<h2>TikTok faces potential ban</h2>
TikTok is facing a potential ban in the US this Sunday unless its Chinese owner Byte-Dance sell off its American operations.
Earlier, the Associated Press reported that the ban on TikTok will not be enforced by outgoing US President Joe Biden, and the matter will now be left for the incoming Trump administration to handle.
TikTok, which boasts a user base of over 170 million Americans, as per reports, has started working to halt operations on Sunday (Jan 20). Despite the app's popularity, concerns over data security and its ties to China have made it a focal point of national security debates leading to the looming ban. &nbsp;
The talks came three days ahead of Trump's January 20 inauguration.&nbsp;
It comes as it was reported in the media that Vice President Han Zheng will represent Jinping at the inauguration ceremony in Washington DC.&nbsp;

Trump holds phone talks with 'chairman Xi' over TikTok as potential ban looms

Human Rights Watch on Thursday blasted the "craven unwillingness" of governments to defend international norms and institutions last year, while warning that Donald Trump's return to power will compound pressure on the world's "fraying" rights system.
From Gaza to Sudan, Haiti and Ukraine -- 2024 saw rights violations "at the most extreme," HRW chief Tirana Hassan told AFP in an interview ahead of the Thursday release of the organization's annual report.
Worldwide elections and deadly conflicts over the past year challenged the "integrity of democratic institutions and the principles of human rights and humanitarian law" -- but many governments "have failed the test," the 500-page document said.

It noted mounting repression in Russia, India and Venezuela as well as continuing devastation from the wars in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine.
These conflicts and other humanitarian crises, marked by the "craven unwillingness of many governments to stand up to suffering and abuse," exposed the "fraying of international norms meant to protect civilians and the devastating human cost when they are flouted," according to the report.
It called out authoritarian governments -- including in Russia and Mali -- for violating democratic norms, while also slamming liberal democracies, saying they were "not always reliable champions of human rights at home or abroad."

Hassan pointed to US President Joe Biden continuing to provide Israel with weapons, despite mounting evidence they have "been used in the commission of war crimes and the killing of civilians" in Gaza.
She said 2024 showed "how inconsistent the commitment to human rights" has been.
"That is very dangerous, because it sends a message that certain rights apply to some people and they don't to others," the Singapore-born lawyer said.

<h2>Trump 'vacuum'&nbsp;</h2>
With Trump's return to the US presidency, HRW expressed concern that his administration would "repeat and even magnify the serious rights violations of his first term."
Renewed attacks by Trump on minority rights, international law and multilateral institutions risk "emboldening illiberal leaders worldwide to follow suit," it warned.
Hassan said that a US retreat from multilateral systems under Trump's second term would create "a real vacuum, which is going to be filled by opportunistic actors like China" to advance their "anti-rights agenda."
"But it's not all doom and gloom," she said, pointing to some progress last year in international courts, such as South Africa's case against Israel over its war in Gaza.
Popular uprisings have also seen success in pushing back against authoritarian regimes, such as in Bangladesh, where longtime ruler Sheikh Hasina was ousted in August.
"These resistance movements highlight a crucial reality: the fight for rights is often driven by ordinary people, fed up with injustice and corruption, bringing together their collective power to compel governments to uphold basic rights and serve the people instead of their own interests," the HRW report said.
<h2>'Time to double down'&nbsp;</h2>
Hassan described the continued global fight for rights as "the challenge of our time."
While people can feel "overwhelmed by the horrors" occurring worldwide, "this isn't a time to look away, if anything, this is a time to double down."
"If there is one thing that 2024 taught us," Hassan said, it is that ignoring human rights violations is "not an academic exercise -- it is not simply a question of law.
"People's lives are impacted. People are dying, people are starving, people are being hurt."
HRW's report, which reviews the situation in about 100 countries, highlighted the "widespread atrocities" faced by civilians in Sudan, while Haiti has seen gang violence reach "catastrophic levels."
It also called out Israel for committing "crimes against humanity" and possibly "genocide" during the Gaza war.
At a ceremony to launch the report on Thursday, Hassan said "the heinous crimes" committed in the conflict "should not go unpunished."
"While yesterday Israeli officials and Hamas agreed to a multi-phase ceasefire, the heinous crimes committed on and since October 7, 2023, should not go unpunished," she said.

Trump's inauguration portrait is recreated version of his 2023 mugshot? Internet says so

The US is just days away from the official beginning of Donald Trump&rsquo;s presidency. The president-elect earlier said he would be a &ldquo;dictator&rdquo; in the White House but only for the first 24 hours. As the Trump administration&rsquo;s January 20 inauguration approaches, here are the top agendas that Trump will be focusing on in the first few hours of his presidency.
<h2>1) Travel bans and shutting US-Mexico border</h2>
Soon after he is sworn in as president, Trump is expected to sign a series of executive orders aimed at reinstating his controversial travel bans and shut down the southern border with Mexico. &ldquo;I want to close the border,&rdquo; Trump had declared in December 2023. &ldquo;On Day One of the Trump presidency, I will restore the travel ban.&rdquo;
<h2>2) Mass deportations</h2>
Trump has promised to set in motion the "largest mass deportation operation" in US history on the very first day of his administration. Trump team says the GOP leader will first target criminals, recent border crossers, and individuals who have been ordered to be deported by the courts.
<h2>3) Pardoning Jan 6 protesters</h2>
Last December, Trump declared he would be looking at Jan 6 convicts &ldquo;the first nine minutes&rdquo; of his administration. The GOP leader has vowed to act quickly, issuing pardons for many of the more than 1,500 individuals convicted of crimes regarding their involvement in Jan 6, 2021 riots.
<h2>4) Shoot down Biden&rsquo;s 'electric vehicle mandate'</h2>
Trump has also vowed to eliminate the "electric vehicle mandate" introduced by the Joe Biden administration. &ldquo;I will end the electric vehicle mandate on Day One,&rdquo; Trump declared in July last year at the Republican National Convention. The mandate forces automakers to sell more electric and hybrid vehicles.
<h2>5) Eliminate federal regulations</h2>
Trump also plans to end numerous federal regulations that he believes fuel inflation in the country and drive up the cost of living. &ldquo;On Day One, I will sign an executive order directing every federal agency to immediately remove every single burdensome regulation driving up the cost of goods,&rdquo; Trump said in October 2024.

Trump’s inauguration: THESE top leaders and billionaires will attend the mega event

Less than a week is left before United States (US) President-elect Donald Trump is officially sworn in. Post his handsome victory in the November 5, 2024, presidential election against Kamala Harris, Trump has made many proposals.
The proposals range from a demand to make Canada the 51st state of the US, regain control of the Panama Canal, and an offer to buy Greenland.
This is not the first time that Trump has offered to buy Greenland. He made the demand in 2019 as well, while serving as president.

Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has a history of both geopolitics and geoeconomics. Greenland lies between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.
<h2>US attempts on buying Greenland&mdash;not the first time</h2>
This is not the first time that Trump has made an offer to buy Greenland, and he is also not the first American president to do so.
Since the 19th century, the US has considered and, in fact, made several attempts to purchase Greenland.
Internal discussions within the US authorities about acquiring the island&nbsp;notably occurred in 1867, 1910, 1946, 1955, and 2019.
In Washington's eyes, Greenland is vital for national security. Post-World War II, the Truman administration was reported to have offered Denmark $100 million for the island.

A recent report by The New York Times (NYT) said that if Donald Trump succeeded in his plan to buy the island, the price of the purchase could be between $12.5 billion and $77 billion.&nbsp;
<h2>The geopolitics of the Arctic: Who is doing what?</h2>
Greenland is home to a large&nbsp;US space facility and is strategically important for Washington, lying on the shortest route from North America to Europe.
The island is geographically situated between the Northern Sea Route and the Northwest Passage, two Arctic shipping routes whose importance is growing as sea ice shrinks.&nbsp;
A report by The Conversation on Tuesday (January 14) said that by around 2050, a Transpolar Sea Route is likely to open through the central Arctic Ocean, passing Greenland&rsquo;s eastern shores.
Apart from Greenland, the US also has interests in the Arctic region.&nbsp;

According to a report by the White House in 2022, Washington's vision for the Arctic "protects and advances US interests in the region, including providing homeland security and defence, expanding economic opportunities, and upholding the international law."
But the US isn't the only foreign power interested in the Arctic. China and Russia are on the list too.
Russia has economic and military interests in the region. Meanwhile, China's Arctic policy outlines Beijing's approach to foreign relations with Arctic nations.
The policy also includes Beijing's plans to develop infrastructure, extend military capabilities, conduct research, and excavate resources within the Arctic Circle.
<h2>A look at the territorial acquisitions of the US</h2>
The US has made several territorial acquisitions since 1978.
These included the annexation of the Vermont Republic, the Louisiana Purchase from France, the purchase of Florida (East and West) from Spain, and the Mexica Cession from Mexico.

Trump is not the first US president to think about buying Greenland. A look at the geopolitics of the Arctic

Donald Trump's pick for national security adviser, Florida Representative Mike Waltz, on Wednesday (Jan 15) said the US president-elect was reviewing prospects to &ldquo;preserve&rdquo; TikTok.
Waltz's comments came in response to a Fox News anchor's question about a Washington Post report, which claimed that Trump was mulling an executive order to suspend the enforcement of a federal law that could potentially lead to a nationwide ban on TikTok by Sunday (Jan 19), affecting around 170 million users in America.
&ldquo;If the Supreme Court comes out with a ruling in favour of the law, President Trump has been very clear: Number one, TikTok is a great platform that many Americans use and has been great for his campaign and getting his message out. But number two, he&rsquo;s going to protect their data,&rdquo; Waltz said.
&ldquo;He&rsquo;s a deal maker. I don&rsquo;t want to get ahead of our executive orders, but we&rsquo;re going to create this space to put that deal in place," he added.
Last week, the Supreme Court gave a January 19 deadline to ByteDance that the company should either sell TikTok or face a ban in the country on the grounds of national security.

"In light of the novelty and difficulty of this case, the court should consider staying the statutory deadline to grant more breathing space to address these issues," Trump's legal team wrote, urging the court to give him "the opportunity to pursue a political resolution."
In his filing, Trump's attorney emphasised that the president-elect is not taking a position on the case's legal merits but is seeking flexibility for his administration to address the matter politically. &nbsp;
"President Trump takes no position on the underlying merits of this dispute," wrote John Sauer in the amicus curiae brief.
"Instead, he respectfully requests that the court consider staying the act's deadline for divestment of January 19, 2025, while it considers the merits of this case, thus permitting President Trump's incoming Administration the opportunity to pursue a political resolution of the questions at issue in the case."

Flags at the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/meta-ceo-mark-zuckerberg-to-co-host-reception-for-trumps-inauguration-8623368">US Capitol</a> will be raised to full-staff on Inauguration Day before being lowered again the next day to honour the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, House Speaker Mike Johnson said.
The decision by the Republican Speaker ensures that President-elect Donald Trump&rsquo;s second inauguration will not take place under a half-mast flag, something he had previously complained about.

&ldquo;On Jan. 20, the flags at the Capitol will fly at full-staff to celebrate our country coming together behind the inauguration of our 47th President, Donald Trump. The flags will be lowered back to half-staff the following day to continue honoring President Jimmy Carter,&rdquo; Johnson wrote on X.
Similar directives have been issued by Republican governors in at least five states, including Florida, Iowa, Alabama, Texas, and Tennessee, where US flags will also be raised to full-staff for the inauguration and lowered to half-staff on 21 January in Carter&rsquo;s memory.&nbsp;
While President Joe Biden&rsquo;s executive order mandates flag-lowering on federal properties, state governments are not legally required to follow suit, though many traditionally align with federal guidelines.
In a statement on Monday, Governor Greg Abbott (R-Texas) said, &ldquo;While we honour the service of a former president, we must also celebrate the service of an incoming President and the bright future ahead for the United States of America.&rdquo;

Trump, five days after Carter&rsquo;s death, voiced his objections on social media regarding flags potentially being at half-staff during his inauguration. He claimed, without evidence, that Democrats were &ldquo;giddy&rdquo; at the thought.
&ldquo;In any event, because of the death of President Jimmy Carter, the Flag may, for the first time ever during an inauguration of a future President, be at half-mast. Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let&rsquo;s see how it plays out,&rdquo; Trump wrote on Truth Social.

US President-elect Donald Trump&rsquo;s envoy for Middle East Steve Witkoff had a tense meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the weekend, eventually leading to a breakthrough in negotiations. Times of Israel reported citing two Arab officials that the Trump envoy was able to sway Netanyahu more than the outgoing Joe Biden administration did in the past one year.
<h2>Witkoff&rsquo;s peace efforts</h2>
Steve Witkoff has been in the Qatari capital Doha for past one week, trying to get Palestinian militant organisation Hamas and Israel on one page and secure a peace deal before January 20 inauguration of the new administration.
The Trump envoy reportedly flew to Israel on Saturday (Jan 11) and met with Netanyahu. During the meeting, Bibi was asked to accept key compromises required to move forward with the peace process, reported the Times of Israel.

Then on Monday (Jan 13), negotiating teams from both sides told mediators that they had agreed to hostage deal proposal in principle. Both sides have been trying working out the details regarding the implementation of the agreement since then.
<h2>Contentious issue</h2>
According to officials cited by the Israeli news outlet, one of the contentious issues that remain unresolved is the exact parameters of the IDF&rsquo;s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. Mediators are awaiting Israel&rsquo;s final map showcasing its withdraw plan.
The final peace deal may be announced Wednesday or Thursday (Jan 15-16) and the US, Qatar and Egypt are expected to issue a joint statement regarding the same, the two officials speculated.

Tense meet between Trump aide, Netanyahu did more for Gaza deal than Biden ever did: Report

A recent poll conducted by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) shows that Donald Trump&rsquo;s return as US President is being met with mixed reactions worldwide.
While, traditional US allies, such as European nations and South Korea, are concerned, countries like Russia, China, and Saudi Arabia which are not considered US-ally appear more optimistic.

The survey, spanning 24 countries, found that many view Trump as a potential peacemaker in international conflicts. However, in Europe and South Korea, there are fears that his leadership might weaken the "geopolitical West."
In the United Kingdom, only 15&nbsp;per cent of respondents felt positive about Trump&rsquo;s presidency improving their domestic security, while 54&nbsp;per cent expressed negative feelings. Additionally, half of those polled in the UK identified as &ldquo;Never Trump&rdquo; individuals, with only 15&nbsp;per cent welcoming his leadership.
South Korea showed the lowest optimism, with 67&nbsp;per cent of respondents saying they felt negatively about the impact of Trump&rsquo;s presidency on their country.

In contrast, India showed strong support, with 75&nbsp;per cent identifying as &ldquo;Trump Welcomers&rdquo; and 82&nbsp;per cent believing he would contribute positively to world peace.
<h2>Trump Welcomers vs Never Trumpers</h2>
The ECFR report categorises respondents into distinct groups based on their views. &ldquo;Trump Welcomers&rdquo; see him as a force for global peace and a better future for the US, while &ldquo;Never Trumpers&rdquo; hold the opposite opinion.
&ldquo;Peace Seekers&rdquo; believe he might improve global stability despite doubts about his domestic impact, while the &ldquo;Conflicted&rdquo; view his policies as favourable for Americans but potentially harmful internationally. 'Fake findings at 1 am,' Trump slams Jack Smith's report on Jan 6 case

US President-elect Donald Trump, on Monday (Jan 13), said that he is "very quickly" going to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin after taking office.&nbsp;
This will be the first meeting between both the leaders since Russia's war with Ukraine began in February 2022. Trump, however, did not specify a timeline for when they both will meet.
On being asked about his strategy to end the war, which has been ongoing for over 3 years now, Trump told Newsmax: "Well, there's only one strategy and it's up to Putin and I can't imagine he's too thrilled about the way it's gone because it hasn't gone exactly well for him either."
"And I know he wants to meet and I'm going to meet very quickly. I would've done it sooner but...you have to get into the office. For some of the things, you do have to be there."
US Congressman Mike Waltz, the incoming national security adviser, said on Sunday (Jan 12) that he expected a call between Trump and Putin in "the coming days and weeks."

<h2>Around 300 North Korean soldiers killed fighting Ukraine</h2>
Meanwhile, over 300 North Korean soldiers have lost their lives and 2,700 were injured while fighting Russia's war against Ukraine.
"The deployment of North Korean troops to Russia has reportedly expanded to include the Kursk region, with estimates suggesting that casualties among North Korean forces have surpassed 3,000," South Korean lawmaker Lee Seong-kweun claimed in comments to reporters, citing information from Seoul's National Intelligence Service.
The North Korean soldiers have also been ordered by Pyongyang to take their own lives rather than get captured, said Lee.
"Memos found on deceased soldiers indicate that the North Korean authorities pressured them to commit suicide or self-detonate before capture," he said.
One soldier, who was facing imminent capture, cried out "General Kim Jong Un" before attempting to blow himself up with a grenade, said Lee.
The analysis carried out by NIS unveiled that the soldiers from North Korea displayed a "lack of understanding of modern warfare," and Russia is using them in a manner which is leading to their "high number of casualties," said the lawmaker.

Donald Trump says will meet Russia's Vladimir Putin 'very quickly' after swearing-in ceremony

Outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's former ally and the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), Jagmeet Singh, shared a video on social media warning US President-elect Donald Trump over his remarks that Canada should become America's 51st state.
"I have a message for Donald Trump. Our country (Canada) is not for sale. Not now, not ever," Singh said in the video he posted on X.
He then said that Canadian people are proud of their country and will go to every extent to "fight like hell to defend it."
Singh highlighted his country's commitment to being a good neighbour, stating that Canada offered support to the United States during the devastating Los Angeles fires, which so far have claimed the lives of 24.
"Right now, with the forest fires ravaging homes, Canadian firefighters showed up. That is who we are. And we show up and support our neighbours."

"What could make you think that Canadians would ever give up the best country in the world &mdash; and make no mistake that is what we are &mdash; to join the United States?," he questioned further.
"If you think that threatening and insulting us is going to win us over, you really don't know a thing about us," Chretien wrote in the article. "We may look easy-going, mild-mannered. But make no mistake, we have spine and toughness."&nbsp;

Ex-US vice prez Mike Pence said THIS about his meeting with former boss Donald Trump

Switzerland has reportedly shown its willingness to host potential talks between US President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin if any such request emerges. According to a report by the Swiss daily Le Temps, Bern has conveyed its readiness to support Ukraine peace efforts to all stakeholders.
"Following the Burgenstock summit, Ukraine, Russia and the United States were regularly informed of our readiness to support any diplomatic efforts regarding the peace settlement," said Nicolas Bideau, a spokesman for the Swiss Foreign Ministry.
However, the Swiss authorities have made clear they won&rsquo;t be taking any initiative regarding hosting the event.
This comes after Trump announced Friday (Jan 10) that preparations were underway to set up a meeting between himself and Putin. The incoming US president added talking to Putin was necessary in order to end the conflict in Ukraine. The Kremlin also responded positively, saying Putin was also willing to meet Trump without any precondition.

"We need a mutual desire and political willingness to engage in a dialogue," Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin's spokesperson, said. "We see that Mr Trump also declares his readiness to solve issues via dialogue. We welcome that.&rdquo;
<h2>What is Burgenstock Forum?</h2>
The forum was established under Kyiv&rsquo;s initiative to bring major nations together to support an end to the war. The forum facilitated Switzerland-led peace talks, in which around 90 UN nations participated. However, around 70 nations that were invited by Ukraine didn&rsquo;t join the forum.

World | This comes after Trump announced Friday (Jan 10) that preparations were underway to set up a meeting between himself and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

However, the Swiss authorities have made clear they won’t be taking any initiative regarding hosting the event. In their communication with Trump&rsquo;s team, Denmark said that while Greenland would remain off the market, they were open to discussing any other requests from the US regarding the island, the sources told Axios.

President-elect Donald Trump's company is in negotiations to repurchase the lease on a hotel in Washington D.C. it used to own, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The Trump Organization had sold the lease on the hotel, which is blocks away from the White House in the historic Old Post Office Building, for $375 million in 2022. The hotel was leased to the Trumps in 2013 by the federal government, which owns the building.
Eric Trump, executive vice president at the company and Trump's son, discussed purchasing the lease with merchant bank BDT &amp; MSD Partners - which controls the long-term lease on the hotel, the report said.
Talks are still in the preliminary stages and may not lead to a sale of the property's lease, the report added. The hotel currently operates under a brand owned by Hilton Worldwide.
During Trump's first term, Democrats had criticized the lease as a conflict of interest, after which his son, Donald Trump Jr, took the reins at the hotel.
The Trump Organization, Hilton and BDT &amp; MSD Partners did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Giuliani attacked Howell following the hearing in Washington, calling her a &ldquo;mockery of a judge&rdquo; and saying she is &ldquo;dying to give me a prison sentence.&rdquo;

New York Judge Juan Merchan on Friday (Jan 10) sentenced US President-elect Donald Trump&nbsp; to unconditional discharge in the hush money case, meaning he will avoid jail time, fines or probation.
"This court has determined that the only lawful sentence that permits entry of a judgement of conviction without encroaching on the highest office of the land, is an unconditional discharge"," said New York judge Juan Merchan delivering the sentence during a court session that Trump attended virtually.
&ldquo;I wish you godspeed as you assume your second term in office," he said.
<h2 class="ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10">What does unconditional discharge mean?</h2>
Under New York state law, unconditional discharge means a sentence imposed &ldquo;without imprisonment, fine or probation supervision.&rdquo;
As per the law, such a sentence can be appropriate when the judge &ldquo;is of the opinion that no proper purpose would be served by imposing any condition upon the defendant&rsquo;s release.&rdquo;&nbsp;

In short, unconditional discharge is a way to wrap up the hush money case without giving jail time or any other sort of punishment to Trump that could interfere with his return to the White House.
New York prosecutor recommended that Trump should not be jailed for his criminal conviction. When asked if the defendant like to speak? Donald Trump said yes, marking the first time he is speaking during this trial.
<h2>Trump calls hush money trial 'very terrible experience'</h2>
Trump said "this has been a very terrible experience" and began to list his issues with the facts and charges involved.
&ldquo;This has been a very terrible experience. I think it has been a tremendous set back for New York and the New York court system,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;I get indicted for business records? Everybody should be so accurate. It&rsquo;s been a political witch hunt ... to damage my reputation so that I&rsquo;d lose the election, obviously that didn&rsquo;t work,&rdquo; Trump continued.
&ldquo;I was under a gag order, I&rsquo;m the first pesident in history [under] a gag order,&rdquo; Trump said. &ldquo;I assume that I&rsquo;m still under a gag order but the fact is I&rsquo;m totally innocent, I did nothing wrong,&rdquo; he added.
Trump joined the hearing virtually alongside his lawyer Todd Blanche. His other attorney Emil Bove was present in the courtroom.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, the one who brought the case against Trump that led to his conviction was also present during the sentencing.
Protestors gathered outside the courthouse holding banners both in support and against Trump.

World: In May last year, Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. These charges are connected to a $130,000 payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

New York Judge Juan Merchan on Friday (Jan 10) sentenced US President-elect Donald Trump to unconditional discharge in the hush money case, meaning he will avoid jail time, fines or probation. "This court has determined that the only lawful sentence that permits entry of a judgement of conviction without encroaching on the highest office of the land, is an unconditional discharge"," said New York judge Juan Merchan delivering the sentence during a court session that Trump attended virtually. “I wish you godspeed as you assume your second term in office," he said. What does unconditional discharge mean? Under New York state law, unconditional discharge means a sentence imposed “without imprisonment, fine or probation supervision.” As per the law, such a sentence can be appropriate when the judge “is of the opinion that no proper purpose would be served by imposing any condition upon the defendant’s release.” Also read: Who is Stormy Daniels, porn star linked to Donald Trump's hush money case? In short, unconditional discharge is a way to wrap up the hush money case without giving jail time or any other sort of punishment to Trump that could interfere with his return to the White House. New York prosecutor recommended that Trump should not be jailed for his criminal conviction. When asked if the defendant like to speak? Donald Trump said yes, marking the first time he is speaking during this trial. Trump calls hush money trial 'very terrible experience' Trump said "this has been a very terrible experience" and began to list his issues with the facts and charges involved. “This has been a very terrible experience. I think it has been a tremendous set back for New York and the New York court system,” he said. “I get indicted for business records? Everybody should be so accurate. It’s been a political witch hunt ... to damage my reputation so that I’d lose the election, obviously that didn’t work,” Trump continued. “I was under a gag order, I’m the first pesident in history [under] a gag order,” Trump said. “I assume that I’m still under a gag order but the fact is I’m totally innocent, I did nothing wrong,” he added. Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday (January 9), that a swift resolution to the Ukraine crisis seems unlikely, even with mediation efforts by US President-elect <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/thanks-but-no-thanks-eu-nations-strike-cautious-tone-over-trumps-greenland-plan-8602823">Donald Trump</a> during his second term.
"I really don&rsquo;t know what Trump will be able to do during his second term in office, but he surely will not let anyone get bored from the very start. The goal is clear: rapid success in resolving the Ukraine conflict looks unlikely, while the US economy continues at its own slow pace and even the fight against immigrants is not promising major victories," Medvedev wrote on Telegram.

Medvedev also commented on Trump&rsquo;s plans to "buy" Greenland and turn Canada into the 51st US state. Peskov suggested that the people of Greenland should be consulted about their preferences, referencing Russia's 2022 annexation of four Ukrainian regions through referendums. "We should show the same respect for the opinion of these people," he said.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Trump refused to rule out using military action to claim Greenland, after threatening high tariffs on Denmark if it declined to cede the autonomous territory. On the same day, Trump also proposed using military force to take control of the Panama Canal, which the US handed over to Panama during President Jimmy Carter&rsquo;s administration. Additionally, he said that he would use economic force against Canada.

Greenland may become independent if its residents want, but is unlikely to become a U.S. state, Denmark's foreign minister said on Wednesday after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump refused to rule out force to take control of the Arctic island.
Greenland's leader met with the Danish king in Copenhagen on Wednesday, a day after Trump's remarks thrust the fate of the mineral-rich and strategically important island, which is under Danish rule, to the top of world headlines.
Trump, who takes office on Jan. 20, said on Tuesday he would not rule out using military or economic action to make Greenland part of the United States. The same day, Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., made a private visit to Greenland.

Greenland, part of NATO through the membership of Denmark, has strategic significance for the U.S. military and for its ballistic missile early-warning system since the shortest route from Europe to North America runs via the Arctic island.
The president-elect has indicated he would pursue a more combative foreign policy that disregards traditional diplomatic formalities.
Greenland, the world's biggest island, has been part of Denmark for 600 years although its 57,000 people now govern their own domestic affairs. The island's government led by Prime Minister Mute Egede aims for eventual independence.

"We fully recognise that Greenland has its own ambitions. If they materialise, Greenland will become independent, though hardly with an ambition to become a federal state in the United States," Danish foreign minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said.
He told reporters the United States' heightened security concerns in the Arctic were legitimate following increased Russian and Chinese activity in the region.
"I don't think that we're in a foreign policy crisis," he said. "We are open to a dialogue with the Americans on how we can possibly cooperate even more closely than we do to ensure that the American ambitions are fulfilled."

Still, although Denmark itself played down the seriousness of Trump's threat to its territory, the returning president's openly stated ambition to expand U.S. borders has jolted European allies less than two weeks before he takes office.
France's foreign minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, said Europe would not let other nations attack its sovereign borders, although he did not believe the U.S. would invade.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed surprise at Trump's comments about Greenland and Canada, underlining that European partners unanimously uphold the inviolability of borders.
<h2>Strained relations</h2>
Greenland's relations with Denmark have lately been strained by allegations of mistreatment of Greenlanders. Egede has said the island is not for sale, while in his New Year speech he stepped up his push for independence. Denmark says the territory's fate can be decided only by Greenlanders.
Greenland's Finance Minister Erik Jensen repeated that Greenland is not for sale. "Our wish is to become independent one day. But our ambition is not to go from being governed by one country to another."
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Tuesday she could not imagine Trump's ambitions would lead to U.S. military intervention in Greenland. Denmark's military capabilities there are limited to four inspection vessels, a Challenger surveillance plane and dog sled patrols.
Responding to Trump's threat of tariffs against Denmark, which according to analysts at Danske Bank could potentially be "quite harmful to Danish companies, Frederiksen said she did not think a trade war with the United States was a good way forward.
Denmark is home to Novo Nordisk, Europe's most valuable company, which makes weight-loss drug Wegovy that has become hugely popular in the United States, the Nordic country's biggest trading partner.
The Danish royal palace gave no details of King Frederik's meeting with Greenland's Egede.
While many Greenlanders dream of independence from Denmark, the king remains popular on the island, having spent extended periods there, including a four-month expedition on the ice sheet. Last month, the royal court modified its coat of arms, enlarging a polar bear that symbolises Greenland.
"He's popular in Greenland. So he can clearly be helpful to the Danish-Greenlandic relationship," Damien Degeorges, a Reykjavik-based consultant specialising in Greenland, told Reuters.
Trump already raised the issue of the U.S. taking over Greenland during his first presidency, but his latest remarks still left many Danes baffled.
"I find it extremely ridiculous," said Jeppe Finne Sorenson, a data engineer in the Danish capital. "We have an alliance, we're allies. So this doesn't really respect that."

Strained relations Greenland's relations with Denmark have lately been strained by allegations of mistreatment of Greenlanders. But our ambition is not to go from being governed by one country to another." Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Tuesday she could not imagine Trump's ambitions would lead to U.S. military intervention in Greenland. So this doesn't really respect that." Addressing other claims made by Trump, Sheinbaum rejected his assertion that Mexico is "run by the cartels." She said, "In Mexico, the people are in charge," adding that the government is actively working to resolve the country&rsquo;s security challenges. Mexico President mocks Trump’s 'Gulf of America' proposal, suggests 'Mexican America' instead

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken Wednesday (Jan 8) rubbished President-elect Donald Trump&rsquo;s idea to take over Greenland, terming it &ldquo;not a good one&rdquo;. At a press conference in Paris held alongside French Foreign Minister Jean-No&euml;l Barrot, Blinken argued that the US should refrain from propagating narratives that may &ldquo;alienate&rdquo; American allies.
&ldquo;I think one of the basic propositions we brought to our work over the last four years is that we&rsquo;re stronger, we&rsquo;re more effective. We get better results when we&rsquo;re working closely with our allies, not saying or doing things that may alienate them,&rdquo; the top US diplomat said.
He added that the annexation of Greenland is &ldquo;obviously&rdquo; not going to happen.

&ldquo;Having said that, the idea expressed about Greenland is obviously not a good one, but maybe more important, it&rsquo;s obviously one that&rsquo;s not going to happen. So we probably shouldn&rsquo;t waste a lot of time talking about it,&rdquo; said Blinken.
<h2>House Democrats also reject Trump's Greenland push</h2>
Blinken&rsquo;s statement came after Democratic House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries declared that his party would not back Trump&rsquo;s expansionist agenda because Republican lawmakers were not elected to pursue such policies.
&ldquo;House Democrats believe that they are not sent to Washington to invade Greenland, rename the Gulf of Mexico or seize the Panama Canal by force. We were sent to Washington to lower the high cost of living in the United States of America,&rdquo; the Democratic leader said at a press conference.

Greenland is currently administered by Denmark. The Danish foreign minister, Lars L&oslash;kke Rasmussen, has already made clear his intention to discuss security issues with Trump, but he ruled out relinquishing control over the territory.
&ldquo;We are open to a dialogue with the Americans on how we can possibly cooperate even more closely than we do to ensure that the American ambitions are fulfilled,&rdquo; said Rasmussen.
&ldquo;I have my own issues with Donald Trump and I also know that you shouldn&rsquo;t say everything you think out loud,&rdquo; he added.

‘Not a good idea,’ Blinken rubbishes Trump’s Greenland bid

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday (Jan 8) said that billionaire Elon Musk was speaking as a private citizen and he has 'right to express his views'.
"Private citizens in our country can say what they want," Blinken, who is set to step down once Joe Biden leaves office on 20 January, told reporters in Paris.
"He, like any American, has the right to express his views," US top diplomat added.
Blinken&rsquo;s comments come amid growing criticism of Musk, particularly from European leaders, who allege that the owner of social media platform X is meddling in their political affairs. On Wednesday, France called on the European Commission to take a firm stance against what it sees as interference from Musk.

French Foreign Minister Jean-No&euml;l Barrot said, "Either the European Commission applies with the greatest firmness the laws that we have given ourselves to protect our public space, or it does not do so and then it will have to agree to give back the capacity to do so to the EU member states."
<h2>Accusations of election interference</h2>
French President Emmanuel Macron earlier this week, accused Musk of directly influencing elections, including Germany&rsquo;s upcoming snap polls in February. "Ten years ago, who could have imagined it if we had been told that the owner of one of the largest social networks in the world would support a new international reactionary movement and intervene directly in elections, including in Germany," Macron said in a speech to French ambassadors.

Other European leaders have voiced similar concerns. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr St&oslash;re said, "I find it worrying that a man with considerable access to social networks and significant economic resources is so directly involved in the internal affairs of other countries."
<h2>'Don&rsquo;t feed the troll'</h2>
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz dismissed Musk&rsquo;s statements, including insults directed at him, calling Musk a &ldquo;troll.&rdquo; Speaking on Sunday (5 January), Scholz said he had no interest in engaging with Musk. "I don&rsquo;t believe in courting Mr Musk&rsquo;s favour. I&rsquo;m happy to leave that to others. The rule is: don&rsquo;t feed the troll." He also urged voters not to let social media owners influence Germany&rsquo;s February elections.

<h2>Musk's support for right-wing opposition</h2>
Musk has been vocal in supporting right-wing opposition parties in nations like the UK and Germany.&nbsp; Musk has openly endorsed Germany&rsquo;s far-right Alternative f&uuml;r Deutschland (AfD) party ahead of the elections. He penned an opinion piece in a German newspaper supporting AfD and plans to host a live discussion with Alice Weidel, the party&rsquo;s chancellor candidate, on X.
