'One of the worst administrations in history': Trump to cease Biden's bureaucrats and fire them

Donald Trump, who was sworn in as the 47th US President on Monday (Jan 20), did not put his hand on the Bible while taking the oath of office during the inauguration.&nbsp;
First Lady Melania Trump was standing next to Trump, holding two Bibles, one given by his mother in 1955 and the other used by Abraham Lincoln for his inauguration in 1861.&nbsp;
Trump seemed to forget the important custom while taking the oath, not touching the Bibles.&nbsp;
He raised his right hand while taking the oath and followed Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.

Trump's mother gave this Bible in 1955 to Trump "to mark his Sunday Church Primary School graduation at First Presbyterian Church, in Jamaica, New York."
Meanwhile, the other was the Lincoln Bible, which was used during the oath ceremony of the 16th president in 1861.
&ldquo;It has only been used three times since, by President Obama at each of his inaugurations and by President Trump at his first inauguration in 2017,&rdquo; the Trump campaign stated.

Trump didn't place his hand on Bible while taking oath as US president. Is it necessary?

US President Donald Trump Monday (Jan 20) discontinued the use of Joe Biden-era CBP One app of the Customs and Border Protection, shortly after taking office. The app had been used to facilitate the legal entry of nearly 1 million people into the country, granting them work eligibility. As soon as the decision was taken, reports emerged claiming migrants waiting in Mexico for an appointment with CBP broke down in tears.

The migrants were spotted crying after they learnt their appointments were cancelled immediately, reported New York Post newspaper.
According to the NYP report, the app went offline at 12 pm EST Monday (10:30 pm IST). The move, announced by Customs and Border Protection, is part of the Trump administration&rsquo;s sweeping measures to reform the southern border and stop people from entering the US illegally.
<h2>Significance of the CBP One app</h2>
Using the app, approximately 1,450 migrants legally entered the country every day. The platform would allow the asylum seekers to seek appointments and request refuge in the US.

‘America is back': White House website revamped as Trump 2.0 begins

US President Donald Trump said in his inaugural address on Monday (Jan 20) that he will take &ldquo;back the Panama Canal&rdquo;, reiterating a promise that he has remained vocal about over the past months. The 47th US president further added that America can&rsquo;t let China get control of the crucial waterway.
"We didn't give it to China, we gave it to Panama. And we're taking it back," he declared at the Capitol Rotunda.

BREAKING: President Donald Trump declares the U.S. is "taking back" the Panama Canal from Chinese control <a href="https://t.co/lqrKSgXzSK">pic.twitter.com/lqrKSgXzSK</a>

Trump had earlier refused to rule out the use of military force against Panama. He claimed that American ships were being charged for passage through the canal.
&ldquo;American ships are being severely overcharged and not treated fairly in any way, shape or form, and that includes the United States Navy, and above all, China is operating the Panama Canal,&rdquo; the US president said.
However, Trump didn&rsquo;t provide any detail or timeline as to when his plan would be set in motion.
"The purpose of our deal and the spirit of our treaty have been totally violated," Trump declared during the address, referencing the 1977 Panama Canal Treaties, which transferred the canal's control to Panama in 1999.
<h2>Panama president reacts</h2>
Panama President Jos&eacute; Ra&uacute;l Mulino was quick to criticise Trump's statements, vowing to keep the canal under "Panamanian control with respect to its permanent neutrality."
"The Canal was not a concession from anyone. It was the result of generational struggles that culminated in 1999, as a result of the Torrijos-Carter treaty, and from then to date, for 25 years, uninterruptedly, we have managed and expanded it responsibly to serve the world and its trade, including the United States. We will exercise the right that protects us, the legal basis of the Treaty, the dignity that distinguishes us and the strength that International Law gives us as the ideal way to manage relations between countries and, above all, between allied and friendly countries, as demonstrated history and our actions regarding the United States," he added.
<h2>Significance of Panama Canal</h2>
The 51-mile-long canal was built by the US in the early 20th century, and handed over to Panama on December 31, 1999, under a treaty signed by then-President Jimmy Carter in 1977. The route is vital for American trade, with more than 70 per cent of the canal&rsquo;s traffic going to or coming from American ports. The route allows ships to ditch the longer and costlier trip around Cape Horn at the tip of South America.

Earlier, President Jos&eacute; Ra&uacute;l Mulino also declared that the canal would remain in Panamanian hands.

Guess the first viral trend that shook the internet just as Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the US: the awkward kiss moment between the 47th US President and the First Lady Melania Trump.
The scene, which unfolded moments before Trump took oath, is now making the rounds globally. Trump walked up to his wife upon entering the Capitol Rotunda and leaned towards her to show affection; however, the gesture in fact became an awkward moment of air-kiss.

Well, it was Melania&rsquo;s hat, stupid!
The oversized hat that the first lady wore to the event created a barrier (hopefully unintentional), causing the president to miss the mark by a few centimetres.
<h2>Reactions on social media</h2>
Social media didn&rsquo;t pull punches in roasting the newly-inaugurated president as soon as the scene went viral.
"I&rsquo;ve just realised why Melania is wearing that wide-brimmed hat - it made it impossible for Trump to land his attempted kiss....Smart woman...", wrote one user.
A second user noted: "Trump attempting to kiss Melania but the brim of her hat got in the way. That was strange".
The couple's relationship often attracts scrutiny from observers and ordinary users on social media.
In 2017, the couple caught the media's attention when, during a visit to Israel, Melania appeared to push the president's hand away after he tried to hold it at a red carpet event.

The ceremony will take place at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C and the oath will be administered by Chief Justice John Roberts, with the ceremony including traditional elements such as an inaugural address and a parade down Pennsylvania Avenue. The high-profile event will be closely watched by foreign representatives as well. But what has been India's representation? Here we explain that.
Trump oath taking Ceremony&nbsp;
India's External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar is representing the Prime Minister as his Special Envoy at the inaugural function of President Donald Trump in Washington DC. He is carrying a letter from the Prime Minister for President Trump. EAM Dr S Jaishankar is present at the "invitation of the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee", India's ministry of external affairs made an announcement on 12th January. Important to point out, foreign ministers of all Quad countries, India's external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar, Australia's FM Penny Wong and Japan FM Iwaya are present, and likely to hold a Quad FM's meet with incoming US Secretary of state Marco Rubio. Past Practice
Typically, India does not send its Prime Minister or President to the swearing-in ceremonies of other countries' leaders. India's general practice has been to send Special Envoys of the Prime Minister to attend the swearing in ceremony of Heads of State and Government. This practice is based on an unspoken policy to maintain a certain level of diplomatic protocol.
History of Indian representation
Indian ministers have represented Indian government at the oath taking ceremonies. A history of such representation:
May 2023: Indian Defence Minsiter Rajnath Singh attended the swearing in ceremony of Nigeria President
November 2023: Minister of Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju attended the swearing in ceremony of Maldives President
July 2024: Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari attended the swearing in ceremony of Iran President
October 2024: MoS for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita attended the swearing in ceremony of Indonesian President, Mexico President.

June 2022: MoS for External Affairs &nbsp;Raj Kumar Ranjan Singh attended the swearing in ceremony of Philippines President.
August 2021: EAM Dr S Jaishankar attended the swearing in ceremony of Iran President Ebrahim Raisi.
Only Exception
The only exception to this rule was when PM Modi attended the swearing in ceremony of Maldives President Solih in November 2018. The 2018 visit was the first visit of PM Modi to Maldives and was seen as a significant in the context of India's neighbourhood first policy. After the swearing in ceremony, PM held bilateral talks with the Maldives President &nbsp;Solih during which he conveyed India&rsquo;s desire to work closely for the realization of Maldives&rsquo; developmental priorities, esp in areas of infrastructure, health care, connectivity.

Due to the expected cold weather, the swearing-in will take place indoors, inside the Capitol Rotunda. This is the first time the ceremony has been held indoors since 1985, when Ronald Reagan&rsquo;s second-term inauguration was moved for similar reasons.
"I have ordered the Inauguration Address, in addition to prayers and other speeches, to be delivered in the United States Capitol Rotunda, as was used by Ronald Reagan in 1985, also because of very cold weather," Trump shared in a post on Friday.
<h2>How to watch the Trump inauguration ceremony?</h2>
The event will be broadcast live across major news networks in the United States. Additionally, live streams will be available on YouTube through official channels.

India&rsquo;s external affairs minister, S Jaishankar, is also confirmed to attend, along with China&rsquo;s vice president and the foreign affairs ministers of Japan and Australia.

In a new interview with Geto Boys&rsquo; Willie D, Nelly, the rapper said, ''I didn&rsquo;t know that I had to agree with your political choices. If you follow what I do, this shouldn&rsquo;t even be an argument. He is the president. He won.''

He continued: ''I&rsquo;m not doing this for money. I&rsquo;m doing this because it&rsquo;s an honour. I respect the office. It don't matter who is in office. The same way our brothers and sisters go to war to put their lives on the line for whoever is in office. So, if they can put their life on the line for whoever is in office, I can damn sure perform for whoever is in office.''
"This isn't politics. The politics, for me, it's over. He won. He's the president. He's the commander-in-chief of what I would like to say is the best country in the world."
The artist continued: "It is an honour for me to perform for the president of the United States, regardless of who is in office."
"If President Biden would have asked me to perform, I would have performed. If Vice President Kamala Harris would have won and asked me to perform, I would have performed."
On the backlash, the three-time Grammy-winner said, "I've been getting backlash my whole career. That don't bother me."

Nelly defends his performance at Trump's inauguration after backlash: 'This isn't politics'

Donald Trump, the leader of the Republican Party, is set to become the 47th President of the United States on Monday (20 Jan). The inauguration ceremony will be held inside the rotunda of the US Capitol building at 12:00 pm ET (5:00 pm GMT).
Here are five key things to know about Trump&rsquo;s political journey:
<h2>1. Unexpected political start</h2>
In July 2015, businessman Donald Trump, with no political experience, surprised everyone by announcing his presidential run. Despite doubts, he won the Republican nomination in 2016. In the election, he defeated Hillary Clinton, which shocked the nation and marked the rise of populism in US politics.
<h2>2. Bold actions and controversies</h2>
When Trump became president on January 20, 2017, he quickly took bold steps. He reinstated the Mexico City Policy, pulled the US out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and introduced travel bans on several Muslim-majority countries. These actions, part of his "America First" policy, were controversial but earned him strong support from many Americans who felt ignored by the political system.

<h2>&nbsp;3. Legal issues and impeachment</h2>
Trump faced growing legal and political challenges during his presidency. In 2018, he started a trade war with China. He was also investigated for his campaign&rsquo;s possible connections with Russia. In 2019, the House of Representatives impeached him for his actions related to Ukraine, but the Senate later acquitted him.
<h2>4. COVID-19 and the 2020 election</h2>
The COVID-19 pandemic became a major issue during Trump&rsquo;s final year in office. His response to the crisis was widely criticised. In the 2020 election, Trump lost to Joe Biden but continued to claim the election was &ldquo;stolen,&rdquo; despite no evidence. He launched several unsuccessful legal battles over the results.

<h2>&nbsp;5. Capitol riot and ongoing influence</h2>
Trump&rsquo;s presidency ended with the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, where his supporters tried to stop the election results from being certified. Afterwards, the House impeached Trump for a second time, charging him with "inciting insurrection," but the Senate did not convict him. Trump skipped Biden&rsquo;s inauguration, breaking tradition. Bitcoin hits record high of $109,000 ahead of Trump's inauguration ceremony

<div>New Delhi:&nbsp;On Monday (Jan 20), Donald Trump takes over as the US president for the second time, something that can change geopolitics radically. Trump was earlier the US president in 2017-2020, during which he took several decisions that changed international relations. These include withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement and Iran nuclear deal, meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the Abraham Accords in West Asia. Let us understand how India-US ties fared during Trump's first term.</div>
<h2> 2016:</h2>
<div></div>
<div>During the US elections, Trump famously said, "I am a big fan of Hindus, big fan of India, big big fan". The speech of course went viral several times since then. His Republican Party has been trying to woo Indian-American voters, and during 2024 US elections, most Indian-Americans, one of the richest communities in the US, voted for him.&nbsp;</div>
<div></div>
<div>The formation of the Republican Hindu and Indian American Coalition by the Republican National Committee (RNC) reflects an attempt to court Indian-American Hindu voters. India-born Shalabh Kumar was a prominent backer of Trump. Post Trump's 2016 election victory, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first world leaders to have a conversation with him, and congratulated him on 9th November 2016.</div>
<div></div>

<h2>2017:</h2>
<div></div>
<div>2017 was the year when both PM Modi and Donald Trump engaged several times. Modi paid an official visit to the US on 26-27 July that year, which saw significant outcomes. Their joint statement called out Pakistan for its support of terrorism. The US extended support for India's membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group or NSG , Wassenaar Arrangement, Australia Group and permenant seat at the UN Security Council. During the visit, Trump called for "fair, reciprocal" trade and asked India to remove trade barriers. Both leaders again met in August on the sidelines of the G20 Hamburg summit, and then again in Manila, on the sidelines of Asean summit meetings in November. In 2017, India got first shipments of US crude oil as well, something that Trump welcomed. A US readout of PM Modi and President Trump at the Manila meeting said, "Trump expressed appreciation that Indian purchases of oil from the US have surpassed 10 million barrels in recent months". Importantly, Quad was revived after a gap of 10 years when Indian, American, Australian and Japanese leaders met on the sidelines of Asean summit in Manila.</div>
<div></div>
<h2>2018:</h2>
<div></div>
<div>The year started with Trump slamming Pakistan. In a tweet on 1st January 2018, Trump said, "The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies &amp; deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools. They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!".&nbsp; Both India and the US firmed up ties with the signing of the COMCASA pact at the 2+2 foreign and defence ministers meeting in Delhi. COMCASA or &nbsp;Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement allows for the transfer of secure communication equipment from the US to India, facilitating real-time operational information exchange. India also got Strategic Trade Authorisation-1 or STA-1 status, which allows for easier export controls for high-technology product sales, particularly in defense and dual-use technologies. PM Modi, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe and US President Trump met as part of "JAI" Group on the sidelines of the G20 Argentina summit. That year, India and Russia signed a $5.43 billionn S-400 missile defence system deal, and while the threat of US CAATSA law was present, it was never applied on Delhi, which shows ties remained in positive trajectory. CAATSA stands for the US law, Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act.&nbsp;</div>
<div></div>
<h2>2019:</h2>
<div></div>
<div>This was the year of more positive developments, but new irritants come up in the relationship. PM Modi visited the US in September and met with Trump on the sidelines of UN General Assembly. But the showstopper was the "Howdy Modi" mega diaspora event. The event saw a significant gathering of Indian-Americans, but for the first time, the sitting US president addressed the diaspora alongside PM Modi. It was seen as a celebration of ties, and the diaspora which was described as the "living bridge". Many people at the event chanted "Abki Baar Trump Sarkar", which translates to 'this time, Trump government', a play on the Hindi slogan given by PM Modi for his election campaigns. Both leaders had earlier met on the sidelines of the G7 Biarritz summit in August, and then on the sidelines of G20 Osaka summit in June, both bilaterally and under the JAI grouping format.&nbsp;</div>
<div></div>
<div>But irritants came in the form of Trump's 'Kashmir mediation' proposal and the US terminating India's GSP status in June 2019 due to market access issues, a withdrawal that meant higher tariffs for Indian goods in the US and Washington's Iran Sanctions regime. GSP or Generalized System of Preferences is a trade agreement that allows developing countries to export certain products to developed countries with low or zero customs duties.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
</div>
<div>The year 2019 saw the Pulwama attack by Pakistani terrorists, and India removing special status for the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Trump publicly offered to mediate between India and Pakistan. Sitting alongside Imran Khan, the then Pakistani prime minister, Trump said, "I would love to be a mediator".</div>
<div></div>
<div>Delhi was quick to reject any proposal, because for India, the Shimla pact is the last word for any India-Pakistan issue. On the sidelines of G7 summit in France, it was made clear that Trump's mediation is not required, to which he pointed, "they (India and Pakistan) can do it themselves"</div>
<div></div>
<div>On Iran, a special waiver given to India lapsed in May 2019, and Delhi had to cut its oil imports from the country. A year earlier, Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, had publicly given warnings on India importing oil from Iran. India, of couse got a waiver on Chabahar port development. The year saw the conclusion of Industrial Security Annex to India-US General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA), finalisation of Defense Technology &amp; Trade Initiative SOP, US' appointment of liaison officer to Indian Ocean Fusion Center, and the US agreeing to join CDRI or the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.</div>
<div></div>
<h2>2020:</h2>
<div></div>
<div>This year, Trump visited India and got a grand welcome with the&nbsp; "Namaste Trump". The event in Ahmedabad, on the lines of "Howdy Modi", saw crowds gathering to welcome the US president. Trump made a rousing speech on India-US ties, but also made a few mispronunciations that started a meme fest on social media.</div>
<div></div>
<div>India and US elevated ties to "comprehensive global strategic partnership", and Delhi decided to procure MH-60R naval and AH-64E Apache helicopters. Both sides called out Pakistan for its support of terrorism. The US president and the First Lady Melania Trump also visited the Taj Mahal in Agra.&nbsp;</div>
<div></div>
<div>In October that year, India and the US signed the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA), the last of the four foundational agreements on defence cooperation.</div>
<div></div>
<div>BECA helps in sharing advanced satellite and sensor data and its signing coincided with India-China border tensions.</div>
<div></div>
<div>2020 was also the year when the Covid pandemic started, and the US reached out to India, the "pharmacy of the world". The US needed Hydroxychloroquine and Trump called PM Modi. India decided to supply HCQ to the US in April 2020, following the talks, despite India's ban on its exports.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Trump also proposed to mediate between India and China in the aftermath of the Galwan incident as border tensions increased. Both Delhi and Beijing rejected his proposal. On Afghanistan, the US continued to engage India, as its special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, appointed by Trump, visited Delhi several times. India was invited to attend the US-Taliban peace agreement that was officially signed on February 29, 2020, in Doha, Qatar and eventually paved the way for US withdrawal from Afghanistan under the Biden administration, though chaotic.</div>
<div></div>
<h2>Looking forward</h2>
<div></div>
<div>Trump 2.0 is expected to bring a lot of changes in the world. His team has Marco Rubio, proposed as the US Secretary of state, and Mike Waltz, named as National Security Advisor, both of whom have worked on India and with India.&nbsp;</div>
<div></div>
<div>Mike Waltz, a Republican representative from Florida, co-chaired the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans. In an interview to WION in 2023 when he was in India to attend India's Independence day celebration, he said, "I think the trajectory is only getting higher and only going stronger and it's across so many spheres. It's in pharmaceuticals, biotech, space, maritime shipping, energy, renewable energy and liquid natural gas and of course, military and defense. So there's so many industries that the relationships coming together".</div>
<div></div>
<div>Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar met him in December 2024, one of the first set of engagements between the Indian government and the incoming Trump administration.&nbsp;</div>
<div></div>
<div>Marco Rubio, a US Senator from Florida and a China hawk, has been a strong India supporter. In July 2024, he introduced the "US-India Defense Cooperation Act" in the US Congress, aiming to elevate India's status to that of key US allies like Japan, Israel, South Korea, and NATO members in terms of technology transfers and military cooperation. After the 2020 Galwan aggression by China, Rubio had publicly expressed his "solidarity with the people of India as they firmly confront unwarranted and lawless armed aggression by the communist party of China".&nbsp;</div>

<div>Immigration and trade can be an issue under Trump 2.0. During the recent "MAGA Civil war" over the issue of H1B visa progamme, Trump supported having more skilled workers in the US, but trade can be a thorny point. During the election campaign, Trump termed India as "Tariff King".</div>
<div> The incoming US president is expected to travel to India later this year for the Quad summit. This will be also for the first time that a sitting US president will travel to India in the first year of his presidency, unlike in the past when US presidents travelled to India late into their terms.</div>

These include withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement and Iran nuclear deal, meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the Abraham Accords in West Asia. Let us understand how India-US ties fared during Trump's first term. 2016: During the US elections, Trump famously said, "I am a big fan of Hindus, big fan of India, big big fan". The speech of course went viral several times since then. His Republican Party has been trying to woo Indian-American voters, and during 2024 US elections, most Indian-Americans, one of the richest communities in the US, voted for him. The formation of the Republican Hindu and Indian American Coalition by the Republican National Committee (RNC) reflects an attempt to court Indian-American Hindu voters. India-born Shalabh Kumar was a prominent backer of Trump. Post Trump's 2016 election victory, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first world leaders to have a conversation with him, and congratulated him on 9th November 2016. Also read: Trump vows to end 'American decline', says 'will prevent World War 3' at inauguration eve rally 2017: 2017 was the year when both PM Modi and Donald Trump engaged several times. Importantly, Quad was revived after a gap of 10 years when Indian, American, Australian and Japanese leaders met on the sidelines of Asean summit in Manila. 2018: The year started with Trump slamming Pakistan. In a tweet on 1st January 2018, Trump said, "The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools. They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!". Both India and the US firmed up ties with the signing of the COMCASA pact at the 2+2 foreign and defence ministers meeting in Delhi. COMCASA or Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement allows for the transfer of secure communication equipment from the US to India, facilitating real-time operational information exchange. CAATSA stands for the US law, Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act. 2019: This was the year of more positive developments, but new irritants come up in the relationship. Both leaders had earlier met on the sidelines of the G7 Biarritz summit in August, and then on the sidelines of G20 Osaka summit in June, both bilaterally and under the JAI grouping format. But irritants came in the form of Trump's 'Kashmir mediation' proposal and the US terminating India's GSP status in June 2019 due to market access issues, a withdrawal that meant higher tariffs for Indian goods in the US and Washington's Iran Sanctions regime. GSP or Generalized System of Preferences is a trade agreement that allows developing countries to export certain products to developed countries with low or zero customs duties. The year 2019 saw the Pulwama attack by Pakistani terrorists, and India removing special status for the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Trump publicly offered to mediate between India and Pakistan. Sitting alongside Imran Khan, the then Pakistani prime minister, Trump said, "I would love to be a mediator". Delhi was quick to reject any proposal, because for India, the Shimla pact is the last word for any India-Pakistan issue. On the sidelines of G7 summit in France, it was made clear that Trump's mediation is not required, to which he pointed, "they (India and Pakistan) can do it themselves" On Iran, a special waiver given to India lapsed in May 2019, and Delhi had to cut its oil imports from the country. A year earlier, Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, had publicly given warnings on India importing oil from Iran. India, of couse got a waiver on Chabahar port development. The year saw the conclusion of Industrial Security Annex to India-US General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA), finalisation of Defense Technology & Trade Initiative SOP, US' appointment of liaison officer to Indian Ocean Fusion Center, and the US agreeing to join CDRI or the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. 2020: This year, Trump visited India and got a grand welcome with the "Namaste Trump". The event in Ahmedabad, on the lines of "Howdy Modi", saw crowds gathering to welcome the US president. Trump made a rousing speech on India-US ties, but also made a few mispronunciations that started a meme fest on social media. India and US elevated ties to "comprehensive global strategic partnership", and Delhi decided to procure MH-60R naval and AH-64E Apache helicopters. Both sides called out Pakistan for its support of terrorism. The US president and the First Lady Melania Trump also visited the Taj Mahal in Agra. In October that year, India and the US signed the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA), the last of the four foundational agreements on defence cooperation. BECA helps in sharing advanced satellite and sensor data and its signing coincided with India-China border tensions. 2020 was also the year when the Covid pandemic started, and the US reached out to India, the "pharmacy of the world". The US needed Hydroxychloroquine and Trump called PM Modi. India decided to supply HCQ to the US in April 2020, following the talks, despite India's ban on its exports. Trump also proposed to mediate between India and China in the aftermath of the Galwan incident as border tensions increased. Both Delhi and Beijing rejected his proposal. On Afghanistan, the US continued to engage India, as its special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, appointed by Trump, visited Delhi several times. India was invited to attend the US-Taliban peace agreement that was officially signed on February 29, 2020, in Doha, Qatar and eventually paved the way for US withdrawal from Afghanistan under the Biden administration, though chaotic. Looking forward Trump 2.0 is expected to bring a lot of changes in the world. His team has Marco Rubio, proposed as the US Secretary of state, and Mike Waltz, named as National Security Advisor, both of whom have worked on India and with India. Mike Waltz, a Republican representative from Florida, co-chaired the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans. So there's so many industries that the relationships coming together". Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar met him in December 2024, one of the first set of engagements between the Indian government and the incoming Trump administration. Marco Rubio, a US Senator from Florida and a China hawk, has been a strong India supporter. In July 2024, he introduced the "US-India Defense Cooperation Act" in the US Congress, aiming to elevate India's status to that of key US allies like Japan, Israel, South Korea, and NATO members in terms of technology transfers and military cooperation. After the 2020 Galwan aggression by China, Rubio had publicly expressed his "solidarity with the people of India as they firmly confront unwarranted and lawless armed aggression by the communist party of China". During the recent "MAGA Civil war" over the issue of H1B visa progamme, Trump supported having more skilled workers in the US, but trade can be a thorny point. During the election campaign, Trump termed India as "Tariff King". The incoming US president is expected to travel to India later this year for the Quad summit. This will be also for the first time that a sitting US president will travel to India in the first year of his presidency, unlike in the past when US presidents travelled to India late into their terms.

Trump inauguration: Crypto firms pump $10 million to welcome new US president

As Donald Trump's inauguration nears, Washington DC residents are&nbsp; fleeing the city, trying to stay away from the event, saying that they do not want to be around that "sort of hostile negative energy".
US President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration is scheduled to be held on Monday (Jan 20) as he takes over the Oval Office.
Alejandra Whitney-Smith, a resident of DC, whose birthday weekend is coinciding with Trump's inauguration, said that she is planning to spend a week in a cabin without technology, the Guardian reported.&nbsp;

"It (inauguration weekend) coincides with my birthday weekend, which I usually do spend in DC, but when the election happened, I told myself, &lsquo;Oh, no, I can&rsquo;t be here,&rsquo;&rdquo; said Whitney-Smith.
<h2>'Ugly side of America'</h2>
While commenting on Trump's re-election, she said, "It represents the ugly side of America that people don&rsquo;t want to acknowledge.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Smith's mother was working at the Library of Congress during the January 6 attack on the US Capitol in 2021. While recalling the incident, Smith said, "I just remember that feeling of fear for her and then also just concern for me being in the city. I just knew for me &ndash; I didn&rsquo;t want to be around that sort of hostile negative energy.&rdquo;
She further said that she would hunker down in a cabin with four friends during the inauguration weekend and do some vision boarding, reflection, and reconnection.&nbsp;

&ldquo;I guess I maybe mistakenly had a lot of faith that people saw what happened during the first administration, and I figured we as a country wouldn&rsquo;t regress,&rdquo; said Whitney-Smith, who works as an attorney.&nbsp;
<h2>'Cult-like following'</h2>
Noting that she wanted Democratic candidate Kamala Harris to win the elections, Smith said, "But I also know the reality of living in this country as a Black woman. As much as I wanted Harris to win, there was something in me that still told me that America was not ready for their first Black woman president. Not only that, she was running against Donald Trump who has an almost cult-like following that is so powerful.&rdquo;
Another resident of Washington, DC, Tia Butler, emailed her relatives the day after the election, asking them who was interested in "going on a cruise or some other adventure, January 19-25".&nbsp;

The memories of the January 6 riots make her not want to be in the city during Trump's inauguration.&nbsp;
Earlier, Butler was expecting some guests in January as she was hoping for a different outcome, however, now she will spend the Dr Martin Luther King Jr holiday weekend in California.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I have a fundamental set of beliefs and values that differ greatly from the supporters of the president-elect, so it is best that I just remove myself,&rdquo; said Butler, a human resources executive who had worked for the federal government for nearly two decades before leaving to work at a non-profit.&nbsp;
&ldquo;It says to me that we&rsquo;d rather have a criminal leading our country than a person of colour, or a criminal rather than a woman," she added.&nbsp;
During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump has branded Washington as a "filthy and crime-ridden embarrassment to our nation".&nbsp;

As Donald Trump's inauguration nears, Washington DC residents are fleeing the city, trying to stay away from the event, saying that they do not want to be around that "sort of hostile negative energy". US President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration is scheduled to be held on Monday (Jan 20) as he takes over the Oval Office. Alejandra Whitney-Smith, a resident of DC, whose birthday weekend is coinciding with Trump's inauguration, said that she is planning to spend a week in a cabin without technology, the Guardian reported. 'Ugly side of America' While commenting on Trump's re-election, she said, "It represents the ugly side of America that people don’t want to acknowledge.” Smith's mother was working at the Library of Congress during the January 6 attack on the US Capitol in 2021. While recalling the incident, Smith said, "I just remember that feeling of fear for her and then also just concern for me being in the city. I just knew for me – I didn’t want to be around that sort of hostile negative energy.” She further said that she would hunker down in a cabin with four friends during the inauguration weekend and do some vision boarding, reflection, and reconnection. Also read: Trump inauguration protest: What to know about People's March in DC? “I guess I maybe mistakenly had a lot of faith that people saw what happened during the first administration, and I figured we as a country wouldn’t regress,” said Whitney-Smith, who works as an attorney. 'Cult-like following' Noting that she wanted Democratic candidate Kamala Harris to win the elections, Smith said, "But I also know the reality of living in this country as a Black woman. As much as I wanted Harris to win, there was something in me that still told me that America was not ready for their first Black woman president. Not only that, she was running against Donald Trump who has an almost cult-like following that is so powerful.” Another resident of Washington, DC, Tia Butler, emailed her relatives the day after the election, asking them who was interested in "going on a cruise or some other adventure, January 19-25". Also read: Trump holds phone talks with 'chairman Xi' over TikTok as potential ban looms The memories of the January 6 riots make her not want to be in the city during Trump's inauguration. Earlier, Butler was expecting some guests in January as she was hoping for a different outcome, however, now she will spend the Dr Martin Luther King Jr holiday weekend in California. “I have a fundamental set of beliefs and values that differ greatly from the supporters of the president-elect, so it is best that I just remove myself,” said Butler, a human resources executive who had worked for the federal government for nearly two decades before leaving to work at a non-profit. “It says to me that we’d rather have a criminal leading our country than a person of colour, or a criminal rather than a woman," she added. During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump has branded Washington as a "filthy and crime-ridden embarrassment to our nation". US President-elect Donald Trump is planning massive immigration raid in Chicago on day two of his administration, reported the Wall Street Journal Friday (Jan 17).
The paper reported, citing four officials involved in the planning, that raids may continue for a week, starting Tuesday. The report added that around 200 officers of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will be deployed to carry out the operation.
Later, news agency Reuters quoted a Trump official as saying that similar enforcement measures will be taken across the country and there will be no special focus on the Chicago city.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re going to be doing operations all across the country,&rdquo; the person said. &ldquo;You&rsquo;re going to see arrests in New York. You&rsquo;re going to see arrests in Miami.&rdquo;
This comes after Tom Homan, Trump&rsquo;s incoming border czar, said in an event in Chicago that the administration&rsquo;s anti-immigration efforts were "going to start right here in Chicago, Illinois."
"And if the Chicago mayor doesn&rsquo;t want to help, he can step aside. But if he impedes us, if he knowingly harbors or conceals an illegal alien, I will prosecute him," he was quoted as saying by the WSJ.

<h2>Why Chicago?</h2>
According to insiders, Chicago has been chosen to start the operation owing to its large immigration population. Of the city&rsquo;s 2.6 million residents, about 20 per cent are foreign-born. Last year, the Republican state of Texas bused over 50,000 migrants to the city to protest border policies of outgoing President Joe Biden.

The issue of immigration was at the centre of Trump&rsquo;s presidential campaign. Trump in January last year promised that he will undertake &ldquo;largest domestic deportation operation in American history" within moments of his inauguration.
The incoming US leader is expected to rally all US agencies behind him as he plans to deport record number of immigrants.

'Coldest day in 40 years': Donald Trump's inauguration moved indoors

The United States Supreme Court on Friday (Jan 17) upheld a law that will ban <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/tiktok" rel="dofollow">TikTok</a>, rejecting a last-ditch appeal from the social media app owners, who said that the ban violated the First Amendment.&nbsp;
The court ruled that the law does not violate free speech rights, adding that the US government had shown legitimate national security concerns about the app.&nbsp;
The law will now force TikTok&rsquo;s Chinese owner to sell its US business by Sunday, or face a ban.
<h2>Decision in Trump's hands</h2>
Following the court's statement, US President-elect Donald Trump told CNN that he will decide what to do with TikTok once he takes office, which is scheduled for Monday.&nbsp;

"It ultimately goes up to me, so you&rsquo;re going to see what I&rsquo;m going to do,&rdquo; Trump said in an interview with CNN.&nbsp;
When asked if he would try to reverse the ban, should it go into effect, Trump said, &ldquo;Congress has given me the decision, so I&rsquo;ll be making the decision.&rdquo;

The White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Friday said that the actions to implement the law are left to Donald Trump, whose inauguration will be held on Monday.&nbsp;
"President Biden&rsquo;s position on TikTok has been clear for months, including since Congress sent a bill in an overwhelming, bipartisan fashion to the President&rsquo;s desk: TikTok should remain available to Americans, but simply under American ownership or other ownership that addresses the national security concerns identified by Congress in developing this law," she said.&nbsp;

As America looks forward to Donald Trump's inauguration day, thousands of people are expected to rally on Saturday (Jan 18) in Washington and other cities across the country as part of the People's March, to protest against the GOP's policies, which according to them will undermine the women's rights, immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community, and racial and religious minorities.
Around 50,000 people will gather to attend the event in DC, which will be happening just two days before Trump's inauguration.&nbsp;
<h2>Key issues to be addressed</h2>
