led the Australian Women`s Team since 2015 and during his seven years in charge has overseen one of the world`s best winning records across the international sport. Under his leadership, Australia Women have won consecutive ICC T20 World Cups, this year`s ICC Women`s 50-Over World Cup and are undefeated in four Ashes series. Mott has also helped Australia win 26 consecutive one-day internationals, a record in either the men`s or women`s game. Before taking up his post with Australia women in 2015, Mott worked as Head Coach of New South Wales - leading them to victory in the Champions League T20 tournament in 2009 - and then coached Glamorgan, reaching the final of the Yorkshire Bank 40 in 2013, before working as a consultant for Ireland during the 2015 ICC Men`s World Cup.

England Men`s White-Ball Head Coach, Matthew Mott in a statement said: "I am delighted to accept the opportunity to take this white-ball role with England. Whilst I am Australian, I have deep connections, and several of my closest friends are in the UK, having spent considerable time in Scotland, Wales and England, both as a player and coach."When this role became available, I was attracted by the chance to work with such an established and successful team under the astute leadership of Eoin Morgan and now Rob Key, whom I have always admired as an excellent cricket mind." Mott opined, "The idea of the split roles and the chance to work alongside Brendon McCullum in his red-ball role is an opportunity that I am incredibly enthusiastic about and certainly provides the right balance for my family as we embark on this exciting journey."

"It was always going to take something special to leave the role that I have loved for the past seven years with the Australian Women`s team. However, I genuinely believe that the time is right to play a role in helping the England Men`s ODI and T20 group continue to evolve as one of the best teams in the world. I am fully aware that this team has been functioning well and part of my initial plan is to work with the playing group and support staff on how we can firstly maintain, then enhance, the success they have started to build over the past few years." He further added, "Since the excitement of accepting this role, I, like many people around the world, have been trying to come to terms with the tragic loss of my great mate Andrew Symonds. The support of his beautiful family and close friends in the coming days will be vitally important, so I respectfully request some time to process his passing and the immense loss before making any further comment on the role at this stage."

England pacer Mark Wood believes players let down Joe Root as captain which led to him resigning from the post of England's Test skipper earlier this year.
Newly-appointed England captain Ben Stokes has indicated that pace-bowling stalwarts James Anderson and Stuart Broad will make a quick return to the Test squad for the three-match series at home against New Zealand starting on June 2 at Lord`s. Anderson and Broad were overlooked for England`s tour against West Indies earlier this year as selectors instead opted to provide greater opportunities to the next generation of pace bowlers. England fell to a 1-0 series defeat against West Indies during the series and star batter Joe Root stood down as skipper shortly after the team returned home.

England have since confirmed Rob Key as the new managing director of their men`s team and appointed Stokes as Test captain, with the short-term future of their two leading wicket-takers now looking rosier ahead of a busy summer schedule. Speaking for the first time since his appointment as captain on Tuesday, Stokes said he wants to bring a winning culture back to England and that he plans to have Anderson and Broad by his side this summer. "I want to win games of cricket for England. The best way to do that is picking your best XI and in my opinion if Stuart Broad and James Anderson are fit they are available for selection."ICC quoted Stokes as saying.

Records are created and broken in world cricket on a regular basis, but how often do we see a player's career records getting adjusted more than 100 years after his death. England great W.G. Grace, who is considered the founder of modern-day batting, has been stripped of two centuries by Wisden Cricketers' Almanack.

Grace, one of cricket's oldest superstars, played for England and teams like Gloucestershire, London County and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MMC) among others. He was thought to have played a whopping 880 first-class matches in his career, however, on the recommendation of the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians (ACSH), Wisden has decided to remove ten games from his records.

As a result of the changes introduced in his cricketing records, Grace's tally of runs in First-Class cricket has come down to 54,211 from 54,896. The former England all-rounder's tally of wickets has also been reduced to 2,809 from 2,876 as the ten matches have been deemed not first-class. He had 126 centuries to his name which have now come down to 124.

Born in Downend, Bristol in the year 1848, Grace was one of the first stars of the sport and the tales of his heroics are part of the English cricketing folklore. He has often been compared with the legendary Don Bradman given his incredible first-class record of over 50,000 runs and more than 2,000 wickets.

Joe Root stepped down as the England cricket team Test captain on Friday following series defeats in the Ashes series against Australia and the recently concluded close series against West Indies. Root had a number of ups and down since taking over the captaincy role back in 2017 and he led the England side in Test cricket on 64 occasions. Following the loss against West Indies, a number of former skippers turned against him and asked for him to step down from the captaincy role. Michael Vaughan, Ben Stokes lead tributes for Joe Root after resignation as England skipper

Joe Root has stepped down as England`s test captain, the country`s cricket board said on Friday, succumbing to pressure from influential figures within the game following a run of poor results capped by dispiriting tours of Australia and the Caribbean.

Root`s future as head of the team came increasingly under the microscope after England slumped to a 4-0 defeat Down Under last year and then went down 1-0 in a three-test series in the West Indies.

Joe Root steps down as England cricket team Test captain following West Indies defeat

England captain Joe Root is facing the heat from all corners after his side's 1-0 defeat in the recently-concluded Test series against West Indies. After the first two Tests of the series ended in a draw, West Indies thrashed England by ten wickets in the final third encounter to clinch the series 1-0.

Kyle Mayers delivered a stellar performance with the ball as he bagged a five-wicket haul to run through the England batting line-up in their second innings and bundle them out for a paltry 120. West Indies chased down the target of 29 runs without breaking a sweat and won the Test match comprehensively to claim the series.

It was yet another disappointing performance from England in the longest format after their 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Australia in the Ashes 2021-22 earlier this year. Following England's 1-0 loss to West Indies, there have been calls for Root's sacking as the Test captain of the side.

The likes of former England captain Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton among others want Root to step down from his post and make way for a fresh change in the leadership role. Here we take a look at three England stars who can replace Root as the next Test captain of the team:

1) Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes is seen as the leading contender to replace Joe Root as the new Test captain of England. One of the best all-rounders in the world at present, Stokes has been remarkably consistent for the side across formats over the last few years. The star all-rounder led an inexperienced and young England side in an ODI series against Pakistan last year and inspired the side to a 2-1 win.

Stokes is one of the most experienced players in the current England Test squad with 79 matches to his name. Stokes has amassed over 5,000 runs and scalped 174 wickets in his Test career so far and can be an ideal candidate to lead the team going forward.

2) Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler might not have been a regular for England in Tests recently but is part of the team's leadership group across formats. Buttler is one of the best attacking batters as far as white-ball cricket is concerned but is also equally good in red-ball cricket. He is also one of the senior-most members in the England Test squad and can be handed over the responsibility to lead the team in the longest format.

Buttler, who was dropped from the squad for the West Indies Test series, has played 57 Tests in his career so far. He has amassed 2907 runs at an average of over 31 in the longest format.

3) Jonny Bairstow

England's Test side has been undergoing a transition for quite a while now with no set openers and a lack of firepower in the middle-order. Despite England's struggles in the whites, Jonny Bairstow has been one of the better performers for the team.

A technically sound batter who has been equally good across all formats, Bairstow has already played 83 Tests for his country and has amassed 4801 runs at an average of over 34, including 8 hundreds and 22 fifties. He can also be one of the contenders to take over captaincy if Root is sacked from his position in Tests.

3 players who can replace Joe Root as next Test captain of England

West Indies thrashed England by ten wickets on Day 4 of the third and final Test to win the three-match series 1-0 on Sunday (March 27), at the National Cricket Stadium, St George's, Grenada. It was a hard-fought Test series where the Joe Root-led visitors had their moments, however, they failed to capitalise on them before Kraigg Brathwaite-led Windies emerged on top in the series decider to win the series 1-0.

Joe Root has been England's run-machine in Tests for quite some time. While he was in superb form in 2021, he has brought his flawless batting form into the new year as well. While the England Test captain ended with the first Test versus hosts West Indies with a gritty 109, in the drawn series opener at Antigua, Root slammed a phenomenal 153 in the ongoing second Test versus Kraigg Brathwaite-led Windies.

While Root went to stumps on the opening day at 119, on Wednesday (March 16) he eventually fell for 153 -- studded with 14 fours. After his knock, the 31-year-old set an all-time English record. Root went past his predecessor Alastair Cook (11) for the most 150+ scores by an English player (12) in the history of Test cricket. In addition, Root has consolidated his tally at the top with the most 150-plus scores among active players. He has, thus, extended his lead over India's former skipper Virat Kohli (10) with most scores in excess of 150 in whites (12) among active batters.

Hence, the England pacer decided to remain where he was and was seen making a gesture of a team meeting with himself. His actions left the commentators in splits and the video of the incident soon went viral on social media. England need to stop players from going to IPL in order to improve their Test side: Mickey Arthur

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) may decide to pull out its players from the latter part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the team`s preparation for the three-Test series against New Zealand, scheduled to commence at Lord`s on June 2.

Some of the leading England Test cricketers, including pace bowler Mark Wood and middle-order batter Jonny Bairstow, are among the 22 players from the county to have registered for the 10-franchise IPL mega auction next month.

While the IPL schedule hasn`t been announced, it is likely to be held between March 27 and the last week of May, giving absolutely no time for the England Test cricketers to prepare for the home series against the Blackcaps.

If England cricketers play the full duration of the IPL, it would most likely make them unavailable for the Lord`s Test as they would have no preparation whatsoever in red-ball cricket before taking on the reigning World Test champions.

A report in Cricbuzz said on Friday that while "no formal communication" has yet been given to England`s players or the IPL teams about their availability, it is understood that "several franchises have been given an indication that they should plan to lose England players likely to be involved against the Blackcaps before the conclusion of the IPL."

Besides Bairstow and Wood, several other Test cricketers, including Dawid Malan, Ollie Pope, Craig Overton, Sam Billings and Dan Lawrence, could also be in the ECB`s scheme of things as they were part of the recently concluded Ashes in Australia. Jos Buttler, who was also Down Under for the five-Test series, has been retained by Rajasthan Royals. England Test skipper Joe Root, all-rounder Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes have ruled themselves out of IPL.

A clear picture will emerge after next month`s auction, depending upon how may England cricketer get picked. But in all likelihood, the ECB would like the players selected for the Tests to play at least one County Championship match (May 19 onwards) before the series against the Kiwis.

England Test players likely to miss later stages of IPL 2022 due to series against New Zealand

The England Cricket Board (ECB) had launched an investigation into the post-Ashes drinking session involving Australia and England players. Some of the England and Australia cricketers were seen enjoying drinks late till morning post the conclusion of the Ashes 2021-22 in Hobart. The police had to intervene as the celebrations were deemed 'too loud'.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media which shows England skipper Joe Root and pacer James Anderson enjoying drinks with Australia's Travis Head, Nathan Lyon, Alex Carey and others. The video has reportedly been taken by England's assistant coach Graham Thorpe and was released by the Sydney Morning Herald.

The players from both sides were reportedly drinking late till 6 am and had to be asked to go back to bed by the police officers, who intervened in the celebrations after another guest staying at the hotel complained about the noise. The players were enjoying their drinks and celebrating on the terrace of the fourth floor of the Crowne Plaza hotel in Hobart.

"Too loud. You have obviously been asked to pack up, so we've been asked to come. Time for bed. Thank you. They just want to pack up," a police officer can be heard saying in the video, asking the group to go back to their rooms. The players can be seen leaving immediately without creating a fuss.

However, the video has left the ECB in an embarrassing position with captain Root pictured drinking and celebrating with the Australian players after England's shambolic 4-0 loss in the Ashes. England lost the first three Tests in a row before drawing the fourth one to avoid a clean sweep.

They would have hoped to end the series with a consolation win having already conceded the prestigious Urn. However, Australia continued their dominant run in the series and won the final fifth Test by 156 runs to remain unbeaten in the series.

"During the early hours of Monday morning, members of the England and Australia men's teams shared a drink in the team areas of the hotel in Hobart," ECB said in a statement.

England managed to draw the fourth Test against Australia in the ongoing Ashes 2021-22 after a thrilling finish on Day 5 at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney.
England were on the verge of losing their fourth Test in a row in the ongoing Ashes series after Steve Smith removed Jack Leach in the 100th over with the Aussies needing just one wicket to win. However, Broad and Anderson managed to hang on and save the Test match for the visitors.

While Broad scored 8 off 35 balls after coming out to bat at no.10, Anderson remained unbeaten on 0 while facing the entire last over from Smith. England managed to draw the fourth Test against Australia in the ongoing Ashes 2021-22 after a thrilling finish on Day 5 at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney. England's last batting pair of James Anderson and Stuart Broad survived a nervy spell of two overs together to pull off a dramatic draw for the visitors after three back-to-back losses in the first three Test matches.

England's last batting pair of James Anderson and Stuart Broad survived a nervy spell of two overs together to pull off a dramatic draw for the visitors after three back-to-back losses in the first three Test matches. It was a nail-biting finish to the game as fans and experts took to Twitter to hail the beauty of Test cricket. Twitter flooded with reactions as the SCG Test ended in a draw between Australia and England. Check out some of the reactions: What a finish in Sydney! Couldn't take my eyes off the action. Twitter explodes as James Anderson survives thrilling final over to save 4th Ashes Test for England

Joe Root-led England conceded the urn to Australia after losing the third Test of the Ashes 2021/22 edition Down Under. England, thus, once again fell flat in Tests in Australia as plenty of questions have been raised on their ordinary team selections, strategies, team management's functioning, etc.

For the unversed, England's winless streak in Ashes Down Under has continued since the 2010-11 edition, where they won 3-1. While their bowlers have done well in patches, England's batters have fell flat whereas their fielding and decision-making has been far from impressive. Thus, the Test captain Root and head coach Chris Silverwood are under the radar whereas many have raised fingers on England's priority towards Tests, calling for more focus on County championships.

In an exclusive interaction with www.wionnews.com's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo, former English spinner Monty Panesar decoded Root & Co.'s shambolic performances and lavished huge praise on Virat Kohli's Team India.

Monty said, "Yeah....It kind of has surprised few people how England lost these games. It started of when Joe Root won the toss at Brisbane and should've bowled in overcast conditions. Stuart Broad should've played at The Gabba and Jimmy Anderson is a better bowler away from the Gabba. There were some surprising decisions and also the lack of a frontline spinner. Jack Leach is a good bowler on turning pitches and, hence, was successful in India. However, in Australia, you have to control that one end...Even the overall attitude towards spin isn't encouragiing. In the second Test when spin was playing a huge part, Nathan Lyon bowled 25 overs out of 80 while England had only 20 overs from 150 overs allocated to spin. In general, the attitude towards spin is like that...they get found out in away Tests."

England's head coach Silverwood has been on the firing line following his side's listless performance in Ashes 2021. While he will miss the fourth Test, in Sydney, after his family member tested positive for Covid-19, Panesar sympathised with the former cricketer and shifted the blame entirely on the batters. The ex-spinner, who accounted for 167 Test scalps, feels more focus has to be on County cricket to revamp England's fortunes in Tests.

Panesar stated, "He (Silverwood) will be disappointed. Not to be there....Again, it will take him away from limelight as well. Possibly after the Ashes, maybe we see more detailed interview of Silverwood.....He is a decent and honourable man...extremely hard-working. He is a head coach who specialises in fast bowling...If you look at the Ashes, the bowlers have done well but the batting has been an issue. But if you look at the India-SA series, you ask yourself 'why is it that Indian batters have good technique and can adapt' but the English batters cannot...It maybe because the County period is from early April to end of September. But June, July and August is consumed by playing white-ball cricket....At the moment, the schedule is accomodating the medium-pacers and batters are too scared to get out lbw or bowled..... "

He added, "Also Eoin Morgan (limited-overs skipper) gets his best white-ball players but I don't think Joe Root gets the same privilege or freedom like Morgan has...In 2022, they got to prioritise Test cricket in England. They need to prioritise County Championship games first and then build the schedule around that. England should always be looking to play their best XI, regardless of the schedule and team they are playing against."

"This England team is good in swinging conditions. But away from England, they aren't...It will be interesting to see how they perform in West Indies in their own conditions (upcoming tour in 2022). In recent times, they are not a good team away from home but at home, they compete well due to the conditions. We need to produce harder, flatter and firmer pitches where spinners can play a role in 3rd or 4th Day and the medium-pacers are there, but they don't play a bigger role like they do right now. Hit the deck a bit more...And young batters need to learn how to build an innings at the Test level," said Panesar.

Australia mauled England by an innings and 14 runs in the third Test of the ongoing Ashes 2021 to clinch the five-match series with three back-to-back wins and retain the prestigious urn. Debutant Scott Boland bowled his heart out and picked up a memorable six wicket-haul as he ran through the hapless English batting line-up in their second innings on Day 3 of the Boxing Day Test on Tuesday.

England, who were bundled out for a paltry 185 runs in their first innings of the third Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) suffered yet another terrible batting collapse in their second innings. The visitors were folded for just 68 runs in their second innings as they failed to overhaul Australia's 83-run lead and conceded the game within three days.

England captain Joe Root top-scored for the visitors with 28 runs off 59 balls. He was the lone warrior once again as none of the other batters managed to put on a fight against the Australian pacers, who dominated the proceedings. Boland was the pick of the bowlers for the Aussies as the fast bowler sone on debut.

The defeat is a much-needed reality check for England, who have been left exposed in the ongoing Ashes 2021-22 as the Test series has looked fairly one-sided with the hosts dominating the proceedings so far. England captain Root said he was absolutely gutted with the innings defeat and admitted his side were blown away by the Aussies.

"It is what it is. We have come to dealing with this sort of environment for a while now. We have a lot of hard work to do now and come back strong in the last two games. Covid threat wasn't ideal. The way we went about our cricket, especially our bowling was excellent yesterday," said Root post his side's defeat.

England bowlers had done well during Australia's first innings to ensure the hosts didn't manage to get to a big total. Senior pacer James Anderson picked up a four-wicket haul while Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson scalped two wickets apiece to give England a chance to fight back in the game.

Skipper Joe Root top-scored with 28 off 59 balls while only two batters managed to get into double figures. Debutant pacer Scott Boland impressed for Australia as he picked up a six-wicket haul during England's second innings to run through the visitors' batting line-up and power the hosts to a convincing win. Australia have clinched Ashes 2021-22 and retained the urn with three back-to-back wins in the five-match series.

Wasim Jaffer brutally trolls Michael Vaughan for '92 all out India' tweet as Australia hammer England in Ashes

England have struggled miserably in the ongoing Ashes 2021-22 against Australia Down Under. The Joe Root-led side is already 2-0 down in the five-match series and produced yet another dismal show on Day 1 of the ongoing third Test against the hosts at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday. England's batting line-up suffered another terrible collapse as Australia dominated the proceedings on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test.

Root & Co. were bundled out for a paltry 185 runs on Day 1 as none of the batters barring skipper Root (50 off 82 balls) and Jonny Bairstow (35 off 75 balls) managed to show some fight against the Aussie bowlers. Australia captain Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon picked up six wickets between them to rattle England on Day 1 of the Boxing Day encounter.

Reacting to England's poor show on Day 1, Vaughan said not just skipper Root but the entire England set-up is currently under pressure. Vaughan called Root a great guy but insisted he has not been up to the mark as a captain this year and has made several selection blunders in important series.

“They’re under pressure, the whole set-up is under pressure. He is a great guy; Joe Root is a fantastic human being, but he’s made mistakes over the last year. In the summer he made big mistakes in India, getting it wrong in Brisbane with his selection, again in Adelaide with his selection and his tactics,” said Vaughan in a chat with Fox Cricket.

England once again left fast bowler Stuart Broad out of the playing XI for the third Test against Australia in Melbourne. The decision has left Vaughan baffled as the former England captain questioned how can someone as experienced as Broad miss out on a spot in the playing XI despite the pitch being a green top.

“I look at someone like Stuart Broad; in Brisbane, he wasn’t selected on that green top there, he’s not selected here. How England have not seen Stuart Broad, with all his experience, such a wonderful Test career, is not going to be bowling a ball on a green top in Brisbane and now not here in Melbourne, that’s staggering really," said Vaughan.

Taking a dig at England over their shambolic performances in the Ashes 2021-22 so far, Vaughan said the only thing they have done right in the series is to turn up on time for every game.

"How Stuart Broad is not going to be bowling around the wicket to David Warner on a green top, I just can’t fathom that with the quality that he brings. So far the only thing they’ve done right on the trip is turn up on time,” Vaughan concluded.
