Donald Trump&rsquo;s order halting diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives has led the US Air Force to suspend course instruction on a documentary about the first Black airmen in the US military, known as the Tuskegee Airmen, a US official said on Saturday (Jan 25).
The Tuskegee Airmen, a group of 450 Black pilots, made history by fighting in segregated units overseas during World War II. Their impressive combat record played a significant role in shaping President Harry Truman's decision to desegregate the US armed forces in 1948.
Another video about civilian female pilots trained by the US military during the Second World War, known as Women Airforce Service Pilots, or Wasps, was also pulled, the official added.
The Air Force, however, did not directly comment on the decision, which was confirmed by an official who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

<h2 dir="ltr">Trump ordered dismantling of DEI programmes</h2>
US President Donald Trump has issued a series of executive orders, including seeking to dismantle DEI programmes since he took office on Monday.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programmes aim to create opportunities for underrepresented groups, including women and ethnic minorities. Supporters, largely Democrats and civil rights advocates argue these initiatives address historical inequities and systemic racism.&nbsp;
However, conservatives contend that DEI programmes are discriminatory, prioritizing group identity over merit, and have become a focal point of opposition.
Reuters reported on Friday (Jan 24) that Pete Hegseth, the new defence secretary, has told lawmakers he opposes the use of race as a factor when evaluating candidates for elite US military academies.

Trump&rsquo;s administration and its backers in Congress argue that the US military also needs to be purged of generals who support DEI initiatives, which they say are a distraction from warfighting.
The US official revealed that a video about the Tuskegee Airmen and other historical materials have been temporarily removed from the curriculum as the Air Force undergoes a review of its training programme at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, a facility that provides basic training to new recruits.
The official stressed that the videos had not been targeted but were part of the curriculum that had been suspended pending review.

Trump’s anti-DEI order grounds documentary on Tuskegee Airmen and female WWII pilots

For years, the CIA maintained that it lacked sufficient evidence to determine whether <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/covid-19" target="_blank" rel="noopener">COVID-19</a> originated from a wet market in Wuhan, China, or was an accidental lab leak. However, the agency has now adjusted its stance, suggesting that a lab-related incident is "more likely" than natural transmission through animals.
The updated assessment follows the confirmation of John Ratcliffe as CIA director during Donald Trump&rsquo;s second White House administration. In a statement released on Saturday, a CIA spokesperson explained, "CIA assesses with low confidence that a research-related origin of the COVID-19 pandemic is more likely than a natural origin based on the available body of reporting."

Despite the shift, it stated that both scenarios remain plausible. Officials said that the revised assessment does not stem from any new intelligence but is instead based on the same evidence previously analysed.
<h2>Lab leak hypothesis gains momentum</h2>
John Ratcliffe, the new CIA chief, has been a long-time supporter of the lab leak theory. Following his appointment, Ratcliffe said that understanding the origins of COVID-19 would be a priority.
Speaking to Breitbart News on Friday, he said, &ldquo;I think our intelligence, our science and our common sense all really dictate that the origins of Covid was a leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.&rdquo; He also stated that the CIA could no longer remain &ldquo;on the sidelines&rdquo; of this debate.
The CIA&rsquo;s &ldquo;low confidence&rdquo; assessment means that the intelligence behind it is fragmentary and incomplete. This conclusion aligns with the positions of other agencies. Five organisations, including the National Intelligence Council and the Defence Intelligence Agency, have leaned towards natural exposure as the cause of the outbreak, though they too maintain &ldquo;low confidence&rdquo; in their evaluations.

Meanwhile, two other agencies &ndash; the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/nothing-heroic-about-it-jfks-grandson-slams-trumps-decision-to-declassify-assassination-records-8650450">FBI</a> and the Department of Energy &ndash; have supported the lab leak hypothesis. However, their conclusions differ, with the FBI tracing it back to the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the Energy Department pointing to the Wuhan Center for Disease Control.
<h2>Political implications</h2>
The origins of COVID-19 carry significant geopolitical ramifications. Ratcliffe said in a 2023 essay for Fox News, co-authored with Cliff Sims, that recognising the virus as emerging from a lab under China&rsquo;s Communist Party would present major diplomatic challenges for the Biden administration.
During his first presidency, Donald Trump also took a strong stance on the issue. &ldquo;We must hold accountable the nation which unleashed this plague onto the world, China,&rdquo; he said, criticising both the Chinese government and the World Health Organization (WHO) for their handling of the outbreak. Trump accused the WHO of being under China&rsquo;s influence and spreading misinformation about the virus.

United States (US) President Donald Trump's border czar Tom Homan delivered a message to Pope Francis by saying that the sovereign of the Vatican City State should focus on fixing the Catholic Church.
In an interview with American news network Newsmax, Homan on Friday (January 24) reacted to the remarks that Pope Francis made this week. Francis had called the mass deportations being carried out by the Trump administration a "disgrace."

"If this is true, it is a disgrace, because it makes the poor unfortunate who have nothing pay the price of imbalance. This is not how things are solved," Pope said during an interview earlier this week.
<h2>Homan counters Pope</h2>
Speaking to Newsmax, Homan said on Friday, "Well, let me give a message to the pope: I'm a lifelong Catholic. I was born Catholic. I've been through Catholic doctrine."
"Look, you only concentrate on fixing the Catholic Church, first of all. He's (Trump) got big problems there," he added.

Trump's border czar also highlighted that there is a wall in the Vatican and that entering the European country illegally is a serious crime.&nbsp;
"So he can protect the Vatican where he lives; he can build a wall where he lives, where American people are not allowed that? No," Homan further told the network.
<h2>A show of force on illegal immigration</h2>
Less than a week after becoming the American president, Donald Trump touted deportation efforts and published new rules Friday making it easier to remove people.
Amid officials&rsquo; latest show of force, waves of worry reverberated in parts of the US, with officials in Newark, New Jersey, lashing out over what they called illegal arrests by immigration agents, a report by the news agency Associated Press early Saturday said.

US President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to sign an executive order to overhaul or get rid of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as he was addressing a briefing on <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/north-carolina" rel="dofollow">North Carolina</a>'s hurricane recovery.&nbsp;
Claiming the agency got in the way of disaster response, Trump suggested that states take the lead role in responding and then get reimbursed a percentage of their costs from the federal government.&nbsp;

<h2>What is FEMA?</h2>
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is a US government agency with a mission to help people before, during, and after natural disasters, including hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and floods.
It was created in 1979 through an executive order by Former President Jimmy Carter.
The agency, headquartered in Washington DC, coordinates the federal response to disasters.&nbsp;

It employs over 20,000 people across the US and has an operating budget and disaster relief fund used to reimburse states and local governments in emergencies.
Moreover, it has 10 regional offices and the capacity to coordinate resources from across the federal government.&nbsp;
It further includes money for residents, which can be used during the time of emergency or for helping uninsured homeowners rebuild.

He added that the "aid will go through us", rather than going through FEMA.&nbsp;

US President Donald Trump on Friday said that he stands by his decision to terminate the government-provided security detail for Dr Anthony Fauci. The decision follows former president Joe Biden&rsquo;s last-minute pardon of Fauci on his final day in office, aimed at shielding the former disease expert from potential investigation by the Trump administration. Trump addressed the issue during remarks in North Carolina, saying, &ldquo;When you work for government, at some point your security detail comes off. You can&rsquo;t have them forever. So, I think it&rsquo;s very standard.&rdquo; Trump further added that he would not take responsibility if threats were made against Fauci, suggesting the former official could fund his own private security. &ldquo;They all made a lot of money. They can hire their own security, too,&rdquo; Trump added. The New York Times initially reported the termination of Fauci&rsquo;s security detail, which had been provided by the National Institutes of Health in response to threats. Fauci had faced criticism and scrutiny from Republican lawmakers during Trump&rsquo;s presidency, particularly over disagreements regarding the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Senator Rand Paul voiced his support for ending the security detail. He announced on social media that he had submitted information backing the decision. &ldquo;I wish him nothing but peace, but he needs to pay for his own limos,&rdquo; Paul posted on X (formerly Twitter). Trump has also previously removed government security for other former officials, including John Bolton, Mike Pompeo, and Brian Hook, who had been provided additional protection due to threats from Iran. Bolton has been a vocal critic of Trump, while Pompeo, who briefly considered a 2024 presidential run, has largely endorsed Trump&rsquo;s campaign. Fauci, a longtime government infectious diseases expert, was at odds with Trump on several occasions during the COVID-19 pandemic and has been the subject of threats and scrutiny since his tenure.

US President Donald Trump on Friday (Jan 24) arrived in North Carolina to assess the extent of the damage caused by the recent hurricane.&nbsp;
This marks his first visit outside Washington after taking office as US President. Trump is accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump.&nbsp;
Trump, during his visit, suggested that he would sign an "executive order" to begin the process of fundamentally reforming and overhauling the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), "or maybe getting rid of them".&nbsp;

'Message to world': White House shares pictures of deportation flights after Trump administration arrests 500 illegal immigrants

The US got its new president earlier this week in the form of Donald J Trump but seems like Meta&rsquo;s AI chatbot is still stuck in time. On Thursday (Jan 23), the chatbot was still referring to Trump&rsquo;s predecessor Joe Biden as the US president, reported news agency Reuters.
"The current president of the United States is Joe Biden. However, according to the most recent information available, Donald Trump was sworn in as the president on January 20, 2025," replied Meta&rsquo;s AI chatbot upon requesting to name the president.
According to sources cited by Reuters, Meta has now initiated an emergency procedure to troubleshoot the urgent problem.
Responding to the error, Daniel Roberts, a spokesperson for Meta, said: "Everyone knows the President of the United States is Donald Trump. All generative AI systems sometimes return outdated results, and we will continue to improve our features.&rdquo;
It was not clear what kind of emergency measures was Meta taking in order to fix this problem.
<h2>Error fixed now</h2>
However, by Friday, the error had apparently been fixed. When asked to name the US president, Meta&rsquo;s chatbot responded without any error.

<h2>Recent Meta controversies</h2>
Meta has sparked couple of controversies during this week related to US presidential transition. First, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg faced criticism for steering the company to the right and was accused of implementing policy changes to please the new president. Decisions like scrapping its fact-checking program and doing away with DEI policies didn&rsquo;t go down well with the platform&rsquo;s traditional supporters.

It was also reported earlier this week that Meta might be forcing some of its users to re-follow the profiles of Trump, Vice President JD Vance and first lady Melania Trump on Facebook and Instagram.
Another controversy included allegations that Meta was blocking searches for the hashtags #Democrat and #Democrats for some users. Later, Meta also acknowledged the problem and blamed it on a technical glitch.

‘Biden was sworn in as president,’ Meta’s AI bewildered following Trump inauguration

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday he wanted to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin as soon as possible to secure an end to the war with Ukraine and expressed a desire to work towards cutting nuclear arms.
In the run-up to his Nov. 5 election victory, Trump declared many times that he would have a deal in place between Ukraine and Russia on his first day in office, if not before. His advisers now concede the war will take months to resolve.
"I really would like to be able to meet with President Putin soon to get that war ended," Trump, who returned to the White House on Monday, told the World Economic Forum in Davos via video link.
"And that's not from the standpoint of economy or anything else. It's from the standpoint of millions of lives are being wasted ... It's a carnage. And we really have to stop that war."
Speaking at the White House later in the day, Trump told reporters he was ready to meet with Putin as soon as possible to end what he called a ridiculous war.
"From what I hear, Putin would like to see me, and we'll leave as soon as we can. I'd meet immediately," Trump said. "Everyday we don't meet, soldiers are being killed in the battlefield."
Trump added that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had told him he was ready to make a deal to end the war.
Trump told participants in Davos that U.S. efforts to secure a peace settlement were now hopefully under way, but gave no details. Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

Earlier this week, Trump threatened to impose "high levels" of sanctions on Russia and tariffs on imports from there if Moscow did not reach a settlement.
Trump also told the crowd on Thursday he wants to work towards cutting nuclear arms, adding that he thought Russia and China might support reducing their own weapons capabilities.
"We'd like to see denuclearization ... and I will tell you President Putin really liked the idea of cutting way back on nuclear. And I think the rest of the world, we would have gotten them to follow, and China would have come along too," Trump said.

Putin has threatened to use nuclear weapons in his war against Ukraine. Putin has been modernising his nuclear forces and rejected talks with Washington on replacing New START, the last U.S.-Russia arms limitation pact, when it expires on Feb. 5, 2026.
In November, U.S. officials said Putin remains within the limits set by the treaty despite his 2023 suspension of the pact that holds Russia and the United States to deploying 1,550 strategic nuclear warheads on 700 intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), submarines and bombers.

And we really have to stop that war." Speaking at the White House later in the day, Trump told reporters he was ready to meet with Putin as soon as possible to end what he called a ridiculous war. "From what I hear, Putin would like to see me, and we'll leave as soon as we can. I'd meet immediately," Trump said. "Everyday we don't meet, soldiers are being killed in the battlefield." Trump added that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had told him he was ready to make a deal to end the war. Trump told participants in Davos that U.S. efforts to secure a peace settlement were now hopefully under way, but gave no details. Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Trump ready to meet Russia's Putin 'immediately' to help end Russia-Ukraine war

US President Donald Trump Thursday (Jan 23) issued an executive order banning establishment of a &lsquo;digital dollar&rsquo;. Trump argued his move would protect the Americans from the risks associated with the central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) that &ldquo;threaten the stability of the financial system, individual privacy, and the sovereignty of the United States.&rdquo;
The CBDCs could be used by America&rsquo;s central bank interchangeably with physical currency, giving the bank full authority over the supply of the virtual currency. The idea to ban the digital dollar has long been supported by Congressional Republicans.
<h2>Joe Biden had approved CBDCs</h2>
The previous administration of Joe Biden had green-lighted the creation of CBDCs with aim to bring people without bank accounts into the US financial system. But Republicans vehemently oppose the idea.

Trump signs executive orders to promote cryptocurrencies, ban creation of ‘digital dollar’

A federal judge in Seattle on Thursday (Jan 23) has temporarily blocked the enforcement of an executive order signed by President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> on Monday (Jan 20), which aimed to restrict automatic birthright citizenship in the United States. The judge described the order as "blatantly unconstitutional."
US District Judge John Coughenour issued the temporary restraining order after a request from four Democratic-led states&mdash;Washington, Arizona, Illinois, and Oregon. The order prevents the Trump administration from implementing the policy, which was part of the president's broader efforts to address immigration.

Civil rights organisations and attorneys general from 22 states have filed five lawsuits against the policy, alleging it violates the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. The policy directs US agencies to deny citizenship to children born in the United States if neither parent is a US citizen or legal permanent resident. They would also face deportation and be ineligible for Social Security numbers, government benefits, or lawful employment in the future. If implemented, more than 150,000 newborns each year would be denied US citizenship.

'Nothing less than revolution,' US President Donald Trump addresses Davos summit, promises massive tax cuts

With the looming deadline set by President Donald Trump's executive order to end birthright citizenship, Indian couples in the United States are urgently scheduling C-sections to ensure their children gain citizenship before February 20, 2025, Indian media reports claimed. Trump's order was issued shortly after his inauguration. The order will end the practice of granting US citizenship to children born in the country to non-citizen parents after February 19. Children born in the US before February 19 will still receive citizenship by birth, prompting a rush among Indian couples, many of whom are on temporary work visas like H-1B and L1, or are awaiting Green Cards. According to a Times of India (TOI) report, Indian couples are contacting doctors in large numbers to schedule preterm C-sections, even if their due dates are still weeks away. Dr. S.D. Rama, a gynaecologist based in New Jersey, mentioned that his clinic had received numerous requests for C-sections, some from women who were only seven months pregnant. One patient, who wasn&rsquo;t due until March, came in with her husband to sign up for a preterm delivery. This surge is partly driven by the hope that a child born in the US will eventually provide a path to residency for the parents. Till now, children born in the US could apply for Green Cards for their parents once they turn 21. This prospect was highly valued by Indian nationals who have been waiting years for Green Card approval, with some facing a decades-long wait due to the backlog in visa processing. While talking to TOI, Dr. S.G. Mukkala, a Texas-based obstetrician, expressed concern about the risks associated with preterm deliveries. It includes problems such as underdeveloped lungs and neurological complications. He added that in the past few days, he has received inquiries from about 20 couples seeking early deliveries. For illegal immigrants, the implications are even more severe, as the policy shift effectively blocks any future claims to citizenship based on birthright. One couple, illegally living in the US and expecting a child, also expressed disappointment over the new deadline, which has left them uncertain about their future options. As the February 20 deadline approaches, Indian couples across the US are scrambling to ensure their children are born before the cutoff, fearing the potential consequences of the policy change.

A report by the news agency Associated Press early Thursday (Jan 23) said that several schools were receiving calls from worried parents about rumours that immigration agents would try to enter schools.&nbsp;
Educators have sought to reassure immigrant parents that schools are safe places for their kids. However, fears have intensified for some parents due to the Trump administration allowing federal immigration agencies to make arrests at schools, churches, and hospitals.&nbsp;
<h2>How does the new policy reverse old rules?</h2>
Tuesday's announcement cleared the way for arrests at schools by reversing guidance that restricted two federal agencies, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, from carrying out enforcement in sensitive locations.

World: As the new US government's crackdown on illegal immigration intensifies, some families have been wondering whether it is safe to send their kids to school.

The Donald Trump administration in the United States (US) has started cracking down on immigrants who have entered the country illegally. American media reported on Tuesday (January 21) that the Trump administration rescinded a ban issued under the previous Joe Biden administration that stopped immigration raids in and around schools, healthcare facilities, churches and facilities providing disaster relief among other locations. These infrastructures are considered sensitive locations. India may seek to impose additional duties on American imports in response to US tariff hikes, Financial Express has reported, citing a document prepared by the government of PM Narendra Modi. The potential retaliatory steps would be in line with India&rsquo;s standard response to such external threats.
For instance, in 2019, New Delhi had slapped tariffs on apples, almonds and motorcycles from the US after the previous administration of US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Indian steel and aluminium. A total of 28 US products were targeted. India might take a similar approach this time around as well.
<h2>India also exploring lowering tariffs on US products</h2>
Earlier, Bloomberg reported that New Delhi was seeking to lower tariffs on American products. India is willing to narrow the $35.3 billion trade surplus with the US, its largest trading partner. The Bloomberg report said India was looking to boost imports of whiskey, steel and oil.

As US President Donald Trump rushes to tighten his grip on the federal government, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has ordered its civil rights division to halt ongoing litigations initiated during the previous Joe Biden administration. News agency Reuters reported Wednesday (Jan 22), citing an internal memo, that the DOJ has directed the division to stop pursuing new cases and avoid forging agreements.
Notably, the division is tasked with enforcing anti-discrimination laws in the country.
The memo indicates that the Trump administration may revisit some settlements and agreements reached under the Biden administration, especially over the last 90 days.
&ldquo;The new administration may wish to reconsider settlements and consent decrees negotiated and approved by the prior administration,&rdquo; the memo said, reported CNN.
<h2>Impact of the move</h2>
The move could affect the civil rights division&rsquo;s settlement reached with Minneapolis regarding reforms in the city&rsquo;s police department. The agreement, reached earlier this month, was forged after federal investigators found a pattern of discrimination and civil rights abuses following the killing of George Floyd by cops.
The freezing could also affect police reforms in Louisville. Investigators reportedly found evidence of targeted discrimination against the Black population in the region following the death of Breonna Taylor in 2020.
The settlement was reached in December.

The Biden administration in its final days rushed to forge these settlements and implement police reforms.
The move by the DOJ comes as Trump&rsquo;s pick for leading the department, Pam Bondi, has not yet been confirmed by the Senate. For now, the department is being led by its interim chief James McHenry, a longtime DOJ immigration attorney.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (Jan 22) scored a significant win for his hardline immigration agenda, as the Republican-led US Congress approved the Laken Riley Act. This marks the Trump administration's first major legislative success. The bill, which mandates the detention of undocumented immigrants charged with theft-related crimes, also expands mandatory detention to include offences causing death or serious bodily injury. &nbsp;
The legislation is named after 22-year-old student Laken Riley murdered by a Venezuelan undocumented immigrant wanted for shoplifting.

<h2>'NEVER' allowed back into US</h2>
The Laken Riley Act sailed through the upper chamber and the House of Representatives and is now due for Trump's signature. Interestingly, it will be the first piece of legislation Trump signs into law.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, celebrating the bill's passage on X, said: "Criminal illegal aliens must be detained, deported, and NEVER allowed back into our country."
"The American people demand and deserve safety and security," he added.

The Senate passed the bill earlier this week with a 64-35 vote, following its approval in the House of Representatives. However, a slight amendment in the Senate &mdash; expansion of mandatory detention to add "crimes resulting in death or serious bodily injury" &mdash; required the bill to return to the House for final approval. There, it garnered bipartisan support, with 46 Democrats joining Republicans in backing it. &nbsp;
The president has also appointed Tom Homan, a staunch immigration hardliner, as his border chief to enforce these measures. &nbsp;
During his campaign, Trump frequently referenced Riley's case, using it to spotlight his concerns over undocumented immigrants who he blamed for "poisoning the blood" of the country. In 2021, 26-year-old Jose Antonio Ibarra was convicted for Riley's murder. &nbsp;

Senator Joni Ernst, a Republican from Iowa, said: "We will no longer prioritise dangerous criminal illegal aliens over the lives of Americans."&nbsp;
"The era of open borders and lawless chaos is over. Republicans are securing the border and putting the safety and well-being of US citizens first."
<h2>Criticism of the law</h2>
Critics, however, have raised significant concerns. Democrats have highlighted that the law would cost around $83 billion for implementation over three years, which exceeds the Homeland Security Department's annual budget.&nbsp;

Trump administration working on second phase of Gaza hostage-ceasefire deal: Report

United States President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (Jan 21) that he was discussing with his team imposing a 10 per cent tariff on imports from China, citing that Beijing was sending fentanyl to Mexico and Canada.
He said that the duty could take effect as early as February 1.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re talking about a tariff of 10% on China based on the fact that they&rsquo;re sending fentanyl to Mexico and Canada,&rdquo; the president said, speaking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday evening.
"Probably February 1st is the date we're looking at," he said on being asked about the date the tariffs will be put in place.

<h2>China says will 'defend national interest'</h2>
Responding to the tariff threats, China said that it will defend its "national interests".
"We have always believed that there are no winners in a trade war or a tariff war," foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said.
She added that Beijing was "willing to maintain communication with the US, properly handle differences, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and promote the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-US relations".
Trump spoke to his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping days before his swearing-in ceremony. During the telephonic conversation, they discussed trade, fentanyl, and ByteDance Ltd.&rsquo;s social media app, TikTok.
&ldquo;We didn&rsquo;t talk too much about tariffs, other than he knows where I stand,&rdquo; Trump said Tuesday.
&ldquo;Look, I put large tariffs on China. I&rsquo;ve taken in hundreds of billions of dollars. Until I was president, China never paid not 10 cents to the United States,&rdquo; he said.
<h2>Trump could impose sweeping tariffs on Canada and Mexico on Feb 1</h2>
Similar tariff threats were issued by Trump for Canada and Mexico on Monday (Jan 20)
The US president said that he was considering imposing 25 per cent tariffs on Canada as well as Mexico with the possibility of implementation as early as February 1.
"We're thinking in terms of 25 per cent on Mexico and Canada because they're allowing vast numbers of people&mdash;Canada's a very bad abuser also&mdash;vast numbers of people to come in, and fentanyl to come in," he said in the Oval Office as he signed an array of executive orders.
Trump reignited his tariff threats against Canada and Mexico, two major US trading partners, just hours after taking office. He accused them of failing to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking into the US.
Earlier on Monday, he pledged to "immediately begin the overhaul" of the US trade system "to protect American workers and families."
"Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens," Trump said in his inaugural address.
<h2>Canada says 'ready to respond'</h2>
Top Canadian ministers on Monday said their country is ready to respond if Trump goes ahead with his plan to impose a 25 per cent tariff on Canada and Mexico on Feb 1.
Canadian Foreign Minister M&eacute;lanie Joly said they &ldquo;will continue to work on preventing tariffs&rdquo; but said they are also &ldquo;working on retaliation.&rdquo;
Canadian Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc said that the US president can be unpredictable.
&ldquo;None of this should be surprising,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Our country is absolutely ready to respond to any one of these scenarios.&rdquo;

Immigration agents are set to begin nationwide operations on Tuesday (Jan 21), aimed at detaining and deporting undocumented migrants, according to Tom Homan, the border policy chief under Donald Trump.
In an interview with Fox Business Network, Homan said that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-to-sign-over-200-executive-orders-on-border-security-energy-and-living-costs-on-first-day-8636415" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Immigration and Customs Enforcement</a> (ICE) officers would be stepping up enforcement efforts after what he described as a period of limited action in recent years.
Meanwhile, as per a report by Fox News, Donald Trump&rsquo;s administration has rescinded ban issued under Joe Biden that stopped immigration raids in and around schools, healthcare facilities, churches and facilities providing disaster relief, among other locations.
<h2>'ICE is going to start doing their job and more'</h2>
&ldquo;ICE is going to start doing their job and more. They haven&rsquo;t been able to do the job for the last four years, and now they&rsquo;re going to start enforcing the law like there should be,&rdquo; Homan said.
While Homan did not disclose specific locations for the raids, he confirmed that the operations would take place across the United States. He avoided mentioning whether &ldquo;sanctuary cities&rdquo; that don't cooperate with federal immigration authorities, would be a particular focus.

These raids are part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to implement strict immigration policies. On Monday, President Trump signed several executive orders targeting undocumented migrants and aiming to boost security at the US-Mexico border.
In his first address from the Oval Office as the 47th president, Trump declared a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/donald-trump-reinstates-winston-churchill-bust-gives-oval-office-a-makeover-8639820">national emergency</a>, which he said justified deploying US troops to the southern border.

The executive order read, &ldquo;Because of the gravity and emergency of this present danger and imminent threat, it is necessary for the Armed Forces to take all appropriate action to assist the Department of Homeland Security in obtaining full operational control of the southern border.&rdquo;
<h2>Trump to end birthright citizenship </h2>
Additionally, Trump introduced an order seeking to redefine eligibility for American citizenship under the US Constitution, targeting the principle of birthright citizenship guaranteed by the 14th Amendment. Speaking to reporters, Trump described this as a significant step: &ldquo;Birthright &ndash; that&rsquo;s a big one.&rdquo;
The executive order, which aims to deny automatic citizenship to US-born children of undocumented immigrants, is set to take effect in 30 days.

However, the president's ability to unilaterally alter the Constitution has already been challenged in court. Civil rights groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, have filed lawsuits on behalf of immigrant advocacy organisations. These groups argue that the executive order would harm their members, leaving their children ineligible for citizenship.

Will US President Trump's birthright citizenship order impact Indians on Green Card wait list?

US President Donald Trump once again showed his determination to take control of the Panama Canal in his presidency and vowed the same in his inaugural speech on Monday (Jan 20). Despite the constant clarification by the Panama government that there is no Chinese interference in its operation, Trump claimed that "China is operating the Panama Canal".&nbsp;
He added that the US did not give the canal to China but to Panama, and now Trump is "taking it back." The newly elected president said the US has been &ldquo;treated very badly by this foolish gift that should have never been made."&nbsp;

<h3>The History of the Panama Canal</h3>
It all started in 1880, a French company that was owned by one of the builders of the Suezaa Canal started constructing across the Isthmus of Panama (Which was a part of Columbia at that time). But after the death of around 22,000 workers due to various tropical diseases like yellow fever and the company going bankrupt, the project was sold to the US in 1902 for $40 million.&nbsp;

In 1903, Panama declared independence from Colombia. It was a result of a US-backed revolution. After the independence, Panama signed a treaty with the US, &nbsp;the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty. As per the agreement, the US had to pay &nbsp;$10 million to Panama for a perpetual lease on land for the Panama Canal. The US also had to pay $250,000 to the other country in annual rent. In 1913, the canal was ready with a cost of $375 million.&nbsp;
In 1977, then-US President Jimmy Carter and Panama&rsquo;s General Omar Torrijos signed two new treaties, which replaced the 1903 treaty. The newly signed agreements gave America the right to defend the Panama Canal against any threat.&nbsp;
