England will be well prepared for the Twenty20 World Cup because half of the squad are getting used to conditions in the United Arab Emirates by playing in the Indian Premier League, bowler Tymal Mills said.

The IPL was suspended near its halfway stage in May as India grappled with a surge of COVID-19 cases and two franchises reported several infections.

The remainder of the season was then shifted to the UAE, which also hosts the World Cup in October-November, and Oman.

"One of our advantages is that we`ve got half the squad playing in the IPL at the moment," Mills, who was recalled to the squad for the first time since February 2017, told reporters on Monday.

"I`m sure we`ll come out of that with a bunch of information and ... we`ll be well-prepped and well-versed by the time we get together. I`m sure we`ll be full of confidence and back ourselves to beat any team.

"We`ve got a very strong, very adaptable squad and most of the guys have played a lot of cricket in that area, whether it`s IPL, Pakistan Super League or internationally."

England are favourites to win the Twenty20 World Cup despite the absence of pace bowler Jofra Archer and all-rounder Ben Stokes, wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler said.

Stokes was not included in England`s 15-man preliminary squad as he extends his break from cricket to focus on his mental health, while Archer ruled himself out after he suffered a recurrence of a stress fracture in his right elbow.

Coach Chris Silverwood named batter Liam Livingstone and fast bowler Tymal Mills as the replacements in the England squad for the World Cup, which will be held in the United Arab Emirates and Oman from Oct. 17.

"Liam Livingstone, with the way his game was in those T20 series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan and The Hundred, he will go into the World Cup with fantastic confidence.

Jos Buttler says England can win T20 World Cup even without Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes

England's spin bowling all-rounder Moeen Ali on Monday announced retirement from Test cricket to prolong his career in white-ball formats, saying he is "content" despite the widespread belief that he could have achieved a lot more.

The 34-year-old leaves the Test arena with 2,914 runs in 64 matches at an average of 28.29. Besides his five centuries with the bat, Ali has taken 195 wickets with his off-spin bowling at an average of 36.66 since his Test debut in 2014.

"I'm 34 now and I want to play for as long as I can and I just want to enjoy my cricket," Ali said.

"Test cricket is amazing, when you're having a good day it's better than any other format by far, it's more rewarding and you feel like you've really earned it."

Ali had already informed his England captain Joe Root and head coach Chris Silverwood of his decision.

"I will miss just walking out there with the lads, playing against best in the world with that feeling of nerves but also from a bowling point of view, knowing with my best ball I could get anyone out.

"I've enjoyed Test cricket but that intensity can be too much sometimes and I feel like I've done enough of it and I'm happy and content with how I've done."

Ali, who has not played a lot of Test cricket since the 2019 Ashes, was recalled for the recent home series against India. He was apparently not comfortable with the thought of staying away from family for extended periods.
He had made up his mind even before the COVID-19 protocols were shared with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for the Ashes tour to Australia.

According to a press release issued by England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Ali hopes that his Test career will inspire and open the door for other British Muslims to play for England.

"It always takes somebody to inspire you or takes somebody to think if he can do it I can and I hope there are a few people out there who are thinking that.

"I know he wasn't English but someone like Hashim Amla, when I first saw him, I thought if he can do it I can do it, it does take that little spark.

"I'd love one day in 8-10 years' time to say Moeen made it easier for me. There have been guys before me who made it easier, so you hope to open the door for someone else."

He is currently in the UAE, playing for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.
Ali will continue playing white-ball cricket for England, county cricket for Worcestershire and domestic Twenty20 tournaments.
He remains a part of England's plans for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman.

Only James Anderson and Stuart Broad took more Test wickets for England in Ali's time in the side, with the spinner the 12th greatest wicket-taker globally in that period.

As a spinner, his finest period came between 2017 and 2019. In 2017, he took 26 wickets at 15.64 against South Africa, claiming a famous hat-trick at the Oval. The following summer he collected 32 wickets across six Tests on tour against West Indies and Sri Lanka.

Ali was on the verge of becoming only the 15th player in Test history to score 3,000 runs and claim 200 wickets when the fifth Test against India was cancelled owing to COVID-19 threat.

Playing at every position from No.1 to No.9, it was with the bat that Ali first earned national selection and in 2016 he showed why so many experts rated him highly, making 1078 runs at 46.86 for the calendar year.
Four of his five career centuries came that year as he climbed to a career-high third on the ICC Test all-rounder rankings.

Ali thanked his coaches, captains and all of his family for their support during his Test career.
"I have to thank Peter Moores and Chris Silverwood for being my coaches and Peter for giving me my debut. Cookie and Rooty as the captains who I've enjoyed playing under and I hope they are happy with how I played.

"My parents are my number one, I feel without their support there is no way I would have made it, every game I played was for them and I know they are really proud of me."

The spin bowling all-rounder added, "My brothers and my sister, on my bad days they've been the first to pick me up and my wife and kids, my wife's sacrifices and the patience she has, I am really grateful for that.
"They have all been amazing on my journey, everything I did I did for them."

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been left miffed after New Zealand and England's decision to pull out of their respective tours of the country. The New Zealand team was in Pakistan for a limited-overs tour but abandoned the series after a 'security threat'. Days after New Zealand's decision to not play in Pakistan, England confirmed that they will not be touring the country.

As per a report in PTI, PCB chief Ramiz Raza has been on a 'warpath' since New Zealand and England's decision to pull out from their respective commitments. The PCB is now planning to take legal action against the two cricket boards ahead of the next ICC meeting.

PCB chief Raza is reportedly busy exploring legal options to take action against the England Cricket Board, and the New Zealand Cricket Board after speaking to PCB's patron-in-chief and Prime Minister Imran Khan.

"Pakistan is studying all legal resources it can take to demand compensation from the two boards," a source was quoted as saying by PTI.

Meanwhile, England cricket's player's body has claimed the England Cricket Board did not seek the suggestions from the players before making the decision to call off the tour of Pakistan. A spokesperson of the&nbsp;Team England Player Partnership (TEPP) denied players' involvement in the decision to not tour Pakistan.

"At no stage has the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) ever asked Team England Player Partnership or the teams, men and women, whether the tour should go ahead or whether players were prepared to tour Pakistan," a TEPP spokesperson was quoted as saying by British media.

Pakistan will now focus on preparing for the upcoming T20 World Cup after both New Zealand and England pulled out of their respective tours. The Babar Azam-led side will open their World Cup campaign against arch-rivals India on October 24.

PCB chairman Ramiz Raja slams England after they cancel Pakistan tour following New Zealand - Watch

Australia`s Test captain Tim Paine is confident he will be ready for the start of the Ashes series against England in December following surgery to fix a bulging disc in his neck.

The 36-year-old had been suffering from severe pain down his left side caused by a pinched nerve and, on the advice of surgeons, underwent the procedure on Tuesday.

Paine said he hopes to return to full training by the end of October after a six-week recuperation period.

"The precedent has been set, guys have got back from it reasonably quickly," he told SEN radio. "We`ve been talking to all those players, their physios, their surgeons to track their rehab plans and get me back as quick as we can.

"I`m pretty confident outside of that six weeks I`ll be ready to go within a week. That gives me plenty of time (for the Ashes). "I won`t be as fit or as strong as I`d like to be. If I am moving freely, I`ll give a good fist of it."

The first test against England at the Gabba in Brisbane is scheduled to start on Dec. 8 and will be followed by four further matches in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.

"I`m pretty happy with the decision," said Paine. "After the surgeon had a look in there, he said it was a good decision to get it done."

The wicketkeeper-batsman, who took over as captain following Steve Smith`s sacking in the wake of the 2018 Newlands ball-tampering scandal, said he had the operation in a bid to prolong his career beyond his Test playing days.

"I want to keep playing for Tasmania after my international career," he said. "To have it fixed and out of the way was the correct decision long term."

I'll be ready for Ashes 2021, says Australia captain Tim Paine

The last quarter&nbsp;of 2021 promises to provide plenty of cricketing action for the gentlemen's game's ardent lovers worldwide with IPL 2021, T20 World Cup and Ashes 2021 on cards. However, the fate of Ashes 2021 hangs in the balance as Joe Root &amp; Co. could boycott this year's Ashes citing strict bio-bubble life Down Under.

According to ESPN Cricinfo, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) remain adamant and have not given much thought about postponement, which has not been received well by the senior players and support staff.

"The prospect of England fielding a significantly under-strength squad in the Ashes would appear to have grown following talks between the team and officials at the ECB," the website reported. "As a result, they are considering their options. One of those options is understood to be the entire team - including coaching and support staff - taking a collective decision to boycott the tour.

"While the players appear, in general, fairly sanguine about the prospect of a two-week quarantine for themselves, they are reluctant to put their families through it. And with some players away for the best part of four months (the IPL being followed by the T20 World Cup and the Ashes), they are understandably reluctant not to see their families for the entire period," it stated.

Strict quarantine rules Down Under

It also reported, "The nature of the quarantine is also understood to have disappointed the players. Although there has been talk of allowing them the use of a resort hotel on the Gold Coast, it is now understood they are likely to be permitted only two or three hours out of their hotel rooms each day for training.

"There is also a possibility the squad will be obliged to remain in some sort of 'bubble' throughout the tour to avoid difficulties in moving between states. Families, meanwhile, could still be required to undergo a 'hard' quarantine involving 14 days in a hotel room."

Even during India's tour of Australia last year, the bio-bubble life had taken a toll on the Indian cricketers and many had opened up about how tough it had become for them by the end of the tour.&nbsp;

Thus, it remains to be seen how the forthcoming Ashes 2021 will go ahead or will Root &amp; Co. simply boycott the upcoming edition. For the unversed, Ashes 2019 had ended in a 2-2 scoreline, which provided enthralling contest between bat and ball throughout the English summer.

Joe Root-led England on verge of boycotting Ashes 2021 citing strict bio-bubble life: Reports

India and England were involved in a high-voltage second Test, at Lord's, which ended with Virat Kohli-led India coming on top of hosts by a whopping 151-run margin to go 1-0 up in the five-match series, being held in England and Wales. While the match had several memorable moments, Jasprit Bumrah's relentless fast-bowling spell -- comprising a barrage of bouncers -- to England's James Anderson during the home side's first innings became a huge talking point.&nbsp;

Following Bumrah's bouncers to Anderson, who was caught off guard by the Indian speedster's extra pace and bounce, things got heated up between the two sides. After England managed a slender 27-run lead over India and the fiery face-off between Bumrah-Anderson ended on Day 3, Joe Root-led England tried to come hard on Bumrah but paid the price as it Kohli &amp; Co. replied with much intent to script a historic comeback on the final day and win the Test by 151 runs.&nbsp;

Nonetheless, as per a report in The Telegraph, it has been claimed that things turned ugly between India and England following the Bumrah-Anderson face-off on Day 3 of the Lord's Test.&nbsp;

India and England&nbsp;players were reportedly involved in a 'bust-up' in the Lord's long room after the conclusion of Day 3's play during the second Test, which ended on August 16. The report referred to the incident as a 'bust-up' and claimed that the players from both camps&nbsp;were seen arguing on their way to their dressing rooms and the confrontation continued even in the Lord's long room.

"Confrontations in the Lord's Long Room - the hallowed inner sanctum of English cricket - are almost unheard of," stated the report from The Telegraph', also claiming that the two captains -- Kohli and Root -- were also believed to be involved in a heated exchange.

Following Bumrah-Anderson face-off, India came out to bat in their second essay, trailing England by 27 runs. The hosts had their noise ahead on the final day as India were reduced to 209-8, leading by 182 runs, when Bumrah-Mohammed Shami battled the short-ball ploy versus the English pacers and set-up a daunting 272-run target for the hosts.

England fell like nine pins, in response,&nbsp;to fold for 120 and lose the Test by 151 runs. The third Test commences at Headingley, Leeds from August 25 (Wednesday).

However, there will be no excuses when it comes to results from the India series onwards."

Nick Compton roared into the international scene with his strong technique and scored back-to-back Test centuries for England in 2013 away Test series against New Zealand, in Dunedin and Wellington. However, he couldn’t cement his spot in the England Test side and managed to play 16 Tests for his country. Compton has now revealed that he battled depression over the last five-six years after being left out of the England team.

Compton, while opening up about the illness, said that depression is something that creeps up on you and is not easily understood by you and others while adding that is why it took some time to come to terms and make a transition to a new life.&nbsp;

"There always comes a point in one’s career when things can’t be more difficult. And there’s no doubt that when I was left out of the England team, I did struggle with depression over the last 5-6 years. It’s something that creeps up on you, something that’s not easily understood by yourself &amp; others. So, it’s taken some time to come terms to that &amp; make the transition to a new life,” Compton said on an Instagram live show “Say Yash to Sports”.

And there’s no doubt that when I was left out of the England team, I did struggle with depression over the last 5-6 years. England's Nick Compton opens up about battling depression for 'last 5-6 years'

England players could tentatively start their outdoor skill-based training in the coming weeks with the ECB eyeing resumption of international cricket with a series against West Indies in July, said its director of cricket Ashley Giles.

However, as per health directive issued by government wing, the players -- across all sports in UK -- will have an option to "opt out" of training if they have any apprehensions of health risk.

"These are the very first tentative steps back to playing cricket," Giles was quoted as saying by ESPN Cricinfo, indicating that it could be done in controlled environment.

"This is individual-based training, so in many ways we should be able to get control of the environment so it's safer to go back to practice than it is to go to the supermarket. It should be that controlled an environment."

However, as per protocols issued by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), players will have an option.

"All athletes and support staff should be engaged in a 1:1 check-in prior to resumption of organised step one training to ensure they have understood the sport specific risks and mitigations, training site protocols in place, are physically and mentally well enough to engage in return to training and have actively 'opted in' to engaging in step one return to training," the document stated.

"It will be for individual sports to agree with their athletes any conditions for their return. All athletes and staff should also be clear on their route to 'opt out' of the organised training environment under Step One conditions at any time without unreasonable steps being taken against them consequently."

Even the ECB Director agreed that they have to create an environment where West Indies and Pakistan both feel safe while travelling to the United Kingdom.

"It can be quite scary but we are doing everything we possibly can to answer all of West Indies' questions. We will be speaking to Pakistan as well and mitigate as much risk as we possibly can. We can't mitigate all risk but as much as possible to get guys comfortable."

However, Giles assured that a complete risk assessment would be done before taking the plunge.

"We are also outside where we know the risks are far less. We will certainly carry out the right risk assessments at the venues. We will make sure all the staff are trained and that we have the right equipment, including PPE [personal protective equipment]. We will make sure everything is there for the guys to go about their business as safely as possible.

"Would I be confident if I were a West Indies player? I would be nervous, certainly, but we are all nervous, aren't we? I'm not making light of this but there are risks every time you go outside the house. We need to mitigate as many of the risks as we possibly can."

Nobody doubted&nbsp;England's title credentials in their home World Cup after the spectacular metamorphosis of Eoin Morgan's side into a white-ball juggernaut since their embarrassing exit from the 2015 tournament.

But few anticipated the drama that would mark their crowning moment as they ended a 44-year wait for a maiden 50-over World Cup title at a mesmerised Lord's.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/englands-ben-stokes-travels-rocky-road-en-route-success-245836">Stokes</a>'s international future had been in doubt after he was involved in a court case over a fight outside a nightclub, but with that behind him, he returned to the fold in spectacular style.

In the final, he channelled his inner gladiator to almost single-handedly drag&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/new-zealand-draw-second-test-with-england-win-series-265850">England</a>&nbsp;to a tie with New Zealand as, after six weeks of cricket, the game was decided by a Super Over.

That too ended level but&nbsp;England&nbsp;knew it would be enough to win the trophy on the obscure boundary countback rule, triggering wild celebrations at the home of cricket and heated debate about the fairness of the rule.

Defeated captain Kane Williamson, adjudged player of the tournament, handled gracefully the heartbreak that cemented New Zealand's reputation as the tournament's perennial bridesmaids.

Three months after the July 14 final, the game's governing body discarded the rule, prompting a sarcastic response from New Zealand's Jimmy Neesham.

"Next on the agenda: Better binoculars for the ice spotters on the Titanic," tweeted the all-rounder who faced five of the six deliveries from Jofra Archer in that fateful Super Over.

Stokes&nbsp;also lit up the Ashes series.

After&nbsp;England&nbsp;had been bowled out for 67 and were running out of batsmen in their second innings, he smashed an incredible unbeaten 135 to secure an astonishing victory in the third Test at Headingley.

His heroics earned him the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, but even the great all-rounder had to bow to&nbsp;Smith&nbsp;when it came to dominating the series.

&nbsp;

ASHES REDEMPTION

In a drawn series, Australia retained the Ashes largely because&nbsp;Smith&nbsp;redeemed himself in extraordinary fashion after the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa last year.

Stripped of the captaincy and smeared in ignominy after the Cape Town fiasco,&nbsp;Smith&nbsp;became Australia's immovable rock as he amassed 774 runs in seven innings at an average of 110, despite missing the third Test with a concussion.

Financial powerhouse India lost in the World Cup semi-finals but flexed their muscles in the long format. Virat Kohli and his men top the confused and confusing World Test Championship table with seven wins in as many matches, including their first pink-ball Test against Bangladesh last month.

That victory marked their 12th consecutive Test series win at home.

In other significant developments, women's T20 got the nod to feature in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, while Test cricket returned to Pakistan after more than a decade with a two-match series against Sri Lanka.

The game continued to grapple with corruption issues and Bangladesh captain Shakib-Al-Hasan was given a two-year ban, one of which is suspended, for failing to report fixing approaches.

Player-board disputes flared up in Bangladesh and South Africa, the latter also grappling with a tricky transition after quick Dale Steyn quit Test cricket while batsman Hashim Amla and leg-spinner Imran Tahir retired altogether.

The game also lost former&nbsp;England&nbsp;captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/former-england-captain-bob-willis-dies-at-70-266269">Bob Willis</a>, one of the heroes of the classic 1981 Ashes series who died of cancer aged 70 this month.

Fuelled by Stokes, foiled by Smith: England headline 2019 act

A dramatic England collapse which saw five wickets fall for only 10 runs allowed New Zealand to snatch a 14-run victory in their Twenty20 international in Nelson Tuesday.

It also put New Zealand 2-1 ahead in the series with two games to play.

England were on track to overhaul New Zealand's 180 when they reached 139 for two in the 15th over, with captain Eoin Morgan in full flight as he cracked sixes off consecutive Mitchell Santner deliveries.

But with England needing 42 off the remaining 31 deliveries Santner turned the match when he had Morgan caught by Colin Munro off the final ball of the over.

Dawid Malan (55) and James Vince (49) had laid a solid foundation for England at the top of the innings.

But Morgan's dismissal started a collapse which saw Munro run out Sam Billings for one in the following over before Blair Tickner removed Vince.

In the space of two deliveries, Lockie Ferguson bowled Lewis Gregory without scoring and had Sam Curran caught for two leaving Tom Curran and Saqib Mahmood to struggle through to the end.

"That's one that got away," England captain Morgan said, pointing to the lack of experience in his squad.&nbsp;

"We were in control for the whole chase until we were three or four down, probably that's a lack of experience. The guys need to get more games into them at this level."

Ferguson and Tickner both finished with two for 25 while spinner Santner and Ish Sodhi took a wicket apiece.

"It could have gone either way at the halfway mark. But we knew if we could keep taking wickets it would be touch for them," New Zealand captain Tim Southee said.

A sound middle-order partnership by Colin de Grandhomme and Ross Taylor laid the basis for New Zealand after Martin Guptill had given them a flying start with 33 off 17 deliveries.

Man-of-the-match de Grandhomme smacked 55 off 35 while Taylor produced a more sedate 27 from 24 in a 66-run stand after New Zealand were three down in the eighth over.

It was a better performance by England in the field with a much-improved catching effort which accounted for four of the seven wickets. But the bowling discipline dropped as New Zealand benefited from eight wides and two no balls.

Dramatic collapse in end overs hurt England as New Zealand take 2-1 lead in T20 series

England paceman Jofra Archer has been awarded a central contract for Test and white-ball cricket for the first time after making an impact during the World Cup and the Ashes.

Archer, 24, was England's leading wicket-taker in their triumphant World Cup campaign. He then took 22 wickets at an average of 20.27 in four Tests against Australia. His bowling touched speeds in the mid-90-miles-per-hour range in a scintillating debut international summer.

The Barbados-born Archer, who only became England qualified earlier this year, is one of 10 players to receive a Test deal for the 2019/20 season. Another is opener Rory Burns, who cemented his spot at the top of the order with some battling performances in the Ashes.

Spin duo Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid have lost their central Test contracts but are in a list of 12, also including Joe Denly, to be handed less lucrative white-ball deals.

Moeen was dropped from the World Cup squad towards the end of the group stage before a dismal showing in the Ashes opener. He did not appear for the rest of the series.

Rashid was a regular for England in the Test side last year but lost his place during the winter tour of the West Indies and was unused against Australia, although he is a regular in captain Eoin Morgan's white-ball set-up.

Test contracts: J. Anderson (Lancashire), J. Archer (Sussex), J. Bairstow (Yorkshire), S. Broad (Nottinghamshire), R. Burns (Surrey), J. Buttler (Lancashire), S. Curran (Surrey), J. Root (Yorkshire), B. Stokes (Durham), C. Woakes (Warwickshire).

England's Jofra Archer rewarded with contracts after impressive debut season

England captain Eoin Morgan says winning a home&nbsp;World&nbsp;Cup&nbsp;could do wonders for cricket in the sport's birthplace as he prepares to lead his team in their tournament opener <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-world-cup-2019-theres-a-lot-more-bigger-things-than-winning-and-losing-cricket-games-says-faf-du-plessis-222584">against South Africa</a>.

England are top of the one-day international rankings and favourites to lift a trophy they have never yet won in its 44-year-history -- a far cry from their woeful first-round exit at the 2015&nbsp;World&nbsp;Cup&nbsp;in Australia and New Zealand.

Television coverage of cricket in Britain has been largely hidden behind a paywall since England won the 2005 Ashes but Morgan believes a&nbsp;World&nbsp;Cup&nbsp;win would break through to a new audience.&nbsp;

"It would mean a huge amount. The&nbsp;World&nbsp;Cup&nbsp;alone raises the profile of the game and is a platform for every young kid in this country to have a hero or have the inspiration to pick up a ball or a bat," Morgan told reporters at the Oval on Wednesday.

"To go on and win it, I couldn't imagine what that would do," the former Ireland batsman added.

'Brilliant' Southgate

The England cricket squad and backroom staff have spent time with England football manager Gareth Southgate, whose side revitalised interest and affection in the national team on their way to the semi-finals of last year's soccer&nbsp;World&nbsp;Cup&nbsp;in Russia.

"We did do a session with Gareth, it was brilliant," recalled Morgan.

"He got up and talked about his journey with the team in and around the&nbsp;World&nbsp;Cup, but in the build-up, as well, and how they built bigger expectations and came together more as a group.&nbsp;

"I think everybody within the room listening who has been involved with our team over the last four years recognised that -- we started exactly where they did. Recognised what had happened in the past, drawn a line under it, tried to do things differently and move forward and enjoyed the challenge of that."

But the expectations surrounding England's men's football and cricket teams are wide apart, with Morgan saying his side had received a very different reaction when they were beaten by Pakistan in the 2017 semi-finals of the one-day Champions Trophy in Cardiff.

"It's amazing. He (Southgate) did brilliantly. Got to the semi-final and everybody says it's great. We got knocked out of the Champions Trophy semi-final, and we're crap," added Morgan to laughter from the assembled media.

England may have suffered several injury scares in recent weeks, including his own dislocated finger, but Morgan said all of his 15-man squad were available to face the Proteas at the Oval.

"We've no injury concerns and we have a full bill of health for tomorrow," he said.

With a round-robin group stage in prospect, Morgan had no time for talk of making a statement against South Africa.

"A win under any circumstances," he said when asked what success would look like at the Oval on Thursday.

"We did do a session with Gareth, it was brilliant," recalled Morgan. "He got up and talked about his journey with the team in and around the World Cup, but in the build-up, as well, and how they built bigger expectations and came together more as a group. "I think everybody within the room listening who has been involved with our team over the last four years recognised that -- we started exactly where they did. Recognised what had happened in the past, drawn a line under it, tried to do things differently and move forward and enjoyed the challenge of that." But the expectations surrounding England's men's football and cricket teams are wide apart, with Morgan saying his side had received a very different reaction when they were beaten by Pakistan in the 2017 semi-finals of the one-day Champions Trophy in Cardiff. Watch: Jamie Alter's report from ground zero ahead of the opening match between England and South Africa × Morgan said England's team had been selected but would not be revealed until the toss, with fast bowlers Liam Plunkett, Mark Wood and Tom Curran appearing to be competing for one place.

Eoin Morgan says World Cup win for hosts could have huge impact on English cricket

England captain Eoin&nbsp;Morgan&nbsp;will undergo "a precautionary X-ray" after injuring his left index finger in training, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced on Friday.

Morgan&nbsp;was practising with his teammates at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton ahead of Saturday's unofficial World Cup warm-up against Australia when he took a blow during catching drills.

"Eoin&nbsp;Morgan&nbsp;took a knock to his left index finger fielding this morning. He is going to hospital after practice for a precautionary X-ray," said a brief statement from the ECB.

Morgan, 32, was one of 14 players preparing at Hampshire's ground, with Joe Root absent on personal business.

England have climbed to the top of the one-day international rankings under the leadership of&nbsp;Morgan, who is also a key member of their powerful batting line-up.

England captain Eoin Morgan to have X-ray in pre-World Cup scare

India batting great Sunil Gavaskar believes England are a transformed one-day international side since their shock exit from the 2015 World Cup and rates them as favourites to win their maiden crown on home soil in July.

Eoin Morgan's side, whose quest for a first 50-overs title begins against South Africa at The Oval on May 30, top the world rankings enter the tournament as the one of the most consistent teams in the format.

"England are the favourites. Simply because of the way they are playing cricket, the complete turnaround in their cricketing attitude and approach after their disastrous 2015 World Cup," Gavaskar told Reuters in an interview.

"England have got a very good team, they have got lots of confidence. You have seen them in all the recent matches and they have been playing outstanding cricket."

Morgan's men have played a fearless brand of cricket in the recent years and since the start of 2018 have come out on top in bilateral ODI series against World Cup holders Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and India.

Gavaskar believes having home advantage could also be telling after Australia won as hosts in 2015 and India did the same four years earlier.

"If you go by what has happened in the last couple of World Cups, the host team has won," he added.

"But, of course, in cricket anything can happen. While England start the favourites, there are other teams which are also playing some good cricket."

Gavaskar was speaking after pledging to sponsor 34 paediatric heart surgeries for economically deprived children at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani International Centre for Child Heart Care at the satellite city of Navi Mumbai.

The semi-rural setting was a far cry from the glamorous environs of Gavaskar's normal workplace as a TV media pundit and rather than former cricketers, he was surrounded by medical professionals who treat children for free.

His study of the game from the commentary box has convinced him that holders Australia, with Steve Smith and David Warner back in the fold after their ball-tampering bans, and a resurgent West Indies are other title contenders.

Virat Kohli's India side will also post a big challenge, the 69-year-old felt.

"I think these are the four teams that can really stand out," added former India captain and opening batsman Gavaskar, who once held the record for most test runs and centuries in the longest format.

Gavaskar said a hot English summer could add to the excitement of the World Cup as the pitches would be drier and make shot-making easier for the batsmen.

The format for the May 30-July 14 tournament has also seen a change from the previous years with all 10 teams playing each other before the top four advance to the semi-finals.

"This should be a very, very interesting tournament and I think the format is the best you can have because you are playing every team unlike in two groups," said Gavaskar, who was part of the Indian team that beat the mighty West Indies to win the 1983 World Cup.

"You can have a bogey team with whom you lose in bilateral matches but they could be in another group and you might never play them.

"So you can win without having played your bogey team (in the past) while this format, where each team plays each other, I think is the best."

A Guardian report on Friday claimed Hales, named last week in England's preliminary World Cup squad, is serving a 21-day ban from cricket for the drug incident.

The 30-year-old has been sanctioned under the England and Wales Cricket Board's disciplinary policy for a second time, according to the report.

A spokesman for Hales on Friday confirmed the Nottinghamshire batsman had been suspended "following an off-field incident last year".

The ban is a blow for Hales, who has been selected in the England squad for the forthcoming one-day series against Pakistan ahead of the World Cup.

Hales will still be involved with England's training camp in Cardiff this weekend, with the team's first one-day match of the summer coming against Ireland in Dublin next Friday.

"He will be joining the squad in preparation for next week's games and will be available for selection," the spokesman said.&nbsp;

Nottinghamshire issued a statement last week confirming Hales had "made himself unavailable for selection for personal reasons", and "no timetable has been set for his return to action".

As a consequence, Hales missed the start of the national One-Day Cup campaign.

Last year, Hales was suspended and fined by the ECB following his involvement with Ben Stokes in an incident outside a Bristol nightclub during September 2017.&nbsp;

Stokes was subsequently found not guilty of affray following a six-day trial at Bristol Crown Court.

The drugs violation is believed to have been detected after Hales underwent a hair follicle test, which all professional cricketers have at the start and finish of every season

For a first drugs offence, which is treated as a health and welfare issue, players are offered advice and support with only the county director of cricket being notified.

A second violation can invoke a three-week ban and a five percent fine of the player's annual salary, at which point the player's county is informed, as well as the ECB chief executive, Tom Harrison, and PCA chief executive, David Leatherdale.

Hales could be a valuable member of Eoin Morgan's England side as they attempt to win their first 50-over World Cup.

Hales memorably hit 147 from 92 balls when England scored a record 481-6 in a win against Australia at Trent Bridge last year.

Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan faces a race against time to be fit for the Cricket World Cup after he was ruled out of the limited-overs series in England with an illness.

The 20-year-old has played 34 one-day internationals for Pakistan and was included in their 15-man squad for the May 30-July 14 World Cup in England and Wales.

The 1992 champions will play a lone Twenty20 international and five ODIs on their tour of England, which begins on May 5.

"Wrist spinner Shadab Khan has been ruled out of the series against England after tests revealed a virus that will require treatment and rest for, at least, four weeks," the Pakistan Cricket Board said in a statement.

The board said it would set up appointments with specialists in England to help Shadab, who is also a useful lower-order batsman, recover in time for Pakistan's World Cup opener against West Indies on May 31.

All teams are allowed to make changes to their World Cup squads until May 23. Pakistan selectors have already put batsman Asif Ali and seamer Mohammad Amir on standby should they have to make changes to their squad.

England have not picked uncapped all-rounder Jofra Archer in a preliminary 15-man World Cup squad but have named him in squads for the warm-up games against Pakistan and Ireland.

Barbados-born Archer, who shone for Sussex last season and in Australia's Big Bash Twenty20 competition for Hobart Hurricanes, is eligible for national selection under new England and Wales Cricket Board residency rules.

He could get a World Cup call-up if he impresses in the warm-up games as changes can be made to the squad until May 23, seven days before their tournament opener against South Africa at The Oval.

"The selection panel has been impressed with Jofra Archer's performances in domestic and franchise cricket. He is a very talented and exciting cricketer," national selector Ed Smith said.

England play Ireland in a one-dayer on May 3 before a five-match ODI series and a Twenty20 against Pakistan.

"In line with ICC (International Cricket Council regulations, we have to name a preliminary squad of 15 for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup before April 23," Smith added.

"However, all 17 players named in the ODIs against Pakistan can stake a claim to be in the final 15-man squad, finalised at the end of that series."

Squad: Eoin Morgan (captain), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper), Tom Curran, Joe Denly, Alex Hales, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.

Former skipper Kevin Pietersen reckons that if hot and dry conditions persist in England, it will work more in favour of sub-continent teams during the upcoming World Cup but green surfaces would be an advantage for the hosts.

Pietersen said last summer was one of the hottest with hardly any rain.&nbsp;

"We started a Test against India in 2000 something. On day one it was an absolutely green surface but at the end of day two it was completely dry. It never rained but the moisture that was was sucked by the system dry completely and depleting any grass on the wicket.&nbsp;

"If the conditions are like they were last summer, then I can say sub-continental teams will have a massive role to play in the World Cup. If they are not and it's horrible and green and seaming all over, it will play into England's favour," said Pietersen.

However, Pietersen fears that if the ball swung as it did on the West Indies, England could be in trouble.&nbsp;

"The one downside for England though is that although they have the license to slog from ball one, but in those swinging and seaming conditions it's quite difficult as we saw in the West Indies at Barbados where the ball did a bit and the West Indies knocked over England (in the Test)," he said.

Batting great Brian Lara felt that the West Indies, recently, have become strong at home but cautioned that it was consistency and team work which could see the team through in the World Cup.

"The series against England has given us all in the West indies some hope. We have become strong at home. But I am not going to be fooled by what we did against England. We have a team that understands the conditions at home now. But four months ago we were terrible, but I am happy to see we have made that little progress in our cricket,&nbsp;said the former stylish left-handed batsman.

"We have got a few match winners but in English conditions, we need a bit more than match winners to win the World Cup. We need a team with great consistency and if we reach the knock out stages we can knock out any team. It gives us a little bit of chance but would like to see the team selection first."

Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene was not happy with the way things have gone in his country in the run-up to the mega event with so many chopping and changing.

"Usually we plan for the World Cup years ahead - 12 months ahead&nbsp;and know what our combinations are. This time there is the (upcoming) provincial tournament to finalise the World Cup squad. That shows inconsistency in the approach," he said candidly.

"It's not alarming as there is talent, some good players who have had experience of World Cup before and have been in finals before. Sri Lanka always turns out for the World Cup with a mentality that they can win. Leading up to the World Cup, we have not done well. We have won a handful of matches over the last five months both in Sri Lanka and away&nbsp;which won't give any confidence."

Jayawardene said a settled top-order is crucial and Sri Lanka are still not sure about it.&nbsp;

"There has not been a consistent selection process. We had like eight different opening partnerships. Top four guys are very crucial in those conditions. I think they need to find solutions for that, some soul searching. Hopefully, this domestic tournament is not going to make a huge impact in the selection process. You need to back the guys who have done the thing in the past. I hope common sense will prevail," he added.

It never rained but the moisture that was was sucked by the system dry completely and depleting any grass on the wicket. "If the conditions are like they were last summer, then I can say sub-continental teams will have a massive role to play in the World Cup. If they are not and it's horrible and green and seaming all over, it will play into England's favour," said Pietersen. However, Pietersen fears that if the ball swung as it did on the West Indies, England could be in trouble. But four months ago we were terrible, but I am happy to see we have made that little progress in our cricket, said the former stylish left-handed batsman. "We have got a few match winners but in English conditions, we need a bit more than match winners to win the World Cup. We need a team with great consistency and if we reach the knock out stages we can knock out any team. It gives us a little bit of chance but would like to see the team selection first." Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene was not happy with the way things have gone in his country in the run-up to the mega event with so many chopping and changing. "Usually we plan for the World Cup years ahead - 12 months ahead and know what our combinations are. We have won a handful of matches over the last five months both in Sri Lanka and away which won't give any confidence." Jayawardene said a settled top-order is crucial and Sri Lanka are still not sure about it.

Hot conditions in England would be an advantage for sub-continent teams: Kevin Pietersen

Australian fast bowling great Glenn McGrath Wednesday picked India and England as the favourites to win the upcoming World Cup and said that the bowling unit will hold key to the fortunes of Virat Kohli's men in the 50-over showpiece.

McGrath also said Australia's recent limited-overs series win over India here have improved their chances of winning the World Cup which begins on May 30 in the United Kingdom.&nbsp;

"The top two teams are going to be England and India. England had a tough time in West Indies and India lost to Australia. So, the competition will be tighter. Australia's chances have improved after their ODI and T20 win over India," McGrath, who is director of coaching at the MRF Pace Foundation here, told reporters.

"The fact that Australia won the T20 series and the ODIs against India in India will boost their confidence. With those two (Steve Smith and David Warner) coming back, the team will be strengthened and those players were missed during the Australian summer," he added.

McGrath said he was not surprised with the "exceptional" show of Indian pacers during their Australian tour earlier this year.

"I was not surprised ... They did exceptionally well. They bowled well as a unit and there was no weak link there. I think the pace they bowled at, the consistency and control, they really impressed me," said the 49-year-old who took 563 Test wickets in 124 matches between 1993 and 2007.

"Ishant (Sharma) is very experienced, Bhuvneshwar is your senior bowler and he needs to be bowling well. He is an intelligent cricketer and the (Mohammed) Shami is doing well.

"I was particularly impressed with Bumrah, he was exceptional. The way he bowls his yorkers and if there is some reverse swing, he is going to be dangerous. And the pace he bowls the yorkers makes him really unique. So, the bowlers have to perform if India is to win (the World Cup)," McGrath added.

The Australian legend said Indian captain Virat Kohli would be remembered just like a Brian Lara or a Sachin Tendulkar after he finishes his career.

"Kohli is a class player. He is easily one of the best going around now. By the end of his career he will be held up there alongside the likes of Lara and Tendulkar. As a captain and player he is quite aggressive. He likes getting involved in the game. As long as the emotions do not run too much and if he is playing well, it is fine. He has matured a lot and he knows his game.&nbsp;

"He has got the respect of his players. Watching the way he batted in Australia, the only thing I would have said to the home bowlers is I would have preferred them to bowl a little bit short and be more aggressive when he first came out to bat. A lot of times they tried to swing the ball and if it is full, he is in complete control. There is no obvious weakness in his game. To get him out early is a massive bonus," McGrath said.

He also felt that compatriots Steve Smith and David Warner, who were banned for a year in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa, would do well on their return in the IPL for their respective franchises -- Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad.&nbsp;

"I think Smith and Warner will do well in the IPL after being out of the game for 12 months. They played a few T20 competitions around the world but they are keen and hungry. They are ready to prove they are good enough to continue playing international cricket," he said.

McGrath said the IPL would be a good preparation for the players ahead of the World Cup as it will help players get the mindset on the shorter version of the game.

"Indian conditions are very different to the English conditions but it will help in getting some confidence."

On the issue of managing the players' workload with the World Cup approaching, he said it should not be much of a problem and depends a lot of the players themselves.

"I really enjoyed my two years in the IPL. Managing the workload should not be too much of a problem as it is not huge. It is different intensity, obviously there is only four overs and it is up to the individual to recover. If they can recover well, they will be fine," he said.&nbsp;

India, England favourites to win 2019 World Cup: Glenn McGrath

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar believes England have a very good chance to win the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

"If you go by the history of last two or three World Cups, in 2011 the host nation India won, in 2015 host nation Australia won. In 2019, there is a very good chance that England will win the World Cup," Gavaskar said Tuesday.

Gavaskar, however, pointed out that he is not saying England will win the 50-over tournament.

"There is a very good chance they (England) will win the World Cup," he said.The former cricketer, who debuted and played his last ODI cricket against England, is the first player to amass 10,000 Test runs.

He had also played for Somerset, one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England.

Meanwhile, the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to India, Dominic Asquith said he is hopeful that England men' s team will emulate their female compatriots, referring to England`s women cricketers victory over India at T20Is."Last week, we celebrated International Women`s Day.

For England's women cricketers it coincided with the victory over India`s T20 team," Asquith said."Over the course of this summer, we are delighted that we will host India and of course teams at the cricket World Cup.

On Sunday, June 30 we probably all know already there will be quite a match at Edgbaston. And we will see if England`s men can emulate their female compatriots," he said.

Sunil Gavaskar picks England as 2019 ICC World Cup favourites

England will go into this year's World Cup as the favourites. This can be considered a remarkable change in fortunes considering their performance in the previous two World Cups in 2011 and 2015.

Since the World Cup 2015, England have won 14 bilateral series out of 20.

England's batting approach was considered traditional since the Cricket World Cup 2015, as they struggled with posting big scores on the board playing with an old fashioned approach.

But since, the appointment of Trevor Bayliss as the head coach, England went through a tremendous turn-around changing their batting approach, playing attacking cricket from the first ball of the match.

England management who has been previously guilty of choosing Test players for the ODI's and not picking up the right players for the format changed their approach and started picking up specialists for the ODI format.

Jason Roy, Alex Hales, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler are all familiar names in the ODI format and their approach to the game has benefitted the England team. These players start going after the bowlers from the first ball putting the opponent under pressure.

There have been five occasions when a team has posted more than 400 runs on the board since World Cup 2015, and out of those five, four have been posted by England.

It was in the last year that England recorded the highest ever ODI score of 481 runs against Australia at Trent Bridge.

England's bowlers Liam Plunkett, David Willey, Adil Rashid have also put in game-changing performances with the ball for the team allowing the team to prosper in all kind of pitches and conditions.

The captain Eoin Morgan who was the part of Cricket World Cup 2015 debacle in which the team suffered a loss against Bangladesh to get themselves knocked out, has seen a significant change in the team.

He along with Trevor Bayliss bought a breath of fresh air into the team by picking up specialists and allowing the team to prosper by giving them full freedom. The captain has always been seen promoting giving freedom to players to express themselves.

Morgan became the highest scorer for England in the ODI format as well.

England with this attacking approach are the prime favourites for the World Cup, but the team is also susceptible to bouncy tracks, which was evident in the last ODI of the five-match series against Windies.

The team has been prone to batting collapses, which the management knows they need to rectify before the World Cup.

In Champions trophy 2017, England suffered a heavy collapse in the semi-final against Pakistan resulting in their knockout from the tournament. They were also criticised for playing with their traditional approach in an important clash which probably cost them the match.

The World Cup will be played in England so home-pressure will pretty much be there, but the team has the best chance of winning the World Cup for the first time in their history.

England's renaissance in ODI's makes them favourites for the 2019 World Cup

West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell is set to make his first international appearance since last August after being named in the hosts' squad on Monday for the upcoming fourth and fifth one-day internationals against England.

The 30-year-old has been struggling with a knee problem, and although chief selector Courtney Browne admitted his fast bowling may be hampered, he said his lower-order hitting could prove crucial.

Russell takes the place of Kemar Roach, who was ruled out of the series with a back injury.

"We believe Russell will add value to the squad," said former Windies wicket-keeper Browne.

"We are well aware that although Andre's bowling may be limited due to a knee problem, his tremendous batting ability to power the ball in the back end of the game will be an asset to the team."&nbsp;

The five-match series is level at 1-1 heading into Monday's third ODI in Grenada.

The Windies' performances in the opening two matches and their preceding 2-1 Test series victory have raised hopes that they could be surprise title challengers at this year's World Cup in England and Wales, which starts on May 30.
